Let’s start out with a little bit of a confession, I watch the Real Housewives of everywhere, I have since the series debuted over a decade ago and I am often dumfounded by their closets. Lately, the closets are out of control with built in bookcases of Chanel, Hermes, and Celine bags just to name a few. It’s like going to Rodeo Drive every time you need to grab a pair of yoga pants. While watching a recent episode of the RHOD (Dallas, my previous home city) I saw socialite D’Andra Simmons closet which contained a sunglass display. I had no idea that people collected sunglasses and coordinated them to their outfits. I have 3 pair of sunglasses, granted they are very nice but they serve a functional purpose in both of my cars and a pair for my pool. I invest in classic shaped, designer sunglasses that never go out of style, I am not trendy enough to ever match my outfit to my sunglasses rather I match them to me. I always wear over-sized, Jacki O looking tortoise shell with amber lenses. They compliment my hair and skin tone the best and I never stray from my trusty sidekicks. For those of you struggling with what pair suit your face the best, here is a handy little guide to help y’all out and some of my favorite picks for this summer. For the past several years, I only wear Burberry. They have an HD lens that entirely changes what you see. They are also wonderful for those grey, overcast days that tend to give me headaches. It’s also great for sensitive skin because it exfoliates and hydrates simultaneously... not to mention can also offer a beautiful glow. However, if you have eczema-prone skin, it’s safe to stay away from lactic acid as it’s exfoliating features could potentially irritate the affected areas.

But like many beauty buzzwords, you might be confused about what they’re even talking about, and whether it’s something that might be a good fit for you. Your skin’s microbiome is the natural ecosystem of bacteria, viruses, fungi and more on your skin. While those words raise red flags in our minds, most of these are actually beneficial; they can help protect you against invading pathogens, for instance. There are many ways your skin’s microbiome helps you, including protecting against pathogens and training your immune system. You may be thinking that the whole reason we wash our bodies is to get rid of bacteria, viruses and fungi, right? Many soaps remove bacteria – regardless of whether it’s beneficial or harmful. Cleansing can also dry out skin, which damages the layer where your microbiome thrives. What happens when your microbiome is destroyed
or thrown out of whack? It can lead to hypersensitive skin, inflammation or even slower healing wounds in some cases. While it’s not fully understood how the microbiome affects us – or what health consequences there may be for those with one that’s been sapped by cleansing – we do know that the overall appearance of skin tends to suffer. So how do you protect your skin’s microbiome? • • • •

Biotin. We hear it referenced in countless health and beauty articles while being touted by physicians everywhere as a crucial nutrient necessary to our diet. It’s touted as a miracle for hair and nails. But what exactly is it, anyway? The word “biotin” comes from the ancient Greek word “biotos,” which means “life” or “sustenance.” B vitamins, such as biotin, help keep our skin, hair, eyes, liver, and nervous system healthy. Most of us get our biotin from eating a healthy diet, but there are many claims that getting more (via supplements) can regulate blood sugar and promote hair growth. Biotin is found in B-complex supplements or supplements labeled “Energy Complex” or “Adrenal Support.” These supplements contain the whole gamut of B vitamins, including B riboflavin, vitamin B3 niacin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. These “B” vitamins work synergistically to stimulate brain function, nerve activity, and metabolism stimulation. To ensure that you’re getting a sufficient amount of biotin and maximizing its benefits, the recommended daily dosage for adults is 30 mcg, according to healthcare professionals. Biotin deficiency is fairly rare. However, some people – such as pregnant women and people who drink high amounts of alcohol – may develop mild deficiencies. Interestingly, eating raw eggs on a regular basis can cause biotin deficiency. This is because raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin that binds to biotin, preventing the body from absorbing it. (I don’t think there are many raw egg white consumers out there, though!) Cooking the eggs deactivates their avidin, so most of you won’t need to worry. Many commercial companies include biotin in their beauty products, so we will often see shampoos and makeup containing biotin. And it has been extremely effective for some. Getting enough of this “wonder” supplement also works as a preventative measure, protecting skin from such conditions as fungal infections and acne. Biotin is something we all need in order to maintain proper nerve and digestive health. And, a little bit of “beauty” health is always a good thing, too!

But collagen is more than just a lip or fine line filler injectable. Collagen is actually one of the most abundant proteins in your body. It provides structure to your skin, connective tissue, teeth, muscles, organs and joints, among other things. As we age, our body produces lower quality collagen, and less of it. This manifests as less supple, less firm skin and weaker cartilage in joints.
