Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Leverstock Green 0 Flackwell Heath 1 Saturday 19th March 2022

Leverstock Green were beaten by a second half goal in a scrappy, wind-affected contest against Flackwell Heath at Pancake Lane. It was a closely-fought game between the sides in 6th and 5th place in the division. Fergus Moore was again without several of his attacking options due to injury and unavailability. The early stages of the game saw the visitors have more of the ball as Leverstock defended against the wind, but with no chances created. In the 18th minute Flackwell had the ball in the net but it was ruled out as the ball had gone out of play in the build-up. A minute later at the other end Dan Pett had a clear sight of goal on the edge of the box, but pulled his shot wide. In the 23rd minute Flackwell had an attempt from a long-range free kick which deflected off the wall. A shot from the rebound brought a good save out of Alfie Bonfield, back in the Leverstock goal. Bonfield saved again from close range on 35 minutes when Jack Timberlake got on the end of a cross from Jamie Ayres. Three minutes later Pett went close for the Green side again with a shot that went just over the angle of post and bar. Defenders were still on top as the game reached half time without a goal. The second half saw even fewer chances than the first half, and the goal that proved to be the winner was, as in the game at Tring on Tuesday, a result of a ball straight down the middle not being defended well. It was a hopeful punt forward towards substitute Aiden Higgs, which should have been cleared by Dan Weeks, but Weeks allowed the ball to bounce, and then his attempted clearance was blocked. The ball ran to Finbar King, whose shot was parried by Bonfield, but Higgs followed up to net the rebound. Leverstock didn’t look much like getting back into the game until the last ten minutes when they switched to three at the back. Five minutes from time they had a free kick in a dangerous position outside the box, but Pett’s attempt rebounded off the wall. Three minutes into stoppage time Leverstock twice came close to snatching an equaliser, both chances coming from long throws into the box by Rawn Seale, and both were shots from Kian Wilkes. The first was cleared off the line by a combination of two defenders, and the second attempt took a deflection and brought a brilliant save out of Flackwell keeper Isaac Hay, who acrobatically tipped the ball over the bar. Leverstock Green (0) 0 Team: 1. Alfie Bonfield, 2. Brad Robinson (19. Scott McGleish 79 mins), 3. Rio Beach, 4. Dan Weeks , 5. Paul Marks (12. Jack Allen 62 mins), 6. Kian Wilkes, 7. Ethan Mooney, 8. THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE Saturday 26th March

SATURDAY HEADLINES Non-League Day saw many clubs trying new ideas to attract those fans of the big boys of football with free admission, clothing donations and fancy dress amongst the many ideas. The day also brought about the first of the Promotion/Relegation issues being announced as the final whistles blew. Stotfold’s win ensured the club were guaranteed at least a play-off spot while for new boys Irchester United that late equalizer condemned the club to a bottom three place and relegation. Saturday brought about 95 goals from the 24 games (an average of 3.96 per game). Jake Anthony (Harpenden Town) led the way with four goals while Richard Pacquette (Harefield United), Godlove Oppong (Tring Athletic), Redha Zekri (Letchworth Garden City Eagles), Conor Clarke (Stotfold), Josh Douglas Smith (Old Bradwell United) all netted hat tricks. PREMIER DIVISION Non-League Day brought about no change at both ends of the Premier Division standings, at the top there were routine wins for the leading six clubs, leaders New Salamis remain after winning 4-0 at Milton Keynes Irish and more on this one later in the ramblings. Second placed Risborough Rangers were also on the road, their trip to Aylesbury Vale Dynamos bringing about a 5-0 win while third placed Hadley saw off visiting Broadfields United 3-0. Behind the top three Leighton Town defeated a battling ten man Oxhey Jets in front of the SSML’s second highest League attendance of the season (524) thanks to two second half strikes following a red card for the visitors, Flackwell Heath won by a solitary goal at their neighbours Holmer Green, the hosts remain second from bottom while Harpenden Town thumped Baldock Town 6-1 thanks to a four goal haul from hosts striker Jake Anthony. At the bottom the current wooden spoonists Crawley Green were beaten by the odd goal in three at home by Ardley United while the free falling London Colney suffered their 12th successive league defeat when losing 0-6 at home against Tring Athletic. Elsewhere Dunstable Town squeezed past visiting Leverstock Green by the odd goal in three while Harefield United thumped Arlesey Town 5-0, having lead by a solitary goal at the break the hosts were in rampant form in the second half to bag the three points on offer. DIVISION ONE Title chasing Stotfold ensured themselves a play-off spot at the very least on Saturday with a thoroughly dominate 7-0 home win over relegation threatened Kidlington Reserves in front of yet another large crowd at the JSJ Stadium. Third placed Ampthill Town were thankful to a stunning late equalizer at bottom club Irchester United, the goal not only denied the hosts a rare win but also condemned them to a guaranteed bottom three finish in their debut SSML campaign and relegation. Elsewhere at the lower end of the standings London Tigers boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop with a 3-0 home success against fellow strugglers Raunds Town while Langford and Amersham Town both suffered away defeats, the former losing by a solitary goal at neighbours Bedford while latter were beaten 1-5 at Rushden & Higham United. Elsewhere Shefford Town & Campton continue to push hard for the play-offs with a 3-2 home win against Long Crendon, a result that all but rules their visitors out of contention. Northampton Sileby Rangers kept their play-offs hopes alive with a 2-1 win against visiting Thame United Reserves while in the day’s other Division One fixture Letchworth Garden City Eagles edged out visiting Buckingham Athletic by the odd goal in five.

2

DIVISION TWO Division Two leaders Old Bradwell United were ruthless yesterday as they moved three points clear at the top with an emphatic 6-0 success at struggling The 61FC (Luton), the visitors have now gone eleven league games without defeat while the hosts are winless in the league since mid-January. The big game at the top between third placed Pitstone & Ivinghoe and visiting fourth placed Milton Keynes College Football Academy was a tight affair and it was no surprise the clubs shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw with the hosts leveling in the dying minutes. At the foot of the table Tring Corinthians AFC’s hopes of avoiding the wooden spoon remain after a solitary goal defeat at Risborough Rangers Development while Sarratt won the big relegation sixpointer by the odd goal in nine against visiting Buckingham United after trailing at the break and more on this can be found later in these ramblings. Aston Clinton continued their fine form of late with a 3-0 success at Berkhamsted Raiders, the visitors have several games in hand on those above them. It was a late first half penalty that settled the points in the day’s other game between Codicote and New Bradwell St Peter, the Milton Keynes based visitors taking full advantage although looking at the excellent coverage from ‘The Cold End’ the ‘Cod’ should have had a spot kick themselves in the second period. AND FINALLY COMMITTEE AWAY DAYS Bob Flight was at Milton Keynes Irish and sends the following report: League leaders New Salamis travelled to MK Irish, who have a long list of injured or unavailable players, and secured the three points with an emphatic 4-0 victory. The game was only five minutes old before Salamis scored when a shot hit the Irish post but bounced out straight to Elijah Ogunseye who lashed it back into the home net. Nothing was seen of the home attack as they failed to muster a single shot on the visitor’s goal. Right on half time, Salamis scored again direct from a free kick as Derek Asamoah shot the ball into the Irish goal in off the far post. MK Irish improved in the second half and despite a couple of shots that went wide, failed to trouble the Salamis goal and only a super save by home keeper Jack Taylor kept Salamis from scoring again. The game then drifted into a stalemate with Salamis content to sit on their lead and MK Irish unable to pressure their opponents. However, the final minutes of the game exploded into life as Salamis scored two goals in quick succession. Firstly Asamoah benefited from a defensive mistake to score his second and Salamis third goal right on full time and secondly substitute Antonio Michael managed to find the net with a back heel effort in the first minute of added time. Thus Salamis completed a comfortable, if not an inspiring, win to maintain their promotion hopes. According to the watching mad Scot Bill Hamilton, It would be hard to find a better advertisement for NonLeague Day than the fayre provided for the residents of the idyllic Hertfordshire village of Sarratt. Their optimistic resolve to see their local team take on fellow Division Two strugglers Buckingham United was rewarded with a nine-goal thriller, Sarratt turning almost certain defeat into an incredible win with two goals deep into added time. What this game proved is that excitement can be generated not only by watching the most talented and skillful players in action but also by those whose sheer determination, commitment and obvious enjoyment of the game can provide a very watchable contest. Football’s beauty derives from its unpredictability. We had everything on view here …. fast, mazy runs, unbelievable misses, one of the craziest own goals you could possibly imagine, an outstanding strike from Buckingham’s Patrick Field which gave his side an interval lead and one which he extended early in the second half. 4-2 down with just minutes to play, it looked all over for Sarratt until Reon Thomas slotted in and with referee Andrew McCree glancing at his watch as the last minute of injury time approached, Craig Woollard leveled things up. The villagers who had made that special effort to support non-League day were more than satisfied … but wait, surely not, one more attack and a bullet header from Dan Ormsby completed the most incredible of turnarounds. It couldn’t be, could it – oh yes, Sarratt 5 Buckingham United 4. I have a feeling some of these newfound fans may be back again soon!

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE

Tuesday 29th March / Wednesday 30th March / Thursday 31st March MIDWEEK HEADLINES Midweek brought about 39 goals from the 12 games (an average of 3.25 per game). Charlee Yearwood (Shefford Town & Campton) netting a hat trick. THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Third Round The Gladwish Challenge Trophy Third Round tie between Risborough Rangers and Long Crendon was finally settled at the third attempt on Tuesday evening, Rangers won the original tie but were found guilty of a breach of the FA Laws of the Game when introducing a late substitute whose name had been missed off the team sheet was allowed to come on by the match officials, last week attempt two was abandoned due to a serious player injury so it was a case of third time lucky. Rangers went ahead in first half stoppage time and doubled the lead with seventeen minutes remaining. However Long Crendon were far from finished when reducing the deficit four minutes later to set up a tense finale, three minutes later it was 3-1 to Rangers before the visitors scored again to make it 3-2 with seven minutes left. Rangers dug deep to hang on and earn themselves a trip to Ardley United in the Quarter Finals next week. THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Quarter Final Tuesday night’s Gladwish Challenge Trophy Quarter Final was decided by a penalty shoot-out after Hadley and visiting Leverstock Green served up a highly entertaining 2-2 draw. Green, who gave a debut to U18 goalkeeper Oliver Frost, can count themselves unlucky not to progress after the hosts denied them with a stoppage time equalizer before going on to 4-3 on spot-kicks. Hadley will now face the winners of Ardley United or Risborough Rangers at Brickfield Lane in the Semi-Finals. PREMIER DIVISION Holmer Green picked up a big point in their bid to avoid the drop with a 1-1 draw against highflying visitors Harpenden Town, the hosts are now just a point behind safety. Baldock Town and visitors Dunstable Town fought out a goalless draw in the other midweek Premier Division action. DUDLEY LATHAM MEMORIAL (PREMIER DIVISION) CUP Second Round (Sponsored by S & T Sales and Marketing) Thursday night saw Risborough Rangers progress to the quarter-finals of the Dudley Latham Memorial (Premier Division) Cup following their penalty shoot-out win over visiting Harefield United following a 1-1 draw, Rangers will now host Hadley. DUDLEY LATHAM MEMORIAL (PREMIER DIVISION) CUP Quarter Final (Sponsored by S & T Sales and Marketing) Flackwell Heath became the first team through to the semi-finals of the Dudley Latham Memorial (Premier Division) Cup with a solitary goal win at home against Oxhey Jets, Heath will travel to the winners of the Dunstable Town or Ardley United tie in the last four. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Gladwish Challenge Trophy Harefield United 0 Leverstock Green 2 Saturday 22nd March 2022 Leverstock Green continued their run in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy as a goal in each half was enough for a 2-0 win at Harefield United in Tuesday night’s Third Round tie. Elgeniy Daalberg returned to action after a three-match absence, and with just over two minutes played Daalberg received a pass from Rio Beach, produced a lightning turn to escape the last defender, and sprinted clear before steering the ball past home keeper Reece Mallett to get Leverstock off to a fantastic start. Leverstock had much the better of the game in the early stages and had chances to increase their lead. In the 13th minute a free kick from Dan Pett was met with a glancing header from Ethan Mooney at the near post which drifted just wide of the far post. A minute later Rawn Seale was through on goal but his early shot was pulled wide of the target. On 22 minutes Pett floated another free kick into the box. A backwards header from Dan Weeks was parried by Mallett and Kian Wilkes’ effort from the rebound was blocked. The chances continued to come. On 28 minutes a cross from Rio Beach almost produced an own goal as defender Ano Mano chested the ball inches wide of the post. A minute later Beach had an effort from a free kick outside the box which was awkwardly beaten away by Mallett with his legs. On 32 minutes a pass from Seale put Mooney through, but again his eventual shot was off target. Having failed to increase their lead, the Green side were on the back foot for the final ten minutes of the half as Harefield pushed forward, but were unable to produce an effort to trouble Alfie Bonfield. Leverstock continued to play well in the second half. Two minutes in a pass from Beach gave Seale a run at goal, but he was foiled by a challenge from Mallett on the edge of the box. On the hour Seale had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for a foul on Mallett. In the 69th minute a long ball out of defence from Scott McGleish found Seale on the edge of the box, and Seale took the ball past Mallett, but with the angle narrowing his effort at goal went over the bar. There was a rare scare at the other end in the 75th minute when an overhead kick from Zak Jackson struck the post, but Leverstock continued to dominate. Two minutes later Mooney was clean through on goal but was pulled back by substitute Luke Simpson. It looked like a clear case of a red card for Simpson, who had only been on the pitch for two minutes, but the result was only a yellow card and the resulting free kick was hit over the bar. There was yet another chance in the 82nd minute. A square ball from Ollie Cox found Seale, who was brought down in the box by Simpson. The referee awarded the penalty, but as Wilkes stepped up to take the spot kick, Mallett guessed the right way and dived to turn the ball round the post. Three minutes later there was another poor tackle from Paul Underwood which brought down Nagheeb Ibrahim just outside the box, and again the verdict was only a yellow card. However, after Ibrahim had received treatment, Cox stepped up to take the resulting free kick. Cox’s effort was straight at Mallett, but the keeper failed to hold onto the ball, and Seale followed in to net the rebound for the decisive second goal, one that was very much deserved for Seale’s tireless performance. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Dunstable Town 2 Leverstock Green 1 Tuesday 26th March 2022 Leverstock Green staged a late comeback against Dunstable Town, but it wasn’t enough to pull back the two goals they had conceded earlier in the match. It was another match played in difficult conditions, despite the sunny weather, as the pitch was hard and there was still an awkward wind blowing down the pitch, and a game of few chances that never really got going. Fergus Moore made a few changes to the side which won the cup tie at Harefield in midweek, and his side made a strong start to the game. In the 5th minute Ollie Cox had an ambitious effort from near the halfway line which flew only just over the bar. A minute later Cox had another effort at goal from just outside the box which went wide. In the 8th minute a long ball out of defence from Nagheeb Ibrahim found Lewis Collins, who had a run at goal but hit his eventual shot over the bar. Two minutes later two Dunstable defenders got in a tangle with each other on the edge of their own box. Ibrahim picked up the loose ball but hit his shot inches wide. The game became scrappy after that, with few chances being created. On 27 minutes Dunstable went close when a header from a corner was headed off the line by Brad Robinson. Four minutes later Dunstable took the lead when Daniel Trif got to the bye-line and pulled the ball back for Remell Stirling to sidefoot home from close range. The second half saw even less goalmouth action than the first, with the game becoming disjointed due to frequent stoppages. After three substitutions and a change of shape Leverstock started to come back into the game in the closing stages, with Ethan Mooney going close to an equaliser on 81 minutes with a volley from the edge of the box that went just over the bar. Dunstable were denied a second goal in the 82nd minute when Alfie Bonfield came off his line to save from Terrence Muchineripi, who was clean through. However, a minute later they did add a second goal when Dylan Baker got on the end of a cross from Trif with a header that looped over Bonfield, although there was a feeling that Baker had pushed a defender out of the way before the header. Leverstock got a lifeline back into the game in the 89th minute when Ibrahim was brought down in the box, and the referee awarded the penalty. Mooney was successful with his spot kick to pull the score back to 2-1. During a lengthy period of stoppage time the home side had chances to make the game safe through Kelvin Osei-Addo, but his first effort was wide and his second was saved by Bonfield. In the sixth minute of stoppage time a foul on Mooney just outside the box gave Leverstock a free kick in a dangerous position and a chance to snatch a point, but Ibrahim’s effort was blocked by the wall and the chance went away. Leverstock Green (0) 1 (Mooney 89 pen) 1. Alfie Bonfield, 2. Jack Allen, 3. Brad Robinson, 4. Dan Weeks, 5. Paul Marks, 6. Ryan Carruthers (15. Rawn Seale 60 mins), 7. Lewis Collins (12. Ethan Mooney 79 mins), 8. Ollie Cox (14. Dan Pett 69 mins), 9. Adam Page, 10. Nagheeb Ibrahim, 11. Elgeniy Daalberg. Subs not used: 16. Kian Wilkes, 18. Scott McGleish.

Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Gladwish Challenge Trophy Hadley 2 Leverstock Green 2 Tuesday 29th March 2022 Leverstock Green’s run in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy ended at the quarter-final stage as they were beaten in a penalty shoot out by Hadley after conceding an equaliser in stoppage time. It was a great second half display by the Green side as they came back from a goal down at half time to lead 2-1, but couldn’t hold on for a deserved win. With regular keeper Alfie Bonfield rested due to an injury, under-18 keeper Oscar Frost came in for his second first team appearance of the season, and turned in an excellent display. In the 5th minute Frost pulled off a good save to keep out a header from Aaron Scott. Leverstock had a chance from a free kick just outside the box in the 15th minute, but Kian Wilkes’ effort went over the bar. Seven minutes later a cross from Rio Beach found Sean Walsh, who took the ball down well, but didn’t get hold of his shot properly. In the 26th minute Hadley had an effort from Jordan Edwards cleared off the line, and three minutes later Sam Edwards hit a free kick just wide. Hadley went in front in the 32nd minute when Solomon Ofori broke clear and ran on to slot the ball past Frost. Ofori was close to a second on 37 minutes but his shot hit the bar. Hadley went into the break leading 1-0 but Leverstock produced a great response in the second half. On 55 minutes a shot from Dan Pett was cleared off the line. Two minutes later Beach floated a free kick into the sixyard box and Rawn Seale connected with a powerful header to level the scores at 1-1. In the 69th minute a flick from Walsh gave Seale the chance to run into the box, where he was brought down by a challenge from Scott. Despite the protests of the Hadley players, the referee awarded the penalty, and Ethan Mooney netted his second spot kick in successive games to put Leverstock in front at 2-1. Leverstock had a great chance to stretch their lead in the 78th minute when a neat pass from Mooney put Seale through on goal, but his shot went just over the bar. As the clock ticked into stoppage time Leverstock were still in the lead, but a Hadley cross from the left caused problems inside the Green box, and substitute Peter Rosemin smashed home a shot to level the scores at 2-2. Even then Leverstock could have won the game further into stoppage time, but a header from Wilkes was saved. With the scores level at 2-2 at full time, the game went into a penalty shoot out, and it didn’t get off to a great start for Leverstock with Pett’s kick being saved, while Sam Edwards scored Hadley’s first kick. Mooney levelled the scores at 1-1, and then Frost produced a great save to keep out Billy Baird’s second kick for Hadley. However, Leverstock’s third kick, from Rio Beach, struck the underside of the bar and bounced away from goal, allowing Hadley to go back in front through Billy Hayes. Wilkes and Nagheeb Ibrahim were successful with Leverstock’s remaining kicks, but Rosemin and Ed Davis were also on target for Hadley as they won the shootout 4-3. Risborough Rangers FC Club History

Risborough Rangers Football Club started in 1970 as a team of 12-year olds who wanted to play competitive football. The main motivators were Life Presidents Tony Elsey and Derek Wallace. Derek was instrumental in forming the Wycombe Star League that now provides football for hundreds of youngsters in the Wycombe area, and Risborough Rangers currently have teams at all ages ranging from the Under 10 to Under 16 playing in this league. In the 1975/76 season, the previous years Under 16's went into the Wycombe & District League as a men's team, and in their second season in adult football won the 3rd Division. Unfortunately, the team then folded, after which the club provided only boy's football until the Under 16's of 1979/80, having won the United-Carr Cup, went into the Reading Youth League for two seasons, and then the Wycombe & District League. They won promotion in successive seasons and were followed two years later by the following years Under 16's as a reserve team, who emulated the feats of their predecessor, ending up in the Ercol Senior League and the FA Walters Premier League consecutively. At around this time, Rangers moved to 'Windsors', their current ground. 'Windsors' had been the home of the now defunct Princes Risborough Town FC who were one of the founder members of the Hellenic league in 1953. Within several years, club members had managed to improve the ground substantially by building the clubhouse. In 1989 Risborough accepted an invitation to join the South Midlands League Division 1. In the first two seasons the club found the level difficult and finished second from the bottom and therefore had to apply for re-election. The 1991/92 season saw a great improvement when Risborough finished in 8th position whilst also celebrating its 21st anniversary. In the 1994/95 season, they were promoted to the newly formed Senior Division, after finishing 4th under the management of Frank Carter and they consolidated with a mid-table position in the next season. In the mid-90s, Bob Rayner became manager for the first time and saw the establishment of a sound youth policy with an Under 18's team in the Wycombe & South Bucks Youth League. After a reasonably successful spell, in which the club reached the semi-final of the Senior Division Cup and the quarter final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy, Bob was offered the job of Brackley Town manager in the Southern league and took the opportunity to test himself at a higher level. After Bob left at the start of the 1998/99 season, former assistant Jon Franklin took over as manager and maintained a consistent level of football at the club. After Jon’s' departure, the club began to struggle and were eventually relegated to Division Two.

In 2005, chairman Richard Woodward persuaded Bob Rayner to return to the club following his departure from Thame United. Finishing fourth in his first two seasons back and just missing out on the runners up spot in the final game in the second season, Bob has had to rebuild his side from the Rangers junior ranks. He has patiently waited for his young side to blossom and the patience began to pay off in the 2010/11 season when Rangers achieved a fifth-place finish and reached the semi-final of the Challenge Trophy, losing 2-0 to the eventual winner and Premier Division champions, Chalfont St Peter. On route to the semi-final, Rangers beat four teams from divisions above them including division one champions Berkhamsted Town. The 2011/12 season was Risborough's best season of late with a late charge securing runners up spot in the league, and a first cup final reached in over 20 years, losing the Anagram Records Trophy final 10 to Baldock Town of the Hertfordshire County Senior League. The next season brought two good cup runs. Risborough's progress in the Anagram Record's Trophy was halted in the Semi Final by Baldock Town. The rematch of the previous season’s final ended up with the same score line as Baldock went on to defend the trophy. A second cup final in two years was achieved via the Division 2 cup, although the prospect of lifting the cup once again alluded Rangers, this time losing 2 nil to Aston Clinton. A league finish of fourth was achieved, and with the hard work off the pitch, including securing the funding for floodlights which were erected in time for the 2012/13 season. In 2016 Risborough finally won some silverware, after several near misses over the last few years. The Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup was claimed after a 2-1 AET win over United Counties League Olney Town. 2016/17 season saw Bob Rayner retire and his son Jamie take charge saw the club finish in a creditable 6th position and reach the semi-finals of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup before losing on penalties to eventual winners Woodley United. The 2017/8 season started with some promise but sadly this didn’t last with the club finishing in 8th place, the highlight of the campaign, however, was a run in the Challenge Trophy which included victories over Premier Division sides Leighton Town, Oxhey Jets, Edgware Town and London Colney, but alas were beaten 3-1 in the Final by fellow Division One side Broadfields United at Colney Heath. In October 2018 then current manager Jamie Rayner decided to step down from his position because of work commitments. The Club advertised the position and after a healthy response, the Board appointed the former Hemel Hempstead Town, Arlesey Town, Leighton Town Aylesbury United, Aylesbury FC boss Mark Eaton as their new man. When Eaton took over the club were 19th in Division One and a massive negative goal difference but come the end of the season Rangers finished in 7th spot with a positive goal difference as the season was turn on it’s head. The season ended though with some silverware when London Lions were defeated 2-0 in the final of the Spartan South Midlands League Division One Cup, which was played at Leverstock Green. Because of the on-going re-construction of the non-league system the club made a lateral movement to the Hellenic League Division One East from the Spartan for the start of the 2019/20 season. The 2019/20 season saw Rangers unbeaten and top the league by 12 points with a game in hand over 2nd place Abingdon United after playing 23 games out of the full 32. The COVID pandemic put an end to any hopes of promotion to step 5 for the first time in the clubs history however as the season was officially voided. However, in 2021 the club were promoted to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League based on their results in the abandoned 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons.

Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Leighton Town 1 Leverstock Green 1 Tuesday 5th April 2022 Leverstock Green scored a late equaliser to rescue a well-deserved point from Tuesday night’s trip to Leighton Town. It was the second game in charge of Leighton for former Green skipper Lee Bircham, and there were some familiar faces on the pitch for Leighton as well. Leverstock had the ball in the net with only a minute played, but Rawn Seale’s celebrations were cut short by the offside flag. In the 18th minute Leighton were almost gifted a goal as Scott McGleish’s header back to Alfie Bonfield was intercepted, but the resulting shot went wide. Five minutes later a slip from Ollie Cox let Lewis Toomey through to take the ball past Bonfield, but McGleish was there to clear the shot off the line. Leighton went close again in the 26th minute when Duncan Culley shot over the bar from a narrow angle after a slick-passing move. On 36 minutes the action was at the other end as Seale took the ball round home keeper Connor Coulson, but his shot from a narrow angle was cleared from the six-yard box. Two minutes later some great footwork from Seale created a shooting opportunity from the edge of the box, but Coulson produced a great save to turn the shot away. The game was still goalless at half time, and early in the second half Leverstock were forced into the first of three changes as McGleish was replaced by Paul Marks. Leighton put the Green goal under pressure in the early stages of the half. Bonfield produced a good save in the 48th minute to turn a shot round the post, but the home side took the lead in the 53rd minute when former Green player Bill Morgan came in at the far post to head home a corner. Skipper Dan Weeks was forced off with an injury to be replaced by Jack Allen just before the hour, and Elgeniy Daalberg replaced Ryan Carruthers soon after. There were few chances for either side as the game moved into the last ten minutes with Leighton still a goal up. On 82 minutes Leverstock had a chance when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box, but Rio Beach’s effort flew just over the bar. However, a minute later a ball from the back put Seale clean through. Coulson came off his line, but Seale chipped the ball over him, then ran on to meet the bouncing ball and apply the final touch to put it into the net for the equaliser. A point was the least that Fergus Moore’s side deserved for a very solid performance against a top four side, and they face another of the topsides on Saturday when Risborough Rangers are the visitors to Pancake Lane. THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE

Saturday 2nd April SATURDAY HEADLINES Saturday brought about 74 goals from the 23 games (an average of 3.22 per game). Derek Asamoah (New Salamis) led the way with four goals while Ollie Lawford (Aylesbury Vale Dynamos), Solomon Ofori (Hadley) and Scott Joseph (Bedford) all netted hat tricks. PREMIER DIVISION Premier Division table toppers New Salamis were the day’s biggest winners with a 9-0 home win against Harefield United, the hosts falling one short of their best SSML result back in September while for the visitors it was their heaviest SSML defeat since losing 1-9 against Hertford Town in January 2016. Risborough Rangers remain three points behind with two games in hand after they overcame a battling Baldock Town by the odd goal in three at home, this after going 1-0 up after just 33 seconds. Hadley remain third following their 3-1 home success against Milton Keynes Irish, the hosts recovering from being reduced to ten men and going a goal down shortly after the re-start thanks to the ‘perfect’ half-trick from Solomon Ofori, one with his head, one with the right foot and the other with the left foot. At the other end of the table Holmer Green climbed out of the bottom two with a 2-1 home success against Dunstable Town and as a result sent London Colney into the drop zone after their dismal run of defeats continued with a 1-3 loss at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, this after leading at the interval. Elsewhere Broadfields United were beaten 0-2 by visiting Harpenden Town while yet another large crowd at Bell Close (355) saw Leighton Town enjoy a 2-0 success against Flackwell Heath thanks to a brace from new signing Duncan Culley. The day’s other Premier Division saw Oxhey Jets draw 1-1 at Arlesey Town while Ardley United edged out Tring Athletic by the odd goal in three in Hertfordshire. DIVISION ONE The Match of the Day in Division One saw second placed Winslow United hosting third placed Shefford Town & Campton, the game began with the hosts six points ahead and ended with the deficit halved with the visitors winning by a solitary first half penalty. Ampthill Town and Northampton Sileby Rangers maintained their play-off spots with away wins, Town winning 1-0 at struggling Kidlington Reserves while Rangers were 3-0 winners at Langford. At the other end of the standings bottom club Irchester United were beaten 0-3 at home by play-off chasing Wellingborough Whitworth while second bottom Burton Park Wanderers went down by the odd goal in three by London Tigers and more from this later in the ramblings. Elsewhere Amersham Town recorded a 2-1 home success against Letchworth Garden City Eagles to surely kill off any faint fears of the drop while Bedford kept up their outside hopes of the play-offs with a 4-0 success at Buckingham Athletic. The day’s other Division One action saw Rushden & Higham

United drawing 1-1 at Penn & Tylers Green while Long Crendon enjoyed a 4-1 success at Thame United Reserves. DIVISION TWO Division Two leaders Old Bradwell United took a step closer to the title with a 2-0 win in the ‘Bradwell Derby’, two goals from Scott Valentine were enough for the visitors to secure the points and bragging rights at New Bradwell St Peter while second placed Bovingdon were held to a goalless draw by hosts Codicote. Aston Clinton were the Division’s biggest winners as they swept aside visiting The 61FC (Luton) 7-1. Elsewhere Sarratt edged out visiting Berkhamsted Raiders by the odd goal in three while Totternhoe made it four successive wins (two in the league and two in the cup) with a 4-0 success over visiting Buckingham United. AND FINALLY COMMITTEE AWAY DAYS League Board member, Bob Flight, travelled to Burton Park Wanderers to present their February Respect Award which rewarded their much improved Respect behaviour during 2022 (see picture below). The home team hosted visitors London Tigers but narrowly lost out by the odd goal in three. The match started in bright sunshine but it was a very cold day in Northants. Tigers began well and they dominated the first half but had to wait until 30 minutes before they managed to score the opening goal. Just before half time, Burton thought that they had equalised, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside. The home side were quickly two goals down at the start of the second half as a clumsy challenge resulted in a penalty on just 50 minutes which Tigers dispatched with ease. However, Burton improved in the second half and scored the goal of the game when Alex Durance scored from 25 yards with a great shot that went into the Tigers net off the underside of the crossbar. Burton pressed forward in search of another goal and Tigers were not helped when they lost a player to a head injury and as they had used all their subs, had to play out the last ten minutes of the game with ten players. But despite a couple of scares, Tigers held on for victory. This result leaves Burton in the relegation zone and improves Tigers chances of staying up. The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 111 votes cast is: New Salamis 44.1% Totternhoe 29.7% Aston Clinton 19.8% Bedford 6.4% Don’t forget that every Sunday afternoon the Non-League Show on Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds & Bucks), a show all about local non-league football. VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB 2021-22 Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Alan Brett, Colin Bull, Bill Dawes, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Phil Gray, P Isaacs, Tony Smart, Roger Stokes and Sue Hollick As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements. Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place.

Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons. At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs. This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted. The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
