Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Leverstock Green 1 Milton Keynes Irish 0 Saturday 5th March 2022 Hot on the heels of winning their first home league game for months last Saturday, Leverstock Green won another one. Again a single goal was enough to win the game, but this week it came early in the game. It turned out to be a hard-fought three points in difficult wet and windy conditions, against a Milton Keynes Irish side that played very well and had the bulk of the chances in the game. Manager Fergus Moore was away at the wedding of goalkeeping coach Darren Bonfield, and Leverstock’s regular goalkeeper Alfie Bonfield was also at his father’s wedding, so there was a debut in goal for new signing Tautis Poniskaitis from Burnham. The Lithuanian gave an outstanding display, keeping out a number of good efforts from the visitors, and was named man of the match. Assistant manager Scott McGleish was also unavailable today, so coaches Paul Marks and AJ Findlay took charge of the team and had a successful debut in management. The only goal of the game came in the 10th minute, originating from an MK defender unwisely trying a backheeled flick in his own half. The ball went straight to Rawn Seale, who spotted the run of Adam Page, and Seale threaded the ball perfectly into the path of Page, who slotted past keeper Jack Taylor to notch his first goal for the club. The goal had been somewhat against the run of play, with the visitors having had the bulk of the play, although not yet producing anything to trouble Poniskaitis. MK had a good chance in the 33rd minute when a square ball from the left found Dominic Lawless six yards out, but he shot over the bar. Three minutes later at the other end a cross from Elgeniy Daalberg caused some problems in the MK box, but neither Dan Pett nor Seale could force the ball home. On 41 minutes Poniskaitis made his first great save of the game, an acrobatic dive to keep out a shot from Steve Brooks one-handed. Two minutes later Leverstock were denied at the other end as Taylor dived down low to turn away a glancing header from Dan Weeks. In first half stoppage time Poniskaitis was in action again, dealing well with a long-range effort from Oliver Coleman. Leverstock were attacking down the slope in the second half, but with the strong wind and the rain against them it gave them little advantage. Again it was the visitors who were playing most of the football, winning numerous corners, but being unable to break the dogged Green resistance. In the 51st minute a header from a corner was heading for the top corner of the net but Jack Allen got up to head it over the bar. Five minutes later Coleman had a effort from a free kick outside the box which was looping up towards the top corner after a deflection off Paplamin Jawara, but Poniskaitis pulled off another great save to tip it over the bar. A pass from Jawara gave Daalberg a clear sight of goal in the 69th minute, but he couldn’t keep his shot under the bar. Three minutes later Seale had an effort from a narrow angle which brought a save out of Taylor. However, for the most part Leverstock were very much on the back foot in the closing stages, but kept their concentration and shape to the end to claim another important three points that lifts them back up to 5th place in the league. Further plus points were the return of both Lewis Collins and Ethan Mooney from injury, both coming off the bench in the second half. Leverstock Green (1) 1 (Page 10) Team: 1. Tautis Poniskaitis, 2. THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE
Saturday 5th March
SATURDAY HEADLINES Saturday brought about 74 goals from the 19 games (an average of 3.89 per game). Derek Asamoah (New Salamis) hat trick. Saturday Stats: 19 games played of which 11 were home wins, 7 away wins and 1 draw. PREMIER DIVISION Risborough Rangers retained their one point lead at the top of the standings with a 4-1 win at Broadfields United while closest challengers New Salamis hammered second from bottom Holmer Green 8-0 in North London. Hadley moved up to third place following their hard fought solitary goal success at Harefield United while it was a solitary goal win that took Leverstock Green up to fifth against visiting Milton Keynes Irish. Elsewhere bottom club Crawley Green were beaten 1-3 at home by Flackwell Heath and Dunstable Town enjoyed a 3-0 home win against struggling London Colney. The day’s other Premier Division fixtures saw 2-0 away wins and reports on both Arlesey Town v Ardley United and Leighton Town v Tring Athletic can be found later in the ramblings. DIVISION ONE Table toppers Stotfold took another step closer to the title with Saturday’s 3-1 home success against bottom club Irchester United, the win takes the Bedfordshire club six points clear at the summit although the performance on the day brought about criticism from their manager who felt they were way below their best. Second placed Winslow United lost ground after their 1-1 home draw with another of the playoff hopefuls Long Crendon, the visitors dropping to seventh in the standings as a result. Wellingborough Whitworth and Bedford both recorded home wins to maintain their play-off hopes, WW defeating Langford 5-1 while it was an odd goal in three win for Bedford against lowly London Tigers. Elsewhere Amersham Town won the big battle at the other end of the table beating visiting Burton Park Wanderers 4-2 while Penn & Tylers Green enjoyed a 3-1 win on their travels at Buckingham Athletic. DIVISION TWO Aston Clinton made it nine wins from their last nine games with a home success over Sarratt, however they were made to work hard for the three points winning by the odd goal in seven. The day’s other Division Two fixture saw Totternhoe win for the first time in five games as their ended Codicote’s run of five winning league games with a 2-1 win in Bedfordshire. DIVISION TWO CUP First Round Holders Old Bradwell United booked their quarter-final spot in this season’s Division Two Cup when they won 3-1 in the ‘Bradwell Derby’ against visiting New Bradwell St Peter, OBU will now travel to Eynesbury United as they attempt to repeat their 2018-19 cup final success (the last two competitions being postpone due to Covid). Elsewhere Pitstone & Ivinghoe withstood a second half fight back from Risborough Rangers Development in their first round tie, the tie switched to Pitstone due to an unplayable pitch at Risborough saw P&I 3-0 up at the break before two unanswered goals from RR caused a few anxious moments before the final whistle. The day’s other tie saw Milton Keynes College Football Academy progress to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 home win against Buckingham United, the Academy side will now travel to Pitstone & Ivinghoe in the quarter-finals.

AND FINALLY COMMITTEE AWAY DAYS I went to Arlesey yesterday for my first visit this season, and was looking forward to reading their excellent programme. I was disappointed inasmuch that it is now on-line only, due mainly to lack of personnel, and time etc. How many clubs these days have insufficient volunteers to assist in running clubs? Anyway I was at Arlesey to present Ardley with their trophy for January Team of the Month. I was really impressed by their manager Julian McCalmon who seemed really pleased to receive the award, and he was a credit to their club. He even bought me drink afterwards which I was really pleased with! Although after all the rain during the week, plus the fact that Baldock played on it on Wednesday, the pitch was heavy, but no worse at the end of the game than at the beginning. It was pretty even during the first half, although Ardley had more possession, but seemed to run out of ideas when they got to the penalty area. Arlesey though had the better chances, with the best of them coming in the 15th minute when a superb cross-field ball put a forward with a clear run on goal. Out of seemingly nowhere a defender was on the scene who cleared the danger. Although 0-0 at the break it didn't have the look of a goalless game. Then I remembered Mike's report last week when Ardley had enough chances to score but succumbed to a 93rd minute goal! Ardley created their best chance in the 53rd minute but the chance was blasted over the bar. However a goal did eventually arrive in the 69th minute when number 7 (Declan Benjamin) was put through on the right hand side, and shot low and hard into the far side giving keeper Ryan Hilliard no chance at all. Two minutes later it was 0-2. Again Benjamin was the scorer, but this time he ran through the middle, and wasn't challenged by anyone, before firing home low from 16 yards. Unfortunately this seemed to knock the stuffing out of a patchwork Arlesey side, and the game was won. Although there were 5 bookings, and one sin bin, it wasn't in my opinion a dirty game, although it was physical. Hopefully Arlesey will soon have their injured players back shortly and also have a larger attendance than the 69 who braved the extremely cold day. The Roving Ref Bob Flight was at Leighton Town and sends the following report: Promotion chasing Leighton Town entertained a rejuvenated Tring Athletic at Bell Close in front of another large crowd of some 450+ spectators. In a dominant first half, Tring scored both their goals to dent the home team title aspirations. Tring began well and it was no surprise when Ronan Hutchins cut in from the left side of the penalty area to score past the home keeper Connor Coulson on 15 minutes. Town had their chances but one shot went just over the bar and another effort was blocked almost on the goal line. But the half belonged to Tring as an effort on goal was deflected narrowly wide and another shot was cleared off the home goal line. The second Tring goal came as a bit of a surprise to most in the ground and perhaps also the scorer Godlove Oppong received the ball just outside of the Town penalty area and his looping shot cleared everyone, including Town keeper Coulson, and went into the far corner of the Town net on 38 minutes. Thus Tring went in at half time 2-0 ahead. Town started the second half with determination and they began to dominate play as Tring sat back on their lead. An early chance from a free kick was headed over and they had a series of free and corner kicks. However, they could not find that final touch to trouble the Tring goal. Tring looked dangerous on the break but they failed to score again. With time running out, Town staged a final flourish but once again the Tring defence held firm. This was a good game to watch for the neutral but the result does little for Leighton but continues the recent revival at Tring. The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 298 votes cast is: Tring Athletic 48.7% Dunstable Town 31.9% Amersham Town 10.7% Aston Clinton 8.7%

Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Oxhey Jets 2 Leverstock Green 2 Saturday 12th March 2022 Leverstock Green looked to be the way to a third straight league win as they held a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time, but Oxhey Jets made a strong comeback in the second half and deservedly claimed a point with a lastminute equaliser. Fergus Moore had something of a depleted squad for this game, with five players from last week’s game unavailable for various reasons, plus the departure of Paplamin Jawara to divisional rivals New Salamis. On the plus side there was a debut for new signing Nagheeb Ibrahim from Uxbridge. Leverstock made a strong start to the game, with Adam Page heading over the bar from an Ethan Mooney corner in the 4th minute. Two minutes later a pass from Ryan Carruthers put Page through on goal, and Page neatly slotted the ball between the legs of keeper Bradley Shaw to put the Green side into an early lead. With a gusty wind in their favour, Leverstock continued to have much the best of the first half. In the 17th minute Mooney had a chance to shoot, but instead laid the ball off to Page, who was this time denied by a save from Shaw. A minute later Rawn Seale hit a shot from distance, which was straight at Shaw. The second Leverstock goal in the 24th minute was something of a gift from the Oxhey defence, as a toocasual pass across the face of their own box was intercepted by Kian Wilkes, and with Shaw out of his goal, Wilkes was able to take a few steps before lining up a shot into the empty net before Shaw could scramble back. There was another chance on 33 minutes when a flick-on from Seale put Page through on goal again, but his early shot was wide of the target. Four minutes later Shaw had to punch away a shot from Seale as Leverstock threatened a third goal to put the game away. Leverstock were threatening again early in the second half, with Rio Beach making a run into the box before hitting a shot across goal and wide in the 48th minute. Ibrahim went close in the 62nd minute with a shot that took a deflection and missed the target by inches. However, Oxhey had been coming more into the game, and they looked even stronger after a double substitution in the 63rd minute. Their increasing pressure paid off when they pulled a goal back in the 67th minute. A cross from the left found the unmarked Sean Giordmaina, who was unable to get an effort on goal, but pulled the ball back across goal to substitute Kristian Swaby, who fired a shot into the corner of the net. Over the closing ten minutes Leverstock had their backs to the wall against a constant stream of pressure from the Oxhey side. There were occasional threats on the break, but lack of control on a difficult pitch let them down at the vital moments. Leverstock still held their lead going into the 90th minute, but a long throw into the box was not cleared, and a looping header from substitute Nathan Page went in at the far post to level the scores at 2-2. Even then Leverstock had chances to win the game in stoppage time. A shot from Carruthers was cleared off the line by defender Harry Brady. With seconds remaining Mooney was clean through on goal and had a chance of a shot, but instead chose to square the ball to the oncoming Seale, and it was cut out by a defender. In the end they had to be content with a point. Leverstock Green (2) 2 (Page 6, Wilkes 24) Team: 1. Tautis Poniskaitis, 2. Brad Robinson, 3. Rio Beach, 4. Scott McGleish, 5. Paul Marks, 6. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Cup Tring Athletic 2 Leverstock Green 1 Tuesday 15th March 2022 Leverstock Green exited the Premier Division Cup at the first round stage, as they were beaten 2-1 at Tring Athletic in Tuesday night’s tie, which was finally played at the third time of asking. Tring made the stronger start to the match, with Leverstock keeper Tautis Poniskaitis having to save a shot from Olly Butler in the opening minute. In the 10th minute they opened the scoring through Ronan Hutchins, who picked up the ball from a poor defensive header and drilled home an emphatic shot from outside the box that gave Poniskaitis no chance. Leverstock then had a series of good chances. In the 13th minute Rawn Seale got on the end of a Dan Pett corner but couldn’t get his shot on target. Two minutes later a pass from Pett put Seale in behind a defence that was running away from goal, but again Seale’s shot was off target. Jack Allen hit a shot just wide in the 17th minute, and in the 26th minute both Seale and Allen had efforts in a goalmouth scramble following a corner, but neither could force the ball home. The equaliser finally arrived in the 33rd minute, and it was a bolt from the blue as Ryan Carruthers received the ball 30 yards out and struck a ferocious dipping shot that flew over the outstretched arm of keeper Jake Alley into the net. The scores were level at 1-1 after an evenly contested first half, but it only took six minutes of the second half for Tring to go back in front. A long ball forward found Allen in two minds whether to clear it or play it back, and that moment of hesitation was pounced on by Butler, who ran on to slot the ball past Poniskaitis for a 2-1 lead. That proved to be enough for Tring as Leverstock pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but were unable to break down a well-organised Tring defence, with Alley not being required to make a serious save during the half. Leverstock Green (1) 1 (Carruthers 33) Team: 1. Tautis Poniskaitis, 2. Brad Robinson, 3. Rio Beach, 4. Dan Weeks, 5. Jack Allen (18. Scott McGleish 81 mins), 6. Kian Wilkes, 7. Ryan Carruthers (12. Flackwell Heath FC Club History
Flackwell Heath FC was founded in 1907 and the club joined the High Wycombe and District League for its inaugural season. The Heathens proved to be a major force in local football, having won twelve Wycombe League championship titles and fourteen High Wycombe Senior Challenge Cup finals. In the 1950’s Flackwell joined the Great Western Combination League and won this league twice before returning to the Wycombe League. In 1956 the club moved to its current home, the new ground being donated by the Wilks family. Through the 60s and 70's the club continued their success on and off field and the new clubhouse was built in 1974 as the first stage of their rise into senior football. In 1975 The Heathens won the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup and the Reading Senior Cup. In 1977 the club achieved Senior status and moved up into the Hellenic League Division One. Promotion to the Premier Division was achieved at the first attempt. After five seasons in this league, during which time floodlights were installed at Wilks Park, Flackwell were elected into the Athenian League. In 1984 they joined the expanding Isthmian League. The clubs first season in this competition saw them playing in Division Two (North) and against some tough opposition they finished in a respectable eighth position. The following season Flackwell was switched to Division Two (South) where life turned out to be even tougher. At the end of season 1990-91, after finishing below mid-table, The Heathens found themselves placed in the newly formed Ryman League Division Three. At this stage the club installed a 150 seater stand to stay in senior football, and new home changing rooms were built to comply with new ground gradings. For the next 10 years the club carried out further ground improvements and they established themselves in senior football. In 2002/03 for the first time in their history Flackwell reached the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup losing 4-1 at home against Crawley and finished third in the newly formed Ryman League Division Two, the highest position achieved to date. In season 2004/05 The Heathens reached the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the second time in three years, this time losing 3-0 at Ryman Premier Division Billericay Town and were runners-up in the Ryman League Associate Members Cup, losing 2-1 after extra time to Division Two champions Ilford on their own ground. Flackwell finished fourth in Ryman League Division Two in 2005/06, narrowly missing out on promotion.
After the end of 2006/07 the FA reorganised the non-league pyramid and we were due to be relegated into the South Midlands Spartan League until Barking and East Ham United went out of business and we were given the opportunity to take their place in the Ryman Division One (North). Unfortunately we finished bottom of the league and were relegated into the Hellenic Premier Division for season 2008/09. The 2014/15 season saw us gain promotion into the Southern League Division 1. However, a late move by the Southern League of us from the Central Division into the South West Division meant FHFC were unable to accept promotion and we stayed in the Hellenic League Premier Division for season 2015-16. 2014-15 also saw us with places in the final of the Berks & Bucks Trophy (losing to Windsor FC) and the High Wycombe Senior Challenge Cup (winning against Penn & Tylers Green FC). Earlier that season we reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup losing to Conference side Weston Supermare 4-1. For the first time in club history we also reached the last sixteen of the FA Vase losing 3-2 to Shaw Lane Aquaforce. 2015/16 season under the continued management of Graham Malcolm assisted by Paul Shone saw us finish 3rd in the Hellenic League also winning 3 cup finals – the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy (against Newport Pagnell FC), the Uhlsport Challenge Cup (against Brackley Town Saints) and the Wycombe Senior Cup (against Pitstone and Ivinghoe FC). After Graham Malcolm's decision to move to Spain, Paul Shone took over the managerial role assisted by Sean Kelleher. Unfortunately, this combination did not work out and in November 2017 they were replaced by Marcus Richardson, formerly of Highmoor Ibis FC, assisted by Fabian Coultress. Marcus had to start rebuilding the team from scratch, bringing in lots of young players and former Youth team players. That season the team finished a respectable 5th, following with 8th position in 2018/19. The past 2 seasons have been limited by Covid-19 restrictions with our 2019/20-season finish of 9th, with games in hand, being declared null and void. The past season was similarly curtailed, leaving FHFC top of the Hellenic League having only lost one game. However, FA promotions and restructuring using a points per game system saw us finishing 4th over the previous 2 seasons, thereby missing out on promotion for 2021/22. The restructuring has seen us take up a place in the Spartan South Midlands League, Premier Division. This disappointment was tempered by a very successful run in the 2020/21 FA Vase. FHFC reached the Quarter Finals for the 1st time in their history finally losing to US Portsmouth FC 2-0.

Leverstock Green FC History & Honours October 1908 Friday 23rd October 1908: Ringing the changes from entertainments produced with the intention of raising funds for the Parish Room, a concert in aid of the Football Club was held in the schoolroom. The Gazette reported: “The room was filled. The programme was arranged by the Hon Sec. Mr. W.W. Dell, and although somewhat varied included some splendid talent which was thoroughly appreciated. The songs contributed by Miss Belsham,,, and the violin solos by Miss G. Finch (Watford) were well received and encores demanded on each occasion. Mr. A. Palmers songs received applause, as did the recitations by Miss J. Young. The humorous side of the programme was entrusted to Mr. Will Howard who kept the audience in a continual state of merriment. “The Village Pump” was one of the best, was one of his best, the character of an old countryman being carried out in a very clever manner. The accompanist was Mr. Bernard Cox.” (There then followed a full programme listing.) [Gazette October 24th 1908:] 7th November 1908: The local paper carried a report in the sports section with the headline “: LEVERSTOCK GREEN & DISTRICT CUP COMPETITION. LEVERSTOCK GREEN v. SARRATT.” the paper then went on to record that Leverstock Green played Sarratt at Sarratt in a this new competition. Sadly no more details were given.

VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB 2021-22 Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Alan Brett, Colin Bull, Bill Dawes, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Phil Gray, P Isaacs, Tony Smart, Roger Stokes and Sue Hollick As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements. Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place.
Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons. At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs. This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted. The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
