Breast Cancer Care Nick Payne Fundraising In 2017, Dawn was diagnosed with breast cancer and successfully underwent chemotherapy. Sadly following a reoccurrence she passed away on 28th August 2019. We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up or fight like hell. Unfortunately at the young age of 44, Dawn lost her battle but by only working together can we win the war. £1000 will kit out a PhD student with everything they need to beat cancer sooner, helping to train the researchers of tomorrow. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dawnpayne44

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE Tuesday 15th February / Wednesday 16th February

MIDWEEK HEADLINES Once again the moisture in the air curtailed the midweek fixtures with no less than ten cup-ties falling foul of the weather leaving the Fixture Secretary racing to her darkened room to re-schedule. For the three that were played it was a case of record crowds at two of them. Leighton Town announced a new high for the SSML with 868 witnessing their County Cup game with Luton Town only for that figure to be smashed twenty minutes later when it was announced 1,904 watched the Long Crendon v Wycombe Wanderers County Cup tie with even better news coming when the professional club waived their share of the gate receipts. Midweek brought about 8 goals from the 3 games (an average of 2.66 per game). Midweek Stats: 3 games played of which 2 were away wins and 1 draw. (Most League Wins – all Divisions): 21 Stotfold, 20 New Salamis, Winslow United, and 19 Risborough Rangers. (Most League Draws – all Divisions): 8 Penn & Tylers Green, 7 Arlesey Town, Dunstable Town, Harefield United, Leighton Town, 6 Ardley United, Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, Milton Keynes Irish, Ampthill Town, Bedford, Thame United Reserves. (Most League Defeats – all Divisions): 23 Irchester United, 19 Crawley Green, 18 Burton Park Wanderers, and London Tigers. Without a Draw: (Division Two League): Aston Clinton and Codicote. Most Goals Scored: (Premier Division League): 78 New Salamis. (Division One League): 88 Stotfold. (Division Two League): 71 Old Bradwell United. Midweek Highest Attendances: 1904 Long Crendon v Wycombe Wanderers (Berks & Bucks Senior Cup), 868 Leighton Town v Luton Town (Beds Senior Cup) and 120 Langford v Stotfold (Gladwish Challenge Trophy). Season’s Highest Attendances to date (Premier Division Clubs): 868 Leighton Town v Luton Town (Beds Senior Cup), 473 Leighton Town v Broadfields United and 449 Leighton Town v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. Season’s Highest Attendances to date (Division One Clubs): 1904 Long Crendon v Wycombe Wanderers (Berks & Bucks Senior Cup), 533 Stotfold v Winslow United and 404 Stotfold v Ampthill Town. Season’s Highest Attendances to date (Division Two Clubs): 212 Bovingdon v Totternhoe, 175 Bovingdon v Berkhamsted Raiders and 134 Totternhoe v Leighton Town (Gladwish Challenge Trophy). THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Third Round Two first half goals were enough for Stotfold to become the first team through to the quarter-finals of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy at the expense of fellow Division One side Langford, the game at Langford being the only action on Wednesday night. Stotfold now await the draw to find out who they will face in the last eight. BEDS SENIOR CUP Quarter Final Leighton Town booked their place in the semi-finals of the Beds Senior Cup thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over a very youthful Luton Town side at Bell Close. The game was well contested by both clubs with goal scoring opportunities few and far between and at one stage looked to be heading for a goalless draw until late on, the visitors breaking the deadlock with just seven minutes remaining, but never write off this Leighton Town side and with the majority of the big crowd behind them and roaring them on they leveled the tie in stoppage time to set up the drama of the penalty shoot-out, the hosts being clinical from the spot scoring all four while Luton missed twice . BERKS & BUCKS SENIOR CUP Quarter Final ‘The Dream Is Over’ as Long Crendon bowed out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup on Tuesday night however they can be proud of themselves. Having already claimed a couple of Step 4 scalps in their run to the quarterfinals they found the obstacle of Football League side Wycombe Wanderers un-climbable and were defeated 0-4 against a very strong visiting outfit that included several players with first team experience. AND FINALLY Don’t forget that every Sunday afternoon the Non-League Show on Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds & Bucks), a show all about local non-league football. The popular show presented by Ollie Bayliss has been increased to two hours each week and is the perfect opportunity to catch up with our local non-league scene at all levels. PREMIER DIVISION Two Premier Division games survived the cull of postponements, leaders New Salamis were held 1-1 at home by Harpenden Town while Arlesey Town won by the odd goal in three at bottom club Crawley Green, interesting fact was all the goals at both games were scored in the first half. DIVISION ONE Long Crendon moved back into the play-off places with a 4-1 home win over visiting Burton Park Wanderers on the day’s only Division One fixture to beat the storm thanks to a 3G surface although after all the midweek euphoria the hosts would have been disappointed with the low turn-out. DIVISION TWO Two games survived the storms, one played on 3G the other on grass. Pitstone & Ivinghoe ran riot in their ‘derby’ game with Totternhoe, the hosts winning 7-0, their biggest home win since putting nine past The 61FC (Luton) back in October 2019. The other action saw Milton Keynes College Football Academy defeating visiting bottom of the table Tring Corinthians AFC 3-1. The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 171 votes cast is:Pitstone & Ivinghoe 55.6% Milton Keynes College Football Academy 18.7% Long Crendon 16.8% Arlesey Town 9.9%

Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Leverstock Green 0 New Salamis 2 Saturday 5th February 2022 Leverstock Green’s run of three league games against sides in the top four opened with a home defeat against New Salamis, who climbed to the top of the league with this result. It was a game of few chances, and Leverstock played some good football at times, but were unable to create many clear-cut chances against an experienced and well-organised defence. Things could have been different if a decision had gone their way in the 6th minute. Rawn Seale chased a through ball and was bumped off the ball by visiting keeper Sam Soutar, who was way out of his goal. It looked as though the foul occurred just inside the angle of the penalty area, but the linesman insisted it was outside, and Leverstock were awarded a free kick just outside the box instead of a penalty. Ollie Cox’s shot took a deflection but Soutar gathered the ball. Soutar was in action again three minutes later as Seale ran onto a through ball but couldn’t get a shot away before the keeper dived at his feet to claim the ball. Leverstock had seen more of the ball in the early stages, but it was New Salamis who took the lead in the 22nd minute with their first real effort of the game. A cross from the right found Elijah Ogunseye, whose shot looped over Alfie Bonfield into the corner of the net. The Green side almost found a response within two minutes. Elgeniy Daalberg made a great run into the box and put the ball across the face of goal where Seale was coming in at the far post, but defender Freddy Tandon got there just ahead of Seale to clear the ball. In the closing minutes of the half Seale had another half chance when the ball dropped for him on the edge of the six-yard box, but his shot was blocked by a defender. The second half was similarly short on chances, with Leverstock still struggling to get any change out of the New Salamis defence. Their task was made even harder when the visitors added a second goal in the 73rd minute, a disappointing goal to concede as Charne Lemba rose unchallenged at the far post to head home a corner. Lewis Collins and Paplamin Jawara both came off the bench to make their return from injury, and with Scott McGleish coming on for the last 15 minutes there was a flurry of late chances. In the 78th minute two successive corners had to be cleared off the line, and there was a clear chance for skipper Dan Weeks, who suddenly found himself furthest forward and with only the keeper to beat, but a defender recovered quickly to charge down Weeks’ shot. In the 82nd minute a long throw into the box was flicked on to Collins at the far post, but he rushed his shot and ballooned it over the bar. Two minutes later Jack Allen got on the end of a free kick but headed over. In the 87th minute Leverstock had a free kick in a dangerous position outside the box, but Jawara couldn’t keep his effort under the bar. Having survived the spell of pressure unscathed the visitors almost added a third in the 88th minute, but Derek Asamoah’s shot was kept out by the post. Their two goals proved to be enough to claim the three points. Leverstock Green (0) 0 Team: 1. Alfie Bonfield, 2. Bead Robinson, 3. Rio Beach, 4. Dan Weeks, 5. Jack Allen, 6. Kian Wilkes, 7. Elgeniy Daalberg (17. Scott McGleish 76 mins), 8. Dan Pett, 9. Rawn Seale, 10. Ryan Carruthers (14. Paplamin Jawara 56 mins), 11. Ollie Cox (12. Lewis Collins 66 mins). Subs not used: 16. Man of the Match versus Risborough Rangers Rio Beach

Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Risborough Rangers 4 - Leverstock Green 1 Tuesday 8th February 2022 For the second time in four days Leverstock Green were beaten by a side who went to the top of the league with their three points. The scoreline may suggest that Leverstock were well beaten, but that was certainly not the case. Fergus Moore’s side put in a strong and hard-working performance and were competitive throughout the game. Whatever the merits of the Leverstock performance, the only thing being talked about at the end of the game was the performance of the referee, which had a huge influence on how the game went. The first twenty minutes of the game were played at a frantic pace with the ball going from end-to-end, although with little goalmouth action. The first near miss came in the 22nd minute when Risborough’s Kieran Schmidt hit the post with a shot. However, two minutes later it was Leverstock that opened the scoring. There seemed little danger as a defender tried to shepherd the ball back to his keeper, but they ended up leaving it to each other, allowing Elgeniy Daalberg to nip in and take the ball and run it into the empty net. Five minutes later another mistake was almost punished as the keeper kicked the ball out straight to Kian Wilkes, who had an effort at the empty net from near the centre circle, but it went just over. As the game approached the break Leverstock were well worth their lead, but a series of poor decisions from the referee brought the game to a head. An altercation between Ollie Cox and the Risborough keeper resulted in Cox wrongly being sent to the sin-bin, and then once Cox had retreated to the bench and further things were said, Cox was shown a red card. That left the Green side down to ten men for the second half, which started with them still leading 1-0. Wilkes almost doubled the lead in the 54th minute as he intercepted a cross-field pass and ran through to hit a shot just wide. However, two minutes later the scores were level as Marcus Wylie went on a run towards the Green box and hit a low shot through a crowd of players that Alfie Bonfield could not stop. The game started to boil over again in the 60th minute when the referee awarded Risborough a penalty for handball when the ball had clearly been headed away. Wylie netted the spot kick to put Risborough 2-1 up. The ensuing protests resulted in Leverstock being temporarily reduced to nine men with Dan Weeks sent to the sin-bin. If the first penalty decision wasn’t bad enough, there was a second penalty awarded to Risborough in the 66th minute for an absurd theatrical fall, but all it needed was for one of their players to shout for the penalty, and it was duly given. However, this time Bonfield produced a great save to keep the score at 2-1. There was another incident in the 71st minute as a high boot from Risborough’s Aaron Jewel left Paul Marks with a head injury, and Jewel was shown a straight red card. At this stage it was 10 v 8 as Leverstock still had Weeks in the sinbin and Marks having his head injury bandaged up, but both players returned to the pitch to make it 10 v 10. Dan Pett almost levelled the scores in the 77th minute as he was through on goal but the keeper produced a great save to keep his shot out. The game had been closely contested throughout, but two late goals gave the final score a lopsided look.

Sean Coles capitalised on a mistake at the back to stab home a third goal in the 87th minute, and as Leverstock continued to chase the game they were caught out again at the back as Gavin James lobbed Bonfield in the 90th minute. Ardley United FC History Ardley United were formed in 1945 just after the end of the Second World War. In the early years, the club plied its trade in the Lord Jersey FA and played on a pitch, which was situated close to the railway line on the Oxford Road. The 1950’s and ‘60’s were successful for the club as they won both league titles and cups; most notably the Oxfordshire Junior Shield on three occasions as well as many other trophies. The acquisition of the current Playing Field site in the mid-60’s enabled the club to move into the heart of the village, and a number of volunteers led by life-long supporter Doug Hodges built modest changing rooms. Ardley continued to compete in the Jersey League throughout the 70’s and early 80’s without much success but this was to change in the mid-‘80’s with the arrival of Norman Stacey as chairman – a position that he graces to this day. In 1988 the club were promoted to the Oxfordshire Senior League and won the Division One title at the first attempt, following this up with the Premier Division title the following season. Accepting a place in the Hellenic League for the 1993/4 season, Ardley spent six seasons in the ‘old’ Division One winning it in both 1996/7 and 97/8 as well as winning the Division 1 Cup for a record four consecutive seasons before it was merged with the Premier Division Cup to become the Challenge Cup that we know today. The manager during these years was ex-Oxford United leading scorer Peter Foley and he was to be the first in a line of managers to keep Ardley at the forefront who include Paul Spittle, Paul Berry, Dan Still and Kevin Brock among their number. Major change was to come in the early 2000’s as, along with the Ardley Playing Field Committee, Ardley United oversaw the construction of dedicated facilities along with a separate village hall which enabled the club to be independent of community activities. The new clubhouse, which had been awarded the Non-League Paper’s Hungerford Cup for most-improved facilities, allowed the club to be promoted to the Hellenic Premier Division and so began the club’s most successful years to date. Kevin Brock took the reins for seven seasons which saw Ardley win several cups including the Oxfordshire Senior Cup in 2013/14, a season during which they narrowly lost out on the Premier Division title by just two points. Following Brock’s departure, Paul Davis took over as manager for nearly two seasons until the resignation of long-time chairman Norman Stacey in June 2017 for personal reasons. Ian Feaver took over the role of Chairman and appointed Craig Adey as First Team Manager. A decision to be voluntarily relegated to uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West gave everyone some breathing space to adjust to the new regime. Craig brought with him a talented squad of players and they won the Division title gaining promotion back to the Premier Division at the first time of asking. The 2018/2019 season had its ups and downs but the team finished on a high winning the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup. Lee Matthews was appointed manager for the 2020-21 season, after being joint manager with Danial (Elvis) Knight after Craig departed during the 2019-20 season. The club went through a restructure in the back office, leading to Eddie Nix being appointed as Director of Football and the creation of the Ardley United Development team, managed by Carl Reed.

Leverstock Green FC History & Honours First Annual Dinner 1907 Friday 22nd March 1907 - The Gazette reported that: The first annual dinner in connection with the Leverstock Green Football Club was held at the Leather Bottle on Friday evening. Mr.C.E.Moore presided and about 36 sat down to a capital spread, provided by Mr.. A. Seabrook. The visitors included Messer’s C.E.Moore, W.W.Sears, Wright, J.Hallett, H.Sharp and others. After the tables had been cleared the chairman remarked that he knew but little about Leverstock Green Football Club. Still it gave him very much pleasure to be present at their first dinner. After the usual Royal toast the secretary Mr. C. Ingham was asked to read the report. This showed a total income of £7 14s 6d and with expenses of £6 11s 9d a balance of £1 3s 3d. The club had already played 19 matches, won 8 lost 8 and drawn 3. Mr. Ingham said he wished to thank all those gentlemen to whom he would like to propose a vote of thanks and that was Mr. D.Walters for the use of the ground. It was a well known fact that had it not been for Mr. Walters generosity there would not have been a football club, as the matter of ground had always been a great drawback to arranging a cricket club and a football club at Leverstock Green. Mr. W. Dell in reply said that although he was not a player, he had much pleasure in being a member and was proud to hold such a responsible position as treasurer. No doubt they were all aware that this was not the first football club to be formed in Leverstock Green, but he thought they would all agree with him that it was the first club to be formed and carried on in what he called a business like manner, and he considered it was only to that the club owed its success. He thought it had been a successful season for the first, both from the football point of view and also financially. They could not boast of a great balance, but £1 3s in hand at almost the close of the season was much better than being in debt. There was not the slightest doubt that there were many clubs which had a better reputation as far as football was concerned than Leverstock Green that would find themselves in debt, so they had not much to complain of. There was another subject he would like to mention and that was with regard to their secretary. He felt sure that they would all agree that Mr. Ingham had been a very energetic worker both as a player and as a Secretary. He had spared no efforts in arranging matches and carrying out the Secretary’s duties generally. He therefore had much pleasure in proposing the health of and a vote of thanks to Mr. Ingham for his past services. The next toast on the programme was “Success to Leverstock Green Football Club”. In his remarks the Chairman that he thoroughly approved all kinds of sport, and he was pleased to know that the club was carried on in a business like manner. No amount of organisation could change a halfpenny into a penny or a 6d into a shilling, but if the club was properly organized and properly managed it was almost certain to be a success. He had known many villages, but he had never known one where the people were as energetic as at Leverstock Green. There was always something moving for the good of the place. Mr.. Moore then referred to the Parish Room Fund and wished it every success. The toast of “The Officers” was entrusted to Mr. W.W. Sears who said that he was not a member of the club but said that hoped to be another season. Mr. A.Plowman (Captain) briefly replied. The Chairman thanked Mr. Seabrook for providing such a capital dinner which had been thoroughly enjoyed. He was sure they all had good appetites. He thought he could speak on behalf the rest of the members that they thought themselves highly honoured to have Mr. Moore with them at their first dinner. He had called on Mr. Moore on several occasions for his assistance both for concerts and sports and he had never been refused. He therefore proposed the health of Mr. Moore. The toast like most of the others was heartily drunk and accorded musical honours. Those who contributed to the musical part of the programme included Messer’s E.F.Brigginshaw, H.Sharp, and W.How. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very pleasant evening to a close at 10 o’clock. [Gazette 23rd March 1907]

Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons. At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs. This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted. The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
