Alan Lee Reporting SSML Premier Division Leverstock Green 3 – Dunstable Town 0 Saturday 28th August 2021 Leverstock Green continued their excellent start to their league season, as they overcame Dunstable Town 3-0 at Pancake Lane on Saturday to record their third SSML Premier Division win from four matches. It was another disciplined and professional performance from Fergus Moore’s side and a well-deserved three points. Rawn Seale had Leverstock’s first effort on goal in the 6th minute as he beat a defender on a run into the box but shot over the bar. The visitors hit the woodwork on 14 minutes when a cross from Tyler Fry struck the crossbar. A minute later there was something of a scramble inside the Dunstable box as firstly Ollie Lawford hit a shot which was blocked, and then the ball bounced up to Seale, who headed across goal and wide. Seale brought a save out of visiting keeper Mo Elmasry on 22 minutes, hitting a shot which was blocked away by the keeper’s legs. Leverstock were getting closer, and two minutes later had a deserved lead. Ethan Mooney hit a shot from the edge of the box which Elmasry could only parry away, and Isiah Noel-Williams followed up to calmly slot home the rebound for the opening goal. Seale was denied again by Elmasry from close range shortly afterwards, and Leverstock continued to have the better of things for the remainder of the half, but still only held a slender 1-0 lead at the break. However, a strong start to the second half saw Leverstock take full control of the game. Seale went close again on 52 minutes when he used his pace to burst through on goal, but his shot was turned wide by Elmasry. Three minutes later Leverstock won another corner, and Ryan Carruthers’ crossdropped for Paul Marks at the far post. The skipper wasted no time in lashing the ball home from close range for the second goal. Three minutes later a pass from Noel-Williams put Seale away down the right, and his eventual cross found Lawford in front of goal to slot home a third Leverstock goal. Green keeper Alfie Bonfield had little to do in the second half, but pulled off a good save on 69 minutes to keep out a shot from Simon Richards and preserve his clean sheet. On 75 minutes there was a senior debut for Lewis Nicholls, who impressed in last season’s under-18 side. Seale’s performance deserved a goal, and he should have got one in the 88th minute when a pass from Kian Wilkes put him clean through on goal, but his eventual shot was wide. This was a result and performance which should give the side plenty of confidence going into difficult away games this week at Harefield on Tuesday and New Salamis next Saturday. Alan Lee Reporting SSML Premier Division Harefield United 1 - Leverstock Green 3 Saturday 31st August 2021 Leverstock Green made it four wins from five league games, and maintained their average of three goals per game as they pulled off another impressive result from Tuesday night’s visit to Harefield United. This time Fergus Moore’s side had to show patience, as despite dominating the game throughout, they did not find the net until the final 20 minutes of the game. Leverstock went close to opening the scoring in the 5th minute when Scott McGleish hit a goal bound shot which was turned away by keeper Reece Mallett making a low dive to his left. Ollie Lawford was denied a goal in the 16th minute, having lobbed the onrushing Mallett the ball was bouncing into the net until defender Adam Murphy made a last-ditch clearance off the line. The game got a bit scrappy in the latter stages of the half, with both Lawford and McGleish hitting efforts from distance which were just off-target, and Leverstock almost presenting Harefield with a goal after uncharacteristically giving the ball away in their own box, only for Junayd Shawwal to head wide from the resulting cross. The Green side started the second half as impressively as they had started the first. In the opening minute of the half McGleish broke away before feeding Ethan Mooney out on the right, and Mooney ran on to deliver the perfect cross to find Paplamin Jawara at the far post, but Jawara’s side footed finish went across goal and wide. In the 52nd minute Brima Johnson floated a free kick into the box to find McGleish, whose header across goal was met by a header from Paul Marks, which went inches wide. On 63 minutes Isiah Noel-Williams showed great determination to force his way into the box and hit a shot, which was kept out by the boot of Mallett, the rebound just eluding Lawford, who was replaced by Rawn Seale shortly afterwards. Within two minutes of coming on Seale had an effort at goal, which went over the bar. The Leverstock side could have been forgiven for feeling frustrated at not having found the net yet, but they kept pushing forward and finally got their deserved goal in the 73rd minute. Jawara’s pass from his own half found Mooney, who took advantage of a slip from the chasing defender to deliver the ball into the six-yard box where it was blocked by Mallett, however it was Noel-Williams who got to the rebound first and smashed the ball home from close range. The confidence was flowing through the Green side, and on 81 minutes they doubled their lead. Seale made a run down the left and his cross to the far post found Mooney, who had his back to goal but showed the composure to turn and shoot low past Mallett into the bottom corner. The game could have been back in the balance with three minutes left as Harefield pulled a goal back. Alfie Bonfield kept out an effort from Femi Ogunsola, but Shawwal bundled home the rebound. However, straight from the kick-off Leverstock attacked again, and substitute Lewis Collins’ barrelling run into the box was ended when he was bundled over. The referee awarded the penalty, and Jawara fired the spot kick into the top corner of the net to restore his side’s two-goal advantage. That proved to be enough for a very well deserved win, and Leverstock will look to continue their good league form this Saturday when they travel to Haringey to meet Premier Division newcomers New Salamis. Leighton Town FC History
Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. They were mainly involved in local leagues until the outbreak of the Great War, and were winners of the Leighton and District League on several occasions. Leighton were one of the original members of the South Midland League in 1922 – which at the time was known as the Bedfordshire County League. They were also members of the Spartan League between 1922/23 and 1951/52, but their only successes being the Spartan League Division 2 title in 1923/24 and 1927/28. They were Bedfordshire Senior Cup winners in 1926/27. In 1952, they became a founder member of the Hellenic League, but after two disappointing seasons, moved to the South Midlands League. . In 1965/66 season however, the Premier Championship sat in the Leighton Town Boardroom. The club then re-joined the Spartan League in 1967/68. Leighton proceeded to consolidate their League success by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for three successive seasons in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Unfortunately, some of the successful players moved onto other clubs, and Leighton’s fortunes again declined. A move to the United Counties League proved disastrous and, after just two seasons, the club re-joined the South Midlands League. During the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Leighton were unable to capture the success of the ‘60’s. In 1990/1991 the First Team won the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy and the O’Brien’s Premier Division Cup, both for the first time in the club’s history. The 1991/2 season was one of the club’s best ever. The South Midlands Premier Division title, which had eluded the club for so long, was won, and with it a place in the Isthmian League. 1992/3 saw the Club’s success continue when they won the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the first time since 1970. The Club missed out on promotion in their first Isthmian League season by just a single point but the Youth Team retained the County Cup. 1995/6 saw the First Team win promotion to Division 2 of the Isthmian League, whilst at the same time retaining the Buckingham Charity Cup. In the 1996/7 season, Leighton won the Isthmian League Associated Members Trophy for the first time. 1998/99 saw the return of the Associated Members Trophy and the Buckingham Charity Cup.
Season 2003/04 was arguably one of the Club’s best ever, as the First Team won the Ryman Isthmian Second Division title. The team was also named Ryman Division Two Team of the Year, and Paul Burgess was awarded Manager of the Year. They also reached the Fifth round of the FA Vase, and the final of the Beds Senior Cup, before losing to Andover and Arlesey respectively. The 2004-05 season saw the club placed in The Southern League East Division and finished in a creditable tenth place. They also won the Buckinghamshire Charity Cup. The Reserves won the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup and the U18’s won the SCYFL League Shield. The 05-06 Season saw the Club progress again, improving on the year before, as they finished 8th in The Southern League West Division. After a poor start, League results improved and the side only suffered four defeats from the start of November until the end of March, a play-off place just eluding them. After three excellent victories interest in the FA.Trophy competition ended with a single goal defeat to eventual semi-finalists, Borehamwood. The Club also reached the Beds Senior Cup Final, but sadly they again finished as Runners Up. The Club were relocated to the Southern League, Midland Division for 06-07 season but only one League win in the first six games and early exits in the two FA Competitions cost Paul Burgess his job in September. He was replaced by former Wycombe, professional Keith Scott, results did improve but it was a disappointing season, although Town did win the Bucks Senior Charity Cup. The 07-08 started brightly with the first League defeat not coming until mid-October. Three wins in the FA Cup saw the Club reach the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in its history. A 3-0 defeat to Conference South, Havant and Waterlooville finally ended the run. Keith Scott left in December to join Windsor and Eton. In January 2008, Assistant Manager Sean Downey was appointed as First Team Manager and did a splendid job as the Club ended their League season in 9th place, winning the Bucks Charity Cup and reaching the final of the Beds Senior Cup once more. The 08/09 Season the First Team finished 8th in the Southern League, Midland Division, achieving their highest points total to date at that level. The 09/10 season saw Leighton once again finish in the top half of the table, when they finished in 9th place and they also lost the Bedfordshire Senior Cup Final to Southern League rivals, Arlesey Town after penalties. Season 2010/2011 saw Town finish in 7th place in the League, gaining 69 points, their best performance since joining the Southern Football League. The 2011/2012 a poor season saw Leighton finish in their lowest position for several years. 2012/13 was also very disappointing for the First Team as they finished in 20th place. 2015/2016. After 3 disappointing seasons Leighton finished the season in the bottom two of the Southern League Central Division and were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League where they had last played in the 1991/92 season. 2016/2017 This was a disappointing season with the club struggling for much of the time after yet another Managerial Change. Things did pick up towards the end of the season and we eventually finished in 16th place.
2017/18 The club retained Scott Reynolds as Manager and finished 4th in the League and reached the Quarter Finals of the FA VASE. Gates improved and it was our best season for about 8 years, however Manager, Scott Reynolds resigned at the end of the season. 2018/2019 The Club appointed experienced coach Danny Nicholls as the new Manager, but he resigned at the start of October. The Club then appointed Joe Sweeney and Paul Copson as their Management Team and results improved but we were unable to reach 2019 We are hoping to be competitive this season with several new signings but this is a very difficult Division and we are well aware of the quality of many of the teams. 2019/2020 Was a good season for the Club as we again reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase and after a slow start in the League the team started to find some good form as we slowly climbed up the table. The team were also awarded the Team of the Month twice. 2020/2021 Town for the third time in 4 seasons reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase but sadly lost out to 2 late penalties. An indifferent start in the League meant we could not quite gain the points needed to gain promotion in a Covid affected season. 2021/2022 Leighton are hoping to be challenging at the top end of the table but we are well aware that this is a difficult Division and several other strong teams will be competing to finish in the top 2 places.

Alan Lee Reporting SSML Premier Division New Salamis 3 - Leverstock Green 2 Saturday 4th September Leverstock Green were unable to extend their two-game winning run as they fell to a defeat to a New Salamis side that played much of the game with ten men. Fergus Moore’s side had the chances to get something out of this game, but in the end they came up just short against the SSML Premier Division newcomers. It started very well for the Green side as they took an early lead. In the 5th minute Ethan Mooney went on a great run down the left and crossed into the six-yard box where Rawn Seale’s first effort was blocked, but the ball came back to him and he buried it at the second attempt. Home keeper Austin Byfield kept his side in the game with two great saves. In the 15th minute he turned a shot from Ollie Lawford round the post. From the resulting corner the ball dropped for Isiah Noel-Williams, who connected with a rasping shot but Byfield tipped it over the bar. New Salamis started pushing forward, and they had the chance for an equaliser in the 25th minute when Brima Johnson brought down a forward on the edge of the box. Initially the referee awarded a free kick just outside the box, but after consultation with his linesman, changed his mind and awarded the penalty. Ryan Hervel sent Alfie Bonfield the wrong way from the spot to level the scores. Five minutes later the same linesman was involved again as the home side were reduced to ten men. An off-the-ball retaliation by Derek Asamoah on Paul Marks was spotted by the linesman, and Asamoah received a straight red card. The scores were level at 1-1 going into half-time, and although Leverstock made the stronger start to the second half, they found themselves behind somewhat against the run of play in the 55th minute when Deniz Mehmet had the time and space in the box to turn and pick his spot to shoot past Bonfield. Mehmet could have had another three minutes later, but this time his shot was kept out by Bonfield. Instead it was Leverstock who struck next to level the scores at 2-2 in the 69th minute. From a free kick just outside the box, Paplamin Jawara curled a beautiful effort round the wall and into the top corner of the net. However, the scores were only level for four minutes as Leverstock conceded another poor goal. A corner wasn’t dealt with, and Anthony Furlonge pounced to shoot home from close range to put his side back in the lead at 3-2. Leverstock came close to levelling again three minutes later when Adrian Pitfield connected with a near-post header, but it went inches over the bar. There was another chance in the 79th minute from a goalmouth scramble, but Noel-Williams sent his shot from close range flying over the bar. In the 90th minute a great cross from Noel-Williams found Mikkel James at the far post, but his header also went agonisingly close, going inches wide. Despite a flurry of Leverstock corners in stoppage time the home side held on for an impressive win in their first game under their new manager. Alan Lee Reporting FA VASE – 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND LONDON COLNEY 1 - Leverstock Green 1 (4-3 Pens) Saturday 31st August 2021 Leverstock Green exited the FA Vase at the First Qualifying Round stage in a penalty shoot-out at London Colney on Saturday. As with the previous match, it was a case of missed chances proving costly, and despite a late equaliser which took the game into a shoot-out, it was the home side that held their nerve to win through to the next round. After a quiet opening to the game, Leverstock had a couple of efforts at goal, with Rawn Seale hitting a shot just wide after a good run in the 13th minute, and Ethan Mooney shooting over the bar after being set up by Seale two minutes later. In the 27th minute a great pass from Paplamin Jawara put Mooney through on goal but he shot over the bar again. A minute later Leverstock went even closer when a cross from Rio Beach found Lewis Collins at the far post with a volley that hit the underside of the bar and bounced out. At the other end two minutes later the home side had their first near-miss of the game when Isaac Olayeye hit the post with a shot. Leverstock had had the better chances, but it was London Colney who opened the scoring in the 42nd minute. The Green defense was expecting an offside flag when Herbie Townsend received the ball on the right side of the penalty area, but it didn’t come, and Townsend’s cross found Pijus Montvydas in space to head home past Alfie Bonfield. Even then Leverstock had chances to level the scores before the break as Mooney got on the end of a cross from Collins but hit the post from close range, and Seale hit a shot across goal and wide in the final minute of the half. The second half saw fewer chances for both sides. Leverstock created little, with too many of their crosses being easily gobbled up by giant home keeper Thierry-Allan Belleau. The presence of the injured Isiah Noel-Williams was also sorely missed. After three substitutions, Leverstock finally found an equaliser in the 81st minute, as a mix-up in the London Colney defence left Seale all alone, onside and clean through to take the ball round Belleau and slot into the empty net. There had been little in the way of stoppages during the second half until a couple of injuries in the final minutes resulted in a lengthy period of stoppage time. One of those injuries was to Belleau, who had to leave the game to be replaced by sub keeper Sam Launay. Leverstock were unable to seriously test Launay over the few minutes that he played, and with replays and extra-time both abolished in this season’s Vase, the game went straight to penalties. Scott McGleish stepped up to take Leverstock’s first kick, but it hit the post and went wide. Andrew Simmons scored London Colney’s first kick to put them into a 1-0 lead. The next six penalties were all successful with neither keeper getting close to any of them. Rio Beach stepped up for Leverstock’s 5th kick needing to score to keep the tie alive, but his kick went wide sending London Colney through 4-3 on penalties. Fergus Moore’s side will have the chance of quick revenge, as the two sides meet again at Cotlandswick next Saturday in the league. Before that, they are at home to Leighton Town on Tuesday night.
