Green 3 Thursday 18th August 2022

On 69 minutes, however, Leverstock found the net again from another free kick. This time the kick was near the corner flag, and Mohammed floated the ball into the six yard box perfectly for Dan Payne to get on the end of it with a header to put his side in front for the first time in the game.

There was furious pressure from the Berko side over the closing minutes and more than ten minutes of stoppage time, but the Green defence held their composure to hold on for an impressive win. Their reward is a home tie against Langley F.C. in the next round on Thursday 1st September.

Leverstock Green 3 (Hobbs 44, Roberts 55, Payne 69)

Berkhamsted 2 Leverstock

Leverstock Green’s under 18s got their competitive season off to a fantastic start as they twice came from behind to beat neighbours Berkhamsted in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Youth Cup. There were some early chances for the Green side. In the 4th minute a pass from Charlie Hobbs set up a great chance for Ed Thackeray, but his shot was saved by the leg of home keeper James Hall. Three minutes later Kai Sullivan had a clear shot from the edge of the box but it went inches over the bar. On 12 minutes Callum Moore had at attempt at goal but it went wide. It looked as though those missed chances could prove costly when Berko took the lead on the break in the 15th minute. Alfie Roffey intercepted a cross-field pass and ran towards goal before squaring for Godfrey Opoku to shoot home the opening goal. Opoku went close with another shot shortly afterwards, but for the remainder of the half the game went a little scrappy and niggly, with a yellow card being shown to one player from each side. A minute before the break Leverstock got back into the game through a somewhat fortuitous goal. From a free kick over 40 yards from goal, Charlie Hobbs floated the ball into the box. It should have been an easy take for keeper Hall, but the ball went through his hands and straight into the net to level the scores at 1 1.

However, there was yet more to come before half time, as in the second minute of stoppage time Berko went back in front through former Green player Nana Yeboah, who slotted home a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. A change at half time saw Archie Roberts replace Kai Sullivan, and ten minutes into the second half it was Roberts who brought Leverstock back level again as Hall again failed to cover himself in glory from a free kick. The kick was 30 yards out and to the left of the penalty area. Roberts floated his shot towards the top corner, and although Hall got a hand to it, he couldn’t keep it from going into the net.

Shortly afterwards there was a lengthy stoppage for treatment to Berko’s Jake McGregor, who eventually had to be stretchered off. Once the game resumed, Leverstock went close to going in front from a goalmouth scramble but neither Roberts nor Bilal Mohammed could force the ball home.

Mitchell-Gears was denied by Simson again in the 20th minute as his shot was turned around the post. Four minutes later a cross from Robinson found Blunden in the box, but he couldn’t quite work a shooting position and ended up hitting the ball across the face of goal with no one there to apply the finishing touch. Ibrahim Nagheeb was next to have a shot at goal on 30 minutes, with a curling effort that went a yard wide. Two minutes later at the other end Akwasi Bronyan had another great chance but hit the ball straight at Josh Mollison from close range. On 34 minutes Lewis Collins had a run into the box but put the b all over the bar from a narrow angle. Half time was reached with the game goalless and Leverstock having been frustrated by some strong defending from the visitors. The breakthrough finally came five minutes into the second half. Nagheeb floated a corner t o the back post, where Mitchell Gears headed it back across goal, and Alvin Kyemereh was there to head home his second goal in four days to put Leverstock into a 1 0 lead. Leverstock continued to push forward, with Collins hitting a shot just wide after a solo run on 52 minutes, and Mitchell Gears heading wide from a Luke Beckwith cross two minutes later. In the 58th minute Colney had a free kick in a dangerous position, but Pijus Montvydas shot wide of the target. There were more chances for the Green side. On 71 minutes a great pass from Robinson put Blunden through, but his shot was saved by Simson. Three minutes later Collins hit a shot which Simson couldn’t hold onto, but he was able to smother Blunden’s effort from the rebound. In stoppage time a pass from Blunden gave Sean Walsh a run at goal, but instead of shooting Walsh opted to play a square pass to Elgeniy Daalberg, who was offside.Thegame threatened to boil over during stoppage time, with yellow cards shown to both sides, but Leverstock held ou t for the win, which still leaves them in third place in the table, behind the other two teams with 100% records on goal difference. They now take a break from league action to focus on Saturday’s FA Cup tie against St Panteleimon. Leverstock Green (0) 1 (Kyemereh 50) 1. Josh Mollison, 2. Brad Robinson, 3. Rio Beach, 4. Alan Lee Reporting SSML Premier Division

Leverstock Green 1

London Colney 0 Tuesday 16th August 2022

Leverstock Green’s winning start continued, as a single goal from Alvin Kyemereh was enough for a hard fought 1 0 home win over a good London Colney side on a night that saw some much needed rain at the Lords Builders Merchants Stadium. Fergus Moore’s side have still not conceded a goal in a competitive match, and they are the last remaining side in the SSML Premier Division to have not conceded.Leverstock had the best of the early play, with Brad Robinson sending over an excellent cross to the far post in the 4th minute which was headed wide by George Mitchell Gears. Man of the Match Mitchell Gears was unlucky in the 15th minute as he struck a fierce shot from 20 yards which was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Colney keeper Harvey Simson, and the rebound went just over the head of Chris Blunden. Two minutes later it was the visitors’ turn to be unlucky as a shot from Patrick Akwasi Bronyan struck the base of the post.

PREMIER DIVISION Title favourites Leighton Town are the early pace setters as they made it two wins from two with a 2 0 success at London Colney. Joining Leighton with two wins from two are Shefford Town & Campton (2 1 winners against visiting St Panteleimon) and Leverstock Green who won 2 0 on the road at Baldock Town. The fore mentioned Baldock along with their landlords Arlesey Town remain the only two top flight clubs looking for their first points of the new campaign, Arlesey going down by the odd goal in three at Colney Heath. Harpenden Town were surprisingly beaten at home by Crawley Green, the visitors winning 2 1 while Aylesbury Vale Dynamos again found first half football their undoing as they failed to overturn a 0 3 deficit as they were beaten by the odd goal in five at Stotfold. Ardley United drew 1 1 at home against Potton United despite having two players sent off late in the game while Risborough Rangers remain goalless this campaign although Saturday saw them gain a point at home against Hoddesdon Town. Elsew here Tring Athletic drew 2 2 at Dunstable Town and it was the same score line as Biggleswade United were held at home by Cockfosters.

DIVISION ONE Real Bedford FC climbed to the top of the standings with a 7 1 win at Buckingham Athletic (more on this later in the ramblings) while hot in their heels are Moulton FC who maintained their 100% start to the season with a 6 0 home success against Thame United Reserves (again more on this later in the ramblings). Joining them on maximum points after two games are Ampthill Town, Northampton Sileby Rangers and Amersham Town, the ‘Amps’ defeating visiting Wellingborough Whitworth 3 1, Sileby won 5 2 at Holmer Green while Amersham enjoyed a 4 2 success at Raunds Town. At the other end of the table five clubs are pointless, joining the fore mentioned Thame, Buckingham, Holmer and Whitworth are Burton Park Wanderers who went down to a 1 2 defeat at London Tigers. COMMITTEE AWAYDAYS

SSMFL Board & Committee member Dave Henman was at Moulton FC and pens the following report: I made my first ever visit to Moulton for their first home game in the Spartan South Midlands League basically to welcome them to our League. Although this is a 3 or 4 pitch it is a very impressive set up with covered accommodation situated by the halfway line. The pitch is fully utilised by their numerous junior sides, plus walking football activities. They have made several extensions to their clubhouse and are more than ready to make the step up from the Northants Combination. Allied to that they have a healthy committee and a bunch of willing helpers so it’s all systems go. They were also impressive on the field, as well as off it. The first goal after 8 minutes was a very unfortunate own goal when the centre half diverted a low cross into his own goal when trying to clear a low hard cross. Further goals followed in the first half through SHAD REZA (15) and JOEY EVANS (23, 32 and 44). Whilst there were a couple of good shots two goals were made out of nothing but pure determination to get the ball into the net. The second half was understandably a lower tempo as the game was already won. Moulton bought on all 5 subs at various times in the second half whilst Thame bought on their one and only sub. Whilst the result was a foregone conclusion by half time Thame kept on trying to play football, never gave up, never resorted to “dubious“ tactics, and neither side gave the referee Jakob Gierczyk any hassle. SHAD REZA completed the scoring after the break. Despite conceding 6 goals Thames’ keeper Mikolaj Thompson had a very good game. All in all an entertaining game, played in very trying conditions so credit to all involved. And that’ it!

SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Buckingham Athletic and pens the following report: Last Saturday, with temperatures in the mid thirties, Buckingham Athletic hosted ambitious Real Bedford at Stratford fields. The pitch was well presented although the standard of the football was very average. But Bedford overwhelmed Athletic and ran out worthy winners by 7 goals to 1. It started well for the home team as they scored on 20 minutes through Rory Busby following a poor defence lapse by Bedford. But Bedford soon equalised through Kevin Owusu on 27 minutes. They went further ahead from the penalty spot as Dan Walker scored a couple of minutes later. Athletic were further undone right on half time by a ball that was missed by all the defenders which allowed Walker to run though and score. Any hope by Athletic to get back into the game was destroyed by Bedford who scored three quick goals just into the second half. But to their credit Athletic fought hard during the second half but were once again victim of another Bedford goal by Owusu just before the final whistle. Congratulations must go to all the players and match officials who endured the heat to provide a game for the spectators to enjoy. Whilst this was a stroll in the park for Bedford, they will face much tougher opposition in their bid for promotion this season.

Season’s Highest Attendances to date (Premier Division Clubs): 323 Leighton Town v Stotfold, 322 Aylesbury Vale Dynamos v Leighton Town and 283 Leighton Town v Baldock Town (FA Cup).

The midweek Premier Division action saw no changes at either end of the standings, leaders Leighton Town enjoyed a 3 1 win at neighbouring Aylesbury Vale Dynamos with a healthy crowd of 322 in attendance, second placed Shefford Town & Campton also enjoyed an away trip with a 4 2 win at Biggleswade United, the only scare coming in the closing minutes when home team secretary Tracey James had to dig deep into her handbag to find a shilling for the meter to prevent a floodlight failure while third placed Leverstock Green were made to work hard for their solitary goal success by visiting London Colney. With neither of the bottom two in action the main change at that end of the table saw Risborough Rangers slip to third bottom after losing 2 5 at a rampant Ardley United side with the only comfort for the visitors being they had finally broken their goalscoring drought. Elsewhere on Tuesday night Tring Athletic moved up to fourth following a 1 0 home success against Colney Heath while the game between Stotfold and visiting Potton United finish goalless. The Wednesday night action saw a last gasp goal earn Hoddesdon Town a 2-2 draw at St Panteleimon. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below.

DeanProfileBradford When did you join LGFC and what role? I joined in July 2019 as the General Club Secretary Previous Clubs/Positions As a player at Bognor Regis Town, Lancing and Wick. As a manager at the same current level as Levy with Lancing, Wick, and Haywards Heath Town. After moving north of the river I was a Director at Berkhamsted in the Spartan and Southern Leagues and the Youth Team Secretary culminating in the under 16s winning the treble of the Herts County Cup, EJA League, and EJA Cup. Honours Sussex County League (now Southern Combination) Runners Up, Young Player of the Year at Bognor Regis Town and others as a Manager/Director at the clubs mentioned above. Describe your current role? I am one of the 6 officers of Leverstock Green FC and specifically the General Club Secretary of the first team, under 18s and under 15s. I am also the overly excitable voice over the tannoy on match days! What is your favourite football team? Leverstock Green (obviously) and Tottenham (for my sins) although Watford are fast coming up the rails as I am really falling out of love of hugely financially owned Premier League clubs! Who is your favourite player? I genuinely love them all but I would have to say Harry Bonner. I was his Youth Team Secretary since he was 13 so to see him playing now in our first team fills me with great pride and he should be an inspiration for all our under 18s and under 15s. Got to know the family well in that time too and they are great! What is your proudest moment in football? Scoring in the FA Cup 1st Round Proper in front of 4,000 home fans as a 16 year old for Bognor Regis Town and becoming an instant star at school after years of just being a spotty teenager! If you can chose what would like to be in the football world? I'm in my dream job to be fair. I love being a club secretary of a club I live less than a mile from and feel I am in some way contributing to the success and growth of what is an amazing club surrounded by fantastic people on and off the pitch. What does no one know about you? I ran the London Marathon in 2016. Proof you don’t have to be skinny to run 26.2 miles! What is your nickname? Deano by everyone except work but at school it was Tigger because I was always so happy, positive and excitable which hopefully people still think I am as I see these as good traits! What is the best thing about LGFC? Where do I start? My fellow officers, Emma, Jamie, Tony, Alan and Bill are an absolute joy to work with on literally a daily basis as are our wonderful committee members and volunteers that I feel run the best club at step 5 and have yet to have been proved wrong. Then there are the management teams and players of all 3 clubs that I'm extremely proud of. At the time of writing a special shout out to Tony who has also secured the lease on Pancake Lane until at least 2047 which would take us beyond our 150th anniversary as a club.

There was almost a second goal five minutes into the second half when Sadler hit a fierce shot from distance, which the keeper did well to tip over the bar. However, over the last half-hour of the game the long season started to take its toll on the Leverstock side, as they looked out on their feet. The side had to dig very deep under constant pressure from the Welwyn side, which had a couple of agonising near misses. Green keeper Freddie Burroughs was very impressive, often having to come off his line to thwart breakaways from the Welwyn side.

Wednesday 11th May vs. Welwyn Garden City

The Leverstock side earned the trophy with a hard fought 1 0 win over Welwyn Garden City U15 in Wednesday night’s final played at Ware F.C.

There were early chances for the Green side, with Joe Sadler’s free kick bringing a great save out of the WGC keeper on 12 minutes, and Shay Kelly heading over the bar from the resulting corner. In the 16th minute Lucas Georgiou set up a chance for Josh Weidner, but he shot wide.

A long period of stoppage time saw several Leverstock players go down suffering with cramp, but they held out until the end to claim a well deserved trophy at the end of a season where they were just piped by Berkhamsted to the U15 Brown Division title.

EJA Peter Peters Cup Final

The goal came in the 30th minute, as Georgiou got on the end of a free kick with a looping header that came down off the bar. A defender tried to clear off the line but the linesman flagged to indicate that the ball had crossed the line.

The Under-15s ended their season with a deserved trophy as they lifted the EJA Peter Peters Cup on Wednesday night.

Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Colin Bull, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Roger Stokes As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements. Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place. VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB 2022 -23 Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons. At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter Step Play Offs. This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted. The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
