Breast Implant Monitoring

MANY PATIENTS ASK ABOUT WHEN THEIR BREAST IMPLANTS SHOULD BE REPLACED. Happily, there is no time-based replacement need. And, this is true regardless of whether the implants are saline filled or silicone gel filled.

However, there are reasons for replacement due both to implant factors and the patient’s body. A leak is the primary implant-related reason for replacement. The implants age as the patient ages. And, let’s face it, nothing lasts forever.

For most types of implants, the leak rate is 0.5-2% per year.

free silicone. Capsular contracture creates firmness and sometimes shape distortion of the breast and is therefore obvious to the patient. However, contracture can occur in the absence of a leak, so it is not a specific indicator of a leak.

THE FDA RELEASED NEW GUIDELINES FOR MONITORING SILICONE IMPLANTS IN LATE 2021.

An ultrasound study is recommended 5-6 years after implant placement. Thereafter, ultrasounds are recommended every 2-3 years. MRI remains the gold standard test to determine silicone implant integrity.

The most common cause of implant leak is fold flaw. Essentially, the implant gets a small fold in it which the patient cannot feel. As the patient moves, the fold creates a weak point in the wall of the implant and eventually the edges rub a hole in themselves.

IF A LEAK IS DIAGNOSED, THE IMPLANT(S) SHOULD BE REPLACED.

A LEAK IS USUALLY OBVIOUS FOR SALINE IMPLANTS.

There is no way to fix a leaking implant other than replacement. Your American Board of Plastic Surgery certified surgeon can help with concerns about breast implants.

Saline inside the implant leaks out and the breast size decreases. Although slow leaks can occur, it is much more common for the implant to deflate over a few hours, days or weeks.

Most silicone implant leaks are “silent” meaning the patient is not aware a leak is occurring. It is important to note that a silent leak is not dangerous to the patient’s health. However, if allowed to persist, problems can develop within the breast including capsular contracture and granuloma formation.

What is a bungalow? The first “bungalow” was built in 1869 in England.

When it came to the United States in the early 1900s, this style was initially used for vacation homes, eventually showing up as homes built in the Arts & Crafts style. Many of Kentucky's bungalows date back to the 1920s.

These small homes are generally designed as “one and a half” stories with a small loft in a sloping roof, often under a dormer. The main living areas are all on the first level, making these homes ideal for smaller families or people with mobility concerns. People who are downsizing often look at bungalows as the perfect compromise for low-worry living.

What sets them apart from a ranch is that half story. A new construction bungalow will often cost more than a traditional ranch. The foundation must be built to support the extra weight and the roof pitch tends to be higher. Bungalows are often built with large verandas, which make these homes so much fun in the summertime.

It has been locally owned for three generations, proudly selling new vehicles at Paul Miller Ford and Paul Miller Mazda, while also offering hundreds of pre-owned vehicles at the Paul Miller Auto Outlet. And, through it all, it has stayed true to its foundational values: active community involvement, unmatched customer service and utmost care for its employees.

FROM MAIN STREET TO ALL STREETS The legacy began nearly seven decades ago when Paul E. Miller, universally known as “Mr. Miller,” purchased a Ford dealership on Lexington’s Main Street, instilling the nascent business as well as its future growth with a hands-

The brand new, state-of-the-art Mazda dealership’s corrugated metal has been replaced with a smooth panel, its drive canopy has been removed and its colors have been carefully modulated, with a heavy use of black, white and natural wood framing.

A large bank of video screens integrates a flicker of activity from the outside, drawing customers to a bold entryway where they are greeted by a concierge. The showrooms are divided into individual studios that help customers appreciate each vehicle, creating a more premium experience. A technology-enabled customer lounge allows for quick access to the showroom, sales division and service write-up areas, while customers are offered entertainment

options, complimentary beverages and snacks, comfortable chairs and access ports for their personal electronics while seamlessly being kept up to date on their wait times.

Consultation stations have been grouped together beyond the gallery showrooms and a visual hierarchy has been brought to life there. The open and airy zone hosts the dealership’s sales managers and consultants. Proximity to the service write up area reinforces the fact that Mazda stands firmly behind its products, bringing the customers back to the same place where they first purchased their lifetime vehicles.

Finally, a merchandise boutique and vehicle accessory area highlights featured parts and accessories, displayed as vignettes in a flexible system that can be placed in multiple configurations, creating a store within a store.

What goes around comes around, and rattan has fully made its way back into our hearts and homes. This year, homeowners are reaching for classic shades like beige, cream, gray, and brown with warm undertones to cover their walls. We’re also seeing natural earth colors such as green and terracotta as a base to create something eye-catching by layering in more vibrant colors.

If you haven’t already noticed, vintage is making a huge comeback in about every category of life, home decor included. Because of supply shortages and homeowners becoming increasingly more sustainable, vintage furniture has become a popular option when decorating the home.

Vintage furniture is not only sustainable, but it allows your personality to shine through in your home. There’s a past with this type of furniture, and many pieces have intricate, personal details that can’t be recreated.

To balance out your neutrals, you’re going to need a little bit of texture… or a lot of texture! Velvet, sherpa, fringe, and boucle are all fabric options that can make a space feel and look luxurious. Maybe we’ve spent too much time at home during the pandemic, but cozy fabrics and materials are a must in every room this year.

It may seem daunting to add texture to your home for fear of overdoing it, but it can be as simple as layering different fabrics on your bed. Clean, plain base fabrics allow you to layer chunky knit throws with tweeds and jacquards or a velvet duvet cover with leather pillows. Once you’ve decided on materials, pile up those pillows and drape a blanket across the foot of your bed to create a comfy, cozy, chic bedroom.

Millennials have been accused of “killing” everything from the diamond industry to fabric softener. But one thing they have resurrected?

Granny’s cast-offs.

Grandmillennial style rose up on social media as a reaction to the ultra-sleek modern and minimalist décor that has so pervaded Instagram feeds the world over. It’s characterized by an appreciation for pieces that have been deemed “outdated” or “too stuffy.”

But don’t think Grandmillennial style completely rejects the fresh and modern. On the contrary, it’s all about working in a few pieces that are on-trend to create a look that is ever-evolving and never stale.

It’s a whimsical approach to design, with layered patterns, bold colors and a sense of humor. Think fringe and ruffles, wallpaper and chinoiserie, trims and drapery. Everything is just a little bit “extra.”

moved to Lexington, KY from the Houston, TX metropolitan area in 2017. Equipped with a background in Construction Process Management as well as Bookkeeping, they took an opportunity to take over the Glass Doctor of Lexington Franchise and dove head first into a new adventure. While entrepreneurship ran in Philip’s family, the glass and glazing industry was new terrain that they didn’t have a lot of experience in– but that didn’t discourage them.

The franchise in Lexington has been around since 2009 and when Philip and Katelyn acquired it in April of 2017, it had been slowly but steadily growing as it serviced all of Fayette and surrounding counties. With the support of the franchise system, Glass Doctor of Lexington has been quickly growing and won a 2021 Top Gun Award recognizing them in the top 10% of all Glass Doctors in the country.

While they didn’t know anyone in Lexington when they moved here, “We set out to make an impact in the lives of our team members and customers by caring no matter how big or small their project is,” Philip stated.

Striving to achieve success the way John Maxwell describes it, their mission is to build, empower and grow a team that is driven to be the best at what they do regardless of who the customer is. Katelyn says, “We are constantly coaching our team so that each day our goal is to provide an excellent service experience and we just happen to install glass while we’re at it.”

Exfoliate

If you weren’t already exfoliating, honey, start today!

Exfoliating allows you to remove dry, dead skin cells from the surface of your skin to reveal the bright, healthy skin underneath. It also aids in increased circulation and stimulates the production of new skin cells, creating a glowing complexion. Make sure not to over-exfoliate, though, because your skin can become irritated. Buffing away dead skin with a gentle scrub two or three times a week is enough to maintain a beautiful, glowing look. Kick off your springtime regimen with a chemical peel, after checking with your dermatologist, which quickly exfoliates, triggers collagen production, and leaves you with a fresh complexion.

Moisturize

If you got into slugging this winter and experienced some seriously hydrated skin, sorry to tell you, but it’s time to put the Vaseline away. Spring means it’s time to switch to a lighter moisturizer that contains humectants and emollients. Humectants reduce moisture loss while emollients trap that moisture in, so you can still protect your skin while using a light moisturizer. year is the Million Dollar Celebration of Dancing with the Lexington Stars. Culminating with this year’s event on Saturday, April 30, 2022, the Rotary Club of Lexington will have raised over $1,000,000 over 11 years for the Lexington Rotary Club Endowment Fund and our main beneficiary, Surgery on Sunday. For the third year, presenting sponsor will be CHI Saint Joseph Health.

The objective of the Lexington Rotary Club Endowment Fund is to encourage and foster community service. It is the body of which the Rotary Club of Lexington conducts many philanthropic activities benefiting disadvantaged persons throughout Fayette County and Central Kentucky.

Dancing with the Lexington Stars started in 2011 when Rotarians Gerald Marvel and Amanda Huddleston, the first co-chairs of the event, scheduled a meeting with Hunter Lisle, the owner of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. They discussed the club hosting a dance event, inspired by the popular ABC television competition. The inaugural launch of Dancing with the Lexington Stars was a smashing success. The instant popularity of the event, the significant contributions of many committee members, and the wonderful work of The Lexington Rotary Club Endowment Fund have all made this annual event a huge success for eleven straight years.

Carrying on with the inaugural leadership set forth by Gerald, Amanda, Hunter and Elesha in 2011, this year’s chairs Kim Johnson, Bret Anderson, Chris Stevenson along with Hunter Lisle and the Arthur Murray Dance Studio and the committee have planned what will be a truly gala event. It takes place at The Kentucky Castle on Versailles Road.

The East Terrace Lounge, adjacent to the ballroom, will have an exciting yet more relaxed vibe. The Lounge will feature a DJ, dance floor, entertainment, and a few surprises. Tickets for the East Terrace Lounge are $125 and include heavy hors d’oeuvres and open bar.

Again this year there will be numerous items to bid on, as well as a live auction with several major items that have been donated.

Christie now works at The Kentucky Castle where she has served as their Chief Operating Officer for the past three years.

Since opening their doors as The Kentucky Castle in 2017, TKC has strived to be a part of the Central Kentucky community. Being a part of functions, such as Dancing with the Lexington Stars, is an integral part of what TKC is and Christie is excited to bring that to life and represent TKC this spring on the dancefloor.

Alex Brown is a Senior Sales Representative for Med-Save Family of Pharmacies and a member of the Rotary Club of Lexington. As a Rotarian Alex stays involved as a member of the Dancing with the Lexington Stars committee. She has a passion for helping others and helps in the community whenever possible. She is an active member of Berea Baptist Church. Alex likes to spend her free time working out, at the lake and with family, friends and her 11 year old daughter.

She received a Bachelors in Fine Arts, with a concentration in jewelry design and metalsmithing from Eastern Kentucky University. She is passionate about her local arts community, and serves the youth specifically by partnering with the local school’s art departments to do field trips and lesson plans. What happens when a Dad, whose signature dance moves are 80s style breakdancing, teams up with his 8th-grade cheerleader daughter? Find out when Bret Anderson and youngest daughter Natalie participate as a duo in the 2022 Dancing with the Lexington Stars competition.

Bret is an 8-year Rotarian and president and founder of Cohesion LLC, a Lexington-based consulting firm.

Through servicing the sales and marketing needs of Cohesion's national roster of business clients, Bret advises forward-thinking corporate leaders on company growth while also benefiting others with his understanding of the cohesive power of personal and professional health and well-being. Veritas Christian Academy student Natalie balances her free time between art, fitness, and hanging out with friends and family, which recently expanded to include Jeff the guinea pig.

The Andersons are no strangers to DWTLS. Bret has been involved in every aspect of the program, from leadership to sponsorship to competition. After initially serving as a committee member, he expanded the program's success during his tenure leading program sponsorships. He also committed Cohesion LLC as an event sponsor. He now co-chairs the annual fundraising and social event.

While competing in the 2019 DWTLS, Bret and wife Carrie were joined by all three of their children to deliver an unprecedented entertainment experience. After that pre-pandemic opportunity to support this great cause while making a family memory of a lifetime, father and daughter are excited to return as a duo with a focus on more traditional ballroom dance (and a few surprises).

Maria is a proud Kentuckian and has a great amount of passion for our Bluegrass state. She was selected as Miss Kentucky USA and later went on to place as a runner up in the 2009 Miss USA telecast owned by Donald Trump and NBC. After Miss USA, she strived to obtain her goal of modeling for a living. She reached that goal upon signing with numerous modeling agencies across the country such as FORD Models, NV Models, and more - who she still works through today. That partnership graciously brought upon opportunities to shoot for campaigns such as Pantene, Oil of Olay, Jockey, Nike, Curel lotion, Remington curling irons, Martini, Kohls, and more.

Maria's career now consists of half modeling and half TV hosting. Locally, Maria hosts a sports show on Sundays called Out of Bounds on Fox 56, and she hosts numerous local commercials such as for Bob Allen Motormall. As a lifelong UK fan, Maria also is thrilled to work as the oncourt entertainment host for the University of Kentucky Men's basketball team. Nationally, she is a digital host for SEC Network's football show - SEC Nation. She has been spotted as a trophy model on stage of the CMAs, and as the lead girl in a Tim McGraw and a Josh Groban music video.

Maria has a heart for making a difference in the youth of today. Therefore, she works as a coach for girls aspiring to improve their interview, public speaking, modeling, and pageantry skills to help them become the best versions of themselves. She also loves to give inspirational speeches to help girls realize their natural potential.

Anthony W. Smallwood of Lexington, KY has worn many hats in his 35 years in Lexington. Many might know his name from his years of being a Hair Designer at McAlpin's or Lerry's Hair Design. Some might remember him from being a country couples and line dance instructor. Others might have been associated with him through one of the many social advocacy organizations and projects he has participated in over the years.

A native of Columbia, Kentucky and graduate of Eastern Kentucky University’s Interior Design program, Caitlin Neal has been involved in the Lexington business and design community for the past 15 years. As Vice President of Sales and member of the Leadership Team at ORI, Caitlin leads ORI’s sales team, and helps guide both the day-to-day and strategize for the future growth of Kentucky’s largest contract furniture dealer. ORI is a 76-year-old company with offices in Lexington, Louisville, Bowling Green, Nashville and Huntsville, and works with Lexington’s leading organizations including University of Kentucky Healthcare, KEMI, Longship, Bluegrass Care Navigators, Lexmark, and many more.

Caitlin is passionate about promoting Lexington business and developing women business leaders, and is active in such organizations as Commerce Lexington, CCIM, and Women Leading Kentucky. Caitlin is wife to Doug Neal and mother to Lafayette High School senior Colin Neal. She is currently following in the footsteps of Lexington Major Linda Gorton and other Lexington business leaders as Lafayette Band Association President for the 22-time KMEA State Champion Lafayette High School Band. AVOL (previously known as AIDS Volunteers of Lexington but changed to AVOL Kentucky since they now serve seventy-two counties in Kentucky) has had a presence in Lexington for over 30 years and is continuing to grow, offering more services and serving more people than ever. Dancing with Steven King Meredith Turk is the Marketing Director & Community Project Coordinator at The Wildcat Group & Wildcat Moving, a mom to two boys, and an involved member of the Lexington community.

Her role with Wildcat Moving allows her to work with nonprofit organizations and bring awareness to important causes to the Lexington community, such as the outreach events she has organized for Earth Day park clean up and donation drives for Kentucky flood and tornado victims. She says getting to work with charities through her job is a dream come true and that she is so proud to be a part of an organization that is a leader in giving back to the community. Meredith is also involved with the American Heart Association, the Greater Lexington Apartment Association, Easter Seals of Cardinal Hill, and LBAR. When she’s not giving back to her community, Meredith spends her time at the soccer field, supporting her sons Powers and Killian. The three years she spent coaching her boys’ soccer team was one of the best times of her life, she says, and yet another way to participate in the community.

Meredith’s hard work throughout Lexington has paid off, as she has been nominated for GLAA’s 2021 Individual Vendor Member of the Year, featured in multiple issues of TOPS Lexington, and has received recognition for her MPA thesis research at one of her alma maters, National University.

Lexington Latinx Culture is Alive and Thrives

Casa de la Cultura’s mission is “to promote Latino culture and encourage the learning and use of the Spanish language through various educational and creative programs and activities.”

In the words of Mercedes Harn, president of the board of Casa de la Cultura, “What we want our community to know is that the Latinx culture is so much more than Cinco de Mayo or tequila and is so much bigger than Mexico. The Latinx community in Kentucky brings and offers so much; we need to be able to recognize their efforts.”

Alongside bringing awareness to Latinx culture within the state, the organization is focused on keeping traditions alive amongst its youth. Founded by Monica Calleja, who currently serves as director, Casa de la Cultura’s mission is “to promote Latino culture and encourage the learning and use of the Spanish language through various educational and creative programs and activities.”

The ultimate goal is that Latinx children now living in Kentucky will know who they are and where they come from. According to Harn, “The younger generation loses their connection with the culture of their immigrant parents once they arrive to the state. This leads to confusion of who they are and how and where they belong. We want these kids to recognize their cultural identity.”

One of the primary ways Casa de la Cultura accomplishes this is through the arts. Harn said, “Latinos have contributed to the arts in lots of forms and media since the beginning of time. Most Latin cultures have been preserved through arts, including dance. We feel dance is especially important because it involves music and, through the choreography, we convey a story.”

The organization teaches dances from Latin America and Mexico, including jarabe tapatío, the mambo from Cuba , sayas from Bolivia, and festejo from Peru as well as choreographies from Estate of Guerrero, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. Classes are available for both children and adults. Throughout the year, members don traditional costumes from their native countries and perform at

events such as Festival Latino de Lexington and WorldFest in Louisville.

Come May, Casa de la Cultura also hosts Festival dia de las Madres. Prior to COVID, 800 families gathered to celebrate Mother’s Day as a community. Harn pointed out, “Mother’s Day is big in Latinx culture. We celebrate family and mothers by giving them gifts and performing a show, and perhaps most important, providing information from other helpful organizations. An informed community is a strong community.

Along with dance, Casa de la Cultura also provides classes in painting, embroidery, and making piñatas and alebrijes.

First created by Mexican artist Pedro Linares, alebrijes are colorful papier mâché sculptures depicting mythical animals; think cat with tentacles, goats with butterfly wings, or dogs with flowers for ears, painted in all the vivid colors of the rainbow. These fantastical creatures can also be made from wood.

One of the highlights of the year for Casa de la Cultura is the Día de los Muertos celebration, which they plan along with Lexington Parks & Recreation. Held on November 1 each year, Día de los Muertos—which translates as “Day of the Dead”—is a celebration dedicated to life, death, remembering loved ones, and honoring ancestors. The festival is rich with rituals, symbolism, and art, and it is free to the public. A central part of the celebration is the community ofrenda, an alter decorated as a sign of remembrance where family and friends can place gifts of appreciation for the deceased.

Of course, food plays a large role in every culture. So, this April, Casa de la Cultura, in partnership with Crave, will bring back Taco Week, where local restaurants offer up their most unique and mouth-watering takes on this traditional dish. •

As Rudy’s children grew, the father of two realized he and his family needed to be closer to the city. He sold his cattle and to continue following his passion, opened a butcher shop.

Rudy says what makes his shop special is the unique, personable details and the people that make up the business. VanMeter James is actually named after Leake’s two children, while the company’s logo is written in his own handwriting. The men who work for Leake have experienced the patience and the want for quality products it takes to learn more about the beef industry, and according to Leake, each has done an incredible job even when coming from various backgrounds.

Along with those he works with in the shop, Rudy attributes much of the shop’s success to he and his wife’s hard work.

He says their both their personal and professional growth together over the past eight years has allowed him to be in the position he is today.

Leake says as time goes on he plans to expand upon the cuts he offers at VanMeter James, but wanted to start with basics you typically see on steakhouse menus. Another

factor making this butcher shop unique is the aging process of the meat. All of their steaks are wet aged for 28 days and hand cut to specific thickness.

A SIGN OF THE TIMES Thorough Graphics prepares to celebrate 40 years as a locally owned business.

by Kate Savage | photos courtesy Thorough Graphics “Being in the right place at the right time and going with a good thing when you’ve got it going” has had a lot to do with the business success story of Thorough Graphics and husband and wife owners, John and Ann Cox. John worked his way through college at a local Lexington sign company. In 1982, with that experience and his BA from the UK College of Fine Arts under his belt, he struck out on his own and started Thorough Graphics at the age of 23. He married Ann a year later and – after meeting with a marriage counselor to discuss the pros and cons of working together – they became business partners as well.

“We still absolutely make decisions together. It wouldn’t work if we didn’t,” said John. “Compromise is the key.”

in college specialized in signage for the horse industry.

This became his ongoing focus with Thorough Graphics and provided a unique market niche that has since allowed him to cater to a local industry with a built-in constant and recurring demand.

John’s mother and brother worked for Blood-Horse Magazine, so they were connected to the thoroughbred industry. But it was a phone call from the editor of BloodHorse while John and Ann were on honeymoon that was to decide their business direction moving forward. This pivotal call resulted in an order to make plaques for every horse, jockey and trainer ever inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs; to this day, this is a standing order they continue to fulfill – over 900 plaques later.

The majority of their work is with the thoroughbred horse sales that take place here at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland, but also with those in Saratoga, Baltimore, Ocala and Miami. “The main stuff for the horse sales involves pedigree signs that go on the stall doors of every horse sold at public auction. We make about 10,000 of these every year,” said John.

Thorough Graphics is able to make just about any kind of sign but they have chosen not to get involved in any that are electrical. The team makes individual letters, bronze plaques, directional signs, main entry identification, vehicle lettering and more. However, working with the thoroughbred industry is what they prefer and “when horse sales are going on – July-January – we have to turn down everything else except for the horse stuff,” said John.

With his degree in Studio Art, John serves as the designer, which is his favorite part of the sign business. “With all the technology today, it seems anyone can buy a machine that cuts letters, and voila, you’re in the sign business,” said John. “But technology only goes so far. You can make a perfectly ‘bad’ sign that has perfect lettering, but without the design, it’s still just a bad sign,” he emphasized. His own work has been recognized with numerous awards, including first place in a national sign design competition sponsored by Signs of the Times Magazine.

When he started out in 1982, John used to hand-paint everything. Today’s technology means there’s no longer

really any need to use a brush, although John readily admits some things still need to be painted by hand, such as jockey lawn statues. With digital plotters and printers, a computerized router, fairly sophisticated software and a full wood workshop, the actual work of sign fabrication has been revolutionized. But, as with any small business, there are many other hats to be worn, and so in addition to working as the designer and painter, John reckons he’s now an adept salesman, carpenter, installer, bookkeeper, and receptionist. He gets some relief from the accounting responsibilities as this is his wife Ann’s role as Vice President of the company.

When time allows, John and Ann love to travel, and Sanibel Island is one of their favorite place to visit. In spite of being in the business of making new signs – or maybe because of – they have developed a love for vintage signs and over the years have collected more than 100 antique signs that they have at their shop on Sandersville Road.

After a healthy, long career in the sign business, John thinks he’s still got another 7-8 good years in him. “We like what we do and enjoy the horse people we deal with on a daily basis,” he explained. So now, with a big 40-year milestone fast approaching this May, they plan to celebrate with an open house to thank all the customers who have supported them over these past years… and to let them know they aren’t ready to retire from the race just yet. •

about what Kentucky football has lost since it beat Iowa in the Citrus Bowl to complete a second 10-win season in a four-year span: • Offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who revamped the UK offense into a pro-style attack, left after one season to become offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

• Offensive line coach Eric Wolford left after one season to join the Alabama staff.

• Inside linebackers coach Jon Sumrall, one of UK's best recruiters, got the head job at Troy State.

• Receiver Wan'Dale Robinson left early for the NFL after one record-setting season following his transfer from Nebraska.

• Three starting offensive linemen — Darian Kinnard, Dare Rosenthal and Luke Fortner — are all likely NFL draft choices.

• Three defensive players — Josh Paschal, Yussuf Corker and Marquan McCall — were all invited to the NFL Combine.

Yet Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has been almost giddy as he thinks ahead to the season opener September 3rd against Miami.

"Our players are as excited today as they were a year ago," Stoops said before spring practice started. "We have a culture here where guys work hard and want to win. That is not changing."

Stoops went back to the NFL to help fill his coaching staff. He got San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello to be UK's new offensive coordinator and 49ers assistant offensive line coach Zach Yenser to become the new line coach.

"There are some really good players coming back here," Scangarello said. "Coach Stoops has done a great job recruiting the right type of people. I think the pieces are

here that we need. There has been a foundation laid that has set the right trend for where we are headed."

Those "good players" start with quarterback Will Levis and running back Chris Rodriguez. Levis threw for 2,826 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 376 yards and nine more scores. Rodriguez ran for 1,379 yards and three touchdowns last season and has averaged over 6.5 yards per carry overall during the last three seasons.

Yenser, a Kentucky native, said he was "intrigued" about joining Stoops' staff.

"Seeing his vision and plan for the future here really fired me up. It was a no-brainer to take the job," Yenser said.

"It's a great opportunity to be part of what is going on here.

We have guys used to winning who want to keep winning.

"Coach Stoops is dedicated to the same physical play that we believed in at the 49ers. We are going to try and be the most physical offensive line on the field every game. That's the mentality we are going to keep having."

Kentucky is also adding its highest-rated recruiting class that features the speed at receiver the Cats need to offset the loss of Robinson and potential depth at a lot of other positions.

The Cats also got a huge boost when three linebackers — DeAndre Square, Jacquez Jones and Jordan Wright — all decided to return for a "super" senior season. Once again, Kentucky also did well in the transfer portal to potentially help fill voids in the offensive and defensive lines along with receivers.

"The standard here now is to win ten or more games every year, and with the roster we have, I think we can do that," Levis said. "We have high expectations and standards for ourselves. Even though you might make a mistake, mistakes aren't acceptable. You can't beat yourself up, but you have to learn. I think as long as we trust the coaches, we can build on what we did last year and have an even better season." •

RECIPES:

PESTO SHRIMP AND ART ICHOKE LINGUINE 1 package linguine 4 cups half-and-half 2 cups grated Parmesan 2 jars marinated quartered artichoke hearts, drained 1 cup pesto 1 tsp. pepper 2 lbs. uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain.

In a large saucepan, heat half-and-half to simmering. Stir in cheese, artichoke hearts, pesto and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring until thickened (about 7 minutes).

Add shrimp, cooking until pink (about 7 minutes).

GREEK PORK CHOPS W IT H VEGGIES

4 1-inch thick frenched pork loin chops 1/2 cup lemon juice 4 T olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 3 T chopped oregano 1 tsp. black pepper 2 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 2 medium yellow squash 1 large zucchini 1/2 lb. small red potatoes

Whisk together lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, oregano, pepper and salt. Reserve 2 teaspoons of the marinade, then pour the rest over the chops in a baking dish. Chill 1 hour up to overnight.

Prep your veggies: slice zucchini and squash to 1/2” thickness.

Quarter the red potatoes. Set aside.

Preheat oven to 425F. Toss veggies with the reserved marinade. Spread in an even layer on a sheet pan.

Remove pork from marinade and pat dry with paper towels. Add to sheet pan. Bake for 25 minutes.

Set oven to broil. Cook until meat registers 140F on a meat thermometer (checked at the thickest part), about 5 minutes. Remove pork from the pan (wrap with foil to keep warm).

Wondering how to cook asparagus? you want brilliant green stalks with no added fats, blanch your asparagus.

The easiest method? Preheat oven to 400F. Trim off woody bottom stem of stalks and peel lightly, if desired.

Toss with a tablespoon of olive oil (per bunch). Optionally add in salt, pepper, crushed garlic or lemon zest. Roast 10-15 minutes.

Makes a great plate partner with chicken, salads or a nice cut of beef from a local butcher, such as VanMeter James!

LAST BIT E: Asparagus Season!

Is there anything better than asparagus season?!

Okay, maybe puppy snuggles and first kisses are better, but the first sighting of fresh asparagus in the grocery store does give us butterflies. These little stalks of green goodness are a herald of ligher, brighter spring cuisine.

While you can technically find asparagus year-round, its peak season is April and May. Asparagus can be cooked any number of ways; you can grill, steam, deep fry, roast, air fry, sauté it or even enjoy it raw. Enjoy asparagus as a simple side, a mix-in in your salad, a tasty soup, the backbone of a delicious omelet or a delicious appetizer (wrapped in prosciutto, natch.)

When most people think of asparagus, the green varieties are what come to mind. As you might expect, it has a grassy, sweet taste that can have bitter notes. Those bitter notes can become more pronounced with certain cooking methods. People are divided on whether to peel green

asparagus; if the tough outer texture bothers you, use a vegetable peeler to remove the woody outermost layer of the stalk.

White asparagus is actually grown in the dark. This prevents the development of chlorophyll. White asparagus tastes very similar to green, though many feel that it is slightly sweeter and more tender. The deliberate growing process means it’s more rare and often more expensive. To get the most of the more delicate texture of this variety, be sure to peel it.

Purple asparagus has a higher sugar content, making it sweeter. It is also less fibrous. The purple coloring comes from anthocyanin, an antioxidant. This coloring only runs through the skin, so don’t peel this variety. The color makes it an interesting addition to any plate, though cooking can dull the purple hue; cook it over high, brief heat – if you cook it at all.
