The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974. In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between amateur and professional footballers, and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving England.
In its first season 220 clubs entered, but they did not include those that had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately allocated to The FA Trophy. For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley.
The first Vase finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Surrey Senior League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a crowd of 9,000. Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its elite clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Midlands Regional League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack.
Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the replay 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals.
The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley had hosted 34 Finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase, donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins.
Aficionados of The Vase competition tend to rate the 1992 Final between Wimborne Town and Guiseley as the best so far. Wessex League Wimborne had a modest record in the competition before then, having never ventured beyond the third round, but they embarked on a spectacular journey that took them all the way from the first round to the Final. A goal down after 14 minutes at Wembley, the Dorset side fought back to win 5-3.
When The Vase Final returned to Wembley, a record 36,232 fans saw Truro City beat AFC Totton 3-1. Whitley Bay, the 2002 winners, achieved a sensational hat-trick of Final victories from 2009 to 2011.
The Northern League’s dominance continued for two more seasons, with success for Dunston UTS and Spennymoor Town before Sholing, then Wessex League champions, got their name engraved. North Shields then came from behind to win the first Final to go to extra time since 2001-02.
In 2015-16 Wembley Stadium staged the first Non-League Finals Day, which saw both the Vase and the Trophy decided back-to-back in front of almost 47,000 fans. Morpeth Town came from behind to stun Hereford 4-1 with 45-year-old Chris Swailes on the scoresheet to win the Vase with a third different club.

KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was we aring one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd).
After two weeks in Tanzania, a flame was lit in Derrick’s heart, and he was on a mission to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed children playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags. Twenty-one years on, KitAid has lots of volunteers and to date we’ve sent out 900,000+ kits to children and adults in 55 different countries across the world.
If you’d like to support the KitAid cause, the easiest way to donate your unwanted football kit, in order for us to find it a new home.
Alternatively, if you don’t have any unwanted kit, but would still like to support us, we’re very grateful for any donations which will help to fund our annual costs as well as support other partnership charities where possible.
We thank you for all your support.
In working in some of the most under-privileged countries around the world, The Football Association is no stranger to seeing the impact the donation of something as simple as a shirt or a pair of shorts can make. KitAid has brought an enormous amount of pleasure and enjoyment to young and old alike through the gift of football kit and has shared the spirit of British clubs and the England team with communities in all corners of the globe. We are proud to be associated with KitAid and wish them all the best in their endeavours for the years to come.

Ampthill Town are one of the oldest clubs in Bedfordshire and date back to the 1880s. They joined the South Midlands in 1951 after playing in the Beds. league and were placed in the Premier Division which they won in 1960 and were runners up a year later.
After finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 1965 the club went to Division 2 of the United Counties League. They were promoted to Division 1 in 1970 despite finishing sixth. In 1991 they returned to the South Midlands and joined Division 1.
After a sequence of ups and downs they stayed in the Senior Division from 2001 to 2011 when they were promoted as runners up. After finishing fifth in2013 they went to the Premier and were runners up in 2014 when they also reached the FA Vase last eight. But the club ended up bottom in the next year and were demoted back to the Division 1.
The club have consolidated in recent years and two years ago they reached the play offs only to lose at home to Whitworths That year they reached the last eight of the Challenge Trophy before losing to Stotfold.
Last year they had a good run in the league but finished just outside the play off places due to number of draws. The Amps won 6-0 at The 61 Fc in the Beds. Senior Trophy before losing to Totternhoe and they lost at Holmer Green in the last four of the Div 1 cup after putting 7 pa st Winslow. British Airways FC sent their Vase hopes sky high with an early Vase exit.
Lee Hawkes stepped aside as manager and has been replaced by Chris Harvey from Totternhoe. He has brought most of his backroom staff and a handful of ex Totts players have made the move although many of last year’s Amps have remained including top scorer Sam Holmes and keeper Ross Taylor. Ampthill Town's best run in the Vase was in 2014 when they reached the last eight but lost at Eastbourne. Before last year's exit British Airways, they went out at home to Norwich CBS 2 years ago.
The Amps finished 6th last year when they dropped points in the final weeks with too many draws which cost them, they opened the term putting six past Thame United reserves and later won 6-3 at Wellingborough Whitworths and scored more goals away than at home. Ampthill began this term with a win at Irchester but have since had three 2-2 home draws.
Leverstock Green FC’s unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt halt on Wednesday night as they were beaten 4-1 at FC Romania in their third SSML Premier Division fixture of the season. It was a deserved win for the home side, who took advantage of a couple of mistakes to hold a three-goal lead at the break, and never looked like relinquishing the game in the second half.
Leverstock Green FC made a good start to the game and went close with just a minute played when Callum Neal headed a free kick back across goal to Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica, whose stabbed shot was deflected wide for a corner. In the 13th minute Luke Beckwith had a run at goal before hitting a shot over the bar.
Two minutes later Leverstock were defending in their own box, and the ball was given away to Malik Nosik, who controlled it before hitting a bullet of a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner of the net, which gave Loris Marcimain no chance.
Leverstock were denied an equaliser in the 28th minute by a great save from home keeper Elgi Fejzo, who dived full-length to his right to turn away a Chris Blunden free kick. On 37 minutes another mistake was punished as the ball was given away near the halfway line and the home side broke quickly. Alie Bangura outpaced Brad Robinson down the left touchline and put over a cross which was finished from close range by Tobi Coker.
Leverstock’s task was made even harder in the last minute of the half when Coker scored his second with another tremendous shot from distance which again left Marcimain standing as it flew into the net.
Things could have got worse in the opening seconds of the second half as FC Romania attacked straight from the kick-off and looked to have a good shout for a penalty, but the referee turned down their appeals. Leverstock pushed forward promisingly a few times during the half, but the home side were still well in control, and Marcimain made a couple of great saves to deny Coker a hat-trick. There was a glimmer of hope for Leverstock Green FC seven minutes from time when substitute Connor McGinty cleared the ball from his own half and found Stefanoaica on the halfway line. Stefanoaica took the ball past Fejzo, who had come way out of his area, and ran on to calmly slot into the empty net to reduce the arrears to 3-1. Stefanoaica went close again in stoppage time with a shot across goal which went just wide. However, the home side’s three-goal lead was restored when Zenon Stylianides was put through to slot past Marcimain for their fourth goal, and it was the last kick of the game as the referee blew for time as soon as the ball hit the net.
Leverstock Green FC will have to pick themselves up quickly as they face a difficult FA Cup tie on Saturday away to Isthmian League North Division side Walthamstow.

Leverstock Green’s run in the Emirates FA Cup ended at the Preliminary Round stage, but they put up a very good display against Isthmian League side Walthamstow in front of an attendance of 415 at Wadham Lodge. It was two mistakes late on which cost Leverstock their chance of progressing further in the competition.
It was Leverstock who had the game’s first chance in the 6th minute as a shot from Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica brought a diving save out of home keeper Matt Nolan. Leverstock had goalkeeper Austin Byfield back in the side after his return from holiday, and Byfield confidently plucked a few crosses out of the air in the early stages. In the 15th minute Walthamstow went close when Carl Mensah got his head to a cross but with not a strong enough touch to divert it into the net.
The home side went in front in the 24th minute. Jared Small beat Mikey Havill-Tierney on the left and got to the bye-line, where he pulled back a cross for big striker Duncan Culley to shoot home the opening goal.
Leverstock kept pushing forward, and in the 34th minute there was a promising moment when Stefanoaica was running at goal with Chris Blunden shouting for a pass, but the pass never came, and the chance was gone. A minute later Blunden had a golden opportunity to equalise when a chipped cross from Havill-Tierney found him all alone in front of goal with only the keeper to beat .Assuming he was offside, Blunden hit his shot straight at the keeper, however the assistant’s flag stayed down, and it was a chance missed.
A minute before half time Byfield pulled off a superb save to tip a shot from George Ironton over the bar, and in stoppage time saved a shot on the run from Damaray Anyadike. Between those efforts Rio Beach had a decent attempt for Leverstock with a shot from distance that went wide. The second half started with Leverstock very much on the front foot, and in the 54th minute they got a deserved equaliser. Luke Beckwith sent over a cross from the left touchline to the far post, where Stefanoaica headed it back across goal, finding Dan Pett to volley home the equaliser from six yards out.
Leverstock lost Stefanoaica to injury in the 67th minute, being replaced by Lewis Collins. It was Collins who had the chance to put Leverstock into the lead in the 74th minute when he was through on goal, but his shot went agonisingly wide. That proved crucial, as within seconds Walthamstow were at the other end. Nolan’s long goal kick was not dealt with by Dan Weeks, and substitute Jordan Watson nipped in to steal the ball and shoot past Byfield for a 2-1 lead.
Leverstock continued to push for an equaliser, and Collins made a great effort to get on the end of a through pass from Pett in the 86th minute, but the defender came out on top. The killer blow followed two minutes later. An attempted clearance from Byfield cannoned off the nearby Watson, and as the ball rebounded back towards goal it was a race as to which of the two would get to it first, and it was Watson who got there to slot the ball into the empty net for his second and Walthamstow’s third goal.
Leverstock continue with cup action next Saturday when they host Ampthill Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase.
