Leighton Town Club History Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. They were mainly involved in local leagues until the outbreak of the Great War and were winners of the Leighton and District League on several occasions.

Leighton were one of the original members of the South Midland League in 1922 – which at the time was known as the Bedfordshire County League. They were also members of the Spartan League between 1922/23 and 1951/52, but their only successes being the Spartan League Division 2 title in 1923/24 and 1927/28. They were Bedfordshire Senior Cup winners in 1926/27. League In 1952, they became a founder member of the Hellenic League, but after two disappointing seasons, moved to the South Midlands League. In 1965/66 season however, the Premier Championship sat in the Leighton Town Boardroom. The club then rejoined the Spartan League in 1967/68.

Leighton proceeded to consolidate their League success by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for three successive seasons in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Unfortunately, some of the successful players moved on to other clubs, and Leighton’s fortunes again declined. A move to the United Counties League proved disastrous and after just two seasons, the club rejoined the South Midlands League.

During the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Leighton were unable to capture the success of the ‘60’s.

In 1990/1991 the First Team won the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy and the O’Brien’s Premier Division Cup, both for the first time in the club’s history.

The 1991/2 season was one of the club’s best. The South Midlands Premier Division title, which had eluded the club for so long, was won, and with it a place in the Isthmian League. 1992/3 saw the Club’s success continue when they won the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the first time since 1970. The Club missed out on promotion in their first Isthmian League season by just a single point but the Youth Team retained the County Cup. 1995/6 saw the First Team win promotion to Division 2 of the Isthmian League, whilst at the same time retaining the Buckingham Charity Cup. In the 1996/7 season, Leighton won the Isthmian League Associated Members Trophy for the first time. 1998/99 saw the return of the Associated Members Trophy and the Buckingham Charity Cup. Season 2003/04 Leighton won the Ryman Isthmian Second Division title. They were also named Ryman Division Two Team of the Year, and Paul Burgess was awarded Manager of the Year. They also reached the Fifth round of the FA Vase, and the final of the Beds Senior Cup, before losing to Andover and Arlesey Town respectively.

The 2004-05 season saw the club placed in The Southern League East Division and finished in a creditable tenth place. They also won the Buckinghamshire Charity Cup. The Reserves won the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup and the U18’s won the SCYFL League Shield.

The 05-06 Season saw the Club progress again, improving on the year before, as they finished 8th in The Southern League Western Division. After a poor start, League results improved and the side only suffered four defeats from the start of November until the end of March, a play-off place just eluding them.

After three excellent victories interest in the FA.Trophy competition ended with a single goal defeat to eventual semi-finalists, Borehamwood.

The Club also reached the Beds Senior Cup Final, but sadly they again finished as Runners Up. The Club were relocated to the Southern League Midland Division for 06-07 season but only one League win in the first six games and early exits in the two FA Competitions cost Paul Burgess his job in September. He was replaced by former Wycombe professional Keith Scott, results did improve but it was a disappointing season, although Town did win the Bucks Senior Charity Cup. The 07-08 started brightly with the first League defeat not coming until mid-October. Three wins in the FA Cup saw the Club reach the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in it’s history. A 3-0 defeat to Conference South, Havant and Waterlooville finally ended the run. Keith Scott then left in December to join Windsor and Eton. In January 2008, Assistant Manager Sean Downey was appointed as First Team Manager and did a splendid job as the Club ended their League season in 9th place, winning the Bucks Charity Cup and reaching the final of the Beds Senior Cup once more.

The 08/09 Season the First Team finished 8th in the Southern League, Midland Division, achieving their highest points total to date at that level. The 09/10 season saw Leighton once again finish in the top half of the table, when they finished in 9th place and they also lost the Bedfordshire Senior Cup Final to Southern League rivals, Arlesey Town after penalties. Season 2010/2011, saw Town finish in 7th place in the League, gaining 69 points,their best performance since joining the Southern Football League.

The 2011/2012 a poor season saw Leighton finish in their lowest position for several years.

2012/13 was also very disappointing for the First Team as they finished in 20th place.

2015/2016 After 3 disappointing seasons Leighton finished the season in the bottom two of the Southern League Central Division and were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League where they had last played in the 1991/92 season.

2016/2017 This was a disappointing season with the club struggling for much of the time after yet another Managerial Change. Things did pick up towards the end of the season and we eventually finished in 16th place.

2017/18 The club retained Scott Reynolds as Manager and finished 4th in the League and reached the Quarter Finals of the FA VASE. Gates improved and it was our best season for about 8 years, 2018/2019 Manager, Scott Reynolds resigned in the close season and Danny Nicholls was appointed as Manager but left in October due to work commitments. The Club then appointed Joe Sweeney and Paul Copson, who had previously won the Premier division title with London Colney as the new Management Team. They steadied the ship and it was town’s best season for many years and and we finished in mid table.

2019/2020 Was a good season for the Club as we again reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase and after a slow start in the League the team started to find some good form as we slowly climbed up the table.

The team were also awarded the Team of the Month twice.

2020/2021 Town for the third time in 4 seasons reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase but sadly lost out to 2 late penalties. An indifferent start in the League meant we could not quite gain the points needed to gain promotion in a Covid affected season.

2021/2022 We eventually finished 4th in the table after a mid season Management change Lee Bircham was appointed Manager and after the disappointment of losing our previous 4 Beds Senior Cup Final we won the Trophy by beating Southern League Div 1 Champions, Bedford Town on penalties after the game had ended in a 2-2 draw.

2022/2023 season was our best for many years with First Team winning the Spartan South Midlands Premiership Title and completing a double by winning the Premier Division League Cup. Our Development team in their first season also gained promotion from Spartan League Division 2. The Under 18 made it a great season for the club by winning the Corinthian Division of the SCYFL and then winning the Beds Under 18 Cup. After winning the Premier Division Cup , Manager,Lee Bircham announced that he was leaving the club to join Bedford Town along with his assistant Tony Joyce and coach Sam Pateman. Sean Downey and John McLoughlin were quick to start interviewing suitable applicants for the job and eventually Gary Flinn and Gary Chance were appointed,after steering Newport Pagnell to 2 consecutive FA Vase Finals in 2022 and 2023. Season 2023/2024 The season ended with us just above the relegation places after some disappointing results in the last couple of months when injuries and a loss of form saw us drop from mid table to the lower end of the table, our managers have been working hard in pre season to attract players to the club and we are sure that the new season will be better with the new additions to the side..

After 6 games without a win it was decided a change of management was needed and Guy Kefford has now taken over with assistance from coaches Paul Reed and Kyle Durcan

Anthony Ball – Full back Anthony is a typical modern full back great energy and equally at home defending or attacking. Previously with Kings Langley.

Ben Ford Left back Joined the Club in the close season and has already showed Town supporters why the club was so keen to sign him , previously with Newport Pagnell.

Luke is another new signing having joined from Northwood in the summer and has already displayed his qualities in our pre-season games .

Lee Cooksey Centre Back Now in his second season at who is both strong in the air and a good tackler.

Alfie Powell - Defence Alfie is no nonsense defender who never gives less than a 100%, now in his second season at Leighton . Missed the end of last season due to injury and has just resumed playing.

Louie Barrett –Midfileld Also in his second season at Leighton , Louie is a quick attacking player who also scores goals .

Charlie Pattison - Midfield . Local boy,Charlie is also in his second season at Leighton and is an athletic midfielder with good all round skills.

Sebastian Simpson -Midfield Now in his second season at Leighton he was a consistent performer in midfield last season but is also capable of playing in defence if required. A genuine player who never gives less than 100%.

Emmanuel Dahie – Midfield Emmanuel joined the club this season after previously playing for Cambridge City. Strong, hard working midfielder..

Kyle Boyce -Midfield- Kyle is another recent signing after previously playing at MK Dons.He is a quick and tricky player who looks comfortable when in possession who will also get a few goals this season Lynton Goss -Striker Lynton is an experienced striker who is well known in local football circles for his goalscoring but he is a good all round striker who can also hold the ball up to bring team mates into play. Team Captain Sam King- Striker Sam is now in his second season at Leighton and we have high hopes that he will regain the form he showed before he received a bad injury whilst playing for Shefford.

Ben Farrell – Midfield Ben is an very experienced midfield player who previously spent several seasons with Rushden & Diamonds . Now in his second season with Leighton.

Harvey Heeps -GK Harvey has come through the ranks of LTFC Youth and Development teams and is a promising young keeper Finley Jaggard – Striker Finlay made his first team debut last year after progressing through our under 18 team and the development team. Quick player always looking for a chance near goal, Definitely one for the future, Jack Sayell - Midfield An energetic midfield player who has progressed through the youth and reserve teams and has looked more than comfortable at this level.

Elliott Kefford. Central defender. Another young player who performed well in the Reserves last season before suffering a serious knee injury. Now on the road to recovery but will not ready to start playing again until next season.

Charlie Stirland. Defender. Charlie who is on loan to Leighton from MK Dons has performed well in different positions and has shown his adaptability. We are pleased to have his services.

Harry Tucker. Defender. Harry joined us a few weeks ago and can play in central defence or as a defensive midfielder.

Alfie Tucker. Midfield. Alfie joined us from Thame United. We are sure he will do well for us as the season progresses and he gets more game time.

Tolu Ikumyinminu. Midfield. Recent signing from Biggleswade Town, an exciting wide attacking player Who can play on either flank.

Alan Lee Reporting Leverstock Green 1 Vs Berkhamsted 0 Leverstock Green notched a second straight win and clean sheet as they overcame neighbours Berkhamsted in the first round of the Herts Senior Cup on Tuesday night. A second half header from Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica was enough to seal a well-deserved and hard-fought win for the Leverstock side, who now face a home tie against Stevenage in the second round.

The first half saw the visitors have the majority of the pressure, although they only had one clearcut chance, in the 31st minute when a cross found Leverstock legend Jonathan Lacey at the far post, but Lacey’s header went across goal and wide. Leverstock should have taken the lead two minutes before the break. Callum Neal was through on goal, and squared to set up a chance for Rawn Seale, whose shot was saved by Berko keeper Matthew Burch, although Seale and the supporters behind the goal were convinced that the ball had crossed the line before Burch pulled it back. The goal was not given, and Leverstock manager Fergus Moore was sent off for his protests.

In the opening minute of the second half Lacey had another chance, but Alfie Bonfield pulled off a tremendous save to tip his shot over the bar. There was another moment of controversy in the 73rd minute when Eyituoyo Akinbulumo got his head to a cross to seemingly put Leverstock in the lead, but the goal was then disallowed for a foul on Burch.

However, five minutes later Leverstock had the ball in the net again and this time it counted. Rio Beach went on a run down the left and delivered a superb cross which found the unmarked Stefanoaica at the far post with a perfectly-placed header past Burch to finally put Leverstock 1-0 up.

That proved to be enough as the Leverstock defence remained as solid as it had been throughout the game. Both centre-backs Gary Connolly and Akinbulumo were outstanding, but the latter just got the nod as man-of-the-match for his performance.

Alan Lee Reporting Welwyn Garden City 4 VS Leverstock Green 0 With two wins within the last week under their belts, Leverstock Green went into Saturday’s visit to Welwyn Garden City with momentum on their side, but it proved to be a tough afternoon as the home side completed a league double over Leverstock with a comfortable win.

Fergus Moore is still missing a number of players through injury, and with both Rawn Seale and Guiseppe Delgaudio injured had no centre forward today. Right back Callum Neal was unavailable so new signing Isaiah Hilaire was drafted in at right back. Leverstock made a slow start to the game and were two goals down within ten minutes. In the 5th minute a cross from the left was not cleared and Lewis Jones came in at the far post to head home. Five minutes later another cross from the left came in and Lewis Taaffe got on the end of it to shoot home from close range.

A tactical reshuffle saw Hilaire moved out to left wing while Ethan Mooney went to right back, but Leverstock were still struggling to hold onto the ball for any length of time. Brad Wadkins should have added a third for Welwyn in the 24th minute but his shot hit the bar, and a minute later Layne Eadie ran through on goal but hit his shot wide. Leverstock won their first corner of the game in the 36th minute, and home keeper Joe Welch could only punch it up into the air. As the ball came down Mooney got his head to it, but it went over the bar.

Leverstock were somewhat fortunate to get to the break only two goals behind, but the second half proved to be no easier. Five minutes in they had a free kick in a dangerous position, but Ryan Carruthers’ shot was comfortably gathered by Welch. Welwyn went straight down the other end, and it was a familiar story as a cross from the left found Taaffe unmarked to shoot home their third goal.

Taaffe could have completed his hat-trick in the 60th minute as the referee awarded Welwyn a penalty for an incident in a scramble following a corner.

However, Alfie Bonfield pulled off a great save to keep his spot kick out.

The fourth goal did eventually arrive in the 72nd minute. A corner was headed away to the edge of the penalty area, where Matty Whichelow met it with a low shot through a crowd of players into the bottom corner of the net.

Late substitutions saw a first team debut for Shay Kelly, who has come up through the youth teams at Leverstock, and a debut for Lewis Croucher, who had only left Welwyn a few days earlier and was quickly snapped up by Leverstock.

Leverstock had some half-chances to pull a goal back in the remaining minutes, but this is a game they will have to quickly put behind them as they are back in action on Monday night with a trip to Bedford to face Biggleswade FC. Alan Lee Reporting Biggleswade FC 3 VS Leverstock Green 3 . Leverstock Green led three times in Monday night’s game away to Biggleswade FC, but they had to be content with a point and will be quite grateful for that point after the home side came very close to snatching the win at the death.

The Leverstock side was boosted by the return of both Dan Pett and top scorer Guiseppe Delgaudio from injury, and they thought they had taken the lead in the third minute. Lewis Collins was put clear down the right and crossed into the box where Luke Beckwith put it away from close range, however the goal was disallowed for a questionable offside decision. In the 21st minute it was the turn of the home side to put the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled out by an offside flag.

Two minutes later a pass from Rio Beach put Beckwith in behind the defence and through on goal. Beckwith looked set to finish, but instead squared across goal where Delgaudio came in at the far post to finish, and this time there was no flag as Leverstock took a 1-0 lead. In the 32nd minute Delgaudio might have had a second when he spotted the keeper off his line and launched a chip from distance, but it landed just wide.

Three minutes before half time the scores were level as Amir Hadi made something out of nothing with an outstanding finish from a very narrow angle.

Leverstock were back in front in the 63rd minute, and it was a second goal for Delgaudio, whose low shot from the edge of the penalty area wasn’t the hardest but left the home keeper standing and watching it go in.

The 2-1 lead lasted seven minutes, as Biggleswade substitute Ethan Kessel finished from close range to level the scores at 2-2. However, almost straight from the restart Collins won the ball and headed for goal before squaring for Beckwith to score and put Leverstock back into an immediate lead at 3-2.

In the 74th minute Alfie Bonfield produced a great save to keep out a shot from Hadi, with Eyituoyo Akinbulumo completing the clearance with a header off the line. With a couple of minutes to go Isaiah Hilaire might have added a further Leverstock goal, but had the ball taken off his toe by a defender when just about to shoot. As the game went into five minutes added time Leverstock were still holding their lead, but the home side’s persistence paid off in the second added minute when Dan Carey-Evans volleyed home from inside the box to level the scores at 3-3.

Biggleswade certainly weren’t settling for the point, and piled pressure on the Leverstock goal over the remaining minutes, hitting the bar on one occasion, but Leverstock held out for a very well-deserved point from a very entertaining game of football.

A few words about KitAid KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd).

The current poster boy is, of course, Anthony Barry. In case you didn’t seem, the former Conference title winner landed a new job last week.

England assistant manager!

It’s only been seven years since he was in Wrexham’s midfield. Since taking the coaching path, he’s been on the staff at Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Belgium and Portugal – now he will be Thomas Tuchel’s right-hand man.

“Pretty incredible,” he said when asked how it felt for England’s YouTube channel. “Quite surreal. The process since it started has been fantastic. Thomas and I have loved every minute of it. As soon as I’ve seen this project capture the imagination of Thomas in the way that it did, we were back and forward sharing so much energy towards it, the imagination of the team and what we can do with these players.

“And then, of course, there is the extra layer for me. I am an Englishman. I’ve worked at other federations around the world. It was always a privilege to work on the highest level.

“But to come home now and represent The FA, England and the Three Lions is something that is the proudest day of my career so far.”

Liverpool-born Barry, 38, progressed through the Everton youth ranks but was released at 18 and went on to play for Coventry City, Accrington Stanley, Yeovil Town and Chester City.

Barry joined Fleetwood Town to help them win promotion to the Football League before joining Step 1 Forest Green Rovers for the 2013-14.

Finishing his career after a second stint at Wrexham, Barry joined Paul Cook’s backroom staff at Wigan in 2017 and after a chance meeting with Frank Lampard while studying for his UEFA Pro-Licence.

His detailed analysis of 16,380 throw-ins made a mark on Lampard and Barry was drafted in to work under the Blues legend as a set-piece coach – a role which he has since gone on to make his name.

Lampard departed in January 2021, but Barry stayed on at Stamford Bridge to work under his successor Tuchel.

The pair developed a strong friendship, helping Chelsea win the Champions League, and when Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea in September 2022, he returned for Barry when he was appointed at Bayern Munich the following year. England will be their third job together.

This, however, will not be Barry’s first foray into international football having worked with the Republic of Ireland and also under Roberto Martinez with both Belgium and Portugal.

But while the 2026 World Cup may now be in his sights, the humble Three Lions assistant says he still looks back today on his very first taste of coaching at the age of 29, working with Accrington Stanley's U16 side with injury now stalling his playing career.

“I remember that first session so clearly,” Barry told the Essential Euros podcast last summer.

“It was on a Tuesday night. It was with around 10 players. I had a third of a pitch, not enough balls, not enough bibs.

“But I simply fell in love with coaching and on that night I knew it was absolutely everything I wanted to do. I felt a passion from that session with those kids that I hadn't felt in playing games - even at Wembley. I knew right there and then, I wanted to be a young coach.”

A lot has been written about the opportunities English managers and coaches since Tuchel’s appointment. And there is a debate to be had.

But it’s good to see one of Non-League’s own flying the flag.

Leverstock Green Reserves exited their second cup competition on successive Saturdays, losing on penalties to Codicote’s first team in the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy. At half time the score was 1-1, with both goals coming from penalties – Connor McGinty for Leverstock and James Ewington for Codicote, and the visitors were down to ten men with Ewington having received two yellow cards. A second McGinty penalty put Leverstock 2-1 up, but yet another penalty saw Aaron Jarvis level the scores for Codicote. With the scores level at 90 minutes, the game went to penalties and Codicote won the shootout 4-2.

Alan Lee Reporting Codicote 5 VS Leverstock Green (U18) 3 Leverstock Green’s Under-18s fell to a 5-3 defeat away to Codicote in Thursday night’s SCFYL Delphian Division game. The home side went into an early 3-0 lead, but Leverstock pulled a goal back from the penalty spot and pulled it back to 3-2 just before half time. Codicote scored a fourth after half time before Leverstock pulled another goal back, but Codicote scored a 5th goal to clinch the game.
