EVERYDAY

SPICES

THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR HEALTH

BY EVELYN FLAHARTY

W

hen it comes to staying healthy, we often think about eating more vegetables, drinking water, or taking supplements. But what if one of the most powerful health upgrades is already sitting in your kitchen cabinet? Spices don’t just make food taste better. They can also play a significant role in how your body feels, heals, and functions every day. Five standout spices that I include daily in my diet are cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, garlic, and oregano. Of course, many other spices offer health benefits, but these five are my daily, non-negotiable, goto spices. These common ingredients have been used for centuries in traditional cooking and natural medicine, and for good reason. They support immunity, reduce inflammation, aid digestion, and protect the body from damage caused by stress, pollution, and aging. The best part? They’re inexpensive, easy to use, and incredibly effective when used consistently. You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to take advantage of their benefits, which is a good thing for me. Whether your goal is muscle growth, faster recovery, or general wellness, incorporating these spices into your daily meals can give you a natural edge. Let’s take a closer look at what makes each of these spices so powerful.

Top Doctor Magazine / Special Issue - Luigi Novembre / 13

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a familiar favorite for many people. Whether it’s added to baked goods or stirred into coffee, cinnamon adds a cozy flavor that feels like a warm hug. But beyond its taste, cinnamon also offers several important health benefits. One of the most notable is its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels. This is especially useful for people who experience energy crashes, sugar cravings, or mood swings throughout the day. Cinnamon contains natural compounds that help the body use insulin more effectively, which can lead to more balanced energy levels and less strain on the body over time. As a professional bodybuilder, blood sugar control is key when aiming to build lean muscle and reduce fat. Stable insulin levels can help limit fat storage and encourage better nutrient partitioning, meaning your body directs nutrients toward muscle growth rather than fat accumulation. This is why I add cinnamon to my oatmeal, yogurt, protein shakes, and sweet potatoes. Cinnamon is also rich in antioxidants, which help fight damage from free radicals—unstable molecules that contribute to aging and many chronic illnesses. Some research even suggests that cinnamon may support heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.

TURMERIC

If you’ve ever had curry or golden milk, you’ve tasted turmeric. It’s known for its bright golden yellow color and has long been used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. This spice is just as valuable in your wellness routine as it is in your spice blend. The secret behind turmeric’s health power is curcumin, a compound known for its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Inflammation is your body’s way of dealing with injury or stress. However, when it becomes chronic (meaning it sticks around too long), it can contribute to joint pain, fatigue, and chronic diseases like arthritis or heart issues.

Curcumin helps calm this inflammation and protect your cells from damage. Why does this matter to me as a bodybuilder? Intense workouts cause tiny tears in muscle fibers, leading to inflammation during the repair process. While this is a natural part of muscle growth, too much inflammation can slow down recovery and contribute to chronic joint pain or overtraining symptoms. Curcumin helps reduce excessive inflammation, allowing for faster recovery, less soreness, and improved joint function. One thing to know is that the body doesn’t easily absorb turmeric on its own. That’s why it’s often paired with black pepper. Not sure how to incorporate turmeric into your diet? I like to add turmeric to my eggs, rice, vegetables, and detox smoothies. You can also make golden milk with turmeric, milk (or a plant-based alternative), cinnamon, ginger, and honey.

14

GINGER

Ginger is one of the most versatile and widely used spices in the world. Its bold, slightly spicy flavor can brighten up both sweet and savory dishes. But its benefits go far beyond flavor. Ginger is best known for its ability to ease nausea and support digestion. Whether you’re dealing with motion sickness, morning sickness, or an upset stomach, ginger can help calm things down. It promotes the production of digestive enzymes and helps food move through the digestive tract more smoothly. Ginger also supports the digestive process, which is often overlooked in bodybuilding nutrition. Proper digestion is essential to absorbing the nutrients from high-protein and high-calorie meals. If your digestive system isn’t functioning optimally, you may not be getting the full benefit of your nutrition plan. Ginger stimulates digestive enzymes, reduces bloating, and helps your body better process large meals.

GARLIC: NATURE’S IMMUNE BOOSTER

But ginger’s value goes well beyond digestive aid. For athletes, it offers several key advantages: reduced inflammation, lower muscle pain, and enhanced digestion and nutrient absorption. Like turmeric, ginger contains bioactive compounds (such as gingerol) that reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. This makes it incredibly effective for reducing joint pain, easing postworkout soreness, and promoting faster muscle repair. All music to my ears, especially when training legs.

The key compound in garlic is allicin, which is released when garlic is chopped, crushed, or chewed. Allicin has strong antimicrobial properties, helping the body fight off bacteria, viruses, and even fungi. That’s why garlic is often recommended as a natural remedy for colds, coughs, and minor infections.

I use ginger the same way I use turmeric; both go into my detox smoothies. Looking for more ideas? Try adding fresh grated ginger to stir-fries and marinades. You can also make ginger tea by steeping fresh slices in hot water with lemon and honey, or sprinkle powdered ginger into oatmeal and baked goods.

Garlic is one of the oldest natural remedies on record, and it still holds up today. While it’s a flavor favorite in cuisines all over the world, garlic’s real strength lies in its powerful immune-boosting and heart-supporting properties.

From a cardiovascular perspective, garlic has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol profiles. For athletes and bodybuilders such as myself, healthy circulation means better oxygen delivery to muscles, improved endurance, and faster recovery. Some studies even suggest that garlic supplementation can increase peak exercise capacity and reduce fatigue. Garlic is also rich in antioxidants, protecting cells from damage and supporting the detoxification processes that help your body bounce back from intense training. It may even support detoxification by helping the liver process and eliminate toxins more effectively. My favorite way to enjoy my vegetables is to sauté them in garlic and olive oil. The aroma of the garlic roasting in the olive oil – delightful. For maximum benefit, let chopped garlic sit for 5–10 minutes before cooking—it allows the allicin to activate fully.

OREGANO

Oregano is more than just a topping for pizza or a garnish on pasta. It’s a potent antioxidant and antimicrobial herb that can help the body fight off infections, support gut health, and enhance recovery. It contains carvacrol and thymol, two natural substances with strong antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects. These compounds make oregano an excellent supporter of immune health. During cold and flu season, oregano can help your body defend itself naturally. It may also support gut health by fighting off harmful bacteria and promoting a healthy balance of microbes in your digestive system. Oregano is also high in antioxidants, which help protect your body from cell damage and inflammation. While fresh oregano is great, dried oregano is even more concentrated and easier to keep on hand. For athletes, especially those in heavy training phases or during travel and competition seasons, oregano can act as a natural defense system. It may also help balance the gut microbiome—a critical factor in overall health, nutrient absorption, and even mood regulation. A healthy gut means better digestion, less inflammation, and a stronger immune response. Considering the physical demands placed on the body by intense training, maintaining immune health is non-negotiable. The less time you spend sick or rundown, the more consistent and productive your training will be. Oregano also acts as a natural preservative in foods, which is why it’s often used in meal prep and storage-friendly recipes. Sprinkle dried oregano on roasted vegetables, pasta, chicken, or soups. Fresh oregano can be chopped and added to salads or infused into oils for dressings.

HOW THESE SPICES SUPPORT WHOLE-BODY WELLNESS

One of the best things about these spices is how they complement one another—both in flavor and function. They each support different parts of the body, but many of their benefits overlap, creating a stronger effect when used together. For example: • Cinnamon and ginger can balance blood sugar and improve digestion, making them perfect for stabilizing energy throughout the day. • Turmeric and black pepper reduce inflammation and support joint health. • Garlic and oregano provide a powerful immune-boosting combo. • Ginger and turmeric soothe the stomach and help ease aches and pains. Now you understand why, as an athlete, these are my favorite spices. And you don’t need to use large amounts. Plus, they are perfect to mix together. Even small, consistent doses added to daily meals can gradually support your health and help prevent many common ailments.

SIMPLE WAYS TO USE THESE SPICES EVERY DAY Incorporating these spices into your routine doesn’t require a complete kitchen makeover. It’s easy to start with what you’re already eating and find creative ways to add extra flavor and nutrition. I’ve shared with you some of the ways I incorporate these spices into my daily diet. Here are a few more ideas: • Breakfast: Add cinnamon and/or ginger to oatmeal, pancakes, smoothies, or tea. • Lunch: Use turmeric and black pepper in soups, rice bowls, or roasted vegetables. • Dinner: Cook with garlic and oregano in pasta dishes, grilled chicken, or stir-fries. • Snacks: Sip ginger tea or turmeric golden milk in the afternoon or evening. • Meal Prep: Season large batches of food with these spices to add flavor and long-lasting health benefits.

You don’t need to change your whole menu—just enhance what you’re already making with smart, flavorful additions.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR EVERYONE

In today’s world, we’re all juggling busy lives, trying to stay healthy, and often feeling like we don’t have time to think about nutrition in detail. That’s what makes these five spices so helpful—they’re a simple, natural, and affordable way to support your health, no matter your age or lifestyle. They don’t require a prescription. They don’t come with a long list of side effects. They don’t even cost much. Yet they offer real, research-backed benefits for your immune system, your digestion, your heart, your joints, and your energy. And perhaps just as important, they make your meals more delicious, which makes eating healthy feel less like a chore and more like a joy.

FINAL THOUGHTS: SMALL ADDITIONS, BIG IMPACT

Cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, garlic, and oregano may seem like small additions to your meals, but their impact on your health can be surprisingly significant. These spices have stood the test of time in kitchens around the world, and for good reason. They help your body fight inflammation, stay energized, digest food more easily, and defend against illness. Best of all, they’re easy to use and enjoy. So, the next time you’re reaching for seasonings, remember: you’re not just adding flavor—you’re adding powerful support for your well-being. HARNESSING THE

POWER OF C60

AN INTERVIEW WITH JESS MACNAUGHTON CEO OF C60 POWER WRITTEN BY: JILLIAN FAST When Jess MacNaughton walked away from a successful two-decade career in commercial real estate, she didn’t expect her next path to lead into science-driven wellness. Yet today, as CEO and co-founder of C60 Power, she’s at the forefront of introducing a revolutionary antioxidant to the healthcare and wellness community.

A SERENDIPITOUS START

When Jess MacNaughton looks back at her 20 years in commercial real estate, she remembers the long hours, constant demands, and “work hard, play hard” lifestyle. On the outside, it appeared successful, but on the inside, she was burned out. “I thought I was doing all the right things,” she recalled. “I ate organic, I worked out, but I still didn’t feel good.” Her opportunity for change came in 2016, when a mutual friend introduced her to biogeochemist Ken Swartz. At the time, Swartz was studying a unique molecule called Carbon 60 (C60), originally discovered in 1985. The scientists who discovered C60 were awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996. Initially searching for a way to protect himself from radiation exposure in a laboratory environment, he and his colleagues discovered something even more surprising: it seemed to improve overall health dramatically. After about a year or less of consistent implementation of C60 throughout the course of his

22

research and experimentation, Swartz and his colleagues discovered just how powerful this molecule was. He and another gentleman on his team, previously suffering from macular degeneration and other vision concerns, revealed that it was no longer noticeable at his subsequent doctor appointments. Swartz, hearing Jess’s health concerns, encouraged her to try incorporating C60 into her lifestyle. Skeptical, Jess didn’t jump in right away. “Honestly, it was a concept, an idea I didn’t really understand. Quite frankly, the science went straight over my head,” she admitted with a laugh. “He kept pestering me, and after about six months, I told him I’d try it.” Within weeks, she noticed sharper focus and increased energy, and six months later, lifelong allergy symptoms and the debilitating cramps she experienced every month were gone. Even her hair, which had never grown past a short bob, began growing faster than ever, her nails too. “It felt like my brain finally had room to breathe,” she said. “I would describe it as having expanded bandwidth, like when you’re in the flow on the days where you can handle a lot of stress and you’re highly productive, no matter what’s thrown at you.”

THE SCIENCE BEHIND C60

At its core, C60 works at the cellular level to lift the oxidative burden. Shaped like a hollow soccer ball, its unique “buckyball” structure allows it to interact with free radicals in a way no other antioxidant can. Oxidative stress occurs when unstable molecules, known as free radicals, damage cells by attacking DNA, proteins, and cellular membranes. Over time, this process accelerates aging, fuels inflammation, and may even contribute to the development of chronic diseases. Most antioxidants only neutralize a single free radical and then become inactive. However, thanks to its unique structure, C60 turns the cellular waste back into water. It can continuously reset itself, neutralizing free radicals over and over again without being depleted or interfering with other nutrients, medications, or supplements. It also supports hormone health by activating pregnenolone, a precursor molecule, and mimics critical enzymes tied to longevity like Catalase and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). “C60 helps people with their unique inflammatory issues,” she said, “Inflammation can uniquely manifest in you, and is likely where you’re going to notice relief over time and long-term use. It’s a very powerful punch that helps to promote a healthy inflammatory and immune response.”

A MISSION WITH PURPOSE

After her personal experience, MacNaughton knew she had stumbled onto something too important to keep quiet. In 2018, she teamed up with Swartz to co-found C60 Power. From day one, the company has focused on purity, transparency, and trust. Their products are made with 99.99% pure, sublimated C60, blended into organic oils such as MCT coconut oil, avocado oil, and Extra-Virgin olive oil. Each batch is third-party tested, with QR codes on every package, allowing customers to view the results for themselves.

Top Doctor Magazine / Special Issue - Luigi Novembre / 25

“There’s no toxic solvents involved in our manufacturing process,” she assured, highlighting a key differentiating factor between C60 Power and its competitors, “other companies sometimes outright pretend like it’s something other than what it is.” That philosophy has made C60 Power the leading brand of choice among doctors, athletes, and wellness advocates. Beyond the science, Jess said, it’s the customer stories that drive her. “Every day we hear from people who feel like they’ve gotten their life back. That’s why we do this.” “I personally believe each and every one of us has a unique mission here.” MacNaughton stated, “We stand behind what we do and what we’re going after: helping support people and their energy so they can accomplish whatever they’ve been called to do.”

EXPANDING HORIZONS: FROM ENERGY TO ANTI-AGING

When Jess MacNaughton talked about the future of C60 Power, her excitement was contagious. “It started with oils, but oils are just the beginning,” she said with a smile. “Our customers kept telling us how much better they felt, and naturally, the next question was: what else can C60 do?” That question has taken the company far beyond its original products.

SKINCARE THAT WORKS FROM THE INSIDE OUT

For Jess, skincare was a natural next step. About a year ago, they released their skincare line. Backed by human studies from Japan, C60 applied topically has been proven to lessen the appearance of wrinkles, protect against oxidative damage caused by UV stress, and maintain skin suppleness. “Once they have their energy issues resolved, my goal for our community is for them to be able to look as young as they feel,” she said. All products, intended for both men and women, feature natural, no-tox ingredients to help improve the skin, and the results speak for themselves. Customers describe firmer skin, brighter eyes, and less irritation. The Youth Renewal Eye Cream, formulated with copper peptides, has also become a favorite among both men and women who want to soften fine lines or tackle under-eye puffiness. Even the C60 Skin roll-on, designed for bug bites or eczema flare-ups, has gained a loyal following.

GUMMIES FOR THOSE ON THE GO

Not everyone wants to measure out a spoonful of oil every morning, which is why C60 Power’s gummies have been a game-changer. The gummies, available in regular and sugar-free varieties, quickly became a customer favorite for those on the go, including doctors, athletes, executives, parents juggling long days, and frequent travelers. They aim to support energy levels, as well as promote brain health and performance.

26

WELLNESS FOR PETS

Their newest, and perhaps most personal, evolution of C60 Power has been the pet line. “For so many of us, pets are family,” Jess said. These safe, tailored formulas for pets, and the stories that have come back, are nothing short of moving. These formulas are helping pets regain energy, mobility, and playfulness, particularly older animals facing joint discomfort or age-related decline. Even horses are seeing improvements in stamina, recovery, and energy levels. Animal studies indicate that C60 may even support lifespan.

LOOKING AHEAD

For Jess MacNaughton, the mission behind C60 Power has always been about more than products. It is about supporting people so they can live with purpose. With products ranging from oils to skincare to pet support, she’s determined to make wellness something that feels practical and personal. That promise reflects the company’s commitment to both quality and community. “We are 100 percent committed to our customers’ satisfaction. Our desire is that they enjoy life as it was intended; filled with energy, vitality, and purpose,” Jess explained. She believes that energy is the foundation for everything else in life. “We operate to support people’s energy so they can pursue their purpose. That’s really our goal and our mission,” she said. Looking ahead, Jess sees C60 Power as part of a broader shift in wellness, one that emphasizes healthspan as much as lifespan. She remains hopeful, despite obstacles such as shifting technologies and unpredictable economic circumstances. “There’s a wellness revolution happening,” she concluded. “There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to health, and people are becoming more aware of their bodies and their choices than ever before. That gives me hope.” For MacNaughton, that purpose is clear: to help people, and even their pets, live with more vitality, joy, and resilience. And if the stories pouring in from C60 Power’s community are any indication, the future she imagines is already unfolding. REDEFINING LUXURY AND INVESTMENT

Luigi Novembre’s Vision for Tampa’s Real Estate Landscape BY RILEY GEORGE Developer Luigi Novembre is changing the game in the luxury condo hotel sector with his ambitious new project, Hotel ORA, set to redefine investment opportunities in Tampa, Florida. Novembre, whose career trajectory spans continents and industries, brings a distinctive blend of financial acumen and real estate development experience to the Sunshine State. Having started as a realtor and developer in the highly competitive Canadian market, and previously navigating the complexities of the financial industry on Bay Street, Novembre is not just building a hotel; he is architecting a new business model. This model, which leverages his background in manufacturing and selling complex financial instruments, is specifically designed to maximize real estate buyer incomes by drastically cutting ownership expenses. ORA, therefore, emerges as more than just a premier property in a booming market; it represents Novembre’s fully realized vision for an owner-centric investment product that’s built to deliver superior income and longterm financial advantages.

32

A Career Pivot: From Bay Street to Real Estate Development Before his foray into development, Novembre worked on Bay Street, Canada’s financial heart, a likeness to Wall Street. “I worked at one of the largest banks, manufacturing and selling complex financial instruments to financial advisors,” Novembre recalled. However, he recognized a greater opportunity in tangible assets, stating, “I saw a tremendous amount of value in putting together these incomeoriented products. There was more value because of the higher income potential.” This perspective drove him to change his career entirely, shifting his focus to building and, eventually, introducing his unique condo-hotel model to the U.S. market.

The ORA Advantage: A Model Built for the Owner Novembre’s innovative approach to the condohotel concept fundamentally differs from the industry standard, focusing on a dramatic reduction in owner expenses. Novembre pinpoints

two key areas where ORA stands apart: the management fee and the Homeowners Association (HOA) fee. Traditional full-service condo hotels typically charge owners a management fee ranging from 50% to 55% of the gross adjusted revenue. ORA offers a drastically lower rate. Novembre outlined their powerful pre-construction incentive for the ORA project: “Our management fee is only 15% for the first two years and then 20% thereafter.” He underscored the competitive nature of this offer, drawing a direct comparison: “15% to 20% versus 50% to 55% of gross adjusted revenue. That’s a significant difference.” Equally innovative is Novembre’s approach to the HOA. He completely carved out the property’s services and amenities—assets often co-mingled with hotel operating expenses—from the association’s financial structure. This revolutionary separation means that the HOA fee, “in perpetuity of ownership of your condo hotel suite, will be typically a half to a third of what other condo hotels charge for HOA fees,” he noted. By pairing a vastly lower management fee structure with a lower HOA fee structure, Novembre believes ORA is uniquely positioned to maximize income for real estate buyers. “When paired together, those two changes are what allow us to bleed more to the bottom line and generate more net operating income,” he said. When asked how he’s able to offer this unique structure, Novembre revealed a long-term commitment to the project: “I keep all my income and equity invested in the project. At the end, I own a lot of units, which allows me to shoulder the cost of running that hotel, regardless of individual unit management decisions.” He contrasts this with other developers who sell out everything and then exit or keep just hotel units that are not part of the HOA. Novembre does the opposite, selling “just enough condo hotel units to get the bank funding” and holding

the rest to realize the tax-deferred income as the asset appreciates.”I want to make money with my owners. I want our interests to be 100% aligned,” he emphasized.

Location, Product, and Management: The Three Pillars of Revenue Novembre asserts that any successful real estate venture requires three things: a good location, a good product, and strong management. ORA satisfies all three. ORA is strategically located in Tampa’s most lucrative submarket, which Novembre noted is “beating its previous all-time highs” on a monthly basis. Unlike densely developed areas like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, which have thousands of condohotel units in development, downtown Tampa offers virtually no competition for short-term rental ownership. Novembre stated that his project is “the only condo-hotel in all of Tampa, downtown Tampa, that allows owners to purchase their own hotel suites.” The project’s location is bolstered by major attractions, including proximity to the only other five-star hotel, massive nearby redevelopment projects, and high-demand venues. “I’m right next door to the Bill Gates projects,” he said, citing surrounding drivers that will fuel demand. Regarding the structure itself, the design concept for ORA brings a fresh, contemporary level of luxury to the market. The building will feature a helipad, a French patisserie, a national-brand upscale signature steakhouse, a lobby bar, and a 10th-floor amenity deck described as “very Miamiesque, Vegas, think Fountain Blue coming to Tampa.” To capture the substantial business travel market, Novembre included 15,000 square feet of convention space, recognizing that the nearby Tampa International Convention Center is often booked years in advance. The final piece of the

Top Doctor Magazine / Special Issue - Luigi Novembre / 35

puzzle is management, and Novembre has secured a top industry professional. “I brought in a five-star hotel manager that’s currently managing a five-star luxury hotel in Chicago,” Novembre noted. This individual will serve as the general manager/CEO upon the hotel’s opening and will act as the lead consultant during the pre-construction phase.

Financial Projections and Investor Focus Novembre is specifically catering to high-net-worth individuals, small business owners, and physicians who seek passive, long-term income. Working with HVS, a leading hotel property valuation firm and seasoned commercial realtors, Novembre is able to share conservative revenue projections with buyers. Novembre revealed the project’s impressive expected financial forecast: “Over a five-to-sevenyear span—starting with the first full year of hotel operations—a real estate buyer could make over 221% of their money,” according to these experts’ opinion. By the end of year three, with operations fully ramped up to an expected 75% occupancy, the asset’s value is expected to be 441% of the invested capital, or over 60% per year. For physicians, the appeal is the ability to generate a passive, dependable income stream that can outlive their active professional careers. As Novembre explained, “They need something to outlive practices and generate transgenerational wealth for their family and heirs.” In the U.S., we have a powerful tax-deferral opportunity for income-producing real estate called the 1031 Exchange. Novembre explained the simplicity of the strategy: “If the 1031 exchange opportunity is still available at the time of selling your ORA unit, you’re going to simply identify a 1031 exchange opportunity, sell this product, and use those funds to purchase another

36

income-producing property without realizing taxes.” Buyers should consult with their tax professional to learn more about this program.

A Risk-Averse Approach to Development Novembre attributes his success and the swift sales of his projects to a rigorous, risk-averse development strategy. Novembre is adamant about shaving off risk before any purchaser’s funds are touched. Prior to commencement of construction, he ensures a guaranteed maximum price contract from the builder, full construction loan funding (including interest), access to utilities, clean soil conditions, soil bearing capacity tests have been completed, and performance bonds on all sub-trades. “I don’t risk one dollar before I do all my research,” he affirmed. According to the laws in the state of Florida, buyer deposit money can only be used for “hard construction costs,” not for land, soft costs, or salaries. “I literally take the first hit,” Novembre stated, emphasizing that for an owner to lose money, the developer would have to go bankrupt. This model has resulted in unprecedented sales velocity. His first condo hotel sold out in 90 days. His third sold out in 12 days. ORA is currently the fastest-selling real estate in all of Tampa, according to Novembre, with sales pacing ahead of projections.

Looking Ahead ORA, with an expected completion date of February 2029, is one of several projects Novembre’s team is pursuing. He confirmed another 91-unit condo hotel is already under construction and slated for completion by April 2026. ELDOA

A TRIBUTE TO DR. GUY VOYER

PIONEER OF POSTURAL HEALTH Written by Ashleigh Quint, MIM, PICP-SCC Peer Reviewed by Ben Velazquez, B.S., MFS, LST, CSCS, ACSM-ES, ISSA-SPN

T

he world of postural health and movement therapy lost a visionary last year with the passing of Dr. Guy Voyer. Renowned for his groundbreaking work on the spine and fascial stretching techniques, Dr. Voyer’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the field. His most notable creation, ELDOA (Étirements Longitudinaux avec Decoaptation Osteo-Articulaire), continues to help countless individuals improve their posture, relieve pain, assist with balance, proprioception, and enhance their overall well-being. His methods have benefited the general public and helped many elite athletes, such as soccer legend Zinedine Zidane, golf champion Tiger Woods, basketball star Klay Thompson, hockey player Martin Havlat, and countless other elite, professional, and Olympian sports figures.

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. GUY VOYER Dr. Guy Voyer began his career as a physical trainer before transitioning into a distinguished medical career. His early work included training prominent French bodybuilders such as Francis Benfatto and Serge Nubret. Driven by a deep passion for understanding human anatomy, biomechanics, and the interconnectedness of the body’s systems, he became a French osteopath, orthopedic surgeon, and movement specialist. His desire to go beyond conventional practices shaped Dr. Voyer’s unique approach to therapy and movement. Over his extensive career, Dr. Voyer developed a comprehensive approach to treating the body by integrating his knowledge of osteopathy, physical therapy, and fascial stretching. His quest for deeper anatomical and biomechanical understanding led him to create several innovative therapeutic methods. Among them, ELDOA stands out as a unique series of postural exercises specifically designed to target individual segments of the spine and other joints in the body, emphasizing both decompression and strengthening.

THE INVENTION OF ELDOA: A VISION FOR SPINAL HEALTH ELDOA, which stands for “Longitudinal Osteo-Articular Decoaptation Stretches,” was created by Dr. Voyer in the early 1990s as a revolutionary approach to spinal care. The concept behind ELDOA was born from Dr. Voyer’s extensive knowledge of spinal anatomy and his desire to develop a method to holistically address spinal disc compression, poor posture, and related musculoskeletal issues.

Unlike traditional stretching or spinal manipulation techniques, ELDOA focuses on creating “decoaptation” or decompression at specific joint levels of the spine. By strategically positioning the body and using fascial tension to generate a decompressive effect, ELDOA exercises can increase the space between vertebrae, improving blood flow, reducing pain, and enhancing spinal alignment. Furthermore, ELDOA helps reinforce the deep spinal stabilizers, which are crucial for maintaining good posture, while also improving the flow of information from the spine to the brain.

THE IMPACT OF ELDOA ON ATHLETES AND EVERYDAY INDIVIDUALS Dr. Voyer’s biomechanics and movement therapy expertise extended far beyond the clinic or training room. His ELDOA method has played a crucial role in the success of numerous athletes across various sports. ELDOA exercises have become a fundamental tool for many, from Zidane’s mastery on the soccer field to Tiger Woods’ longevity in golf, as they aim to enhance their performance, reduce injury risk, and maintain overall spinal health.

Beyond the world of professional sports, ELDOA has gained widespread recognition for its benefits to everyday individuals. By incorporating specific ELDOA exercises, people can improve their spinal alignment, relieve back pain, and enhance their postural health, improving their quality of life.

SAMPLE DAILY POSTURAL ELDOA PROTOCOL Incorporating a daily ELDOA protocol can be highly beneficial for a healthy, noninjured person. Below is a sample ELDOA routine:

1. 5-Minute Warm-Up: Start with gentle marching to increase blood flow and prepare the body.

2. Targeted ELDOA Exercises:

- T6/T7: Focus on creating space between the thoracic vertebrae. - C4/C5: Aimed at the cervical spine to improve neck posture and reduce tension. - L5/S1: Addresses the lumbar spine, providing decompression and alleviating lower back discomfort.

These exercises help maintain an already healthy spine and improve postural alignment by creating space in the joints and strengthening the stabilizers.

CONCLUSION Dr. Guy Voyer’s ELDOA method stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication to understanding the human body and his innovative spirit in the field of postural health. His work continues to inspire practitioners and individuals worldwide, making a significant difference in both athletic performance and daily well-being. As we continue to practice and share ELDOA, we honor Dr. Voyer’s legacy and his contributions to the world of movement therapy.

one are the days when everyone had to work a 9-5. Since 2020 especially, more and more people have been working from home and creating a schedule tailored to them. Come to find out, the 9-5 is best suited for men. Let’s explore why.

MEN VS. WOMEN’S CYCLES EVERYONE’S CYCLES

We all have daily cycles. That’s our circadian rhythm, which determines when we wake up and go to bed.¹ When you have a system or a routine, your body will naturally want to get up and sleep at the same time each day. If you think about it, we should all be suitable for a 9 to 5 workday, right? After all, we (in theory) are ready to conquer our day in the morning when we get up. Over the day, we progressively lose steam, and by the time 5 o’clock rolls around, we’re ready to be done. We have just enough time for dinner and downtime before bed. However, men and women do feel differently each day based on their hormones.

MEN’S CYCLES

In addition to a normal circadian rhythm, men also experience a diurnal rhythm of testosterone.² That means they experience the same thing every day with their hormones. When testosterone levels are normal, testosterone is at its highest in the morning and decreases over the day.³ As men sleep, testosterone rises, so it’s at its peak again the next day. In other words, they’re ready to seize the day in the morning and feel ready to clock out by the end of the day. And the same thing repeats every single day.

WOMEN’S CYCLES

Hypothetically, women should feel the same way based on their circadian rhythm. However, any woman knows she doesn’t feel the same each day, and it’s not just in her head. That’s because a woman’s cycle works on roughly a 28day pattern. A woman’s key hormones, progesterone and estrogen, dramatically shift over this time. The main events in a woman’s cycle are ovulation and menstruation, but the body’s hormones are still working in between these points.⁴ All that to say, a woman will feel energized and have more mental clarity to complete tasks at specific points during the month. But at other times, she’ll feel grateful if she just makes it out of bed.

STRESS AFFECTS WOMEN DIFFERENTLY THAN MEN Though stress is disadvantageous for both men and women, adding insult to injury, stress can hurt women more than men when it comes to fertility.⁵ When chronically stressed, our body enters a fight-or-flight mode, halting essential functions and causing gut imbalances. Stress causes our cortisol to spike, which, again, isn’t good for anyone's health overall. However, while men have cortisol, their testosterone doesn’t come from it. In other words, they won’t experience fertility problems from stress quite like women. Women, on the other hand, primarily use the hormones progesterone and cortisol to conceive children. Cortisol is not bad, but when stress causes it to swell, everything else is imbalanced, making it difficult for women to have children. That likely explains why 1 out of 5 women experience infertility during the time they should be most fertile. Even if a woman doesn’t intend to have children, she’ll still be hurt by high cortisol with depression, anxiety, and mood swings, among other things.

WHAT WOMEN CAN DO TRACK YOUR CYCLE

The good news is that women can track their cycles to understand what’s going on with their hormones. Even if they’re not planning to have kids right now, knowing what’s going on to prepare is helpful. This app called 28 is a great resource to track your cycle.⁶ If you don’t have a cycle, you can establish a monthly routine to help regulate it—which can help bring it back! The same app uses the moon as a monthly schedule if you so choose.

EAT AND EXERCISE WITH YOUR CYCLE

Once you know your cycle, you can eat and exercise along with it.⁷ As you might’ve guessed, there are times in the month when more intense exercise would be beneficial. At other points, though, it’s best to take a step back and relax. You can also eat foods that help balance your hormones. Getting in touch with your cycle can help regulate your hormones and make it easier to function.

MANAGE STRESS

You must do what you can to alleviate stress. If possible, take a step back from certain responsibilities in order to not overwhelm yourself. Don’t be hard on yourself when you’re at that time of the month. You can also trick your body into calming itself by activating the vagus nerve.⁸

CONCLUSION Though atypical job trends are rising, that doesn’t mean we can completely abandon the 9-5. But if women track their cycles, they can learn how to work with their hormones to make the most of every day.
