We're targeting discrimination in football. Can you help?

We are taking a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination in football. We’re calling on clubs and leagues like your own to report hate, prejudice or discrimination whenever you see it or hear it. For those people who behave in a racist, sexist or homophobic way, the message is clear. Enough is Enough. When we know it has happened, we can take the actions needed to remove discriminatory behaviour. We'll be doing so through a range of punishments: • Players will be removed from play and suspended. • Teams can have points deducted. • Grounds can be closed for repeat offenders. Together we can end hate in football. Spread the word that discrimination of all forms will be punished. Share with your welfare officers, league and club officials, and everyone across your league and clubs. We want everyone across grassroots football to know... ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. TELL US, WE’LL TACKLE IT.

Scott and Ferg’s 250th Game

Fir

Scott and Ferg’s 250th game in charge was last week. So we would like to thank them for what they have done for the club, and for their continuing efforts to bring the club as far as they can. Dan caught up with Scott after the game and asked him some questions about the time they have been with the club. Q - Your first competitive game in charge was a 1–0 FA Cup defeat away at Stanway Rovers back in August 2021. If you could go back to that dressing room before kick-off, what would you tell yourselves knowing what the next 249 games would bring? A - I would say to trust in the process that we believed we could create from the first training session. Accept the lows and don’t get too exuberant with the highs. Q- When you took the job, did either of you genuinely believe you’d still be here 250 competitive games later? A - I definitely didn’t expect to be anywhere near 250 games. When we first joined we invited all season before squad to pre-season. And from senior players only Dan Weeks actually stayed to give us a chance. Q - Looking back at the club you inherited compared with the Leverstock Green FC of today, what do you think has changed the most?

A - Well the first thing we insisted on was that the bar stays open past 5.30 on a Saturday. We made a conscious effort to make sure that any player we signed would buy into creating a club environment that everyone can enjoy. That’s committee members, supporters and players. Q- You’ve had some incredible days at the club. If you had to pick one single moment from the first 249 games that stands above everything else, what would it be, and why? A - That’s an easy one. The play off Final. To have 1000 supporters in Pancake lane. The work everyone had to do in a few days to play the final was amazing and probably something the club will never do again. Then for the players to play the way they did in the final was just incredible. Q - And on the flip side, what has been the toughest moment you’ve experienced as managers? A - Probably last pre season. After staying at step 4 on last game of the season we hoped that players would want to return and push on the following season. This was not how it happened. We only had a few players willing to stay. Recruiting was hard due to financial constraints. Every player we approached thinks we are step 4 and loads of money like everyone else in the division. What know realised was we got promoted on no budget and stayed up on £15 a week per player. Credit must go to the group of players that stayed because result was hard to come by but they stuck at it and trusted us as staff to get players in and turn it around. Q - Last season saw the club achieve its highest-ever league finish. What did that achievement mean to you personally?

A - Finishing in the clubs highest ever position of 12th at step 4 was just unbelievable. As I said last pre season was tough and then to think we entered the bottom 4 of the league around about Xmas. To then finish 12th. All credit players who stayed and the new recruits we managed to get in. Ferg’s little black book and Aaron’s constant messaging of players really did the trick. Q - You’ve been side-by-side for 250 games. What do you think is the biggest strength of your partnership and what does the other one do that drives you absolutely mad? A- I would say our biggest strength is that we both hate losing and are passionate about football. We don’t always see eye to eye. Neither of us are yes men. We would say our point on selection of team and tactics and then between us go with what we think is best for the team for that game. As for drive me mad it has to be Ferg on the sidelines. Doesn’t matter if he is praising a player or having a go at them. It’s always in a tone that feels it’s more having a go. There is no difference. I’m sure the players always think he is having a go. Oh also when Ferg decides to show everyone his lucky Paddy power pants. Thats a sight no one needs to see. Q - When your time at Leverstock Green eventually comes to an end, what do you hope people will say about Scott and Fergie’s time in charge? A - As for after we go you hope that supporters and club staff will see that we created that environment we promised in the interview. A club everyone can be proud of. That we also achieved promotion and cup wins during our time with memories for everyone associated with the club. The truth is what people say will not bother me at all. As it will probably

mean we have been sacked so people will think that we deserved to go as results not good enoug

Visiting Club History: Records show that the club came into existence in 1875 making Royston the third oldest club in Hertfordshire after Hitchin and Bishop’s Stortford. The club's first notable achievement occurred during the 1911/12 season when they won the Creake Charity Shield by defeating Wisbech 1-0 in extra time. In more recent times, Royston achieved significant success when they were promoted to the Herts County Premier League during the 1969/70 season. Subsequently, they became champions in 1972/73 and 1976/77. The team rejoined the South Midlands League in 1978 and secured the Division One title immediately. The club's success continued with appearances in the Herts Charity Shield final in 1979 and as runners-up in the South Midlands League Premier Division in 1980. The Herts Charity Shield was won in 1981/82, and two years later, Royston joined the Isthmian League Division Two North, remaining there for a decade before returning to the South Midlands League in 1994. After facing a challenging period that led to relegation from the South Midlands League Premier Division at the end of the 2006/07 season, Paul Attfield was appointed as the manager, with Tony Galvin returning as the 1st Team Coach in November 2007. Under Paul's leadership, the team underwent significant changes, and a 17-game unbeaten streak propelled them from the bottom of the table to a commendable 5th-place finish in the League. This set the foundation for the successful 2008/09 season, where they secured the South Midlands Division One League title with impressive stats: W33, D4, L3, GF138, GA30, GD+108, PTS 103. The 2011/2012 season marked a pivotal moment in the club's history when they clinched the South Midlands Premier Division title, earning promotion to Step 4 in the form of the EvoStik Southern League Division One Central. In their first season back at Step 4 after 19 years, Royston exceeded expectations, consistently performing well and even contending for a playoff spot. However, a last-minute equaliser in the final game dashed their hopes. The following season also saw them reach the playoffs, but the team faced challenges after Paul Attfield's resignation due to ill health. Steve Castle was appointed Manager in December 2013, and the team continued to strive for success, ultimately earning promotion to the Southern League Premier Division, marking the highest level of play in the club's 142-year history. Seasons 2017/18 and 2018/19 were characterised by solid performances, finishing 7th and 9th respectively in the Premier Division Central. The 2019/20 season proved to be one of the most successful and thrilling in the club's history, with remarkable performances in both the

FA Cup and FA Trophy. The team's standout performance in the FA Trophy brought immense pride, especially with victories against higher-ranked teams, although the Concord Rangers quarter-final tie ended in disappointment. Despite strong contention for the league title, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the nullification of the season, leading to bitter disappointment. Season 2021/22 resulted in an eighth place in the league following an inconsistent league campaign. Performances in FA competitions were disappointing, beaten at Garden Walk by Step 4 Mildenhall Town and exiting the FA Trophy early, beaten by Kingstonian in a penalty shoot-out. The highlight of the season was wining the Southern League Challenge Cup, beating the Southern League Premier (South) champions Taunton Town 7-0 on aggregate. In season 2022/23 injuries to key players and poor away form in the league ended with a 13th place finish in the table. In the FA Cup & Trophy Royston Town were defeated at the second hurdle, by Hemel Hempstead & Heybridge Swifts respectively. Season 2023/24 saw Chris Watters take over as manager, mixed form resulted in a mid-table finish, with early exits in the FA Cup & FA Trophy. Season 2024/25 ended in a mid-table position in the league after slipping away towards the end of the season when drawing eight of our last twelve games. We performed better in the FA competitions, falling at the third hurdle both in the FA Trophy & FA Cup, losing to higher-league opposition in both cases. Last season was a season to forget for The Crows, our league form never really got going, resulting in relegation that ended our ten year residence at Step 3. We exited the FA Cup at the third hurdle, beaten by Kings Lynn at Garden Walk and were beaten by Welling United in the FA Trophy. The bright spot of our season came in April, when we beat Berkhamsted at Clarence Park to win the Herts FA Charity Cup for the first time in our history.

Leverstock Green U18 Green U18

6 vs 0

Crawley

It was another big win for the Under-18s as they continued their 100% league start with a fourth straight win in the SCFYL Corinthian Division. Oscar Roe scored twice in the opening five minutes of the game, and by 20 minutes it was 40 with Sam Dey scoring two goals in two minutes. Ashton Corder added the fifth just before half time, and Lucas Hammer made it 6-0 early in the second half before Crawley Green had two players sent off.

Aylesbury United

2 vs 2

Leverstock Green

It was another heartbreaking ending for Leverstock Green as they were denied a deserved win by a controversial stoppage time penalty decision. Leverstock had dominated the game despite playing with ten men for much of it, but let a two-goal lead slip over the closing minutes. Leverstock were already without their two top goalscorers, with both Joe McCarthy and Iker Noguera Leon missing the game through suspension and injury respectively. The game was played in heavy rain throughout, with the newly-laid pitch at Chesham holding up well, although the ball was being increasingly held up by surface water during the game. The home side could have gone in front in the second minute, but Bakary Daffeh put the ball over the bar from close range. The incident that changed the game occurred in the 14th minute, as both Kombe Kawimbe and an opponent slid in for a 50-50 challenge. Kawimbe got to the ball first and cleared it 20 yards, but his momentum took him through into the opponent. It would have been a harsh yellow card, but the referee showed Kawimbe a straight red card. In the immediate aftermatch both Fergus Moore and Scott McGleish were dismissed from the Leverstock dugout for their protests. The injustice only served to motivate the ten man Leverstock side. In the 23rd minute a ball into the box from Vlad Karuchok just eluded George Mitchell-Gears. Wil Turner shot into the side netting for Aylesbury in the 26th minute, but two minutes later Leverstock took the lead. A free kick was cleared to the edge of

the box, where Ryan Carruthers picked it up and and fired a shot into the top corner of the net. Ademide Baruwa came close to adding a second goal in the 31st minute but his shot curled just wide of the post. Aylebury might have equalised in the 41st minute but Jake Bewley’s long-range shot cannoned off the bar. Leverstock continued to work hard and have the better of the game in the second half. Ashton Corder came off the bench in the 54th minute and within five minutes had made an impact. A back pass was sent back towards keeper Jack Hopwood, but the ball held up and Corder nipped in to get the ball first, taking it around Hopwood before slotting into the empty net from a narrow angle to put Leverstock 2-0 up. There was almost a third goal in the 74th minute. The ball was played forward to Corder and Hopwood came way out of his goal to challenge, but Corder won the challenge and sent a chip towards goal from 40 yards which looked like it was going in but landed inches wide of the goal. Leverstock’s new signing Romari Forde made his debut from the bench and had a chance to score in the 83rd minute from Corder’s pass, but Hopwood came off his line and saved well. At the other end Sonny French was through on goal in the 86th minute, but Ryan North pulled off a save and it looked like Leverstock were heading for a deserved three points. But in the 88th minute a shot from Ike Okwusogu found the corner of the net to pull a goal back for Aylesbury. Four minutes of stoppage time were signalled but two minutes into stoppages an Aylesbury player was through on goal. North

dived at his feet and appeared to win the ball, but the player fell over his outstretched arm. To the disbelief of much of the stadium the referee pointed to the penalty spot, and Finlay Reeves netted the spot kick to earn a point for his side that had looked very unlikely a few minutes earlier. Leverstock were left with only a point to show from a superb performance battling the odds. Aylesbury United (0) 2 (Okwusogu 88, Reeves 90+3 pen) 1. Jack Hopwood, 2. Frankie Bircham (14. Pooya Karimi 64 mins), 3. Jake Bewley, 4. Sonny French, 5. Archie Quinlan, 6. Chase Matthew (16. Ike Okwusogu H/T), 7. Rocko Tamplin (15. Sam Bajaha H/T), 8. Nathan Brown, 9. Finlay Reeves, 10. Bakary Daffeh, 11. Wil Turner. Subs not used: 17. Lee Stobbs, 18. Marvin Emmanuel. Leverstock Green (1) 2 (Carruthers 28, Corder 59) 1. Ryan North, 2. Callum Neal, 3. Vlad Karuchok, 4. George Mitchell-Gears, 5. Kombe Kawimbe, 6. Ryan Carruthers (17. Marcus Warren 77 mins), 7. Ademide Baruwa, 8. Dan Pett, 9. Jack Allen (12. Ashton Corder 54 mins), 10. Nat Connolly, 11. Timi Bada (15. Romari Forde 64 mins). Sub not used: 14. Callum Donnelly, 16. Aldo Petagine.

Leverstock Green

1 vs 2

Waltham Abbey

For the third straight game Leverstock Green suffered injury time heartbreak and were denied what would have been a deserved point from a superb performance against Waltham Abbey on Tuesday night. Leverstock got off to the worst possible start as they found themselves a goal down with barely thirty seconds on the clock. With their defenders caught upfield, a Waltham Abbey through ball from their own half put Bailey Stevenson clean through on goal and he made no mistake slotting the ball past Ryan North. But Leverstock soon settled down and began to threaten the visitors’ goal. Joe McCarthy and Iker Noguera Leon were both back in the side after missing out on Saturday, and they were instrumental in Leverstock’s forward play. In the 25th minute McCarthy turned inside the box and hit a shot just over the bar. Five minutes later Leon made a run into the box and hit a shot across goal which hit the far post with McCarthy just unable to convert the rebound. In the 36th minute Leverstock got their deserved equaliser and it came from the magic feet of Leon, who dribbled through the entire Waltham Abbey defence on a dazzling solo run before giving keeper Hafed Al Droubi the eyes and slotting the ball in at his near post. George Mitchell-Gears

might have added another goal in the 41st minute but shot over the bar from close range from a corner. In the second half it continued to be Leverstock that posed the most threat of the two sides. In the 56th minute a ball to the far post found Ryan Carruthers all alone, but Al Droubi pulled off a great save to keep out Carruthers’ shot and the rebound just eluded McCarthy. In the 71st minute McCarthy’s pace took him through on goal, but he ran the ball just too far ahead and could not get a shot away. Two substitutes combined in the 81st minute as Ashton Corder showed some great footwork before squaring for Timi Bada, who didn’t make full contact with his shot and it squirted just wide. A point would have been the least that Leverstock deserved from this match, but again they could not hold on to what they had through stoppage time. In the second minute of stoppage time the ball was in the Leverstock penalty area and a high boot almost made contact with an opponent’s head. The referee had little option but to award the penalty, and Prince William put the spot kick out of North’s reach to put his side in front. Leverstock brought two forwards off the bench to try to save the game, but there was not enough time to create any serious chances, and once again they came away with nothing from a game in which they had given everything.

Hadley

1 vs 1

Leverstock Green

It’s now six points from the last four games that Leverstock Green have allowed to slip away in stoppage time. Saturday’s game at Hadley saw a fourth-straight stoppage time disappointment as what would have been a hard-fought win turned into a draw. Leverstock went into the game with four players missing including previously ever-present Kombe Kawimbe through suspension and top scorer Iker Noguera Leon with hamstring issues. Their problems increased early in the game when Joe McCarthy went in for a sliding tackle on Hadley keeper Charles Taylor and won the ball, but McCarthy came off worse from the challenge. He struggled on for a few minutes trying to run off the injury, but in the 17th minute gave way to recent signing Romari Forde. At the end of a scrappy first half that saw neither side create a clear-cut chance, Timi Bada also had to leave the game with hamstring issues, and was replaced for the second half by Lucas Hammer, making two 16-year-olds on the pitch for Leverstock. It was Hammer who had the game’s first real chance in the 62nd minute when a shot from Nat Connolly deflected into his path, but his shot was gathered by Taylor. However, Leverstock were threatening again seconds later when Ashton Corder got in behind the Hadley defence and put the ball across goal where Forde came in at the far post to score his first goal for the club and put his side into a 1-0 lead. Hadley were reduced to ten men in the 77th minute. Louis Udeh had been shown his first yellow card eight minutes earlier, and a

shirt pull on Forde saw him dismissed with a second yellow card. In the 83rd minute Hadley were convinced that they had equalised, insisting that the ball had crossed the line in a goalmouth scramble, but neither referee nor linesman were in agreement and Leverstock remained in front. However, once again they could not hold out through stoppage time. It wasn’t a penalty this time, but a free kick awarded just outside the penalty area. Tommy Roberts’ shot went over the wall and past Ryan North to level the scores and rescue a point for Hadley. Hadley (0) 1 (Roberts 90+2) 1. Charles Taylor, 2. Bobby Webb (12. Ridwan Euba 66 mins), 3. Callum Ismail, 4. Cameron Ferguson (17.Tommy Roberts 69 mins), 5. Louis Udeh, 6. Ekow Coker, 7. Bobby Bircham, 8. Daniel Taylor, 9. Jordan Edwards, 10. Romey Meoded (18. Chibueze Echem H/T), 11. Luke Alfano (14. Rio Grant 79 mins) Leverstock Green (0) 1 (Forde 62) 1. Ryan North, 2. Callum Neal, 3. Vlad Karuchok (16. Aldo Petagine 80 mins), 4. Dan Pett, 5. George Mitchell-Gears, 6. Ademide Baruwa, 7. Timi Bada (15. Lucas Hammer H/T), 8. Nat Connolly, 9. Joe McCarthy (14. Romari Forde 17 mins), 10. Marcus Warren, 11. Ashton Corder. Subs not used: 12. Callum Donnelly, 17. Ted Wilkin.

By Matt Badcock Editor, The Non-League Paper HOW many Non-League clubs will beat EFL clubs in the FA Cup this weekend? Whether it will rival the ten we had back in 2020-21 – in that empty stadium era post covid – remains to be seen but one thing is almost certain, there will be somebody. It’s the first round proper this weekend with so many stories to be written – starting with Oxford City hosting Leicester City on Friday night. From Step 4 duo AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Stafford Rangers taking on Burton Albion and Grimsby Town, respectively, to Marine taking seven coach loads of fans to Bradford City, there can’t be a more special weekend in the whole of the football calendar. It’s one of the most frantic Saturday shifts we have each season at NLP HQ. But it’s always one of the most satisfying when the paper is put to bed and sent to the printers.

We love covering all the glory moments of the day – and the buildup. But, of course, the financial side can’t be overlooked. This is a time for clubs to cash in wherever they can. Those selected for TV will proudly bank £50,000 as a live fee on top of everything else. It’s why the live picks come with so much emotion for those who miss out. But there is also the long-term legacy a good cup run can bring. As Marine know only so well following their incredible run to the third round to take on Tottenham Hotspur back in that 2020-21 season. “We generated £650,000 and we used that money to put in a new 3G pitch and to completely renovate all of our bars in the front of the stadium,” CEO James Leary told The NLP. “The investment increased, the support grew and as a result of that we had a really successful period on the pitch where we got promoted twice and made the FA Trophy semi-final last year and three times out of the last six years, we’ve made the FA Cup first round. “After the Tottenham game, we hit a perfect storm where a lot of people would turn away from Premier League football with how much they were paying at Everton and Liverpool, it opened up a lot of people’s eyes to what they had on their doorstep. “As a result of that, our support went up from around 300 average attendance to now, which is around 1,400 average.”

For Step 4 Diamonds, their fourth round qualifying victory over Morecambe has already made a tangible difference even before they take on the League One Brewers. “It was our best day since forming, bar none,” chairman Rob Usher told us. “We had 12 days to get the ground ready – it's the hardest thing I've ever done as chairman, so it was an unbelievable feeling when the final whistle went. “We had probably 1,000 people at the Morecambe game who don’t usually come to Hayden Road. If 10 per cent of those fans come more regularly, that is game-changing. “Every pound that comes through our club has been earned by volunteers or spent at the club by supporters – we don’t spend what we like.” The players and results will rightly take the headlines this weekend. But beyond that the financial benefits will continue. Who knows how many shocks we will get – not to mention the all-Non-League ties – but let’s hope there’s plenty.

A few words about KitAid KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd). After two weeks in Tanzania, a flame was lit in Derrick’s heart, and he was on a mission to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed children playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags. Twenty-one years on, KitAid has lots of volunteers and to date we’ve sent out 900,000+ kits to children and adults in 55 different countries across the world. How to donate If you’d like to support the KitAid cause, the easiest way to donate your unwanted football kit, in order for us to find it a new home. Alternatively, if you don’t have any unwanted kit, but would still like to support us, we’re very grateful for any donations which will help to fund our annual costs as well as support other partnership charities where possible. We thank you for all your support. In working in some of the most under-privileged countries around the world, The Football Association is no stranger to seeing the impact the donation of something as simple as a shirt or a pair of shorts can make. KitAid has brought an enormous amount of pleasure and enjoyment to young and old alike through the gift of football kit and has shared the spirit of British clubs and the England team with communities in all corners of the globe. We are proud to be associated with KitAid and wish them all the best in their endeavours for the years to come. Jane Bateman, Head of International Relations, The Football Association
