SOUVENIR PROGRAMME | 08-09 SEPTEMBER 2026 | JOHANNESBURG
Her Power. Africa’s Future A M P L I F Y I N G
W O M E N - L E D
G R O W T H
What are you going to do with these two days? We already know that women are making an extraordinary contribution to business and to the African economy. We’ve been researching, recognising and celebrating that contribution at Topco for more than 25 years. The question now is: how do we turn that into more opportunity? How do we help more women build bigger businesses, access markets, win contracts, move into leadership positions and create opportunities for the women coming behind them? That’s what I want this conference to be about. Because ultimately, the value of being here isn’t just what happens on the stage. It’s who is sitting next to you. It’s the person you meet over coffee. It’s the corporate buyer you dare to introduce yourself to. It’s the entrepreneur who has already solved the problem you are struggling with. It’s the conversation that turns into a meeting, and hopefully the meeting that turns into business.
CEO's Welcome Note Welcome to the Standard Bank Top Women Conference 2026 I’ve written a lot of welcome messages for Top Women over the years, and I could talk about how proud we are of the journey, how far we’ve come and how much still needs to be done. But this year I want to talk about something slightly different...
That’s the real opportunity of Top Women. We have some of South Africa and Africa’s leading organisations in this room. We have entrepreneurs who are building remarkable businesses. We have women who have broken through barriers, made mistakes, learnt lessons and succeeded – and importantly, are prepared to share how they did it. So don’t just collect business cards. Ask questions. Find out what people need. Tell them what you do. Make the introduction. Ask for the meeting. And when you leave here on 9 September, follow up. If you meet thirty new people over these two days, you probably don’t need thirty opportunities to come from them.
One relationship can change a business. That is something we have seen through Top Women over many years. Recognition matters, but what happens after the recognition matters even more – the relationships, the credibility, the access and the doors that open. In fact, our programme this year deliberately brings former Top Women Entrepreneur winners back to talk about exactly that: what happened after they won and what they learned along the way.
Introduce yourself to somebody you’ve wanted to do business with. Help another woman make a connection. And before you leave, have at least one opportunity already in motion. If 500 people walk out of this conference having done that, imagine the economic impact we can create. Welcome to the Standard Bank Top Women Conference 2026. Let’s build something.
Our theme this year is “Her Power. Africa’s Future. Amplifying Women-Led Growth.” For me, the important word in that sentence is growth. Growth in businesses. Growth in careers. Growth in confidence. Growth in networks. And ultimately, growth in our economy. And none of that happens alone. One thing I have learnt over 25 years of Top Women is that successful people create opportunities for other people. Women supporting women matters enormously. So do organisations that deliberately open their procurement pipelines and leadership structures. And so do men who use their positions and networks to advocate for talented women and open doors. That is why our relationship with Standard Bank and all of our partners is so important. This isn’t simply sponsorship. It is about bringing together people who have opportunities with people who have the talent, ideas and businesses to take advantage of them. So my challenge to you over the next two days is very simple: Don’t just attend this conference. Use it. Meet someone you wouldn’t normally meet. Ask a question you wouldn’t normally ask.

Mining has always been about discovering value where others cannot see it. It remains one of the most important industries in the world, powering economies, enabling innovation, and supporting millions of livelihoods. Behind every electric vehicle, every smartphone, every renewable energy solution, and every new technology lies something less visible: mining. Yet the greatest treasures are not always easily found on the surface. Gold, platinum, rare earth minerals – lie hidden beneath layers of rock, pressure and time. Unlocking them requires vision, persistence, technical excellence. Above all, it requires the belief something extraordinary is waiting beneath the surface. I have come to believe the same is true of people, especially women. For generations, women’s potential was buried beneath stereotypes, bias and doubt. Women were told mining was too dangerous, too technical or simply not a place for them. Yet women entered mining, stayed,
led and helped transform the industry. Today, the question is no longer whether women belong in mining. That question has been answered. The real question is whether mining can afford not to fully unlock the potential of women. The answer is no. As the industry navigates climate change, technological disruption, evolving workforce expectations, and increasing stakeholder scrutiny, future competitiveness and the sustainability of the sector will depend not only on technical expertise but on our ability to attract and retain talent. Research has shown that diverse teams make better decisions, come up with more innovative solutions, experience improved safety and wellbeing, and generate higher returns. Our future, therefore, depends on our ability to build trust, foster inclusion, and lead through complexity. These are leadership skills that women demonstrate every day.
To build an inclusive industry that is fit for the future, we must focus on four simple truths:
KNOW YOUR POWER
PROTECTION MATTERS
EMPOWERMENT
UNITED WE GO FURTHER
One of the greatest barriers facing women is often invisible. It is the quiet voice that asks: Do I really belong here?
Potential can only flourish where people feel safe.
Empowerment is not about giving women power. Women already have power.
Perhaps the most powerful force of all is unity.
Many women know this feeling. I know it, too. Early in my career, I often found myself one of very few women in the room, questioning whether I belonged. Over time, I learned an important lesson: confidence does not come before courage. Confidence follows courage. Every difficult conversation, every challenge accepted despite fear, and every moment we choose to speak up helps build confidence. The future of mining is not waiting for women to become more confident before they lead. It is waiting for them to recognise the value they already bring. Before we can change our industry, we must first believe in our own potential.
Safety in mining extends beyond physical wellbeing. It includes dignity, respect, inclusion and psychological safety. No woman should have to choose between building a successful career and protecting her dignity. Early in my career, during my first trip underground, I experienced harassment. Reporting it was not easy, but what stayed with me was the response of a leader who made it clear that such behaviour would not be tolerated. His actions sent a powerful message: You belong here, and I will protect your right to be here. That is what leadership looks like. Protection is not only about policies. It is about culture. It is about creating workplaces free from harassment, discrimination and bias. It is about leaders who act decisively, challenge unacceptable behaviour and ensure every person feels respected and valued. Because dignity should never be negotiable.
It is about creating conditions for that power to be recognised, developed and realised. Throughout my career, mentors and sponsors opened doors, challenged me to grow and helped me find my voice. They gave me something even more valuable than opportunity: confidence. A mentor speaks to you. A sponsor speaks about you when you are not in the room. We need both. Talent alone is not enough. It must be recognised, advocated for and trusted. Every leader has a responsibility to create opportunities for others and help develop the next generation of leaders.
For too long, women were conditioned to believe there was room for only one woman at the top. In reality, every woman who succeeds makes it easier for another woman to succeed. Sisterhood is more than solidarity. It is strength multiplied. Every barrier broken becomes a door opened. Every success becomes a shared victory. Success is not measured by how high we climb, but by how many people rise because we chose to lift them. At the same time, building an inclusive mining industry is not a women’s agenda. It is a leadership agenda. Some of the greatest champions in my career have been men who challenged outdated thinking, created opportunities and judged capability before gender.
We will only build the future together. So let us commit to knowing our power, protecting one another, empowering others and standing united.
Mining has always been about uncovering hidden value. The next great discovery will not be found beneath layers of rock, but in the talent, leadership and potential that has too often remained unseen.
Because when we unlock the full potential of women, we do more than transform individual careers. We strengthen organisations, improve performance and secure the future of our industry.
The future of mining does not just depend on what or how we mine. It depends on whom we empower.
