Following the demise of the original Baldock Town FC in 2001 the new Baldock Town were formed from the Baldock Town Youth FC as an outlet for youth squads in 2003. The new Baldock Town played its first competitive match in September 2003 in the North Herts League at ‘The Shed’ on Clothall Road, Baldock. The match was against Magnum with a Rob Foster hat trick sealing a 5 1 win. The club then progressed from the North Herts League to the Herts Senior County League (HSCL). The 1st Team won Div 1 of the HSCL in their debut season in 2007/2008.
For three seasons from 2008 the team played its home matches on at the County Ground, Letchworth but they returned to Baldock to play at their old ground in Norton Road now known as the North Herts Arena.
After three near misses the 1st Team finally won the HSCL Premier Div title in 2012. Unfortunately, due to ground grading issues the team were unable to take their place in the Spartan Southern Midlands League (SSML).
In order to achieve its ambition of playing at the highest possible level the Team were forced to move to ground share with Hitchin FC. The club finished in second place the following season, but this proved to be good enough to secure that elusive promotion to the SSML. The side, managed by former player Scott Grant, also won the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the first time, and retained the Anagram Records Trophy.
The next two seasons saw a period of consolidation for the 1st Team as they finished 7th and 10th, respectively, in SSML Div 1 (Step 6 on the Non-League pyramid). After three seasons at Hitchin the club moved to share with Stotfold FC. Luke Gregson then took over in 2015, following Grant’s resignation, and assisted by Dean Gilbert the team then went on a superb run and ended up just missing out on promotion. The 3rd place finish was the highest placing in their recent history.
The 2017 18 season proved to be momentous as Baldock Town continued to progress and finished second in Div 1 and were duly promoted to the SSML Premier Division. The team continued with its run of excellent form and finished in 5th place in their first season in the SSML Premier Division. The following season Baldock managed to get to 12th position before the season was prematurely ended as Covid 19 started to take hold. Luke Gregson decided to step down at the end of that season and Adam Fisher took over as Manager, assisted by Rob Bates.
Baldock only managed 12 games in the 2020-21 season as Covid-19 pandemic eventually won and the League was abandoned. Rob Bates took over as Manager during the summer of 2021 and started the season with some great Cup performances but failed to turn that into League form and resigned. The Club battled through to the end of the season in 2022 with a very young team and managed to avoid relegation. Dave McAdam is the Manager, and the Club continues to ground share with Arlesey FC.

Leverstock Green were left frustrated again as an injury time equaliser saw their run of draws continue. Fergus Moore’s side had come from behind twice to lead against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, but again were unable to close out the win as they registered their seventh draw in the last nine games. The visitors were under new management and with a largely new squad from the previous game, and they looked a good side who were worth their point.
The early stages of the game saw little goalmouth action, with Leverstock having a few shots which were either wide of the target or comfortably gathered by keeper Archie Davis. The first serious save of the game was made by Leverstock keeper Austin Byfield in the 25th minute as he tipped over a free kick from Jacob Williamson. However, within a minute the visitors were ahead as a cross from Williams found Jake Baldwin, whose header went in off the post to open the scoring.
Byfield saved again in the 30th minute to keep out a shot from Dan Lambeth, and a minute later the game was back on level terms. Radu Mihai Stefanoaica, back after a three game suspension, threaded a pass to Chris Blunden, who slotted the ball past Davis for the Leverstock equaliser.
The scores were still level at half time, but Aylesbury took little time to re establish their lead in the second half. With little over a minute played Leverstock conceded an unnecessary corner, and Williamson’s cross was headed into the top corner by Terry Griffiths.
Once again, though, they only held onto their lead for five minutes, as Leverstock levelled with a well worked goal in the 52nd minute. Ethan Mooney exchanged passes with George Mitchell Gears on a run into the box and fired home from a narrow angle for a 2-2 scoreline.
Three minutes later Blunden tried his luck from a free kick, but the ball flew over the bar, and in the 58th minute Blunden was unlucky as he slid in at the far post to meet a deflected cross from Stefanoaica, but the ball curled just over the angle of post and bar. A shot from Stefanoaica in the 71st minute brought a good save out of Davis. Leverstock were generally having the better of things, but the visitors occasionally threatened with long balls to Lambeth which could have produced better results.
Five minutes from time Leverstock finally got their noses in front. A corner resulted in a scramble in which Elgeniy Daalberg had two shots blocked, then Dan Pett’s shot was blocked, but the ball fell to Blunden, who netted from close range to reach double figures for the season and put his side into a 3 2 lead.
As the 90 minutes ticked over it looked like Leverstock would be able to hold out for the win, but in the first minute of stoppage time they gave the ball away near their own corner flag. Fabian Garcia won the ball and crossed into the six yard box, where Baldwin shot home to level the scores at 3 3.
Leverstock pushed forward in search of another goal and had the ball inside the Aylesbury box in the last minute of stoppage time, but despite twisting and turning Scott McGleish could not get a shot away and the danger was cleared.

Leverstock Green’s run of league games without a win stretched to six after they suffered their second league defeat in Wednesday night’s game against St Panteleimon. The whole of the game was played in heavy torrential rain, although the 4G pitch at Hertford meant that the game was never in any danger.
The Green side made a shaky start to the game and were punished for giving the ball away in their own half in the 3rd minute, as Guilhelme Monti ran through and hit a low shot out of Austin Byfield’s reach into the corner of the net.
Leverstock finally got going in the 15th minute as Chris Blunden and Radu Mihai Stefanoaica combined on a quick break. Stefanoaica’s shot was blocked, painfully by his teammate Ethan Mooney, and Blunden hit the rebound just over the bar. Three minutes later the two combined again as Stefanoaica crossed from the right touchline. The cross was missed by a defender and found Blunden in front of goal to shoot home the equaliser.
It should have been 2 1 in the 34th minute in a goalmouth scramble following a corner, but both Blunden and Mooney had shots cleared offline. Blunden went close again two minutes later with a dipping effort that went just over the bar. An entertaining half between two evenly matched sides finished with the score at 1 1.
As the rain got even heavier, the second half produced somewhat less in the way of goalmouth action at both ends. The home side were reduced to ten men in the 57th minute as the goalscorer Monti was booked for diving and received his second yellow card.
Leverstock didn’t make the most of their numerical advantage, although they had a couple of chances. On 70 minutes a pass from Ibrahim Nagheeb gave Stefanoaica a run at goal, but his shot was deflected wide, while on 76 minutes a pass from Blunden set up a shot for substitute Elgeniy Daalberg, but his effort went across goal and wide. Disaster struck on 79 minutes when home forward Dean Morgan took advantage of Leverstock being caught short at the back to fire home a shot from the edge of the box for a 2-1 St Panteleimon lead.
Leverstock had produced miraculous late equalisers for 2 2 draws in both of the FA Cup ties against St Panteleimon earlier in the season, but they couldn’t repeat the magic this time, and their chances were further hampered by Blunden having to go off injured in the 81st minute.

And Should Be Taken With A Pinch Of Salt
It was an excellent weekend as five SSML sides booked their passage into the Isuzu FA Vase Third Round, this the highest number for many a year. Old Bradwell United scored eleven on the road. Crawley Green hit London Colney for six. Rugby Borough find the target six times in the first half however failed to add to their tally in the second period.
The weekend began and ended with Isuzu FA Vase action as six SSML sides looked to reach the Third Round. Friday night saw Dunstable Town hosting Essex Senior League table toppers Enfield and in a hard fought tight affair a solitary goal from recent signing Danny Webb eight minutes from time saw them progress. Saturday saw more successes for SSML clubs as all four in action made it five from five booking their place in the hat for the next round draw, Leighton Town returned from their trip to Essex Senior League side Saffron Walden Town with a 2 0 victory while Biggleswade United reached the Third Round for the first time in their history thanks to a 3 0 home success against former SSML club London Lions. St Panteleimon required a penalty shoot out to dispense of Eastern Counties League Premier Division side Sheringham following a 3 3 home draw while it was also a penalty shoot out that saw Tring Athletic overcome visiting Eastern Counties League Division One South side Burnham Ramblers after the tie had finished 1 1. On Sunday Baldock Town looked to make it a clean sweep for the SSML in what was a tough fixture against the holders Newport Pagnell Town, alas it was not to be as the United Counties League visitors won 4 1.
Stotfold remain the target to chase at the top of the Premier Division despite suffering a 0 3 reverse at Potton United, the hosts climbing to fifth as a result and more on this one later in the ramblings. Crawley Green climb to second two points behind the leaders after sweeping aside bottom club London Colney, the hosts comfortable 6 0 winners while Shefford Town & Campton lose ground in the promotion race after being beaten by a solitary goal by Harpenden Town, this was the visitors first league win since the 15th October. Elsewhere Colney Heath recorded a 2-0 win at fellow strugglers Arlesey Town while draw specialists Leverstock Green recorded their seventh league draw with a 3 3 result at home against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. In the two other Premier Division fixtures Risborough Rangers enjoyed a 2 1 success at Hoddesdon Town while Cockfosters and Ardley United drew 1 1 in North London.
It was a good day for Division One leaders Real Bedford FC, and they were without a game, second placed Northampton Sileby Rangers failed to close the twelve point gap as they were beaten 1 4 at home against fellow title chasers Eaton Socon, the visitors climb to fourth as a result. Amersham Town remain third after winning by the odd goal in five at Winslow United and more on this later in the ramblings. At the other end of the table bottom club Holmer Green picked up a useful point following a 3 3 draw at Rushden & Higham United while the pressure continues to mount on London Tigers after going down 0 3 at home against play off chasing Ampthill Town. Elsewhere Raunds Town were beaten by the odd goal in seven by visiting Lutterworth Athletic while Wellingborough Whitworth moved out of the bottom three thanks to a 2 1 success at Letchworth Garden City Eagles. Burton Park Wanderers recent run of good form continued with a 3 0 win against visiting Langford and Rugby Borough remain in the play off places following a 6 2 home win over Buckingham Athletic, the hosts killing the game with six unanswered first half goals with the first coming after just 17 seconds. The day’s other game saw much needed point puts them level on points with Moulton FC share the spoils with visiting Northampton ON Chenecks, the game finishing 1 1.
Thame United Reserves progressed to the quarterfinals of the Oxfordshire Intermediate Cup with a victory at Summertown Stars, the visitors put aside their poor league form with a 3 1 win against their Oxfordshire Senior League Division One hosts.
Totternhoe moved to within one point of Division Two leaders New Bradwell St Peter with a 4 0 home success against Berkhamsted Raiders, ‘Totts’ now third have a game in hand after making it nine wins from nine in the league. Potton United Development doubled their league points tally with a 3 1 win at bottom club The 61FC (Luton) while in the day’s other league action Bovingdon climbed to thirteenth following a 3 0 win at Risborough Rangers Development.
Codicote booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Division Two Cup thanks to a penalty shoot out success at Milton Keynes College Football Academy, the visitors led 2 0 at the break but were pegged back to 3 3 after the interval.
Sarratt’s hopes in the Anagram Records Trophy ended with a Third Round home defeat against Herts County League side Chipperfield Corinthians, the visitors winning 5-1 after the hosts had led at the break.
Five goals in ten minutes shortly before in interval cemented Old Bradwell United’s passage into the Third Round of the Berks & Bucks Charles Twelftrees Trophy, the visitors ending the half 7 0 up and went on to inflict a 11 0 defeat on hosts Aylesbury Vale. Elsewhere in the Second Round Pitstone & Ivinghoe won an all SSML tie 4 0 against visiting New Bradwell St Peter while Aston Clinton edged out hosts Wingrave by the odd goal in five. The day’s other tie saw Buckingham United advance curtesy of a 5 1 win at Chesham United Youth.
SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Winslow United and pens the following report: A bright sunny day in Winslow saw the hosts entertain Amersham town on a great looking pitch and in front of a good crowd at The Gate. The traditional minutes silence was quietly observed before the kick off. It was an even first half as both teams had good chances, but the important first goal fell to Town when Jamie Speer scored from the edge of the box on 12 minutes. United should have levelled the game but their player somehow headed the ball away from goal instead of into the empty net on 19 minutes. It could have been worse for United, but Amersham missed an open goal just before half time. United started the second half brightly but soon faded as Amersham began to take control. United missed a good chance to score on 59 minutes and saw another effort just clear the Town bar. Now Town took advantage, and they scored again on 70 minutes when a shot hit a post and rebounded to substitute Aldis Aliu who scored. Another Town shot hit another goal post on 75 minute and once again the rebound was struck home by Sean Clement Peter to put the visitors 3-0 ahead. There were other good chances for Town, but they were missed. Back came United late in the game and they scored on 80 minutes from a shot that flew through a crowd of players. Deep into time added on, United scored again when Arron King dispatched a penalty kick. However, there was no time to try and get a third goal and the game finished with a 3 2 win for Amersham. It was an entertaining match but spoilt by some niggly fouls and gamesmanship. Whilst the referee, to his credit, tried to play advantages, the players did not seem to want it, and this contributed to eight yellow cards being issued during the 90 minutes. A poor day at the office for Winslow.
SSMFL Vice Chairman Tony Weight was at Potton United and pens the following report: On a balmy afternoon more akin to April than November, League leaders Stotfold were humbled by a resurgent Potton United side, according to regulars, playing their best football of the season. Apart from some early pressure, Stotfold were not themselves for almost the entire match and their attack was completely dominated by the two dominant Potton centre backs. A speculative cross cum shot caught the away keeper out of position to give Potton the lead in the first half and it was no surprise when Potton increased their lead when their right back appeared in the penalty area to head home. A two nil deficit at half time was recoverable but Stotfold never looked likely to get back in the match and Potton increased their lead midway through the second half to run out comfortable 3 0 winners. The only save the home keeper made was in added time after 90 minutes. A bad day at
the office for the League leaders, but an excellent win for Potton. The hospitality as usual was excellent, but the attendance was a little disappointing given it was a local derby.
The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 156 votes cast is:
Potton United 49.4% Old Bradwell United 21.8% Rugby Borough 17.3% Biggleswade United 11.5%

Dunstable Town, who lost for the first time in the league on Saturday, saw hopes of Gladwish Challenge Trophy glory extinguished when a last minute goal saw Division One Moulton FC book their place in the Third Round, the visitors winning by the odd foal in five.
Tuesday night saw four Premier Division games that all resulted in home wins, the games saw the top three all in action, leaders Stotfold welcomed struggling Colney Heath and came out on top by the odd goal in seven while third placed Leighton Town overcame the challenge of visiting Harpenden Town more comfortably, the hosts winning 3 0 and as a result climbed one place on the standings. Shefford Town & Campton began the night in second place but returned home pointless from their trip to Tring Athletic as the hosts edged them out thanks to a 4 2 success while in the nights other action a goal in each half was enough to reward Baldock Town with points against visiting Risborough Rangers. Leverstock Green Football Club was formed around 1895. The first match reports appeared on January 4th, 1896, in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers.
The first competitive fixtures were reported during season 1908/1909 when the Club competed in Division Three of the West Herts League. Other clubs competing in the league at that time were: Abbots Langley, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Bushey Heath, Hagden Lane, Kings Langley and Potten End.
The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timber built changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960’s by the existing brick built clubhouse and changing rooms.
On the death of the Lord, certain parcels of land, including that on which the Football Club stood, fell to the Crown in lieu of death duties and is administered on its behalf by the Commission for New Towns, who have remained the Club’s landlords since that time, despite two unsuccessful attempts by the Club to buy the freehold.
The club remained members of the West Herts League until 1954 when it broadened its horizons and successfully applied to join the Herts County League.
By the mid 1970’s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail, and the installation of training lights.
The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years.
In 1991 the Club were accepted into the South Midlands League and had two highly successful seasons in the Premier Division before being forced to drop into the Senior Division, as floodlights were then not available. In 1996 the club finished in runners up position and the following season were the divisional champions but could not be promoted because floodlights had still not received approval from the Council.
Premier Division status was eventually regained in 2003, and the club is now the longest-standing current member of the division. The club’s highest finish in the Premier Division has been 4th, in season 2010/11, with top six finishes also being recorded in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2008/09.
Season 2010/11 also saw the club’s best ever run in the FA Vase, with wins over Welwyn Garden City, Enfield, Hullbridge Sports, Tunbridge Wells and Bemerton Heath Harlequins before defeat in the Fifth Round against Rye United. The club has twice reached the Third Round of the FA Vase, in seasons 2006/07 and 2018/19.
Leverstock Green entered the FA Cup for the first time in 2004, and the club’s best performance has been reaching the Second Round Qualifying, which was achieved in 2014/15, where we were beaten by Staines Town, and in 2018/19 where we were beaten by Dorking Wanderers.
County honours were won in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as the Herts Charity Shield was lifted, and the club were beaten finalists in the Herts Charity Cup in 2011/12. After finishing runners-up four times over the previous 12 years, The West Herts FA St Mary’s Cup was finally lifted for the first time in 2017/18 with victory over Berkhamsted in the final at Vauxhall Road.
Between 2005 and 2015 the club ran a successful Ladies’ Team, which rose from the Beds and Herts League into the Eastern Region Woman’s League, reaching the Premier Division in 2013.
The under 18 side competes in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. The team finished runners-up in their division in seasons 2010/11 and 2014/15, and in 2015/16 they reached the final of both the Brian Hitchings Cup and the Colwyn Cup, losing in both finals to Luton Town Cedars. Many players have made the step up from under-18 level to first team level, and those who have gone on to play much higher up the non league pyramid include Charlie Gorman (Eastbourne Borough), Luke Warner Eley (Royston Town, St Albans City) and Jonathan Lacey (Hemel Hempstead Town) who also represented the England non-league side in the Falklands while a Leverstock Green player.
The Pancake Lane ground has seen many improvements due to ever more stringent ground grading requirements. In 2007 the Peter Metcalfe changing rooms were built at a cost of £90,000. 2008 saw the refurbishment of the clubhouse to include new toilets and a new hospitality suite. In 2009 the concrete walkway was completed to cover three sides of the ground and a seated stand accommodating 113 spectators was installed.
Season 2018/19 was one of turmoil and sadness, as long serving fixture secretary Graham Smart passed away suddenly only weeks after taking on the role of interim chairman. A season which promised so much at the start ended with the club only securing Premier Division safety on the final day.
Emma Smart took over as chairman for season 2019/20, and with a new management team and a new spirit of optimism the club was on course for a safe mid table finish before the season was brought to a premature end by Covid 19. The management team of Matt Harding and Mick Vipond continued into the 2020/21 season, which again came to a premature end. For season 2021/22, a new management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Paul Marks has been appointed. The club has increased its commitment to youth development by joining the Eastern Junior Alliance and will be running an under15 side this season.
Three club stalwarts have received awards from the Football Association and the Herts FA for 50 years’ service to football. The first was Jim Matthews, affectionately known as “Macca”, who passed away at the age of 90 in 2006. The second was Bill Dawes in 2014, and the third was long serving club secretary Brian Barter in 2019. Brian stood down from his role as secretary in 2020, having twice been honoured with awards from the Spartan South Midlands League.

As usual I only see the second half after manning the date with Steve, 91 attendance which is very good for The Green.
Lots of goals in a game we should have won when leading 3 2 with a minute to play. No one happy with the draw but both sides played well Kit Aid
The game was sponsored by Derrick Williams from Kit Aid. A charity which distributes old kit to Africa. They put up a trophy for the winners to keep, called the Kit Aid Supporters Cup, which drew to the game being a draw is held over until we play Aylesbury Vale at their place later in the season.
We held a minute’s silence at our games this week, with the Under 18’s on Thursday and the first team on Saturday followed by Under 16’s on Sunday. The Wreath was laid on the center spot and the last post was played. Well done one and all, 3 games, 6 teams, 3 sets of officials and all the supporters and club officials.
Referee John WynneSpecial mention from the game on Saturday on the refereeing from John Wynne and old mate of mine. The quote from Bill was the best we have seen this season, well done John.
On Monday Homes England visited us and run an EPC check on our electricity efficiency. This is required for a new lease on the ground and is part of the journey to get the new one signed. This will safeguard the club’s future

Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons.
At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter Step Play Offs.
This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted.
The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play Off Criteria
12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG.
It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
