E NEED YOU up front

I don’t think I need to tell you that it is tough for retailers and designers in Australia, you hear about it on the news every day. The great news is the solution lies with you. Top3 have been providing authentic and innovative product from Australia and around the globe to fellow Australian design lovers for 17 years.

So we would like you to think about what kind of tomorrow you want for retail in Australia. If you do want to shop overseas – then please go right ahead, but don’t be disappointed when your favourite local store is gone. We are not asking you to pay more to do that either. Our team leaves no stone unturned to deliver brands right to your door, at the world’s sharpest prices. If you can land any of our original design products here in Australia for a better price, we will match it. That is how confident we are that Australian retailers are not ripping anyone off. So if you love design, consider buying local, supporting the young designers we employ, supporting their studies, the local economy and the environment. We aim to keep all of our items in stock, however, from time to time popular items do sell out, but rest assured that they are on their way! Things might take a bit longer to get here on a ship, but I think you (and the planet) will agree that it is worth the wait. We only use individual air freight shipping in emergencies as it is considered 100 times more destructive to the environment and not cost effective. Original design, fair prices and a kind thought for the environment. That’s what gets us out of bed in the morning.

JOIN US ON A ROOM SAFARI Sculptural and practical statement objects that not only look good, but are doing good too. Room Safari from Belgium was established in 2001 (the same year we started here at top3 by design!) They produce whimsical objects that are intrinsically practical, yet provide a bold statement through their strong and simple shapes. Their manufacturing is also helping those in need. All Room Safari products are produced in Berlin via a workshop for disabled people, who find it difficult to find work in the general job market. In this environment, they receive support and are valued for their skilled contributions to the resulting final product.

A resurgence in the use of a home bar stemmed from the series Mad Men, and then more recently we were lured into the appeal of pouring a quick drink by the suave Harvey Spector in Suits. A dedicated area as a home bar keeps your favourite drinks on hand and makes more of a ‘moment’ out of pouring your drink. Keep it sophisticated and add feature wine racks, glassware and specialty decanters to ensure your home bar doesn’t just look like a bottleshop row of alcohol in the corner. 6. A NEW LEASE ON LIFE bar + wine + water

No two Danish Fuel jerry cans are alike, so these truly are rare and unique pieces of art that are making use of surplus jerry cans from the war. The jerry can was designed by the Germans in 1939 during World War II. These bar cabinets (and bathroom cabinets) are up-cycled from discarded fuel cans, which might otherwise end up in landfill. Old rust and paint is removed by sandblasting and then new powder coating added. Real timber internal shelving and panel detailing create the finishing touch. Each cabinet takes 3-4 weeks to make, with every single one resulting in a unique statement piece. The iconic Danish Fuel designs are made using jerry cans that are collected from military surplus stockhouses in Europe.

A PRECIOUS DROP Water and diamonds. The world’s most treasured resources are getting more rare each day and need to be treated with care. The Rare carafe + Radiant glasses were inspired by the scarcity of water. “In this day and age, most people are used to the fact that water is always available, which makes it under appreciated. We, therefore, need to start cherishing it, like diamonds.” Says the designer, Lara Van Der Lugt The carafe is made out of mouth blown crystal glass, which catches the light in the manner of a real diamond. Rare carafe $88, Radiant glasses, set of 2 $63

Proudly made in Denmark. Classic Danish Fuel jerry can comes in a wide variety of colours and internal timbers and includes ID tags, certificates, maintenance kit, ammunition box, jute dust-bag and shipping crate $1,095 New Nano Black Basic is available with oak shelving only, is not numbered and does not come with the accessories listed above $795

UST ADD FRUIT

2.

Fresh fruit infused water is a great alternative to drinking soda or store purchased flavoured drinks which contain preservatives and are often high in additional sugar. The many health claims of fruit infused waters are largely not backed by research, but anything that helps you drink more water is a good thing!

COCKTAIL HOUR

Nutritionally there are certainly advantages to drinking fruit (or vegetable) infused waters. Nutrients leak out of the fruit directly into the water. In addition, fruits are naturally rich in antioxidants. Teas such as green tea or chamomile are also antioxidantrich, so adding tea to your recipes is also a great way to get your daily dose of goodness.

Create your own stunning cocktail infusions which are like a work of art on the dining table. The Porthole is a simple, beautiful infusion vessel designed by Martin Kastner of Crucial Detail design studio. Place fresh ingredients inside and let it sit for up to 24 hours. It can be used to create striking cocktails, oils, teas, dressings, lemonade, coffee, or any other type of cold infusion.

Some popular infusions you could try are: cucumber and mint, lemon and ginger, kiwi fruit and strawberry, lemon and cayenne pepper or grapefruit, orange and rosemary. Different fruits ‘perform’ differently when infused. Cucumbers, citrus fruits, melons, and mint flavour water very quickly, while apples, cinnamon, fresh ginger root, and rosemary need an overnight soak in the fridge. Be aware that if you include the citrus rinds, they can create bitter flavours after just a few hours. To avoid the bitterness, cut the rinds off citrus before creating your infusion.

1+4. Porthole infuser $158 2 + 5. Eva Solo MyFlavour carafe 1L $89.90 3. Normann Copenhagen Block trolley round $475

3.

Experiment with fresh in-season fruit, but be aware that soft fruits like melons and sliced strawberries become waterlogged and may fall apart.

NEW

4.

Although not as beautiful to look at, crushing the fruit or herbs can release additional flavours and colours. Infuse the water for 1-2 hours at room temperature or in the fridge for 3-4 hours to achieve good flavour and water colour. For a stronger flavour, infuse overnight or up to 12 hours. If you do infuse for 4 or more hours, remove the fruit and herbs from the water, then store the infused water in the fridge for up to 3 days. It is always best to keep your infused waters refrigerated. Cold temperatures keep fruit –and all foods – fresh. If your infused water looks or smells weird after a few days, then do not drink it! Drinking the water the same day or next day is ideal, but you can drink your refrigerated infused waters within 3 days of creation. However, you should always drink un-refrigerated infused water the same day. Remember, your fresh infusion is not filled with preservatives! Infused waters are meant to be consumed fresh. Hot water destroys the fragile enzymes and vitamins in fruit which are beneficial to your health, and hot water will also make you fruit fall apart and look a lot less pretty. Fruits will release their flavour and colour faster if left to sit at room temperature. Do not drink fruit infused water that has been sitting out at room temperature for more than 4-5 hours because it will become a breeding ground for mould and bacteria (even if you cannot see it).

THE ULTIMATE STAYCATION As life gets seemingly more and more hectic, many of us are looking for ways to introduce a little downtime. Mini breaks are on the rise. Just a couple of days away can make the world of difference to our mindset and have us inspired and firing again when we get back to the office on a Monday morning. GOT A BLUNT YET? A revolution in Umbrella Design. The team at Blunt abhor the idea that umbrellas are at the forefront of the throwaway culture. (And we wholeheartedly agree!) Blunt’s quest is to change the acceptance of built-in obsolescence and shoddy workmanship one BLUNT™ umbrella at a time.

Putting it bluntly, their umbrellas are the single most significant advancement in umbrella design, in over a century... or even longer. Who really knows how long, but they are without doubt, the world’s best umbrellas designed in New Zealand. Stocked in some of the most exclusive stores around the world, including Net-a-Porter, Nordstrom and Boots, and of course, top3 by design. Lanolips’ is Australian owned - and based in Sydney. They only use lanolin from Australian and New Zealand wool. Because the quality is the best, it’s guaranteed to be animalcruelty-free - PLUS they love Australia and want to support local! Lanolips ONLY tests on people, not animals. What is Lanolin? Lanolin is a 100% natural substance found on the wool of sheep that helps keep their coat protected and dry throughout the year. Sheep’s wool grows continuously; if it’s not sheared annually the fleece will become soiled - and too heavy for the animal. Lanolin is the animal-cruelty-free by-product of wool washing after shearing. Lanolip’s lanolin goes through an exclusive refining process for ultra pure grade lanolin.

HAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND Original Design advocate, journalist, stylist and founder of the Design Daily blog, David Harrison delves into the delight of a round coffee table.

1.

12 3

It might seem a stretch but it’s very likely that circular coffee tables have been around as long as the wheel – well shortly after when the first person had the bright idea of upending a cartwheel onto a rock and found that it made quite a useful surface to eat from. It is therefore hard to advance the notion that circular coffee tables have become a hot new trend. The round table is without doubt an established idea but in recent times it has had something of a renaissance. Not since the 50’s when the Danes championed the benefits of proximity, including the eye-contact possible while sitting around circular tables, has there been such a level of interest. It’s not all that surprising in this era obsessed with geometry where cones, spheres and domes dominate the world of lighting and the circle and sphere are breaking through into furniture forms – crescent shaped sofas, circular armchairs, outdoor sun loungers even the occasional bed.

the top3 | Coffee Tables

1. Moon table by Ethnicraft (previously known as Universo Positivo) small Ø55 x 29cm high $570, large Ø100cm x 29cm high $1,150 2. Muuto Around coffee table, small Ø45 x 46cm high $620, large Ø72 x 37.5cm high $979 3. Shunan table from Puik Design high Ø46 x 46 x 46cm $220, low Ø55 x 40 x 55cm $278

2.

2.

The benefits of a circular coffee table are two-fold – they make for a streamlined floor plan being easy to walk around and they provide a break from the predominance of squares and rectangles found in the average interior. Houses are generally made up of square walls, sofas are more often than not rectangular in shape and so are the majority of dining tables. Placing a round object in the midst of this creates dynamism and visual complexity. One of the coffee tables that has led the charge in this recent move to circular coffee tables is called (quite cheekily) ‘Around’ by Thomas Bentzen for Danish company Muuto. Designed in 2011 it has been a massive success for the company and looks like achieving classic status. The all-timber construction provides a contrast to the woven textiles found on sofas and rugs and its fine perimeter lip of plywood and quirky little gap has it standing out from the crowd.

Very much on trend in coffee tables, as we approach the end of 2018, is the combination of several materials in the one design: Leather and timber, metal and stone, glass and stone or woven fibres with porcelain tile. This marrying of materials generally emphasises the differences – a thin steel base with chunky timber top or timber frame with a super-fine porcelain tile surface. It allows for a subtle sense of play within the simple form and, while a coffee table will always be a supporting act in an interior, these designs can add a tremendous amount of flair to the overall look. Personality and practicality what more could one ask for?

IND STILLNESS

Take a few tips from a certified yogi into your daily life and enjoy the calm. Svasana is an asana (posture) that normally ends a yoga practice. It has many western names, including corpse pose, which even though it sounds gloomy, is the essence of the pose.

The rhythm and the pulsation of the practice flows through their body and the breath returns to a steady pace. I take this moment to provide a gentle shoulder rub before which I bathe my hands in my favourite Addition Studios Essential Oil, Blue Gum & Lemon Myrtle - evoking the Australian bush and the fragrant soothing smell of lemon myrtle. A perfect end to my classes. Namaste.

The yogi lies down on the mat in stillness with their feet spread wide, chin gently tucked towards their throat and their eyes closed.

ESCAPE TO NATURE Long drives on empty roads, disconnecting from the material world, to hidden houses deep in the country, and reconnecting with the land. Introducing a fragrance collection inspired by the Scandinavian harmony with nature. HEIA [hej.ya] Norwegian for heathland. Remote wilderness, primeval terrain, nourishment for the soul. The rough, exposed terrain in the higher altitude fells of Norway and Sweden offers a colourful home to hardy shrubs, wild herbs and berries, and fragrant hills of heather. | Notes of heather + thyme, bearberry and leaf sap.

NEW

ROSENHAVE Danish for rose garden. Nordic rose gardens are precious places, exposed to the raw climate only the hardiest varieties, and most careful owners, can expect their fragile fragrance blushes to survive and prosper after the long, frozen winters. | Notes of alba rose + elderflower, blackcurrant buds and lily of the valley.

LYSNING Danish for forest glade, silent clearing, shadow oasis, serenity for the mind. The dense boreal forest canopy occasionally reveals glades and clearings, hidden escapes where the sunlight touches the ground and the flora responds in abundance. | Notes of mosses + lichens, pine needles and cloudberry.

OUR URBAN JUNGLE

Christine has a serious passion for plants and all things beautiful and botanical. Christine has worked at The Garden of Eden Nursery for over 15 years and is still amazed by the beauty in nature. Here she shares some of her favourite choices for indoor planting. I love the current trend to incorporate green life and natural elements into our living spaces to reconnect with nature. Indoor plants have been shown to reduce stress, increase productivity, purify the air and make us happier humans. With such great benefits and beautiful plants available, why not add some to your home or office.

Terrariums are perfect for creating a mini rainforest and I love the addition of a small branch, a beautiful stone or another little piece of nature you have collected on your travels. If you want a more tropical vibe you can’t go past a lush Rhaphis or Kentia Palm to fill your room with greenery. These are so easy to grow and will transform any space. Once you have chosen your perfect plant the next step is picking the perfect planter. With so many beautiful planters available it’s easy to find the perfect match. The Christine Dahan | The Garden of Eden Nursery The Garden of Eden Nursery have a mission to help you create an environment that nurtures and inspires you daily.

Some of my favourite indoor plants include hanging plants such as Devils Ivy, String of Pearls and the weird and wonderful Rhipsalis and Hoyas. You can match these with a beautiful hanging planter or a cute pot on a shelf and let them trail.

MAKING AN ENTRANCE The entrance to your home is far more than a place to walk in and out the front door. It is the first place that visitors experience your home. What is it saying to your guests when they walk in the door? Most of us these days need all the space we can get so ensuring the space not only looks great but functions well is vital. Interior Design 101 - use mirrors to create more visual space. But outside that, a mirror at the entrance to your home gives you a last minute place to spot check your look as you dash out the door.

7.

A space to put down your mail and keys and some hooks for your jackets and handbags are an easy way to make good use of a small area and make it work hard. Having somewhere to put everything as you walk in is a great way to decompress after a busy day out in the “real’ world. Consider drawers if you want to hide a lot of mail and clutter or force yourself to be organised with a clean open look. 8.

CONVERTING A NOOK Look around your home, is there a corner that just seems to collect “stuff. Banish the junk and convert this wasted space into your own little dressing room. My career has run the gamut of working spaces from the corporate corner office to the warehouse of a start-up, from a convivial co-working space of six people to the solo experience of my kitchen table. I even wrote most of one book in a car park waiting for my daughter to finish her ballet lessons. The laptop and the smart phone have untethered us from a dedicated place to work but with that liberty comes a blurring of boundaries that can mean emails are attended to at midnight and we never actually clock off. It is therefore with boundaries in mind that the surge of co-working enterprises - supplying a desk, Wi-Fi and access to meeting rooms - is significantly gaining traction. Disrupting traditional rental models with flexible terms and turning to designer interiors as an attractor of the right clientele, these spaces cater to the freelancer, the small business and the satellite office. What is more, the design treatment of each space enables you to find your tribe be it in a warehouse with exposed brick and lunchtime yoga, an architect designed space with timber panelling, cognac leather seating and a whiskey sour to end the working day or a high-rise CBD location with modular Italian furniture and city views. They are all engineered to gather communities of like-minded

people together with events and cultural programmes to engage their clients and create opportunities for conversation and cross-pollination of ideas. This is in stark contrast to the experience of working from home where frequent trips to the fridge, in the hope that someone has popped a bar of Lindt 70% in there, are punctuated with putting on a wash or even indulging in a quick 30 minutes on Netflix. That is why, even at home, a dedicated workspace is valuable. There is a renewed interest in desks, which, crafted as a piece of furniture, are brought up-to-date with clever ways of accommodating cabling. Their use creates a sense of purpose, of containment and order, which allows the mind to focus. It also enables the aesthetic to mimic the feel of the rest of the house with the addition of a perfect desk light and accessories. As a perpetual list maker I am sucker for a good notebook, and am drawn to objects of beautiful utility – the tape dispenser, the pair of scissors, desk organisers, sturdy folders, pencils and pens. You see, I enjoy the illusion of order even if I am not always its best practitioner.

Kay Bojesen’s premise in his work was a conviction that his objects should have life, blood and a heart. This is especially obvious in his beloved wooden animals, which have adorned children’s bedrooms with smiles, taking children’s dreams to far-flung lands. They stay with you from childhood into adulthood, and we call them classics because we would not want to be without them. And because they were made with love, imagination and intelligence. 100 YEARS OF BAUHAUS

An original Bauhaus design from 1923. The geometric shapes visually represent the moves allowed by the various pieces with ingenious simplicity, i.e. the bishop can move in diagonals, thus is shaped as a cross.

In 2019, Germany will be celebrating the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus, together with partners worldwide. Founded in Weimar in 1919, relocated to Dessau in 1925 and closed in Berlin under pressure from the Nazis in 1933, the school of design only existed for a total of 14 years. All the same, the legendary Bauhaus – School of Design has continued to have a lasting effect up until the present day. It is considered the most effective export of 20th century German culture.
