Welcome to Love Bug Month! Yes, May is when those little, nasty, flying, sex machines smash into your face, onto your windshield and into your mouth .... Ugggh! Early in the morning, high noon, late in the afternoon, even at night, Love Bugs are here ... there ... everywhere! The good news is they don’t last long and by June they will be long gone. Spring is an ultra-busy time here in the Sunshine State with numerous motorcycle events and poker runs. Here at Full Throttle we are excited to be involved with what could be the biggest event we do all year. For the first time in city history, Oldsmar is shutting down State Street and the entire area will be wet zoned and serving ice cold Budweiser beer. There will be two stages featuring the top bands in Central Florida, three bike shows, rider’s training shows, stunt shows, a car show, multiple vendors and tons of fun! It will be a three day event and takes place on Memorial Day Weekend May 22-24. We will have a Memorial Day Parade on Saturday and a military tribute Sunday morning. We will be making donations to the Sentinels of Freedom. For additional information, please see the ad inside this issue. This is one event you will not want to miss! We will also be hosting our annual Five Bridge Run this month and if you have never been a part of this, you are missing one fantastic motorcycle ride! We actually go over all five bridges that connect Pinellas, Hillsborough and Manatee Counties. The first 150 riders receive a patch and all riders get a certificate of completion. The run takes place on May 30 and starts at Lenoce’s Restaurant in Oldsmar. I have multiple birthday wishes to give out this month starting with my little sis Debi who celebrates on May 1, Full Throttle editor Tony Cianci will be 29 years old on May 4, my daughter-in-law Christine turns another year older on May 6, Ricki celebrates on May 10, my good friend Georgie catches up to me on May 29 and Nadean Knipe has a birthday on May 30 .... damn, that’s a lot of presents to buy! Please ride responsibily and have a great month. I sincerely hope you make plans to join us Memorial Day weekend for Oldsmar Freedom Fest .... it will be one hell of a good time!

It’s almost that time again….To Go For a REAL Ride! That’s right…The Sore Ass Run is right around the corner, June 13th. Last year we went to Panama City Beach and we had over 150 bikes on the run! This year we are going to Daytona Beach with a nice route through the state of Florida. Here are the cities we will be stopping in….Port Richey, Homosassa, Ocala, Gainesville, Starke, St. Augustine and ending in Daytona at the Grand Seas Resort. They have given us some great prices on rooms this year so call today and make your plans for one of the best rides in Florida. Look at the page to the right for more info for hotel rooms. On May 30th we are having our 5 Bridge Poker Run! This goes over the 5 major bridges that connect the Tampa Bay Area. The Courtney Campbell Causeway, The Bay Side, Howard Franklin, The Gandy and the big momma, the Skyway Bridge! We will be ending at Wing House in Bradenton. We would like to thank Wing House for letting us end our stop there as we have not done any events together for a long time! Thanks Aaron. See page 6 for more information on this run. There are some great events happening in May, so try and make as many as you can. May 9th, Bubba the Love Sponge is having a poker run to help some Police who have either been killed or injured on the job. May 16th is the Bud Run, May 17th is the Quaker Steak and Lube Mega Bash and the Full Throttle 151 party…there will be 151 drink specials and Full Throttle is celebrating our 151st issue printed. Of course you saw the cover about the Oldsmar Freedom Fest on May 22nd through the 24th. This is a huge event where the street is only opened to bikes and pedestrians and they will be tons to do. See the ad on pages 24 and 25 in this issue. Full Throttle is looking for banner exchanges on our website. Click on the Motorcycle Links button at the top of our home page and send us a banner and your website. We will send one back! Let’s all help each other out in this crappy economy. Also we have special ad rates for new advertisers. If you are thinking of advertising in FT, call us and we will take care of you and make sure your ad looks great. May is motorcycle awareness month so make sure you do your part and when you are riding in your cage and you are looking out for the riders. We would also like let Taz know we are thinking about him, get well soon. Happy birthdays to my Aunt Debi, Sister-in-law Christine and a special Happy Mothers Day to the mother of my children and the most beautiful wife and Administrative Assistant in the World, Kandi. AndHappy Mothers Day to my Mom, Mary, in Toledo, Ohio. Be safe, be smart, don’t drink and ride and I will see you soon.

For decades criminal defense lawyers throughout our country have argued that once a defendant is arrested and put in a police cruiser, the need for cops to search the defendant’s vehicle for “officer safety” reasons is non-existent. Finally, our highest court of our land, the Supreme Court of the United States agrees with us. In the newest landmark case of Arizona v. Gant, the Supreme Court voted by the slightest margin of 5-4 to hold that Arizona police officers violated a defendant's Fourth Amendment rights by searching his car for narcotics after he was arrested for driving on a suspended license. The Court wrote that Police may search the passenger compartment of a vehicle incident to a recent occupant's arrest only if it is reasonable to believe that the arrested person might have access to the vehicle at the time of the search or that vehicle contains evidence of the offense for which the person was arrested. In the Gant case, the Court distinguished the case of New York v. Belton on the ground that in this case the scene had been secured by law enforcement but in the Belton case it had not. This new ruling by the Court found that the search of the car incident to arrest was not justified by an interest in officer

safety or in the interest of preserving evidence concerning the offense for which the occupant was under arrest. For years cops would take the stand and claim that they searched a vehicle incident to arrest for officer safety reasons. They would testify to this even though a defendant was handcuffed and secured in a police cruiser (Hmmm, let’s see, he is in handcuffs and locked in a cruiser, yet they feared for officer safety he might somehow get out and get a gun or knife that might be hidden in the car?). Criminal defense attorneys, state prosecutors, and the Judges all knew what the law said and that this was the cops’ way of getting evidence without securing a search warrant. Hopefully this new case will keep the few corrupt cops out there honest, but I doubt it. One last note: Many thanks to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for harassing all those bikers a couple of weeks ago that were headed to a local Motorcycle Club’s event. You know who you are and so do I. The train is coming. Ride Smart, Be Educated, and Trust No One (Except Me), Jerry T.

THE LOST ART OF THE KICKSTART (or how the easy button ruined America)

I was having to do some long division just today, and it seems the dilithium crystals in my calculator had made their last voyage, and it occurred to me that I possess a few obsolete skills no longer needed in our “easy world”. I found I could still do long division, I can still write cursive (although it does look a bit like hieroglyphics) and as I sat in my bike barn on this cold April day, I looked at 5 of my motorcycles that had kickstarts and it occurred to me that very few of us possess this skill, or these machines.

its a throwback to the Iron Age. It taught you patience and technique and it connected you directly to the piston that was going to take you on your journey. Now you are isolated by wires, solenoids and starter motors from that connection.Speaking of connections when they all go bad you will wish that they held on to the kickstarter ! But then who has ever heard of hyper-extending your thumb while starting!

The very art of kickstarting a motorbike brings a oneness to you the rider and it the machine. You dial in the ticklers on the carbs, set the ignition advance /retard, find out how many throttle twists your beast likes, given the day of the month and the alignment of the planets ( sometimes a well placed Tibetan monk chant also helps) and on a couple of my bikes is a compression release lever as a helper and then when the gods of “past top dead center” are amused and the goddess of hyperextension does not need a sacrificial knee or calf, it all comes together ! Science, magic and the here and now explode in a harmony of exhaust tones ! Thats unless one small thing was amiss, your calculations and tinkering just a wee bit off and an that occasion the goddess of hyperextension may call. This being the condition when your kickstarter fails to engage the cog and you kick through open airspace with no resistance, your leg becomes extended about 2 inches past its pre-engineered length......hence the name hyper-extended.

I think maybe the “easy button” and a lack of wanting to learn a true trade, to learn techniques and patience, instead of the need ofinstant gratification . Well that may have gotten US in the economic fix we are in. But that is another story.

Then there’s the opposing force of evil at work on the mechanics of kickstarting known as the “explosive kickback syndrome” a little to much gas, that extra 2 tickles, a few to many “throttle twists” and the wrong choke and the resultant opposing force-backfire explosion has been known to hurl a rider (well is he really a “rider at this point?) many yards away. The British still find skeletons of wayward kickers 10 sometimes 20 feet up in the trees, many times mistaken for lost parachuters from the war, but then find a rusting Triumph or a Norton near with its kicker deployed. NASA has also recently released a top secret paper identifying many pieces of space junk as decades of Harley riders hurled there by errant starting procedures . Often the term rider and kickstarting do not go together. I have often been limping rather than riding. I have 2 bikes that have the kickstart almost as a holdout. My 1974 Yamaha 650 was built around the beginning of the end, when motorcycle engineers must have come to grips with the “easy button”. Cost, weight and its complexity and most of all a public that wanted quick, easy painless starts. This was the end of the ever reliable kickstarter .I do belive the “easy button” started at the sales level of the big manufacturers. It must have sounded something like this “hey Gunther what if ze motorbiken easian to starten? to which Mr. Suzuki replied “we have moe rider not in hospital, more ridey” to which Mr. Smith said “brillant’ we will have many more riders, young, old and of all sizes. Thus at this imaginary sales meeting I think the fate of the kickstarter was sealed. But when it comes to starting an ornery, obstinate, cranky, kickstart bike, that everyone in the lot has lost their leg to , or had a stroke on......trust me......go find a British guy, they seem to have the knack, but I guess that comes from starting Triumphs, Nortons or BSA’s in a rainy, foggy country that never quite mastered motorbike electrics.

Entry-Low Range 1978 -1981 Kawasaki KZ 650 SR price then (1978) $2395 price now $1000 - 2000

It’s odd in an almost masochistic way. Now I actually look for bikes now with this ancient appendage hanging out of its case, its a point of sale now. There’s something to starting a bike with your foot, rather than a press of a button, almost like a CPR where you start the beast breathing with a bodily force. I have a few low dollar bikes, a few higher dollar bikes and I have never found any relationship between what they cost me and the fun (or pain) they have given me.......except for one thing. The ones that kick to life, they do seem to offer more pleasure and more personality, and I do think some of us should still know how to write cursive, do some long division on paper and kickstart a motorbike. The kickstarter connects you to the beginnings of motorcycling ,

SUPERBIKE UPDATE Only the race held in Valencia can make this issue. With team BMW barely cracking the top 15 in race one and two. The big news is Ducati taking 1/2/4 in race one and 1/3/4 in race two. With team Xerox (Ducati 1098) rider Noriyuki Haga placing first in both races and setting a track record in race number one. He now maintains a 40 point lead in the championship after 3 rounds. Hagas known as a “win it or bin it” rider had a “win it” performance at Valencia. Next stop 4/26 Assen, Netherlands and 5/10 Monza, Italy.

OLDSMAR DAYS BIKE SHOW And Oldsmar DaYs Parade Oldsmar Days was a great event that happened at R.E. Olds Park in Oldsmar, Fl. There was a bike night on Friday Night sponsored by Attorney Nick Athanason and judged by Rev. Jim. Congrats to Mr. 300 who won Best in Show with his antique BMW. On Saturday there was a huge parade where FT brought out our Firetruck packed with kids throwing beads and candy. Thanks to Rita and the Chamber for involving Full Throttle in this yearly event!

Run For The Big Dogs

The Run For the Big Dogs had a ton of vendors and a nice turn out. This was a poker run that helps the Greyhound Pets of America and adoptions of Greyhounds. The Pride Riders won the coveted most members plaque and the best hand in the poker run gave all the money back. Val and Don do such a great job at this every year. There was also a poker walk around the vendors. Besides the fact that there were over 30 packed baskets in the auction! I have never seen such great prize baskets. Hey Bill, Enjoy your prize!

Brandon H-D Bike Night Brandon H-D has a great thing going and it is only going to get bigger and better. Starting this month you can enter for free to win a H-D Crossbones thanks to MacKay and Souders the second Thursday of the month at Brandon Bike Night or the last Tuesday of the month at the new Tampa H-D Bike Night! CRUISE FOR KIDS Cruise For Kids started with a rainy and miserable day....but it got better....a whole lot better! The sun came out at 12noon and everyone started flocking to the Lube as there was a bike give-a-way, Bud Girls, and of course the GREG BILLINGS BAND!!!!! These guys are the best band in the Bay area! They rocked out for 2 hours and even donated some of their proceeds back to the cause from merchandise sales. I believe almost all the winners gave the money back as well, if not most of it! This was a unique event as you could stop at any Federal Credit Union and get a card and end at the Lube. Full Throttle was glad to help be a part of such a great cause and a wondeful charity. We look foward to helping again next year!

RED KNIGHTS (WORLD’S LARGEST POKER RUN) FOR FFSF On April 18th, 40 different Red Knights Chapters in 12 states, simultaneously commenced their Poker Runs, not only to achieve a world record attempt, but to raise money for the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundation. And guess what, the RED KNIGHTS are GUINNESS WORLD BOOK record holders. At deadline time on the 18th, 20 venue locations from 9 states reported a total of 2,090 Motorcycles. This number does not reflect the total number of participants at the event. Our local Chapter 14 held a great ride, starting at Station #33 for registration, then moving out to St. Pete Powersports where coffee, juice, bagels and donuts were served, then heading north to Grass Flats and Hennessey’s, and south again to Tom Foolery, American Legion Post #252 where an all day – all you can eat BBQ for $4.00 was served, and ending at Beer, Bikes & Babes for the final fun to what had been a beautiful sunny day and great ride. There was live music, vendors, raffles, and fantastic door prizes. The winning hand received $500.00. But most importantly of all, substantial money was raised for the FALLEN FIREFIGHTER SURVIVORS FOUNDATION, a great cause. These men and women are my heros, so I will always be ready to Rock and Ride with the Red Knights. Be Safe, Sandy

Full Throttle 40 Biff Burgers- Historical Landmark in St. Petersburg Florida It all started in May of 1982, for George, Sandy and Troy Musser. Their dream was to resurrect a nostalgic burger joint popular in the 50’s, it was a financial risk that George and Sandy believed in and was determined to make happen. Thru financial ups and downs George and Sandy invested their life’s savings and reinvested their profits back in the Burger joint. On May 17 1984, they held their first Hot Rod car night and it was a smash hit, 25 years later it is still going strong. On March 21, 1997 they started their first Bike Night recently celebrating their 12 anniversary. The rest is history. I wanted to share this Piece of History to all my Biker Brothers and sisters who are loyal patrons and friends of George, Sandy and Troy and the hard working staff that keeps the legend living. I had no idea of the History behind the Biff Burgers until I started opening a few websites that were at my fingertips. The Biff-Burger story started in the mid-1950’s it was a growing chain of drive-up burger stands that stretched from Florida to Toronto, Canada. Bruce and Earl Brane, were the original owners of the Biff-Burger Company and opened their first restaurant in Clearwater, Florida in 1956. The Brane brothers designed and built the broilers at their manufacturing warehouse, located at 9470 Ulmerton Road in the nearby town of Largo. This location also acted as the corporate address for the BiffBurger Company, later renamed to the National Biff-Burger System, Inc. Bruce acted as the president of the Biff-Burger company and ran the day-to-day business in addition to creating the menu and special sauce that all of us former customers remember so well. Biff stands for “Best in Fast Food” and became well known name across the southeast of the United States. This roto-broiled, as stated on many of the original Biff-Burger signs, was Biff-Burger’s signature to fame as a 100% beef burger was placed on a rotisserie rack between two heating elements. After a few minutes, the cooked burgers came out the other side of the covered broiler and were ready for dip-

By: Historian C. Catherman ping into the special sauce. The Clearwater-Largo, Florida based company sold hundreds of franchisees across the country. The original restaurants were portable metal facilities that featured ‘walk-up’ or ‘drive-in’ service while table seating was provided outdoors. It has been reasonably concluded that the Biff-Burger chain and its corporate umbrella of the National Biff-Burger System went completely out of business in 1976, based on credible information. Various documented sources indicate that Mary Carter Paint Company, that owned the National Biff-Burger System, Inc. in 1962, and supported the individual Biff-Burger Drive-in locations, had some financial difficulties during the 1960s as they sought out other business ventures. This started the “spiraling” collapse of this former legendary burger drive-in, which once stretched from Florida to Toronto, Canada. As this wasn’t enough damage, Burger King at the time was also growing and becoming a more dominant player in the fast food hamburger industry. Despite the fierce competition in the end, all of the former Biff-Burger locations disappeared into history except for Two Locations Remain! The location at 1040 West Lee Street in Greensboro, NC continues on, as Beef Burger, re-named during the 1980’s but is still referred to as Biff-Burger by the local community. The other is own located at 3939 49th Street N. in St. Petersburg, Florida. The St. Petersburg location is the ONLY Biff-Burger location still left in existence, which uses the Biff-Burger name and is of the original “Port-A-Unit” building construction with upswept canopy roofs. This location also has many elements of the “classic” Biff-Burger architecture and features the original road sign with lighted “star” ball! It’s my belief that if you ride a bike you are profiled. I never had much experience with doctors or drug stores but after asbestos in my lungs and taking breathing meds and heart surgery, I have had lots of experiences with old age insurance doctors send a bill to the government and get paid. Recently I wound up in the hospital after dizzy spells passing out they kept me for a week so I called my pill pusher that kept me coming every three months for the past three years and asked the nurse if he would call me. After not hearing, I tried the next day and later that afternoon, a lady in his office called. Her title was MSN, ARNP, BC she asked me what was the matter I told her I have been in the hospital and I wanted to talk to my doctor, period. As I would not tell her what it was about she told me if I wanted a consultation with the doctor I would have to make an appointment and hung up. A slow burn, I guess he would not get paid for phone talk thinking how much money he got paid for a nurse to take my temperature and blood pressure and ask what I was there for and I told her it was because he told me to! He would finally come in, we would talk, get more prescriptions and told me to come back in 3 months. When the drugs ran out he would charge the government more! But he could not give me 3 minutes on the phone when I was in the hospital out of town. I guess he would not get paid for that. His office called back to make appointment but I cussed them out till they quit calling and found a new doctor that would call me back if I needed him. I will tell you about my experiences with drug stores next month. If you look like me and ride a bike I guess they think we are all stupid! Maybe we are!

The Bare Buns Bikers held a weekend of fun at the Caliente Resort in Land O Lakes Florida this past month and I was in attendance. It was nice to see old friends and meet new ones! My friend Squeezer got his bike (calls it Francine) back on the road. I guess it is old school by today’s standards Oh yeah, the doctors office called me back again said the doc would like to see me, it has been 9 months now. I guess he gets paid to see me but not for a phone call or maybe does not want to hear what I want to say about his (MSN, ARNP, BC) The cutest elf....See you soon.

The Editor, Tony C (Chief Cupcake), Bob Demoss and Nighttrain headed out on a beautiful Friday afternoon to test ride the new Indian Motorcycles at St. Pete Powersports. Wes Harris was a great host and showed us around the Dealership and introduced us to the many people including the reps from Indian who were there with the Semi. We had a great ride down to the St. Pete Pier and took some nice pictures of all the new Indians lined up with the Pier in the background. I really like what Indian has done with the bike. There is plenty of power with the 1725 cc motor. Baker Drivetrain even made a specific unit for the new Indians. I am no person to tell you specifics about bikes, what they can and can’t do and all that jazz. What I can tell you is that these bikes don’t just look cool, they are great to ride and there is a lot of power coming out of that engine. I enjoyed the nice, almost for fitting, seats and the look of a black Indian Chief with the tan bags, tan seat and the fringe almost makes me think I am looking and an antique motorcycle rather than a new one. I am really looking forward to what Indian has in store for the future. If it is anything like what they have just produced, you will be pleasantly surprised. Congrats Indian on bringing back a great machine. If you are interested in purchasing a new Indian stop by St. Pete Powersports 555 34th St. S. IN THE CITY THE BUELL 1125 R AN AMERICAN TRILOGY

This article starts with a phone call from a fellow writer at Full Throttle. Sandy Golobish called me and said ,”I am looking for a Steve McQueen test pilot to review Fletchers new Buell 1125R”, and I thought hey I’m just like Steve McQueen, I’ll do it. You see my interest in bikes lies with history, uniqueness and engineering and my interest in this test ride started with Mr. Eric Buell. This is a 25th anniversary bike for him, his first departure from a Harley Davidson power plant and a statement based on the Buell trilogy, Chassis rigidity, mass centralization and unsprung weight. Eric Buell shows that a bike can be designed for spirited common man use and still be a hit on a track day. This is the way a street bike should be designed, not a bike engineered for championships then stick a tag holder and a kickstand on it. Although the 1125R has an Austrian power plant(the Rotax--helicon 72 degree vee twin) and Japanese forks (Showa). It is American framed, engineered and built at Buell Motorcycle in East Troy, Wis. This story is a trilogy much like Eric Buells philosophy, a story of why I took this review , a story of a dealership and the story of the Buell 1125R. I usually don’t like motorcycle reviews , they all take place in a mythical land of twisties that lie within miles of some epic racetrack the tester has full use of. I motorcycle in the real world. 90 percent of my riding time is in the real world. Then the reviews are filled with stats, weights, graphs and photos found at the factory website and a gazillion other internet sites, so I thought lets do a quirky, odd, different review, kind of like the bike I was given..............the Buell 1125R. While I’d like to tell you of my canyon carving exploits and top speed records, I can’t. Tommy at Fletchers did say “take the bike as long as you want” But I didn’t think he meant to Deals Gap ! I did ride over to the St. Pete. Grand Prix track, I tried to explain my predicament to the fellow at the gate but he mumbled something about liabilities and cars, little did he know my 1125R was probably faster than the IRL Grand Prix cars he was guarding. Its not that one handed stoppies and 4 gear wheelies don’t impress me, its a testament to what abuse the bike will take and Its riders skills. But in my real world of bike riding in and around Tampa and some possible trips to Daytona or the Blue Ridge Mts. the above trickery doesn’t concern me. The racing attributes and stunt riding of this bike are well documented on the internet. All the specs. you want, race results and “youtube” videos so I do not need to expand on this. No this is a review of how I a normal skill, 47 year old, 190 lbs, 5’10” tall rider would use this amazing machine in the real world, in the City of Tampa. Well, as Billy rolled the bike out, three thoughts went through my head. (One) Wow, they are giving me a 146 hp (plus 5 with ram air) Vee twin full of gas for free. (Two) This bike wins races, does wheelies and tops out at 172 mph. (Three) don’t wad up Fletchers 1125R or get it confiscated by Johnny Law. This leads me to number ( four) which was my plan all along. Its race and speed was tested properly at tracks. How does Eric Buells creation live in Tampa on a hot windy day. On a real day it starts at the dealership, the gang at Fletchers was super! Tommy, JT, Tony, Dick and Nate. Thanks for a great test flight, and setting the bike up for me. It was a super pleasant experience! Got anything else for me too test? So off from Fletchers on US 19 up to the Courtney Campbell Causeway, nice road and a 20mph wind blowing from the side. This bike is amazingly stable with that much wind. Drats, stuck at a light, but sitting still with these wind gusts the bike never moved. Up over the bridge 60-70 mph alternating between 2nd/3rd/4th/ gear. The Buell seems to like 5000-7000 rpm range where its flat torque line lies (and I mean flat) but in 4th in the low 3000 range it would still pull hard and with solid acceleration. So far, so cool! Now up to the Veterans Expressway up to the toll booth and onto that flat stright run up to state road 54, I think the name expressway

and red line sound fun! Yeah I know “in the city”.........”real life”. Hey, gotta get this part out of my system. Drop the 1125R into 1st at 35 mph, off to 10K!Shift to 2nd. off to 10K at about 90 now, clutchless shift to 3rd. go to the red line 10,500 and 115, mission accomplished, ease back down to 70 mph. Wow, that went by quick! The 6 speed transmission on the Buell rivals anything built smooth, forgiving, crisp, great at clutchless shifting and a easy to locate neutral. The vacuum assist slipper clutch is AMAZING. I tried to get it to disappoint me but it never, ever did. Well then, around and back towards Tampa this time sticking to my mission of normal highway driving(for the sane) Lets see how 60 feels in a completely wrong gear? and 6th is my favorite number! The same stretch of road that had me doing 90 in second had me bogging along at 60 in 6th. A Mustang GT comes by in the fast lane. Lets get him! no I didn’t. drop down 3 gears and go, I twisted the throttle in 6th and off I went and in a matter of seconds, catching and passing the Mustang. Lets get off at the airport exit and go see if we can get stuck in some traffic! thats real life huh? The Buell engine temperature on the highway at speed was running 170-190 degrees in the stop and go of Dale Mabry it was up around 206. That was as high as it got during my ride. Well lets take a left head down Kennedy, Yeah !stop and go traffic. The bike is easy to walk while slipping the clutch in 1st. Now to the heat, its hot in the city, the 20 mph wind is gone, you may read in many internet revues about the heat emanating from the twin side mounted radiators while noticable in traffic, no issue at speed but my Italian bike sheds just as much at me. Okay, moving again, Hey, a cute little brick road, how real world is that? 1st gear, 20mph, the suspension loved it, so did I.....Hang a right onto Davis Island. Nice little climbs and turns, 2nd gear all the way out to the yacht club. I am a member so my first stop was for photos. I put into the commodores spot! Seems like a good fit, no lets move over by the palm tree, no over by the race boats! Four hot starts after 1 hour of riding, it never stuttered and those Buell cooling fans remind me the 1125R isn’t frying itself. Well back off the island lets keep the Buell in 3rd at 2500 still pulling through the twists and turns very well, even though it did ‘t like my gear choice! I now know what to do, take the 1125R to the boulevard of broken dreams (and bikes). Hello, Bayshore Blvd.........bump, bump, bumpity, doing about 45, a few turns, a few jogs, suspension great! Seat vs buttocks great! Well lets drop it into 1st from 2nd at 45. Darn, no lock up, no hop........hmmm pick up speed. I go by one of those automated speed signs. It said “your speed is 58 mph”. I look at the digital speedometer and smiled “why yes it is”. The analog tach, digital speedometer and engine temperature is very readable at all times although the air temp. seems to read high at times. the small idiot warning lights (turn signals/neutral / high beam ) can be very tough to read in the sunlight. I think tinting the lower part of the wind screen would help. Hey, a sandy, sharp turn onto Fair Oaks, drop down to 1st, dump the clutch, nope, no slide, lockup or hop. Lets putt around the back roads in 2nd at 2500, nice zip code man. Well, off to Gandy ,holy cow batman its still blowing 20mph! lots of fast traffic. lets go 88mph in 2nd. all

the way over the bridge. Wow, but you know what I’ve been missing how well the fairing has protected me from the constant buffeting . It’s an engineering marvel. Ya all know how you feel after being in the wind all day after a ride.............Not on the 1125 my friends. The riding position on the 1125R is somewhere between sport and sport touring, it puts you into a semi aggressive position, not upright, not fetal. I found it very pleasant in 150 miles of city riding and could see 400 plus mile days on the 1125R. Lets pull into Kahunas for a coke, a few pictures. Jim the owner came out and immediatly noticed the fit and finish. A few patrons came out and said, “hot bike”...........I said “no,its liquid cooled”! “I crack myself up sometimes”. Well, I found a part of the bike I like the most in a sport bike for the real world. The kickstand, at no time , hot lot, sand, incline or a cute girl sitting on it. Man, It’s sturdy and light and looks great. My two sport bikes have what amounts to a straw with a spring attached. It’s like when i gingerly get off I have to will them to remain upright. Eric Buell, kickstand genius..... Well lets take a run over to Grass Flats, see whats going on, It was while taking photos of the 1125R. I realized my test run was nearing its end that had begun 4 hours ago. I had just got this bike figured out. If Buell builds a bike from the rider down he sure did build a lot of room into it to make a moderate ability rider like me have so much fun. Fletchers closes in an hour, but one more stop.............my final real world test. So, I am single and free, lets see how this all arounder does with the hot chicks. I stopped at a friends dance club, 24 K in Clearwater. I had two models come out . The beautiful Ashley and lovely Kimber. After some photos I had to let Ashley in the back door. (hey, stay focused on the bike.) I said “whats the password” she replied “hot bike”. Thats when I knew that the 1125R was all things to all people. This bike does everything well, guys on hot sport bikes liked it, the cruiser crowd liked it and hot chicks liked it. The bike is $11,995 with less maintenance cost then the imports and Its built in the U.S.A. Whats not to like??? This bike will take 20 or 30 years off of some peoples ages. But the bike retains its wisdom and control to keep both young and old fools out of trouble. While our minds are saying “go speed racer go” there’s a “trixie” chip in this bikes computer controlled brain saving our butt, making us look good, wrong gear I’ll help you out, too much brake I’ll get you through it. Go ahead grab a lot of throttle I don’t want to scare you and you don’t need an AMA card unless you want to get us one and the Buell 1125R will take you there too. Even though my mindset is in the city in real life this bike keeps taking you to extreme thoughts, I like that, even stuck in traffic you know deep down what both of you are thinking! Let’s make like Steve McQueen and get to freedom. A bike for all reasons

The Pink Dragon Ladies, Florida’s first cancer survivor dragon boat team, is a group of strong women! This is how I had the pleasure of meeting Verna Nasrallah, whom I have grown to love dearly! Verna and her husband ride and support every biker event they can!! They needed to raise funds for their awesome cause, and asked that I help with placing their ad in Full Throttle. It was my pleasure. These ladies have been supporters of bikers one way or another, and I am proud to say the biker community has become very supportive to them! Last year was their first Pink Dragon Ladies Poker Run, which raised about $5000, and this year’s 2nd annual PDL Run on April 4, raised about $8700. Last year I had the pleasure meeting Carol Lee Banks, who was their Fundraising/Public Relations chairwoman who was a lady full of life and spirit and a major contributor in the planning of last year’s event along with Verna. Sadly Carol Lee lost her battle to cancer a few months back. She will be truly missed! The 6th annual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races are hitting the waters of Garrison Channel on May 2nd, 2009! 70 teams from local corporate and community groups as well as paddlers from across the U.S. and Canada will be vying to be Tampa's #1 Dragon Boat Team. Come out and enjoy the races, show your support and enjoy the cultural activities on land! There will be flower ceremony to memorialize those who've lost their battles to breast cancer and it will be held at noon. It would be awesome to show up with a bunch of bikers adorned in PINK!!! I know they would love to see us there, as they wanted me to invite anyone I knew. It will be a celebration!! Please SPREAD THE WORD!! We can all meet at Rick's on the River, at 11:15am, since it is downtown, just in time to roll in by around 11:40! Just in time to mingle before the ceremony!! The Pink Dragon Ladies dragon boat team was formed in November 2004 and incorporated under the name Team Survivor Tampa Bay as a 501 (c) 3, not-for-profit, corporation a year later. The team provides “sport and support for women with cancer,” and welcomes women living with any type of cancer to participate in dragon boat racing, sprint triathlons and other physical activities sponsored by the team. Please come show your support! Hop on your scooters and wear something Pink!! PDL Photos courtesy of Larry K. Article By Marilyn Menendez

Upclose & Personal William (Bill) J. Davidson By Night Train

Harley-Davidson Archives - Copyright H-D

As some of you may be familiar with my column, I aim to provide an “up close and personal” of my interviewees rather than giving the usual info motorcycle trade magazines will i.e. gear ratios, clutch adjustments and all. Having said that, I offer you Bill J. Davidson. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s cover some important preliminary ground. William (Bill) J. Davidson is Vice President of Core Marketing at Harley Davidson. Bill was born in 1961 in Milwaukee, WI. He is great grandson of William A. Davidson, grandson of William H. Davidson and son of William (Willie) G. Davidson. When Bill is asked to speak about his daughter “Cara” you can see Bill’s eyes immediately disengaging from the conversation, zoning out and deep in thoughts. You can sense the sentiment of fatherhood literally seizing the man’s soul. When he speaks of her, you can tell the very breath with which he speaks of her reveals that he speaks from the depth of his heart with affection only loving fathers can truly understand. My guess is that family comes first in Bill’s life. It was Bike Week 2009 in Daytona when I met with Bill. Everyone knows Harley-Davidson pretty much owns Daytona during that week. Our exclusive meeting was scheduled at the Ocean Center. You can feel the vibe in the air when you are in close vicinity of any of the Davidson family members. Everyone wants a piece of the action and

get close to them. Even while I was obviously meeting with Bill, some other journalists of several different organizations interrupted our meeting hoping to have an opportunity such as the one Bill so kindly granted to me. Willie G. even showed-up and exchanged a few casual words of laughter with all of us. Bill has fond childhood memories. Bill remembers running to the window at the end of the day waiting for his dad. His dad could not even come close to parking the bike before young Bill would claim a rightfully entitled ride in the side car. All three children, Bill, Karen and Michael were taken to a park outside of Milwaukee by their parents one day. All three had the opportunity to learn to ride in one day. Bill was six years old and admits it was a total thrill to take the handle bars of the customized three speeds Harley Davidson M50 he and his siblings learned on. Bill believes everyone goes through “a sense of freedom” the first time they ride and this sense of freedom becomes “embedded in them.” Bill eventually started racing amateur level in the late

70’s on motocross circuits. His bike was a heavily modified Harley-Davidson MX250 with a tricked out swing-arm and suspension. Bill continued to describe his bike with a big grin on his face proudly stating his bike had the most advanced technology at the time. Bill no longer races but still loves to get out there and ride dirt bikes, as well as street bikes. Being diabetic, the fight against diabetes is part of Bill’s philanthropic activities. In fact it’s one of the first causes he supported. At age ten, Bill took it upon himself to solicit funds for the American Diabetic Association (ADA) (http://www. diabetes.org/) in the context of a bike-a-thon. He went as far as writing letters to ask for support. One of the letters was to none other than Evel Knievel. Evel responded to Bill by sending a best wishes letter accompanied by a $1,000.00 check. Bill now sits on the local Wisconsin Board of the ADA. As a corporation, Harley-Davidson has chosen to work with

Muscular Dystrophy Association (www.mda.org) and Bill attends many of these fundraising events as well. Bill considers himself a very fortunate person – and part of this good fortune was being born into the Davidson family.

He states that his family stays very close and has enjoyed many Harley-Davidson experiences of the open road together. It almost goes without saying that they are passionate about their motorcycling and take every chance they get to enjoy riding. At work, he, Karen and Willie G. have a strong focus on the “product” during their conversations. He sits with Willie G. on the “Product Planning Committee” with Willie G. being responsible for styling and Bill for core marketing and racing. Besides manufacturing and engineering being involved, all parties including Karen strongly focus on one critical aspect among others: the customer. In fact the majority of the day prior to our meeting, Bill, Willie G., and Karen went around town looking, observing and mentally

noting new trends or other items which would help them better meet the customer’s needs. Having heard that I made sure to mention to Bill how much I loved my FXSTBI Night Train®. I was in heaven when I picked-it up from Virginia and rode it 850 miles home in one single day on the original Badlander seat. Bill said I should be given an award for that (I will be waiting for it!). I don’t believe anyone will be surprised to read that Bill has ridden all over the globe. To pick a favorite would simply be impossible but the rides that most “shine” in his memory are the 95th, the 100th and the 105th H-D Anniversary rides. Bill speaks of these journeys as “a blast.” “Seeing the USA from the seat of a Harley is spectacular” says Bill. Speaking of Anniversaries, Bill admits having shed a tear during the 105th event. An overwhelming feeling of pride came upon him as he was riding in the parade with thousands of fellow HarleyDavidson owners. The emotion of carrying on the great iconic Harley-Davidson brand is powerful. The feeling of paying tribute to those customers and dealers who have helped get Harley-Davidson through 105 years was “amazing.” To the question of whether Bill feels under pressure to carry on with the torch, Bill

provided me with the words of a leader in the making: “I don’t feel pressure. I feel excitement.” Bill is

excited and thrilled for the future. Bill believes that the efforts of all the dedicated Harley-Davidson employees and dealers will take the corporation to “greater heights.” Bill recognizes the great number of people who have helped build the Harley-Davidson brand. He refers to them as the Harley-Davidson “family”. They include “employees”, “dealers” and “customers.” Currently, Bill rides a customized CVO Screamin’ Eagle Road King. To ask him what his favorite model is would be like asking a hunter for his favorite gun when we all know different games and environments will determine what the best weapon to use is. Daytona or Sturgis? There just isn’t one above the other. Both locations offer distinct features and different experiences. Windshield or wind in his face? He likes them both and he is even ok with being pelted in the face by rain drops. Part of being a member of the Davidson family sometimes brings opportunities for fans to ask for autographs. Bill reminisces with laughter signing on a few shaved bald heads. No. I did not ask him to sign mine! When Bill rides he feels freedom and appreciates nature. He believes HarleyDavidson motorcycles are “a very sophisticated rolling piece of art” and “a very technical and well engineered product” and is proud of his role in the development of these motorcycles. The simplicity of the looks his dad gave the bikes combined with the purring of that machine beneath your seat “provides a real strong emotional connection to that functionality and what it is delivering to the rider.” As an example, “the Harley-Davidson 45-degree pushrod V-Twin motor is the most sophisticated aircooled motor in the world.” According to Bill, this engine delivers a “therapeutic heartbeat.” Continued on Page 82

Riding weather is HERE!! Be careful! I have been so busy with work, and enjoy every minute I get to ride. Lots of things coming up, so plan early! Hope you had a fabulous time in Leesburg, be sure to look out next month for my recap. Most of you know how much I love to show support for great causes. Support is what it is all about, and without the support of each other none of these events would be a success. It takes so much time and effort to put together an event, and the people work tirelessly and endless to make sure you have a good time. Next time you plan your weekend or ride, look into an event that has meaning and a great cause and something you can give back to! I joined in on the 2nd Annual PDL Poker Run, it was awesome. With the economy today, giving has been put on the back burner; keep in mind you have to give to receive! I managed to win worse hand and the winner of best hand and I contributed back our winnings! It is always an awesome feeling. Hope to see you at the next great event! The Pink Dragon Ladies had a terrific poker run, and it was the support of the biker community that helped make it possible. Please read about The PDL in this month’s FT speaks to the Pink Dragon Ladies. Also, Freedom Fest is coming up, May 22-24. Bring in Memorial Day with a bang! There will be plenty of Entertainment, a Bike Show, Food, Vendors and more. Should you like more information to become a vendor, Please contact me directly at 813-967-4607. I want to welcome a new real old place and some new people to Full Throttle Magazine. The new/old place is the Zone Lounge in Tarpon Springs.

It’s one of the oldest (1894) buildings in Tarpon Springs. It survived the fire of 1908 that almost did down town Tarpons Springs in. It’s been reported that some past residents still show up for some fun times. Now if you want some hot fun, you need to go the Somkin’ Joe’s Cigar Bar at 9767 Little Road in New Port Richey. Cold beer and hot ash every day of the week with bike night on Mondays. You can see that the staff is hotter than the cigar ash. Don’t forget about Big Shots Saturday bike night. It’s a good ride for me from Holiday, but it’s worth it. I always enjoy going to bars for a cold beer and bike shops for the bikes, put them together in the same place, add some food and why go home? That’s what Mihn of Venom Custom Choppers said he is working on it when he moves to the old Prowlerz Bar location on US 19 in New Port Richey. Already moved is the Blonde Barber Shop from Main Street in new Port Richey to 5901 US 19, Ste 1, New Port Richey…. That’s me getting a trim and a cold beer. Till Next Time, Ride Safe And LOOK out for bad Drivers. The Big “O”

During a visit to the mental asylum, I asked the director, “How do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized?” “Well,” said the director, we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No.” said the director, “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?” ******************************************** Carol and Donna, two blondes, were doing some carpenter work on a Ronald McDonald House. Carol, who was nailing down house siding, would reach into her nail pouch, pull out a nail and either toss it over her shoulder or nail it in. Donna, figuring this was worth looking into, asked, ‘Why are you throwing those nails away?’ Carol explained, ‘When I pull a nail out of my pouch, about half of them have the head on the wrong end and I throw them away.’ Donna got completely upset and yelled, ‘You moron! Those nails aren’t defective! They’re for the other side of the house!’ ******************************************* Bubba’s sister is pregnant and is in a bad car accident. She falls into a deep coma. After nearly six months, she awakens and sees that she is no longer pregnant. Frantically, she asks the doctor about her baby. The doctor replies, “Ma’am, you had twins - a boy and a girl. The babies are fine. Your brother came in and named them.” The woman thinks to herself, “Oh, no! Not Bubba; he’s an idiot!” Expecting the worst, she asks the doctor, “Well, what’s the girl’s name?” “Denise,” the doctor answers. The new mother says, “Wow! That’s a beautiful name! I guess I was wrong about my brother. I really like the name Denise.” Then she asks the doctor, “What’s the boy’s name?” The doctor replies, “Denephew.”

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife to fly down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. *************************************** There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. I was with the Easter Bunny this year on a poker run and he was in the lead giving all good kids candy. Q's Sports Bar & Girl in Port Charlotte hosted its 1ST ANNUAL EASTER POKER RUN For the Benefit of Voices For Kids in support of GUARDIAN AD LITEM Sunday April 5TH. The Charity Event in the beautiful FL weather took our riders and friends first to Banditos in Englewood then on to Fat Katz Pub where the fun and laughter was to the extreme. We were watching all the people's reaction and faces to the EASTER BUNNY ON A HARLEY. The 3rd stop took us back to Port Charlotte to Ziggy's Lounge then back to to QS SPORTS BAR where the real party started with Danny cooking a hog all day, he is a great chef. Thanks to Taz for being such a sport for wearing the costume and being your costumed Easter Bunny!!! We raised just over $700 and more when 70 Easter Baskets were donated to the CHILDREN OF CHARLOTTE COUNTY in this heartfelt event. Q's had live music and ice cold beer on tap, and I’m going to say it again, the food was the best!!! The Chinese raffle was a hit. Everything was donated by all of our stops. Harley gave a $50 gift card and the music was provided by Kenny Rose, which had us all up and dancing!!!! STACY DRENWOO won over $100 cash with the best poker hand following the end of the run. Our special thanks to Taz and Kat Tanguay, Chief Danny Richards and Lori, Q’S Manager Janet, her staff Deidra, Trudy, Bretting, Joanna, Robin & Jane for their tremendous efforts in bringing all the participants and the contributors together with local businesses, groups & individuals. They all contributed their time to such a good cause and a great event. Also, thanks to Charlotte County Sheriffs Dept. C Squad. Portofinos, Lowes, Publix, Winn-Dixie, Ichiban, Peace River Spa and….Oh yes, Full Throttle Magazine. I was there doing what ever it is I do to help out along with Lisa Dombrowski from Voices for Kids. WATCH FOR OUR UPCOMING AD ABOUT OUR HALLOWEEN POKER RUN AND COSTUME PARTY WHERE RIDERS WILL FOLLOW THE WEREWOLF FOR CHARITY AND FUN!!!!! THANKS EVERYONE!!!! Don't forget when it comes to getting your Business name out there, nobody does it better then FULL THROTTLE MAGAZINE, so call me for all your needs Ted 941.815.7218 or ted_fullthrottle@yahoo.com 941.815.7218 or 888.879.0289

In what has become a tradition around SouthWest Florida, the Saturday before Easter Sunday is known as the time for the annual Easter Bunny Toy Run. The run is hosted by the SWFL Chapter of the Harley Owners Group (HOG). Blessed with a great weather forecast, more than 700 riders and friends assembled at Harley-Davidson of Ft. Myers for the 17-mile police escorted ride to Children’s Hospital at HealthPark. The ridership represents a more than 200 rider increase compared to last year’s number. Precisely at 11am led by The Easter Bunny himself (Ride Chairman Jack Fenwick) the police escort from Ft. Myers PD, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the Florida Highway Patrol set off to deliver the toys, boxed games and arts/ crafts supplies to the young patients. As the gathering outside of the ambulatory youngsters waited for the Bunny’s arrival, anticipation was growing. When the low rumble of distant motorcycles grew louder, the children’s excitement grew and grew until the great furry creature appeared on his Harley. All of the double column of motorcyclists rode past the children, some revving their motors, adding thunder and more excitement to the occasion.

Once inside, the Ultra Classic crate, decorated to look like an Easter basket, started to fill with gifts from the bikers. In short order the basket was overflowing and the seams were stretched to the limit. Wiser heads prevailed and the last of the toys were placed in front of the basket. The Easter Bunny had his own basket of beanie baby like toys to hand out to the children and posed for picture after picture so parents could save the memory. Kelly Cowan, Child Life Specialist spoke on behalf of the hospital and was overwhelmed at the show of support from the motorcycling community. All four TV networks had camera crews on hand to document the event which was aired on later news programs. Slowly the bikers returned to their bikes and ambled on over to Jimmy’s Pink Cadillac for the free BBQ and entertainment provided by the restaurant. Jimmy’s has long been a biker friendly establishment and has hosted many, many events. While the 7th Annual Easter Bunny Toy Run is a year away organizers are already wondering how they’re going to top this one.

I would like to take the opportunity to say "Happy Mother's Day"t all of the mom's,past, present and future! I find it so cool sharing the road and the passion with many many women riders I have met over the years. these ladies are all ages, sizes and walks of life.Always be there to give a helping hand where it is needed. On March 28th , I headed to the Port Charlotte Chrome Diva's "Dash For Cash " event. As I made my dash for the cash I didn't get rich but i had a hellava good time trying.. These CD's pulled this together for a great cause and did a awesome job. April 5th was another great event hosted by the "Ft Myers/Cape Coral Chrome Diva's". This was the Hooter's and Scooters with all proceeds going to the Susan Komen Foundation for breast cancer.Once again a great job was done by the chapter! Until next time see ya in the wind and remember "WE'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY! Donta

Harley-Davidson’s 2009 first quarter report shows a 12% drop in global sales and a 38% drop in new profits when compared to the first quarter in 2008. That said, the company still showed a $117.3-million dollar profit! Harley’s CEO Jim Ziemer (who will be replaced by Keith Wardell later this year) has implemented a few changes ... a) The Ride-Free program allows all sportster owners a 100% trade-in value on other HD models, b) 1400-1500 employment positions will be eliminated in 2009-2010, c) Parts, accessories and general merchandise distribution will now be handled by an outside vendor and d) HD Financial Services is being pumped up with a combination of private funding and US Treasury Department loans. Did you know that 75% of all motorcycle accidents happen from April to August and most occur at night and on weekends? Approximately 21% of accidents happen when the operator loses control and hits an object, 14% lose control while speeding and 45% of riders involved in accidents have no documented motorcycle training .... don’t be one of these statistics

Kristopher Weston was a

police officer in East St.Louis, Illinois and he had quite a day last month. He arrested a suspect in a murder case within minutes of the crime and was a claimed a hero. That evening he was summoned by the mayor to a City Council meeting and was recognized for his good work. Weston had been on the job for ten months and was a good cop. Oh, I forgot to tell you that ten minutes after the city honored Weston, they voted to enact budget cuts and that meant he was laid off ... only in America!

The Tampa Bay Rays have

announced their Summer Concert Series lineup and it is solid. The first after-game concert starts with 3 Doors Down performing on May 30, Ludacris plays on June 13, Classic rocker Pat Benatar takes the stage on June 27, Smash Mouth performs July 11, Rap star Flo Rida highlights the July 31 evening, American Idol graduate Daughtry rocks the Trop on August 1, The B-52s turn Tropicana Field into the Love Shack on August 15, Country stars Big & Rich perform on August 22 and last but certainly not least ... The Beach Boys will give the Ray Good Vibrations on September 5.

If you are a big karaoke fan, you might want to think twice about performing in Vietnam. Yes, karaoke is huge in the country and there are numerous karaoke parlors, but the government wants to crack down on the dancing that takes place along with all that bad singing! Culture and tourism official Le Anh Tuyen told the Vietnam newspaper “Thanh Nien” that karaoke parlors are for singing and not dancing. All that movement can lead to prostitution and drug use. Wow .... I hope nobody sings any James Brown or disco dance tunes!

Bill Ratliff will end his tenure at WFLA-Channel 8 on June

25, 2009. Ratliff has anchored WFLA’s morning weekday newscasts and getting up at 5:00am for the past 22 years. Media General announced a nineteen percent drop in broadcast revenue for the first quarter of 2009 and asked Ratliff to take reduced hours for reduced pay but he decided to take a severance package and retire. This takes place after the station laid off sports anchor Dave Reynolds and eliminated their 11:00 am news cast. WTSP-Channel 10 let go 15-year veteran Marty Matthews a few weeks earlier. I wonder who’s next?

The 2008 numbers are out and Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World was ranked the #1 theme park in North America

based on attendance figures of 17-million people. Disneyland in Anaheim, CA was second, followed by Disney’s Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios and SeaWorld Florida. Busch Gardens in Tampa ranked eleventh and that’s the same ranking the park had in 2007.

William J. Davidson Continued from Page 51

Bill’s role models? His mom and dad. They are genuine, respectful, helpful and loving parents. They provided a “great” family environment with a “strong bond.” Willie G. has always been a mentor to Bill in his professional career. He never pressured Bill to be part of the Davidson legacy but is very proud of Bill following in his ancestors’ footsteps. In fact his family was always encouraging and supportive of whatever he wanted to pursue professionally. To Bill one of the most important value in life is “respect” because it drives a lot of elements. Depending on how you use the word “value”, “family” can also be interpreted as “value”. By “family”, Bill quickly clarifies saying “family” means “immediate family” of course but most definitely includes the Harley Davidson family i.e. employees, dealers and customers. Bill is living the dream. He and Willie G. along with every other employee are the keepers of the flame at Harley-Davidson. The exciting future of HarleyDavidson is in their hands. So what’s next? What does he want to accomplish? “It’s simple,” Bill responds: “I want to introduce many more people around the world to the Harley-Davidson experience and watch them smile as their dream of riding a Harley-Davidson becomes a

reality.”

“Someday I would like to write a book about this whole experience of living ‘Harley Davidson’”. The experiences he has encountered have been unbelievably “intriguing”, “amazing” and “loving”. Shortly after my meeting with Bill, he and Willie G. were scheduled to sign autographs. Bill told me during these sessions they meet hundreds of people. From his experiences so far, some people cried and some were literally shaking and declared “you don’t realize how long I have been waiting to meet you”. Others said “thank you for bringing me a better life” or “thanks for bringing my spouse to me”. Bill is aware and I think many of us as well that marriages have even grown stronger because of the silent bond that is built between the individuals while riding. Bill is literally “intrigued by this realm” which the Harley Davidson brand has brought not only in the USA but around the globe. It became evident in my conversation with Bill that there is a spiritual dimension in his life but this is a topic which he understandably prefers to keep private. Bill also stated in another part of our conversation “Life is too short not to try and be happy, living every second of it following your dreams”. “Many say ‘I wish I could’ or ‘I wish I would’ but never do – life is defined - when you set a goal

it becomes easier to achieve”. There is obviously more than meets the eye to life. I believe with Bill’s words above that he would concur to try and encourage us all to live our lives wisely. It is after all as he states “defined”. It has been nothing short of an enriching experience for me to go through the process of interviewing Bill and to write about him. I hope to do it again in the future and maybe go even more in depth. From the short amount of time I was privileged to spend with him alone, it was a refreshing and pleasant experience to find the man to be of a modest and humble nature. Bill is an unpretentious gentlemen and his team reflects the same qualities. Bill’s staff told me an in depth interview such as this one was a first for him. I want to publicly thank Bill for providing us all with a small glimpse of who he is as a human being. Many of my questions were probably a little too much for such a private man. Out of respect, there is a large part of the conversation between he and I that I will like to selfishly keep for myself. Simply put, Bill is a class act and I know he will probably not be comfortable in being complimented in such ways but this is my column Bill and all you need to do when someone compliments you is to accept it and say “thank you”.

Keep your rubber on the asphalt and, live wisely. Night Train Correction: In last month’s column on Bruce Rossmeyer, my column stated “Bruce being held solely responsible for Bike Week”. Bruce has asked that we correct that statement and say he was a “key contributor”. Thank you.

Great Destination With Calm Effects ….. ence like no other. Designed by On one beautiful Sunday I, went

for a ride with Princess to Lake Wales, Florida. We decided to visit a nice little sanctuary in the middle of the state called Bok Tower Gardens. Heading out at around 10AM from Stuart, heading north along the Florida Turnpike we exited at RT 60 in Yeehaw Junction. Stopped at the first gas station to stretch and replenish the fluids in our system, and the scooter. Looking at our map quest print out, Lake Wales was directly west on RT 60 just before RT 27. Great area to ride, and just smell and see the sites. We had the chance to see some beautiful free range cows and horses roaming and passed even the world largest dude ranch … being a Yankee I was a little confused but then realized it was River Ranch, I hear there’s some good parties there, but that’s another article I’m sure. Along RT 60 you’ll pass some orange groves and smell the blossoms if the time is right. One thing you’ll see is a huge processing plant for oranges in the middle of no where. Looked like something out of a Batman movie but nice to see it open and running especially in these times. Heading into Lake Wales you notice the change in the land small hills and dips makes it feel you’re not in Florida anymore. Bok Tower Gardens is easy to find with signs well placed and easy to see. Right on S. Buckmore Rd. / N. Buckmore Rd. to the light at Burns Ave. turn left to Tower Blvd turn right to the Tower Gardens. Once in Bok Tower Gardens you will see the main attraction in the distance. Looking up at the 205-foot Neo Gothic and art deco Singing Tower Carillon is an experi-

famed architect Milton B. Medary and ornately crafted by noted stone sculptor Lee Lawrie, the Tower houses one of the world’s finest carillons. Concerts from the 60-bell carillon at 1 and 3 p.m. fill the Gardens daily. Because the primary purpose of the Tower is to house the carillon, it is not open to the public. The other attraction is the beautiful gardens and landscape designed for Edward Bok, by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. Bok Tower Gardens is open every day of the year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with last admission at 5 p.m. The Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Singing Tower carillon bells can be heard every half-hour and half-hour concerts are at 1 and 3 p.m. daily. General admission tickets are good for one day only and do not include specially ticketed events. Half-hour concerts are at 1 and 3 p.m. daily; with brief carillon selections throughout the day beginning at 9 a.m. Hour-long "Moonlight Concerts" are performed monthly in the light of the full moon January through April. The carillon also performs during the May Concert under the Stars and the November Sunset & Symphony concert Visit www.boktower.org for more info. Okay, time to get things caught up here, On Saturday, March 21st, which was after our deadline for April's issue, there were 2 huge events going on that I somehow managed to get covered. Love 2 Ride Biker Consignment Shop in Green Cove Springs held their first monthly Bike & Hot Rod Cruise In. This is now a monthly event that was going to be held the 3rd Saturday of each month, but is now on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Ike & Dee have done a fantastic job with the expansion of the store, you have got to ride down and check it out. I arrived just before noon, Clint McFarland & Black Creek Rizin' provided the live music, there was a mobile bike service trailer on site, and plenty of good food and cold drinks. The Black Creek Chapter of ABATE of FL, Inc. was on hand, dealing the cards for the 1st stop of their Run to help fight Crohn's Disease. Make plans for a nice Sunday ride and stop in; the next Cruise In will be on May 23rd. Next on the list was the Bike Night Kick Off Party/World Record Beer Bong Attempt up at Cross Creek Steakhouse on Lem Turner just south of I-295. Paul and his crew have been putting on the premiere Bike Night in Jacksonville, every Saturday for about 8 months now. Great bands & food, ice cold beer, vendors, games, prizes, babes, and of course, 'iron'. As of this writing we still don't know if the new record was set. Check out the pictures, they tell the story better than I can. The first weekend in April found me down in St. Augustine as part of the sound crew for The St. Augustine Rotary's Rhythm & Ribs Festival. 3 days of BBQ and live music. Leon Russell was the headliner on Saturday, you want to talk about a 'class act', Leon, his band, and crew are it! Then it was on to the Clay Co. Fair, Wednesday, the 8th, for .38 Special. Big Engine opened the show, and staying true to their roots, rocked the place. By the time .38 Special took the the stage, there weren't any seats left, and the standing room was fading fast. The weekend, 10th & 11th found me playing with Southern Rukus back at the Clay Co. Fair. A new bill has been introduced in Washington DC. The politicians have been doing everything they can to keep it as quiet as possible, because they don't want you to know what they are trying to do. This is the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sale Act of 2009. To find out about this - go to any government website and type in HR 45 or Google HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sales Act of 2009. You will get all the information. Basically this would make it illegal to own a firearm - any rifle with a clip or ANY pistol unless: It is registered. You are fingerprinted. You supply a current Driver's License. You supply your Social Security #. You will submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any time of their choosing. Each update - change or ownership through private or public sale must be reported and costs $25. Failure to do so, you automatically lose the right to own a firearm and are subject up to a year in jail. It is time to stand up and say "NO"! Get with your local ABATE Chapter, or other Motorcycle Rights Organization, and get involved. And now, deadline arrives. Please check the Crusin' Calendar for what's coming up, patronize the business that you see advertising in Full Throttle Magazine, because of them, you get the magazine for free. As always, RIDE LOUD & RIDE SAFE

Hello everyone, sorry I missed you last month but scheduling did not seem to line up with the deadline. Anyway, we just experienced one of the most amazing bike rally's. It took place in a little town north west of Jacksonville that goes by the name of Angel City. This rally took place from Thursday until Sunday. It was nothing short of a bikers paradise. Anything you could want was readily available with the exception of day care. Anywhere from 60 to 75, quite possibly even more, of our immediate friends from the westside attended this PARTY. We had an unfortunate mishap on the first night there. We would like to wish a speedy recovery to TWO DAWGZ down - Big Dawg & Lee. There will be a benefit poker run in May (date still to be posted) for our two friends to help with all of the expenses in order to help them get back on the road & on their feet. It's a great thing to see friends really come together during rough roads. Until next time, keep it vertical & in the wind. Lil'Bit

Wow, what a month!!! Been a busy month for me starting with the Rajun Cajun Run on Sat the 21st. This is my first run on my new bike woohoo!! We started early meeting up at Miss Lily’s in White Springs with bloody marys. We headed out of there with about 25 bikes, heading up to Jasper were we met up with a few more bikes and finished on to the Rajun Cajun in Lake Park, GA. I had never been there before so I had to try the food. It was really good and they have a nice set up there. So if you want to ride somewhere different take a ride up to the Rajun Cajun, you’ll have an enjoyable ride and good food waiting on you. The next weekend on the 28th I was off and running again, with APC cycles and the 2nd Quarter Run. This time the run is to benefit Lake City Christian Center. This is a wonderful place for anyone needing help with food, clothes, and utilities. I have actually had to have them help me in the past and they are wonderful people. The run started at Columbia County Cycles with breakfast from the Blue Roof Café’. This ride brought 65 riders and around $2000 for the center. Mike made the map for this ride and did a great job. It was a lovely ride through some great country roads, thanks Mike!!!! April 2-4th was the 7th annual Rock-n-Wheels event at the Spirit of the Suwannee. This was the best weekend I have had yet this yr. I need to personally thank Dave Hogan, Chris of Furst Automotive, Kevin & Paul of Gainesville Harley, and Ralph & Cookie for the fantastic job of putting this event all together. They definetly had everything together well. On Friday there was a poker run for a local family in need. Buddy Cole was on his way to work on March 28, when a truck pulled out in front of him sending him to ICU, so proceeds from the run and event are going to him, his wife Margie, and two daughters. There were 80-100 bikes on the ride and the event raise over $5000 in proceeds, which over $1000 of it was donated by Gainesville Harley. Saturday was a full day of music, games, contests, and just plain old fashion fun. Saturday night was the porta-potty races. A friend of mine did the race, and she had a blast. This was something kind of new for me, boy did it look fun. Next time hope I find me a rider to pull me in the race, woohoo!! The following weekend brought a party with a group of people who mean a lot to me. It was the 10th Anniversary of the Southern Sons. This is an awesome group of people and I luv spending time with them out at any event they hold. This year, Taz was the event coordinator and I have to say congrats Taz you did a marvelous job, thanks. Hope to see ya’ll around for another 10 yrs or more. If you ever wish to see more of me, my pics from my events, upcoming events or just email me to say hey, please come see me on my web page www.bikerornot.com/tripp1966. See you next month. Ride safe, play hard!!!!!

Man, is it great to be in Florida or what!? There’s nothing like being able to ride all year round, if ya know what I mean. If you’re living in our Great Country, you just got to love it. I just can’t thank the vets that have kept us free to live life like we do. I hope God has blessed all of you the way he has me. I’m looking forward to next month’s Sore Ass Run with the last stop in Daytona and the party at the Grand Seas Resort. It will be one of the best runs we do all year. If you’re planning on making it, you should book your rooms now! This is going to be a blast so don’t get left out. The party will be out on the pool deck. Hope to see ya here. Till Next Time RIDE SOBER & SAFE Peewee
