WELCOME

“Many individuals are doing what they can. But real success can only come if there is a change in our societies and in our economics and in our politics.” David Attenborough Following on from the success of last year’s Deeds and Words, this year we see Tonbridge Talks Festival with the focus on environmental concerns and sustainability. The keynote speakers will feature Steve Backshall, Anjuli Pandit and David Hone, along with poet in residence Anthony Wilson. The Sunday will have a family focus with workshops and talks for everyone. Tying in with the Festival is a visiting exhibition of the Environmental Photographer of the Year in the Old Big School Gallery.

ACCESS

The ever-popular NT Live screenings continue with The Lehman Trilogy, following the story of the Lehman brothers banking family, James Corden starring in One Man, Two Guvnors and Nicholas Hytner’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Live theatre sees performances of Once Upon a Time, an absurd comedy looking at the publication of the Grimm fairytales, Build a Rocket, a story about the uplifting experiences of a young woman who suddenly finds her life turned upside-down and Revelations, a play looking at the things we do for love. For younger audiences we see adaptations of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s muchloved Stick Man, Monstersaurus, a story about a boy who invents his own monstrous friends, and fabulous puppets in Arthur’s Dream Boat. We are delighted to have new Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, who will read from his work and answer questions from the audience and Toby Smith, who will speak of his career in photography. Local talent comes from LAMPS as they return with Sensational Sondheim, looking at the range of the award-winning composer. The school concert season is Vienna: Tradition & Innovation featuring Chamber music, a song cycle and an orchestral concert. For music of a different variety do join us for our third charity singalong event, last year’s hit film Bohemian Rhapsody. Please do read on to find out more; there is plenty to entice you to join us. I look forward to welcoming you to the EMF Theatre in the coming weeks and months.

When you book via the Box Office please let us know if you have any additional requirements which would make your visit more enjoyable.

VIENNA: TRADITION & INNOVATION SONG CYCLE Schubert Die Schöne Müllerin Students and Staff of Tonbridge School The growth of the song cycle, a collection of songs, normally forming a narrative, was intrinsically linked to the ever-growing prominence of German lieder in the 19th Century. These art songs replaced the traditional folk songs as the more sophisticated poems appealed to the newly educated middle classes. Composers used this opportunity to create an art form to rival symphonies and operas both in scope and emotional depth. Die Schöne Müllerin sets twenty poems by Wilhelm Müller for voice and piano. A journeyman meets the beautiful miller girl of the title and falls madly in love, only to be jilted as she falls for the hunter. The cycle takes us from initial optimism to ultimate despair.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS The very wealthy and very particular Phileas Fogg wagers his fortune that he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. With his French valet Passepartout they set off leaving foggy Victorian London for the exotic sub-continent in a race against time.

The Viennese would claim the symphony as their own art form. This orchestral programme combines movements from some of its most influential figures to form a ‘composite’ Viennese Symphony. The evening starts with Joseph Haydn, the “Father of the Symphony”, followed by Gustav Mahler’s heart-breaking Adagietto, familiar from so many film scores. A rollicking scherzo from Anton Bruckner leads us back to the Classical era for the last movement of Mozart’s final symphony, the majestic Jupiter. CAROLINE BUGBY ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

TONBRIDGE SCHOOL PRESENTS

The Tunnel Gallery is a well-established exhibition space in the heart of Tonbridge school which has, over the years, hosted many high-profile exhibitions. The Artist Residency programme is an opportunity for up-and-coming artists to develop their work and engage with the broader school community in a creative and exciting way. Caroline’s work takes the form of installation, responding to archaeology and transforming spaces.
