Alan Lee Reporting Kidlington 1 Vs Leverstock Green 3 Leverstock Green won their first ever away game since promotion to the Southern League, and it was a crucial three points against fellow strugglers Kidlington. Since their last game, Fergus Moore has added to his squad with three players on loan from Boreham Wood’s academy side, and all three featured tonight, along with John Gyabaah, signed on a dual registration from Colney Heath. Daniel Isaac started at centre back, while Keanu Fleming and Adam Morley came off the bench, the former scoring a superb goal to seal the win. The home side had the game’s first chance, with Felix Robertson heading over the bar from close range in the 5th minute. In the 12th minute Isaac showed some neat footwork outside the opposition penalty area before putting in a low cross. Guiseppe Delgaudio slid in at the near post but his effort was wide. Four minutes later Callum Neal headed over the bar from a corner. In the 31st minute Alfie Bonfield pulled off the first of several important saves in a goalmouth scramble following a Kidlington free kick. In first half stoppage time Leverstock threatened on the break as Delgaudio carried the ball from the edge of his own penalty area to deep into opposition territory before laying off to Jamie Breen, whose shot was well saved by home keeper Henry Woodcock. A tight game was goalless at the break, but five minutes into the second half Leverstock made a breakthrough. Breen went on a solo run from the halfway line before slotting a shot past Woodcock from the edge of the penalty area for a 1-0 lead. The lead could have been doubled ten minutes later when a great pass from Breen put Nat Connolly through on goal, but Woodcock came off his line to save well. Another good chance was missed in the 64th minute when Breen had a clear shooting chance, but took an extra touch and had his effort blocked. It looked as though those misses might prove costly when Kidlington won a penalty in the 66th minute, a challenge from skipper Dan Pett bringing down Powfil Raposo, who had made a dangerous s run into the box. Raposo sent Bonfield the wrong way from the spot to level the scores at 1-1. Bonfield made another good save in the 70th minute to keep the scores level, before

Leverstock started using their substitutes. Isaiah Hilaire replaced Breen in the 70th minute, Fleming came on for Luke Beckwith in the 80th minute and Gyabaah replaced Ademide Baruwa in the 85th minute. Seconds after that last change Leverstock were back in front as Rio Beach capped off a spell of pressure around the Kidlington goal with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area past Woodcock for a 2-1 lead. It got even better for Leverstock three minutes later as Fleming showed his quality with a mazy run into the box before cracking home a fierce shot off the underside of the bar to make it 3-1. That proved to be enough for Leverstock to take the win, which moves them above Kidlington on goal difference and will be a great confidence booster for the forthcoming games against high-flying Flackwell Heath and Thame United. The Elms – A 44-bed hostel providing emergency and short-term accommodation to single, homeless adults. Crash Pad – Emergency overnight accommodation offered to people when we are unable to accommodate them immediately at The Elms. Move On – Providing support for The Elms residents into more independent living in shared accommodation. Resettlement – Supporting clients moving from The Elms or Move On into council, social housing, or private rental. Foodbank – Providing emergency food parcels and household provisions to local individuals and families. In the Community – Supporting people in the community during this cost-of-living crisis and helping reduce the need to visit our Foodbank. Social Enterprises – Developing employability skills and self-confidence in a supportive environment, while also raising income.

Alan Lee Reporting Leverstock Green 1 VS Flackwell Heath 1 Leverstock Green were once again close to registering a crucial win in the Southern League Division One Central, but a late equaliser from Flackwell Heath meant they had to settle for their seventh draw of the season. The starting lineup showed only two changes from Wednesday night’s win at Kidlington, one of them being a first start for Oliwier Fusiek, recently signed from Haringey Borough. The first half saw few chances for either side. In the 9th minute a Flackwell Heath free kick went across the face of goal and just eluded two players who were sliding in to finish. Alfie Bonfield made the first of several crucial saves in the 29th minute, keeping out a shot from James Ayres. The closest that Leverstock came in the first half was from a misdirected defensive header that had to be turned over his bar by visiting keeper Carl Dennison. Three minutes into the second half it was Leverstock that took the lead, from a free kick awarded near the corner flag. Ryan Carruthers aimed directly at goal and it went straight in at the near post as Dennison could only help it into his own net. Flackwell should have equalised four minutes later when a shot from Matthew Ayres deflected into the path of James Ayres, who had the goal at his mercy but slipped his shot across goal and wide. Leverstock were still holding onto their lead as the game went into the final ten minutes, but Flackwell were now pushing strongly. Bonfield made a good save from Lewis Patrick in the 83rd minute, however three minutes later a ball into the box found Callum

Mapley, who hit a first time low shot that beat Bonfield and levelled the scores. From there, Leverstock did well to hold out for the point under furious pressure from the visitors. Alan Lee Reporting Thame United 4 Vs Leverstock Green 0 Leverstock Green’s three-game unbeaten run ended with a 4-0 defeat away to Thame United on Tuesday night. The damage was mostly done during a ten minute spell towards the end of the first half when three goals were scored. Alfie Bonfield had to make a save within the opening 20 seconds of the game as Brayden Daniel burst through straight from the kick-off, and made another save in the 18th minute to turn a shot from Jefferson Louis round the post. Leverstock were holding their own in the game until the 32nd minute when the ball was given away in their own half. Dan West picked up the ball and played a one-two with Daniel before firing home a low shot from the edge of the box for the opening goal. There was almost an instant response from Leverstock. Jamie Breen got free down the left and crossed for Guiseppe Delgaudio. Thame keeper Matt Crowther got a hand to Delgaudio’s shot, but it would still have gone in but for a goalline clearance from a defender. Instead of being level, Leverstock found themselves two goals down in the 36th minute as the ball was given away again and the mistake was swiftly punished as Daniel ran straight through the Green defence to slot home the second goal. Three minutes later West headed home at the far post from a corner to put the home side three goals up. Leverstock needed an early goal in the second half to have a chance, but instead it was Thame who got the early goal as a ball over the top put Daniel clean through and onside to slot home the fourth goal in the 47th minute. That ended the game as a contest, and the second half was largely a non-event as Thame made a triple substitution in the 63rd minute, withdrawing all their forwards. Leverstock brought on all their young substitutes during the second half, and it was an improved performance, but there were no further serious chances for either side. Alan Lee Reporting Allenbury Reserves 5 Vs Leverstock Green Reserves 1 It was a bad day at the office for league leaders Leverstock Green Reserves as they were beaten 5-1 at Allenburys Sports in Saturday’s Herts Senior County League Premier Division game. After playing well during the first half they conceded a goal late on to trail 1-0 at the break. A poor start to the second half saw them concede further goals in the 47th, 49th and 55th minutes, and a red card for Jose Costa in the 58th minute reduced them to ten men. Alex Vtornicov netted for the fourth game in a row to pull a goal back, but another goal for Allenburys late in the game made it 5-1. Barton Rovers Club History Our home is in Barton-le-Clay, a village of some 5000 people just north of Luton. Formed in 1898, we played inter-village football for the first 50 years until 1946 when we reformed and joined the Luton & District League. Progress was such that in 1954 we were accepted into the South Midlands League. We enjoyed only limited success until 1964 when former Leicester City and Luton Town defender Barry Reed joined our club as manager. After winning promotion to the Premier Division in 1964/65 the club was never out of the top three until leaving the league in 1979, winning the title eight seasons out of nine and making a clean sweep in their final season the Premier Division title, the Senior Section Challenge Trophy, the Reserve Division title and the Reserve Section Challenge Trophy the only time this has been achieved to date. In 1976 we entered the FA Vase for the first time and went to the quarterfinals before losing to Farnborough Town. The following year it was one step better with a semi-final appearance against Sheffield. 1978 saw the pinnacle reached with a crowd of 16,391 watching the Final at Wembley where we unfortunately lost 2-1 to Blue Star of Newcastle. In 1979 we gained election to the then Isthmian league. In our first season, we finished in a credible 8th position. In 1980/81 this was improved to fourth and the same position was repeated in 1981/82, when the club also enjoyed another good Vase run reaching the Rainworth MW 1-2 on aggregate. At the end of the 1982/83 season, Barry Reed retired having achieved the club's highest position of 3rd. He had also fulfilled his greatest wish to see Barton Rovers play in the first-round proper of the FA Cup, which was achieved in 1980 when we lost 2-0 to Torquay United at Plainmoor. As a club, we had to settle for mid-table obscurity as three managers guided the Rovers through a transitional period in the mid-'80s. In season 1990/91, Rovers qualified for the new Division Two, for Manager Mick Huckle, his final game in charge after five years, as he retired to become General Manager. After an unspectacular 1991/192 season with firstly Ray Brandon and then Tony Dumigan in charge a new man was appointed in May 1992 - Brian Williams who had been one of the most successful non-league managers in the area. Unfortunately, his success was limited to cup competitions with the Rovers having their best FA Vase run for seven years, eventually failing to, Wembley finalists Tiverton Town from the Great Mills Western League in the 4th Round. The semi-final of the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also reached but the most notable success came in the Isthmian Associate Members Trophy where the Rovers reached the final of an Isthmian League competition for the first time in our history. Despite a 3-1 extra-time defeat against Northwood, it was an achievement that lit up the reins, retaining Gordon Brown as his coach. Together these two steered the Rovers clear of the relegation threat that had hung over the club all season, securing their Division Two status in the penultimate league match with a 2 -2 draw at Withal Town. May 1993 saw the appointment of Gordon Taylor. His first season at Sharpenhoe Road saw him guide the Rovers to 4th spot, the club's highest position since 1983, behind runaway leaders and big spenders Newbury Town, Chertsey Town and Aldershot Town. This platform was built upon in season 1994-95, and Gordon Taylor successfully steered the Rovers into the Runners up position behind Champions Thame United. But to leave it there would hide the real success story of the season. It was realised at Christmas that the Club's financial position was precarious, to say the least, and drastic action was needed, initially to cut costs. With the team riding high in the table, and the very realistic chance of promotion, if not the Championship, lying ahead the decision to cut the playing budget to nil was not an easy one, but a necessary evil to ensure the Club's survival. This body blow has destroyed many a club before but the loyalty shown by the manager Gordon Taylor, and the bulk of the playing squad, cannot be disputed. Their response had to be seen to be believed. Playing the best football of the season they subsequently swept to nine straight victories, eight in the league that put Barton back on top of the table, scoring 30 goals and conceding just 4. Only one victory in March allowed the chasing pack to make up ground, but a return to form in April culminated in promotion being gained in the penultimate match. No praise can be too high for the achievement of the management and players, who after all the adversity, took Barton Rovers into the First Division of the Isthmian League for the first time ever, after 16 seasons of membership of the League.

The elevation also saw the Rovers join the top 176 non-league clubs in the country in the FA Trophy. With subsequent cuts being made to the clubs running costs, and an increase in revenue from sponsorship, the club was once again heading in the right direction. Barton's first season in Division One was not an easy one as the club struggled to find its feet in the higher division, but lessons were learnt from the early setbacks, and by December the tide was turned and the Rovers hoisted themselves clear of the danger zone. Barton also reached the finals of both county cups, where we met Bedford Town twice. Bedford took the honours in the Senior Cup, winning 1-0. Barton then won the Premier Cup 1-0 on aggregate. Tony McNally scored the only goal 11 minutes from the end of the second leg at Sharpenhoe Road. Season 1996/97 saw Barton top the Division One table twice in September. However, a run of seven matches without a win meant Manager Gordon Taylor resigned in October 1996 after three and a quarter years in charge, despite the club still being in a healthy position in the top half of the table. Former Manager Mick Huckle took over the reins with former Coach Ben Harrison temporarily while interviews took place. As a result of this, the Club selected Gordon Brown as their new Manager. The transitional period that followed saw a run of 13 games without a win until a vital 2-1 success at fellow strugglers Canvey Island in February 1997. With the "duck “broken and a settled side now back in place, results improved and the Rovers pulled themselves away from the danger zone. On the penultimate Saturday of the season with a 3 - 1 home win over doomed Tooting & Mitcham United, and a win at Molesey on the last day to be sure. As in the previous season, Barton lifted some silverware. This time it was in the form of the Anglia TV 5-a-side Championship. Manager Gordon Brown hoped his second season would see his team improve within their newfound level. This was achieved in season 1997 98 with a new record finish of 16th. The Rovers also had their best run in the FA Cup for 17 years, reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round with wins over Hassocks, Clapton and Windsor & Eton before Braintree Town ended the growing dreams of another 1st Round Proper appearance. We also reached the final of the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the 11th time, and Manager Gordon Brown departed to coach in the US for a year with the cup secured thanks to a 4- 0 victory over Potton United. The Club appointed Gordon's successor in April 1998, on his recommendation, in former Arsenal and Luton Town player lan Allinson, who was manager at United Counties League club Stotfold. Another record season was recorded, with 15th a new positional high. To cap a memorable season Barton reached three cup finals. The Bedfordshire Senior Cup was retained with a 3 - 0 win over Bedford Town, in a final played at Bedford Town FC and the South Midlands Floodlight Cup was won for the first time, with a 1 - 0 win over Hemel Hempstead Town, again on the opponent’s ground. Barton missed out on a cup treble, losing the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final, which they had reached in their first season, by 2 - 1 to Spalding United. 1999-2000 saw an excellent start by the club with Rovers in third spot on Christmas day. However, two defeats over the festive period by local rivals Bedford Town and bottom club Chertsey Town brought Ian Allinson’s shock resignation to join Harlow Town. Ian Donnelly was promoted from assistant to take over the reins, and the club consolidated to record its highest-ever league finish with a final place of 12th. In addition to this Barton Rovers reached the semi-final of the League Cup losing over two legs to Farnborough Town. With the club suffering a poor start to the next season Ian Donnelly was replaced by Noel Blackwell, who had been assistant Manager at Stevenage Borough. Noel was also a former Barton Player from the 1980s but his reign was brief lasting just 17 days in September. Barton's third manager in as many months was Alan Biley, the former Everton, Derby County and Cambridge player. Alan was appointed in October 2000 but resigned to take over Diss Town 4 months later. Dick Newman took over, steadied the ship, but had the job of rebuilding the Rovers following their relegation back to Division Two With no relegation taking place due to the forthcoming league restructuring, the club took the opportunity to bring forward some of the younger players from its youth academy to give them invaluable first-team experience. Although the average age of the side was probably the youngest in the division, the team managed to finish in 14th place in the table. This young team also reached the final of the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and won the Hinchingbrooke Cup for the first time with a 2-0 victory over Yaxley. Immediately after this final match of the

season, Dick Newman informed the club of his decision to resign to take up a post with Potton United. However, this shocking news was tempered by the fact that former manager, Ian Allinson, had left Harlow and agreed to return to Sharpenhoe Road for a second spell in charge, continuing the progress of the young players which had begun the previous season. Season 2002/03 saw another period of consolidation with several young players making the grade. Notably, striker Drew Roberts, who came through from the youth side set the league “alight” with some great goals before moving on to Bedford Town. Ian continued to mould a side on a tight budget with yet more youth players to come through, hopes were high for this season. In January Ian decided to try his luck elsewhere and so he left to join Borehamwood on good terms after 18 months with us in his second spell. The club moved fast in finding a replacement and by the following Saturday it had appointed former players Gordon Guile and Graham Golds from Harpenden Town as joint player/managers. The club started the new season in the Southern League following the restructure, full of confidence as the rebuilding continued. Unfortunately, in early October Gordon found that work commitments meant that he could no longer give his full commitment to the club as manager, and he stepped down. The club moved quickly again and moved coach and former manager Gordon Taylor up into the management “hot seat”. They also appointed long-term player and club captain Tony Mcnally as player-coach, and they continued to keep the club together and moving in the right direction. After a season that saw the team consolidate its position in the league, and the departure of top goal scorer Paul Barnes to A.F.C. Wimbledon for a club record fee the season ended with a second Hinchingbrooke Cup win and the final retirement of stalwart Tony Mcnally. The club then regretfully accepted the resignation of manager Gordon Taylor. With a view to the future, the club have appointed youth team manager Kevin Thoburn as General manager and the vastly experienced Neil Rodney as coach and the job of rebuilding the team goes on with the team looking very impressive in the pre-season period. The period after Kevin Thorburn’s departure has somewhat been a transition of turning old ways into new. Manager Gary Fitzgerald took charge of his first full season in charge during the 2007/08 Season, Gary was the youngest manager to ever take charge of the Rovers team. The 2007/08 season was a season looked at by many by trying to achieve stability after the previous regime. The season ended with the Rovers finishing in a comfortable position in the league, safe from any relegation battle. The following season Gary Fitzgerald was still at the helm, his passion and knowledge of the non-league game guided Barton to safety once again. For a team that has such a small population, playing football in the Southern League is somewhat of an achievement in itself, Gary Fitzgerald was building a young and vibrant squad by the end 2008/09 Season. Former Luton Town player Ross Hanley had a superb season, winning the Player of the Season award. Fitzgerald believed in youth and the performances by Hanley were second to none. The 2009/10 Season witnessed Gary Fitzgerald’s third season in charge of the club. This season was to be a struggle, however, there were many highlights along the way. In the league, the club battled with relegation throughout the season and had to await news on a reprieve which gladly came in the summer of 2010. Barton Rovers played some fantastic football throughout the season and the lads battled till the end. Even in such a tough season, there were some outstanding individuals, Centre-back Paul Andrews developed into a no-nonsense defender and Tommy Hull a combative midfielder had a fine regime. The club enjoyed a great run in The FA Trophy, beating Ryman Premier side Horsham on the way and taking fellow Ryman Premier side to a replay. The start of the 2010/11 season saw Barton Rovers in the Southern Football League, this time in the newly created Central Division. Gary Fitzgerald departed the club after four seasons in charge due to an unconvincing start to the season and was replaced with Dan Kennoy. Dan was recruited from neighbours Arlesey Town where he held a coaching position with their first team. At 30 years of age the former Rovers player managed to assemble a vibrant squad that ended the season in a solid 12th position in the Southern League Central division. One of the plum results in his first season was the 2-1 away win at promoted Hitchin Town. The 2010/11 season also saw the introduction of a Reserve Team, some 15 years after Barton Rovers Reserves kicked their last ball. Darren Whiley was charged with the responsibility of filtering players through to the 1st team and competing in the Suburban Football League. A solid 13th-placed finish in the first season justified the decision to reintroduce a reserve team to

the senior setup. Richard Wilmot was awarded the Players Player of the Year award; Sam Spencer was awarded Player of the Year and Andre Maltay picked up the Supporters Player of the Year. The 2011/12 season saw Dan Kennoy retain a majority of the squad so the season started with an air of optimism. It's fair to say that it didn't quite go as planned. Just four points from the opening nine games and an FA Cup defeat to lowly Hatfield Town and the young manager was started to fill the pressure. Then just one defeat in the next nine league games saw the confidence rise as well as the Rovers league position. Some convincing results continued notably the 5-1 away win at Chertsey Town and a 4-0 home win against Chalfont St Peter and the play-off places were starting to look achievable. The final quarter of the season unfortunately ended the same as the season started and with only 13 points from the last 30 available the season ended with a league position of 11th place which meant a top-half-of-the-table finish, something that hasn't happened since 2005. Ricky Case and Tommy Hull cleaned up with the first-team awards, Ricky taking the Players Player award and Top Goalscorer with 14 goals. Tommy took home the Player of the Year and the Supporters Player of the Year. Niran Vaughan was awarded the Young Player of the Year trophy. The Reserves finished the season in a remarkable 3rd place. Danny Charles was awarded the Reserve Team Players Player of the Year and Kevin Ashby received the Reserve Team Player of the Year. Kennoy stayed on for another crack at the helm in 2012/13 guiding the side to a respectable mid-table finish. Some success in both the FA Cup and Trophy with the season ending with silverware in the shape of the North Beds Charity Cup. Arguably Rovers under the stewardship of Kennoy had its best season for many years in 2013/14. Flirting with the play-off places all season before finishing 6th with a last-day-of-the-season defeat which saw the side miss out on the playoffs by just 3 points. The club's highest league position in its history was coupled with back-to-back North Beds Charity Cup successes. Following Dan Kennoy’s decision to stand down at the end of the season 2014/15 saw new managers at the helm in the shape of former players Richard Wilmot and Wes Byrne. The season bettered the previous with Wilmot and Byrne achieving a club best of playoff finalist beaten by Bedworth Utd 2-0 but then going on to lift the Beds Senior cup with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Biggleswade Town at Kenilworth Rd. The 2015-16 season saw yet another new management team of Matt Endersby and Jon Reed taking the reigns to push the small village outfit to bigger things. Sadly the season was a right off with neither manager staying to the end of the campaign but the club did manage to retain the Beds FA senior cup with a 2-1 win over AFC Dunstable. Former player Jimmy Gray took over in the Sharpenhoe Rd hot season for the promotion chase in 2016/17. Jimmy was assisted by Mark Boyce whilst Keith West stayed on as coach. Again, it's as close as it can be but no cigar as Rovers lose in the playoff final in an enthralling match v Farnborough. The two nil loss did not reflect the game but goals are all that matter. Barton regrouped for 2017-18, Mark Boyce moved up to the hot seat for the early part of the season but after a poor run of results was replaced after 16 games by ex-Dunstable Town manager and former Barton player Tony Fontanelle. After a difficult start to the 2022/23 season, Tony Fontanelle and his team were relieved of their duties and shortly replaced by joint management force Leon Cashman and Jermaine Hall who managed to keep the club afloat after an inter-step playoff victor

Alan Lee Reporting Hertford Heath 1VS Leverstock Green Reserves 1 A controversial penalty deep into stoppage time allowed Leverstock Green Reserves to claim a deserved point from Saturday’s trip to Hertford Heath. The pitch at St Margaretsbury surivived the wet weather enough to play the game, but conditions were very difficult through. The Green side was without both Freddie Newing and Jose Costa due to suspensions. There was a new partnership at the centre of defence with recent signings Antonio Edubatey and Oliwier Fusiek both starting, and first team regular Ryan Carruthers got some more game time after a recent injury. The home side took an early lead as a defensive slip allowed the #19 a shooting chance, which he took with aplomb as a stunning strike from the edge of the box gave Harry Maloret no chance in the 5th minute. Maloret made two great saves within a matter of seconds in the 12th minute as Hertford Heath, with the wind behind them, continued to have the better of things. Maloret saved again with his legs in the 35th minute as the home side threatened on the break. Two changes as the break saw Michael Adriano replace Joe Dalli and another new signing Daniel Kone made his debut, replacing Kaashan Darr, with Rodger Siluba dropping back into defence. Leverstock came close to an equaliser in the 68th minute, hitting the post in a goalmouth scramble. As Leverstock pushed forward for the equaliser, they left themselves vulnerable to a counter-attack, and in the 88th minute the Hertford Heath #2 was clean through on goal, but Maloret made another crucial save to keep his side in the game. In the first minute of stoppage time Leverstock had the ball in the net from another goalmouth scramble, but it was flagged offside and it

looked like their chance had gone. However, two minutes later in another goalmouth scramble, the linesman flagged for a handball. It was a controversial decision as it looked like it may have been a Leverstock player who handled, but after consulting his assistant, the referee awarded a penalty. Carruthers took the spot kick, which wasn’t the best and was saved by the keeper, however Adriano was quickest to the rebound and put it away to earn a crucial point as Leverstock remained on top of the Herts Senior County League Premier Division. By Jon Couch CHRISTMAS time is for giving as they say, well the fixtures computer has certainly served up a festive treat for Non-League fans everywhere this yuletide. Traditionally, the Boxing Day fixtures are one of the first fans look out for when the schedule is announced – and this year hasn’t disappointed with a number of crunch derby clashes taking place up and down the country. Whatever the level, you just can’t beat a derby-day cracker to complete your Christmas, so here are just a few that have caught the eye of our NLP groundhoppers. The National League always seems to serve up a Boxing Day feast with all the trimmings – and the Aldershot Town v Woking derby is usually at the forefront. Just 12 miles separate these rival clubs, just across the Surrey/Hampshire border, ensuring there’s never any shortage of drama for the big crowds on show. There’s a Tyne-Tees affair when Gateshead and Hartlepool United meet at the International Stadium, while Dagenham v Braintree and Southend United v Ebbsfleet United ensure that Essex and Kent are well represented on the day,

At Step 2, Brackley Town and Leamington looks tasty in National League North, similarly the Derbyshire dual between Buxton and Alfreton Town and an ‘Old Farm’ East Anglian derby with King’s Lynn Town hosting Needham Market. A big day in the north-east is further demonstrated by Darlington v Scarborough Athletic and Spennymoor Town v South Shields, not to mention Stockton Town v Hebburn Town in the Northern Premier League, Premier Division at Step 3. The South is equally as intriguing, An all-Hertfordshire clash between Hemel Hempstead Town and St Albans City is a worthy headline act, while Aveley versus Hornchurch and Tonbridge Angels v Maidstone United are big games in Essex and Kent respectively. Chippenham Town v Bath City is often a tasty affair also. The NPL also serves us up with Matlock Town v Ilkeston Town and Bamber Bridge v Lancaster City, while at Step 4 there are two more all-north east affairs between Bishop Auckland and Consett and Dunston v Newton Aycliffe. AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Corby Town is always an eagerlyawaited affair in their respective parts of Northamptonshire, while in an ultra-congested Midlands division, packed with local affairs, unbeaten Quorn and Shepshed Dynamo, separated by just seven miles, battle it out in Leicestershire. All eyes in Manchester will be on Wythenshawe when bitter rivals FC and Town meet at Hollyhedge Park, while Hednesford Town v Stafford Rangers looks a Boxing Day battle of heavyweights to rival Usyk and Fury. The Southern League Premier Central is always full of crunch local affairs and Boxing Day doesn’t disappoint with AFC Telford United

and Halesowen Town or Bromsgrove Sporting v Stourbridge arguably the pick. The Somerset clash between Tiverton Town and Taunton Town always whets the appetite in the west country, while Havant & Waterlooville and Gosport Borough love a battle on the south coast. And if you’re in or around the Beaconsfield area of Buckinghamshire then why not make the trip to Holloways Park where they take on close rivals Flackwell Heath in a lunchtime showdown. In the Isthmian League, the all-Essex affair between Billericay Town and Canvey Island gets the juices flowing, as does the Sussex derby between Horsham v Bognor Regis Town and the north London clash between Hendon and Potters Bar Town. Margate versus Ramsgate is undoubtedly the game of the day in Step 4 as the two Kent coast promotion rivals lock horns, while Hartley Wintney v Farnham Town, a local battle of third versus first, is also well worth a visit. At Step 5 and 6, of course, derbies are a little more commonplace but there are a few, mainly, cross-town affairs that are sure to whet the appetite of the locals. 1874 Northwich v Northwich Victoria ticks all the boxes for a Boxing Day bonanza, as does Newcastle Benfield v Newcastle Bue Star in Ebac Northern League Division One. And division two produces two more in the form of Chester-le-Street Town versus Chester-le-Street United and Sunderland West End v Sunderland RCA. The lunchtime affair in the United Counties League Premier North between Newark & Sherwood and Newark Town bares all the hallmarks of a cracker, similarly Northampton ON Chenecks v

Northampton Sileby Rangers in Premier South and the Division One fixture between Retford United and Retford. And, if you’re on your holidays on the Isle of Wight and missing your football fix, then how about East Cowes Victoria v Newport (IoW) in the Wessex League. Wherever you are in the country, you’re never far from a crunch local derby to savour. Combining the spirit of Non-League with the spirit of Christmas, it’s truly one of the highlights of the football calendar. A few words about KitAid KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd). Alan Lee Reporting Stotfold 1 VS Leverstock Green 0 Leverstock Green suffered a late defeat at Stotfold in a Boxing Day clash between two sides thereatened with relegation from Southern League Division One Central. It was a scrappy game of few chances played on a soft pitch. The Leverstock side showed a number of changes from their last game, including in goal where there was a debut for Frankie Beckles, signed on a dual registration from Bedfont Sports and Wealdstone. Leverstock made a promising start, with Jamie Breen making some threatening runs down the left, but there was little end product. Stotfold had a couple of near-misses, with Haroon Merial shooting wide from a good position on 18 minutes, and a header from Mitchell Gooch landing on the top of the bar in the 25th minute. But the game was goalless at half time, with the second half continuing in a similarly scrappy fashion. Stotfold had more of the pressure but the Leverstock side battled well to keep them from having any clear shots at Beckles’ goal. The game looked like it would fizzle out into a goalless draw until three minutes from time when the ball dropped for Stotfold substitute Alex Coppin on the edge of the box, and Coppin made a good connection with a volley that beat Beckles and went in off the post to clinch the points.
