YES4YOUTH

Cell C heeded government’s call for corporations to improve their B-BBEE scorecards by investing in job creation through the Youth Employment Service (YES) programme. Many of the youth were placed in Cell C stores nationally receiving training with the ultimate goal of creating employment within Cell C and the broader ICT sector.

M4JAM INITIATIVE

In late 2019, Cell C worked with M4Jam when we initiated a project to understand the dynamics of the informal telecommunications retail market. Jobbers assisted with mapping informal traders nationwide using geo-location data. Most of the jobbers who find part-time, temporary work through M4Jam are not employed in the formal economy and rely on gig-work for income. 96% of the jobbers are African and 65% Female. The M4Jam is aimed at youth empowerment, employment creation, skills and enterprise development.

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, Cell C made a direct difference and provided an additional funding of R2 million that will pay users or jobbers to complete training tasks from the safety of their homes and all via mobile devices during the lockdown.

“I’m able to do jobs while I’m at home and safe,” says M4Jam Jobber Donald Ngwenya. Cell C has helped us a lot, we are able to work, and we are able to earn while we are at home” he continued.

In 2020, Cell C has once again been nominated for the Top Gender Empowered: Corporate Citizenship Award for the 16th Annual Standard Bank Top Women Awards. The award is in recognition of the work done under the company’s ‘Gender Equality’ pillar, for the three initiatives: Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day, CellCgirl and CellCgirl Bursary Fund. This is the fourth time Cell C has been nominated in this category and we won 3 of these awards, in 2014, 2018 and 2019.

JULIET MHANGO Chief Human Capital Development and Transformation Officer

Best advice and who gave it:

“Everyone has a purpose in life. Focus on your purpose, your vision, put in the hard work required and never give up. Don’t let people’s opinions of you lose sight of it” - these were my late father’s words. I have applied them in my career and my personal life.

Most inspiring business leader:

I am inspired by Lillian Barnard, Microsoft South Africa CEO. The ICT sector is a male dominated industry and it is very inspiring to see a female CEO in this space. Over and above being CEO, she is an inspirational leader and strives to make a difference in this sector. She is passionate about empowerment and the advancement of women with some of the initiatives that she has been involved in.

Way you relax:

I enjoy spending quality time with my family. I am a mother of three, with a full time career. I really make time for family during my down time. I love reading. I also love travelling both locally and internationally.

Business philosophy:

“We rise by lifting others”. This is my philosophy and I believe that I can empower others through my work. In the business world, too many people chase power and tear others down to get ahead. I believe in the complete opposite of that. True leadership is about empowering others to succeed in their own right.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE KEY CHALLENGE FOR TRANSFORMATION IN YOUR SECTOR?

Great strides are being made within the sector with regards to transformation. However I believe more needs to be done around developing critical and scarce skills within the sector. There are certain skills which are very hard to come by and there is a limited supply of talent. We need to focus on empowering our youth in upskilling them for digital transformation, providing access to the sector through sustainable enterprise and supplier development initiatives.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU THINK THE NEW GENERATION OF BLACK LEADERS ARE GOING TO NEED? HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY THOSE LEADERS IN YOUR BUSINESS?

A very important skill for black leaders is being able to empower and develop others. It is about coaching and mentoring those coming up behind us. True leadership is about growing others and also creating growth opportunities for them. This is the only way that we will have sustainable transformation and not just limited opportunities for a select few.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT CHALLENGES YOU HAVE HAD TO FACE IN YOUR TRANFORMATION AGENDA?

The most important challenges we have had to face have been putting transformation on the agenda when the business faces challenging times. Cell C has gone through difficult times, like many companies in South Africa operating in a tough economic climate. Despite this, transformation has remained a strategic business imperative. We have managed to deliver on our transformation objectives. Our focus has been on leveraging business initiatives and aligning those with the transformation agenda.

IF YOU HAD TO START YOUR WORKING LIFE OVER AGAIN, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOURSELF IN HINDSIGHT?

I would advise myself to look for mentors and coaches to support me through my career journey. I find that mentorship opens doors much faster than relying purely on yourself. I only realised this much later in my career. You need that person who can support and help you navigate the corporate space. Many people have great skills, but are not able to navigate their way through the dynamics that come with a corporate career.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE TRANSFORMATION IS SIGNIFICANT IN SA?

Transformation is important in South Africa. Great strides have been made, but we still have massive gaps that remain in society as a result of our legacy. As corporates, we cannot sit back and expect government to fix everything, we have to drive transformation in our respective space. Whilst government has made transformation an obligation for corporations through legislation, corporates need to embrace the true spirit of transformation.
