Green Shirts, Green Shorts & Socks White Shirts, Blue Shorts & SocksLeverstock Green Football Club is sorry to announce the passing of Steve Robinson. We send our sincere condolences to Steve’s wife Lyn and daughters Fiona and Emma.
Steve joined the Club in the early 1960’s and played for the First Team throughout that decade and into the ‘70’s. He played with other ‘notable characters’ Pete Metcalfe, Rod Saville, Dave Taylor, and many others. There is a Club photograph from 1964 with Steve alongside his colleagues. A typical example of the camaraderie at that time: Steve was down with a hurt knee, on came Charlie Rowe (trainer), “where’s it hurt Steve”? “ere” says Steve, Charlie promptly whopped the sponge on Steve’s ear!!
He admirably filled the role of Secretary from the mid ‘70’s into the 1980’s. During that time, he produced an excellent ‘book’ of the Club’s playing record of the ‘modern era’, remembering we were formed in 1895.
Steve was the usual ‘football in winter / cricket in summer’ person. One of his favourite venues was Fenners at Cambridge University for the season’s opening fixture. Usually accompanied by John Baldry, who was Treasurer at that time, they would also travel to Northampton and to Lords on many occasions.
It was Steve who researched and put together the original application for our floodlights, surviving a Public Hearing in the Village Hall and a seven-year wait, approval was given 1998/99.
A solid Club Man and an honest ‘fair play’ person, he will be missed but remembered down Pancake Lane. Bill Dawes
Steve’s funeral is Monday 11th March @ 3:30PM.
It is at Hemel Hempstead Crematorium, then at Leverstock Green Cricket Club.
We are taking a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination in football. We’re calling on clubs and leagues like your own to report hate, prejudice or discrimination whenever you see it or hear it.
For those people who behave in a racist, sexist or homophobic way, the message is clear. Enough is Enough.
When we know it has happened, we can take the actions needed to remove discriminatory behaviour. We'll be doing so through a range of punishments:
• Players will be removed from play and suspended.
• Teams can have points deducted.
• Grounds can be closed for repeat offenders.
Together we can end hate in football.
Spread the word that discrimination of all forms will be punished. Share with your welfare officers, league and club officials, and everyone across your league and clubs.
We want everyone across grassroots football to know...
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. TELL US, WE’LL TACKLE IT.

Leverstock Green got back to winning ways with a hard-fought win against Arlesey Town in Tuesday night’s SSML Premier Division game. As in the first game against Arlesey back in January, Leverstock had to come from behind to get their win.
It was a game of few clear-cut chances for either side. After an even opening to the game, it was Arlesey who took the lead in the 24th minute. Leverstock were caught on the break after giving the ball away, and as Rory Busby chased a ball forward, Josh Bowler came out to intercept, but slipped in the muddy goalmouth. That gave Busby the chance to get to the ball first, and with Bowler stranded, Busby was able to chip the ball over him and find the net.
It was a frustrating half for Leverstock, who were struggling to put together any passing moves, but they got back on level terms in the 36th minute. A cross from the right found Lewis Collins, who laid the ball back to find Ryan Carruthers just outside th e box, and Carruthers took a touch before striking a fierce shot that flew past keeper Ollie Skinner for the equaliser.
Half time was reached with the scores level from the only two efforts on target in the half. Leverstock got their noses in front in the 54th minute with a scrambled goal from a corner. Nat Connolly’s cross found Josh Dooley, whose header was blocked, and Luke Beckwith forced the loose ball home. The second half was as short on chances as the first, with a shot from Rio Beach being tipped over the bar by Skinner in the 66th minute.
Guiseppe Delgaudio came off the bench in the 73rd minute to mark his return to the club he last played for in 2020, having played at Tring in the interim, and there was also a first team debut off the bench for promising Development Team player Schilo Mateta Kanda. Bowler had to deal with an awkward low shot from Bowler in the 88th minute, but the Leverstock defence held firm and there was no repeat of Saturday’s last-gasp disappointment as the Green side held out for the 21 win and three more points to boost their play-off bid.

KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd).
After two weeks in Tanzania, a flame was lit in Derrick’s heart, and he was on a mission to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed children playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags. Twenty-one years on, KitAid has lots of volunteers and to date we’ve sent out 900,000+ kits to children and adults in 55 different countries across the world.
If you’d like to support the KitAid cause, the easiest way to donate your unwanted football kit, in order for us to find it a new home.
Alternatively, if you don’t have any unwanted kit, but would still like to support us, we’re very grateful for any donations which will help to fund our annual costs as well as support other partnership charities where possible.
We thank you for all your support.
In working in some of the most under-privileged countries around the world, The Football Association is no stranger to seeing the impact the donation of something as simple as a shirt or a pair of shorts can make. KitAid has brought an enormous amount of pleasure and enjoyment to young and old alike through the gift of football kit and has shared the spirit of British clubs and the England team with communities in all corners of the globe. We are proud to be associated with KitAid and wish them all the best in their endeavours for the years to come.
Jane Bateman, Head of International Relations, The Football AssociationThe club was founded as Chenecks FC in 1946 under the guidance of well-known Coroner Sergeant of the Borough Police, George Lloyd. The club was formed to enable boys at the rugby playing Northampton Grammar School to play football. The club's unusual name is derived from the School Houses, Chipsey, Spencer, Beckett, and St Crispins.
The club became members of the Northampton Minor League playing at Under 17 level, and when the team were too old for youth football the club joined the Northampton Town League in 1950, playing at Abington Park. In 1960 the Old Northamptonians Association invited the club to become one of their sports sections, thus Chenecks became ON Chenecks and relocated to the Billing Road sports ground. They joined the United Counties Football League in 1969, and have had continuous membership ever since, albeit for most of the early years in the lower divisions of the league.
The club has twice won the Division One Championship in 1977-78 and 1979–80 but were denied promotion to the Premier Division due to ground grading criteria as the club were restricted to develop their shared facilities. ON Chenecks beat Tam O'Shanter from Coventry to win the 1985 Daventry Charity Cup final and in 1994 they were Northants Junior Cup runners-up, losing 1-0 to Vanaid. In 1996 they lost 4-0 to Cogenhoe in the Daventry Charity Cup final having beaten Southern League Rothwell Town 1-0 away enroute to the final.
In the 2009–10 season the club won its first major honour under the guidance of Andy Marks when they picked up the Northants Junior Cup with a 1 -0 victory over local rivals Northhampton Silbey Rangers at Nene Park. The 2010–11 season saw rookie manager Graham Cottle accept the vacant position. Under his guidance the club had considerable success, winning the Northants Junior Cup in 2013/14 and 2014/15 and gaining promotion to the top UCL flight for the first time in the club’s history after finishing runners up in 2015/16. The club also participated in a national competition for the first time, defeating Sun Sports 2-1 in the FA Vase.
Under the guidance of Chairman Mr E Slinn, developments have also progressed of the field, with the erection of floodlights, extra seating, pitch barriers etc over the last couple of years which has enabled the club to secure the sufficient ground grading criteria. In 2016/17 as well as participating in UCL Premier Division topflight, the club entered the FA Cup for the first time, losing to Harefield United in a replay. After finishing a highly respectable 12 th position in their first topflight season,
Chenecks had a change in management with highly respected UCL prolific goal scorer Ben Foster taking over the managers hot seat, with a 17th place finish in the 2017-18 season and 15th spot secured in 2018-19. Club Secretary Bryan Lewin picked up the UCL Administrator of the Year Award in 2019. As with all other clubs and leagues, the last two seasons have been affected by
the Covid pandemic, which has seen both campaigns unfinished, although both the First and Reserves did reach the UCL Supplementary Cup finals in 2020-21, with the Reserves defeating Harborough 4-3 after penalty kicks to secure the trophy. In the close season Ben Foster stepped down for personal reasons and has been replaced internally with two of his backroom staff; Lee Burdett and Wayne Richardson promoted as Joint Managers.
After two seasons with Covid restrictions the 2021-22 season saw Chenecks finish second from bottom, despite a strong end to the campaign. As part of the FA’s National League System restructuring, Chenecks relegation saw them placed in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One along with a host of ex-UCL clubs. Last season the club had a new management team, headed by Jamie Forester. The new look side had an excellent campaign finishing just nine points shy of runaway champions Real Bedford but lost out in the final play-off promotion match to Rugby Borough.
1969-70

1972-73 UCL Division Three renamed Division Two, Runner-up (Lost title on goal average)

Leverstock Green were seconds away from collecting another three points, but a scrambled equaliser with the last kick of the game meant they had to settle for a point against Crawley Green. It was a point that the visitors probably deserved with a strong second half display after a first half in which Leverstock were only prevented from establishing a handsome lead by their former goalkeeper Adi Connolly in the Crawley goal. Leverstock were without leading scorer Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica, who was serving the first of a two-game suspension for reaching ten bookings for the season.
Leverstock put pressure on the visitors’ goal early, with Paul Marks going close in the fourth minute, heading into the side netting from Luke Beckwith’s cross. Two minutes later Leverstock had the lead. Nat Connolly laid a pass across the box to Ademide Baruwa, who struck home a fierce shot to score his first ever goal for the club.
The 1-0 lead should have been extended as Leverstock created a host of chances. In the 12th minute a pass from Rawn Seale put Beckwith through on goal, but his shot was way off target, going out for a throw-in. Four minutes later pressure from Seale forced keeper Connolly into an error as he played the ball straight out to Beckwith but recovered to get a boot to Beckwith’s shot and deflect it wide.
In the 24th minute Beckwith was through again but was blocked. Nat Connolly picked up the loose ball and continued through on goal, only to be denied by his namesake in goal. Three minutes later a long kick from Leverstock keeper Josh Bowler put Beckwith in behind the defence again, but again he was denied in a one-onone situation by a save from Connolly. Three minutes before half time there was a warning that Leverstock may rue those missed chances as Joe Hankins was through for Crawley but was denied by a good save from Bowler.
Leverstock started the second half with just the single-goal lead, and the visitors made the most of attacking down the slope in the second half. In the opening minutes of the half, they forced a series of corners which Leverstock did well to defend. However, in the 55th minute they paid the price for giving the ball away on the halfway line. A pass down the right put Jake Cowley in behind Mikey Havill-Tierney, and Cowley raced on towards the Leverstock goal before picking his spot and driving a shot into the corner of the net to level the scores.
Six minutes later Crawley might have gone in front as a cross found Dan Trif with lots of space on the left side of the penalty area, but Bowler produced a great save to turn his shot round the post. That proved important as Leverstock retook the lead in the 72nd minute. Rio Beach got to the bye-line and delivered a cross which Lewis Collins kept alive. The ball dropped for Baruwa, who aimed a dipping shot towards the top corner of the net which went in off the post for his second goal of the game.
Baruwa could have completed a hat-trick in the 82nd minute but again it was great goalkeeping by Connolly that kept his shot out. Crawley kept pushing for an equaliser as the game went into stoppage time, but Leverstock kept them out until the final seconds where they were unable to clear the ball adequately from a goalmouth scramble. Eventually the ball was forced home from a yard out by Cameron Kengne to level the scores, and with the final whistle going immediately after the restart, Leverstock were left deflated at the loss of two crucial points in their play-off push.

There was late heartbreak for the Under-18s, as they came very close to ending the 100% record of Tring Athletic in Thursday night’s SCFYL Corinthian Division game but were beaten by a goal deep into stoppage time.Tring had won their opening four league games, as well as having a long run in the FA Youth Cup, and they took an early lead. However, Stan Kenyon equalised for Leverstock in the 14th minute. The score remained a 1-1 until the 4th minute of stoppage time when Tring scored a winner.
Leverstock Green’s Under-18s earned their fourth league win of the season and their first of 2024 on Thursday night. A second half goal from Oscar Martin earned a point for Leverstock Green U18 against Leighton Town U18 in Thursday night’s SCFYL Corinthian Division game at the Lords Builders Merchants Stadium. Leighton had taken the lead in the 9th minute, but Martin’s 55th minute goal levelled the scores.

Leverstock Green FC was formed around 1895. The first match reports appeared on January 4th 1896 in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers.
The first competitive fixtures were reported during season 1908/1909 when the Club competed in Division Three of the West Herts League. Other clubs competing in the league at that time were: Abbots Langley, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Bushey Heath, Hagden Lane, Ki ngs Langley and Potten End.
The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timb er-built changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960s by the existing brick-built clubhouse and changing rooms.
On the death of the Lord, certain parcels of land, including that on which the Football Club stood, fell to the Crown in lieu of death duties and is administered on its behalf by the Commission for New Towns, who have remained the Clubs landlords since that time, despite two unsuccessful attempts by the Club to buy the freehold.
Leverstock Green FC remained members of the West Herts League until 1954 when it broadened its horizons and successfully applied to join the Herts County League.
By the mid 1970s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail, and the installation of training lights.
The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division – the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years.
In 1991 Leverstock Green FC were accepted into the South Midlands League and had two highly successful seasons in the Premier Division before being forced to drop into the Senior Division, as floodlights were then not available. In 1996 the club finished in runners-up position and the following season were the divisional champions but could not be promoted because floodlights had still not received approval from the Council.
Premier Division status was eventually regained in 2003, and the club is now the longest-standing current member of the division. The club’s highest finish in the Premier Division has been 4th, in season 2010/11, with top six finishes also being recorded in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2008/09.
Season 2010/11 also saw the club’s best ever run in the FA Vase, with wins over Welwyn Garden City, Enfield, Hullbridge Sports, Tunbridge Wells and Bemerton Heath Harlequins before defeat in the Fifth Round against Rye United. The club has twice reached the Third Round of the FA Vase, in seasons 2006/07 and 2018/19.
Leverstock Green FC entered the FA Cup for the first time in 2004, and the club’s best performance has been reaching the Second Round Qualifying, which was achieved in 2014/15, where we were beaten by Staines Town, and in 2018/19 where we were beaten by Dorking Wanderers.
County honours were won in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as the Herts Charity Shield was lifted, and the club were beaten finalists in the Herts Charity Cup in 2011/12. After finishing runners-up four times over the previous 12 years, The West Herts FA St Mary’s Cup was finally lifted for the first time in 2017/18 with victory over Berkhamsted in the final at Vauxhall Road.
Between 2005 and 2015 the club ran a successful Ladies’ Team, which rose from the Beds and Herts League into the Eastern Region Womens League, reaching the Premier Division in 2013. The under-18 side competes in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. The team finished runners-up in their division in seasons 2010/11 and 2014/15, and in 2015/16 they reached the final of both the Brian Hitchings Cup and the Colwyn Cup, losing in both finals to Luton Town Cedars. Many players have made the step up from under-18 level to first team level, and those who have gone on to play much higher up the non-league pyramid include Charlie Gorman (Eastbourne Borough), Luke Warner-Eley (Royston Town, St Albans City) and Jonathan Lacey (Hemel Hempstead Town) who also represented the England non-league side in the Falklands while a Leverstock Green player.
The Pancake Lane ground has seen many improvements due to ever more stringent ground grading requirements. In 2007 the Peter Metcalfe changing rooms were built at a cost of £90,000. 2008 saw the refurbishment of the clubhouse to include new toilets and a new hospitality suite. In 2009 the concrete walkway was completed to cover three sides of the ground and a seated stand accommodating 113 spectators was installed.
Season 2018/19 was one of turmoil and sadness, as long-serving fixture secretary Graham Smart passed away suddenly only weeks after taking on the role of interim chairman. A season which promised so much at the start ended with the club only securing Premier Division safety on the final day.
Emma Smart took over as chairman for season 2019/20, and with a new management team and a new spirit of optimism the club was on course for a safe mid-table finish before the season was brought to a premature end by Covid-19. The management team of Matt Harding and Mick Vipond continued into the 2020/21 season, which again came to a premature end.
For season 2021/22, a new management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Paul Marks was appointed. Fergus and Scott continued through season 2022/23 and won their first
silverware for the club with a 1-0 win over Tring Athletic in the final of the West Herts St Mary’s Cup.
Fergus and Scott are joined by former Under-18 manager Ross Bargent for season 2023/24, and the club has also started a Development Team this season, which will be playing in the Herts Senior County League Premier Division.
Four club stalwarts have received awards from the Football Association and the Herts FA for 50 years’ service to football. The first was Jim Matthews, affectionately known as “Macca”, who passed away at the age of 90 in 2006. The second was Bill Dawes in 2014, and the third was longserving club secretary Brian Barter in 2019. Brian stood down from his role as secretary in 2020, having twice been honoured with awards from the Spartan South Midlands League. The fourth to receive the award was vice-chairman and treasurer Tony Smart in 2023.
