Ardley continued to compete in the Jersey League throughout the 70’s and early 80’s without much success but this was to change in the mid ‘80’s with the arrival of Norman Stacey as chairman a position that he graces to this day. In 1988 the club were promoted to the Oxfordshire Senior League and won the Division One title at the first attempt, following this up with the Premier Division title the following season.Accepting a place in the Hellenic League for the 1993/4 season, Ardley spent six seasons in the ‘old’ Division One winning it in both 1996/7 and 97/8 as well as winning the Division 1 Cup for a record four consecutive seasons before it was merged with the Premier Division Cup to become the Challenge Cup that we know today. The manager during these years was ex Oxford United leading scorer Peter Foley and he was to be the first in a line of managers to keep Ardley at the forefront who include Paul Spittle, Paul Berry, Dan Still and Kevin Brock among their number.

Craig brought with him a talented squad of players and they won the Division title gaining promotion back to the Premier Division at the first time of asking. The 2018/2019 season had its ups and downs but the team finished on a high winning the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup.

Lee Matthews was appointed manager for the 2020 21 season, after being joint manager with Danial (Elvis)

Ardley United FC History

Major change was to come in the early 2000’s as, along with the Ardley Playing Field Committee, Ardley United oversaw the construction of dedicated facilities along with a separate village hall which enabled the club to be independent of community activities. The new clubhouse, which had been awarded the Non League Paper’s Hungerford Cup for most improved facilities, allowed the club to be promoted to the Hellenic Premier Division and so began the club’s most successful years to date.

Ardley United were formed in 1945 just after the end of the Second World War. In the early years, the club plied its trade in the Lord Jersey FA and played on a pitch which was situated close to the railway line on the Oxford Road. The 1950’s and ‘60’s were successful for the club as they won both league titles and cups; most notably the Oxfordshire Junior Shield on three occasions as well as many other trophies. The acquisition of the current Playing Field site in the mid 60’s enabled the club to move into the heart of the village, and a number of volunteers led by life long supporter Doug Hodges built modest changing rooms.

Kevin Brock took the reins for seven seasons which saw Ardley win several cups including the Oxfordshire Senior Cup in 2013/14, a season during which they narrowly lost out on the Premier Division title by just two points. Following Brock’s departure, Paul Davis took over as manager for nearly two seasons until the resignation of long time chairman Norman Stacey in June 2017 for personal reasons. Ian Feaver took over the role of Chairman and appointed Craig Adey as First Team Manager. A decision to be voluntarily relegated to uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West gave everyone some breathing space to adjust to the new regime.

Leverstock Green 2 Panteleimon 2

Alan Lee Reporting

Leverstock Green’s run of clean sheets ended, but Fergus Moore’s side showed great spirit to fight back from a 2 0 half time deficit and keep their FA Cup hopes alive with a dramatic stoppage time equaliser. The stunning strike from Rio Beach means that Leverstock will travel to Hertford to face St Panteleimon in a Preliminary Round replay on Wednesday night.

Saturday 20th August 2022

could have been a second goal three minutes later as Ayub Albadri had a run at goal, but man of the match Josh Mollison came off his line to make the first of a number of crucial saves. There was a chance for an equaliser on 29 minutes when Luke Beckwith’s cross found Lewis Collins in space, but his header was saved by Pereira, who also saved again five minutes later when Alvin Kyemereh got his head to a cross from Dan Weeks. A minute later Mollison made another great save to keep out a shot from Albadri, but on 37 minutes a foul in the box by Brad Robinson gave St Panteleimon a penalty. Dean Morgan made no mistake from the spot to put the visitors 2 0 up and in control. Two more crucial saves from Mollison in the closing minutes of the half meant that Leverstock were at least still within touching distance as the half time whistle blew. Leverstock had some promising attacks early in the second half, but the goal that got them back in the match in the 59th minute came from a free kick on the edge of the D. Blunden hit another great strike which was too hot for Pereira to hold onto, and Beckwith followed in to head the rebound over the keeper and pull the score back to 2 1. There could have been an equaliser in the 67th minute when a cross from Lewis Collins found Kyemereh just outside the six yard box. The defender made great contact with his shot, but it was straight at Pereira. Leverstock suffered their first injury blow in the 77th minute when Ibrahim Nagheeb had to come off with a groin injury.

Morgan had a great chance to clinch the game for the visitors in the 82nd minute, but somehow hit his shot over the bar from close range. However Leverstock’s chances of saving the game suffered a further blow in the 88th minute when George Mitchell Gears had to be carried off the pitch, and with all three subs already used they were down to ten men. St Panteleimon still held their slender lead going into stoppage time, but Leverstock did not give up battling. As the game went into the fourth minute of stoppage time they had the ball in the visitors’ penalty area, but no one could work a shooting chance, until it rolled out to the edge of the area, where Rio Beach met it with the sweetest of strikes that took a deflection off a defender’s shoulder on its way into the top corner of the net.

Leverstock Green (0) 2 (Beckwith 59, Beach 90+4)

The jubilation was deserved for a much improved second half display, and both teams will be in the hat for Monday’s First Round Qualifying draw before the replay on Wednesday night. Leverstock will go into the game with a stretched squad, with neither Nagheeb and Mitchell Gears standing any chance of recovering in time.

FA Cup Preliminary Round

There were few chances in the early stages, with Leverstock’s best effort coming in the 14th minute with a shot from Ryan Carruthers which keeper Diego Pereira couldn’t hold onto, but Pereira recovered to grab the rebound before Chris Blunden got to it. After 384 minutes without conceding a goal, Leverstock finally let one in as the visitors swung in a 24th minute corner and Clayton Afonso had a free header to put his side into a 1 0 Therelead.

There was still more drama to come, though. A minute before the break, a ball was chipped forward into the Leverstock box. Substitute Brad Robinson got into a spot of confusion with Byfield, and allowed a forward to get in between them to stab the ball home and level the scores at 3 3. Early in the second period Leverstock almost went back in front when Beckwith was through but hit his shot against the bar. There were no further goals in extra time so the tie went to penalties.

Blunden netted Leverstock’s first, while Moura replied for the home side. Carruthers made it 2 1 before Alves levelled at 2 2. Beckwith scored Leverstock’s third, and when Byfield saved from Monti, they had a 3 2 lead. McGleish then made it 4 2, and when Afonso put his kick over the bar it was all over.

side were looking the more dangerous, and they took a deserved lead in the 28th minute when Ahmed Doukhi hit a fierce shot from distance that left Byfield standing as it flew into the net. They should have had a second goal in the 41st minute when Doukhi intercepted a back header from Rio Beach, but with the goal at his mercy he shot wide. Leverstock had a good chance for an equaliser in the 57th minute when Chris Blunden crossed into the six yard box. Lewis Collins slid in at the far post but put the ball just wide. Five minutes later a simple pass down the middle opened up the Green defence and the home side doubled their lead with a shot past Byfield. They were much the better side at this time and had a number of other efforts at goal, some bringing saves out of Byfield and others missing the target or hitting the woodwork.

Leverstock Green (0) 3 (Pett 88, Carruthers 90+2, Daalberg 101)

Alan Lee Reporting

Wednesday 24th August 2022

By contrast Leverstock were creating little and had not even brought a save out of home keeper Diego Pereira. The introduction of Scott McGleish with ten minutes left perked things up, but with two minutes remaining there seemed little chance of saving their FA Cup hopes. However, in the 88th minute Alvin Kyeremeh lofted a pass from has own half towards McGleish near the opposition corner flag. McGleish did well to hold the ball up before laying back to Luke Beckwith, who played a crossfield pass to Dan Pett. Pett controlled the ball with his first touch and ran on to strike a superb shot into the bottom corner of the net with his second touch to give Leverstock a glimmer of hope. The home side were clearly rattled at the prospect of blowing another 2 0 lead, and as Leverstock pushed forward in stoppage time, the equaliser was not long in coming. Dan Weeks hurled a long throw into the box, Kyeremeh flicked it on and Rio Beach headed it on further towards Ryan Carruthers, who controlled it with his first touch, and with his second touch sent another rocket of a shot into the top corner of the net from 25 yards. That took the tie into extra time, and 11 minutes into the first period it looked like the turnaround was complete. Byfield launched a long kick upfield which was flicked on by McGleish. Beckwith picked the ball up, held off the challenge of a defender and laid off to the overlapping Elgeniy Daalberg, who fired home from seven yards to put Leverstock into a 3 2 lead.

Leverstock now have the £1,444 prize money for this round in their pocket, and will now travel to Billericay, relegated last season from National League South, to play in front of a likely 500+ crowd at New Lodge in the First Round Qualifying on 3rd September.

St Panteleimon 3 Leverstock Green 3 AET

Leverstock Green were heading out of the FA Cup, as they trailed St Panteleimon 2 0 in their FA Cup replay with just two minutes to play. However, they produced another amazing comeback to take the tie into extra time, and after a goal apiece during extra time, they held their nerve to win the penalty shoot out 4 2. Their reward is a glamour tie away to Billericay Town in the First Round Qualifying on Saturday 3rd September.

Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay

There was a late change to the Leverstock line up with Austin Byfield replacing Josh Mollison, who was held up in traffic, as the starting goalkeeper. There were few chances early in the game. Ryan Carruthers got the ball across the face of goal in the 11th minute, but no one was there to put it in. In the 18th minute the home side had a free kick in a dangerous position but it was hit low and straight at Byfield. Rio Beach had to clear off the line in the 21st minute, while at the other end a minute later Alvin Kyemereh put the ball into the six yard box, but it was cleared by Renzo

The Leverstock side never looked like getting back into the game in the second half, and the visitors added three further goals. Jaiden Charles ran through to slot home the fourth goal in the 69th minute, Romero Tull lashed home a shot on 82 minutes, and in the 88th minute a clearance from a Green defender cannoned off a Langley player into the net for the sixth goal.

Alan Lee Reporting

Langley had further chances to extend their lead, but it was Leverstock who scored next, levelling the scores in the 39th minute as Dan Payne netted from close range in a scramble following a corner.

The visitors dominated the early stages of the game and took the lead in the 15th minute when Diontae Smith made a run at goal. Green keeper Liam Fortune claimed the ball but couldn’t hold onto it, and the loose ball was netted by Pharell Mitchell.

Leverstock Green’s under-18s exited the FA Youth Cup at the Preliminary Round stage, as they came up against a very strong and skiful Langley side at the Lords Builders Merchants Stadium on Thursday night.

However, the scores were only level briefly as two minutes later Mitchell shot home his second goal from the edge of the penalty area. Langley were pressing again in first half stoppage time, and Fortune made a good save to keep out a third goal, but it only delayed the inevitable for a few seconds as a subsequent shot found the net for a 3 1 half time lead for Langley.

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF

Weekend Stats: 30 games played of which 12 were home wins, 12 away wins and 6 draws.

Aylesbury Vale Dynamos secure a FA Cup giant killing. Dunstable Town also win through. Winslow United hit six on the road. Crawley Green bag five and Arlesey Town gain first point of new campaign.

The weekend began with ten SSML sides looking for FA Cup glory and ended with two securing their places in the next round with another six facing replays. The pick of the results was Aylesbury Vale Dynamos who enjoyed a giant killing 3 1 win over visiting Step 4 side Bristol Manor Farm (and more on this later in the ramblings). Also through are Dunstable Town who overcame West Essex, the hosts winning by the odd goal in three on Sunday. There was late drama at Stotfold where visiting Grays Athletic thought they had won with a 90th minute strike only for the hosts to level before the cheers had died down. The weekend begun on Friday night as Ardley United travelled to Aylesbury United and were unlucky when going down to a solitary goal defeat. Shefford Town & Campton’s debut in the competition as they secured a 1 1 draw at Southend Manor (more on this later in the ramblings) while Leighton Town returned from their trip to Barking with a 0-0 draw. Elsewhere in an all SSML tie hosts Leverstock Green recovered from a 0 2 interval score to secure a 2 2 draw with St Panteleimon while Potton United can also look forward to a midweek replay after a 1 1 draw at Soham Town Rangers. The only disappointment came at Maldon & Tiptree where the hosts ended the dreams of Harpenden Town when winning 2 0. Full results and goalscorers are listed below.

No changes at the top of the standings as the top three maintained their 100% start to the season with wins on the road, leaders Real Bedford FC won 2 1 at Burton Park Wanderers, second placed Ampthill Town overcame Rushden & Higham United 2 0 while third placed Moulton FC edged out London Tigers by the odd goal in three. Joining them with three wins from three are Northampton Sileby Rangers who defeated visiting Lutterworth Athletic 2 1 on Friday night. At the other end of the standings Thame United Reserves and Holmer Green along with the fore mentioned Burton still look for their first points of the new campaign, Thame were beaten 2 4 at home by Rugby Borough while Holmer went down at Eaton Socon, the hosts winning 3 1 to maintain their unbeaten start. Elsewhere Winslow United were the day’s biggest winners as they swept aside hosts Raunds Town 6-0 while Buckingham Athletic secured maximum points thanks to a goal in each half at home against Langford and Northampton ON Chenecks came from behind at the interval to defeat hosts Letchworth Garden City Eagles by the odd goal in seven. The days other fixture between Wellingborough Whitworth and Amersham Town was abandoned with Whitworth 5 3 up. Full results and goalscorers are listed below.

Leighton Town Development are the new table toppers in Division Two following a hard fought solitary goal success against visiting Sarratt, joining them on six points from six are Berkhamsted Raiders and Totternhoe, Raiders won by the odd goal in three at Eynesbury United while the ‘Totts’ came from 0 3 down to win 4 3 at morning leaders Pitstone & Ivinghoe. At the other end of the table bottom club The 61FC (Luton) welcomed the side immediately above them AFC Caddington, with the hosts having conceded eleven goals last week and the visitors eight times one would expect a goal packed game and so it proved with the league’s newbies securing a 4 2 away day success. Elsewhere Milton Keynes College Football Academy overturned a 0 2 interval deficit to win by the odd goal in five at home against Risborough Rangers Development while Codicote suffered a 1-2 defeat at home against New Bradwell St Peter. The day’s other games saw Bovingdon enjoyed a 3 0 success against visiting Potton United Development while Buckingham United went down by a solitary goal at home against Tring Corinthians AFC. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below.

SSMFL Board & Committee member Dave Henman was at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos and pens the following report: This was a good test for AVD as they were playing a team from one step higher in the pyramid system, and it certainly looked that way from the beginning. The classy forward line were proving a handful for the Aylesbury's defence, with very little penetration from the home side. Bristol wasted a golden opportunity when one of their wide forwards blasted over the bar from within the 6 yard box. However they didn't have to wait too long to open the scoring when the referee awarded them a penalty when to me there was very little in it, although the forward made sure he hit the deck dramatically. Owen Howe confidently despatched the spot kick after 17 minutes. There was another penalty shout about 10 minutes later on the far side of the box, and even the home support thought that was more of a penalty than the one given! Gradually though AVD clawed their way into the game, and from a corner a forward's header was saved but captain TERRY GRIFFITHS followed up by belting the ball into the net after 33 minutes. And so it was one apiece at half time. AVD were the quickest out of the blocks and scored a really good goal after 48 minutes when number 3 JAKE BALDWIN continued his run into the box and instead of passing to a forward shot home low and hard into the far corner. The home side were now proving far stronger than their opponents and the icing on the cake arrived in the 59th minute. A magnificent crossfield ball found number 11 PRINCE NIMOH wide on the right hand side. He skipped past one defender, cut inside and with his left foot curled a beauty inside the far post. This was now game over. Manor Farm wilted, and there was no real purpose in their attacks, whilst AVD grew in confidence and were unlucky not to add to the score. In particular one 20 yarder smacked the post and ricochet back just as fiercely! All in all a very deserved and emphatic victory, after a somewhat lethargic beginning.

NORMAN INGRAM

SSMFL Board & Committee member Bill Hamilton was at Southend Manor and pens the following report: A glorious summer’s day on Southend seafront was filled with the screams of youngsters strapped securely into The Axis, a new pendulum style ride that swings, spins and twists its thrill seeking sitters upside down over 100 feet in the air. Half a mile down the road, The Mad Scot, Bill Hamilton, opted for a rather less dramatic offering as Premier League new boys Shefford Town and Campton came face to face with Essex Senior side Southend Manor in a bid to advance their passage in the FA Cup. A hard, difficult surface meant that the ball was in the air here too, for long periods in the first half where chances were few and far between. The best fell to Southend’s striker Haysman who fired over with the goal at his mercy. At the other end, Henry Snee looked to have put the visitors ahead, only to find Mitchell Arthur make a desperate clearance off the goal line. After the interval, the pace of the game increased dramatically as both sides tried much harder to keep the ball on the floor and spread play with some well timed passes. On 55 minutes, Shefford captain, Charlie Milton, jumped high at the far post to head home a Sam King corner. As time ticked on, so Southend pushed forward more menacingly and it was no surprise when Robbie Farrell crashed home a 74th minute equalizer. Both sides strived hard for a winner but it was not to be and so it’s back to the Shefford Sports Club for a Tuesday night replay.

MIDWEEK HEADLINES

Leverstock Green, Shefford Town & Campton and Potton United all progress in the FA Cup. Amersham Town are in seventh heaven after their win over Holmer Green while Moulton FC net five. Burton Park Wanderers gain first point of new campaign.

Leverstock Green recovered from a 0 2 interval score to secure a 2 2 draw with St Panteleimon on Saturday and guess what happened in Wednesday’s replay, yes you guessed correct they found themselves 0 2 down again only this time it was after 88 minutes, cue the fight back and two late goals sent the tie into extra time, Green found themselves ahead for the first time however the hosts hit back and it was then all down to a penalty shoot-out and Green took full advantage to advance into the next round with a 4 2 shoot out win. Penalties also decided the Leighton Town v Barking replay with the visitors winning through 4 3 after a 1 1 draw. Stotfold saw a 2 1 interval lead at Step 4 Grays Athletic slip away the visitors going down by the odd goal in five. Shefford Town & Campton’s debut in the competition continued as they edged out Southend Manor in Bedfordshire in front of a healthy crowd of 349. Finally Potton United progressed in the competition with a 3 1 home success against Soham Town Rangers. Full results and goalscorers are listed below.

THE EMIRATES FA CUP Preliminary Round Replays

Many readers of The Ramblings will have fond memories of a very active former member of the League Management Committee. Sadly, Norman Ingram, who relished his frequent visits to clubs throughout the 3 divisions, is now confined to bed and home in his ground floor flat at Westcliff on Sea in Essex. On behalf of the League, Bill Hamilton paid him a visit at the weekend and was amazed to find the last of the old printed League handbooks sitting prominently on his bedside table. He reads it avidly every day to recall so many happy memories and keeps an active interest in the various fortunes of our clubs. THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF

And Should Be Taken With A Pinch Of Salt

FRIDAY 26th AUGUST/SATURDAY 27th AUGUST/SUNDAY 28th AUGUST

Weekend Stats: The 32 games produced a total of 116 goals, an average of 3.62 per game. Daniel Holman (Northampton ON Chenecks) led the way with a four goal haul while Leon Lobjoit (Leighton Town) and Joshua Langlais (Totternhoe) both netted hat-tricks.

It was the turn of the Isuzu FA Vase to take centre stage this weekend with twenty five SSML sides looking to advance on that Wembley Trail. Friday night saw two former winners of the competition locking horns as Stansted (winners in 1984) welcomed the very first FA Vase winners Hoddesdon Town, alas the visitors became the first SSML casualty of the weekend as the hosts ran out 4 1 winners. Saturday saw another former FA Vase winners enter the fray but again it was no joy for the SSML as Arlesey Town (winners in 1995) were beaten by a solitary goal at former SSML side Milton Keynes Irish (more on this later in the ramblings). Northampton ON Chenecks were the day’s biggest winners as they thumped Buckingham Athletic 7 0 in a tie played in Buckinghamshire due to Chenecks ground being unavailable. Also amongst the goals were Leighton Town who overcame visiting London Tigers 6 1 in an all SSML tie while Aylesbury Vale Dynamos in another all SSML clash enjoyed a 5 1 home success against Rushden & Higham United. Baldock Town overturned a 1 3 half time deficit to edge out visiting Ipswich Wanderers by the odd goal in seven while Biggleswade United defeated Southend Manor at home 3-2 and thus avenged last season’s 0 8 exit at the same stage. Risborough Rangers travelled to former SSML side Flackwell Heath and an even contested game was decided on penalty kicks after a 2 2 draw and Rangers put aside their dismal league form to emerge 5 4 winners from the spot. Letchworth Garden City Eagles were the only other SSML winners on Saturday as they came out on top when winning by a solitary goal at Holland. Those cancelling the open top bus parades are Ardley United (beaten 1 4 at home by North Greenford United) and Potton United who lost by a solitary goal at Romford. It was the lottery of spot kicks that ended the hopes of Leverstock Green and Cockfosters, Green going out 2 4 at Edgware & Kingsbury following a 2 2 draw while ‘Fosters’ also went down 2 4 after a goalless draw at Ilford. Elsewhere on Saturday Lutterworth Athletic went down by the odd goal in three against Melton Town, the tie switched to Melton as work on the new 3G surface at Lutterworth is still uncomplete. Rugby Borough were also beaten 1 2 (at Eccleshall) while London Colney were another side to fall victims to an ex SSML club, the Hertfordshire side going down 1 4 at Harefield United. Saturday’s action was completed with Amersham Town exiting 0 4 at Hilltop. Sunday brought about another four ties with one of the five SSML sides in action progressing, Dunstable Town defeating visiting Crawley Green 2 0. Burton Park Wanderers went down to a solitary goal home defeat by Penn & Tylers Green while Wellingborough Whitworth were beaten 1 3 at FC Deportivo Galicia. The remaining tie produced a cup upset as Step 6 May & Baker Eastbrook Community

WEEKEND HEADLINES

With the FA Vase taking centre stage there were just two Premier Division fixtures, in a very tight game at Shefford Town & Campton it was a late goal that earned the hosts the points against Colney Heath while St Panteleimon edged out visiting Tring Athletic by the odd goal in three in the other fixture. Totternhoe climb to second following their 3 1 home success against Milton Keynes College Football Academy. At the other end of the table bottom club The 61FC (Luton) went down 0 2 at home against Buckingham United, the result earning the visitors their first points of the campaign. Risborough Rangers Development sit second from bottom after a heavy home defeat by New Bradwell St Peter, the visitors winning 6 0. Elsewhere Sarratt were beaten 1 3 at home by Pitstone & Ivinghoe while Eynesbury United suffered a 1 5 defeat at Aston Clinton. PREMIER DIVISION

SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Milton Keynes Irish and pens the following report: Previous FA Vase winners Arlesey Town (season 1994/95) fell at the first hurdle this season by losing 1 0 at MK Irish. This was a game that Arlesey could and perhaps should have won as they were the better team throughout the match. However, a series of missed chances and an Irish goal out of the blue sealed their fate. It all started so well for Town as they dominated the early minutes and drew a smart save from the home keeper and had a goal rightly disallowed for offside. But a swift counter attack by the Irish saw a right wing cross hit home by Oliver Coleman on 31 minutes. It should have been much worse for Town but the home team missed a penalty a few minutes later when their player blazed the ball high over the bar. A more even second half saw much of the same and Town saw another “goal” ruled out for offside again. Not much was seen of the home attack as chances fell to the visitors at regular intervals but without them scoring the important goal. They were unlucky however to see a long range shot hit the Irish post and bounce away to safety. As the game drew to a close Town pushed up in search of a goal and were left vulnerable to the Irish counter attacks and they had to thank their keeper for a couple of late import saves. Not the best game to have witnessed as the ball seemed to spend too much time up in the air but that won’t bother the home team as the luck of the Irish saw them through to the next round.

FA Vase Preliminary Round

Saturday 27th August 2022

The early stages of the game saw Edgware on top, with a number of efforts on goal, but none of them on target. Their first shot on target was from a free kick in the 16th minute, but it was hit straight at Josh Mollison. Leverstock almost had a chance in the 21st minute when Dan Pett threaded a pass through to Chris Blunden, but a defender just got there first. Two minutes later Elgeniy Daalberg made a surging run from his own half before squaring to Pett, whose shot was saved. Daalberg’s game only lasted until the 31st minute, when he was forced off by an injury and replaced by Kai Stonnell.

Edgware & Kingsbury 2 Leverstock Green 2 AET

The first half ended with the game goalless, but then there was a flurry of goals at the start of the second half. In the 48th minute Alvin Kyeremeh got on the end of a corner from Pett to head home and put Leverstock into a 1 0 lead with his third goal of the season. Barely sixty seconds later it was 2 0 as Sean Walsh delivered a cross from the right touchline which was turned home at the far post by Luke Beckwith. The keeper got a hand to Beckwith’s shot, but couldn’t stop it squeezing just inside the post.

After four goals in ten minutes, the game began to quieten down, with both teams starting to look tired after having played 120 minutes in midweek FA Cup replays. The best chance that Leverstock had to win the game was two minutes from the end when Scott McGleish, despite being on the ground, managed to knock a pass through to Blunden, but the keeper pulled off a great save from point-blank range to keep the scores level. With no extra time in the Vase, the game went straight to penalties after 90 minutes. Niko Popov got Edgware off to a good start with the opening kick, but Blunden, having netted his kick on Wednesday, saw his opening kick saved. Edgware’s second kick by Matt Shaw was saved by Mollison, but Leverstock failed to take advantage as Ryan Carruthers, also successful on Wednesday, blasted his kick today over the bar. From then on all the kicks were scored, with Craige Tomkins putting Edgware 2 0 up, Luke Durnin pulling it back to 2 1, Adrian Okoro making it 3 1, McGleish pulling back to 3 2 before Toju James scored the kick that won the shootout for Edgware 4 2. It is a first defeat of the season for Leverstock, who will have a well earned rest during the week and will hopefully get some of their injured players back for next Saturday’s FA Cup glamour tie at Billericay Town. Leverstock Green (0) 2 (Kyemereh 48, Beckwith 49)

1. Josh Mollison, 2. Brad Robinson, 4. Dan Weeks, 18. Luke Durnin, 5. Alvin Kyeremeh, 6. Ryan Carruthers, 7. Elgeniy Daalberg (17. Kai Stonnell 31 mins), 8. Dan Pett, 9. Chris Blunden, 10. Having got their 2 goal lead, though, the Green side switched off somewhat and Edgware fought back strongly. They almost pulled one back in the 52nd minute when a shot from close range hit the bar. Four minutes later they were back in game as Caoilan McGettigan hit a shot from distance which flew in off the post. And in the 58th minute it was back to all square as McGettigan ran through the Green defence and hit a shot which went in off the far post.

Alan Lee Reporting

Fergus Moore, returning to the club which he managed for many years, had further injury problems today with Rio Beach dropping out, and suffered a couple more injuries during the game.

Having come from two goals down and won a dramatic penalty shoot out in the FA Cup on Wednesday night, the boot was on the other foot for Leverstock Green this afternoon as they lost a two goal lead and went on to lose on penalties to exit the FA Vase at the first hurdle.

Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons.

At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter Step Play Offs.

Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Colin Bull, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Roger Stokes

VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB 2022-23

12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.

The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play Off Criteria

Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place.

Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation

This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted.

As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements.
