Broadgate House Broadgate House Broadgate House acts as the Tonic Health Head Office, however the site is currently of greater size than the demands of the charity. To utilise our spare capacity, we hire out office space, we often hire to organisations with a mutual beneficence to the charity, such as Shaw Trust. Until January 23, Pharmacy2U chose our site to host the Covid-19 vaccination rollout.
It was great to be able to support the efforts to vaccinate our local community and this gave the opportunity for new people to enter our premises and spread the word of our charity. Our Spalding rooms were hired externally for over 11,000 hours between June 22 and May 23 and additionally for over 1,400 hours for internal projects.

Day care activities for the person with dementia to attend. A mixture of activities throughout the day (10am to 4pm), both mentally and physically stimulating but above all to provide fun and laughter. The day includes a substantial lunch and refreshments which means the carer has a much needed day off to spend as they wish. Each group, up to a maximum of 12 people would be looked after by 2 paid staff and usually at least 2 volunteers.
Movement 4Memory A weekly drop in cafe for the carer and cared for on a Wednesday afternoon. The sessions start with seated gentle exercise or seated yoga and would follow with a talk, activity or demonstration. Every other month they would meet for a fish and chip lunch.

The weekly Safe Places meeting group on Thursday and the Wednesday dropin offers people the opportunity to come along and socialise over a cup of coffee. The aim of the groups is to provide people with a distraction from life, give them a safe space to chat and laugh together and to inject some positivity into their lives in the hope that they leave feeling better than when they first arrived. The facilitators ask members to check-in and checkout to gauge the improvement in their mood. We always have a weekly quiz or a game of bingo and give small prizes to the winners.
The target audience for Safe Places are people who struggle with low-level mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, bereavement, and loneliness and isolation.

Broadgate House SociABLES Sociables started on September 14th, 2022, for adults with additional needs or learning disabilities. Due to day centres closing because of covid, there was a need for a group in Holbeach and the surrounding areas.
From the onset we were hitting numbers over twenty, with participants coming from local communities, day centres and referrals from external agencies. Because we had so much interest in the group, funding was secured for and additional day, this is also meeting higher expectations.
We continue to grow in numbers and have over 80 participants on our books, with new participants joining most weeks, with word of mouth and referrals becoming more prevalent. We have seen some of our participants move over to the volunteering sector, in youth groups, sociables and the HAF, as their confidence and social skills grow.

Youth Club
The youth groups were one of the first activities Tonic Health established at the Holbeach Hub. Since starting the youth groups, they have gone from strength to strength. We run two groups: Tuesdays for ages 6 to 12 years and Fridays 12 to 17 years.
The members have the run of the building, so can take advantage of everything in the sports hall - football, netball, table tennis, archery (foam!), indoor curling etc. They can also use the Lightspeed Digital Den for all their gaming needs, as well as sitting in the cafe style area, playing pool and making use of the tuck shop. There are always plenty of craft activities and also access to laptops/tablets should they need them.
“My aim for the future would be for the staff to be C-card trained and to provide a safe space for youth to be able to openly discuss their problems and be able to guide them and help them with safeguarding.“

Broadgate House Volunteering
Volunteering at Tonic Health is the 'heart beat' of the charity and without volunteers dedicating their time to our projects and groups we would not be able to support the community we serve. We are increasingly amazed by how much our volunteers do for us. We continue to endorse National Volunteers Week each June to say thank you with a voucher to have a treat on us and award them with individual certificates to show our appreciation. Currently at Tonic Health we have 35 volunteers, some volunteers are so generous with their time and our mission that they volunteer across several groups which we are very grateful for. To become a volunteer at Tonic Health we have an induction process, to include an informal chat/ interview with the volunteer coordinator, to find out why the applicant wants to volunteer and matching them up to the right role and group for them. The group lead is then notified and the potential volunteer will have a taster session to meet the group lead and the setting to see if this is something they wish to pursue. Providing the potential volunteer and group lead are happy online induction training is completed within a two week window and a relevant DBS application (if required), is processed for safeguarding reasons. After this process has been completed you are then a Tonic Health Volunteer.

Why I Volunteer at Tonic Health For me, Tonic Health has been an absolute lifeline. I was referred to the charity by my psychologist at the local hospital. She felt it would help me to have somewhere to go, to give me a reason to go out. I had been very isolated and lonely even pre Covid, but when Covid struck we could no longer even have our face-to-face meetings and, although she made regular check-in phone calls, it wasn’t appropriate to conduct proper sessions over the phone. I would have had to go over a lot of traumatic memories, then I’d have been on my own afterwards with those thoughts at the forefront of my mind. It was during one of these general check-in calls that she mentioned Tonic Health. They had special dispensation to open, to provide safe distanced sessions to those in need within the community. After a while I plucked up the courage to go along. I was made to feel very welcome, and they were even providing a light lunch which was so lovely. Just to have someone make a cup of tea for me meant so much. I continued to attend, initially once a week, then twice a week until Covid restrictions were lifted. At that point many sessions started up, mainly art related, which we could sign up for, so I joined several groups, ranging from creative writing to pottery, which meant I had even more of an incentive to go out, and I was meeting new people. I found everyone to be very welcoming, inclusive, and non-judgmental. We began to form friendships, and soon they became like a second family for me. I rarely see, or hear from, my own family, so this meant so much. By taking part in these sessions, the old ‘me’ began to creep back. Had it not been for the foresight of my psychologist, and the intervention of Tonic, I would not be here today. The benefits have been immeasurable and must not be underestimated. They gave me exactly what I needed to work through some of my challenges in a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental environment. I value that most highly, and if I can play even a small part for Tonic to help others in the same way, then I feel it is the least I can do to spare a few hours as a Volunteer. I owe them so much. Mrs MF

Commentary on finances We commenced June 2022 with a restricted balance of £145,111.15 and ended the financial year in May 2023 with a restricted balance of £8,450.51. This decline can be traced back to the residual effects of funds carried over from preceding years and the completion of multi-year grant funds, some of which include Covid-19 legacy funding. By way of contrast, our unrestricted funds saw a notable ascent, soaring from a deficit of -£12,352.75 to a substantial £13,592.00. This remarkable upturn predominantly stemmed from the triumphant outcomes of our charitable activities, highlighted by the accomplishments of our inaugural gala evening and the fundraising achievements of our golf day event. The decline in our restricted surplus, coupled with the growth in unrestricted funds, serves as a strategy to sustain our charity’s financial performance. This approach guarantees the optimal distribution of resources without being tied to specific grant expenditure directives. This indicates that for this financial year, we have successfully achieved Goal 3 outlined in our Strategic Plan 20222025. The attained level of unrestricted funding can now serve as a platform for upcoming fundraising events, enabling us to further increase this unrestricted amount. Our focus continues to around building this surplus to extend the core staff support which still remains largely at a voluntary and unsustainable level, given the ambitions of the charity. The eternal challenge we face is not being too reliant on grant funding, and especially from the same funders. Equally, we know we play a significant role in supporting people within the community, but it can be very difficult to capture exactly how well we support people and what financial impact this support may have. Consequently, we are looking at new, innovative ways to try and capture relevant data from our projects so that we can better showcase our achievements to funders and prospective financial supporters alike. This isa challenge we relish!
