Harpenden Town Football Club was formed as Harpenden F.C. 1891 playing in both the Mid-Herts and Herts County Leagues, winning the Mid-Herts on numerous occasions. Town was added in the 1908.
Town climbed into the South Midlands League in 1957 winning the Premier Division title in 1962 and 1965 and in 1968 adding both the Herts Charity Shield & the South Midlands League Shield to their trophy haul.
Season 1990 91 saw the last significant investment in the club with the erection of the Centenary Stand, and the installation of floodlights. The Club obtained entry to the FA Cup for the first time in 1998 and is a regular contender in the FA Vase.
After a turbulent period resulting in relegation from the Premier Division in 2000 and 2005. At the start of the 2006/07 season a new committee was in place their first move was to gain the Football Associations Charter Standard Accreditation, which ensured the correct structures were in place.
On the field the club also required stabilising and it was felt that more local community approach was needed so links with Harpenden Colts were established to bring through local young players ensuring a pathway from under sevens to adult football.
Success soon followed and after only one year Harpenden Town was named Herts FA Charter Standard club of the year thanks to their community work, which included hosting an anti-racism event, an adult seven aside competition, free coaching offered to schools/junior teams and the development of women’s football through the Herts youth games.
The past two seasons has seen Harpenden make strides to secure its long-term future however with possibly the worst facilities in the league due to lack of investment and vandalism over the past 20 years we face a massive task to completely turn around the clubs fortunes. We now have a new football management set up with local loyalties and most new players come from the local area. Off the field there is a new committee of local football fans who have not been involved with the club before supported by the old committee and others who still assist with the running of the club.
In 2015 having successfully obtained £100k of funding the club’s facilities have been refurbished which has had a positive impact on the club and its profile.
2018 19 was the last for the very successful manager Danny Plumb that included promotion back to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division and a memorable Divisional Cup triumph inspired by local PE teacher David Keenleyside and striker James Ewington.
For the last 2 Covid hit seasons and currently the team is managed by Mickey Nathan assisted by Steve O’Reilly and Rob Swan. In the 21 22 season our 130 year anniversary season the team finished a very credible 5th in the Spartan Premier division. It also marked a return to our original colours of Green and Gold Stripes.
The same management team continued for the 22 23 season which would be the last on a grass playing surface as the plans for an All Weather pitch funded by the Football Foundation for the community ready for the 23 24 season

After six league games without a win, Leverstock Green finally returned to winning ways in style with a 4 1 win over Baldock Town in Saturday’s SSML Premier Division fixture, completing a league double over Baldock. Most of the damage was done in the first half, despite a quiet start to the game. The game’s first shot was an effort over the bar in the 7th minute from Rio Beach. Leverstock had the ball in the 10th minute as George Mitchell Gears slotted home from a Radu Mihai Stefanoaica cross, but he was flagged for offside. At the other end two minutes later, Lawrence Ajong put the ball across the face of the Leverstock goal, but no one was on the end of it, and on 15 minutes a shot from Dominik Robertson stung the hands of Austin Byfield. Leverstock were having more of the goal threat. On 16 minutes a cross from Brad Robinson was over the outstretched arm of keeper David Archer but dropped onto the bar, and on 27 minutes a cross from Stefanoaica was met with a glancing header from Ethan Mooney that was not enough to divert it on target. Finally, in the 30th minute Mooney did well on the right edge of the penalty area and chipped a cross into the six yard box, where Stefanoaica met it with a volley to open the scoring and notch his first goal for the club in his 8th game. He didn’t have long to wait for his second goal. In the 38th minute Mooney exchanged passes with Blunden on a quick break before sending over a cross from the bye line which found Stefanoaica on the edge of the six yard box with the space to control the ball with his first touch and calmly drill home a shot with his second touch for a 2 0 lead.
It should have been 3 0 in the 42nd minute when Blunden was clean through against Archer, but Leverstock’s top scorer was uncharacteristically off target as he blasted the ball over the bar. However, the third goal did arrive in the first minute of stoppage time, as Ibrahim Nagheeb received a pass from Stefanoaica and stroked a shot from the edge of the box low into the corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Baldock had played better than the scoreline suggested in the first half, and they had the better of the early stages of the second half as they put the Green goal under some pressure but were unable to get the early goal that might have caused some nerves in the Leverstock defence. Instead, it was the Green side that increased their lead in the 58th minute. A corner was cleared to the edge of the box, where Stefanoaica met it with a shot into the ground which was probably going into the net as it bounced towards the goal, but Blunden made sure as he got his head to the ball inches before the goal line to register a goal for the fourth straight game. Blunden was replaced by new signing Tyriq Hunte immediately after bagging his goal, with one eye on the injury that caused him to leave Wednesday night’s game early. Baldock looked like getting a goal back in the 65th minute when Ryan Lamond was through on goal, but Byfield did well to turn his shot wide. Leverstock were unable to add to their tally, with off target efforts from Mooney and Hunte being as close as they got. They were also denied the clean sheet as Baldock got their consolation goal in the 89th minute with a free kick from outside the box that somehow got through everyone and rolled into the corner of the net. However, it was still an excellent win which lifts Leverstock back into the top half of the table. Despite Stefanoaica’s two goals and two assists, Bobby Armstrong was nominated as man of the match for his solid performance at the back.

Leverstock Green followed up their 4 1 win last Saturday with another 4 1 win as they toppled the start of play league leaders Crawley Green in a remarkable game at the Brache which saw both goalkeepers red carded.
Fergus Moore was without top scorer Chris Blunden, who was unavailable, and George Mitchell Gears, serving a one match suspension for five bookings. However, there was a first appearance of the season for last season’s top scorer Rawn Seale, who has been unavailable to play so far this season.
Leverstock made a bright start to the game, with Radu Mihai Stefanoaica putting the ball across the face of the Crawley goal in the 5th minute. Two minutes later came the first major incident of the game. Bobby Armstrong played a ball forward for Seale to chase, and home keeper Loris Marcimain came racing out of his area and handled the ball outside the box. The referee adjudged that it was a deliberate handball to prevent a goal and showed a red card to the keeper. Crawley defender Marius Patru took over in goal for the resulting free kick and could only watch as Ibrahim Nagheeb drilled a low shot into the corner of the net to open the scoring in the 10th minute.
There was an immediate change of keeper for Crawley, as forward Brandon Carney replaced Patru in goal, and Carney went on to give an impressive display in goal, firstly denying Seale a goal when he was clean through in the 27th minute. In the 30th minute a loss of concentration at the back gifted a chance to the home side, but Josh Adeyieka shot into the side netting.
Leverstock were looking the more likely to score, though, with Stefanoaica having a good run into the box in the 32nd minute but slipping over at the vital moment. Seconds later a shot from Ethan Mooney brought a good save out of Carney as he tipped it onto the post. Seale netted the rebound but was flagged offside. The second goal eventually arrived in first half stoppage time with a neat move started by Armstrong and Rio Beach, and ending with Stefanoaica laying off to Dan Pett, who curled a superb shot out of Carney’s reach into the corner of the net.
Leverstock continued to look impressive in the second half. On 51 minutes a shot from Nagheeb took a deflection and flew inches over the angle of post and bar. Two minutes later a pass from Ryan Carruthers put Seale through again, but Carney produced another good save to turn Seale’s shot away. Crawley’s task was made harder when Patru was sent to the sinbin in the 58th minute for arguing about an incident at a corner. Leverstock took advantage of their opponents being temporarily down to nine men, adding a third goal in the 65th minute. Mooney crossed from the right edge of the penalty area and Stefanoaica fired home a shot for his third goal in two games.
It was still 3 0 as the game went into the 90th minute. A mistake at the back left Adeyieka through on goal, and as he reached the penalty area his run was ended by a foul challenge from Leverstock keeper Austin Byfield. The referee showed consistency with his earlier decision and again showed the red card to Byfield for preventing a goalscoring opportunity. Scott McGleish, who had only come off the bench two minutes earlier, took over in goal and got a hand to Garry Jones’ penalty, but could not keep it out as Crawley pulled back a consolation goal. However, there was still another story to come. Callum Moore, 16 year old son of manager Fergus, had come off the bench in the 82nd minute for his senior debut. In the 5th minute of stoppage time, a shot from Elgeniy Daalberg took a wicked deflection and looped up over Carney. The ball came back off the crossbar and Moore was there to nod home the rebound and notch his first senior goal on his debut, restoring Leverstock’s three goal advantage and completing an impressive 4 1 win. The three points moves Leverstock up to seventh place in the table.

Taylor Rhiney (Biggleswade United) led the way with a four goal haul while Joshua Adeyileka (Crawley Green), Temilola Akinbusoye (Stotfold), Halim Halim (Rugby Borough) and Christopher White (Sarratt) all netted hat tricks.
No changes at the top of the Premier Division as the top three all recorded wins, leaders Stotfold won 5 0 at lowly Ardley United, second placed Crawley Green saw off struggling Colney Heath, the hosts winning 5 0 while third placed Leighton Town enjoyed a 3 1 at Harpenden Town. In the day’s other Premier Division action Potton United edged out hosts St Panteleimon by a solitary goal, Cockfosters inflicted a 5 1 defeat on Shefford Town & Campton while Aylesbury Vale Dynamos saw off the threat of visiting Hoddesdon Town winning 4 0.

In the days other league action Burton Park Wanderers took their unbeaten league run to seven games with a 3 0 success at Buckingham Athletic (more on this later in the ramblings) while Ampthill Town sit just outside the play off places following a 3 1 home success against Winslow United.

At the other end of the table bottom club The 61FC (Luton) remain pointless after being beaten 0 6 at Berkhamsted Raiders while Buckingham United picked up three much needed points with a 4 2 success against fellow strugglers Risborough Rangers Development. Elsewhere Totternhoe found themselves reduced to nine men after just ten minutes in their game at Aston Clinton, the visitors producing a battling display despite their handicap to win by the odd goal on five while Codicote remain fifth following their 1 1 home draw with Milton Keynes College Football Academy, the visitors remain sixth. The day’s other league action saw Pitstone & Ivinghoe enjoy a 4 0 win at Potton United Development while Sarratt ruined AFC Caddington’s new manager first game in charge with a 3 1 home win.
Leighton Town Development advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division Two Cup with a solitary first half goal success against visiting Bovingdon, the hosts now await next month’s draw to find out their next opponents.
SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Buckingham Athletic and pens the following report:- On a fine autumn afternoon, Buckingham Athletic hosted the improving Burton Park Wanderers and the visitors left with all three points. Before the kick off, a minutes silence was observed in memory of Club Committee member and ex chairman of Athletic, Ron Ackerman who sadly passed away during the week. It was an entertaining match and a young Athletic team more than held their own against Wanderers who had greatly improved recently. Just when Athletic thought they had held on for a goalless first half, Wanderers scored when a foul on Rory Busby went unpunished and Burton raced away to score on 40 minutes through Lewis Martin. Although all the chances in the first half fell to Burton, Karl Daley in the home goal would not be beaten and he made several excellent saves. The second half saw Athletic come into the match and an early header was saved and another effort went wide of goal. A later chance was well saved by the Burton keeper. Both teams made substitutions, and this paid off for Burton as both scored. Josh Drain scored a great headed goal from a right wing cross on 69 minutes and in time added on, Lewis Kennedy scored after Daley had saved a previous shot. The scoreline is harsh on Athletic whose young team battled throughout the game but with little reward to show for their huge effort. Continued efforts like in this game should see Athletic pick up sufficient points to keep them away from any relegation worries. AND FINALLY

Colin Bull, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Roger Stokes

Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons.
At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter Step Play Offs.
This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted.
The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play Off Criteria
12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG.
It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
