End of the year Ground Review By Bill Dawes Despite, or because of, COVID the playing surface looks and plays the best I’ve seen it in over 20 years. Well that maybe true in part but the amount of work that has been carried out over the last two seasons has been a major factor. Following a top-down review with Craig Ringsell, our external consultant, the annual maintenance was changed and phased more across the year. Greater emphasis was given to aeration plus a change to the fertilizer application; two applications of weed control and seaweed extract has further enhanced the grass cover. For those who know our ground, we bored 50 vertical drain holes above the top goal line and a further 20 down the nearside touchline. Two Shockwave and one Vertidrain passes further improved the drainage. The result being less standing water after rain. Although it’s not perfect, the pitch has attracted many compliments this season. With the changing weather patterns, the really bad weather tends to be during the early months of the year and not at the end; so, fingers crossed for the New Year. COVID did affect positively though, in that play was suspended and that gave the ground a rest at one of the crucial weather periods. Of course, the backroom boys; Roger, Pete and Alan must take a bow for their diligence in carrying out the routine clearing, cleaning, tidying, clipping, trimming, cutting and all the other thankless tasks that keep our ground in good order. A hidden benefit is a cleaner changing room, and thanks to the visitors kindly sweeping their changing room much less work for the team. Finally, we have applied for and been granted £2,500 from the Football Foundation for ground improvements, this will enable us to review equipment and storage requirements. What Bill as not said is that he and his team won an award for the pitch from the Hertfordshire FA.

Breast Cancer Care Nick Payne Fundraising In 2017, Dawn was diagnosed with breast cancer and successfully underwent chemotherapy. Sadly following a reoccurrence she passed away on 28th August 2019. We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up or fight like hell. THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE
Saturday 29th January PREMIER DIVISION The yo-yo positions at the bottom end of the standings took another twist on Saturday as Tring Athletic climbed out of the bottom two with a 3-1 win at Holmer Green, the result saw the hosts drop into the relegation placing’s. Bottom club Crawley Green now find themselves eight points from safety after going down by a solitary goal at home against Milton Keynes Irish. At the top end of the table Hadley dropped two points on the leading two as they were held 1-1 at home by Ardley United while their two promotion rivals both won, leaders Risborough Rangers came from a goal down at the break to win 2-1 at Flackwell Heath while second placed New Salamis were the days big winners with a 6-1 success against visiting Arlesey Town. Elsewhere it was a return to winning ways for both Leverstock Green and Harpenden Town, the ‘Green’ winning by a solitary goal at Broadfields United while the ‘Harps’ enjoyed a 2-0 home success against local rivals London Colney. The day’s other fixtures saw Leighton Town win 3-1 at struggling Baldock Town while Dunstable Town extended their unbeaten league run to ten games with a 1-0 home success against Harefield United. DIVISION ONE No changes at the summit with the top three all winning, leaders Stotfold won ruthlessly at strugglers London Tigers, the Bedfordshire side netting five goals without reply while second placed Winslow United were made to work hard for the points as they edged past visiting Letchworth Garden City Eagles by the odd goal in three. Third placed Ampthill Town were also tested as bottom club Irchester United ran them close before the hosts won 3-2 in front of a healthy crowd of 175 with Sam Holmes netting a brace for the third successive game for the ‘Amps’. Bedford moved into the play-off places with a 2-1 home success against Rushden & Higham United while Shefford Town & Campton continued their climb up the standings with a 2-1 win at Northampton Sileby Rangers, the Bedfordshire side now lie ninth just six points outside the play-off places but have a number of games in hand. Elsewhere Penn & Tylers Green defeated visiting Wellingborough Whitworth 4-1 while Thame United Reserves overcame Langford by a solitary goal in Oxfordshire. At the other end of the table Buckingham United enjoyed a 3-0 success at New Bradwell St Peter while The 61FC (Luton) gained a valuable point at Berkhamsted Raiders following a goalless draw. Elsewhere there were 2-0 away wins for both Aston Clinton and Codicote at Eynesbury United and Milton Keynes College Football Academy respectively. The day’s other action saw Pitstone & Ivinghoe defeat visiting Sarratt with a goal in each half. COMMITTEE AWAYDAYS Bob Flight was at Raunds Town and sends the following report:Two teams from the bottom half of the league table met at Raunds where Town hosted Kidlington Reserves on a bright if windy sunny day in front of a crowd of about 70. Kidlington started well and could have scored in the first minute but the home keeper made a good save. However their pressure told in the 28th minute when William Baker scored following a cross from the right wing. Not much was seen of the home club although they had a shot deflected onto a post and away for a corner. Kidlington were well worth their one goal lead at half time. The second half started in a similar fashion and another good Town save and a goal line clearance keep the visitors at bay. The visitors then, seemingly in control of the game, shot themselves in the foot when following a brief altercation their player was sent off on 58 minutes. The Town player involved received a yellow card for his trouble. This gave Town something to go for and they equalised on 68 minutes when Harry Waple-Moors scored direct from a free kick. Worse was to follow for Kidlington as first they conceded another free kick which was dispatched into the far corner of the visitor’s net on 75 minutes by Dean McBride and then their defender was sin binned for moaning to the referee. Despite being down to nine men, Kidlington tried to battle back and they denied Town any further scoring chances. Indeed during the final few minutes of the game and with the side restored to ten men, they almost snatched a late equaliser but the shot was deflected just wide of a post. The home crowd were well pleased with the valuable three points which keeps Town away from the relegation zone. HERTS SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP Quarter Final Harpenden Town’s run in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup ended at the quarter-final stage when they were beaten 0-4 at Step 3 Southern League side Royston Town. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Leverstock Green 0 Aylesbury Vale Dynamos 2 Saturday 22nd January 2022 Leverstock Green’s poor home form continued as they went down to a disappointing defeat to Aylesbury Vale Dynamos in Saturday’s SSML Premier Division game. Fergus Moore’s side have not won a home league game since October and have only picked up one point at home in that time. The Leverstock side was unchanged from that which performed so impressively at Harpenden last week, and at times they produced football approaching that display, but were unable to convert their chances and were beaten by a goal in each half. The opening stages of the game saw little of note from either side. In the 15th minute there was a glimmer of a chance for Leverstock when a pass from Ollie Cox gave Rawn Seale a chance to run at goal, but his shot was blocked by a defender. The Green side won their first corner in the 18th minute, and Kian Wilkes got on the end of Cox’s cross but headed wide. There was another spell of goalmouth action in the 24th minute as Elgeniy Daalberg had a shot parried away by keeper Dan McAteer. As the ball was recycled, a pass from Wilkes put Rio Beach through on goal but his shot was wide. Daalberg was involved again in the 31st minute as he ran onto a pass from Paul Marks and got past several defenders on a run into the box, but his eventual shot from a narrow angle was saved by McAteer. Five minutes later Brad Robinson sent over a low cross which McAteer missed, but no one was there to convert as the ball flew across the face of the empty net. Leverstock had been well on top, but in the 41st minute they found themselves behind against the run of play. An Aylesbury free kick was flicked on, and Brian Haule finished with a well-struck shot into the corner of the net. The visitors almost added a second on the stroke of half time as Jake Baldwin headed just wide. As the second half progressed it looked more likely that Aylesbury would extend their lead. A great save from Alfie Bonfield on 53 minutes prevented Haule from scoring when clean through, however three minutes later a cross from the right found Baldwin all alone in front of goal to shoot home the second goal. Just after the hour Leverstock made a change as Ollie Lawford came off the bench, and within a minute a flick from Lawford put Seale through on goal, but Seale was unlucky as his rasping shot rattled the post. On 70 minutes Leverstock went close again as a corner from Dan Pett was almost forced over the line. The remainder of the game was disjointed due to both the time-wasting tactics of the visitors, and some strange decisions by the referee leading to some unnecessary exchanges between players. Leverstock kept pushing, and had several efforts at goal, including ambitious overhead efforts from both Daalberg and Lawford, but nothing that seriously threatened McAteer’s goal. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Broadfields United 0 - Leverstock Green 1 Saturday 29th January 2022 Leverstock Green continue to impress with their away form, as they notched a tenth win from their fourteen away fixtures so far. It required a stoppage time penalty to overcome Broadfields United in a tight and evenly contested match played on the 3G pitch at Rayners Lane. Fergus Moore’s side made a bright start to the game, with Elgeniy Daalberg having a solo run into the home box before shooting into the side netting in the second minute. On 11 minutes there was controversy as Rawn Seale ran onto a pass from Kian Wilkes and appeared to be taken out by keeper Matt Faley having knocked the ball past him, but the referee waved away shouts for a penalty. The first half saw Leverstock playing some good football as they enjoyed more of the possession, but the final ball was lacking. Their best chance of the half came three minutes before the break as Daalberg was played clean through on goal, but shot wide of the target. At the other end Alfie Bonfield had little to do other than save a shot from former Green player Billy Smith midway through the half. The second half was similarly short on chances early on, although this time it was the home side who had more of the possession. On 57 minutes they had a shot from a narrow angle into the side netting, and three minutes later Sean Peter had a clear shooting chance but ballooned his shot over the bar. On 66 minutes Bonfield came off his line to charge down a shot from Rico Clarke-Rowe. Leverstock then had a couple of chances, with Daalberg having a shot from a narrow angle turned round the post by Faley on 69 minutes, and four minutes later Seale played a pass to put Wilkes through, but his early shot was straight at Faley. Broadfields had their best chance in the 86th minute as a fierce shot from Eric Lopes got past Bonfield but was cleared off the line by man-of-the-match Jack Allen. In the 89th minute Leverstock had their best effort of the game so far as a well-struck shot from Ryan Carruthers was turned round the post by Faley. In the first minute of stoppage time Wilkes had another long-range effort, which went just wide. It looked like the game was going to end in a stalemate, but deeper into stoppage time Dan Pett was threatening inside the Broadfields box, and as he tried to go round a defender his leg was taken away from him. This time the referee pointed straight to the penalty spot, and Pett stepped up to take the spot kick himself, netting it to win the game in the third minute of stoppage time. It was tough on Broadfields who had the better of the second half, but Leverstock got the reward for a strong defensive display and a clean sheet. New Salamis FC History New Salamis FC were formed in 1971 by fans of Cypriot club Nea Salamis Famagusta, with the Cypriot based club acting as a parent club to their fans in the UK. Playing in the KOPA (Cypriot Football League) a British League setup for Cypriots in London, the club won countless honors and left the league in season 2017/18 as the league's most successful team, winning 12 League Titles. The club also won a record 7 London County Cups. In the 2015/16 season the club won the FA Sunday Cup, following a 1-1 draw with Barnes at Selhurst Park and winning on penalties. In 2016/17 the club lost to Hardwick Social Club on penalties again following a 1-1 draw at Brammall Lane. Many of the players still play for the team today. In 2018/19 we moved into the Herts County Senior League, playing our matches at Enfield Town FC. In our first season we won the prestigious Aubrey Cup Final, and also achieved promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League, after finishing runners-up. Season 2019/20 saw us participate in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One at Step 6, our ambition to achieve promotion to Step 5. In March 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, we sat top of the certain of a top four finish and promotion. We also were the top scorers in all top 10 Divisions as the season was null and void. Last season saw the team reach the first round of the FA Cup, in our first season, and when the season was curtailed in November, we had managed to amass enough points to be promoted to the Premier Division on points per game over two seasons, this season sees a new chapter. FURTHER EXTRACTS FROM THE LEVERSTOCK GREEN CHRONICLE RE LGFC Saturday 24th November 1906 In the Hemel Hempstead Gazettes of 1905 & 1906 there was frequent mention of football matches played by the Leverstock Green team - usually referred to just as The Green. One of the most exciting matches to be reported was played on this Saturday: “LEVERSTOCK GREEN v ABBOTS LANGLEY" The Green journeyed to Abbots Langley on Saturday and defeated them by 4-3. The ground was very wet owing to the thick fog. The Green soon got going and the forwards raced up the field, and Plowman put in lovely shot. This was fisted out by the goalkeeper, and How received it and banged it into the net. This early review made Langley look up and play became very exciting, each side going very strong. Langley, by a good bit of passing soon equalised. The Green were at this time playing a good game and especially Hill at right half who seemed to be just where wanted. Plowman put in as good shot at about 20 yards range which scored Point No 2. The Green were not having matters all their own way and the Langley forwards soon became dangerous and scored their second goal. This was, however, offside, as the Langley forward stood under the bar. Half-time arrived with the score reading 2-2. Upon the restart the Green broke away and for about 5 minutes were putting at goal. Plowman at last put in a ripping shot, which glanced off the crossbar and into the net. The game was now getting very fast, both teams having an equal share of it. Langley by a good shot scored point 3. Both teams tried hard to increase the score and Rance from outside right put in a lightening shot, which the goalkeeper failed to hold. Langley tried hard to equalise and were pressing when the whistle blew for time. All the green played well and it was by far the best game played by us this season. Hall was however, the mainstay of the Green. Seabrook also performed wonders in goal. Of the forwards How and Plowman played very well. Sears, at centre, played a good game, especially with his head. Langley are a clever team and have some very good men. The Green team was: Seabrook: goal, May & Turner: backs, Hill, Sears and Albion: halves, Rance, Thirnham, How Plowman & Jordon: forwards.”
