Mullaghmeen forest

Rising above the farmland of north Westmeath, Mullaghmeen Forest is the largest planted beech forest in Ireland. Its 400 hectares also has Sitka spruce, Scots pine and Noble fir, and interesting native trees, including whitebeam, hornbeam, spindle, alder and elder, wild cherry and bird cherry, crab apple, blackthorn and whitethorn. There are three looped walks in the forest, and off the Red Trail, you can reach the summit, and enjoy magnificent views, including Lough Sheelin and Cavan northwards, and the Wicklow Mountains to the south east. There are several unexpected attractions, including the Booley Hut and Flax Pits.

While the picturesque Multyfarnham area of north Westmeath has many attractions, its Franciscan Friary, beside the Gaine River, still a place of worship after 800 years, is special.

Tradition tells us that despite official dissolution, being twice burned and twice plundered, and friars imprisoned in just three decades, the harassed Franciscans still remained on in the area and continued to provide spiritual solace, in those ‘dark and evil days,’ so that the later martyred archbishop St. Oliver Plunkett reported in 1671, that there were ten friars in Multyfarnham, and the friary had a novitiate.

Scragh Bog, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is strictly protected, as it is one of the few remaining European examples of a wet, actively growing transition fen to acidic raised bog, with minimal disturbance, with a characteristic flora and fauna. Less than 6kms north west of Mullingar, it occupies 22.8 ha in a narrow valley off the N4 road, running parallel to the shore of nearby Lough Owel. Rare plants include insect-eating undew and Roundleaved Wintergreen and there are hundreds of uncommon insects, rare in Europe. A wooden boardwalk in the wooded area for visitors, and a view of the entire bog from a raised viewing platform on its southern side.

Fore Abbey & 7 wonders

Enchanting Fore, in a beautiful valley in north Westmeath, is a ‘must’ for any visitor to the midlands. In addition to its famous Seven Wonders, going back to Early Christian times and to St. Feichin, it has the best preserved historic monuments in north Westmeath, and many natural attractions. You can see the Ben of Fore, the ancient Town Gates, the huge lintel stone lifted by St. Feichin in his church, the Benedictine Abbey, the water that flows uphill and the medieval Anchorite’s cell. The picturesque village caters well for visitors, with its coffee shop and visitor centre, and its hostelries.

Pewter making was revived in Ireland by Mullingar Pewter in 1974. A visit to the workshop will allow you see the skill of casting, turning, meticulous assembly and delicate hand finishing of pewter pieces by skilled artisans.

The Gift Shop has a visitor information centre and carries an extensive range of Mullingar Pewter products and gifts for all occasions to suit all tastes. Admission is free. There is a coffee shop serving tea, coffee, lunches, etc.

With more than 1 million members worldwide, the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) is an Irish and international amateur sporting and cultural organisation. Cusack Park, the headquarters of the Westmeath branch of the GAA, is located on Friars Mill Road, Mullingar.

It has been at its present location for more that three quarters of a century. Westmeath GAA is responsible for the promotion of Gaelic games in the county and there are 47 clubs, 32 football and 15 hurling as well as ladies football and camogie. Matches take place most weekends at Cusack Park and no prebooking of tickets is required.

Cathedral of Christ the King Museum

Occupying an elevated site over Mullingar town, the famous Cathedral of Christ the King, Bishopsgate St., was opened in 1936.

A landmark in the area with its twin spires and dome, the Basilican-style Cathedral can seat 1,800 people. The museum, which is situated upstairs in the Cathedral building, contains many artifacts of historical interest and models of church buildings in the Mullingar area from the seventeenth century to the present.
