Patrick Kelly Branch Manager watfordsales@lordsbm.co.ukLeverstock Green exited the Herts Charity Shield at the first-round stage against a strong Tring Athletic side. It was a good pre-season workout for both sides. Leverstock were missing several key players and fielded a number of new signings against a Tring side featuring most of their marquee summer signings. The key portion of the match was midway through the first half, where Tring scored three goals in twelve minutes against a Leverstock defence that hadn’t played together before and had yet to properly gel. Despite being the middle of July, it was a cold and wet afternoon throughout with some tricky conditions.
Tring had the game’s first near miss in the 10th minute when Guiseppe Delgaudio hit a shot from the edge of the box just wide. However, it was Leverstock who scored the game’s opening goal in the 13th minute. Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica made a strong run into the box, and squared to set up Chris Blunden, who had the goal at his mercy and slotted a first-time shot past Eric Negraru in the Tring goal. Their lead barely lasted two minutes, as a back pass towards keeper Dan O’Brien came up short, and Max Hercules nipped in and slid the ball past O’Brien for the equaliser. Tring started to take control of the game, and in the 19th minute a through pass put Josh Chamberlain through on goal, and the former Berkhamsted forward made no mistake as he slotted the ball past O’Brien for a 2-1 Tring lead. Chamberlain was through again in the 21st minute, but this time his shot was saved by O’Brien. However, a third Tring goal arrived in the 27th minute as Dave O’Connor rose to head home a cross from close range.
The game wasn’t over yet, though, and five minutes later Leverstock were back in it. Joe Sadler’s pass found Blunden in the box, and Blunden turned and pulled away from a defender before squeezing home a shot which beat Negraru at his near post and pulled the score back to 3-2. There was almost a fourth Tring goal in the 40th minute but Delgaudio’s header hit the bar, and the game went into the break with Tring holding a slender 3-2 lead.
Conditions continued to be difficult in the second half, and there were few chances for both sides. In the 78th minute Leverstock had what looked like a golden opportunity as they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. It was prime Blunden territory, and he pulled out another great effort which curled over the wall and was heading for the top corner until Negraru tipped it over the bar. There was another near miss in the 82nd minute when a shot from Rio Beach was parried away by Negraru and the rebound just eluded Blunden.
With Leverstock pushing everything forward in search of an equaliser, it was always likely that they would get caught out, and so it proved in the 84th minute when they were caught on the break from a corner and Harry Shepherd raced clear to steer a shot wide of O’Brien for a fourth Tring goal that sealed the tie. For Tring it was revenge for the St Mary’s Cup Final defeat at the end of last season, while for Leverstock it was a promising performance, with new signing Nat Connolly being named Man of the Match, and 16-year-old Joe Sadler, who has come up through the club’s EJA sides, also catching the eye. Leverstock Green completed their pre-season build-up with a 5-1 win at Oxhey Jets in Saturday’s friendly.
The game’s first chance came in the 19th minute when Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica went on a strong run into the box before pulling the ball back to Luke Beckwith, whose shot brought a great save out of the Oxhey keeper. Five minutes later Rio Beach went on a mazy run into the box but pulled the ball back behind the waiting Stefanoaica.
In the 31st minute a pass from Joe Sadler put Stefanoaica through on goal, but again the keeper did well, coming off his line to save the shot. Finally, in the 34th minute Leverstock broke the deadlock as Stefanoaica laid the ball off to Mikey HavillTierney, whose shot hit the inside of the near post and went in at the opposite corner. Leverstock keeper Loris Marcimain kept his side in front in the 41st minute with a great save when the Oxhey 7 was through on goal. Four minutes into the second half Nat Connolly had a run at goal but was again denied by good work from the Oxhey keeper. In the 54th minute the scores were levelled as Marcimain was beaten by a superb long-range strike.
Leverstock went back in front in the 73rd minute, with Brad Robinson setting up Beckwith for a run at goal and a shot which the keeper got a hand to but couldn’t keep out. It was 3-1 five minutes later with a trialist scoring with a bullet header from a corner. There was another impressive goal in the 81st minute as two 16-yearolds combined, with Jamie McIntosh putting Sadler through to slot home confidently. Sadler almost got his second in the 90th minute, but his shot was blocked, and the rebound was netted by Havill-Tierney for his second goal of the game.
It was another good performance by the Leverstock side, who have scored 25 goals in six friendlies, but the real tests start on Tuesday with the opening SSML Premier Division fixture away to St Panteleimon.

For the third straight season Leverstock Green opened their Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division campaign with a win and a clean sheet. A penalty from Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica and a goal from skipper Dan Pett had Leverstock 2-0 ahead at half time, and they held their lead throughout a second half in which home side St Panteleimon were reduced to ten men.
The four games between these two sides last season were all tight affairs, and again there was little to choose between the sides this evening. The opening 20 minutes of the game produced little in the way of attempts at goal from either side. St Panteleimon had a strong spell midway through the half. On 24 minutes they had a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but the wall did its job and blocked the kick. A minute later Green keeper Loris Marcimain produced a sharp save to keep out a shot at his near post. Soon after a shooting opportunity opened up for George Androutsos, but his shot went over the bar.
Having weathered a few minutes of pressure, it was Leverstock who went on to score the game’s opening goal. In the 35th minute Stefanoaica showed his pace as he ran with the ball from near the halfway line into the penalty area. Before he could shoot, Stefanoaica was brought down by a tackle from Renzo Alves, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Stefanoaica took the spot kick himself, and although keeper Gustavo Nunes got a hand to it, the ball still went in to put the Green 1-0 up.
The lead was doubled during first half stoppage time. A pass from Chris Blunden allowed Pett to run at goal, and Pett appeared to have taken it too far, but he still managed to squeeze the ball between Nunes and the post for a 2-0 half time lead.
The second half was competitive and highly watchable, but still short of chances to extend either keeper. The closest that Leverstock came to another goal was in the 59th minute when Nat Connolly’s shot from the edge of the box went just over the bar. On 66 minutes St Panteleimon were reduced to ten men when Alves was dismissed for a second yellow card.
The home side if anything looked stronger with ten men than they had with eleven, but Leverstock’s defence was in no mood to give up their clean sheet, with central defender Callum Neal having a particularly good game and being named man of the match.
