Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99-year lease from the Council. The New Club house was formally open on 19th June, 1992 by then Luton Town manager, David Pleat.
The badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers, and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team.
In 2018 Luton Town FC and Crawley Green FC further enhanced their club partnership with the announcement that Crawley Green FC will play their home games at The Brache training ground from season 2018-2019. Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of the National League System, have been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium. Unfortunately, in that time they have failed to receive the support needed from Luton Borough Council, despite there being no cost involved for the Council. This decision has meant that they have had to ground share with Barton Rovers FC for 11 years now, to enable the team to continue to play at that level.
This is a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), means that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals.
Luton recently installed a brand-new all-weather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green will complete the remaining requirements. This will include new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen.
“In the past we have seen a number of ex-Crawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition, the recently transferred Tyreeq
Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system.
“A town the size of Luton needs a successful professional club, as well as teams playing in the national league pyramid”. This gives our talented youngsters a pathway to development, without having to go outside the borough to develop. “In addition, underneath these clubs is a large community hub, which affords lots of youngsters the opportunity to play football. These community hubs ensure all young people have the opportunity to participate in football in a safe supportive environment, which preserves the dignity and respect of the individual regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, disability, income and any other social deprivation. With Government statistics showing a concerning rise in childhood obesity throughout the UK, these community hubs encourage our children to stay active and engage in physical activity. This all helps promote health, self-confidence and importantly social cohesion, and hopefully leads to the wider benefits in raising standards.”
Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet said: “We see ourselves as guardians of elite football in our region and part of that responsibility is to help – wherever possible – other local, aspirational clubs develop and thrive, staying at the core of their roots. “The challenges faced at Crawley Green were difficult and, with the great relationship we’ve had over the years, having recruited numerous young players from their excellent development structure, we’re proud to help Crawley Green retain a local home for their competitive games, just as we are happy to utilise our existing training facility at perhaps the only time when it won’t get used.”
In recognition of his services to the community and sport, Crawley Green Sports & Social Club Chairman, Tony Talbot was awarded a BEM – British Empire Medal - in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List.
Finally, Crawley Green would like to sincerely thank all their programme advertisers, match ball and match day sponsors for their generous support throughout the season.

It was a third league win in a row for Leverstock Green as they overcame a strong Harpenden Town side in Saturday’s game at the Lords Builders Merchants Stadium. Suspension, illness, and injuries meant that it was a somewhat different looking side to last week’s. Goalkeeper Tautvydas Poniskaitis was drafted in to cover for the suspended Austin Byfield, and defenders George Alfieri and Joshua Yoane were brought in on loan from Hadley to play in defence, where Brad Robinson, Adrian Pitfield and Alvin Kyeremeh were all out injured. Skipper Dan Pett was also absent through illness. All three of the newcomers gave excellent performances.
Both sides were playing some good football in the early stages, but without much end product. Chris Blunden brought a good save out of visiting keeper Alex Desmond in the 11th minute but had already been flagged offside. George Mitchell-Gears had an effort from the edge of the box in the 20th minute which went just over the bar.
In the 42nd minute a pass from Alfieri put Ethan Mooney through on goal. Mooney squared for Blunden, but his shot was saved and he was flagged offside again. However, in the 44th minute a big header from Ryan Carruthers gave Blunden a run at goal. Blunden couldn’t get his shot away, but held onto the ball until support arrived, and squared into the six-yard box where Mitchell-Gears was there to stab home the opening goal.
Having scored just before half time, Leverstock added their second just after half time. A foul on Blunden gave Leverstock a free kick in a dangerous position 25 yards out, and just as he did last week, Ibrahim Nagheeb produced a superb strike into the corner of the net. It was also a third goal in successive games for Nagheeb.
However, just over a minute later Harpenden were back in the game. A cross from the left was palmed away by Poniskaitis, but the ball fell for Josh Setchell, who drove home a shot to pull the score back to 2-1.
For the remainder of the game it was end-to-end stuff. The nearest that Leverstock came to extending their lead was in the 76th minute when a header from a corner was well saved by Desmond. Harpenden had a couple of good chances from headers in the 77th and 80th minutes but both efforts were off target. A cross from Rio Beach in the 86th minute set up a shooting chance for Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica, but his well-hit effort was blocked. A minute later Harpenden had the ball flashing across the face of the Leverstock goal but with no-one on the end of it.
Leverstock used every tactic during stoppage time to run more seconds off the clock, and unlike recent games where they have surrendered a single-goal lead late on, this time they closed the game out for a crucial three points which takes them up to 5th in the Premier Division table.

SATURDAY 26th NOVEMBER
Weekend Stats: 23 games played of which 10 were home wins, 6 away wins and 7 draws Weekend Stats: The 23 games produced a total of 97 goals, an average of 4.22 per game. Dildale Linton (Rugby Borough), Jake Reynolds (Rushden & Higham United) and Rhys Thorpe (Eaton Socon) all netted hat tricks.
Division Two New Bradwell St Peter produced a giant-killing act in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy First Round with a 3-0 home success over Division One Ampthill Town, their reward is an away tie with Premier Division Leighton Town in December.
Four Gladwish Challenge Trophy Second Round ties were played on Saturday with some surprising results, in the two Division One v Premier Division ties it was the underdogs who came out on top in both, Eaton Socon thumped visiting Hoddesdon Town 5-0 while Northampton Sileby Rangers enjoyed a 4-2 home success against Risborough Rangers. Division Two side Bovingdon came close to causing an upset as they led visiting Premier Division Biggleswade United 2-1 with five minutes to go before the visitors scored three in the final minutes. The day’s other tie saw an all Division One clash with hosts Rugby Borough defeating Letchworth Garden City Eagles 5-1.
Leighton Town climbed to the top of the Premier Division with a 2-0 home win over Tring Athletic replacing morning leaders Crawley Green who suffered a 1-4 home defeat at the hands of Leverstock Green, the hosts having their goalkeeper red carded after five minutes and having to field an outfield player between the sticks for the remainder of the game, the visitors climbing to seventh place as a result. Elsewhere Ardley United enjoyed a 3-2 success at Arlesey Town while Aylesbury Vale Dynamos overcame visiting Cockfosters 3-1. In the days other Premier Division action Dunstable Town and Potton United shared the spoils following a 2-2 draw at Creasey Park (more on this later in the ramblings).
Division One leaders Real Bedford FC maintained their excellent season with a 4-0 home success against struggling London Tigers while relegation threatened Wellingborough Whitworth suffered a 1-4 reverse at Winslow United. In the days other league action Amersham Town lost ground on the leaders after being beaten 23 at home by Buckingham Athletic, the visitors having led 3-0 at the break.
Three of the four SSML sides advanced into the next round of the Northants Les Underwood Junior Cup on Saturday, Raunds Town being the only losers when going out in a penalty shoot-out at former SSML side Irchester United following a 1-1 draw. Moulton FC also required the lottery of spot kicks before seeing off FC Peterborough after a thrilling 3-3 draw. Elsewhere Northampton ON Chenecks overcame Wellingborough Whitworth Reserves,
the SSML visitors winning 2-0 while in the other tie Rushden & Higham United eased past visiting Daventry Town Reserves 6-0.
The three Division Two fixtures all resulted in draws on Saturday, Tring Corinthians AFC held visiting Pitstone & Ivinghoe 0-0, Buckingham United and Potton United Development shared four goals while it was the same scoreline as AFC Caddington hosted Milton Keynes College Football Academy, the hosts coming back from 0-2 down.
It was double joy for the two SSML clubs in the Anagram Records Trophy Third Round, Old Bradwell United advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 home success against Clapton Community while Codicote needed a penalty shoot-out to see off visiting Sungate after drawing 3-3.
Eynesbury United moved into the next round of the Huntingdonshire Intermediate Cup with a 3-0 away success against Stilton United Reserves.
SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Dunstable Town and pens the following report:- Mid table Dunstable Town hosted 6th placed Potton United at Creasey Park in front of over 200 spectators on a bright November afternoon. It was a very interesting and entertaining game although with some bad-tempered moments. Indeed, there was a constant feeling that the game could boil over at any minute. Fortunately, this did not happen but if the players had shown the same attitude to their game that they showed to moaning at the match officials, then this could have been a great watch. Dunstable began well and Potton had difficulty in keeping them at bay. An early Town chance, was missed by Craig Foxall in the Potton goal, but it was cleared off the goal line by a defender. Other chances were either blocked or missed the goal completely. The opening goal came from a Town corner kick which saw Albie Osborne head the ball into the Potton net off the underside of the crossbar on 29 minutes. Little was seen of the Potton attack in the first half although they forced a great save from Connor Coulson in the home goal. They also saw a header from a corner kick cleared off the home goal line. However, Dunstable were good value for their half time lead. The second half saw more of the same although Town were fortunate to see a poor back pass not converted by Potton as keeper Coulson just about cleared the ball. Town scored their second goal on 70 minutes when a long ball found striker Danny Webb clear who lobbed the ball over Foxall and into the empty net. It looked game over for Potton when captain Jesse Armoo was sin binned for one comment too many to referee Tingey. But Town did not make the extra man tell and Armoo resumed his place on the pitch after the 10-minute spell. Still the result looked comfortable for Town until the final few minutes when Robbie Goodman saw red after illegally denying a certain Potton goal on 79 minutes. The resulting penalty was dispatched by Finbar King. This set up a pulsating final few minutes of the game and Potton rescued an unlikely point when Dave Parkinson scored the equaliser deep into stoppage time. Dunstable should have won this match but credit to Potton who never gave up and deservedly drew the game.
The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 163 votes cast is:-
Leverstock Green 50.9%
New Bradwell St Peter 25.2%
Eaton Socon 16.0%
Northampton Sileby Rangers 7.9%

Midweek Stats: 4 games played of which 3 were away wins and 1 draw.
Midweek Stats: The 4 games produced a total of 10 goals, an average of 2.50 per game.
The local derby between Dunstable Town and AFC Dunstable in the Beds Senior Cup saw visiting Step 4 AFC advance thanks to an odd goal in three successes at Creasey Park.
St Panteleimon progressed in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup with a 2-0 success at Step 4 Uxbridge thanks to two second half strikes.
A 90th minute penalty denied Ardley United a win at Step 4 Thame United in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup, the spot kick sent the game into extra time but with no further goals it was down to the lottery of penalties in which the hosts advanced into the quarterfinals.
Moulton FC ended their six-match league run of six games without a win with an excellent 3-0 away success at second placed Rugby Borough in front of a crowd of 205.
The Non-League Show on Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds & Bucks) has returned with a new day and time. It will air live between 12-2pm every Saturday. The show presented by Ollie Bayliss will reflect on the previous week’s big news and stories as well as promoting and reviewing matches later that afternoon. For those who missed it then you can catch up here:https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0db7tgb
November was another really busy month with kit either leaving or arriving at the containers most days. Here are the monthly totals
Total items sent in November - 13,850
Total items sent so far in 2022 - 106,130
Total items sent since 1998 - 927,082
Countries supported - Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ukraine, Colombia, DR Congo, Tanzania, The Philippines, Libya.
Even though I say it myself, I do think this is quite impressive for a volunteer-run charity, with a minimal budget and little recognition, to reach so many different countries. We are also edging ever closer to the milestone figure of 1 Million items of donated kit. My guess is that we will reach this by next July.
Hopefully you will have seen the email I sent out last week with the link to order your copy. It is a really nice calendar with pictures representing our work across th e globe. If you are still to order or have lost the email, here is the link to Ask Calendars site https://www.askonline.shop/collections/kitaid
Please support this fundraiser if you can as we do need to sell as many calendars as we can to help meet our running costs.
I have attended a couple of meetings with England Netball in November to discuss running a netball kit collection across Hertfordshire. This has now been agreed and plans are in place for one collection to be held at the National Schools Netball Tournament on 28 January, where schools from across the whole of the UK will compete at Stanborough School in Welwyn Garden City.
A second collection will be held with all Hertfordshire based Netball Clubs in early February. This is a great opportunity and hopefully a lot of kit will be collected to support the new Netball League in Mulanje, Malawi.
Interestingly we also received a great donation of kit from the England National Badminton centre, and it is lovely kit which can also be used for netball.
Due to a 92nd minute equaliser by Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, against Leverstock Green FC, the inaugural KitAid Supporters Cup could not be presented to either team. It finished 3-3. I don't think I have ever been so frustrated by an injury time goal! However, a few of the KitAid team had an enjoyable afternoon at the game and as we also sponsored the game, we had the pleasure of joining the club officials in the boardroom at half time as well as choosing the Man of the Match. We will look to carry the trophy over to the return match in January.
At the boxing up session in October we handed over some Everton FC kit to a volunteer who was about to go out to Ghana to work at a school. He sent photos back of the kit being used and Richie, the Regional Co-ordinator, submitted a story to the Everton press office. They then released the story across their official social media sites and this really showed the power of a good photo and story. There were thousands of views, and the story was also covered by the Liverpool Echo and the FC Business magazine.
This is why photos are so important for KitAid as well as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
This podcast is run by Watford FC supporters, and it is becoming one of the main voices for Hornet fans.
I was given 30 minutes to tell the KitAid story a few months ago and since then, the guys who run the site have been very supportive of our work. Last week they announced they are moving on to a bigger platform, which hosts some of the really big sites and is linked to Talk Sport. They will also be releasing merchandise and half of the proceeds will be donated to KitAid.
We are looking for another courier company as back up, as the companies we currently use are struggling with driver shortages. If you know of a reliable and good value company who cover the UK for collections and deliveries, could you please let me know.
We have started work on planning for the big 25th Anniversary/1 Million donated items event for 2023.
We are still waiting to hear if Affinity Water can help with sponsorship, and this is critical in terms of the type of event we hold. Depending on sponsorship, it will either be a hotel-based buffet event, similar to the 20th Anniversary, or a garden party/club house event. As it is such a significant milestone, we would prefer to make it a hotel type event.
If you have any suggestions on sponsorship, venue, entertainment, auction items we would love to hear from you.
We have ordered some polo shirts with the new special logo, and these will be available for £15, including p&p.
There will also be special badges, available for £5. More information will follow with photos in the next monthly update, but if you would like to place an order in advance, please reply stating the required size.
Well, I think that is everything for November and I hope you find this update interesting and of use.
Many thanks for your support, which is what makes KitAid exist.
Very best wishes
Derrick

Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Colin Bull, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Roger Stokes
As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements. Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place.
Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons.
At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs.
This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted.
The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria
12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
