“Neurology is up and coming with lots of opportunities. If you’re here in Michigan, neurology is an excellent field with plenty of opportunity, that’s for sure,” Dr. Abousamra concluded.

like meaningless busywork. Amid all this difficulty, it is essential that med students not overlook the unique ways to help shape the future of health care policy. Given the proper motivation, med students have numerous opportunities to create health care policies long before graduation.

WHY MED STUDENTS SHOULD HELP SHAPE HEALTH CARE POLICY Getting involved in shaping health care policy benefits the professional development of med students. Furthermore, it will allow them to make a tangible impact even before they earnestly begin patient care. For professional development, students in the medical field gain invaluable experience with the way American health care works under systems like the Affordable Care Act. Pre-med students can also gain a unique professional advantage by strengthening their medical school applications by creating journal articles and other works.

The primary benefits of vitamin D are healthy bone and tooth growth, but it also plays a critical role in regulating the function of your immune system. Vitamin D increases your body’s ability to fight disease, especially severe flu symptoms or heart disease.

Scientific research suggests that vitamin D plays a role in our mental health as well. Interpreting that research is tricky because it creates a chicken-and-egg situation. Suppose individuals who experience depression spend an unusual amount of time indoors. In that case, we should expect them to have lower levels of sunshineinduced vitamin D. CAN VITAMIN D HELP ME FIGHT COVID-19?

Although not a cure-all, vitamin D and its role in improving immune function have prompted many scientists to wonder if it might help ward off the COVID-19 infection. A recent study from Israel has examined the connection between vitamin D and COVID-19. After examining 253 patients in a local hospital, the study concluded that individuals who had vitamin D deficiencies before getting infected were 14 times more likely to develop severe COVID-19. n March 2021, a young, talented dentist passed away at age 34 from oral cancer. While battling this illness, he sold his dental practice and began writing a series of blogs about his experience. His writings made it clear

that he had accepted what life had given him, found peace and offered his readers words of comfort and wisdom. After his passing, his sister, a talented dentist herself, compiled his blogs and published them in a book, Life Interrupted: Dr. Dua’s Survival Guide.

That incredible young man was Dr. Manu Dua, and his sister was Dr. Parul Dua Makkar. In the year since her brother’s passing, Dr. Makkar has devoted much of her time to honor his memory. In addition to publishing the book, she advocates for awareness and early detection of oral cancer.

An Advocate for Early Detection The most significant factor in beating oral cancer is early detection. But there is little public awareness and no national screening program. Dr. Makkar is working to change that.
