Interior design is the art of crafting spaces that transcend aesthetics and become platforms for profound human connection It's about curating environments that evoke emotions, memories, and interactions. Every design decision is a deliberate gesture aimed at fostering connections between individuals, forging bonds that exceed physical boundaries and resonate deeply within the human experience. As designers, not only do we hold the power to enhance the human experience, we have the opportunity to change our future. As we embark on a new frontier integrating sustainability into every decision, we get to pave the way to a more holistic way of life By designing harmoniously with our surrounding environment, we are finding new ways to build healthier buildings and re-establish a flourishing planet. This thesis investigates the importance of the intersection of psychedelic therapy and interior design, creating a synergistic environment for emotional healing and self-discovery It ventures to delve into the uncharted territory where the realms of altered states of consciousness, through psychedelic mushrooms and thoughtful spatial design converge. It seeks to discover the profound impact this collaboration may have on the therapeutic and design landscape. Investigating holistic healing, the space focuses on the health of the body, mind and spirit through a variety of therapies, nourishing food and a soothing spa.
This thesis investigates spacial requirements to facilitate psilocybin therapy for single day sessions, lasting approximately 6 hours, as well as multi-day retreats up to 4 days.

The building sits atop a somewhat secluded, grassy overlook in the quiet Church Hill neighborhood. It was designed by renowned mid-century architect, Philip Johnson, in 1968. While it avoids direct traffic, it neighbors Broad St, Main St, and N 21st, which are all major streets. Jefferson Park lies three blocks to the north and Libby Hill park is a short walk to the southeast. A bus stop lies at the corner of Franklin and 23rd just two blocks from the site. The immediate neighborhood primarily consists of residential and church property built in the Greek Revival style There are a variety of businesses as the neighborhood expands including grocery, coffee shops, gyms, restaurants, etc. Its low profile exterior makes it the perfect site for this program as the green space opens up to a stunning view of Richmond that feels secluded, despite being right in the city.

Clouds, similar to the thoughts in the mind, are fluid, and constantly evolving. There is a natural build-up and dissipation of particles that dictates how well we can see through them. Plant Medicine provides an opportunity to see beyond the storm and envision a brighter future. It is the cathartic release that provides us with clarity and fertile ground to nurture growth.
The sketches study the density of clouds in the sky and their natural process of building up, releasing and clearing. They are a comparison how this relates to the flow of thoughts in our mind and the healing process that comes through plant medicine.
Guests will be arriving in this complex mental state so the design of the central lobby, cafe and corridors w ll represent th s dark looming cloud. The catalyst phase wil be represented through darker materials and a lowered ceiling plane.
The c ouds and humans can only hold so much before we must re ease. The precipitation is formed into incredib e patterns. Similar patterns are brought to us through hallucinations in plant medicine. The session spaces will include more co or, pattern, and texture to represent this phase
This phase represents the new reality the guests are stepping into, peaceful skies The design uses neutral soothing co ors and ight texture in the spa decompression and guest wing Light s paired with plant life to give the llusion of sun stream ng n from beyond

Our “client” is a jeweler in the Richmond area looking to open a jewelry studio and workshop for community events. Their partner is Brazilian, and a part of their family coffee business Their two businesses will coexist on the ground floor. They are both passionate members of Amazon Aid, working to preserve the Amazon from the destruction of gold mining and extraction of other resources. They need to add an upper level for their private residence. The jeweler is wheelchair and requires a fire stair, elevator and all spaces to be accessible.

401 W Broad St has a unique shape and opens up to the corner. It is a historic building, and its first structure was built in 1875. It started as horse stables and over time changed hands, saw an addition and became an auto body shop The existing exterior has beautiful ornate detailing a stucco facade and terra cotta shingles. These are to remain, but with a new coat of stucco. The existing masonry-filled archways will become French doors on the left and filled on the right with plant life.

The concept ties to the client’s involvement in Amazon Aid and their craft being a contributor to the issue. They are passionate about informing and finding solutions to the devastating effects of mining gold in the Amazon

The existing structure had some intrigue to it’s shape, providing opportunity for ingenuity I worked to represent the concept of the cavity through curvilinear shapes pulled from the mining craters left behind. I used the carving out of material to give the essence of depth.

The ceiling was an excellent place to dive further into the concept and design a focal point around the coffee bar. The vast craters that were left behind from mining are reflected in the shape of the coffee bar and echo onto the ceiling. Each soffit is embedded with cove lighting to accentuate the level change. As they reach the 13' ceiling height, ripples of recessed strip lighting snake around this shape illuminating the space. The lighting is intended to be more reliant on daylight and soft and utilizing soft soothing artificial light were additional light is needed. The residence floor relies heavily on cove lighting to provide a comforting environment

LAST STOP TEA HOUSE
814 W Broad St
Richmond, VA
Scope: 2,230 sf
43
The left storefront is being transformed into a vibey speakeasy, Last Stop Tea House, that will compliment the energy of the rest of the building. As the original building was previously a train station the concept LIMINAL spaces helped guide the design. A space that allows time for stillness as the world buzzes by. An underlying theme of trains tied the restaurant to the origins of the building Keeping many of the original materials built for the station will bring this idea home. The constant change, movement, and connection that is fostered through traveling by train is what I hope to bring to this restaurant.
SITE HISTORY
The project site is The Depot, a multidisciplinary VCU building off Broad and Belvidere. It’s origins date back to 1907, planned to operate as a train station. Current day a variety of operations occur here including: The Center for the Creative Economy, the Office of Arts Research and Innovation, and Alchemy Coffee can be found on the ground floor, while the Cinema program is located on the second floor.
