REPORT FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Shipping & Offshore Network was established in 1981 as Bulkforum and changed its name in 2013.

In 2018 we launched the Maritime Oslofjord Alliance, an alliance with Oslo Shipowners’ Association and Ocean Industry Forum Oslofjord. The Alliance has its own website. With our association being the international one of the three, we are looking to attract even more members from abroad. Our members are from a variety of countries, altogether the Alliance comprises some 150+ companies.

Through a membership in Shipping & Offshore Network, international companies gain access to an entire cluster of maritime and ocean based companies.

While 2019 was our most active year for more than a decade, 2020 turned out to be different than any year before due to the covid-19 pandemic. As we held our Annual General Meeting on 11 February, 2020, with a record number of attendees, little did we, or anyone else, know about how the weeks and months ahead would turn out.

We had to cancel our Annual Summit which was supposed to take place at Losby Gods in April, with the timely title “The way forward: Strategies for maximising your options” and which would look into the importance of securing optionality for your business: In our times of great and unknown change, with new regulations and requirements emerging from governments and international bodies, as well as capital and insurance partners; how do you strategically position your business to maximize optionality?

What is the value of having options, and what are the costs and consequences? How to be a smart fox in a world of shrewd wolves? was the introduction text in the programme that we launched at our AGM. Needless to say, our Tjuvholmen Seminar series could not be arranged either, but we did manage to organise two courses by The Shipping Academy; despite postponing them twice due to changing covid-19 regulations. In the end both, courses were done 100% online, which worked very well.

However, the Board are pleased to sum up a year that turned out to be quite so active after all. In 2021 we will celebrate our 40th anniversary, and no pandemic will come in the way for that.

THE MEMBERS MEETINGS FEBRUARY: Our Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 11 February, 2020, at Norges Rederiforbund. Present were altogether 68 attendees: 23 delegates representing 21 members, in addition to our auditor, guests, and the general manager. We also had a presentation of the Go LNG project, which was a 3-year Interreg Baltic Sea Region project,

by Andrius Sutnikas from the Lead Partner, Klaipėda Science and Technology Park. Following the AGM we had a seminar on Russia. First we had a lecture with journalist Halvor Tjønn called “Russia – future friend or permanent foe?” followed by a presentation by Henrik Falck from Tschudi Shipping Company: “Our experience with dealing with Russia over a number of years: Over the top?”. After that we had a short panel discussion with all mentioned above, including Bern Blikstad, DNB. Finally, we had a lovely AGM Dinner with a record high attendance and diverse crowd.

JUNE: Norway went into a national lockdown on Friday 13 March, 2020, like so many countries around that time. In London our friend Dr Martin Stopford from Clarksons Research created “Three Maritime Scenarios 2020–2050: Coronavirus, Climate Change & Smart Shipping”. Together with our member Export Credit Norway we decided that enough was enough and that it was time to organise a physical event again in June, based on Martin’s paper. This however turned out to be our first hybrid event, with more online participants (138) than present (33) and so we learnt a lesson about what would become the New Normal. The seminar was a great success and led to an interesting cooperation between us and Export Credit Norway called the Cort Adeler Shipping Talks, which we come back to later.

OCTOBER: Cort Adeler Shipping Talks, the first in a series, was held on 15 October as a Maritime Oslofjord Alliance webinar in collaboration with our member Export Credit Norway AS. The meeting, which was held in Norwegian, was called “Storm warning for the maritime industry” and discussed the newly launched Export Action Plan (Eksporthandlingsplanen).

We focused on the challenges the Norwegian maritime export industry is facing – and its possibilities and potential. Based on a newly released report by Menon Economics, “Kan Norge tette eksportgapet (Menon publication 85/2020) discussing the Export Gap and the Government’s new export action plan, we discussed how the Norwegian maritime industry can strengthen our competitiveness and win back export. The report also compared Norway with our neighbours Sweden and Denmark and how they work with exports.

Professor Victor D. Norman from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) gave a short lecture on “How to finance all the export we shall live from?”.

The next speaker was the State Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Fisheries, Lucie Katrine Sunde-Eidem, who talked about the new Export Action Plan and its consequences for the maritime industry.

Then we had a panel which included Mari Sundli Tveit, Director of Politics at the Norwegian Confederation of Industry (NHO), Geir Bjørkeli, CEO of Corvus Energy in Bergen, and Olav Einar Rygg, Head of Lending at Export Credit Norway, who was the host of the meeting. The technical setup was eminently done by Conventor AS.

NOVEMBER: In collaboration with Klaipėda Science and Technology Park, Lituania, who were the lead partner of the Go LNG project we participated in from 2016 to 2019, and the Lithuanian Maritime Cluster, we hosted the virtual workshop Offshore Klaipėda 2020 on 11 November to look at the Lithuanian offshore wind market potential. There were some 250 attendees.

Norwegian companies who presented were Aker Offshore Wind, DNV GL, Export Credit Norway and GIEK.

NOVEMBER: Our annual Market Update Meetings are normally held both in Oslo and Bergen in October. Nothing about 2020 was normal, so it was held as a webinar on 18 November. As always, professor Øystein Thøgersen from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) gave a presentation on the current global macroeconomic picture, this year entitled The risks of dysfunctional policies and globalization in reverse: Assessing mechanisms that will shape the post-corona global economy.

In addition we had Shipping Focus with Dry Bulk Overview and Outlook by Janina Lam, Head of Dry Research, Howe Robinson Partners, London and The Crude Oil Tanker Market by Mari Koseki Pay, Analyst, Grieg Shipbrokers in Oslo. For full programme see pages 16 and 17.

THE SHIPPING ACADEMY: As we do every year, we had our one 1-day course in Basic Shipping and Maritime Law, only this time it was online for 12 participants by our course leader Tor Erik Jensen from USN (University of South-Eastern Norway).

The participants were from ABN AMRO Oslo Branch, BNP Paribas Norway, Bureau Veritas, Gard AS and the Norwegian Parliament.

We also managed to make an online edition of our amazing 1-day course on China – Tian Xia, All Under Heaven, with Professor Dr Josef Mondl from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The pandemic forbid him to come to Norway, just as it made it impossible to host the course anywhere but online, so we rented one of the online studios at the university for Josef to teach from, streamed online for us.

We aim to have Josef back in Oslo in 2021.

FINANCIALS The P&L for 2020 (2019) shows a total turnover for NOK 912,700 (1,825,032) and a net loss for NOK 26,693 (profit 21,066). These numbers are due to the covid-19 pandemic.

MEMBERSHIP FEE The Board suggests that the membership fee for 2021 remains NOK 20,000, unchanged since 2011.
