Patrick Kelly Branch Manager watfordsales@lordsbm.co.ukRecords show that the club goes back as far as 1902 and although success has mainly been confined to the League and Cups, our club name still stands proudly in the FA Handbook as winners of the FA Vase when in the1983-84 season the players and fans made the trip to Wembley and in front of a crowd of 8,500 beat Stamford 3-2, a memorable occasion where the memories of a great day are portrayed in the Club Committee Room. There was however a period of dark days when in 2012-13 the future of the club looked bleak where lack of leadership at the helm of the club led to a situation whereby outstanding debts meant there could have been a distinct possibility of the club folding. However, a new committee of fresh faces was found and under the stewardship of Glyn Warwick the club managed to see off the threats of the bailiffs knocking at the club door. The new motivated Committee members were able to put plans in place, and over several years has attracted both new sponsors and supporters to the club, thus ensuring a brighter future.
At the end of 2018 – 19 season many Stansted followers (The Airport Army) were reflecting on what had been the most successful club season we have had for many years. To be able to display not just one trophy, but three because as well as collecting the League cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy we also received the Shield for our Second-place finish in the League. The club were not considered by many to be in contention for any honours after the experience of the previous season when the club won a late reprieve from the FA and avoided relegation to step 6 status. That made the success even more remarkable and was great testament to the hard work put in by the whole coaching staff and players.
With the Essex Senior League now in its 53rd season of competition we are proud to still be able to promote the club as being one of the Leagues founder members, although prior to the success of2018 - 19 season our only other honours were a League Title in 2009-10 and two League Challenge Cup wins in 1983-84 & 2010-11, therefore the club are now hoping to build on these latest achievements.
2020-21 season saw the introduction of 3 junior teams at different age groups competing for us, which we hope will kick start the clubs long term plan of having a pathway through to Senior Football.
Further evidence of that was the introduction of Over 45’s Veterans Football which introduced an avenue for those ex-players who thought their playing days were over and in season 202021 gained promotion to compete in the Premier Division of the Essex Veterans League in 2021-22. Operating a football club at this level in the FA pyramid is extremely challenging. What with financial burdens, player expectations and the need to compete with other major sports organisations in our geographical area, therefore great emphasis is placed on all the volunteers associated with the club.
We now embark on a new challenge for our first season in the Spartan South Midland Football League hoping we give a good account of ourselves in 2023/24.
It was an Emirates FA Cup classic at the Lords Builders Merchants Stadium as Leverstock Green FC scored two late goals to win an eight-goal thriller against Essex Senior League side White Ensign. Leverstock’s strike partnership of Chris Blunden and Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica were in top form, scoring all five goals between them in this Extra Preliminary Round tie.
With regular keeper Austin Byfield still away and backup keeper Loris Marcimain unavailable, Fergus Moore drafted in former Edgware Town keeper Greg Marsh. The visitors were the first to go close with only a minute played as Robbie Farrell struck the post with a shot from the edge of the box. In the 13th minute White Ensign thought they had a penalty when Marsh appeared to bring down Farrell just inside the box, but after consulting his assistant, the referee awarded a free kick just outside the box, which was defended well.
White Ensign had been the better side for the opening 15 minutes, but Leverstock Green FC opened the scoring in the 16th minute with their first real attack of the game. A defensive slip allowed Stefanoaica to run clear down the right and square the ball for Blunden to shoot home from the edge of the six-yard box. Four minutes later the lead was doubled. Nat Connolly curled in a free kick from the left edge of the penalty area, which was headed away, but only as far as Stefanoaica, who took a couple of touches before blasting a shot which flew into the net despite the efforts of defender Ben Sargent to clear it off the line.
The visitors had a chance to pull a goal back in the 28th minute as Farrell was through on goal, but Marsh produced a good save to turn the shot round the post. The resulting corner was not cleared, though, and a second cross was headed home at the near post by Nathan Wilson to reduce the arrears to 2-1.
There was a lengthy period of stoppage time at the end of the half due to an injury to Ryan Carruthers requiring treatment. There was another good chance for Leverstock when a pass from Blunden put Stefanoaica through, but Ensign keeper Harry Fairs saved well, and Carruthers headed wide from the result ing corner. At the other end Marsh saved a diving header from Archie McFadden. In the 7th minute of stoppage time Rio Beach produced a bit of magic, going on a dazzling run into the box before pulling the ball back for Blunden to shoot home his second and send Leverstock Green FC into the break with a 3-1 lead.
The game was still very much in the balance, though. Ensign brought on substitute Billy Bonham-Dare at half time, and three minutes into the half Bonham-Dare received the ball with his back to goal before turning and shooting past Marsh to pull it back to 3 -2.
Stefanoaica showed his pace again in the 58th minute, going on another run at goal but being denied by Fairs. On 71 minutes Stefanoaica got in behind the last defender and headed for goal again, this time squaring for Luke Beckwith, whose shot brought a great save out of Fairs.
Going into the last ten minutes Leverstock still held their slender lead, but it was back all square at 3-3 in the 81st minute as Robbie Allen ran into the box and beat Marsh at his near post with a shot from a narrow angle. That left Leverstock facing the prospect of a Wednesday night trip to Great Wakering, but there were still more goals to come. In the 86th minute Leverstock launched a quick counterattack. A pass from George MitchellGears gave Stefanoaica another run at goal, and his square pass across the six-yard box found Blunden, who controlled it and shot home to complete his hat-trick and put Leverstock Green FC back in front.
The visitors had to throw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser, which left them vulnerable to a quick break, and that is what happened in the third minute of stoppage time. A pass from Mikey Havill-Tierney put Stefanoaica through again, and this time he went alone, sidestepping Fairs to seal the tie with his second and Leverstock’s fifth goal.
Despite Blunden’s hat-trick, it was Stefanoaica’s two goals and two assists that earned him a man of the match nomination. There was also a notable moment in stoppage time as Joe Sadler came off the bench to make his FA Cup debut at the age of 16. Leverstock Green FC will now travel to Isthmian League North Division side Walthamstow in the Preliminary Round in two weeks’ time.

KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd).
After two weeks in Tanzania, a flame was lit in Derrick’s heart, and he was on a mission to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed children playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags. Twenty-one years on, KitAid has lots of volunteers and to date we’ve sent out 900,000+ kits to children and adults in 55 different countries across the world.

For the third straight season Leverstock Green opened their Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division campaign with a win and a clean sheet. A penalty from Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica and a goal from skipper Dan Pett had Leverstock 2-0 ahead at half time, and they held their lead throughout a second half in which home side St Panteleimon were reduced to ten men.
The four games between these two sides last season were all tight affairs, and again there was little to choose between the sides this evening. The opening 20 minutes of the game produced little in the way of attempts at goal from either side. St Panteleimon had a strong spell midway through the half. On 24 minutes they had a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but the wall did its job and blocked the kick. A minute later Green keeper Loris Marcimain produced a sharp save to keep out a shot at his near post. Soon after a shooting opportunity opened up for George Androutsos, but his shot went over the bar.
Having weathered a few minutes of pressure, it was Leverstock who went on to score the game’s opening goal. In the 35th minute Stefanoaica showed his pace as he ran with the ball from near the halfway line into the penalty area. Before he could shoot, Stefanoaica was brought down by a tackle from Renzo Alves, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Stefanoaica took the spot kick himself, and although keeper Gustavo Nunes got a hand to it, the ball still went in to put the Green 1-0 up.
The lead was doubled during first half stoppage time. A pass from Chris Blunden allowed Pett to run at goal, and Pett appeared to have taken it too far, but he still managed to squeeze the ball between Nunes and the post for a 2-0 half time lead.
The second half was competitive and highly watchable, but still short of chances to extend either keeper. The closest that Leverstock came to another goal was in the 59th minute when Nat Connolly’s shot from the edge of the box went just over the bar. On 66 minutes St Panteleimon were reduced to ten men when Alves was dismissed for a second yellow card.
The home side if anything looked stronger with ten men than they had with eleven, but Leverstock’s defence was in no mood to give up their clean sheet, with central defender Callum Neal having a particularly good game and being named man of the match.
