ENJOY INDOOR WINTER BEAUTY IN JANUARY Christmas and the growing season is finally over, so how about a break from the outside, especially since the weather here in Kentucky was dicy from Thanksgiving on!

Concentrate on the inside, by learning about some easy plants that can make your home healthy AND stylish. Even if you think you kill everything you touch, plantwise, then here are some indoor plants that will give you a sense of accomplishment.

In general, most indoor plants need to be near a window for some daily light, do well in a cooler room away from vents blowing hot air, and need water when the soil is dry. My favorite teacher at UK, Dr. Sharon Bale, would say that if plants die inside, it’s more than likely too much water. They just don’t need that much as they do when outside.

However, the following choices are pretty much foolproof, requiring

little light, water or care. Here are the easiest: ZZ Plant looks like a stegosaurus dinosaur’s back with the ridges, is glossy and dark green, giving life to any room you have. Most plants need some light or water, but these can honestly sit in a windowless room, such as a guest bathroom, for several months at a time without any care at all! In fact, I keep another one near a window, then switch them out every 3 months or so. This is the one that you truly can’t kill!

Poisonous if eaten, but my dogs are smart, and don’t do crazy things like that…

Cast Iron Plant or Aspidistra is what Victorians used for their dark, heavy draped interiors with gas lights, which are toxic to most plants, hence the name “Cast Iron Plant.”

These are taller, similar to a Peace Lily, and make a statement in any room. Water them once a month

and you are good to go!

Dracaena are a group of plants that have many different shapes and colors, unlike the two previous ones that are always the same look. My personal favorites are the LemonLime Dracaena because of the bright, cheerful yellow and bright green striping. I’m writing this article on my desk and there is one right by my side. They are so easy and make a huge show on a dreary, dark day.

Night Blooming Cereus has a wilder habit, with long branches that arch out and look prehistoric. They are like Cacti, needing hardly any water, and if you forget, they’ll be fine.

Good luck, and these might get you hooked on indoor plants, all of which purify the air in your home, just like trees do outside.

Very healthy to have, plus add so much style to the home if placed in good-looking containers.

By Larry Vaught | Photos courtesy UK Athletics Will Stein, the University of Kentucky’s newly minted head football coach, is making his mark as he gets reacquainted with his home state and sets up his coaching staff.

“It’s something that a coach can only dream of, to get his first head coaching job, and to do it at a place like the University of Kentucky, it really is truly a dream,” said Stein.

That might seem strange coming from a Louisville native who played quarterback for the University of Louisville, but Stein did grow up bleeding blue. His father, Matt, was a defensive lineman at Kentucky for coach Jerry Claiborne. The Steins held UK football and basketball season tickets. Matt Stein remembers having Will, then two years old, sitting on his lap at the thenCommonwealth Stadium watching the Cats play (Will Stein still remembers the section and seat numbers).

Matt even took his sons to the Peach Bowl in 1993 and the Outback Bowl in 1998.

“When I got a call from him (Will) that he was coming to Kentucky, we both had tears of joy. It was just an overwhelming moment,” Matt Stein said.

Former Louisville coach Charlie Strong, now the defensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, considers Stein an “elite competitor” who was not afraid of any challenge.

“In my first year as a head coach, we had to win the last game of the season to make a bowl. Our starting quarterback got hurt in the second quarter. I went to talk to Will, and he said, ‘I got it, I got it. You don’t have to tell me.’ He goes in, and he throws a touchdown pass, pounds his chest, and says, ‘I told you I got it.’” Strong said.

Stein was a graduate assistant and quality control coach at Louisville from 2013-14 and then was a quality control coach at Texas in 2015, also under Strong.

“I knew he wanted to coach, and I thought he would be excellent, so I was excited to help him start in the profession. He’s worked extremely hard and taken off from there. I am proud of him, what he has accomplished and what he will continue to accomplish,” Strong said. “I know he will do an outstanding job at the University of Kentucky. They are very fortunate to have Will Stein.”

Stein was nicknamed “Sunshine Stein” by University of Texas at San Antonio coach Jeff Traylor when Stein was on his staff. However, his players will find out life is not always full of sunshine playing for Stein.

“I get to watch our guys play football. It’s an honor to be their coach. It’s not going to be easy. Like, this

off-season, my goal is to make it the hardest off-season we’ve ever had here. The hardest. Has to be if we want to beat the people that we want to beat,” the new coach said. “I’m not just talking about people down the road (Louisville).

I’m talking about the people that Kentucky has beaten. I’m talking about the real people we got to beat. It takes freaking work.”

Stein’s father calls him a workaholic who has the perfect wife to let him be that way.

“He is so driven. He has the right mentality to work 16 to 18 hours a day, seven days a week. He’s okay doing that.

He has the most wonderful wife (Darby), who gets that.

I knew when he first met her and brought her around us, she was perfect to be a coach’s wife. She knows her football and is a great support for William because she understands the demands a coach faces,” Matt Stein said.

Will Stein has always been a “team guy” because he played on his first team at age 4. His parents always thought coaching could be in his future because of his love for competition.

“My dad’s a lawyer. Should I do this when I’m done playing? I got my MBA at Louisville. Should I get into real estate? I’ve been on a team my whole life. I have guys here (at his introductory press conference) that were on my T-ball teams. To not be on a football team or any sort of team was never going to happen,” he said.

“When I got offered the opportunity to be a graduate assistant at Louisville, it was a perfect opportunity, perfect transition. I’ve just been around great men and women that have helped me up to this point. It’s just been a really fun ride.”

And now it should be even more fun watching him coach the team he grew up loving.

TOPS interviewed BBN sports media (writers, reporters, podcasters, radio hosts, you name it) how they respond to the news of Will Stein being named the next Head Coach of UK Football. Hereʼs what they had to say:

“The first thing to excite UK fans about their new football coach is that it could be a destination job for him. Heʼs from Kentucky, his family is still here, so that could keep a successful coach from moving on, but itʼs also an SEC school, and if youʼre in that league, you can make it to the college football playoff. For a rising coach, the first chance to lead a program is so important, and you donʼt make that decision just on family, so if Will Stein is embracing this challenge, thatʼs a good reason for UK fans to be optimistic. I also like that Stein has been associated with a lot of winning – from Trinity High School, through his college playing days, and then through his coaching stops.”

TOM LEACH | THE LEACH REPORT “Kentucky needed something new and exciting, and Steinʼs youth and high-scoring philosophy are drastic changes that the fan base has embraced. Winning with good defenses was fun, but BBN is eager to put points on the board in this new era. Steinʼs track record suggests he knows how to do it. He is widely considered one of the best offensive coordinators in the country. As a new coach, he never coached in the old model, so heʼs not complaining about how things were 5-10 years ago. Kentucky made the young, up-and-comer hire, someone hungry to win in the way college football works now, and that mindset matters. Steinʼs playcalling looks fun, too.”

When Will was first announced as the next UK Football Head Coach, I was okay with the hire, considering it has tons of upsides. The enthusiasm he exudes is infectious, and when he tells you (us) how heʼs going to do it, it all makes sense.”

As a former NFL General Manager once put it, they fall in love with their own playsheets. His challenges will present themselves daily, the same ones Mark Stoops battled: bringing in enough talent to compete in the SEC, which has never been stronger. Factor in the portal and the NIL issue, and itʼs easy to see how Stein and his staff will be pushing the same rock up the same hill that Stoops and his people dealt with for 13 years.”

Thatʼs why I think the hire of Will Stein is such a home run. Stein brings a lot of energy and excitement to the program, which is exactly what it desperately needed. Stein is a Kentuckian. He grew up a UK fan. He used to go to the football games and sit in the stands dreaming of someday being on that UK sideline. Now he has his chance, and I canʼt wait to see where it goes.”

RYAN LEMOND | KSR CO-HOST “He has a passion and a real understanding of the uniqueness of this Kentucky football program. I LOVE his first move, hiring a General Manager! I donʼt know Pat Biondo (the new UK GM), but I believe this position is a ʻmustʼ in todayʼs world of college athletics. Recruiting is still important, but now the transfer portal makes it more like identifying and signing NFL free agents than a long recruiting journey.

This is a process that never stops, and by having a GM as the point person of that effort, Stein can do what he has shown an incredible ability to do.”

Kentuckyʼs offense needed a reset, and Stein assembled the ideal blend of innovative coaches to spark that transformation. Defensively, he targeted coaches known for attacking schemes and fearless recruiting approaches.

Overall, this is an outstanding hire for Kentucky. Stein has deep ties to the Bluegrass State – his father played at UK, while Stein starred at Louisville – giving him a unique understanding of the passion surrounding Kentucky football and its rivalry with the Cardinals. “On paper, the hire of Will Stein is a 10/10, and thatʼs not something Kentucky fans are used to saying without crossing their fingers. This felt less like a replacement and more like a deliberate pivot. Mark Stoops built this program on defense, discipline, and an old-school worldview that served Kentucky well for a long time – but the sport has changed, and UK clearly wanted a coach who speaks the language of the modern game. “Great hire. Points!! Points!! UK needs to score a lot more!! Everywhere Will Stein has been, his team scores a lot of points!! So, Why NOT Kentucky!!! Stein won the press conference, and then the work begins. I like his pitch that UK will be aggressive, thatʼs on offense, defense, and special teams. Thatʼs what Stein has promised, and letʼs see if he can deliver in all 3 phases. Steinʼs biggest challenge is the obvious: being a head coach for the first time. But, as Rich Brooks told me, he became a head coach at the same age. Brooks really likes Stein, and anything Rich says means a lot to me. If Indiana can do it, why not Kentucky!!”

While encompassing every BIG moment from 2025 would be impossible – from major news stories to incredible accomplishments by Lexingtonians – here are 10 moments we think everyone will still be talking about in 2026.

Go Big Blue!

If it’s not already apparent, we think Will Stein being named the new head football coach at UK is kiiiind of a big deal. His appearance has instantly reshaped recruiting and given fans a lot to buzz about. Aside from this arrival, however, there was lots of good news in the Big Blue Nation this year, and we can’t wait to see all the successes that 2026 will bring! The UK Volleyball team finished as the NCAA Runner-UP after a powerhouse season with a 27-game winning streak. Five Wildcats were named on All-SEC Teams, while Track & Field had nine All-SEC selections. UK Basketball –Men’s and Women’s – is always in the news, and we expect this season to be no different. The baseball, rifle, and volleyball teams were named Team of the Year at the annual CATSPY awards for their accomplishments.

s Social Clubs

In 2025, social clubs dominated the society scuttlebutt, and we couldn’t be gladder. The conversation emerging about the need for “third spaces” for adults has inspired local leaders to make Lexington more social. The Melroy, the Camel Club, and The Vine Club each offer unique members-only experiences that we think anyone can appreciate. With sleek amenities and fantastic perks, we think everyone should look into joining!

Come Home Month While 250Lex was a landmark event for our city, we couldn’t very well list every single one of its many, many, many parties, lectures, concerts, and festivals. So we chose to focus on June’s Come Home Month, the centerpiece for this yearlong celebration. Encouraging visitors, former residents, and friends to come experience the best that Lexington has to offer, June was all about hospitality. From SoulFeast to Railboard, Pride to PorchFest, the events were can’t-miss levels of amazing. It also meant that Lexington was named the #1 Place to Travel in June by Travel + Leisure!

Health Care 2025 saw many new and improved health care facilities throughout our region. Lexington Clinic opened its state-of-the-art Orthopedic and Neuroscience Center in May. Baptist Health broke ground on new facilities in the area this year. CHI Saint Joseph Health opened its new Cancer Care Center in February. UK HealthCare saw major expansions and plans for improvements.

Lexington Legends Turn 25 In 2025, the Lexington Legends celebrated their 25th anniversary with a season packed with exciting promotions. They also debuted their Legendary Festival of Lights event, which was a seasonal hit with folks across the Bluegrass!

Gatton Park After years of speculation and planning, Gatton Park on the Town Branch opened in August. This 10-acre park offers a beautiful greenspace in the heart of downtown that provides ample space for mixing and mingling.

From an innovative Adventure Playground for the kiddos to dining, art, reading space, relaxing, and socializing, this park has it all.

Park It! Actually, 2025 was a big year for Lexington’s parks! Kelley’s Landing opened in May, offering Lexington’s first public access to the Kentucky River. Cardinal Run Park North opened in October, offering hiking trails, pickleball, basketball, and more, sprawling 137.6 acres. The reimagined Phoenix Park opened in September, creating a three-story playground in the middle of downtown. A new playground also opened at Masterson Hills Park, and improvements were made to various parks and community centers across the city.

Isabel Yates While there were many notable news stories throughout our community, we wanted to take a moment to remember former vice mayor Isabel Yates, who passed away early this year at age 100. Yates moved to Lexington in 1963 and set about volunteering for a number of local organizations.

She served on the city council from 1991 to 2002. She championed many important projects, including the restoration of both the Kentucky Theatre and McConnell Springs. We were honored to feature her on the cover in January 2022.

Tyler Childers and Wynonna When it was announced that Tyler Childers would be bringing his “On the Road” tour to Kroger Field in April, fans went wild. But with Kentucky special guests Wynonna Judd and S.G. Goodman, it was guaranteed that this would be a can’t-miss ticket. Fans danced in the stands, sang along with down-home hits, and enjoyed an immersive drone show, making this concert one for the books. photo courtesy Wynonna

UK Arts District In December, the University of Kentucky received the largest gift in its history, all to create a new arts district. The $150million gift from The Bill Gatton Foundation will transform the campus with a goal of completion by 2030. This will include the relocation and construction of a new College of Fine Arts Building, the construction of a several-hundred-seat theatre, and the creation of a pavilion and park near South Broadway and Bolivar Street. This will connect the current School of Arts and Visual Studies buildings with the nearby community, creating an arts destination just a short walk from other major city attractions. 2025 was a landmark year in Lexington’s history.

The city celebrated its 250th anniversary in grand fashion with a series of engaging, informative, exciting, and unforgettable events. Each art installation, show, lecture, and community gathering was coordinated to not only share Lexington’s rich history but also look boldly into our future.

Here’s a look back on the incredible events that made 2025 a truly once-in-a-lifetime celebration!

Wildcat Moving: Honoring Lexington’s 250 Years With Service, Strength & Community For 250 years, Lexington has been a city on the move—literally. From the days when horse-drawn wagons hauled household goods down dirt roads, to the modern logistics networks that keep our region growing, moving has always been woven into the fabric of Central Kentucky life. Under this system, established moving companies could legally object to any new mover seeking to operate—no matter how qualified—simply to prevent competition. New businesses could be blocked not by regulators, but by their competitors.

We refused to accept a system that hurt small businesses and limited choice for Kentucky families. So we stood up—not just for ourselves, but for every customer in the Commonwealth.

From 2012 to 2014, Wildcat Moving served as the lead plaintiff in a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of this anti-competitive law. After two years of legal battle, we won. The Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky is a place of hope for families facing Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Our researchers are working to find earlier ways to detect these diseases, better ways to treat them, and real ways to help people hold on to their memories and their independence. Our ultimate goal is to help people not only survive to their golden years, but to enjoy them.

The Center is one of Kentucky’s gems, a true treasure, known world-wide for its bench to bedside research, a top leader in the aging field. One could say it’s right up there with Kentucky horse racing, bourbon, and basketball.

Sanders-Brown is a bench to bedside research center. It is a continuum of science, translating discoveries made in the laboratory into new treatments, diagnostics, and therapies for patients.

At Sanders-Brown, in the lab of Dr. Pete Nelson and in collaboration with others at UK and around the globe, a new form of dementia was discovered, called

limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy, or LATE. LATE dementia mimics the clinical symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, but the molecular characteristics are quite different, involving abnormal accumulations of a protein called TDP-43.

LATE is estimated to affect one third of people age 85 and older.

Guidelines advising doctors how to identify LATE were published this year. Still, there is no specific medical treatment for this type of dementia. That is why Sanders-Brown researchers are conducting the first clinical trial in the world to treat LATE. This trial involves nicorandil, a drug approved in Europe and Asia to treat angina, chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. The hope is that this drug will protect brain tissue and keep the hippocampus (a major memory area in the brain) from shrinking.

The two-year clinical trial, led by Dr. Greg Jicha, will conclude in 2026. We are optimistic.

Just because we age does not mean our skin has to. While collagen does decrease with time, there is still hope in enjoying a youthful appearance. Wrinkles, loss of firmness and elasticity, and a weaker skin barrier start to appear as collagen degrades. Collagen production decreases at a rate of 1% per year starting in the mid- to late twenties. Other factors can accelerate the decline of collagen, such as ultraviolet exposure, smoking, or a poor diet. ewsflash – grays happen to all of us, and the transition to silver has never been more of-the-moment. Celebrities like Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, and even SJP have embraced their natural looks, and if they can do it on the red carpet, so can the rest of us!

However, gray hair isn’t just regular hair that’s turned a different color – it’s different from the inside out. Gray hair is coarser, drier, and more sensitive than pigmented hair, which means you should treat it to extra hydration and heat protection. Lucky for you, there are several steps you can take to make your silver tresses look and feel their best. And if you insist on keeping your color, we have some tricks and inspo for you, too.

Keep it Hydrated If you thought it was important to keep your hair well-fed before, now it’s even more essential.

The texture of your hair changes when it turns gray due to the lack of pigment and proteins that keep keratin in. Essentially, your hair is deflating, and you need to pick up the slack by making sure it’s full of extra hydration to keep it growing and looking sleek. Switch to a richer conditioner, implement weekly hair masks into your routine, and find a good leave-in.

Make it Routine In the same way that many people implement a more vigorous skincare routine as they age, your hair should receive the same treatment. Start by inspecting your current products and doing an overhaul. Most of us stick with the same triedand-true shampoo and conditioner for most of our lives, but gray hair needs a little something new. If your products are too cleansing or stripping, they can actually worsen dry or brittle gray hairs. There are a few key ingredients to look out for that can help this, including antioxidants and peptides.

Stay Away from Sulfates & Silicones There are also a few ingredients to avoid in order for your hair to remain the healthiest it can be.

It turns out the best shampoo for gray hair may not get as sudsy as you’re used to. With gray hair, you should avoid shampoos with sulfates,

which are surfactants, or the agents that cause your shampoo to lather up. For conditioners, experts recommend avoiding silicones and instead considering natural oils, extracts, and alternatives. The majority of silicones will sit on the surface of your hair, weighing it down and making it look and feel oily. Instead, look for sunflower oil, jojoba oil, or shea butter listed in the ingredients.

Treat Your Scalp Our scalps actually get drier with age, not just our hair, and scalp health is hair health! Give your scalp a gentle exfoliation and massage every so often to help with circulation and follicle health. A lightweight hydrating serum also works wonders. Don’t use any extreme, harsh products that will upset the natural microbiome of your scalp and cause abrasion. When attempting a scalp massage, whether that’s with your hands or a dry brush, be careful to avoid excess tugging or pulling, especially with wet hair.

Get a Trim The best hair health tip for any length or color is to get regular trims. For gray hair in particular, trims keep hair looking polished and prevent frizz. You may also need to rethink your styling routine due to the difference in texture. You may need to implement more heat-styling than before, rather than letting it dry and sit naturally.

Brighten it Up Gray hair reflects more UV, which means your scalp burns faster. Make sure to apply extra SPF along your part, and try to wear a hat when in direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Gray hair can also look dull if not properly cared for, as well – that’s where purple shampoo and conditioner come in. They work well to brighten silver and white toned hair to make it look glossy.

Consider Your Health A plethora of people start going gray by age 50, making it completely normal; however, if graying or thinning happens suddenly, it might be time to check in with your doctor as well as your trusted hairstylist. There is most likely no major issue, but graying hair is typically a barometer for other health check-ins related to physical activity, nutrition, stress, sleep, etc.

Keeping Your Color When gray hairs appear, it doesn’t automatically mean you have to stop dyeing it to your preferred color.

Having gray hair as a base can actually give you more options. It’s true, some gray hair can be more difficult and resistant to hair color, but that’s not always the case. Plus, the technology involved in hair coloring is becoming more and more advanced each year.

Whereas old hair color products were heavy and made it obvious that hair was dyed, most products nowadays are oil-based and lighter, which makes them shinier and more natural.

Whatever the color you want to achieve, it’s better to consult with a stylist rather than going wild with DIY products at first. A professional colorist can assess your hair from front to back and determine the best course of action, from color to style to upkeep. You may need extra gloss or moisture treatment to keep the ends from looking brittle or frizzy, and you may need the formula lightened to match your natural color underneath.

If you already have a partially dyed head or want to lengthen the amount of time between touch-ups, we recommend highlights. There are also semi-permanent color options that blend well with gray hair and can keep your salon routine more lowmaintenance. Timing is everything – if you simply don’t have time to return to the salon every 2-4 weeks, that’s okay! Just be willing to come up with a plan that keeps you looking your best for longer without causing hair damage. And if you insist on coloring your hair at home, some advice: don’t make your hairline too dark or heavy.

Even though that’s what you can see most in the mirror, concentrate some energy on the back, as well.

First, it’s important to know the difference between fine lines and wrinkles. Fine lines are shallower, more akin to creases in your skin than anything. They are the precursor to wrinkles, usually only a millimeter or two deep, and they appear as an earlier sign of aging, usually with certain facial expressions or movements. These are commonly referred to as “crow’s feet” or “smile lines.”

Wrinkles, however, are deeper and more pronounced lines that develop as skin loses collagen and elastin (for tips on how to slow the decline of collagen in our skin, read our “Calling All Collagen” article in this issue). They appear even when our faces are at rest and indicate changes to the structural appearance of our skin. One of the most common types of facial wrinkles is in the forehead.

Causes of Wrinkles

As with many skincare concerns, age is a factor in forehead wrinkling, but

There are more “permanent” solutions to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in our faces, but for now, we’ll explore less invasive and cheaper options.

Skincare Strategies

Talk to any dermatologist about how to reduce forehead wrinkles, and they’ll suggest an anti-aging skincare routine. The real trick is knowing

which products to incorporate into your regimen, and which ones are just an added layer with no real benefit. Doctors recommend starting an anti-aging skincare routine in your 20s or 30s, but don’t fret if you’ve already surpassed that – it’s never too late to start putting your routine into practice.

1. Keep it Hydrated

Hydrated skin is happy skin.

Hydration affects the texture and appearance of your skin, helping it become smoother and softer.

But hydrating your skin means more than just drinking water and applying your favorite moisturizer.

While moisturizing helps retain skin’s existing moisture, hydrating actually adds water to your skin.

When adding hydration to your skin, skip drying ingredients like alcohol and peppermint, and instead use water-based products, apply a night cream, and invest in a power-packed serum. A key ingredient to look for is hyaluronic acid, which binds to water and holds it below the skin’s surface, up to 1000x its weight in water.

2. Protect from the Sun

Sun exposure is a major contributor to the youthful appearance of your skin. Continual exposure to UV rays makes your skin drier, spottier, and looser over time. If you were part of the “sun tan oil only” clan, you may think your skin’s fate is hopeless, but alas, there is still some repair you can do.

your dermatologist before trying athome remedies. Some sun spots can cause more than wrinkles!

Every morning, start using a vitamin C serum to boost collagen production in your skin, fight sun damage, brighten your complexion, help fade dark spots, and reduce the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. You should also use a facial sunscreen (at least SPF 30) each day, because even winter sun can cause your skin harm. For extra wrinkle protection, you should also remember to wear sunglasses when it’s sunny, even in the winter, because prolonged squinting can deepen fine lines around your eyes, forehead, and mouth.

3. Use Age-Supportive Items

You should include retinoids and peptides in your skincare routine to combat wrinkles, as well as hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. Retinoids are all vitamin A derivatives, with retinol being a weaker over-the-counter version.

These should be used overnight, because the skin repairs itself overnight, and retinoids can cause mild inflammation that should subside by morning. Similarly, peptides improve cell turnover while you sleep and help smooth the surface of your skin.

Makeup Techniques

You might be surprised to hear that your makeup application may be worsening the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

The wrong complexion products can sink into fine lines, doing everything but smoothing out and brightening your features. Nevertheless, all hope is not lost. With a little skin prep, the right concealer, and a little lift, your wrinkles can be as good as gone to help you make a great impression.

1. Skin Prep

Before applying any products, you have to have a good base. A thick, siliconebased primer will only pill and settle into fine lines, making them more prominent. Instead, find a hydrating primer or lightweight moisturizer to keep your makeup from looking cakey and heavy (plus, this will help add hydration to your skin, even with a full

face of makeup).

2. A Solid Foundation

A light layer of foundation in sheer layers will perform best and prevent discolored splotches.

To apply lightweight foundation, use a slightly damp makeup sponge, pat (stipple) and blend outwards for a dewy finish (you can also use your fingers for more sheer coverage). For best results, avoid rubbing the product in and focus solely on tapping.

3. Concealer Placement

Find hydrating and lightweight formulas with a natural or “radiant” finish. Some buzzwords to avoid are “matte,” “longwearing,” or “camouflage,” as they are typically overly drying for mature skin.

More serum-like formulas are better options for textured skin, and some even include plumping ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalene.

As they work to hydrate the skin, they cover (without settling into) fine lines.

4. Setting, Not Settling

If you choose to use a powder to set your makeup, make sure it’s a micro-fine loose powder, and strategically tap it into your skin instead of sweeping. For a more dewy finish, consider switching to a lightweight setting mist.

5. Strategic Highlighting

A good highlight can help accentuate the right areas of your face, but it can also cause more harm than good if used improperly. You should avoid using highlighter on porous or textured areas, as it only shows off the deep lines you wish to cover up. For contour, you can use a soft-focus, satin finish to blur textured skin and make it appear smooth, not sunken.

6. Quick Fixes

Some extra tidbits for when you need an extra lift are as follows: under-eye patches are great for last-minute, temporary plumping for sunken eyes.

Blurring balms, smoothing sticks, and peptide “instant lift” serums do well to quickly tighten the skin and get rid of fine lines for locations with harsh lighting or photo ops.

Some families are squeamish about talking about their money together. However, keeping each other in the dark can leave your beneficiaries unprepared to take the reins when the time comes. Schedule a meeting between you, your financial advisor, and your heir(s) so that they can ask questions and learn more about the process. Ask them how your heir can better understand your financial situation and learn the ropes now.

Trusts can be an effective way to protect your legacy while ensuring that your wishes are carried out. You can specify the terms of trusts, offering you more control over your wealth. Your financial advisor can help you create a trust that works for you and your beneficiaries.

For your youngest future heirs, the right time for them to start learning about money is now! Lifetime financial literacy starts with allowances, but it doesn’t stop there.

Let them listen in on your financial planning, from grocery budgeting to getting insurance quotes. Children and young adults can benefit a great deal from exposure to the ins and outs of “adulting.”

If you or your spouse just “handles it” when it comes to money, it’s important to find ways to bridge that divide.

Loop each other in on financial decisions day-to-day.

Once a year, have a partnership “summit” to discuss your finances, paperwork, relationship, and upcoming major purchases and expenses. It may sound extreme, but many actually benefit from couples therapy specifically for financial issues. Contrary to the bitter fights you often see on television, this process can really bring the two of you closer than ever and help you get over your biggest anxieties around money and estate planning. That’s a win/win!

Individuals should be talking about their money, too.

Keep your beneficiaries and appointed representatives in the loop of any major changes you make to your estate plan. If your beneficiaries are still young, talk to their guardians about preparing them for their future financial landscape.

Advanced Directives It can also be uncomfortable to talk about “what-if” scenarios, but confronting these hypotheticals can actually offer you and your family peace of mind. A will is a cornerstone of estate planning, but there are other documents to consider filing as well. These include: an advanced healthcare directive, a living will, a healthcare power of attorney, and a financial durable power of attorney. By filing these documents and updating them regularly, your estate may be able to avoid going through the lengthy probate process.

Take special care when choosing the executor of your will, a power of attorney, and a healthcare proxy. You should choose someone who understands your wishes and can be counted on to act in your family’s best interests.

Give Back A meaningful way we can all extend our personal legacies to our greater community is through charitable giving.

Create a culture of gratitude, humility, and empathy in your family by supporting causes that benefit those in need. You will create generations of positive impact by simply being kind and generous. That’s a remarkable legacy to have!

There are many opportunities to build philanthropic giving into your legacy planning. This act often brings comfort to beneficiaries; your family will feel more connected through giving. Of course, there are financial benefits as well. Including charitable gifts in your estate plan can offer significant tax savings for your heirs. Ask your advisor how you can support your family and help support a charity with your estate.

(Not So) Risky Business If you are a business owner, you will need to confront more legacy considerations. It’s essential to identify a succession plan or path to transfer of ownership. Figure out how your business will continue and put it on paper.

But less obvious is setting a culture that will carry on whether or not you’re there to supervise it. Create a mission statement and a set of values that all employees and stakeholders can believe in, ensuring that quality and care remain at the forefront of the business. Make philanthropic goals a part of your overall goal planning to ensure that the business remains committed to the community.

Lead By Example Building a legacy is bigger than your personal business; it’s a whole network of impact you make on those you know and the community around you. Make an impact on the lives you touch by setting a good example of leadership, compassion, and goodwill. Show your family and friends how to build their own legacies of integrity and caring. Living a life that will benefit others is the greatest legacy anyone can leave behind.

Digital Legacy Planning Living in the 21st century brings with it a whole host of problems that our forbearers never could have anticipated. One of those is the immortal presence of our digital footprint.

A “digital legacy” refers to both your social media presence and the digital assets you leave behind. From the thousands of photos on your phone to your Netflix account, our interconnected digital world requires special planning.

Many people are adding digital legacy planning to their wills. Often, people leave specific instructions for the executors of their wills regarding social media accounts, passwords, and other digital concerns.

Passwords It seems like we’re changing our passwords every other day. This can make it difficult for your family to access your accounts if you aren’t able to do so.

If possible, tie your passwords to a password manager or digital keychain. Keep a (secure) running list of your accounts, usernames, passwords, and security questions that someone you trust can access. Update it every time you’re forced to change a password.

Legacy Contacts Many accounts (eg. Facebook, Google) now offer the option to designate a person as your legacy contact, someone who has limited access to your account in the event of an emergency.

Money Matters Many of our digital concerns are also financial concerns.

Many of us have online banking and investment accounts. Be sure that someone you trust has access to these. If possible, use the app to designate beneficiaries.

Remember to include these accounts in your wealth management conversations.

If you have digital assets that generate income, be sure to include these in your legacy planning. This includes websites, social media accounts, and eCommerce sites. If you have invested in digital assets or cryptocurrencies, be sure to let your advisor know.

Creators If you are an artist, writer, or other creator with digital files, it’s essential that you understand the legal landscape surrounding your assets. Understand the transfer of ownership and copyright issues, as well as what will happen to any income your work earns.

Dunn-Edwards: Midnight Garden

Behr was the first major brand to release its 2026 COTY. Artists, creators, and trend-savvy influencers have been calling pigment Pthalo Green the color that’s about to take over, and Behr agreed, offering this gentle take on the bold hue. According to Behr, “a smoky jade with an air of mystery and sophistication, this rich, dynamic color creates spaces that feel both grounded and alive.”

The team at Dunn-Edwards agrees that green is very much still on trend. They describe Midnight Garden as “a deep, muted green with earthy undertones that capture the quiet elegance of nature.” In bright light, it’s a warm-leaning deep sage; in low light, it’s a moody deep green that never feels overwhelming.

The professionals at Behr recommend using Hidden Gem (N430-6A) as an accent in order to create visual depth in spaces where it’s lacking. It’s ideal for color drenching larger areas, as well.

Benjamin Moore: Silhouette Benjamin Moore sought out a neutral that’s anything but bland for its 2026 COTY. “A distinctive color that waves luxurious burnt umber with delicate notes of charcoal,” Silhouette plays on fashion’s major focus on browns.

This beautiful hue toes the line between warm and cool, making it versatile and cool.

The Neutrals

Designers are using Silouette (AF655 ) alongside cream tones for a timeless, chic look. This dramatic neutral works well for entryways, offices, and dining rooms. The trend of off-black for hallways and entryways can get a fashionforward update with this paint!

Dutch Boy: Melodious Ivory Don’t let the name fool you; Dutch Boy’s COTY is anything but a basic neutral. This paint color brings a hint of retro playfulness to spaces. “Melodious Ivory’s creamy warmth brings a nostalgic, elevated vibe, perfect for showcasing handmade pieces and bold layers. A timeless, creamy shade that makes your space feel effortlessly you,” they explain.

Sherwin-Williams: Universal Khaki Sherwin-Williams, on the other hand, isn’t shying away from the basics. More and more homeowners are looking for paints that will stand the test of time, and they’re happy to deliver something classic and appealing. Universal Khaki is “an essential neutral selected for its beautiful balance of livability and longevity.”

The calming, refined aspect of Universal Khaki (SW 6150) makes it ideal for offices, bedrooms, and formal sitting rooms. It works beautifully for large areas and can definitely be used for color drenching.

TOPS Tips: Selecting a Neutral While neutrals are thought of as “safe” paint colors, selecting the right one can sometimes be harder than picking a vivid.

Start by figuring out the direction of your natural lighting. Observe the light and see what you note about it: is it cool, dim, warm, vibrant, or gloomy?

Always test paint on multiple walls using large swatches of the actual paint. Having multiple unsightly blotches of paint isn’t ideal, but seeing the paint on your walls at different times of day will give you a better impression of how it’s going to work out than just looking at paint chips.

Minwax: Special Walnut It’s not just paint companies that have jumped on the COTY bandwagon; Minwax noticed that wood finishes also see color trend shifts year-to-year, and they’re here to share what’s going to be big in 2026.

Simmer Pot Want to make your space smell amazing without using candles, plug-ins, or air fresheners? Simmer pots may just be the perfect solution. This age-old method uses simple kitchen ingredients and a pot of water to freshen up your whole home.

Below are some simmer pot “recipes” you can try. For each, add the ingredients to a medium-large pot. Cover with water, filling your pot about 2/3 full. Bring the water to a boil; reduce heat to low, and let simmer. Do not leave your simmer pot unattended and do not let the pot dry out; ensure the water level never falls below 1/3 full.

Start Your Own Sourdough Winter is the ideal season for baking. Long hours laboring over a loaf of bread can feel meditative and meaningful.

If you’re looking for a cold-weather hobby that will make your whole family happy – and your home smell like magic – look no further!

Getting “Started” In a sterile glass or stainless steel 1-quart container, mix together 1 c. whole wheat flour and 1/2 c. cool water until no dry flour remains. Cover loosely with a clean tea towel.

Let sit at room temperature (about 70°F) for 24 hours. If your home is cool, try setting the starter on top of your refrigerator.

But if by the end of day five, it’s showing good progress, give it one last feeding. After 6 hours or so, you’re ready to bake. With any recipe, ensure that you’re leaving behind the 113 g. of starter needed to feed and keep the starter going. Cover loosely and refrigerate.

Care and Feeding From here, you will repeat the feeding once weekly, discarding all but 113 g., and adding 1 c. unbleached allpurpose flour and 1/2 c. cool water.

Day 2

Waste Not

After 24 hours, discard half. Add 1 c. unbleached allpurpose flour and 1/2 c. room temperature water. Mix completely, cover with tea towel, and let rest at room temperature for 24 hours.

Does discarding all that starter seem wasteful? If you’re ready to bake something, simply use the “discarded” portion in your recipe.

Day 3 You should see signs of “life” in your starter by day three, including bubbling and expansion.

Begin two “feedings” of your starter daily, spaced out as evenly as possible. If you have a kitchen scale, weigh out 113 g. of starter (a generous 1/2 c.) and discard the rest.

Add 1 c. unbleached all-purpose flour and 1/2 c. water to the remaining starter; mix, cover, and let rest at room temperature for about 12 hours before repeating.

Day 5 By the end of day five, your starter should have roughly doubled in size, with a slightly acidic aroma that isn’t

overpowering. If it’s not rising much and now displaying many bubbles, continue the previous twice-daily feeding pattern for two or more days until it looks active.

If you have a friend who enjoys baking, set up your discarded starter for them. Include instructions for feeding it in case they’re interested. If that’s too much commitment for them, they could simply use the whole portion to bake something right away.

Sourdough starter is a needy creature. If you’re going on vacation or you find yourself too busy to maintain it, worry not: there’s no need to start all over! You can dehydrate your starter and rehydrate it when you’re ready to get back in the bread-making game. Keeneland Bread Pudding A trackside must-have, this decadent dessert is a Lexington signature. This obviously makes a lot of bread pudding; we recommend halving the recipe for most households.

8 c. whole milk 2 c. sugar 8 eggs, beaten 12 c. Sister Shubert rolls, cubed 1 c. golden raisins 1 T cinnamon Maker’s Mark Bourbon Sauce 1/2 c. butter, softened 2 c. powdered sugar 1/4 Maker’s Mark Bourbon

In a large bowl, whisk together milk and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla, then mix well. Add in cubed bread; cover and allow to soak overnight.

Preheat oven to 275°F. Spray a 13x9x2” baking pan. Pour the mixture into the pan. Sprinkle cinnamon over the top, then add raisins, pressing raisins in with your fingers.

Bake until firm in the center, about 1.5 hours. Allow to cool for 10 minutes while you prepare the sauce.

Add butter and sugar to a mixing bowl; beat until well-blended. While mixing, gently trickle the bourbon in to create a thick sauce.

Spread the sauce over the warm bread pudding. Serve warm. (adapted from Keeneland)

The Lexingtonian Bluegrass Hospitality Group serves up steaks, pasta, and other delightful dishes, but their most iconic offering may just be a simple salad. The Lexingtonian is the perfect accompaniment to any meal. This recipe is based on one officially released by BHG, but we think their’s will always be better in-house.

Dressing 16 oz. sour cream 2 c. mayonnaise 1/2 c. buttermilk 1 pkg. ranch dressing mix 1/4 tsp. dry mustard

Mix dressing ingredients together; transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate at least 24 hours (up to a week) before serving.

Drizzle a generous amount of dressing over the lettuce mix and toss until evenly coated. Divide lettuce among serving plates and top with a generous amount of chopped tomatoes. Sprinkle each salad with bacon. Serve with extra dressing. (adapted from Beyond the Fence)

Old Fashioned What would a roundup of Lexington recipes be without a cocktail (or two)? While this recipe specifically calls for any Kentucky-made rye, you could easily substitute your favorite bourbon, if you prefer a truly classic sip.

2 oz. Kentucky-made rye 1 sugar cube 3 dashes Angostura bitters 1 orange peel 1 bourbon-soaked cherry

Add the sugar cube and bitters to the bottom of a rocks glass; crush with a muddler until sugar is dissolved. Add rye. Fill glass with ice and stir gently.

Express the oils from the orange peel on top of cocktail, and gently run around the rim; garnish with orange peel. Add cherry and serve.

Bourbon Pecan Pie Is there any recipe more storied than the pie famously named after a horse race? One company owns the trademark to this delicious dish’s name, but that hasn’t stopped chefs or home bakers from concocting their own riffs on this Derbytime tradition. Whether you use pecans or walnuts, everyone will love this classic dessert.

Pie Filling 1/4 c. Maker’s Mark Bourbon 2 eggs 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. light brown sugar 1 stick butter, melted and cooled 1/2 c. flour 1 1/2 c. pecans, toasted and chopped 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Make pie crust.

Add flour, sugar and salt to a food processor; pulse to combine. Add cut pieces of butter and pulse until mixture resembles a coarse meal.

Sprinkle 2 T ice water on top. Pulse until large clumps form; add more water, if needed. Press the dough into a disk, wrap with plastic wrap, and refrigerate 1 hour.

Pie Crust 1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour 1 T sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 8 T cold butter, cubed 3 T ice water, divided

Remove crust from freezer. Line with parchment paper and weigh with pie weights. Bake for 25 minutes, or until edges are dry.

Bourbon Whipped Cream 1 c. heavy whipping cream 2 T sugar 1 1/2 T bourbon

Pour into prepared pie shell. Bake until filling is set and top is golden, about 30 minutes. Cool in pan. Serve warm. (adapted from Maker’s Mark)

Working on a lightly-floured surface, roll the dough out to a 12” round.

Press into a pie dish. Freeze.

Preheat oven to 425°F.

Make filling.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar. Slowly drizzle in butter and bourbon while whisking. Stir in flour until well combined. Fold in pecans and chocolate chips.

Bourbon whipped cream (optional) In a medium bowl, whisk heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually whisk in sugar until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in bourbon. Chill until ready to serve. (adapted from All Recipes)

Stir all ingredients well with ice and strain into an ice-filled glass.

Spoonbread Soufflé Spoonbread is a classic central Kentucky dish. Its moist, custard-like texture is a refreshing alternative to traditional cornbread. This recipe by Lexington chef Ouita Michel adds goat cheese, lemon confit, and toasted hazelnuts for a bold bite you won’t forget.

2 c. whole milk 1/2 c. cornmeal 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 2 T butter 1 T chives, minced 3 egg yolks 5 egg whites 6 oz. fresh goat cheese 1/2 c. toasted hazelnuts, chopped 1/4 c. lemon confit, chopped

Preheat oven to 400°F. Butter a 2 qt. baking dish; set aside.

Lemon Confit 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. water 1 lemon, seeded and thinly sliced

Press goat cheese into rounds. Place on top of the soufflé and bake for 2 additional minutes.

Heat the milk in a double boiler. Whisk in cornmeal and stir until thickened.

Add baking powder, salt, and butter; stir until butter is melted and incorporated. Remove from heat.

In a small bowl, egg yolks together. Mixing constantly, beat egg yolks into the cornmeal mixture; fold in chives.

In a medium bowl, whisk together egg whites until stiff. Gently fold the egg whites into the cornmeal mixture.

Spoon mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake 30-35 minutes, or until puffed and slightly wobbly.

Sprinkle the top with lemon confit and hazelnuts. Serve hot.

Lemon Confit Preheat oven to 200°F. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine water and sugar; simmer until the sugar dissolves completely.

Layer lemons in a shallow baking dish. Pour sugar syrup over the lemons.

Bake until soft, about 2 hours. Allow to cool completely. Transfer to an airtight container and store for up to a week. (adapted from Chef Ouita Michel)

Fried Chicken When locals heard that the Save-A-Lot on Southland Drive would be closing, there was nearly a citywide riot. The deli counter’s fried chicken was perhaps the worst-kept secret gem in the city. Fortunately, when Critchfield Meats moved into the space, they happily carried on the crunchy, crispy tradition. Legend holds that the chicken began with Judy Rankin, who for more than 50 years cooked up fried chicken in some of Lexington’s most storied locales. While the list of spices has changed since Judy’s day, she did share one key tip: brining the chicken overnight in a saltwater bath.

Add 1 T. kosher salt per quart of water used. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

In a large platter, whisk together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In another platter, whisk together buttermilk and hot sauce.

Drain chicken and pat dry with paper towels. Dredge a piece in flour, dip into buttermilk, and dredge again. Repeat with all pieces of chicken. Set aside.

In a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot, add about 3 inches of oil over medium-high heat; heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 350°F. Working in batches, carefully lower the chicken into the oil, ensuring the pot does not become overcrowded. Fry, turning once, until cooked through, about 12 minutes (total cook time of about 30 minutes). Remove to a paper towel to drain. Generously season with salt. (adapted from Food Network) •

God’s Pantry Food Bank Nineteen of the nation’s most foodinsecure counties are located in Kentucky.

That reality is striking, in large part because hunger in our communities isn’t always evident. One organization is working with food pantries and programs across Central and Eastern Kentucky to help ensure our neighbors have access to nutritious food year-round.

“When my food stamps run out, the food pantry provides extra meals, ensuring I have three square meals a day,” said Gary, a God’s Pantry Neighbor. “Situations aren’t always obvious, but God’s Pantry Food Bank understands community needs. The kindness of the people makes visits meaningful.”

Mildred “Mim” Salmon Lunsford Hunt returned to her hometown of Lexington, KY, after serving as a child welfare worker in 1940s New York City, vowing to leave social work behind. She and her husband opened Mim’s, a gift shop, antique gallery, and health food store. But she quickly realized that Lexington had as much need as she had seen in the big city.

Mim began filling her station wagon with food, clothing, bedding, and supplies, distributing help directly to those in need. By 1955, friends and neighbors were bringing donations for “Mim’s Pantry,” located in her basement –

Since its humble beginnings, God’s Pantry Food Bank has grown to serve 50 counties while never losing Mim’s mission of care. They connect an extensive network of more than 500 food pantries and meal programs while working directly to ensure food access for all. In the 2025 fiscal year, they distributed 42,535,222 meals.

While their name may be God’s Pantry Food Bank, they can also help in other ways, offering not only much-needed assistance but also dignity and hope. From SNAP application assistance to fresh produce distribution out in the community, God’s Pantry ensures that nutrient-rich ingredients reach children, individuals, and seniors who need them.

“Food insecurity isn’t about laziness–it’s about life happening. Sometimes you have to choose between bills and groceries or caring for someone and keeping food on the table,” explains Pam. “The pantry helps stretch my budget and gives me peace of mind knowing I can feed my family.”

God’s Pantry has several ways it brings healthy ingredients to communities across its service area. Their Mobile Pantry Program currently distributes dry goods, meat, dairy, and produce directly to people in 15 counties.

The Lexington Mobile Market brings a one-stop grocery store for sale to communities across Fayette County, Monday through Friday; best of all, anyone can shop this convenient option. In the summertime, their Farms to Food Banks Program makes farm-fresh fruits and vegetables available on a first-come, first-served basis with no income verification necessary.

“Fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, and lean meats are expensive–especially in rural areas,” explains Karen. “The pantry makes those essentials accessible and even lets me try new foods I couldn’t afford otherwise. It’s not just helping me–it’s helping the whole community live healthier.”

Children and seniors are especially hit hard by food insecurity. God’s Pantry supports programs to ensure that children have access to food, including on weekends and during school vacations. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program helps improve the health of eligible seniors by providing them with food staples to help fill their pantries.

“When you retire, the checks don’t go far. The Mobile Pantry helps me stretch what I have– sometimes I get enough to freeze and make meals last.” Wilma added, “But it’s not just the food–it’s the kindness and respect that keep me coming back. It feels good.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Bluegrass It’s impossible to imagine the stress and worry that a family experiences when they have a child in the hospital. There are untold decisions and struggles that go unnoticed by others. But the Ronald McDonald’s House Charities® of the Bluegrass sees those families – and helps them heal together.

When families have a sick child, they often need to seek care far from home. This means expensive hotel stays and the continual worry that a room won’t even be available when it’s needed most. It’s another stressor that many families simply don’t need when their top priority is getting their child cared for.

The RMHC® of the Bluegrass is Lexington’s only organization founded to provide a “home-awayfrom-home” for families with children receiving healthcare at area medical facilities. In 2024, they provided 7,655 nights of stay for these families, removing one barrier to healing.

The Ronald McDonald House offers families more than just a room for the night. They also provide home-cooked meals, laundry facilities, play areas for children, specialized suites for immunocompromised children, recreational activities, and more. They also offer transportation to and from local hospitals three times per day, alleviating another burden families face.

It costs around $125 per night, per room to provide these services to the families in need. The Ronald McDonald House encourages – but does not require – families to contribute just $10 a night in order to ensure the House’s doors remain open. However, they never turn a family away because of the inability to contribute. The remaining costs are met through contributions from individuals, groups, and corporations within our community.

RMHC® of the Bluegrass is helping these families in other ways, as well. In 2009, the Ronald McDonald Family Room began welcoming guests inside the Kentucky Children’s Hospital. This space provides a comforting, quiet area for families of children being treated in the hospital’s critical care units. Guests will find comfortable seating, complimentary snacks, portable electronic devices, and other entertainment for little ones.

RMHC® volunteers help spread cheer to patients and families alike.

RMHC® helps spread smiles, too. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile offers free dental services and education in Eastern Kentucky. Since 2005, this program has provided services at 15 elementary schools and 20 Head Start centers, as well as a variety of community events. Each year, over 2,000 children receive preventive dental services they might not have otherwise had access to.

Equestrian Events: January 2026 Take a Tour

Kentucky Horse Park If you and your family are feeling a bout of Cabin Fever coming on, a trip to the Kentucky Horse Park may just be the perfect remedy.

On colder days, spend time indoors with the park’s museums. The International Museum of the Horse is the largest and most comprehensive museum of its kind. Spend 2-3 hours exploring the 64,000 sq.ft. of fascinating exhibits that delve into humankind’s relationship to the horse. Most guests spend an additional 1-2 hours perusing the American Saddlebred Museum, which explores the history of Kentucky’s only native horse breed.

The Kentucky Horse Park offers exciting programming each day it’s open during the winter, both indoors and outdoors. Visit their website for the daily schedule of events, and check social media for any cancellations due to weather. From stall-side chats with equestrian superstars to fun learning opportunities, there’s always something to cure your winter boredom.

your house suddenly feels smaller, louder, and somehow messier than it was yesterday, congratulations – cabin fever has officially moved in. When kids are bouncing off the walls, routines feel stale, and “I’m bored” becomes the soundtrack of the day, even the most organized parents start counting down to bedtime by lunchtime. But before you resort to another movie marathon or handing over a screen out of sheer survival, there is a better way. With a little imagination and a few easy ideas up your sleeve, you can turn stir-crazy days into moments of fun, connection, and even a little magic – no snow boots or sunshine required. by Emma Reilly

Reality Check

As the winter weeks start to blur together, it’s easy to get yourself (and your kids) trapped in their routines. Days aren’t full of joy and excitement, and nights feel longer than ever. Even weekends start to lose their appeal, with sports practices and activities still going strong, but no sunshiney days to look forward to. And not to mention screen fatigue. With sub-zero temps lasting for days, it seems there’s nothing to do but resort to tablet screens and video games. We get it – it’s normal to just feel stuck.

All you need is a little motivation and conversation to turn your winter dynamic around, and you don’t even need to send the kids out to play in the cold.

Reset the Mood

Sometimes, all you need is a quick energy burner to switch the mood around for your kids. There will be days when our perfect plans to get everyone out of the house will fall through, whether it’s because of an incoming snowstorm or a cranky toddler, leaving parents with an empty day and restless kids. On those days, it’s totally okay to just take your quick wins and call the day a success. These 10-15 minute fixes are great to switch up the mood for your littles and give yourself a moment to hit reset.

• Stuffed Animal Hide & Seek: Because some homes just don’t have a lot of hidey holes for kids, try playing hide & seek with a child’s stuffed animal instead.

• Freeze Dance: Start playing some music through your TV or speaker, and have everyone dance as hard as they can. Every once in a while, pause the music and have everyone freeze. Anyone who moves during the freeze period is out.

• Statue Game: One person plays the guard, and the others are museum “statues” that must remain frozen in place as long as the guard can see them. Once they are out of the guard’s sight, they can move into a new pose, but if they are caught moving, they are out.

• Four Corners: Number off the four corners of the

room and stand in the center. Close your eyes and slowly count to 10. While you are counting, the kids will disperse quietly to one of the corners. Then, you will select a corner to be out, and everyone standing in that corner is eliminated. The last player standing becomes the new counter.

• Balloon Lava: Scatter your family members around the room and blow up a balloon. See how long you can work together to keep the balloon from touching the floor. Simple but effective!

• Follow the Leader: Name someone as the leader, and they must guide everyone around the house in silly ways.

Everyone must copy the leader’s movements.

Give it Some Variety

There are plenty of other ways to add some pizzazz to an otherwise boring cooped-up day at home. Make every day a “theme day,” with everyone dressing up as their favorite character, or their favorite PJs, or even plan activities around a theme, like Winter Olympics or Camp Day. You could also involve your kids in the kitchen as helpers, giving them tasks like prepping ingredients or cleaning as you go. There are many kid-friendly recipes for every meal (including dessert!) that can make them excited to help out – and more likely to eat something they otherwise wouldn’t try, since they played a part in making it. A build-your-own pizza or taco bar is a great way to let your kids get involved without risking a complicated recipe getting ruined.

Implementing quiet time into the day can also help curb any arguments and restlessness. Set each child up with an audiobook or have a family read-aloud while the kids rest. They could also build a pillow fort to make rest time more comfy. Start a puzzle together as a family – you don’t even have to finish it in one sitting. Have the kids write letters or build care packages for relatives they haven’t seen in a while, then mail them out.

Tiny Changes = Big Difference

Changes you build into your routine don’t even have to be complex. The smallest change to our routine and environment can activate our brains and make us more present. Try taking a new route home from school pickup, integrating new recipes and restaurants into your week, or rearranging the furniture slightly to make a “new” room. You could even allow your kids to draw up a new layout for their bedroom furniture and rearrange it for them – it will encourage more playtime in their rooms and alleviate boredom. Even in the winter, try to open all the blinds and curtains to let all the light in that you can. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes in your mood.

Materials:

• Coffee filters • Washable markers • Scissors • Small measuring spoon or eyedropper • Water • Transparent tape

• Glass jar • Eyedropper • 3/4 cup baby oil • 1/4 cup water • White paint • Glitter (optional) • Alka-Seltzer tablet

Directions: 1. Give each child a coffee filter and markers and have them use markers to color them. Use multiple colors and don’t worry about making the patterns nice and perfect since the colors will blend, but the more color you add, the more vibrant your final snowflake will be.

2. Use an eyedropper or small measuring spoon to drip some water onto your filters. The whole filter should appear wet but should not be swimming in water, or it will take forever to dry out.

3. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into quarters and drop them one at a time into the jar. Watch your “snow” fizz around the jar in a swirling blizzard!

3. Allow the coffee filters to air dry overnight or dry them in the oven at a very low temperature (120°F for 20-30 mins. should be enough).

4. Fold your coffee filters in half three times to separate it into eighths. Then, take kid-safe scissors and cut a pattern to create your snowflake.

5. Finally, unfold your creation and use transparent tape to fix it to the window! A perfect winter decoration once the holidays have passed.
