It is with great sadness that we must report the recent passing of Lol Bolino, former Vice Chair of Hertfordshire FA From his early days as a player with Hemel Hempstead Rovers in the early 1950s, through many decades as a match official, Lawrence ‘Lol’ Bolino had a lifelong love of football. A dedicated servant of the game, he held a great many roles during a long and distinguished career as a volunteer across Hertfordshire, from Chair of the Hemel Hempstead and District Referee’s Society, Chair of the Hemel Minors League, through to President of Leverstock Green FC. He also served on the Hertfordshire Youth FA, back when it was a separate entity, becoming a member of Hertfordshire FA when the two merged. Lol was widely recognised as a hard-working and knowledgeable colleague, serving the Association in many different capacities on numerous committees down the years. These qualities were recognised by the Hertfordshire FA Council who later elected him to serve as Vice Chair, a position he held through to his retirement at the age of 75, when he became Honorary Vice President. His contribution to the game was considerable and his loss will be keenly felt throughout the Hertfordshire football community. Graham Phillips, Chair of Hertfordshire FA said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of Lol’s passing. I had the pleasure of working alongside him for many years and his commitment for developing the game, particularly for young people was unwavering. The impact of his efforts will continue to be felt for years to come”. Bill Dawes who served alongside Lol at both Hertfordshire FA and Leverstock Green FC said “From first encountering him as a referee in a game I was playing in back in the 1960s, our paths crossed and combined a great deal over the years and we became good friends. I got to see first-hand his passion for the game and it was a privilege to follow in his footsteps, he will be sadly missed.” Everyone at Hertfordshire FA sends their sincere condolences to his family and friends and our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time. Funeral Arrangements For those that wish to pay their respects, the funeral will be held at West Herts Crematorium in Watford on Thursday 16th December 2021 at 12.40 pm. Anyone attending is invited by the family to join afterwards at Hemel Hempstead FC for refreshments. They have however requested that only family bring flowers and that others are invited to make a donation to British Heart Foundation in his honour.

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE Saturday 4th December

PREMIER DIVISION Risborough Rangers returned to the top of the table following Saturday’s fixtures, Rangers defeating Milton Keynes Irish 2-1 at home while morning leaders Leighton Town were beaten by third placed New Salamis (more on this one later in the ramblings). At the bottom it’s as you were with the bottom four all being defeated, London Colney winning 4-1 at bottom club Crawley Green while Baldock Town fell to a solitary goal defeat at Oxhey Jets to remain in the second of the relegation places. Tring Athletic were beaten 0-3 at the hands of improving Dunstable Town and Holmer Green were thumped at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos in a drama packed game that saw two lengthy stoppages, the result being the hosts biggest SSML win. Elsewhere Flackwell Heath enjoyed a 2-0 success at Ardley United while Harpenden Town dropped two points in their promotion bid with a 1-1 draw at Arlesey Town, the hosts now under new management. The day’s other action saw Broadfields United defeating their previous landlords Harefield United 4-1 while Hadley edged out hosts Leverstock Green by the odd goal in three. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below. DIVISION ONE With leaders Stotfold involved in County Cup action second placed Winslow United took full advantage to close the gap to three points with a 4-1 home success against struggling Burton Park Wanderers while Buckingham Athletic lost ground after a 2-3 defeat at Bedford, the hosts moving into fifth place as a result of their win. At the other end of the table bottom club Irchester United picked up their fifth point of the campaign with a 2-2 draw with visiting Penn & Tylers Green while Amersham Town also picked up a useful point after their goalless draw with visiting Kidlington Reserves. Elsewhere Northampton Sileby Rangers thumped London Tigers 5-0 and Letchworth Garden City Eagles enjoyed an odd goal in three over visiting Raunds Town. The day’s other action saw Long Crendon held to a goalless draw at home against Thame United Reserves in front of a crowd of 125. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below. BEDS SENIOR TROPHY Quarter Finals It was 3-0 to the SSML against the Beds County League Premier Division in the Beds Senior Trophy Quarter Finals as Stotford, Langford and Shefford Town & Campton all progressed to ensure at least one SSML side will contest this season’s Final. Stotford defeated visiting Cranfield United 2-0, Langford overcame Riseley Sports 3-1 at home while Shefford Town & Campton secured a solitary goal success at Crawley Green Reserves. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below. LES UNDERWOOD JUNIOR CUP Third Round Rushden & Higham United booked their passage into the next round of the Les Underwood Junior Cup with a 2-1 success at home against ChromaSport Northants Combination League side Woodford United. Full result and goalscorers are listed below.

2

DIVISION TWO Bovingdon made it six wins from their last six games with a 5-1 success at Buckingham United and as a result climbed to second place in the standings while Milton Keynes College Football Academy recorded their third successive league win with a 3-1 success at home against The 61FC (Luton), a result that moved them up to third place. Old Bradwell United continue to top the table following a 4-0 success against visiting Risborough Rangers Development. At the other end of the table Tring Corinthians AFC remain rooted at the bottom after going down 0-5 at Pitstone & Ivinghoe. Elsewhere Totternhoe dropped to fifth following a 0-2 defeat at Eynesbury United while Aston Clinton defeated visiting Berkhamsted Raiders 5-1. The day’s other action saw Sarratt claim a valuable point after a goalless draw at New Bradwell St Peter. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. COMMITTEE AWAYDAYS SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Leighton Town on Saturday and sends this report – A crowd of over 300 watched the top of the table fixture between hosts Leighton Town and visitors New Salamis. In an entertaining hard fought match, it was Salamis who edged a narrow win to dent the title ambitions of the hosts. This was the proverbial game of two halves as the home team squandered numerous first half changes to score, including two one on ones with the Salamis goalkeeper who made crucial saves on both occasions. There was also a goal line clearance which somehow enabled Salamis to keep a clean sheet at half time, Little was seen of the Salamis attack in the first half but it sprang into life in only minutes after the restart when Leighton lost the ball in defence and a swift cross field pass found George Lutaaya free to score from inside the penalty area, Another Salamis effort was well saved by the home keeper and he provided another great save from a free kick. Leighton tried to respond and they did have a couple of chances, one cleared off the line and another hitting the top of the crossbar. As the game drifted towards the final quarter, Leighton seemed to lose their composure and despite winning a free kick, Leon Lobjoit talked himself into the referee’s book and also into the sin bin and for a crucial ten minutes Leighton were reduced to ten men. It did not end there as when Lobjoit returned to the pitch, shortly after, home player Tom Silford received a second yellow card and once again Leighton were reduced to ten men for the final few minutes of the game. The general impression of the game was that Leighton should have been out of sight in the first half whilst Salamis kept their composure and managed the game well to seal a vital win. AND FINALLY The Oxhey Jets jinx has struck again, for the third time this season there has been a management casualty after playing Oxhey Jets, the latest being Baldock Town where Rob Bates departed soon after being beaten at Jets. So management beware playing Oxhey Jets can seriously damage your career. Don’t forget that every Sunday afternoon the Non-League Show on Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds & Bucks), a show all about local non-league football. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Baldock Town 0 - Leverstock Green 1 Saturday 11th December 2021 Leverstock Green picked up another valuable three points from a very hard-fought battle of a game on Saturday. In a match played in constant rain on a heavy pitch at Arlesey, Fergus Moore’s side held off a spirited challenge from Baldock Town and notched the win thanks to a second half penalty. Baldock have only won three league games all season, but they took the game to Leverstock from the start and had much the better of the possession in the early stages. However, the Green defence was also in determined mood, and although the home side won a number of corners they did not force a save out of Leverstock keeper Alfie Bonfield. Leverstock didn’t start to get hold of the ball until 20 minutes into the game. In the 22nd minute Ollie Cox delivered a free kick into the box which was headed over the bar by Kian Wilkes. On 26 minutes Ethan Mooney hit a shot which was comfortably gathered by the home keeper. Leverstock won a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box in the 30th minute, but Cox’s effort was well over the bar. Wilkes required a lengthy period of treatment after a collision with an opponent, but was able to continue after a change of shirt due to blood. The first half ended goalless despite a lot of effort from both sides, but it was Leverstock who came out looking the brighter side at the start of the second half. Three minutes in a pass from Cox gave Lewis Collins a run at goal, and after a couple of twists and turns in the box, Collins hit a shot which was just about saved by the keeper at his near post. On 56 minutes Collins ran onto a great pass from Dan Weeks and could have had a shot, but instead laid off to Ollie Lawford, who hesitated a second too long and wasn’t able to get his shot away. A minute later Collins was threatening again with a run down the left edge of the penalty area, and when his progress was impeded by a tug from behind, it was spotted by the referee who pointed to the penalty spot. Lawford stepped up to take the spot kick, and successfully slotted it to the keeper’s right to put Leverstock into a 1-0 lead. Scott McGleish replaced Lawford in the 65th minute and the veteran almost notched his first goal for the club within a minute of coming on, but his effort went just wide. Baldock continued to push forward, and Leverstock spent much of the last 15 minutes of the game camped in their own half. There was a chance of a second goal in the 76th minute when the Green side broke away from a Baldock corner. Collins played it through to Wilkes, but his effort went over the bar. Baldock won three successive corners deep into stoppage time, but the Leverstock side kept their concentration and their discipline to hold out for the win and the clean sheet. Aylesbury Vale Dynamos FC History Aylesbury Vale Dynamos is an amalgamation of Aylesbury FC and Bedgrove Dynamos, two local clubs with a rich history in local football. Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury. In 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr. Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hard working committee fought hard to establish. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006. Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. . After Christmas the side suffered due to long-term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed

under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last 'level five' team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus. Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming 'Double Winners' Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central. Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league. The 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions, but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham, Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back room staff for the 2017/18 season. In 2018/19 Scott Reynolds was appointed manager and when he resigned midway through the season it was left to Paul Bonham to take control but because of ground grading issues the Southern League made the decision to relegate the club and so after ten seasons in the Southern League. Phil Granville and Ben Gill were appointed midway through last season and will kick off the 2020/21 season again in the Spartan Premier Division. Steve Bateman was re appointed as manager in September 2021. Bedgrove Dynamos Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12's Aylesbury & District League (ADL), but went on to win the 13's & 14's league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups. Over the years the club has grown and has won many tournaments and trophies, especially at county level. Many teams have toured abroad and the club has also entertained boys from Europe and America. We can boost that we are the only boys club to have a club pennant on display in Barcelona's trophy room. At the start of the season 2001/02 the club was the largest junior club in the Aylesbury area, running teams from under 8's through to under 18's. At the end of the season 2001/02 the club managed to win the coveted Berks and Bucks Cup at under 14's, the Mayor's Cup at under 12's, represented in two other cup finals, won 3 league titles, gained 6 promotions in total and all teams finished in the top 6 to the fair play awards for their respective leagues. In the last 20 seasons across the age groups the club has won 25 divisional titles, and runners up 20 times. In 2019 two became one when the sides amalgamated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football and play at the highest possible level.

Be aware of your own personal health. If you show any of the Covid-19 symptoms you must stay at home, inform NHS Test and Trace and seek medical advice. Be responsible. Read the guidance provided by The FA and by your club so that you are aware of the changes to the game and what is expected of you. This will include things like being prepared to wash your own kit, bringing your own labelled water bottle and being aware of changes to meet-up times. Practise good hygiene. Wash your hands regularly and before, during and after a game. Where possible maintain social distancing. This won’t always be possible in a competitive match environment (for example when tackling an opponent) and that is acceptable. However, before, and after a game you should maintain social distancing. Use the extra dugout chairs for social distancing Support NHS Test and Trace. You’re likely to be asked to provide your details so that in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak those potentially infected can be traced. This is to everyone’s benefit so please co-operate. Do not spit. Spitting and the rinsing out of mouths is now a recognised risk to health and must not be done. Avoid shouting or raising your voice if face to face with other players. After the game. Be aware that other users may be waiting to use the facilities. Changing rooms and showers are likely to be closed and any socialising must follow the Government’s guidance on social distancing.
