SATURDAY

PEOPLE oF TOMORROW,

WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE OF THE MAZE! MUSIC IS LIFE Yesterday you feasted on some of the finest beats in the history of dance music, but today promises to become even better, faster, louder, stronger. There’s a Daybreak Session by Laidback Luke to gently guide you into the madness on the Mainstage, Belgium’s own Lost Frequencies will host a stage featuring the likes of Robin Schulz and Sigala, and for the drum ‘n bass adepts out there we have Murdock, Culture Shock and more, blasting away the Star Warz stage. There’s no school like the old school, and with Yves Deruyter and DJ Ghost on the Bonzai Stage, and Adam Beyer and Len Faki over at Kozzmozz, there’s plenty of experienced electronic musicians eager to show the kids how it’s done. Music is life, and your Elixir of Life today is a cocktail of only the very best music around.

Finally, you know: you have seen what’s drawn you here, you’ve felt the force of the magnanimous Tree from which those alluring aromas emanate. Inside live your fellow chosen ones, the perfumemakers of Tomorrowland, whose craft you’re here to learn. And there is no doubt that you are ready. You’ve amply shown your proficiency: from the concentrated magic of the Mainstage amphitheatre to the delighted revelry at the Opera, the pleasantly warm skies of our world were filled with song and scent. But that was yesterday, and today we start anew. We dive back into the maze, now more

familiar with its twists and turnings, its nooks and crannies, and its particularly pretty spots. We feel free to explore further, to take a look inside the little houses, tents and gardens that litter the terrain. Inside, there is knowledge to be found, each new experience a pointer towards the perfect perfume’s recipe. There is one thing to bear in mind, however. The perfect perfume – the Elixir of Life – is unique for each and every one of you. You can only distill it yourself; you are the ones who must create it. Go out there, friends, and surely, you’ll succeed.

Chosen Ones,

MAD, MADDER, MADNESS! Well, if there’s one thing we can say, guys, it’s that there’s so bloody many of you! We stood in line alongside you, waiting for the big gates of Tomorrowland to open up for the very first time this year. It was hot, very hot - like standing inside a hair dryer hot - but you didn’t mind. You kept on being friendly, some of you even danced a little while standing there waiting, without there being a single note of music. It seemed as though nothing would be able to stop you from having the best time of your life. Oh, and how naked you were! Guys, we know it was hot and we know we told you to dance

Think about my holidays Think golden rays Think about dancing

your clothes off, but wow: you sure did show us your best side! And as you made your way onto the festival grounds your smiles got bigger and bigger, and ain’t that just the way we like it.

We saw you grabbing a cup of coffee or a very first pint of beer - hey, it’s always five ‘o clock somewhere during Fedde Le Grand’s Daybreak Session. You danced, you tranced, you warmed up for that very first climax of the day: the official opening of the Mainstage. While the little fairy poured the Elixir of Life into all of your drinking glasses, a huge hot air balloon made its way through the audience in front of the Mainstage,

fountains popped and the first set of fireworks drilled their way into the blue skies. R3HAB took it from there and so did you. You were great, Tomorrowland, but let’s be honest: so were the DJs! DJ Diesel a.k.a. Shaquille O’Neal proved to be the bigger man once again, while Laidback Luke’s superheroes came to save the day at the Super You&Me stage. And in the end, we saw Eric Prydz and deadmau5 rewriting prog-house history at their Pryda vs. mau5trap stage. It was madder than a mosquito in a mannequin factory!

The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

The immense village of DreamVille is the place thousands of people from around the globe call home, and they all have their own morning rituals. While this might be cause for clashes anywhere else in the world, at DreamVille, it only causes fun and games. At the camping site, herds of people surface from their tents to catch the first few glimpses of sunlight. After a night full of surprises at the Gathering, it’s time to catch up with each other about the adventures everyone has experienced. But the attention of the awoken party animals quickly shifts to the nights that are yet to come, the friends that are still to be made and the DJs yet to be seen, because in only a couple of hours, the gates to Tomorrowland open... Let’s catch up with the People of Tomorrow!

TIME TO CHILL If you want to take your mind off the spectacular shows, take an exit to the Chill Out area and crash in one of the beanbags that are spread out across this cozy place surrounded by sports fields. Even at this early hour, there are multiple activities going on here. For those who prefer a slow start to their morning, there’s yoga and meditation. The sportsmen and -women, however, are already on the tennis court sweating out last night’s booze. What you do here is all up to you!

Lea & Jasmin (Switzerland): “Yesterday’s Tomorrowland Today said we should do yoga every morning, so here we are, viewing things from a different perspective.”

Robbie, Liam, Harry & Brandon (Great Britain): “We’re planning today’s action, is the festival open yet?”

THE PLACE TO GO If you’re in need of some advice, a newspaper, or fresh bread and water, the district houses on the DreamVille campsites are the places to be. Luckily there’s much more to do than just get information about your stay. If you’re up for a game of king-size Jenga, Twister or Four in a Row, the district houses have also got you covered. And in the morning, you can wake up all relaxed with the yoga, meditation and silence sessions organized by silenceforpeace.

THE LUXURIOUS WAY TO START YOUR DAY Tomorrowland can be quite exhausting, and it’s good to treat yourself to something special sometimes. Especially so when you don’t feel like a 100% yet, having danced the soles off your shoes last night. If you need a pick-me-up in the morning, the extravagant breakfast buffet with strawberry milkshakes, croissants, several cheeses and eggs might just be what you need! You’ll find the Rise and Shine Breakfast Club to the left of the Gathering stage.

Chani (Israel): “We made this piece of art last year for our friend Oz at Tomorrowland ‘15. It’s his birthday today, so this year we added +16 to the flag. From now on we’ll add a number every year!”

Where do they come from? What drives and inspires them? In any case, the statuettes of Art for Thought (AFt) have been a colourful addition to the grounds for years. But here, in our news section, they appear without colour… because they’ve run away! And it appears that they’ve found hiding places elsewhere in Tomorrowland Today, as well as in the real Tomorrowland world. Check out the pictured silhouette & character description carefully. If you find the coloured version on our pages or out there on the festival grounds, send us a picture at today@tomorrowland.com. There’s prizes to be won, and even more chance of winning if you find both the paper and the physical version! Yesterday’s winner: Alexandre Italia

TODAY’S STATUE: YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN HAPPY! “You have the right to remain happy, Everything you say can be used to make someone smile, You have the right to hug the people around you, If you cannot hug someone, kissing might be fine too. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights. Especially today.”

On your way towards the House of Books you may encounter a female butterfly. She’s here to wrap her wings full of love around the people passing by, leading to a record of 10 selfies per minute! But don’t worry if your phone is out of battery or if you’ve only brought an old-school brick. Two explorers, dressed in pink-andgreen robes, armed with a top hat and a digital camera, are there to help you. Scattered about the festival you can find two more butterflies, one dressed in feathers, the other in flowers. The challenge is to catch them all on camera. Sean from England gives us an insider tip: “If you ask politely, the butterfly girl will give you a small kiss on the cheek!”

The sets of Nicky Romero, Afrojack, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Axwell /\ Ingrosso will be streamed live in those seven countries, intermitted with live local DJs that will build up the atmosphere on their very own UNITE stages. There will be two big surprise moments during the live connection, where you will feel the love and unity around the world as more than 100,000 people come together for the biggest party on Earth. IMMORTALIZING MEMORIES AT THE TATTOO PARLOUR

On the top of the hill next to the Mainstage, there’s a dark parlour dressed with carpets and patterned wallpaper. An elegant woman, her experience proved by the innumerable tattoos covering her body, leaving almost no skin untouched, is gently applying her second tattoo of the day to a Dutch girl. The doors have only just opened, but already, a crowd of enthusiasts is invading the Carl & Johan tattoo parlour. Here’s the place where the die-hard crowd gets their memories of Tomorrowland immortalized in ink.

It’s the first time in the history of Tomorrowland that it’s possible to have the official emblem printed permanently onto your body. But if you’re up for it, it looks like you’ll need to hurry for a shot at the possibility; despite the heat, the parlour is packed from the very first minute. A variety of people are flipping through the pages of designs, others are trying out the regenerating creams, and a focused tattoo artist is sketching out some requested patterns. Marco and Jessie from Holland are the first lucky ones to adorn their bodies with a permanent Tomorrowland logo. Marco, who has plenty of experience since it’s his fourth tattoo, didn’t feel any pain. While he watches Jessie being cared for by the tattoo artists he tells us about his newest asset. “Every year we buy a hoodie, but that was getting a bit repetitive. So this time we chose a tattoo!” He paid 150 Euros for the Tomorrowland tattoo which he adjusted to his own liking: “I left some stripes and sparks out and chose for a more minimal design.” Nevertheless, the artist made sure it resembles the official logo exactly. The well-dressed Carl, one of the founders of tattoo-regenerating cream manufacturer Carl & Johan, proudly tells all about the link between his product and our festival. “People want a living memory of their best experiences and unforgettable moments, such as their favourite festivals. There are

9

a lot of tattooed visitors at Tomorrowland who cherish the memories on their skin. It’s important to take care of them.” Carl’s job is to regenerate these memories and make sure the visitors treat them well. Marco from Spain, a young man with a large depiction of a Japanese painting on his upper arm, confirms what Carl is saying: “It’s to remind me of some harsh lessons I’ve learnt.” Though a bit reserved at first, he eventually tells us it represents a “memory of friendship and betrayal.” While Marco tries out the available creams, brightening up his tattoo, we speak to his friend Sergi. Wearing the same joyful smile we recognize from all over Tomorrowland, Sergi tells us he’s here to get a tattoo of a compass. This idea is also connected to a tenebrous memory: “I was really lost last year and it was one of the darker periods in my life. But after some deep struggles and soul searching I’m finally moving in the right direction again. Now that I’m with my friends on Tomorrowland, I realize I never want to forget the lesson life has taught me.” That’s why Sergi is getting a tattoo at Carl & Johan’s parlour. “When I’m lost, I’ll look at it again and see which direction I have to be heading.” The one thing we learnt today is that tattoos contain the most precious memories of their owners. So immortalize your memories of Tomorrow in ink to relive this festival for all eternity!

Being a true Belgian DJ, surely it must be a great honour to be asked by Jupiler to be the ambassador for their Tomorrowland beer? “Obviously they needed some Belgian DJs for this, and maybe Dimi and Mike were a bit too busy (laughs). No, just joking! Of course this is a really, really great honour. Jupiler is Belgian, Tomorrowland is Belgian and I’m Belgian: it all comes out just perfectly. Upholding our national honour, that sure is something I’m pretty proud of.”

It’s been 14 years since the hardstyle world was introduced to a larger-thanlife producer from a small country called Belgium. Coone, alias Koen Bauweraerts, quickly conquered the world with his Dirty Workz record label. In 2013 his collab with Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label brought the rest of the electronic music community closer to the hard-hitting 150 BPM tempo we know and love as hardstyle. Right now Coone is working on his fourth album, but he’ll play no less than three times at Tomorrowland this weekend. Today, he’ll be playing the Q-dance area, while yesterday he hosted his very own Dirty Workz stage right after he smashed the Jupiler Brewery. Just like Jupiler and fries, Coone is as pure a Belgian product as it gets. We took him on a walk around Tomorrowland, the festival he’s playing for the 11th consecutive year, to grab ourselves a beer and and a ‘frietje met mayonaise’. At the moment when we meet, Coone’s just finished his set at the Jupiler Brewery, and he’ll be behind the decks again later

Let’s crack open one of your very own bottles. Do you take the time to grab a cold one from time to time? “I enjoy drinking beer, yes. A festival just isn’t complete without it. The great thing about beer is also that it allows you to get through the whole day - something that might just be a little more difficult with hard liquor. Beer tastes great but it’s mainly the sociability of it that adds to its power.” As the maestro talks, we slowly walk towards the Super You&Me stage for a portion of fresh hand-cut Belgian fries with a side of mayonnaise - a true Belgian classic, and doesn’t Coone just know it! Coone, we’ve had a beer and we’ve had some Belgian fries. But what else is typically Belgian that just has to be present at Tomorrowland? “It might sound like a bit of cliché thing but I truly believe that as far as house music goes - and not just hardstyle, but all house music - we really are a couple of steps ahead of the rest of the world. House music is a scene in which Belgians and the Dutch are king. Looking at the DJ Mag Top 100 you see that our two countries are best represented as far as house music goes. And that’s something I’m really

10

quite proud of, because it means we’re doing justice to our own history. In the beginning there was Bonzaï and the new beat even before that. Today, we’re still on the frontlines of dance music. Those four-by-four beats were basically invented in Belgium. Being able to continue that legacy is a great honour.” In the meantime, we’re passing the stage where his Bonzaï heroes will play today (Saturday), and coming up on other Belgian powerhouses like Kozzmozz and his own Dirty Workz stage, one of the many places to check out some of the local talent. And letting fries and beers aside, if there’s one thing we’ve got an abundance of, it’s talented DJ’s. Tomorrowland has always been known for supporting local talent, is that a trend you see at other festivals as well? “You might say that, yes. At least for now… Although I’ve also noticed some other parties choosing for a more Americanfocused vibe with boys like Diplo and Snake coming to Europe more often than before. But Tomorrowland does set a

certain standard. You see, it’s the 11th consecutive year I’m playing here, so I’ll be the last to go making statements about Belgians not being represented well enough or something - ‘cause it’s just not true. Yet, something I’ve always dreamt of is playing the Mainstage. I just have to play there one day. Hardstyle is ready and I’m ready for sure!” Hardstyle sure is ready! Maybe your new and upcoming album will be the perfect serve to get you there. The album’s called ‘Less is More’ - does that mean less than 150 BPM? “No. ‘Less is More’ just stands for the philosophy which I adhere to in the studio. The days of adding more and more instruments to the mix are over, nowadays I just make sure that the instruments I do use are spot on. That way I clear the path to have more space for the vocals and the main melody. That’s the ‘less is more’ principle. If you look at the past, the thing all the true gamechangers have in common is simplicity. And by simplicity I don’t mean ‘dumb it down’. Simplicity is the way by which you allow your music to breathe. The effectivity of a track isn’t built on stuffing the thing with instruments.”

my newborn daughter, a very personal song. Plus: there’s also a really oldschool banger on there, in the style of what some people might call the ‘true’ hardstyle from back in the day. It’s a pretty diverse album.” You said it: hardstyle from back in the day. Has hardstyle changed since you first hit the stage? “Absolutely, no doubt about that. And that’s a great thing. If hardstyle would’ve stopped reinventing itself we would never have been able to play mainstages like we do today. Because that is what we’re doing: we’re growing bigger and bigger, pushing it ever further, fighting to make hardstyle even bigger than it is today.”

you stick out - either with a track or a DJ set - things get a lot easier these days. Once you’ve got your foot in the door, you can easily get the support needed to take the next steps.” Is that why you’re working so hard to support these youngsters? “Yes, that’s the whole point. There’s guys on Dirty Workz like Sephyx and Cyber who’ve got the talent to surpass me if they keep growing like this. As far as production work goes they’re the very best out there - you simply cannot go wrong with those guys. So yeah, I try to support them with the knowledge and knowhow I possess. On all levels, even business-wise.” Let’s take a minute to just sit here and relax, because we can imagine that time is a luxury you don’t always have. Building up to the release of your new album and having a newborn baby, is there any room left to just chill out? “Once a month me, my girlfriend and my baby girl get together with my management to put our schedules together. If we’re going on tour in the US for three weeks, that’s fine, but that also means that I’m not going to go on a three week Asian tour right after that, you know? It’s a game of give-and-take and planning. But it helps to have a girlfriend who thinks along and who also considers the pursuit of my career to be as important as I do.”

“Hardstyle’s ready to hit the Mainstage”

The essence has to check out? “Exactly. Thus: less is more.” Production-wise you’ve narrowed it down to the bare necessities, but as far as the music goes you’re crossing over to some more different directions. “Absolutely! There’s collabs there with Dirtcaps and Hard Driver, for instance, but also a track I’ve written especially for

The least you can say is that you’re doing your bit to keep the spirit alive. How does it feel to give some of those upcoming youngsters a chance to play at your very own Dirty Workz stage? “It’s awesome! They’re the next generation and they’ve completely earned their place up on that stage.” Did someone do the same for you back in the day? Where there other DJs to support you? “Not really, no. I’ve always been supported by Bass Events in Belgium, but apart from that I’ve always had to put up a fight to secure my place. DJs nowadays still have to fight, but mainly against the abundance of other DJs doing the same thing or playing the same scene. Once

CAVING AND

RAVING

HANG BACK WITH VALLFORMOSA Tucked away underneath the Tomorrowland bridge, one can find the Vallformosa relax area. Take off your shoes here, and relax instantly with a glass of cava. And after a while, feel the sand between your toes and settle yourself in one of the hammocks, lounge chairs or romantic swinging chairs, like Steffen and Anna from Switzerland did to escape the absurdity of the Mainstage for a minute. They’re cuddled up, enjoying each other for a moment.

NEVER STOP

RECYCLING! The Recycle Teams are watching you, and they’re so very, very proud. They say you’re doing a great job turning in full garbage bags at the Recycle Club! But you like a challenge, don’t you? So let’s up the game. If you’ve turned in one garbage bag already, let’s make it two tomorrow. If you turned in two, let’s make it four! With this heat, you’ll need to drink all day anyway, so why not turn those empty bottles into a lottery ticket at the Recycle Club? Just as a little reminder: the blue bags are for plastic bottles, metal cans and drink cartons and the grey bags are for general waste. We know you don’t need a reminder for this though; there are Tomorrowland 2017 day tickets as well as two Full Madness passes to be won!

A couple of chairs away, Rob is listening to the stories of his nephew Mark, who he brought to Tomorrowland for the first time. Rob’s been multiple times and enjoys listening to the enthusiastic stories from his nephew. Personally he’s really impressed by the Mainstage, which is the most beautiful Mainstage in years, in his humble opinion.

The proof is in the pudding, you say? Today’s winners are below. 2 Full Madness tickets festival + DV Magnificent Greens, Belgium (no transport to the festival): Tieme van Eeghem 2 festival tickets Belgium (day passes): Jill Bijnens Shop Voucher: Lisa Delrue, Khiere Simmons, Matias Alvarez, Abhash Bhattacharya, Linde Pletinck, Orel Yamin, Marnie Suhr, CordHendrik Henkel, Remi Goethals, Maximum van Dijk Tomorrowland Flag: Lior Vovchuk, Kim Vergauwe, Timo Hertz, Dennis van Steijn, Cristina Contessotto, Danielle Meels, Sahir Arslan, Jens Neuber, Jo Lybaert, Izaak den Bussche

Walking westward from the Arch stage, you’ll probably notice a small tunnel dug into the hill on which the Temple stands. This is probably the sweatiest, busiest and most body-moving stage of the festival. Always packed far beyond the entrance, the tiny stage’s lack of space seems like the perfect excuse to lose all manners and headbang, fistpump and twerk like crazy, bumping against strangers and brick walls. The music is beyond all rules: singalong live acts with firework-patched guitars followed by Avicii bangers, suddenly interrupted by the guitar riff of ‘Never Mind’, the ultimate rock song by Nirvana. This is a place where no one cares and everyone dances. Disappear into the Rave Cave, if you dare!

LAIDBACK LUKE BLASTERJAXX What’s more beautiful than the master and his two apprentices sharing a stage together at Tomorrowland? It happened yesterday, when Mixmash mastermind Laidback Luke and his friends and pupils Thom and Idir of Blasterjaxx were featured on the same Super You&Me stage. What happens when superheroes join forces? We sat down with these three Power Rangers of house music to have a chat about how they found strength in each other. What was it like for you guys to put out releases on Luke’s label Mixmash? Thom: “The releases on Mixmash - well, actually it was on sublabel Ones to Watch - were a very important moment in our career, that’s for sure. It was Luke who first noticed our sound and after that things went really fast for us. The support we got was enormous and the kickstart it brought forth is something we’re still really grateful for.” Idir: “And to show our gratitude we try to support as many Mixmash and Ones to Watch tracks in our own sets as we can, even today.” Luke: “It all becomes more of an interactive process along the way. I remember meeting the boys back

in the day when they were still these two househungry youngsters who came by after the show to just hang around a bit. Nowadays they’re still super hungry, but they’re also superstars. My work here is done (laughs).” Luke, did you transform them into the superstars they are today? Thom: “Absolutely!” Luke: “They’re the talent, I just gave them the possibility to release stuff and took them on tour with me.” Thom: “We opened for Luke in the UK once, after we’d released a couple of harder EDM tracks. And because we were warming up we were like ‘it’s Laidback Luke, we can’t just go with our regular EDM thing’ and so we did some sort of a tech house set. Afterwards it turned out that even that wasn’t really the proper way to open up for Luke (laughs).” Do you guys inspire each other? Thom: “Definitely. Look, Luke’s one of the founders of the ‘Dutch sound’ and within that sound he’s always had his very own distinct ways. It was his tracks that were being played when we started going

15

out to clubs. Tracks like ‘Show Me the Love’ with Steve Angello really did it for us. The Sneakerz and Dirty Dutch-era inspired us and that’s something you can still hear in our productions.” Luke: “The other way around, this is just as true: I play a lot of their stuff. What I like about it is the way they bring a modern version of that Dutch sound.” You’re sharing the stage together later on, will you be wearing your superhero costumes? Luke: “Of course! I’ll be wearing my Superman suit!” Idir: “I don’t go on stage anymore, so I’ll probably be wearing some kind of Star Trek Transporter suit or something, so that I can teleport myself around the place (laughs).” Who are your favorite superheroes? Thom: “Batman, without any doubt! What a badass.” Idir: “I don’t really have a favorite one, exept for Laidback Luke!” Luke: “I’m basically a combination of Spiderman and Wolverine. At daytime I’m more of a Spiderman, but when I hit the stage I’m Wolverine, hungry to take on the world!”

The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

READY, SET, ACTION! While thousands upon thousands of festival fanatics trek to Tomorrowland each year, millions more have to stay at home, wishing that next year they’ll be among the lucky ones. Last year, Tomorrowland invented a solution to ease the pain a little bit for the people at home. The livestream, brought to you by hosts Will Best and Maya Jama, takes Tomorrowland to living rooms worldwide. Tomorrowland Today met the hosts of the livestream to see how this incredible production is established.

When the Tomorrowland livestream made its debut last year, more than a million viewers tuned in to take a look at the madness. So, for presenter Will Best this is not just any job. “Some people think that it’s not a big deal when I tell them that I have to present a livestream of a festival. Actually, it’s my biggest job in the whole year. It’s really hard for people that have never been to Tomorrowland to grasp how enormous this festival is. It’s the only festival in the world that has really cultivated another world, with its own language even! I’m really happy Maya joined me this year so we can co-host.”

Will definitely concurs with Maya on this, and he adds he’s really happy with his workspace. “My studio is literally in the middle of the Mainstage, so I have the best view of everyone at Tomorrowland. I can see the faces of the people going crazy front row, I see the DJs just before and after their sets and I have direct contact with the people that are watching from home. The only downside is I have to make sure I go to the restroom before the show starts, because the studio is located on top of a bass box. So I’m shaking like a blade of grass in there!” A big difference between Maya and Will is the interviews they conduct. Whereas Maya does the light-hearted interviews on the festival site, Will interviews the DJs moments before (or after) they play their sets. “That aspect makes this a really fun job for me. All the DJs are nice guys, and because the interviews are so close to the shows, all of them are full of adrenaline.” One of them, however, was too ‘zen’ to be pumped up. “I interviewed Laidback Luke and it was like 40 degrees Celsius,” Will says. “I was sweating like hell but he just stood there, completely calm, and without a drop of sweat. At that moment it dawned on me how he got his nickname!”

Now that Will mentions Maya, Tomorrowland Today is obviously keen to meet this new face on the livestream team. We along with the energetic host as she walks around the festival, asking people about their food habits on Tomorrowland. As it turns out, Maya and her film crew are a joy to follow. The half Swedish, half Somali presenter has a voice for the radio, a head for TV and she isn’t shy either! “I really like to roam about the festival and talk to people, ask them about their day and the special things they experience,” says Maya. “That’s why our separate roles work so well. Will is really good at interviewing DJs, and keeping an eye on the social media. From the studio he is really the glue between the sets of the DJs. And I can be myself out here, among the people!”

The whole weekend, Will, Maya and the rest of the team will be broadcasting live from 7 p.m. onwards on Tomorrowland.tv. Send your friends back home a message to tune in, so they can get a little closer to the Tomorrowland experience, and catch a glimpse of what you’re doing here!

B ELGIUM TASTE OF BRAZIL During Tomorrowland Brazil, the empanadas were an absolute hit. And don’t locals always know best? That’s why they brought their empanadas here as well. There is a normal and a vegetarian variety of this stuffed and fried doughy snack: an absolute must-try!

AVOID FOOD QUEUES! To avoid waiting in line for too long, plan your meals smart and avoid the peak hours between 6 and 8 p.m. Better to have two small meals quickly than a large one slowly.

11 SWA & MARIEKE After twenty years of running the local chip shop, Swa and Marieke retired. However, the People of Tomorrow loved their deep fried goodies so much that they convinced them to come back as a Tomorrowland exclusive. Every year, they return to serve their now worldfamous fries. Try their traditional version with the stew!

GRAANMARKT 13 We realise that not a single foreigner will be able to pronounce ‘Graanmarkt’, but don’t skip it for that reason. You’ve arrived at the food truck version of one of Belgium’s best chefs, Seppe Nobels, who also runs the Tomorrowland Restaurant! Their gastronomic hotdogs (they have a vegetarian version with oven-glazed carrot) will tantalize all your senses.

DE LAET & VAN HAVER The first in the world to create a pure beef Parma ham, their Antwerp Dog is as exclusive as it gets. But more is better, so this Butcher’s Snack comes in a trio. BELGIAN CROQUETTES A traditional Belgian snack – pretty much every local restaurant serves them – the croquettes served here are made following a family recipe. Just like the way the owner’s grandma used to make them, Belgian Croquettes prepares everything from scratch. There are no artificial flavours or preservatives involved!

SUSHI & FRIED NOODLE Do you need your Asian food fix? We get it, it goes down so well with a beer or two! Deep-fried spring rolls, fried noodles or crab claws, your greasy grub is ready to be served. Crave something a little lighter? Well, what’s better than fresh sushi on a hot summer day?

HOMEMADE PASTA Pepe is not just anyone, the whole of Belgium knows him for his pasta skills. The recipe is exactly what Pepe grew up eating, and he takes his roots seriously. Try out our favourite tongue twister: strozapreti. No, you’re not swearing in Italian, it’s the hollow pasta they use to optimize the way you taste the sauce. We kid you not!

4 FROZEN YOGHURT BY MOOCHIE Feel like having ice cream for breakfast? At Moochie, you can. Their breakfast cups are bestsellers, and we highly recommend their Tomorrowland Exclusive. It’s a royal serving of frozen yoghurt with homemade granola and superfood berries. Need something for cheat day? Add some chocolate or cookies to top it off. This is the good life!

BALLS & GLORY World famous in Belgium, TV chef Wim Ballieu has turned things up a notch. He found a new way to bring you the traditional meal of potatoes and sausage. It’s meatballs, squared! The balls are filled with one of several choices of sauce (tikka masala and truffle are amongst their options), beautifully served on a bed of mash and peas. They have a vegetarian option as well, with a base of risotto instead. Yum!

VEGETABLE

MASTER Seppe Nobels reigns the Belgian veggie-world. Though he doesn’t avoid using meat, he’s mostly known for his vegetable dishes. Seppe is the King of Carrots, the Monarch of Mushrooms, the Count of Cabbage and the Baron of Broccoli. He’s already earned the title of ‘Best Vegetarian Chef of Flanders’, and this weekend, he’s cooking up a storm in the Land of Tomorrow. We caught up with him in his packed-to-the-brim Tomorrowland Restaurant. “My sous-chef will be governing my restaurant for the coming days. We can’t close up shop, because a lot of Tomorrowland DJs tend to visit. They might have the reputation to live on parties and drugs, but that’s bullocks. They’re all into healthy food. They have to be; it’s all about balance!”

“My grandma used to serve Elixir D’Anvers to the mailman as he did his morning rounds.” 22

B ELGI U M

You’ve been named the Best Vegetable Chef of Flanders. What is so fascinating about vegetables? “I’m not so much fascinated by vegetables as I am interested in healthy food in general. Vegetables are a great product to work with, and a lot cheaper than fish or meat. In my opinion, gastronomy should be affordable for everyone. My emphasis, in general but also on Tomorrowland, is toBelgium keep it accessible – a realistic experience forTHE-REPORTERS everyone.”

You use a lot of local products. What are typical products from around here that people should definitely try? “We serve a dessert of Belgian chocolate with ice cream made from Antwerp saffron. Everyone thinks it only comes from exotic countries, but in Antwerp they make beautiful saffron. Another great tip for local products is honey: honey from local beekeepers is always a hundred times tastier. We keep our own bees on the restaurant roof. They produce 750 Witness kilos of honey a year and we use that MAGICAL FRIDAY Your restaurant in Antwerp, Graanmarkt in our dishes. He’s such a cool artist!” mailman as he did his morning rounds!” Tomorrowland loves Tomorrow. Recycling is a big thing here. How do you introduce sustainability into your line of work? “I try to use as little dinnerware as possible by making meals meant to be shared. That saves a lot of water while doing dishes. I’m also completely against plastic junk. Take-away products should be bagged in more sustainable materials. I’m very keen on using every part of every product in my dishes: plants from roots to leaf, and animals from nose to tail. We try to use as much offal as we can (that’s the ‘leftover’ organs that people don’t buy). We also work with a specific type of fish that fishermen normally dump as garbage. Nobody wants to buy it except us.”

If you could create your own Elixir of Life, which ingredients would you use? “Pimpernel is a lovely, very Flemish herb. I really love fresh tones as well, like lemongrass, ginger, lime and mint. Those fresh tones work well in cocktails as well, they smell and taste like summer.” Your restaurant has its own herb garden with over a hundred different herbs. Which ones are your favourites? “I love strong and prominent fragrances. Patchouli, for instance. They are not common ingredients to most chefs, but I try to include them in my dishes when I can.” Out of all the flavours of the world, which are your favourite? “Everywhere I go, from India to New York to right here, I try to look for food as locally as possible. Little mysterious hole-in-the-wall eateries are my favourite!” How do you stay healthy during a long festival weekend? “I realised if I can’t work, party and drink to the max, one of them would have to go. So I’ve decided to work and party like a madman, but on adrenaline and water instead. Monday is there to rest and recuperate.”

VEGETABATTLE Seppe compares apples and oranges - here are his preferences!

REVIVE ON VITAMINS IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN In the eye of the storm, at the food court next to the Wind Stage, lies the Lidl Garden of Eden, an oasis full of serenity and vitamins. Couples are lying back, one hand around their partner's shoulder, the other holding a glass of fruit juice, recharging for the massive festivities at the stages around them. LIDL, the German supermarket chain repeatedly lauded with awards for their fresh fruits and vegetables, decided to create a temporary juice stand in Boom to make sure the visitors of Tomorrowland stay healthy.

Chloë, one of the juice girls, tells us the crowd is going wild, especially for the strawberry juice. Her colleague Koen admits that he’s working long shifts, “but it’s fulfilling work, seeing all

those happy faces from all over the world.” Happy, just like the fruit they’re using in their juices, ranging from Philippinian pineapples to Spanish oranges. Koen loves the juices, but he tells us with a sad smile, “since it’s so busy, I’ve hardly been able to drink some myself. They’re so popular we’re already through half of our stock!” Belgian girls Yoni and Naomi decided to take a healthy break at the Garden of Eden and ordered some juices at the bar. They couldn’t resist, however, when Koen offered them a shot of vodka, as it’s also possible to upgrade your drink to a cocktail. “Everything is perfect at this moment. The only thing we’re missing is a swimming pool to drink our juices in!”

MESSAGE

It’s hard to tell who’s more beautifully decorated: the LEAF Island itself, or the girls working there. It’s a close call, but no matter who the winner is, LEAF Island attracts lots of people. Before entering the island, one gets the opportunity to write down a personal message to anyone at Tomorrowland on a bracelet. If you attach this bracelet to the wall on the bridge towards the island, you can take another one for yourself. Bernard and Nicky are taking this opportunity to send a message into the universe. Bernard says, “I wrote a sentence down that really sums up Tomorrowland for me. It’s ‘Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat’.” Nicky took the chance to give someone some advice she always keeps in mind herself: “Never stop dreaming.” And off they go, to get their bracelets from the wall. Behind the wall full of bracelets, the crowded cocktail bar is serving a delicious variety of cocktails, and upstairs there’s a sunny rooftop party going on. Ideal if you want to dance and relax a bit at the same time – after having exchanged messages with another anonymous visitor, of course!

Step 2: Switch it up, put your left hand up and point down with your left. We’re going seventies... groovy baby!

It’s not the biggest stage, and one can easily walk past this small peninsula in front of the dragon, but it would be a shame if you missed the Radio Modern stage. The best dancers of Tomorrowland gather here every day for some epic dance battles. The beautiful boys and girls on stage lead the dance, and show their moves to the crowd, who happily imitate. Or try to, at least. Especially for Tomorrowland Today, the artists have come up with the following (seductive) choreography. This afternoon at 5 p.m. they will perform it live for the first time, so start practising the four moves on the right of this page. Once you’ve got them down, make sure to be there for the first official Tomorrowland Today boogie and show your moves at the most extravagant stage of Tomorrowland!

Step 3: Now we’re getting funky. Throw your butt back, put your arms forward (like you’re pushing a shopping cart) and give your dance partner a seductive look.

Step 4: It all comes down to this. Amass all the energy in your body, swing your fists and push your body forward, like you’re… ah well, you get the point!

Don’t miss this spectacle, put on your dancing shoes and head over to the Radio Modern stage at 5 p.m. We’ll be there as well!

FOCUS ON THE MUSIC

KOZZMOZZ

STAR WARZ

WOODY WEEKEND

Kozzmozz is the mothership of all K-Events. The first edition was held on September 23rd, 1995, on the Josef K boat in the harbour of Ghent. It was more of a party for friends than a public party aimed at promoting the best Belgian techno DJs. The response, however, was so overwhelming that more editions had to be planned. During the following two years, Kozzmozz brought a lot of foreign techno artists to Belgium for the first time: Secret Cinema, Metrodade, Rejuvination, Adam Beyer... In the meantime, electronic music diversified and as more genres developed, they were also incorporated into the concept.

Since 2001, Star Warz has been one of the leading Drum ’n Bass events in Belgium and it has become highly respected internationally. Founders One87 and Mister M from Kozzmozz united to bring you innovative drum ’n bass music. It has always been their one and only concept to represent all styles and evolutions within the DNB scene, giving the public a broad look into its spectrum. Always on the lookout to keep on innovating without boundaries, Star Warz brings none other than Belgian DNB legend Murdock to Tomorrowland, next to other greats like S.P.Y. and Culture Shock. Local DNB poet MC Mota will lead the way.

To the people behind Woody Weekend, DJ’ing isn’t just about correctly mixing the songs, but also about the right selection and about adapting to the crowd. With their broad palette of genres and about two decades of material to pull from, absolute classics are often present in their sets. They were at the forefront of digital DJ’ing, starting with digital music since the early years, and always had a good ear for what the future would sound like. Starting out as a joke, the Woody Weekend concept rapidly became an ‘thing’ and represented good moods and quality tunes. Now, their resident DJs are joining forces to carry Woody Weekend to infinity and beyond!

LEN FAKI

FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY KOZZMOZZ | 15h00 – 16h30

Berghain, Berlin – does that ring a bell? It certainly does for Len Faki, who’s been a resident at the legendary club since its opening year of 2004. He is a no-holds-barred DJ, producer, and label owner, and he does it all out of heartfelt love for his style of music – techno. Always energetic, Len found the time to share some of his motivations with us. Len, you’re a long-time Berghain resident, but you also play festivals very often. How does a short festival set differ from a longer club set? Do you approach them differently? “Yes, sure. The set length makes a difference already, but other factors have an influence as well. Being outside and having sunshine and a fresh breeze creates another vibe than the darkness inside a club. I like both and adapt my set to the conditions. Mostly I listen to my gut and always decide within the moment which direction the journey goes. In the end it is still techno and still my signature sound, only heard in a different way.” When you’re not on stage but in the studio, what is your workflow like? How do you come up with ideas and how do you execute them? “With all the touring it’s not always easy to spend long sessions in the studio, so I’m pretty much there whenever possible. Even if only for an hour or two. Mostly I work during the night. I love it when the city is quiet, the air is fresh and silent - no emails arriving, no phone calls disturbing me. That’s my favourite time of the day and the best moment for me to evolve my creativity. Studio time is very inspiring for me, so some of my ideas are born right there within the creative process, but they’re also influenced by my daily life and nature. Spending quiet time, experiencing the beauty of nature, is a great source of inspiration. There is not really a plan or a set procedure I follow for production. It’s more like I’m searching for a way to translate the idea and feeling I have into a musical formula. It would be impossible to describe a general

workflow, because that varies pretty much every single time. But I care a lot about a good bass fundament and invest time into tweaking the sounds until they’re perfect to my ears. It’s also very important to play back the loops for some time in order to make sure they stay exciting.” Once a track is done it needs a release, and your label, Figure, still releases vinyl records. Why is that – do you feel it’s an important thing for the scene? What do you think of today’s ‘vinyl revival’? “Vinyl doesn’t have anything to do with revival – it’s a classic element that’s always in style and it’s also a big passion of mine. For me it is a constant part of the scene. My career started with vinyl, I grew up with it and up to this day there is no release of mine that isn’t available on vinyl too. I’m not playing with vinyl records anymore, I switched to CDs. They are a bit more convenient, haha. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to it too, but mostly I like to have something physical to work with. And it’s not possible to compare collecting vinyl with having the music in your digital library. Playing them at home needs more effort, it’s like a small ceremony instead of only pressing the play button. For our releases on Figure, vinyl is an important part. We put a lot of effort in perfect sound quality and in visual artwork, which is a great add-on to create a unique and complete piece of art.” You have mentioned in the past that at some point you wanted to become a drummer in a metal band. Did you ever learn to play the

29

drums or get to play in a band? “That’s right. Maybe at the age of 12 or 14 that was my plan. You have to remember that it was the early years of electronic music back then. I didn’t grow up surrounded by it, like the young generation does today. So at this early age I only knew I wanted to do something with music. It was my greatest passion, and being a drummer in a metal band seemed like the right thing for me. I loved its massive energy. It stayed that way until I heard techno for the first time. My first rave - one to remember. While dancing on the floor I instantly knew that techno was my destiny, it was love at first sight.” Can you explain what it is about techno that still makes you enjoy it after all those years? “I can’t think of any reason why I should stop enjoying it and have never asked myself this question before. I love it for what it is. I love the energy. I’m fascinated with the endless amount of possibilities and ways it offers, by creating an infinite variety using so little tools. That’s so awesome and it’s nothing I can describe with words.” But surely, you can try! How would you describe techno to a Tomorrowland visitor not familiar with it? “People need to feel it. So to all the visitors that aren’t familiar with techno yet – drop by, be open-minded, check it out and get into it. Whether you like it or not, in the end, you’ve had a new experience enriching your life. So there’s nothing to lose.”

JULY 23RD 2016

Remember that summery song that kept stuck in your head until winter came? Nine times out of ten, German producer Robin Schulz is responsible for those. Schulz was the first German artist to top the Shazam charts with his tune ‘Prayer in C’. Schulz has been producing hits almost without fail ever since. He was even nominated for a Grammy in 2015 for his remix of ‘Waves’ by Mr. Probz. With over one million subscribers on YouTube, Schulz goes viral with his videos sometimes, an example being the catchy clip for ‘Sugar (feat. Francesco Yates)’. The sound of Schulz is sun-soaked, his warm melodies and poppy vocals construct instant hits that will teleport you to a tropical beach. His fresh collaboration with Akon, ‘Heatwave’, will surely be played this Saturday to turn your hearts on fire. So be there tonight at Lost Frequencies & Friends. Robin Schulz will take you higher than the ceiling!

MURDOCK Star Warz 18h00 – 19h00 DJ Murdock, a.k.a. Hans Michiel, isn’t just part of the Belgian drum ‘n bass scene, he is pretty much responsible for its existence. With his radio show Jungle Fever at Studio Brussel, a major Belgian radio station, Hans was the first to host the cutting edge drum ’n bass of Netsky (just a teenager in those days). In the four years that he hosted the show, Hans left a monumental mark on the Belgian music scene, starting off with Jungle and later introducing drum ’n bass and dubstep to the mainstream. With his own label, Radar, he explored a new frontier, directly promoting new artists within the genre. A true jack-of-all-trades, Hans decided to organize some of the biggest drum ’n bass events in Europe, Rampage and Breakdown, in collaboration with labels such as UKF and Liquicity. The next obvious step was to start producing and performing himself, under the alias Murdock. Come and see the results at Star Warz!

NINA KRAVIZ

Kozzmozz 23h15 – 01h00 Being one of the few females in a male-dominated industry, Nina Kraviz knows that she’s not just renowned for her looks, but more so for her priceless passion and flair. She handles the decks with style, elegantly and seamlessly shifting tracks, leaving just enough time for a festive sip of champagne once in a while. Hailing from cold Russian Siberia, multitalented Kraviz had been working as a certified dentist before she got accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy, skyrocketing her music career. Three years later she was a regular at the Propaganda Club in Moscow. Her sets, including a famous Boiler Room DJ set in Berlin, are like a continuous trip. They start out minimal but have a roaring energy at the core which sometimes comes bursting out like a geyser. Listening to Kraviz is like speeding through mountain tunnels with thunderclouds in the distance.

Most of Tomorrowland’s stages are hosted by MCs. The abbreviation stands for mic controller or, more appropriately, master of ceremonies. These are the ones who announce the artists, get the crowds going, and make sure everything on the stage and the dancefloor rolls along smoothly. Some of them were kind enough to write us a column, asking each other questions in turn. Today, we have Villain answering MC Haits’ question: ‘What is your best Tomorrowland memory after so many years?’

According to a 2015 interview, it was Kollektiv Turmstrasse’s best career decision ever to switch to the Diynamic label. Their collaboration will be celebrated this year at the Diynamic stage, sharing the booth with names like Solomun and H.O.S.H., introducing the legendary German techno duo to Tomorrowland. Nico Plagemann and Christian Hilscher want to escape the routine in techno music and reintroduce emotion into their repertoire of artworks, oscillating between dreamy samples and fierce loops. The Hamburg-based duo became renowned because of their legendary live set at the Laguna, which reached over 350,000 views on YouTube and is worshipped by minimal techno devotees. Whether reconstructing tracks of Trentemøller and Hot Chip or shaping their own soundscapes, Plagemann and Hilscher create a distinct sound that is just as fit for floating off alone, far away from the crowd, as it is for raving front row. Let yourself be flooded by the soaring melodies and heavy kicks of Kollektiv Turmstrasse’s live set tonight!

Yo Tomorrowland, what’s up?! First of all, I’ve been around the world and I’ve performed at so many incredible parties, but Tomorrowland is on a whole new level! As for memories, well, I simply can’t choose one, because there’s so many! I’ve hosted at this astonishing festival several times, and every time I walk through the gates of Tomorrowland I experience something unique. I always leave with cherished memories to last a lifetime. Tomorrowland is the ultimate utopia for electronic music lovers – it’s like Disneyland for ravers! Thousands of party-people from around the globe unite as they ditch their daily stress and immerse themselves in the music, culture and the ultimate festival experience… This year I’m honoured to host the Q-dance stage, which represents the harder styles of dance music. We’re a force to be reckoned with and a movement that’s spreading all around the globe, so be prepared to be infected by the sweet sounds of 150BPM! Hardstyle is such a powerful genre; it’s energetic, addictive and intense and the Q-dance stage is a truly special addition at Tomorrowland. As an host it’s my responsibility to not only hype the crowd up, but I like to connect the devoted party-people with the DJ and most importantly, with each other. We’re going to dance, laugh, cry, sing and celebrate together, so gear up and let’s get this party started! A question for my bro Ruffian: 3 words about Tomorrowland – go!!

AFROJACK

NICKY ROMERO

Mainstage 21h45 – 22h45

Mainstage 20h45 – 21h45

From living in his small hometown of Spijkenisse to conquering the world with his infectious sounds, Nick van de Wall a.k.a. Afrojack is one of the few artists who can confidently say that he’s done it all. He has a Grammy award under his belt, numerous smash hits, a private Afrojet, residencies at the world’s most prestigious clubs and festivals, and a garage full of expensive exotic cars. This 28-yearold superstar is a global icon and has played a massive role in the worldwide explosion of electronic dance music. In addition to his own musical career, Afrojack has taken new artists under his wing including his childhood friend, Rotterdambased singer/songwriter Fais, who saw his debut release on Nick’s Wall Recording imprint: smash hit ‘Hey’! And if you missed Nick’s surprise gig yesterday at The Gathering, don’t worry. Afrojack will be taking over control on the Mainstage at 21:45 today.

Hailing from Utrecht is one of electronic dance music’s most notorious players and hardest working artists, Nick Rotteveel, more commonly known as Nicky Romero. At the age of six, Nick discovered his passion and talent for music while playing as a drummer in a local marching band. Since then, Nicky Romero has gone on to pursue his dreams and reach new heights of musical stardom as a worldclass DJ and Producer. Whereas some artists might be blindsided on the winding road to stardom, this 26-year-old talent is more than focused. Nicky is a wise man who lives by these inspiring words: “The main aim is to up my game at every possible turn without compromises.” Whatever your intentions may be, this is an artist that you don’t want to miss. So be sure to make your way to the Mainstage by 20:45, when Nicky Romero steps into the booth.
