Dunstable Town FC are now in their 139th year. A former home to George Best, Jeff Astle, Kerry Dixon, and more recently, Peter Kioso, the Club can boast a rich heritage, a proud past and nowadays the honour of being only the 46th club in the UK to be a completely fan owned club run by its fans as a Community Benefit Society (CBS)
The Club is a legal entity & is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and supported as a CBS by the Football Supporters’ Association.
The Club now operates as a social enterprise. Between Monday and Friday, we run five different groups for people in our local community who want to improve their levels of fitness, increase their social support networks, and enjoy a safe space while in recovery from mental ill health.
The Club is now in its fifth year of supporting the work of Mind BLMK (Beds, Luton & Milton Keynes) as well as becoming part of the CALM Collective (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and supporting local peer support group, Minds2gether.
The Club has a specialist Mental Health Advocate who works with local mental health services and charities.
The move to become a CBS was necessary to ensure the Club survived. The financial effects of Covid saw the Club’s income halved and the difficult decision taken to fold the U23’s Development Team at the end of the 2019 20 season.
With no matchday income from the bar or food sales and no clubhouse to hire out, the Club relies almost totally on gate receipts, sponsorship, fundraising and prize money for its income.
The running of the Club was passed to the fans in 2017 after the wholesale departure of the Board, coaching staff, and all but two of the players. A consortium of three local businessmen
offered to save the Club, but on condition they would seek voluntary relegation from the Premier Division of the Southern League.
A group of 15 fans took over the running of the Club in order to keep it in the Premier Division of the Southern League and despite successive relegations the model of being a members’ run Club proved sufficiently popular for the decision to become a CBS to be backed unanimously by the fans.
Fans now have the opportunity to become owners of the Club & buy a single share in the Club and receive exclusive discounts with local traders under the Blue Card scheme.
This model of Fan Ownership ensures that the Club will always stay in the hands of its supporters and cannot be taken over by one single investor determined to ride the non league financial rollercoaster.
The Club now has over 130 individual owners, over half of whom voted at the AGM to elect the Club’s Directors and to decide season ticket prices and ownership fees.
The Club appointed Joe Deeney as Head Coach in early October 2021. Joe had managed at Step 2 with Hemel Hempstead Town FC and had been Asst Manager at Oxford City. He brought with him an experienced back room team including Kyle Durcan as his number 2.
Sitting bottom of the table on appointment, Joe & Kyle changed the playing squad and the culture of the playing side, went on a 14 game unbeaten run, and finished the season in a very respectable 9th place.
Attendances rose by over 50% as the Deeney & Durcan effect grew with last season’s average attendance of 189 being higher than at any time during the Step 3 and Step 4 seasons.
The Club is ambitious and wants to play at the highest level of football it is prudent and sustainable to do so.

Leverstock Green got their league season back on track as they ended a run of three straight draws with a 3 0 home victory over Shefford Town & Campton. It was a well deserved win for Fergus Moore’s side, who controlled the game throughout and netted three times while keeping a clean sheet at the other end.
The visitors won four corners in quick succession in the opening minutes of the game, but the Green defence defended them all well. Ibrahim Nagheeb had Leverstock’s first effort at goal in the 6th minute with a shot which was saved and held onto by keeper Kyle Forster.
The scoring was opened in the 10th minute. Chris Blunden received the ball on the halfway line and pushed forward before playing it out wide to Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica, who ran on before returning the ball to Blunden on the edge of the box. Blunden then shook off the attention of two defenders to pick his spot and send a superb shot into the top corner of the net.
The lead was doubled in the 17th minute. George Mitchell Gears curled in a cross from near the left touchline. Alvin Kyemereh got on the end of it and controlled it with his first touch before slotting it under Forster with his second touch to put Leverstock well in control of the game. There might have been a third goal in the 27th minute as Stefanoaica connected with a Dan Pett free kick, but his header went over the bar.
Leverstock continued to impress in the second half and went close again in the 47th minute as Kyemereh met a Pett free kick with a far post header that brought a good save out of Forster. Lewis Collins was denied a goal in the 62nd minute by the offside flag, and four minutes later slid in to meet a Blunden cross but couldn’t get his effort on target.
Shefford had more of the ball in the second half than they had in the first, but the Leverstock defence kept their shape and discipline throughout, with Bobby Armstrong having a very good game, and the visitors were unable to force a save out of Austin Byfield all afternoon.
Leverstock’s performance deserved a third goal, and it arrived in the 82nd minute as Blunden crossed from the bye line and man of the match Mitchell Gears finished from close range to leave both players with a goal and an assist each.
Leverstock are still unbeaten after seven league games, and they face another tough challenge next week at home to Dunstable Town, the only other unbeaten side in the division.

They are sponsoring the Under 18 and First Team warm up tops. Our thanks to Gary and Karl.
On a day that saw me at the Mill watching the mighty Torpoint Athletic win again it was business as usual in the SSML. 603 turned out for the ‘derby’ between Dunstable Town and Leighton Town. Real Bedford FC continue to push aside anybody in their way. Totternhoe hit seven on the road while Moulton FC net six on their travels in the County Cup.
Weekend Stats: 28 games played of which 15 were home wins, 9 away wins and 4 draws.
Weekend Stats: The 28 games produced a total of 93 goals, an average of 3.32 per game. Dumedi Okoye (Moulton FC) and Daniel Lambeth (Totternhoe) both netting hat tricks.
The top two remain the same in the Premier Division despite neither of them wining, leaders Crawley Green were held to a 1 1 draw at home against Potton United while Stotfold followed up last week’s win at Crawley with a 1 0 success at second placed St Panteleimon, a result that lifts the visitors into fourth place. Dunstable Town climb to third following their 2 1 home win against neighbours Leighton Town in front of the season’s biggest crowd of 603 (more on this later in the ramblings). At the other end of the standings Arlesey Town climbed off the bottom with their first league win, winning 2 0 at London Colney, a result that sent the Hertfordshire club to the foot of the table while both Aylesbury Vale Dynamos and Colney Heath picked up a point following 1-1 draws, AVD held at home by Tring Athletic while Heath earned their point at Risborough Rangers. Elsewhere Biggleswade United edged out visiting Hoddesdon Town by the odd goal in five while Leverstock Green recorded an excellent 3 0 home success against Shefford Town & Campton. The days other action saw Baldock Town come out on top in their home clash with Harpenden Town, the hosts winning with a goal in each half.
Real Bedford FC opened up an eleven point lead at the top of Division One with their eleventh league win from eleven games as they ran out 4 1 winners at home against Winslow United while Eaton Socon climb to second after defeating visiting London Tigers by the odd goal in three. Letchworth Garden City Eagles continue to make progress up the table following their recent 3 0 win at struggling Raunds Town while Rugby Borough registered their fifth consecutive win when inflicting the first league defeat on Ampthill Town, the hosts winning by the odd goal in five in a game that saw them score all five goals. Elsewhere Amersham Town ran our 5-2 winners at home against Lutterworth Athletic, Northampton ON Chenecks edged out hosts Wellingborough Whitworth by a solitary goal and it was honours even as Buckingham Athletic were held 1 1 at home by Rushden & Higham United, the visitors levelling in the last minute
The two Northamptonshire Les Underwood Junior Cup ties saw one SSML side progress, Moulton FC came out on top in an all SSML tie, winning 6 1 at Burton Park Wanderers. The other tie saw Northampton Sileby Rangers suffer a 0 2 defeat at Desborough Town Reserves.
Thame United Reserves forgot about their league problems and progressed into the Second Round of the Oxfordshire Intermediate Cup with a 3 0 success at Oxfordshire Senior League side Sporting Headington Academicals.
Old Bradwell United surrendered the table topping position when they went down 1 2 at fellow title chasers Aston Clinton, the new leaders are Totternhoe who won 7 2 at bottom club The 61FC (Luton), the ‘Totts’ now have a three point cushion at the top. Leighton Town Development remain third after defeating visiting Tring Corinthians AFC 3 1 while New Bradwell St Peter remain fifth two points adrift of Aston Clinton following their 2 0 home success against Buckingham United. At the other end of the standings Potton United Development remain pointless after their seventh league defeat, going down by the odd goal in three at home against AFC Caddington while Risborough Rangers Development went down by the odd goal in three at the much-improved Codicote. Elsewhere Eynesbury United suffered a 0 2 defeat at Milton Keynes College Football Academy and Sarratt continued their recent fine run of form with a 2 0 success at Berkhamsted Raiders.
Bovingdon edged out visiting Pitstone & Ivinghoe by the odd goal in five in the First Round of the Division Two Cup, their reward is a trip to Leighton Town Development next month.
SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Dunstable Town and pens the following report: - The two Bedfordshire towns met at Creasey Park where Dunstable hosted Leighton in front of a bumper crowd of 603 spectators possibly a SSMFL record for a league game between two member clubs. Inexplicably, Leighton ran out in unfamiliar purple and white shirts instead of their usual red and white when there was no colour clash with the all blue strip of Dunstable! Dunstable began well and had an early chance that was deflected just wide of the goal. But this early pressure faded as Leighton grew into the match. Indeed, Leighton forced several corners and Dunstable had to thank their keeper for a great reflex save to deny Leon Lobjoit a certain goal. The opening goal however came for Dunstable and slightly against the run of play when Kyle Faulkner scored from the penalty spot on 19 minutes after a foul in the area by a Leighton defender. Dunstable had a couple of other chances, but they all went wide of the goal. Leighton battled back and saw shots either blocked, saved, or just go wide. Thus, an even half ended with a slim lead for the home team. The second half was much better for Leighton as they had the majority of the play forcing several corners and from one of these a chance was headed against the Dunstable crossbar. Just after another goal bound effort was blocked. But the inevitable goal was not long in coming when a pass from Lewis Toomey found Lobjoit who flicked the ball into the Dunstable net on 62 minutes. The crowd then expected Leighton to go on and get the winner, but it was Dunstable who took advantage of some casual defending to score again. On 65 minutes Tolv Ikuyinminu found himself completely alone in the Leighton box as he hit the ball past a stranded Xavier Comas in the visitors’ goal. Much of the remainder of the game was in the Dunstable half as they withstood an onslaught from Leighton, but they failed to find the crucial pass to threaten the home goal and a late great chance was headed wide of the goal. There was a goal mouth scramble right on full time, but the ball was cleared away. The efforts by Leighton were not helped by one of their players talking himself into the sin bin just before the final whistle. All in all, a great match to watch with Dunstable just about deserving the win over an off colour Leighton Town.
The Mad Scot, Bill Hamilton, was at Pancake Lane to see Leverstock Green continue their unbeaten run with a comprehensive 3 0 win over Shefford Town and Campton. The visitors appeared a little shell shocked after last week’s disappointing FA Cup defeat at Leicestershire side Anstey Nomads and found themselves two goals behind after just 16 minutes. Chris Blunden hit the first, followed by another fine strike from Alvin Kyeremeh. Play was free flowing throughout with Shefford’s efforts to step up the momentum frustrated by some excellently timed breaks by a confident Leverstock side riding on something of a high in these early weeks of the season. George Mitchell Gears wrapped things up with another impressive finish eight minutes from time. It all sets up an interesting clash with the Premier Division’s only other undefeated side Dunstable Town next Saturday.
The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 214 votes cast is: =
Leverstock Green 36.4%
Aston Clinton 30.8%
Totternhoe 18.2%
Rugby Borough 14.6%

Leverstock Green Football Club was formed around 1895. The first match reports appeared on January 4th, 1896, in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers.
The first competitive fixtures were reported during season 1908/1909 when the Club competed in Division Three of the West Herts League. Other clubs competing in the league at that time were: Abbots Langley, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Bushey Heath, Hagden Lane, Kings Langley and Potten End.
The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timber built changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960’s by the existing brick built clubhouse and changing rooms.
On the death of the Lord, certain parcels of land, including that on which the Football Club stood, fell to the Crown in lieu of death duties and is administered on its behalf by the Commission for New Towns, who have remained the Club’s landlords since that time, despite two unsuccessful attempts by the Club to buy the freehold.
The club remained members of the West Herts League until 1954 when it broadened its horizons and successfully applied to join the Herts County League.
By the mid 1970’s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail, and the installation of training lights.
The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years.
In 1991 the Club were accepted into the South Midlands League and had two highly successful seasons in the Premier Division before being forced to drop into the Senior Division, as floodlights were then not available. In 1996 the club finished in runners up position and the following season were the divisional champions but could not be promoted because floodlights had still not received approval from the Council.
Premier Division status was eventually regained in 2003, and the club is now the longest-standing current member of the division. The club’s highest finish in the Premier Division has been 4th, in season 2010/11, with top six finishes also being recorded in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2008/09.
Season 2010/11 also saw the club’s best ever run in the FA Vase, with wins over Welwyn Garden City, Enfield, Hullbridge Sports, Tunbridge Wells and Bemerton Heath Harlequins before defeat in the Fifth Round against Rye United. The club has twice reached the Third Round of the FA Vase, in seasons 2006/07 and 2018/19.
Leverstock Green entered the FA Cup for the first time in 2004, and the club’s best performance has been reaching the Second Round Qualifying, which was achieved in 2014/15, where we were beaten by Staines Town, and in 2018/19 where we were beaten by Dorking Wanderers.
County honours were won in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as the Herts Charity Shield was lifted, and the club were beaten finalists in the Herts Charity Cup in 2011/12. After finishing runners-up four times over the previous 12 years, The West Herts FA St Mary’s Cup was finally lifted for the first time in 2017/18 with victory over Berkhamsted in the final at Vauxhall Road.
Between 2005 and 2015 the club ran a successful Ladies’ Team, which rose from the Beds and Herts League into the Eastern Region Woman’s League, reaching the Premier Division in 2013.
The under 18 side competes in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. The team finished runners-up in their division in seasons 2010/11 and 2014/15, and in 2015/16 they reached the final of both the Brian Hitchings Cup and the Colwyn Cup, losing in both finals to Luton Town Cedars. Many players have made the step up from under-18 level to first team level, and those who have gone on to play much higher up the non league pyramid include Charlie Gorman (Eastbourne Borough), Luke Warner Eley (Royston Town, St Albans City) and Jonathan Lacey (Hemel Hempstead Town) who also represented the England non-league side in the Falklands while a Leverstock Green player.
The Pancake Lane ground has seen many improvements due to ever more stringent ground grading requirements. In 2007 the Peter Metcalfe changing rooms were built at a cost of £90,000. 2008 saw the refurbishment of the clubhouse to include new toilets and a new hospitality suite. In 2009 the concrete walkway was completed to cover three sides of the ground and a seated stand accommodating 113 spectators was installed.
Season 2018/19 was one of turmoil and sadness, as long serving fixture secretary Graham Smart passed away suddenly only weeks after taking on the role of interim chairman. A season which promised so much at the start ended with the club only securing Premier Division safety on the final day.
Emma Smart took over as chairman for season 2019/20, and with a new management team and a new spirit of optimism the club was on course for a safe mid table finish before the season was brought to a premature end by Covid 19. The management team of Matt Harding and Mick Vipond continued into the 2020/21 season, which again came to a premature end. For season 2021/22, a new management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Paul Marks has been appointed. The club has increased its commitment to youth development by joining the Eastern Junior Alliance and will be running an under15 side this season.
Three club stalwarts have received awards from the Football Association and the Herts FA for 50 years’ service to football. The first was Jim Matthews, affectionately known as “Macca”, who passed away at the age of 90 in 2006. The second was Bill Dawes in 2014, and the third was long serving club secretary Brian Barter in 2019. Brian stood down from his role as secretary in 2020, having twice been honoured with awards from the Spartan South Midlands League.

As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements.
Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place.
Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons.
At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter Step Play Offs.
This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted.
The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play Off Criteria
12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Colin Bull, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Roger Stokes
