As a leading expert in the intersection of mental health, multilingualism, the Latinx community and disability services, particularly for the deaf and autistic communities, Dr. Galloza’s work reflects her commitment to breaking barriers and expanding access to crucial resources. Her story is one of perseverance, compassion, and unwavering resolve to make a difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked.

EARLY INSPIRATION AND FAMILY INFLUENCE Dr. Galloza’s passion for understanding human behavior and its underlying motivations can be traced back to her childhood. Growing up in Puerto Rico, she was deeply influenced by her father, a math teacher who went beyond his role as an educator to create opportunities for underprivileged children in his community. He initiated a program that allowed students to participate in extracurricular activities like volleyball, but only if they performed well academically.

This initiative had a profound effect on many children, some of whom went on to pursue higher education and improve their life circumstances.

“My dad always taught me that sometimes a person just needs an opportunity,” Dr. Galloza reflected. “That really shaped my vision of how people’s lives could change with the right support.”

Her early fascination with understanding why people behave the way they do eventually led her to clinical psychology.

Dr. Galloza wanted to explore how different circumstances—such as poverty, limited access to resources, or family dynamics—affect behavior.

“I was always curious about what could have happened differently if someone had been provided more support or had different opportunities,” she said.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE DEAF COMMUNITY Dr. Galloza’s journey into working with the deaf community was sparked by an encounter with a trailblazer in the field—Alice González, the first deaf individual to complete a bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Puerto Rico. González’s achievement was monumental in a country with significant barriers for deaf individuals in education and mental health services. This meeting opened Dr. Galloza’s eyes to the hindrances faced by the deaf community, particularly the lack of accessible mental health services.

Determined to make a difference, she shifted her research focus to this underserved population. However, she quickly realized Puerto Rico lacked the resources to support her ambitions.

“I was told that I couldn’t conduct the type of research I wanted to do for the deaf community because there was no one in Puerto Rico who could help me,” she recalled.

Undeterred, Dr. Galloza made the life-changing decision to leave Puerto Rico and pursue her studies in the United States.

OVERCOMING LANGUAGE BARRIERS AND PURSUING RESEARCH EXCELLENCE Dr. Galloza’s determination to serve the deaf community led her to Gallaudet University, a premier institution for the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

However, her journey was far from easy. When she arrived at Gallaudet, Dr. Galloza didn’t speak English fluently and had no knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), the primary mode of communication at the university. This situation mirrored the experience of many deaf individuals navigating a world dominated by hearing people—a reality Dr. Galloza would come to understand intimately.

“I arrived at Gallaudet and experienced what a deaf individual faces every day in a hearing world,” she said. “I couldn’t communicate with people, and many assumed I wasn’t capable because of the language barrier.”

“The research that I was told I couldn’t do ended up being the very work that won me the award,” she reflected. “It was recognition that all the hard work—the struggles with language, the late nights, the uncertainty—was worth it.”

BRIDGING GAPS IN MULTILINGUAL AND MULTICULTURAL MENTAL HEALTH CARE One of the most remarkable aspects of Dr. Galloza’s clinical practice is her ability to navigate the complexities of multilingualism and multiculturalism in mental health care.

As a fluent speaker of Spanish, English, and ASL, she has been able to serve diverse clients in ways that most clinicians cannot. She often works with deaf individuals who have Spanish-speaking parents or families where members speak multiple languages.

This multilingual ability has proven invaluable in bridging communication gaps between families and ensuring all parties are actively involved in the therapeutic process.

“I’ve had sessions where I’m working with a deaf individual, their Spanish-speaking parents, and other family members who only speak English,” Dr. Galloza explained. “It’s essential to have a clinician who can navigate those languages and create a space where everyone can be heard.”

Dr. Galloza also emphasized the importance of understanding a client’s cultural background, particularly when addressing mental health issues.

“Talking about mental health in a language that’s unfamiliar can be incredibly difficult,” she said. “It’s my job to ensure that language barriers don’t become another obstacle to receiving the care they need.”

Despite the challenges, she was determined to succeed.

While Dr. Galloza’s work with the deaf community has been groundbreaking, her personal journey as a mother has also profoundly shaped her approach to clinical practice. During her PhD studies, Dr. Galloza gave birth to her son, who was later diagnosed with autism.

Dr. Galloza highlighted the need for flexibility and creativity in treatment planning, especially when working with underserved populations.

“Even though I was finishing my doctorate, I had to learn so much more—about speech therapy, occupational therapy, AAC devices, and alternative communication methods,” she said.

Her experience as the mother of a non-verbal, low-functioning autistic child gave her a new perspective on the challenges faced by families of autistic individuals.

“Being in that position—navigating the world of autism while also being a clinical psychologist—has made me a much better clinician,” she reflected.

“It’s not just about understanding the theory or the science anymore. It’s about truly empathizing with what these families go through on a daily basis.”

Dr. Galloza’s personal experiences have made her a better clinician and expanded the services she offers at her practice.

She now works extensively with autistic individuals and their families, providing support that goes beyond traditional therapy.

“I feel that my experience with my son has given me the insight to offer more realistic, practical support to parents and families who are navigating similar challenges,” she said.

A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION AND MENTORSHIP In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Galloza is a dedicated educator and mentor to future clinical psychologists. She teaches at the PhD level at Gallaudet University, where she challenges her students to think critically about the practical application of psychological theory.

“I tell my students that while it’s important to understand the

50 IS THE NEW 20

HOW TO GET BIGGER AND BETTER WITH AGE PART II

o quote myself in Part I of “50 is the new 20”: “To successfully achieve longevity in bodybuilding and fitness, especially if the goal is to continue to improve the physique over time, you must be not only consistent, dedicated, and disciplined, but also intelligent and calculating in your efforts. In other words, your entire program must evolve as you move along to keep pace with the changes in the body and its systems that naturally manifest as we get older.

You simply cannot expect to be able to train the same way you did 20 or 30 years ago and continue to achieve the same type of progress. In fact, in most cases, this approach will cause regression or injuries to occur.”

This is now: Nowadays, my goals are somewhat different, although I am still seeking more muscle mass (and always will be). However, more than anything, I am meticulously attempting to “sculpt” the perfect physique (as perfect as my genetics will allow).

I focus on refining every muscle group, including better overall shape, lines and tie-ins. I also seek better separation between each muscle and improved proportion and aesthetics.

To accomplish these things, I now utilize many different exercises, as well as angles, grips, and stances.

In part one of this article, my discussion centered around warm-ups, exercise form, training frequency and training volume.

I will now explore some other vital areas of this topic, which will complete the blueprint for successfully navigating through your physical fitness program as you continue adding candles to your birthday cake.

I still include at least one basic movement per workout but will then venture towards more isolation exercises using all types of dumbbells, cables, and machines. In fact, I am constantly trying new ways to position my body and alter the angle of the push or pull to target a muscle or section of a muscle with laser-like precision. Don’t get me wrong, I still love to lift heavy and can still move prestigious poundage, but my challenge now is acquiring more size and creating a

healthy, functional, and physically fit masterpiece.

That was then: When I started lifting weights in my mid-teens, I had only one goal…to get BIG. I needed to build muscle and bulk because at 5’11.5 and 125 lbs., my pet hamster looked more threatening than me! After extensive reading and research, I discovered that bare, heavy exercises were the fastest road to raw size.

My program was based on essential (mainly compound) movements such as squats, leg presses, deadlifts, bent rows, bench presses, incline presses, weighted dips, military presses, barbell curls, and skull crushers.

Unlike many misinformed beginners, I stayed away from the fancy machine and cable exercises and busted my butt with good old heavy metal. And let me tell you - it worked! I got bigger and stronger, and everyone around me took notice.

Most people believed I was on the juice - and I was! Apple, grape, and orange were my favorites! However, after many years of training in this manner, I noticed that I looked more like a wrestler or football player than a bodybuilder. I was a mound of mass without shape or artistry. In addition, my joints were taking a lot of abuse, and I began to accumulate my share of aches, pains and injuries. But that was then…

Rep Range That was then: Just like my understanding that basic lifts manifested muscle most efficiently, I also came to believe that heavy weights and lower reps (4-5 or so per set) were the Holy Grail of mass-gaining. As I mentioned above, this approach worked for several years at least. However, after a time, I found that diminishing returns, progressive aches and pains, and nagging injuries began to take the place of ongoing progress.

But this did not stop me; I thought the solution lay lifting even heavier. The stronger a muscle, the bigger a muscle, right?

Well, right and wrong. It took me years to finally embrace the fact that not only are muscles made up of different fiber types that respond uniquely to varied rep ranges, but also that our anabolic machinery needs to be stimulated through more than just one pathway if reaching your genetic potential is the goal.

Yes, get stronger, but do so in many rep ranges - not just the one. But that was then…

This is now: Over my many years as a bodybuilder and coach to hundreds of top athletes, bodybuilders, high-power CEOs and members of the entertainment industry, I have developed and pioneered several world-renowned training protocols (PRRS™, ESPX2™, and FTX2™, to name a few) that are based on the principle of both progression and variation. They work so remarkably well because they were created with the understanding that the human body is an amazingly adaptable machine and requires a wide variety of stimuli to progress in a continuous fashion.

Where in the beginning, my training was fairly onedimensional, now it is utterly dynamic – utilizing a wide variety of rep ranges, lifting tempos, rests between sets, intensity techniques and more.

Every week, my goal is to attack the muscles in a unique manner and force the central nervous system to deal with a unique form of stress. Heavyweights still play a role but are only one part of a multi-faceted approach to hypertrophy, strength enhancement and functionality. This system has rewarded me with significant and steady gains in muscle, a lack of training-related injuries, and a far more challenging and enjoyable method of working out.

Focus and Concentration That was then: Without a doubt, since day one in the gym, I was serious as a heart attack and chock full of drive and intensity. However, although I always utilized a relatively strict form in most movements, I never really concentrated on the action of the muscle while it was working. My main goal was to move the weight from point A to point B under good control, but my mind was not necessarily focused on the mechanics of the exercise and how my muscles felt while contracting, lengthening and filling with blood. But that was then…

This is now: As the years go by, I can feel myself developing a better and better connection between my brain and body. The old saying, “Put your mind into your muscle,” should not be taken lightly, as scientific evidence suggests that the more you think about

the working muscle, the more fibers you will get to fire. And when you exhaust more fibers, you are on the road to igniting faster and more profound progress.

When I am performing a set, I drown out everything that is going on around me and make sure to feel my target muscle work through every inch of the movement - from the concentric to peak contraction and the eccentric to stretch.

I call this “Precision Training,” as I literally picture myself as a machine - like the inner mechanics of a working clock. Every repetition is deliberate, meticulous, and precise, with my body locked into a position allowing me to zero in on precisely the area of a muscle I wish to focus upon. I feel that I am training on a higher (almost meditative) level these days, and I have no doubt it significantly contributes to my ability to improve my physique continually.

Not Getting OlderGetting Bigger and Better!

Unlike most sports and activities where age often hinders performance, when it comes to bodybuilding (or just building the body), I believe you can enjoy continual improvements well into your 50s and even 60s if you make the proper adjustments to your training and nutrition strategy.

What you need to do is work with nature and not against it.

Listen to your body and pay attention to the signals it gives you. Understand that building the body is a lifelong process requiring a more sophisticated and targeted approach with each passing year.

However, never look at aging as a detriment, at least not when it comes to your physique. Consider that as time passes, you can continue to build more muscle, greater strength, enhanced fitness and improved functionality, which is about as close to “the fountain of youth” as one could ever hope to get.

SUPER-AGER STRATEGIES

Want to live longer? Want to improve the quality of that newly extended life? The protocols that deliver a better quality of extended life are already widely known and used.

Elite bodybuilding methodology has created a legion of superagers, human beings, male and female, that look, act, and feel decades younger than their chronologic reality. The good news is that these protocols recommended for quality-of-life improvement will also make you fit, lean, and muscular (as an extra-added bonus).

Factually, this is backward: becoming fit, lean, and muscular is what makes you a super-ager. Regular folks should expropriate hardcore bodybuilding tactics, detune them a bit (make elite tactics user-friendly without eviscerating them), and, with patience and adherence, dramatically morph the physique over time. The Transformational Triumvirate consists of resistance training, cardiovascular training, and nutrition.

Nutritional Empiricism: Detox and re-energize…as an extra-added bonus, live longer, improve your quality of life - and get ripped!

Becoming more muscular and losing body fat not only slows or stops the aging process, but when done right, with the requisite intensity and sustained adherence, the aging process reverses. Be aware that the single most important step a person can take towards dramatic physical improvement in physique and performance is not training. The critical step is to clean up the diet by improving the quality of the food fuel we put into this exquisite machinery, the soft machine we call the human body.

The most important leg of the super-ager transformative triumvirate is nutrition – what food fuel do we select? When do we consume our food? How much do we consume?

Without disciplined eating, progress will necessarily be subpar. A man can be as strong as Samson, possess the cardio of a locomotive – and still be obese. Without coordinated nutrition, you are just training. Disciplined eating is the foundational practice of the transformational triumvirate.

Having said this, to optimize physiological results, diet alone is insufficient. Atop a regimented dietary approach, institute a strength training regimen and a cardiovascular protocol.

A successful super-ager always has a plan. Periodization is sophisticated and detailed preplanning. The classical

periodized cycle is twelve weeks long, with three 4-week micro-cycles tucked inside a three-month macro-cycle. What are the characteristics of a classic periodization cycle? How do you periodize nutrition? Firstly, establish body weight and body composition overarching goals. Coordinate nutritional protocols with the exercise protocols. Our overarching goal is enduring and unchanging: build lean muscle mass and oxidize stored body fat.

• Establish overarching physiological goals. Goals need to be motivating yet realistic.

• Set goals within a specific timeframe. The typical “cycle” is 10 to 16 weeks in length.

• Reverse-engineer individualized goals backward to a starting point.

• Simultaneously, pursue multiple goals.

• Establish sequential weekly benchmarks. Systematically attain these micro-goals.

• Periodize both exercise formats.

• Periodize nutrition.

• Periodize scheduling: learn how to fit all the aspects of the transformational triumvirate into your life.

Here is a sobering statistic: 70% of America is obese. The cause of our obesity is (primarily) our choice of fuel: designed to run on high-octane racing fuel when tuned up, muscledup, and lean, the human body possesses a fabulous powerto-weight ratio. In top form, the human body is akin to a 780-horsepower V-8 Ferrari 488. Modern humans try to run fickle Ferraris, not on highly combustible, drag-racing nitromethane. No, modern humans insist on fueling the Ferrari with kerosene.

Trash fuel gums up machinery, performance plummets, and eventually, inevitably, a catastrophic breakdown occurs.

All preventable: the first order of business is to clean up the fuel and purge your caloric selections. For eons, all men everywhere ate nothing but organic. In 1950, 1% of the American adult population had pre-diabetes. In 2024, that has risen to 50%. Again, this is attributable to the kerosene we insist on using to fuel our Ferrari body.

We all know the science: eating ultra-processed calories causes the fuel to inject insulin into the bloodstream. Insulin’s job is to take blood sugar out of the bloodstream and deposit the sugar into a receptive cell. Gummed-up insulin receptor

sites, clogged with kerosene, are incapable of accepting the blood sugar. The body misinterprets the inability of the mitochondria (the cells 244-cubic inch, four-cam, twin-turbo V-8 engine) to accept blood sugar. The body falls apart since the cells are not accepting the circulating sugar and then overcompensates, sending more insulin into the bloodstream.

Here is an inconvenient fact: when insulin floods the bloodstream, there can be no body fat oxidation. The world’s best, most effective dieters are competitive bodybuilders.

Long ago, they figured out how to control insulin via nutritional manipulation. Set aside the PED-abusing, overinflated, professional bodybuilders. Instead, focus on the allnatural lifetime drug-free bodybuilders, the kind you can see competing at local bodybuilding shows held at a high school in your neighborhood.

You will be amazed how even at the local level, the elites that compete, be they neophyte teenagers or 70 + year old competitors, all the winners and top competitors, are regularly and routinely attaining sub-10%, single-digit body fat percentiles – this while retaining 90% of the muscle mass built in the off-season. What is the bodybuilder’s protocol? They combine weight training with aerobic training and underpin the intense exercise with incredibly strict bodybuilding-style nutrition.

The heart and soul of competitive bodybuilding is not the training; it is the nutrition. With dietary discipline and the ability to adhere consistently, attaining a single-digit body fat percentage becomes possible. The smart trainee, someone with no intention of ever competing in a bodybuilding competition, would still be well-advised to expropriate the big check squares that identify and characterize bodybuilding training and its (inconveniently unbending) dietary discipline.

To build muscle, you need high-intensity weight training. To improve aerobic fitness, you need sweaty cardio. To attain a sub-10% body fat percentile, combine clean calorie dieting with intense and sweaty exercise. Below is a nutritional snapshot of a bodybuilder’s daily meal schedule. As the

competition approaches, they slowly reduce starch carbs (potatoes, rice, and oatmeal.) This creates a blast furnace metabolism (amplified by exercise) that oxidizes the last vestiges of body fat.

At the culmination of a successful lean-out phase, the pendulum stroke ceases moving in that direction. Naturally, it swings back in the oppositive direction: the perfect time to commence a mass-building phase is coming off a successful lean-out phase. What better way and time to slowly add lean, fat-free muscle than rebounding from a low-cal lean-out phase? What a joy to slowly add back those delicious complex carbohydrates. For a competitive bodybuilder, the periodized pendulum swing is eternal, from one extreme to another.

As the years roll by, those who adhere tightly to the transformational triumvirate, those who become attuned to and obey the natural rhythms of the periodized pendulum swing, inevitably, invariably, undergo a radical and dramatic physiological metamorphosis. While mainstream fitness is meek and mild, a mile wide and an inch deep, hardcore bodybuilder and super-ager protocols are an inch wide and a mile deep.
