The GARDENING GENT with Jon Carloftis

Are there any shade-loving annuals or perennials you recommend that will have summer blooms?

Oh the SHADE of it!  When you have shade, you generally have less blooms but here are some of my favorites:

ANNUALS:

Impatiens can give you luscious blooms with shade, and although I’m usually a one color person when it comes to big masses of blooms, I must say that when folks put every color of Impatiens together it is simply breathtaking!

Begonias are simply the EASIEST plant of all time. I love the Dragon Wing ones, especially in reds, pinks and the Baby Wings in whites … honestly, at the end of each season, I look at them still blooming in November and ask myself why I wasted my time on anything else.

Lobelia always catches my eye in the spring because they come in my favorite blue, light blue and white. However, if you don’t keep them well watered in the heat, they will slowly wither away…

Coleus is for the foliage – they do have an interesting bloom, but at the cost of the foliage. If you keep deadheading the blooms, the foliage is much better and vibrant. The ones we grew up with in the 70s aren’t my fave, but our grandparents’ varieties are so much more delightful for the garden.

Caladiums are another foliage plant that I’m obsessed with, because they add much to the garden with colors of white, pink, red and even chartreuse. Some like the shade and some like the sun, so make sure you get the right one for your space.

Fuchsia have the bloom that looks like a ballerina, spinning in the wind. I mean, come on, how could you not just love that? I always got a hanging basket for my Momma and hung it on the back porch overlooking the Rockcastle River at my family’s home.

PERENNIALS:

Virginia Bluebells are native, come back each year and spread, plus disappear not long after blooming to give you more space for plantings!

Forget-Me-Nots are another BLUE color that I’m crazy about and they will reseed and spread all over.

Cardinal Flower is a deep red, wet-tolerant perennial that’s spectacular for its color and long-lasting bloom.

Primroses have flowers that are so bright, they are almost electric. Yellows, pinks, oranges … feels like a Lilly Pulitzer showroom.

Coral Bells are a green with a coral colored bloom on a stalk, but the newer varieties are as much about the foliage as they are about the flower. Chartreuses, burgundies and silvers are just a few of the choices that will give much to the garden.

Foxglove are wonderfully old-fashioned with bloom spikes in soft yellows, pinks and whites. They are what the heart medicine Digitalis (it’s their Latin name) comes from, so if you have a pet that chews on plants, don’t use this one…

TOUR OF HOMES

There are few homes remaining today that embody the craftmanship and beauty indicative of days gone by. This Richmond Road stunner does just that.

Interior designer and homeowner Barbara Ricke has kept the home’s original integrity intact while embracing its stately presence with elegant furnishings and fine art curated from around the world. Built 100 years ago in 1925, this southern Federal-style home stood on hundreds of acres during one of the most pivotal times in our city’s history. The home was originally owned by the first car dealer in Lexington, who brought the Model T to

town. When Barbara purchased the home decades later, she became its second owner.

The home was in need of new landscaping. Barbara wanted the house to have the grand presence it deserved, so she had the soil literally pushed up so that the front appears elevated from the road. The massive front porch serves as the perfect spot for afternoon tea or evening cocktails.

Barbara wanted to decorate the home to evoke a warm, inviting southern feel, peppered with upscale finishes and modern amenities.

She kept all of the old leaded glass windows intact and preserved the doors and original brass hardware. She utilized a high-gloss paint throughout to allow the home’s remarkable original elements to shine through, such as the stunning staircase handrail, which is made of solid mahogany. She added larger crown molding and bigger trim throughout the house, while low-voltage lighting offered a tranquil ambiance.

Barbara’s incredible art collection gives the home the aura of a gallery. Pieces from many of her clients grace the walls, including Muhammad Ali and Sir Nick Faldo, as well as CBS Sports commentators Greg Gumble and Lesley Visser. The den houses athletic memorabilia from several coaches and players she’s worked with over the years, including UK coaches Adolph Rupp, Joe Hall, Leonard Hamilton, Eddie Sutton, Rick Pitino and John Calipari’s office, as well as the legendary Rick Majerus. An original painting by Nancy Sinatra of the singer and artist’s famous father, Frank, is on display in the entryway and can’t be missed. While Barbara doesn’t have a favorite room in the house, her art collection makes her happiest, reminding her of travels, good friends, and clients.

When seeking an interior designer, Barbara recommends seeing the designer’s work before hiring them.  “Do they design for a living, or is it a hobby? There’s a big difference,” she advises. “I have a full staff: movers, warehouse workers, etc. I am a stocking dealer of furniture and have designed houses all over the country for 49 years.”

With an additional office in Palm Beach, Florida, Barbara has clients throughout the state and works in New York, Dallas, California, and Colorado, as well as a host of NBA cities.

Design and style at its finest.

Most homeowners dread the prospect of a major remodel. But many of the biggest changes we can make to our homes require smaller teams, less time and a lot less stress than huge renovations. Here are some small changes you can make that will have a big impact on your home’s style and function. by Amanda

small

changes, BIG impact!

Studio McGee

Add Dimension

Plain, flat walls can be the visual equivalent of a yawn. There are tons of techniques that can add depth and interest to these blank canvases. Wainscoting, chair rails and wall moldings bring flat walls into the third dimension. Often, these features can be added to a wall – and painted – within a single day.

Installing a deeper chair rail creates the opportunity for a picture rail shelf, allowing you to display artwork and objects without making holes in the wall. That’s a win/win!

Door Swap

For many homeowners, one of the biggest annoyances is a less-thanideal door. Whether you wish your door let in more light, looked a little nicer, opened in a different direction or took up less floorspace, there are many reasons to dream of a different door. It can be hard to justify the cost of this mini-renovation, but it’s one that will quickly pay off in ease of living. Generally, replacing a door with one of the same size takes no more than 2 days – often much less – though major doorway overhauls may take longer.

Some issues with doors can be solved with simple hacks. Doors that stick, refuse to stay shut, welcome in drafts or always hang open often need minor adjustments to get back into perfect working order. A contractor can often tackle the issue within an hour.

Island Living

If a complete kitchen overhaul isn’t in the cards for you, then consider limiting the changes to your island. Making this portion of your kitchen more efficient – and beautiful – can often elevate the whole space while making cooking more enjoyable. Many homeowners focus on making their island more conducive to entertaining and socializing, which typically includes adding seating space and extra counter space.

Laundry List

Is a better laundry room on your home remodel wishlist? Because it’s not a space guests see, many homeowners push this project to another day. But if you re-rank your list based on which home changes will most improve your day-to-day life, wouldn’t a more functional laundry room fall pretty close to the top?

If you’re budget-conscious, start small. Focus on one element of the space that needs improvement, such as a lack of efficient storage. Once that’s addressed, try the space out for a while and see if that’s all it needs; often, small changes in these small spaces make the biggest impact!

Built-In Style

Adding built-ins not only provides extra storage but can also serve as a total facelift for a room. With clever accessorizing, these shelves add boatloads of style to previously neglected spots.

While adding this feature to living rooms is an obvious choice, don’t forget that built-ins can go elsewhere, too! Create closet space by adding built-ins to your bedroom for your most stylish accessories. Add a mini-library to your home office or favorite nook. Give yourself more storage space in the bathroom, kitchen or mudroom.

Sinking Ship

Sinks are another area where homeowners are more apt to grin and bear it. But why? Whether it’s a kitchen sink that kills your lower back or a bathroom sink that doesn’t meet your needs, this can be a relatively quick fix, depending on your needs.

If cost is a factor, consider how you can use a salvaged sink or even reuse the current one in a slightly different configuration. Swapping out the faucet may just be a game-changer!

Looking Up

Adding detail to ceilings is very on-trend right now, and it’s a mini-reno that makes a ton of visual impact. Whether you add beams or moulding, paneling or a coffered look, a statement ceiling often takes little time and can be done relatively inexpensively compared to a more major remodel.

That’s Fire

Is your fireplace in need of a facelift? Depending on your wants, this project could range from very inexpensive to very pricy, so it’s important to consult a professional as soon as possible. Adding a mantel or a coat of paint is very low-cost, whereas refacing – or replacing – brick could become very costly. An expert can make suggestions to bring the project well within your budget while still meeting your style needs.

Curb Appeal

Small changes to the exterior can completely change the vibe of your whole home, inside and out. There are tons of smaller projects you can tackle to add more curb appeal. Some ideas:

• Replace garage door

• Zhush-up landscaping

• Repaint front door and/or shutters

• Add outdoor lighting

• Enclose a porch

• Install window boxes

• Refinish concrete surfaces

• Replace or restyle your mailbox

• Add an arbor

• Replace porch light fixtures

• Reface columns or posts

• Install brick or paver walkways

• Add a roof over your porch or stoop

• Restyle your porch décor

• Replace gutters or downspouts •

Antique Techniques

Tips for Keeping Your Pieces Forever Fabulous

Whenever you’re using a new cleaning method on an antique, it’s wise to do a “spot test” first. Clean a small, inconspicuous area first, and let the piece set for a day or two to ensure that there are no adverse reactions.

Who doesn’t love a wonderful antique piece? Be it grandma’s silver or a stunning mahogany sideboard you found on a lark, antiques add character to any home – and joy to our hearts. But caring for that history takes a careful hand. From fussy materials to intricate, hard-to-clean detailing, cleaning your vintage goods can be a struggle. Fortunately, there are tools and techniques you can employ to ensure all that beauty lasts. by Amanda Harper

Silver

The most important thing you can do for silver is identify it properly: is it silver, or is it silver-plated? While you may think “silver is silver,” the two have very different care needs. You may not believe it, but the best way to care for silver is to use it. Regularly washing it with gentle soap and warm water will prevent the oxidation that causes tarnishing. You can purchase anti-tarnishing bags to store items you won’t use regularly. A silver polishing spray is an easy way to get that shine back if it does tarnish.

Most silver cleaners specifically say not to use on silver-plated items, as they can be too abrasive. Fortunately, there is one cleaning hack that works for both silver and silver-plated items: line an aluminum pot with foil and fill it with hot water and 1 cup of baking soda per gallon. Add the pieces so they aren’t overlapping or touching but are in contact with the aluminum foil; soak for 30 minutes. Polish with a dry cloth.

Wood

Place antique wood pieces on a solid, level surface in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment away from direct sunlight. That’s a picky list of conditions, but it’s essential to ensure the structural and aesthetic integrity of the piece. Generally speaking, it’s better to avoid commercial furniture polishes and cleaners, instead opting for natural oils and paste waxes.

If you notice a problem with the piece, such as chipping, holes, wear in the finish, cracks, splits, or – heaven forbid –pest activity, it may be time to consult a professional. If you notice that a piece doesn’t feel as sturdy at the joints, it may be a sign that the wood there has worn or any wood glue holding it together has degraded… but it’s definitely a sign that it’s time to call a pro!

Brass

There are specific paste cleaners designed for tarnished brass, but one home hack we love? Mix equal parts flour, vinegar and salt into a paste, then apply to the surface; let sit, then rub in gently with a clean cloth before rinsing and drying. (Many folks swear by ketchup, as well!)

Mirrors

If your mirror has black or brown spots beneath the glass, the issue may be the backing metal; they are often backed with silver, which will eventually tarnish in small spots. This “imperfection” is actually highly sought after for its antique charm, so don’t fret! But if the glass itself is hazy, clean it with a mixture of water and vinegar; wipe it away in an S pattern with a microfiber cloth.

Ornate Frames

Dust can easily accumulate in the little nooks and crannies of a beautifully detailed carved, giltwood or gilt plaster frame. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to dust the larger surfaces and a dry, soft-bristled toothbrush to get into smaller crevices. If you notice chipping, cracking or splitting, consider consulting a professional about restoration.

More ornate silver and brass frames may be treated as you would any other silver or brass. However, if you’re unable to remove the glass or artwork without damaging it, you may need to take the frame to an antique restoration specialist.

Stone

A soft, damp cloth in warm water is generally all it takes to clean most smooth stone surfaces. For stubborn spots and stains, there are cleaners designed specifically for stone, but a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap in your water is usually more than enough. Don’t use anything rough or abrasive on these surfaces.

For rough stone, use a soft-bristled brush with lukewarm water, if necessary. Try to avoid using any cleaners with rough or unfinished stone, as the porous surface can sometimes soak them up and discolor.

Small Items

Who doesn’t love a good knick-knack?! While they may be beautiful, caring for them can be a bit of a conundrum. You may not be able to identify the materials used, or it may be made of multiple materials, all with conflicting care needs. When you’re just not sure what to do, the best solution is to clean the item with a dry, clean microfiber cloth. If there is gunk or grime, clean using a slightly damp cloth dipped in warm water mixed with a gentle soap; dry the item immediately to prevent water spots or damage.

Nooks and Crannies

All the intricate carvings and details on antiques are part of their charm – but also part of the cleaning conundrum. A small cleaning brush with very soft bristles is probably your best bet. You can also buy small brush attachments for your vacuum cleaner, which can make dusting a whole lot easier. •

Tip:

Removing the patina of certain antiques can actually devalue them. It’s important to discuss the piece with a knowledgeable appraiser before you go too far with cleaning the piece. If preserving a patina is part of your plan, then always entrust the piece’s care to a restoration expert.

To Refinish or Not to Refinish?

That is the question. If you have a piece that’s just not your style, the impulse to refinish it may be a strong one. But before you pick up the varnish stripper, there’s a lot to consider.

It’s worth talking to an antiques expert first to discuss your options. For valuable pieces, restoring the finish is preferred; refinishing can significantly devalue certain vintage and antique furniture. If it’s not sentimental, you may actually be better off selling this valuable piece and buying something more in line with your style.

But for less valuable and sentimental antiques – or pieces that are beyond all hope of restoring – refinishing can make them more enjoyable and more beautiful.

While a current trend may be calling your name, consider whether you’re setting yourself up for failure. In five years, will you be right back in the same spot, ready to refinish? More classic looks will stand the test of time.

A common furniture flipper technique is to further distress an already distressed piece. If you like the look, that’s fine, but if you’re taking the time to refinish something, why not put in the effort to restore the nicks, holes and dings? A little wood putty goes a long way! Finally, remember that there’s exactly one person you have to satisfy: yourself. Do what makes you happy!

And what better place to do that than Kentucky? “Lexington has a strong sense of community and local pride,” said Kristie, branch manager in Hamburg. “It’s the perfect blend of small-town charm and big-city opportunity.”

As the economy evolves, this team is ready. From promoting cybersecurity awareness to encouraging emergency savings and wise investments, they’re equipping members to face the future with confidence. Kristie offered this advice: “Be prepared for the unexpected, while still working toward long-term goals.”

With trustworthy leaders like Kristie, James, Erin, and Dwight, financial futures for Kentucky families have never looked brighter.

PROACTIVE ADVISORS

At ProActive Advisors, every decision begins with one question: “is this the smartest step forward for our client?” That clarity has earned the Lexington-based firm a reputation for thoughtful, steady financial guidance.

By assessing market health before building portfolios, ProActive helps clients weather downturns while capturing growth. “Our goal is to keep your money compounding,” John York, Account Executive, explained. “That requires managing investment costs to keep them low, investing in the best companies, and combatting market risk.”

ProActive Advisors emphasized the importance of risk management. “Did you lose money in 2000, 2008, 2020 and now? Many investors lose too much because their accounts are invested in fixed percentages of stocks and bonds, ignoring changes in business cycles,” John noted. “Right now, a business cycle change is underway, requiring control of portfolio risks to protect against market loss.”

ProActive believes Lexington is more than home — it’s a place where hard work and relationships matter. And that mindset shapes every conversation they have with their clients. “Being on the frontline in helping clients invest wisely is so rewarding,” John reflected. “Their gratefulness in achieving financial progress is everything.”

“For me, the most rewarding part about working in finance is the opportunity to make a tangible impact on customer lives, by being a guide through major financial decisions, like buying a first home, planning for retirement, or expanding a business,” Acacia Dyer, Forcht Bank AVP and Financial Center Manager, said. “Watching someone achieve a milestone you helped plan for is incredibly satisfying.”

As a fully bilingual professional, Dyer is able to assist many Spanish-speaking individuals, ensuring that language is never a barrier to receiving the guidance and support they deserve.

party patio! on the

Raise your hand if you’re ready for summer! After a long winter and all-too-short spring, we’re practically screaming for sunny days out on the patio. From poolside cocktails to beautifully grilled meals eaten al fresco, we’re dreaming of warm weather enjoyment outside. This month, we’re getting our outdoor spaces ready for a summer’s worth of fun... and you’re invited to the party! by Amanda Harper

curves ahead

Arches, semi-circles and curvy silhouettes are on-trend, both indoors and outdoors. Rounded furniture makes a bold statement while encouraging more cozy hangouts, mimicking the feel of a retro conversation pit.

These pieces look great paired with very angular, geometric pillows and rugs. Too many round accessories could actually be a bit dizzying!

One word of caution? That curved seat cushion poses a challenge should you ever need it reupholstered. Only entrust the job to an experienced upholsterer.

pattern play

Many of today’s relaxed outdoor spaces are embracing the interplay of multiple patterns and textures to create a more playful overall look. Mixing stripes with florals and woven textures will not only give your space a more casual vibe but also a more personalized, lived-in feel.

The key to creating cohesion is to use a limited color palette. Blues, greens, oranges and neutrals are all popular options. Just stick to slight shade variations of the same color and it will look put together!

retro classics

What’s old is new again in outdoor trends. The retro look is very much alive and well on patios in 2025. Scalloped-edge umbrellas and vintage silhouettes are adding a throwback classic elegance to many outdoor living areas.

To get the look, choose pieces that evoke a bygone era and pair it with classic accessories. Don’t worry about mixing periods; the beauty of these modern retro pieces is that they’re intended to blend seamlessly.

If you want to utilize true antique pieces, have at it! Just ensure the piece has been refinished to ensure it will withstand

ciao, bella!

Mediterranean summer was the major trend last year, but those Italian coastal vibes haven’t quite gone out to sea. Instead, they’ve become more refined, with elegant touches that feel truly timeless. This isn’t just a look; it’s a lifestyle!

Look for pottery, old world florals (and snacks), convenient cocktail tables and furniture that practically begs you to lounge in the sun. Rustic, natural fabrics complete the scene.

fun looks, fun times

Our décor sets the tone for celebrations and get-togethers. So why not encourage fun through whimsical pieces that inspire a sense of joy?

An easy way to convey a mood of casual relaxation is by focusing less on perfection and more on enjoyment. Mismatched plates, playful prints, unfussy florals and comfy cushions can help set everyone at ease in your space. Eye-catching light fixtures can also help convey the sense that this area is designated for fun.

And obviously, inviting the dogs to hang out always puts your pet-loving friends at ease!

floaty fun

If you have a pool, it will obviously become the centerpiece of many summer gatherings. If your floaties have seen better days, it may be time to switch things up with some of the latest inflatable and floating offerings. Floating loungers are very popular, as they can be more comfortable than rafts and rings. Likewise, floating slings and hammocks offer a little support and a lot of relaxation. Novelty shapes are on their way out, being replaced by floaties with either a more chic retro aesthetic or a clear look. Floating pool bars and cabanas are the latest must-haves, and your guests will love the touch of luxury. Consider adding inflatable lights, games and speakers to the party.

layered luxury

For many years, outdoor décor was somewhat sparse. Following the maximalism and dopamine décor trends of recent years, more is more once again. Homeowners are piling on pillows, layering plants and tucking in little accessories wherever possible to create a look that is curated and sophisticated.

Basketweave Frog Cachepot, $72 at Syers Browning

Harsh summer conditions can be rough on certain accessories. It’s important to select pieces made from sturdy materials that can withstand direct sun and lots of heat – assuming you’re not willing to take them in and out of the storage shed every night. If you’re not sure, then keep the piece under a porch or other covered structure.

back to nature

Pools and grills not really your thing? Rustic, natural gardens are on-trend. Cottagecore gardens create intimate conversation spaces for you and your guests.

pizza party

In 2025, pizza parties are looking a little different. The availability of portable outdoor pizza ovens has made this the latest “grilling” craze that homeowners just can’t get enough of. Setting out a topping bar and letting guests dress and fire their own personal pizza is a fun way to hang out together – and take some of prep stress off of yourself!

To make these spaces work for you, provide ample seating with lots of cushions and throws. Set out tables for drinks along with tons of candles and lanterns to cast a romantic glow when the sun goes down. Insects may be an issue, so be sure you offer your guests plenty of protection. •

A Mother’s Love

The word “Mom” means something different to everyone. No matter how you choose to celebrate the women who raised you on Mother’s Day, from sharing a special meal to dropping off flowers to doing something in their honor, take some time to acknowledge all the hard work that went into supporting your journey.

The TOPS team wanted to highlight the traditions, advice, and lessons we learned from our moms and share some gifts we are most excited to give and receive for Mother’s Day this year.

Jennifer Baker, Account Executive, started a tradition with her brother in her 20s of taking Mom to brunch on Mother’s Day and confessing something from her childhood that she had absolutely denied doing growing up. She thinks she’s come clean at this point, and her mom still loves her just the same. She was also taught by her mother to never leave the house without mascara on, always remember to decorate in “the rule of three,” and be careful of who you hang around with, because birds of a feather flock together.

Fran Elsen, Editor-in-Chief, celebrates Mother’s Day as the official kick-off of summer activities with her family, and the weekend is a perfect time for planting annuals, finetuning landscaping, and topping it all off with a cookout complete with homemade sides.

Amanda Harper, VP of Production, learned a beauty tip, but considers it life advice: if you have painful cuticles and hangnails – or you’re prone to picking yours – use Neosporin as a cuticle cream. Not only does it moisturize, but it helps heal any wounds and prevents them from becoming infected.

Emma Reilly, Graphic Designer, was always taught by her mom to do what makes her happy, and the rest will follow. It’s why she decided to pursue a creative field and work as a graphic designer today! She also learned to always have something to look forward to, even if it’s something small, to avoid feeling stuck in stressful situations.

Diana Gevedon, Business Manager, was told by her mom to trust her intuition … always listen to that little voice inside.

Gari Lynn Rossi, Account Executive, has a mom who always prioritizes being honest, kind, and considerate, and she’s taken this example to heart!

Keith Yarber, Publisher, learned by his mother’s example to treat everyone equally with dignity and respect, especially those who need it most.

Keni Parks, Photographer, adopted her love of coffee from her mom. She shares many happy memories of seeking out small coffee shops in every little town they visit together, and it is now her favorite way to spend time with people. Her mom also instilled in her to seek the truth and seek honesty within herself and others.

Erin Oliver, Administrative Coordinator, enjoys many activities and traditions with her mom, like Friday pedicures or treating themselves to anything they find with chocolate, but it’s her words of genuine advice, at just the right moment, that mean the most: “You can do hard things.”

Joseph Yarber, Digital Specialist, was taught to always work hard, no matter what you do in life.

Stephanie Gilmore, Photographer, has a mom who hosts the most amazing dinner parties (like Martha Stewart-style), plans fun games for the family to play on Christmas Eve, and cans the best dilly beans all the granddaughters fight over. She is also an amazing seamstress who used to sew the family matching outfits for Christmas, loves to cross stitch, keeps meticulously manicured flower gardens, and can teach you all about astronomy and ornithology.

Vicki Evans, VP of Community Relations, has a mom who insists you should work a normal work week, like 9-5. Then enjoy the rest of your time away from the office doing the things you enjoy. Your career should be just that – your career – and not the main focus of your life.

Samantha Schnelle, TOPS Intern, was encouraged by her mom to always be resilient and strong after seeing her put her kids first to make every day feel as special as could be. She taught her kids that no obstacle is ever too big when it comes to chasing your dreams.

Woody Phillips, Photographer, says his mom was fortunate not to have to work. She was a great example of a stayat-home Mom and housewife. She instilled in him and his older sisters the importance of love and close family values. This has carried over into their adult lives and their families.

how to pay for education

PreK-12

There’s no doubt that the foundation of your child’s education is an important time. You’re setting them up for lifelong success. But private school tuition may not have been in your financial plans. What do you do?

Wealth Management

If you anticipate education expenses of any kind will be a part of your financial future, it’s important to talk to a wealth management advisor right away. They can help you project what those costs will eventually be and save toward – and fund – those expenses, all while helping you balance educational savings with your other financial priorities. They can also think of creative alternatives to help fund your students’ learning if your need is more immediate. Your expert can also demystify the tax implications of education savings and withdrawals.

Tuition Assistance Programs

Many private schools offer financial aid. Each school has different qualifications, but few have income cutoffs for aid, so never assume that your family won’t qualify. It’s important to ask about and apply for tuition assistance as soon as possible; some funds may deplete as time goes on.

Scholarships

There are scholarships available for primary and secondary education. Most are not offered directly through the schools, so you will have to do some creative digging. Few would cover even a significant portion of your child’s tuition, but every bit helps!

Payment Plans

Many schools offer more flexible payment terms than the standard lump-sum. Some of these plans are run by thirdparty vendors, so payment processing fees may apply.

Loans

Most of the conversation surrounding education loans focuses on postsecondary education. While there are no federally subsidized loans for K-12 education, there are some private and commercial lenders that do offer borrowing options.

Traditional student loans are borrowed in the student’s name. That is not the case with these private education loans for K-12 education. Instead, the parents are entirely responsible for repaying these loans, and they incur all of the risk that comes with taking on debt. For that reason, most financial experts caution against this option. If it’s the only option available, be sure you understand the terms.

Postsecondary

Whether you’re looking to further your education or your child is getting ready for what comes after high school, you likely know already that the financial confusion involved is overwhelming. There are so many options that it sometimes feels impossible.

If you feel like you’re in over your head, it’s worth consulting a financial expert. They can walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

FAFSA

For any student enrolling in postsecondary education, the first step should always be filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. This single application throws open the door to a host of funding opportunities. From federal aid grants and loans to work-study opportunities, this one application may be your key to funding your education.

There are some myths surrounding the FAFSA. First, many believe they shouldn’t bother because they won’t qualify. Even if your family has a high household income, it’s still worth applying; the FAFSA can be a requirement even for merit-based scholarships and in-state funding, so not filing would be leaving money on the table.

Many nontraditional and adult students think the FAFSA is only for young learners still living at home with

their parents. In fact, anyone entering postsecondary education should file. Remember that many online learning schools and trade schools also accept the funding that comes via the FAFSA.

When should you apply? The applications open around October 1st each year. You should submit the FAFSA as soon as possible so that you can best understand your financial footing.

Scholarships

As soon as you’re certain that education is part of your plan, you should start looking for scholarships. Why?

There are over 1.7 million scholarships and fellowships awarded annually. But only 0.2% of students receive scholarships worth $25,000 or more; if you know the cost of higher education, you know that’s very few students covering their tuition and fees with a single scholarship.

It’s important to get an understanding of the requirements of potential scholarships as soon as possible. Many are designed for students with particular backgrounds of community involvement or work experience. Looking early gives you a leg-up on how you or your student might steer extracurriculars, volunteerism or summer jobs.

The process of finding scholarships can feel like the proverbial needle in the haystack. Applying for them can be tedious and time-consuming.

According to research ground Search Logistics, a typical high school student meets the qualifications for over 50 scholarships – they just don’t know it. That’s a costly mistake.

Be Selective

While many have a dream school they’d love to attend, the financial reality of choosing one school over the next may be staggering. The average yearly tuition at four-year universities ranges from over $11,000 to $43,000 – but with all fees included, the most expensive college in the US (Pepperdine University) tops out at $93,000/year!

Of course, that’s not the whole financial picture. Always look at the net cost, taking into account the financial package a school offers, as well as other fees, such as room and board. A generous financial aid package may make the “more expensive” school the more affordable option.

We must acknowledge that there is something to say for prestige. If you’re certain that the name of a school will benefit you or your student in the future, that’s worth factoring into your decision. Just remember that nothing is truly “priceless” in the world of finance!

Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) provides parttime jobs to undergraduate, graduate and professional students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to pay education expenses. The exact amount a student earns depends on need and the school’s individual work-study program. You can be paid a paycheck through the school, or you can choose to put that money toward school expenses.

The biggest benefit of the FWS is that many students are able to secure jobs related to their field, allowing them to accrue relevant work experience while they’re still in school. Upon graduation, this is a huge leg-up in the job market. That said, the FWS is not a work-placement program; you often have to apply for the position and treat it just like any other job.

Work Smarter

A 2024 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management reports that around 46% of employers offer tuition assistance of some kind. When you or your student are applying for jobs, its important to look further into what educational benefits the company provides. Many offer tuition reimbursement while others pay the school directly as a scholarship.

Already have existing loans? Some employer student loan repayment programs can help pay off existing student loans faster.

Employers, take note: a Morgan Stanley study reported that 41% of young investors under the age of 34 said that education reimbursement was one of the top benefits an employer could provide that would entice them to a company. Food for thought!

Loans

By the end of 2024, nearly 43 million Americans owed a combined $1.6 TRILLION in federal student loans; add to that an additional $134.3 billion in private student loan debt. That’s millions of American saving less than they should, just to repay loans from their school days.

It’s important to apply for federal student loans first. Federal student loans have certain protections that private loans do not. The terms for these loans are clearer and some debt may be forgiven.

If you aren’t eligible for federal student loans, private loans should be a last resort. It’s important to completely understand all of the terms of any private loans you pursue before signing anything.

Just because you are offered loans does not mean you should take them. It’s important to look at your eventual student loan payments. The total to be repaid monthly shouldn’t exceed 10% of your projected monthly after-tax income your first year out of school; sites like NerdWallet have handy calculators to help you navigate these numbers. Bear in mind that you are not guaranteed a job upon graduation; always err on the side of caution. •

WHAT’S TRENDING IN KIDS’ SPACES IN 2025 || BY AMANDA HARPER

Nurseries

BUH-BYE, BEIGE

Perhaps shamed a bit by the “Sad Beige Baby” parody videos, more parents are once again opting to enhance nursery rooms with color. The pendulum certainly hasn’t yet swung back to the vibrant, quirky hues of the early 2000s, but more parents are seeing their babies’ worlds in color. Think soft blues, calming greens, cozy pinks and desaturated reds.

SUSTAINABLE BABY

More than ever, parents are concerned with eco-friendly furniture, toys, bedding and products for their babies. They’re seeking out organic and natural materials, from wooden furniture and toys to wool rugs. To go with that “green” mindset, they’re utilizing earthy colors for a relaxing space that feels like it was pulled right out of nature.

GROWING WITH THEM

As your baby turns into a toddler and develops into a kid, this room might undergo a lot of growing pains. Many parents are thinking about each furniture purchase in terms of future use. A diaper changing table used to be an unquestioned “must have” for nurseries, but once the last diaper is tossed… then what? Instead of signing up for one more thing to have to drag out to a yard sale or donation pile, parents are opting to be more thoughtful about the longevity of the furniture they select for nurseries.

BUILT-IN BUNKS

For a long time, bunk beds were viewed as a temporary sleeping solution. Gone are the days of rickety, prefab beds that don’t last. More parents – and grandparents – are opting for built-in bunk beds that will stand the test of time. From visiting cousins to bestie slumber parties, there are so many reasons to have extra beds available at a moment’s notice.

Built-in bunks have many benefits. First, it’s an opportunity to create more storage, with drawers nestled beneath the bottom bed and nooks for toys and books built along the verticals. You can choose how guests will climb into the top bunk, whether by a ladder, steps or even a more creative option, like a climbing wall. If you opt for dorm-length twins – or even full mattresses – then the bunks can stay put for years to come. Finally, the look can be more integrated with the style of the room, something prefab solutions just can’t offer.

LOFTY AMBITIONS

Lofts are an awesome opportunity to add a little magic to your little ones’ lives. From a cozy little nook for reading to an indoor “treehouse” playspace, the sky’s the limit for these features. It also makes use of otherwise wasted vertical space, which can become storage when your littles outgrow the loft.

WELCOME BACK, WHIMSY

Kids room trends in recent years were somewhat spare in their detailing, meaning some of the fun and joy of kids’ spaces got lost. Now, more parents are opting for playful, silly details that make rooms truly kid-centric. Think doodle patterns, animalshaped objects, fanciful trims and other fun flair.

Arches and circles are big in home décor this year, and kids’ spaces are not immune. Many furniture pieces for children’s rooms incorporate curves in playful ways, adding both whimsy and a cool factor.

Teens

COLLABS

Brand collabs are just a part of today’s shopping landscape. Your teen probably knows about all of these crossover promotions way before you do. While you can’t commit to every collab that comes along, it can be a fun – and often affordable – way for your teen to explore their sense of style in décor.

SWISS ARMY KNIFE

A teen’s room needs to be able to do it all. From studying to sleepovers, sports equipment storage to silly dance parties, there need to be spaces for just about every activity your teen loves. Smart storage solutions mean even the smallest space can reflect another facet of your amazing kid’s life. More furniture pieces designed for teens embrace this spirit. Engineered to be multifunctional, these pieces will help your teen follow their dreams!

STYLE THAT LASTS

Parents know all too well that the teenage years don’t last forever – even if it sometimes feels like they do. More than ever, parents are styling teen spaces with the future in mind. Whether your kid will go off to college or bring their own little ones to your home, it’s important to think about how the space will change and grow within the next decade.

All Ages PERSONALIZED

In recent years, kids’ spaces were so styleconscious and Instagrammable that they often felt a little bit cookie-cutter. The trend is definitely moving away from replicating perfection, instead embracing a more personalized look that reflects your kid’s personality, not your tastes.

TECH FORWARD

While parents desperately try to limit kids’ screentime, it’s impossible to ignore the potential that technology has for keeping kids safe, entertained and comfortable. Smart rooms make it easy for a parent cradling a sleeping toddler to turn on the lights and close the blinds with just a few words – completely hands-free. Remember that even if your kids aren’t using their tech in their rooms yet, their future tech needs should be a design consideration if you’re remodeling the space.

PRINTS CHARMING

Kids’ spaces have always been a welcome home to wallpaper and fabulous printed fabrics, but many families are taking that classic style even further. From wallpapered ceilings to lovely, layered bedding sets, these rooms are getting the printed treatment. Parents are also experimenting more with these patterns, mixing, mashing and powerclashing them together to create a space that feels completely custom. •

PRESERVING YOUR PUZZLES

Many puzzle designs are as beautiful as artwork and should be displayed as such! But figuring out how to get it off the table creates another puzzle of its own. And before you’re ready to call it quits on a puzzle, how can you store a work-in-progress to free up table space and protect your puzzle from grabby hands and nosy pets?

To Store Unfinished Puzzles:

The easiest way to transport puzzles in progress is to start them on a roll-up puzzle mat. Once you’ve completed enough of the puzzle’s structure to keep it from breaking apart while in the roll, you can stow your puzzle with thin straps for extra security. The only kicker is that you have to start your puzzle on the mat, or else there’s no way to roll it up.

If you’ll be keeping your puzzle at home but still want to preserve table space when you’re not building it, the most secure way to store your puzzle is on a puzzle board. Die-hard puzzlers swear by the (admittedly splurge-worthy) Zacko puzzle board, which comes in a variety of size options, including one that even spins like a lazy Susan.

And to keep your pieces organized throughout the process, especially when space is limited, we recommend using sorting trays. If you sort your pieces on the table and have to pack up your puzzle in the process, you’ll likely have to put your loose pieces back in the box to reorganize next time, which can be frustrating. With stackable (and aesthetically pleasing) sorting trays, you can keep your workstation tidy and save yourself future headaches.

Amy & Delle Puzzle Roll-Up Mat (Amazon, $13)

Zacko Deluxe Hardwood Spinner Puzzle Board (30”x24”) (White Mountain Puzzles, $300)

Tidyboss 8 Puzzle Sorting Trays with Lid (Amazon, $21)

To Display Your Masterpieces:

Before you do anything else to your completed puzzle, make sure it’s secure enough to survive the process. Whether you’ll be sending your puzzle to a service like Framebridge, that frames your puzzle for you, or doing it yourself, treat it with glue or peel-and-stick paper. The adhesive paper should only be applied to the back of the puzzle, or you can glue the pieces together by brushing them with a waterbased, non-toxic, clear drying glue like Mod Podge, which makes a Puzzle Saver glue.

If you opt to frame your puzzle yourself, find a frame that’s slightly larger than the puzzle’s dimensions. If the puzzle sags a bit when the frame is put together, add a bit of cardboard or foam board to the back to tighten it up.

WHEN TO DigitalDetox

EEvery year it seems like there’s a new study linking screentime or social media with another harmful side effect … poor sleep, mental health consequences and increased stress, to name a few. Even still, every year it seems to get harder and harder to realistically step away from our screens, even for a little while. With the postCOVID era of connectivity, it can be hard to maintain a true work/life balance because even when off the clock or on vacation, it can be hard to resist the temptation to answer an email that’s right at your fingertips.

While a complete digital detox may not be in the cards for everyone, the benefits of taking some time away from your screen are immeasurable, and once you break the cycle of scrolling every day, you may break an addiction you didn’t even realize you had! We’re here to help you find your fix in a way that’s feasible to you.

WHAT IS A DIGITAL DETOX?

While some may argue that a true digital detox requires complete abstinence from using or looking at any screens, we argue that in this day and age, a digital detox is what you make it. If you’re able to go cold turkey and cut all the screens out of your life for an extended period of time, more power to you. But for most of us, that just simply is not an option. Whether your job requires you to look at a screen or you need to be available to communicate with your kids digitally, it is more common than ever to require some sort of device just to be a functioning member of society. However, it is possible to identify some ways you could limit your recreational screen time and find alternative activities to spend your hours.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A DIGITAL DETOX?

AKA What’s So Wrong About Screens, Anyway?

Believe it or not, the average adult in the U.S. spends nearly 11 hours each day watching, listening to or reading media – the majority of our waking hours! If that is not reason enough to take a step back and reevaluate how much of your life is really spent behind a screen, there is even more research on the health drawbacks that can come from excessive device use.

Stress

Whether it’s undue stress caused by the devices themselves or the fear of going without them, technology use is a leading cause of stress for about 1/5 of Americans (American Psychological Association) Addiction to screens may go unnoticed and be even more common than we realize.

Sleep

There are many studies that suggest the blue light emitted from screens, especially when used right before going to sleep, affects sleep quality and quantity. Social media use before bed is particularly harmful, increasing anxiety and insomnia and decreasing sleep duration.

Mental Health Concerns

More time spent on phones, especially social media, negatively influences attention and self-esteem. With so much information instantly available at our fingertips, it becomes more difficult to function outside of a screen. And when on social media, we are shown the most curated versions of others without truly understanding what their lives look like behind the scenes. Still, this may lead down a path of questioning your own choices or self-image, which can be harmful.

Work/Life Balance

The feeling of always feeling connected or “on” is all-too-familiar for some. Expectations have changed regarding communication within the workplace. Some companies, especially those with all employees working remotely, are more flexible about working hours and the stereotypical 9-to-5 schedule. Instead, many people can work when they are available and most productive. While this may have its perks, this also means that bosses and clients may expect more constant communication from you outside the typical working hours, which can lead to burnout and a reliance on technology at all hours.

Social Comparison

Again, social media is not a reflection of anyone’s real life, just a curated highlight reel showing off what they would like to share with the public. But when you spend hours a day scrolling through social media, that becomes real life. To combat this feeling, spend some time focusing on human social connections outside of social media. Put your tech to good use by calling someone you’re close with instead of passively liking their posts and moving on.

SIGNS YOU MIGHT NEED A DIGITAL DETOX

• You feel nervous or stressed when you can’t find your phone.

• You feel like you have to check your phone every few minutes.

• You feel depressed or anxious after looking at social media.

• You end up staying up later than intended because you were looking at your phone.

• You have trouble concentrating without checking your phone.

BE REALISTIC

It takes a lot of commitment (and boundaries) to forgo your devices, so it’s important to do it in a way that can work for you and that you’re comfortable sticking with. If your goal is not realistic, it will never stand the test of time and help you change your long-term habits.

If you need your devices to do your job at work, see if you can go without once the workday is over. You could also start small, like cutting out all social media, then slowly weaning off your TV time at the end of the night and picking up a book instead.

SET LIMITS

If you’re struggling to cut your devices out of your life completely, you could opt to limit the amount of time you use them per day, instead. Set boundaries to ensure you prioritize real-world connections and experiences. For example, make a point to have phone-free meals and don’t pick up your phone in the morning until you’ve gotten ready for the day.

REMOVE DISTRACTIONS

Part of the reason why phones are so much of a hindrance on daily life is because of the constant “ping” of push notifications throughout the day. You can’t tell everyone in your contacts not to text you at certain times of day, so the best you can do is block the notifications on your end when they’re not completely essential. Mute your work emails outside of business hours if you are not expecting something pertinent. Set a screen time limit or even a daily limit for certain apps. Then set aside a specific time where you will catch up on the messages you missed so you do not need to worry about them in the moment. •

Keep It Hydrated:

Big hair tends to be dry, so use deep conditioners, hydrating masks and moisturizing products regularly to maintain softness and shine.

Wash Wisely:

Avoid overwashing, as it strips natural oils. Shampoo 1-3 times a week with sulfate-free products.

Detangle with Care:

Protect While You Sleep:

A satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet prevents frizz, breakage and moisture loss overnight.

Beat the Frizz:

Use anti-humidity products like leave-in conditioners and serums to help fight frizz and maintain definition in all weather.

Embrace Your Volume:

Work with your natural texture instead of fighting it; diffusing on low heat or air-drying maintains volume and curl definition. Big hair is meant to be bold and celebrated! 1 2 3 4 5 6

compare & contrast

Contrast makeup theory is nothing new, but if you’re unfamiliar and have suddenly started seeing it popping up all over social media, you might not know how to utilize the theory to its full potential. If you’ve ever had your colors done, you should already know what colors complement your skin tone and hair color. Contrast makeup theory uses the same principle to determine which shades and colors fit best with your complexion. Here’s a cheat sheet to take advantage of this nifty tool.

contrast

High contrast includes those with hair, eyes and eyebrows that have a high contrast with their skin tone. The most common cases are people with dark hair and pale faces, like Anne Hathaway and Lily Collins, but this could apply to people with dark skin and very light hair, as well. In either case, we recommend emphasizing the high contrasting features with a dark smoky eye or strong lip.

celebrity matches: high

SoftSculpt® Bronzer in Light Medium (Makeup by Mario, $32)
Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Satin Shine Lipstick in Night Crimson - Plum Red (Sephora, $35)

medium

Those who are considered medium contrast don’t have a vast contrast between their skin tone and features, but there is some. This includes figures like Zendaya, Emma Watson and Naomi Campbell. The goal is to play up the contrast with saturated or bright lipsticks and blushes.

This level of contrast leaves the most room to raise or lower the tone to balance your features through your lips, cheeks and eyelids. To highlight a specific feature, choose hues in mid-tones or bright colors – avoid super dark or light hues, but feel free to try rich colors or earthy mid-tones.

contrast

wLow contrast faces are those with a certain uniformity between the color of the hair, eyes, eyebrows and skin. Some examples include Amanda Seyfried, Taylor Swift and Viola Davis. In this case, it’s best to look for soft and neutral tones in your makeup, minimizing intense transitions at any specific point. You can also play up certain features with highlighter.

Ladies, it’s 2025, which means we no longer have to compromise style for comfort.

Many follow the Danish philosophy of hygge, which means “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” Think: finding beauty and merit in the ordinary – Sunday afternoons on the couch, cake for breakfast, long phone calls with a loved one – simple, but completely meaningful.

Like many cultural trends, this simple approach to living can be intertwined with what we wear. We’re sharing cozy tips & fits to dress in ways that warm us from the inside out, but still make a statement.

Summer heat is beginning to set in, and soon enough, it will be too hot to even consider wearing long pants. Sure, shorts and a tank top are a quick fix, but sometimes the occasion calls for something a little dressier. That’s where the sundress comes in – it’s lightweight and airy enough for warm days, but stylish and flexible enough to meet the demands of any activity. Now it’s possible to go from a backyard BBQ to an evening walk to an upscale brunch with just one outfit!

The 10 Commandments of Potluck Etiquette

Whether it’s a family reunion or graduation celebration, church picnic or patio party, potlucks are a staple of the season. These fun gatherings are a wonderful way for your community to get together and celebrate with great eats! But like every social situation, there are certain rules that you should stick to. Learn the commandments of potluck etiquette so that you don’t end a topic of unsavory gossip – or worse, disinvited from the next shindig! by Amanda Harper

Thou Shalt

Bring a Dish

If you’re attending a potluck, then yes, you should bring something. Everyone thinks there’s some magical circumstance that exempts them from this commandment, but for most cases, it’s just plain rude. The only acceptable circumstances in which you’re excused from bringing food should also exclude you from attending a potluck at all.

The one and only exception? If the host directly tells you not to bring anything, honor their wishes. In this specific instance, bring them a small host gift as thanks.

Thou Shalt

Communicate

Beforehand

As soon as you receive an invitation to a potluck, it’s good form to reach out to the host and ask what you can bring. If they don’t have any suggestions, then choose something and let them know what you’ll be bringing – and, barring disaster, you should stick to bringing that exact dish.

If you know you are a terrible cook, ask what supplies you can bring. Often, your host would be delighted if you brought store-bought buns and rolls, condiments, ice or disposable utensils; just know that if you commit to one of these non-food essentials, you should communicate if you think you won’t be able to make it for any reason, as the party may be depending on you to provide these items.

Thou Shalt Use the Tongs

Nothing on a buffet line should be touched by anything other than wooden or plastic utensils. If no serving tool was provided, use the cutlery you picked up. At absolute least, use a napkin to grab loose items. Always hold tongs and spoons by the far end and set them down so that the handles can’t make contact with the food.

Remember

Thy Manners

Potlucks are a very informal affair that feels like a family gathering, so it’s easy to forget and let some of your social niceties slip. While nobody’s going to give you any guff for putting your elbows on the table, you should still be mindful of your manners. Arrive on time, don’t skip ahead in the buffet line,

Honor Thy Cooks and Thy Hosts

The tone of the day should be one of effusive praise. Compliment dishes freely and loudly. Thank everyone for participating. Seek out the host and show your appreciation. Everyone put in a lot of effort to make this event happen, so even well-meaning critiques, “pointers” and criticism aren’t welcome. If you can’t say anything nice, then shove another deviled egg in your craw and stay silent.

Thou Shalt Not Expect Leftovers

You should always expect to take home an empty dish. Yes, even if you made sixteen gallons of baked beans, even if you labored over them all night, even if you had to take out a loan to cover the cost of ingredients. Any leftovers are happy surprises, but don’t feel disappointed if they scrape your casserole dish clean.

Thou Shalt

Consider the Needs of Others

1

Perhaps one of the kindest things you can do at a potluck is to bring a dish that takes into account the dietary needs of those who will be attending. Ask your host if they’re aware of any allergies or dietary restrictions among the guests. Even if the host isn’t certain, you can assume there will be at least a few vegetarians and folks with Celiac’s. If you’re up to the task, make a dish that’s free of gluten, animal products and/or common allergens. Be sure to look deeply into what making such a dish requires; often, it’s safest to purchase gluten-free foods from a certified gluten-free producer. That said, if you’re sure that this won’t be a problem, you should always ensure your dish won’t cause problems for anyone: ensure your dish isn’t too spicy, won’t spoil while it sits and doesn’t contain an astronomical amount of sodium or sugar.

Thou Shalt Not

Hog the Spotlight

We all have a dish we’re “famous” for (though perhaps some of us may be more “infamous”), but that doesn’t mean that every potluck is our own personal victory lap. If your host says someone already has Gooey Butter Cake covered, you shouldn’t just bring one, even if you’re sure yours is the best any human being has ever tasted.

Thou Shalt Not

3

Get Seconds (Yet)

It’s bad form to go back for seconds before everyone has eaten. It’s also bad form to heap a lil’ extra helping of something onto your plate during your first trip to the buffet line. If you’re sure something is going to get gobbled up before you can loop back around, just ask whoever made it for the recipe so you can have as much as you want at home. Once you’re sure everyone has been through the line, then we bless a second – or even third – trip.

Thou Shalt Help Out

Whether it’s cleaning up afterwards or carrying plates for those who aren’t able to get their own, the spirit of pitching in at a potluck doesn’t end with the casseroles. Fetch drinks for older guests, help entertain kiddos if parents are still eating, volunteer to pick up ice and generally lend a hand wherever one is needed. Remember: a good deed is its own reward. •

Pimentos

How did peppers from Spain become a cornerstone of Southern cuisine?

Obviously, you know and love pimento spread. But you probably haven’t given much thought to the eponymous red mix-in that makes this Southern staple so magical.

Pimientos or pimentos are heart-shaped peppers. We’re most familiar with the red variety, but they can be yellow, green or maroon, as well. The flavor may be sweet, savory or sour, but most pimentos you’ll encounter are the sweet variety, stuffed into olives or jarred.

These peppers were originally imported from Spain in the 1880s and quickly became a popular canned or jarred commodity – adding it to stuff olives was a novel idea to balance the salty flavor. Around the same time, a soft, moldable cheese was produced in New York that would become known as Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese. These products hit the market as a women-led social movement sought to strategize and quantify all aspects of home life, but especially cooking and recipes; you know this movement as “home economics.”

Recipes combining cream cheese and pimentos were published in turn of the century magazines and cookbooks. Manufacturers caught wind of this trend and began producing premade pimento cheese spreads, almost entirely replacing the process of making your own at home.

So how did something from New England become so associated with the South? Around 1911, Georgia began commercial growing of pimentos on US soil, creating a boom of pimento’s popularity between the 1920s and 1940s. At its peak, 25,000 acres were dedicated to pimento production.

But every boom must bust, and WWII seems to have stopped the “spread” of pimento cheese. With plenty of the crop still growing, Southerners began making their own pimento cheese at home. The Great Depression meant many Southerners stopped relying on what was available at the store and instead turned to fresh or locally-produced ingredients for their meals. So many made their pimento cheese with “hoop cheese,” a semifirm white cheese made from pressing the curds of cottage cheese in a round mold.

By substituting all or some of the base, Southerners made pimento cheese their own. Store-bought cheddar cheese crept in, and mayonnaise was eventually used to bind it. A staple of picnics, funerals and family reunions, pimento cheese was a bit of an afterthought. But the revival of Southern food traditions over the last couple of decades has allowed pimento spread to stand in the spotlight a bit. Now, we can’t imagine a warm weather spread without a bowl of this magical stuff. by Amanda Harper

KITCHEN CULTURE

Cherry Smash!

It’s hard to pinpoint when cherries entered the zeitgeist as a fully-fledged trend, but it’s hard to debate that Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry was a tipping point. The boozy, opulent fragrance spawned a host of “dupes” and fueled the cherry’s popularity, not only in the world of fragrance. Where fashion goes, culture will follow, and cherries are popping up in recipes and boutiques alike. From bag charms to cobbler, cherries the trend that’s here to stay.

Cherries are the perfect kickstart to summer. They come into season in May, just as we’re cleaning off our patios and getting ready to grill. Their red hue lends itself to salads, desserts, drinks, breakfast dishes, sauces and more.

For their small size, cherries are packed with nutrients. They offer fiber, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium. They have antioxidant properties, and may provide support for heart health, muscle recovery and joint health. All that in a truly delicious little package!

Cherry-Chocolate Cobbler

Cherry cobbler is the unofficial dessert of summer cookouts. This recipe uses a wonderful buttermilk biscuit topping that just begs to be dunked in the cherry filling. But the addition of a little chopped chocolate is an unexpected twist that you and your guests will adore.

Filling

3 lbs. cherries, pitted (see notes)

1 c. sugar

2 T cornstarch

2 T lemon juice

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. almond extract

1/8 tsp. kosher salt

Biscuit Topping

2 c. all-purpose flour 1/3 c. sugar

1 T baking powder

1 tsp. kosher salt

1 stick butter, cold and cubed

4 oz. semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

1 large egg

1/2 c. buttermilk

Preheat oven to 375°F. Generously butter a 9x13” baking dish; set aside.

Make the filling: In a large bowl, add filling ingredients and toss until no clumps remain. Spread into prepared dish.

Make the topping: In a food processor, pulse together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt until combined. Add the butter; pulse until pea-sized lumps form. Pulse in chopped chocolate. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk. Pour unto flour mixture and pulse a few times until dough just comes together.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat into a rectangle about 1/2” thick. Cut into twelve 2” squares; arrange over filling. Brush tops with additional buttermilk and, if desired, sprinkle with turbinado sugar.

Bake 45-55 minutes, or until topping is browned and filling is bubbling around the edges; ensure biscuits are not raw in the middle.

Let cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting. Serve with vanilla ice cream topped with shaved chocolate, if desired. (adapted from Food Network)

Notes: If using frozen cherries, thaw them completely, then pat them dry before adding.

2 c. cherries, pitted and halved

1 c. blueberries

1/2 c. English cucumber, cubed

1/2 c. microgreens or torn salad greens

1/2 c. crumbled feta

3 mint leaves, thinly sliced

1/4 c. honey

1 T lemon juice

1 tsp. lemon zest, grated

1/4 tsp. kosher salt

In a large bowl, toss together watermelon, cherries, blueberries, cucumber, salad greens, feta and mint leaves. Set aside.

In a small bowl, whisk together honey, lemon juice, lemon zest and salt. Drizzle 2/3 of dressing over salad, and toss. If needed, add remaining dressing, or provide to guests to add to their own salads. (adapted from Taste of Home)

Lime Rickey Margarita Float

Lime and cherry flavors go together like peanut butter and jelly. This cocktail makes the most of this amazing flavor pairing by creating a margarita, then gives it a little whimsy, to boot!

8 oz. silver tequila

1/2 c. lime juice

1/4 c. agave nectar

1/4 c. maraschino cherry liqueur

15 fresh cherries, pitted

Lime sorbet

Cherry flavored seltzer or club soda

In a blender, add tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, maraschino liqueur and cherries; pulse to coarsely chop the cherries.

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the cherry mixture and shake well.

Strain cocktail into four margarita glasses. Float a scoop of lime sorbet on top. Top glass with a splash of cherry soda. Garnish, if desired, with additional cherries, sprigs of mint or lime wedges. (adapted from Food Network/Bobby Flay)

Sleepy?

Can’t sleep? Cherries may be able to help you get some much-needed shuteye.

Tart cherry juice, made from a type of sour cherries, has been touted as a sleep remedy for decades. The cherries are naturally high in melatonin, a hormone that’s released when it’s dark out to signal to the body that it’s time for bed. Studies into the efficacy of tart cherry juice as a sleep aid have been mixed, but show some promise.

Drinking tart cherry juice alone may not be a cure-all, but there are ways you can boost your sleep potential with a boozefree nightcap. Magnesium glycinate has shown to aid in sleep, as well as helping reduce anxiety and stress levels, improving heart health and relaxing muscles. That said if you have heart, blood or kidney issues or diabetes, this mocktail may not be ideal for you; discuss it with your doctor.

This “sleepy girl mocktail” has been trending for a while, and it remains a favorite way to unwind before bedtime and set yourself up for sleep success.

Tart Cherry Juice

Sleepy Time Mocktail

1/2 c. tart cherry juice (no sugar added)

1 T magnesium glycinate powder Flavored seltzer

Add juice and magnesium powder to a glass and stir until the powder is fully dissolved. Add ice. Top with your favorite flavored seltzer – many enjoy a lemon-lime prebiotic soda, such as Olipop, for this.

Drink at least 1 hour before going to bed, then shut off all electronic devices and gently make your way to bed, avoiding additional stressors that may keep you awake.

A Year for Redemption

Every day that Eva Hudson is at Kentucky, the better she feels about the upcoming volleyball season.

“This group of girls comes in ready to play and wants to get better every day,” the Purdue transfer said. “Every day in practice is going to be a battle. We have someone who goes down, and we have someone to replace them right away. Everyone has really bought into what we want to do.”

Kentucky won its first volleyball national championship in 2020, but coach Craig Skinner has assembled a team with size, experience and depth that makes national championship aspirations a “realistic” goal, according to Hudson.

“The goal will be set every day in practice, and Craig makes sure that we have a national championship effort every day,” Hudson said.

“It's just gonna be so good, just the grit and effort every play is amazing. We absolutely love each other, too. It's like a family. It was so amazing coming in and immediately feeling how loving everyone is and caring for everybody else. That’s what it takes to have a championship team.”

Hudson was a top 25 recruit coming out of high school, and one of the first college coaches to reach out to her was Skinner. However, she decided to stay in her home state and play for Purdue, where she became the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2022 and a three-time all-Big Ten selection.

Hudson led the Big Ten in kills with 4.81 per set last season and admits entering the transfer portal was not easy. However, she wanted a chance to advance further in the NCAA Tournament, and she was thrilled Skinner reached out to her again.

“Once I got in there and started talking to Craig, I knew this was the place I needed to be. As a senior in high school, I was afraid to go as far away from home (Fort Wayne, Ind.). I grew up around the Big Ten. I am super, super close with my family. My mom had gone to Purdue and played volleyball. That was a really big deal for me, but times change,” she said.

Her mother introduced her to volleyball when soccer was her sport of choice at the time.

“I was really into soccer, but I kept growing and she said maybe I should try this volleyball thing,” she said. “Both of my parents coached me at one time, my mom in volleyball and my dad in basketball. We have a very athletic family, and they wanted us to try everything.”

Hudson had double-digit kills in 62 of 64 matches she played at Purdue. The 6’1” Hudson led the Big Ten with 567 kills last season and also had 288 digs for Purdue’s Sweet Sixteen team.

When Skinner reached out to her about transferring to UK, she knew only two players — All-American Brooklyn DeLeye and Lizzie Carr, her roommate at Purdue, who had already transferred to Kentucky.

“We want to go all the way, and we're going to work hard. This team isn't going to go down without a fight, and we're going to be really fun to watch.”
