ST MARYS CHALLENGE CUP 2023/2024 Welcome to the 2023/2024 St Marys Challenge Cup, one of the World's oldest Competitions, organised by the West Herts FA, since 1888. It has always been the "Local FA Cup" for Senior Non-Professional teams in the West Herts Region!

Two season's ago, the West Herts FA folded their League programme but continued the St Marys Cup Competition. Last season, we invited 8 teams that are the top teams connected to the West Herts FA, in the FA Non-League Pyramid System, Step 5 to 7 and had a great Competition. With 351 watching the Final at Hemel Hempstead Town, Leverstock Green just overcame Tring Athletic, 1-0. With 8 Teams invited, there are 2 Rounds to the Final.

Deadline Dates Quarter Finals by February 15th 2024 and Semi Finals by April 11th 2024.

Alan Lee Reporting Arlesey Town 1 Leverstock Green 2 Leverstock Green followed up their big midweek win with another three points as they overturned a half time deficit to win 2-1 at Arlesey Town on Saturday. It was their 14th league win of the season, but the first they have come from behind to win.

It was a difficult first half for the Leverstock team, firstly due to the heavy pitch, but also due to them playing directly into the sun behind the opposition goal. After a bright start for Leverstock with a couple of early half chances, it was Arlesey who looked the more dangerous side with a more direct style that suited the conditions well.

In the 7th minute a cross from Rory Busby set up a good chance for Dwade James, but he put the ball over the bar from close range. In the 13th minute Montel Brown had a go from a free kick but it was turned round the post by Josh Bowler. Ten minutes later Brown had a run into the box, beating two challenges on the way but his shot from a narrow angle was kept out by Bowler.

Brown tried again from a free kick on 28 minutes, but Bowler gathered the ball comfortably. Arlesey finally took what was a deserved lead in the 35th minute on the break. A slip from a Leverstock player in midfield left James with a clear run at goal, and he went on to slot the ball past Bowler.

It was a second blow for the Leverstock side, with top scorer Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica having to leave the game just before the goal, being replaced by Lewis Collins. Leverstock had a bright spell at the end of the half, winning a couple of corners, but the home side still held their lead at the break.

It was a much-improved display from the Leverstock side in the second half, as they adapted better to the conditions and dominated the game. In the 49th minute a cross from Collins just went over the head of Luke Beckwith in front of goal. Six minutes later a pass from Beckwith put Rawn Seale in on goal, and Seale took the ball past keeper Ollie Skinner, but his shot was cleared off the line by a defender.

In the 63rd minute Leverstock won a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but Collins’ effort went over the bar, and three minutes later Collins slid in to meet a cross but just failed to connect.

In the 71st minute Leverstock were aggrieved when they were on the attack after the referee initially played an advantage after a foul, but then pulled play back for the free kick. However, the free kick worked to their advantage. It looked as though Dan Pett was set to float the ball into the box, but instead it was a clever routine as Ryan Carruthers laid the ball off to Pett, who took off on a run towards the box before hitting a low shot that bounced in front of Skinner and went into the net for the equaliser.

Leverstock were well on top now and five minutes later they struck again. Pett and Beckwith combined on an attack which saw both trying to get shots away before Pett eventually hit a shot which Skinner could only parry away. Beckwith followed in for the rebound and slipped it past Skinner from a narrow angle to put Leverstock into a 2-1 lead.

A display of grit and determination had seen Leverstock turn the game around, and they continued to show that over the remaining minutes to close out a win which lifts them up to third in the SSML Premier Division table.

https://kitaid.net A few words about KitAid KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd).

After two weeks in Tanzania, a flame was lit in Derrick’s heart, and he was on a mission to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed children playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags. Twenty-one years on, KitAid has lots of volunteers and to date we’ve sent out 900,000+ kits to children and adults in 55 different countries across the world.

Bovingdon History

Bovingdon Football Club was formed in 1910 and originally played our matches at Blacksmiths Hill along the Chipperfield Road. There were no on-site facilities, and the players had to change in the Village Hall and walk to the ground. In 1953 the club moved to our current home ground in Green Lane, using a converted post-war Nissen hut as a changing room. The new clubhouse was opened in 1973 and the facilities are amongst the best in the area, sporting a clubhouse and bar, four changing rooms and separate shower blocks. The ground also provides two full size pitches, two junior pitches, and a floodlit training area.

The early years were spent playing in the West Herts League, before progressing to the Herts Senior County League in the late 1950’s. We enjoyed most of our success during the years between 1950 and 1957 when we picked up no less than 22 trophies. Our most notable achievement was being crowned Champions seven years running.

Bovingdon FC has won all of the local cup competitions; the Apsley Senior twice, Watford Peace six times, Webster Cup four times, plus the Chiltern Villages and the Herts Junior. We have also won the St Mary’s four times - in 1950, 1954, 1955, and 1957. Other Cup success came when we won the Rickmansworth Charity Cup in 2005 and our Reserve Team won the Cecil Hudson Cup in 2015. More recent success has come in the form of Herts Senior County champions (17/18) and Spartan South Mid Div 2 Champions (18/19) We currently run three senior teams, with the First Team and Reserves Team both playing in the Herts County League and the ‘A’ Team in the West Herts League. Our thriving junior section fields teams from the under-7s through to the under-18s, who supply a stream of home-grown talent to the senior squad.

Our club exists because of the fantastic amount of time and effort our committee and volunteers put into the club. Many of whom have full time jobs, as well as other commitments and for their amazing efforts we are extremely grateful!

Step 4 and Step Flay Offs 2023/24 Season The Clubs finishing in the bottom two places in each of the eight divisions at Step 4 at the end of the Regular Season will be relegated and placed in a feeder pool and placed in the most geographically appropriate division at Step 5 for the following Playing Season.

Clubs relegated for finishing in the bottom two places in each of the eight divisions at Step 4 will be replaced by the Clubs finishing in 1st position in each of the sixteen divisions at Step 5 together with a further 16 Clubs (one Club from each of the sixteen divisions at Step 5) determined by a series of Play Off Matches.

Where a Club finishes in 1st position but does not meet the minimum criteria for promotion to the next Step (which shall include being awarded a Grade 5 following an independent ground grading inspection), the Club finishing in 2nd position shall be promoted and the Club finishing in 3rd position (and so on) shall be the Club in the next eligible position to take part in the Play Off Matches. Where a Club finishes in a Play Off Position but does not meet the Criteria for participation in Play Off Matches, the Club finishing in the next eligible position shall take part in the Play Off Matches.

In each division at Step 5, the Play Off Matches shall be played so that the highest placed of the eligible Clubs plays against the lowest placed of the eligible Clubs and the other two eligible Clubs play each other. The ties will be played on a single match basis with the home Club being the Club with the best points per match ratio in the Regular Season. If there are only three eligible Clubs, then the highest placed eligible Club shall receive a bye and play the winner of the other Play Off Match, and the winner of that match will be promoted. Clubs finishing below 7th position will not be eligible to take part in Play Off Matches.

The promoted Clubs will be placed in a feeder pool and placed in the most geographically appropriate division at Step 4 for the following Playing Season. In addition, a Club promoted to Step 4 shall comply with the Licencing System provision as set out in Appendix 1 to the Standardised Rules.

2024/25 Season Onwards

The Clubs finishing in the bottom four places in each of the eight divisions at Step 4 at the end of the Regular Season will be relegated and placed in a feeder pool and placed in the most geographically appropriate division at Step 5 for the following Playing Season.

Clubs relegated for finishing in the bottom four places in each of the eight divisions at Step 4 will be replaced by the Clubs finishing in 1st position in each of the sixteen divisions at Step 5 together with a further 16 Clubs (one Club from each of the sixteen divisions at Step 5) determined by a series of Play Off Matches.

Where a Club finishes in 1st position but does not meet the minimum criteria for promotion to the next Step (which shall include being awarded a Grade 5 following an independent ground grading inspection), the Club finishing in 2nd position shall be promoted and the Club finishing in 3rd position (and so on) shall be the Club in the next eligible position to take part in the Play Off Matches. Where a Club finishes in a Play Off Position but does not meet the Criteria for participation in Play Off Matches, the Club finishing in the next eligible position shall take part in the Play Off Matches.

In each division at Step 5, the Play Off Matches shall be played so that the highest placed of the eligible Clubs plays against the lowest placed of the eligible Clubs and the other two eligible Clubs play each other. The ties will be played on a single match basis with the home Club being the Club with the best points per match ratio in the Regular Season. If there are only three eligible Clubs, then the highest placed eligible Club shall receive a bye and play the winner of the other Play Off Match, and the winner of that match will be promoted. Clubs finishing below 7th position will not be eligible to take part in Play Off Matches.

Alan Lee Reporting Leverstock Green 6 Biggleswade United 0 Leverstock Green FC finally played their first match of 2024, and it proved to be a spectacular night as the Green side found their shooting boots to put six goals without reply past Biggleswade United.

Leverstock made a bright start to the game, with two half-chances within the opening five minutes, and they took the lead in the 8th minute. Top scorer Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica received the ball by the right touchline and went on a solo run into the box before slotting home from a narrow angle for his 18th goal of the season.

There was almost a second goal four minutes later when a free kick from Dan Pett found the head of Dan Weeks, but it was deflected wide off a defender. It wasn’t long coming, though, as Pett took the resulting corner and Callum Neal headed home from inside the six-yard box to make it 2-0.

Leverstock Green FC were well in control of the game, and chances kept on coming. On 16 minutes a pass from Luke Beckwith put Stefanoaica in again. His shot hit the bar, and the rebound dropped for Rio Beach, but he couldn’t get his effort on target. A minute later Rawn Seale was through on goal, but his shot was saved by keeper Tom Wyant. The third goal eventually arrived on 22 minutes, and it was very similar to the second as a Pett corner found Neal at the near post with a glancing header to notch his second of the night.

There could have been a fourth goal a minute later, but Wyant did well to keep out shots from Beckwith and a rebound effort from Nat Connolly. In the 30th minute a pass down the wing from Neal gave Stefanoaica another run at goal, but his eventual shot was turned wide by Wyant. In first half stoppage time Connolly was denied again as he slid in to meet a cross from Beckwith, but it was saved from close range.

Leverstock picked up where they left off in the second half. In the 48th minute Connolly pushed forward before laying off to Beckwith, who hit a ferocious shot from the edge of the box that Wyant got a hand to but couldn’t keep out to make it 4-0.

The visitors had some brighter moments during the second half, with Josh Bowler having a couple of saves to make, but the clean sheet was never seriously threatened. Leverstock started making some changes, and one of the subs Jayden Newman added his name to the scoresheet in the 74th minute, turning on the edge of the six-yard box before steering a shot past Wyant. Just a minute later it was 6-0 as a cross from Neal found Seale to flick the ball past Wyant from close range.

The three points take Leverstock Green FC back up to fourth place, and the six goals are a huge boost to their goal difference as they continue to compete for a promotion play-off place.

Development & U18’s Team News Leverstock Green Development put in a great effort against unbeaten league leaders Belstone in Saturday’s HSCL Premier Division fixture.

There were several new signings in the squad, including Evripidis Grigoriou, on loan from Barnet, and his goal had the Leverstock side leading 1-0 at half time. However, Belstone struck back in the second half and eventually won the game 2-1 with a last-minute goal.

The Development Team registered their fourth win of the season as they overcame local rivals Colney Heath Reserves at the Lords Builders Merchants Stadium on Saturday. Two goals from Callum Moore midway through the first half, the second from the penalty spot, established a 2-0 lead which was held until Colney pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time at the end of the game.

Leverstock Green Development had their second win on the trot with a good 1 – 0 win over London Lions Development. Dylan Duane-Berry was our goal scorer. This win takes us up to 14th in the league table.

The under-18s moved into the last 16 of the Brian Hitchings Cup with a 4-1 win at Crawley Green in Tuesday night’s Second Round tie. Connor McGinty opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and Jamie McIntosh added a second six minutes later.

The hosts pulled a goal back after half time, but McIntosh struck again in the 76th and 8th minutes to complete his hat-trick and a 4-1 win.

There was late heartbreak for the Under-18s, as they came very close to ending the 100% record of Tring Athletic in Thursday night’s SCFYL Corinthian Division game but were beaten by a goal deep into stoppage time.

Tring had won their opening four league games, as well as having a long run in the FA Youth Cup, and they took an early lead. However, Stan Kenyon equalised for Leverstock in the 14th minute. The score remained a 1-1 until the 4th minute of stoppage time when Tring scored a winner.

Introduction to MEYBA MEYBA was created on the beaches of Barcelona by Josep Mestre and Joaquim Ballbé. They teamed up with a dream of creating a classic swim – and sportswear line, and “ME ‘y’ BA” was born.

In 1981 MEYBA became internationally known. By signing an agreement with FC Barcelona to provide sports and leisurewear. During the 10 years that FC Barcelona wore MEYBA apparel, the team won many prizes and honours. The team, with players such as Michael Laudrup, Ronald Koeman, José Mari Bakero and the young Pep Guardiola, will forever be remembered as "the Dreamteam V1".
