Ground A lot of work has been completed over the last 8 weeks by the “grounds team”. This included painting, fixing, installing a large number of items.

The “grounds team" have completed the installation of the new garage with our builder Simon. The electrics will be completed shortly by Scott M. I would like to thank the following, Bill, Roger, Pete, Alan B, Scott M, Steve Y for their work for the club, unpaid volunteering. They did a fantastic job on the Summer Jobs.

The pitch also had to be looked after during all of this work and it is a credit to Bill and Roger.

Alan Lee Reporting SSML Premier Division Leverstock Green 1 Risborough Rangers 0 Tuesday 2nd August 2022 Leverstock Green got their Spartan South Midlands Premier Division season off to a fantastic start with three points thanks to a dramatic late free kick from Chris Blunden. After a pre-season in which they had conceded goals left, right and centre, they might have been expected to struggle against last season’s runners-up, who only lost three games last season, but the whole team turned in a tremendous performance of courage, shape and discipline to keep the game tight and then win it at the death.

At the centre of the Green defence were two new signings in Luke Durnin and Alvin Kyeremeh, who hadn’t played together before but looked assured throughout the game. It wasn’t a happy return to Pancake Lane for keeper Alfie Bonfield, who lined up against his former side having made the switch to Risborough in the summer. Leverstock had the game’s first effort at goal in the 5th minute, with Luke Beckwith hitting a shot from outside the box just wide. At the other end in the 13th minute veteran striker Jefferson Louis headed just wide from a free kick. Four minutes later Curtis Brown had a run at goal for the visitors but was well shepherded by Kyeremeh.

Leverstock had another good chance in the 30th minute when a cross from Ethan Mooney went over the head of a defender and found Beckwith, who got to the bye-line and put the ball across the face of goal, but no-one was on the end of it. The half ended with Louis hitting a shot just wide for Risborough. Three minutes into the second half George Mitchell-Gears had an effort at goal from the edge of the box, which flew just over the bar. In the 58th minute a Risborough free kick caused problems inside the Green six-yard box, but a save from keeper Josh Mollison and the woodwork kept the game goalless. A minute later Leverstock broke away and were only denied when a shot from Mooney was tipped over the bar by Bonfield.

There was another chance in the 72nd minute when a great pass from Rio Beach put Mitchell-Gears in behind the defence, but his lob over Bonfield also went over the bar. Risborough were denied again in the 81st minute when Mollison pulled off a superb save to tip a header from Louis, which bounced up off the ground over the bar. Four minutes later a Risborough free kick found Gavin James free at the far post but his header was straight into Mollison’s arms.

Leverstock had done enough to earn a honourable draw, but things were about to get even better.

Two minutes from time a foul on skipper Ibrahim Nagheeb presented them with a free kick 30 yards out in the centre of the pitch. The stage was set for Blunden to produce one of his trademark free kicks, and he did not disappoint. Blunden’s chip shot flew over the wall and dipped under the bar and over the despairing reach of Bonfield into the net to send the Leverstock support into ecstasy.

There could have even been a second goal a minute later as Leverstock broke away again, and Mitchell-Gears set up Blunden with a shot which deflected wide off the boot of a defender. The single goal proved to be enough, though, as the Green side held out comfortably over four minutes of stoppage time to claim a very impressive result and a deserved clean sheet.

Attention now turns to the Emirates FA Cup, and the visit of Essex Senior League side Halstead Town in Saturday’s Extra Preliminary Round tie.

The Views Expressed Are Solely My Own, Are Written Tongue In Cheek And Should Be Taken With A Pinch Of Salt Well after 56 years and one day football finally came home on Sunday 31 July and then two days later the 2022-23 SSML campaign kicked off. The summer break has seen the SSML undergo many changes following promotions, relegations and the reshuffle by the FA. Departing the SSML for pastures new are New Salamis, Hadley (both promoted to Step 4), Broadfields United, Flackwell Heath, Harefield United, Milton Keynes Irish, Oxhey Jets, Long Crendon, Penn & Tylers Green, Kidlington Reserves all moved in the reshuffle and Irchester United (relegated to Step 7). The reshuffle has also seen the return to the SSML for Biggleswade United, Cockfosters, Hoddesdon Town, Potton United and St Panteleimon while Colney Heath return having been relegated from Step 4. Joining the SSML this season in Division One are Eaton Socon, Lutterworth Athletic, Moulton, Northampton ON Chenecks and Rugby Borough. While new to Division Two this campaign we welcome AFC Caddington, Leighton Town Development and Potton United Development. May I wish all the SSML Management Committee, all the SSML clubs and their hard working volunteers all the best for the coming season.

TUESDAY 2nd AUGUST PREMIER DIVISION Title favourites Manchester City AKA Leighton Town got their season off to a perfect start with a 3-0 home success against last season’s Division One champions Stotfold, the game attracted the biggest crowd of the night, 323. Last season’s Division One promotion play-off winners Shefford Town & Campton also enjoyed a winning start as they defeated visiting Hoddesdon Town 3-0 on their return to the SSML after four years in the Essex Senior League. For the other returning clubs to the SSML Premier Division it was a night of mixed fortunes, Biggleswade United won 2-0 at Arlesey Town while St Panteleimon drew 3-3 at Crawley Green. Alas for Cockfosters, Colney Heath and Potton United it was a losing start on their return, ‘Fosters’ were beaten 0-2 at home by London Colney, the visitors goalkeeper saving a first half penalty and being sent-off in the second period, ‘Heath’ went down to a solitary goal at Harpenden Town while Potton were beaten at home by Dunstable Town, the visitors winning 2-0.

Elsewhere a stunning late free kick proved to be the only goal as hosts Leverstock Green defeated Risborough Rangers, Tring Athletic edged out visiting Ardley United by the odd goal in three, all the goals coming in the second half. The night’s other action saw the preverbal game of ‘two halves’ as hosts Aylesbury Vale Dynamos found themselves 0-2 down at the interval against Baldock Town, however following the ‘hair-dryer’ interval chat the hosts turned things around to win 3-2, Dynamos obviously suffer first night nerves as 12 months ago they were 0-3 down before drawing 3-3 with Holmer Green.

Halstead Town FC Club History

The club was formed in 1879 following a meeting of 16 "interested gentlemen" in the Town Hall. In the early years friendlies were played against local villages before the club became members of the North Essex League in 1894.The first trophy of note was winning the Essex Junior Cup in 1902, beating Chingford 2-0 in the final at Chelmsford.

During the early years of the century the club competed in the Halstead & District League and also the Haverhill & District League. They played at various grounds in the town including Three Gates, Ravens Meadow, King George playing field, Courtaulds Sports Ground and Coggeshall Pieces.

In 1947 they won the Essex Junior Cup again, beating Eton Manor 6-3 at Grays. In the following year they moved to their present ground at Rosemary Lane which had been developed from parts of three fields. In 1949, the clubhouse was opened and the 500-seater stand was added a year later.

Halstead then joined the Essex & Suffolk Border League, finishing joint runners-up to Sudbury in 1955. Three years later, under Bob Curry Snr, they landed the Championship as well as the League Cup, beating Lakenheath 11-4 on aggregate in the final.

Four Border League titles, six runners-up places and four League Cup victories were amongst the honours that followed before the club moved up to the Essex Senior League in 1980. In this league, two third places and League Cup runners-up spot were achieved.

In 1988 Town joined the newly formed Jewson League First Division, from where player-manager Dennis Longhorn led the club to promotion to the Premier Division and the final of the League Cup In 1992 Keith Martin was appointed manager with Ian Phillips as coach, and the club went from strength to strength.

They were pipped by a point for the title, but landed the Essex Senior Trophy, beating Canvey Island 2-0 at Braintree.

The following season 1994/95 they took the title by seven points from Wroxham, and followed up with the title again in 1995/96, this time with Ian Philips in charge. For good measure they took the League Cup as well, beating Fakenham 4-0 in the final at Diss.

Steve Parnell, who lifted the club to a promising seventh spot, ended a disappointing spell with Danny Greaves in charge and then Terry Benson was appointed manager. With only one win in the first 12 games, he then departed and Shaun Bailey took over the reins.

Due to work commitments, Shaun left and was replaced by the Paul Grimsey, formerly with Sudbury Town. Working with very limited finances and resources, his first season ended with the relegation to division one. One year later, Andy Clark joined as assistant manager, and together they were able to land the Division One League and Cup double.

They also won the Uttlesford Charity Cup, overcoming Stansted at Leyton Orient's ground at Brisbane Road.

Season 2003-2004 proved to be a very satisfying one; Town ended up in seventh place and reached the Essex Senior Cup semi-final before being beaten by Aveley. Paul Grimsey then handed over the reins to Andy Clark, who added a professional touch to the proceedings. His second in command was Gary Harvey, with keeper Lloyd Pentney also playing an important part.

Season 2004-05 was another excellent season with Town finishing in third position in the league and winning the League Cup for the second time, beating Histon Reserves 3-1. They also reached the final of the Essex Senior Cup before going down 0-1 after extra time to a very good Thurrock side.

The next season was a very turbulent affair, with high hopes of success early in the season replaced with a battle against relegation by the end. Off field problems saw the break up of the complete first team squad, and also the departure of manager Andy Clark. Mitchell Springett took over in charge but was forced to leave due to ill health.

Under 18's manager Tony Kinsella was appointed early in 2006, and with a young and inexperienced side made continual improvements until safety was assured on the final game of the season. The following season, though, the club was unable to fend off relegation.

In 2007, Jody Brown, joined from Tiptree United, and using the experience he gained from working with Colchester United youth players, kept a youthful team in the promotion race until pipped for promotion by Whitton United.

The following year, some new faces were brought in and promotion was on the horizon again. However, Lady Luck did not smile on Halstead and again we missed out on promotion, this time on goal difference to Debenham.

In 2010, Halstead reached the final of Division One KO Cup, losing 1-2 to Clacton and also suffered an extra-time defeat by Ryman league team, Tilbury, in the final of the East Anglian Trophy.

At the start of the 2010-11 season, manager, Jody Brown decided to stand down and with the resulting uncertainty many of the previous season’s players moved on to other clubs. Rob Munro, previously with Haverhill Rovers, was drafted in as a short-term stand-in replacement and a decision was made that the club would pursue a youth policy.

The team that started the season was a mixture of players from the previous year, with some recruits who had moved over from Haverhill and a number of academy trainees.

Initially, results were hard to come by and the team found themselves near the bottom of the league. In November, Jimmy Holder took over the reins as manager, his fourth such stint for the club, and the team began to find its feet and climb up the table. Helped by four victories in the final five games the team eventually finished in 11th position.

The following season the club had a measure of success in the FA Vase, securing victories against two clubs from higher divisions before being eliminated, and they ended the season a respectable 6th place in the league.

By the start of 2012-13 season, the league had new sponsors and a new name. Formerly the Ridgeons League it was now to be known as the Thurlow Nunn League. At this time a new name also appeared on the bench for Halstead with the recruitment of Mark Benterman as assistant manager. Mark, who as a player had spells with Peterborough United and Chelmsford City was previously manager at Maldon St Mary's. At the end of the season he was promoted to team manager with his predecessor, Jimmy Holder, remaining on the bench as his assistant.

In Benterman's first season as manager, 2013-14, the team finished 6th in the league and also brought some silverware to the club by virtue of a hard-fought, 4-3 victory at Witham Town in the final of the Tolleshunt D'Arcy trophy.

This brought the trophy back to Rosemary Lane for the first time since 1997.

Another success for the club was the recently formed Vets team who remained unbeaten throughout the season and won the North Essex Veterans league at the first attempt.

Despite this, the club's focus was still on gaining promotion to the Thurlow Nunn Premier League. The following season was disappointing but a strong challenge was made during the 2015-16 season, with the club still in with a chance of promotion until the very last game. However, on that fateful day results went against the club and the final league table showed the Humbugs, as they were now known, in 4th spot, one place below the promotion places.

During this season, changes occurred off the field. Jimmy Holder stood down as chairman and in his place Darren Mitchell took over the hot seat, joined by some new additions to the committee, and it was decided that work should be started to improve the ground and facilities. The clubhouse was completely modernised, showers updated and thanks to assistance from new sponsors, Milbank Concrete, the external walkways and terracing was greatly improved.

The 2016-17 season is one that will be remembered for the exciting FA Cup run which saw Halstead beat two teams from higher divisions. Firstly Newmarket Town from the Thurlow Nunn Premier League were beaten 2-1 at the newlynamed Milbank Stadium before Halstead travelled to the other side of Essex for a sensational 3-2 victory at Ryman League side, Thurrock FC. The reward for this was a tie at near neighbours, AFC Sudbury and over 100 Humbugs supporters made the short trip across the county border to see the encounter. On the day, however, the home side, who play their football in a league 3 steps higher than Halstead, were just too good and the FA Cup dream ended with a 6-0 defeat.

Nevertheless, the endeavour and application of the players, together with the conduct of the visiting supporters did themselves and the club proud.

Later the same season, Mark Benterman left the role of manager and was replaced by Mark McLean with Pete Travers as his assistant.

For season 2018-19 the Football Association made changes to the structure of the Eastern Counties league and Halstead Town joined a new league, the Thurlow Nunn First Division South. In their first season in this league, the club challenged for first spot all season but unfortunately fell away towards the end and eventually finished 3rd.

The club celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2019.

Halstead Town have had a prolonged period in Division 1 but this season (22/23) we see our return to Step 5 after 15 years, albeit in the Essex Senior league which we haven’t graced for 24 years. The return coming via the play-off’s at the end of the 2021/22 season in which we overcame great odds to secure a 2-1 victory at Buckhurst Hill

Leverstock Green FC History & Honours 1919 - 1921

28th August 1920 - the following note on Leverstock Green’s Football Club appeared in the Hemel Hempstead Gazette: Mr.. L.R. Seabrook is this year the Secretary of the Leverstock Green Football Club whose headquarters will be at “The Leather Bottle”. Last year’s secretary Mr.. D. Cox is assistant secretary; H. Gentle is Captain and A. Hobbs “vice”. The club are anticipating a good season and have entered the following competitions: West Hertfordshire League (Div.II), Minor Cup, Webster Cup and the Hertfordshire Junior Cup. EJA Peter Peters Cup Final Wednesday 11th May vs. Welwyn Garden City The Under-15s ended their season with a deserved trophy as they lifted the EJA Peter Peters Cup on Wednesday night.

The Leverstock side earned the trophy with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Welwyn Garden City U15 in Wednesday night’s final played at Ware F.C. There were early chances for the Green side, with Joe Sadler’s free kick bringing a great save out of the WGC keeper on 12 minutes, and Shay Kelly heading over the bar from the resulting corner. In the 16th minute Lucas Georgiou set up a chance for Josh Weidner, but he shot wide.

The goal came in the 30th minute, as Georgiou got on the end of a free kick with a looping header that came down off the bar. A defender tried to clear off the line but the linesman flagged to indicate that the ball had crossed the line.

There was almost a second goal five minutes into the second half when Sadler hit a fierce shot from distance, which the keeper did well to tip over the bar. However, over the last half-hour of the game the long season started to take its toll on the Leverstock side, as they looked out on their feet. The side had to dig very deep under constant pressure from the Welwyn side, which had a couple of agonising near misses. Green keeper Freddie Burroughs was very impressive, often having to come off his line to thwart breakaways from the Welwyn side.

A long period of stoppage time saw several Leverstock players go down suffering with cramp, but they held out until the end to claim a well-deserved trophy at the end of a season where they were just piped by Berkhamsted to the U15 Brown Division title.

Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons.

At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs.

This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted.

The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
