REPORT FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Shipping & Offshore Network was established in 1981 as Bulkforum and changed its name in 2013.

On 11 June 2018 we launched the Maritime Oslofjord Alliance onboard SS Christian Radich, an alliance with Oslo Shipowners’ Association and Ocean Industry Forum Oslofjord. 2019 has been our most active year for more than a decade, both as a stand-alone association and also as part of this Alliance. A separate website and other support material are being developed for the Maritime Oslofjord Alliance, and with our association being the international one of those three, we are looking to attract even more members from abroad. Our members are from a variety of countries, including China and Japan.

Through a membership in Shipping & Offshore Network, foreign companies gain access to an entire cluster of maritime, offshore, shipping and ocean based companies in and around the Oslofjord and beyond. Altogether the Alliance comprises some 150+ companies, whereof some 50 shipowners.

In 2019 the “Go LNG” EU Interreg Baltic Sea Region project was completed. We were one of 19 project partners. This project has brought us in close contact with relevant institutions in and around the Baltic Sea Region and the EU research programmes; contacts we will develop in the future as part of our international expansion with regards to membership and activities.

The Board is satisfied with a high activity level and the quality of our meetings in 2019, in particular with the Annual Summit at Losby Gods, which again was successful both in terms of topics and discussions, and which lead to a highly successful Academy course on China in October. In November we had yet another successful Tjuvholmen Seminar in Oslo and Bergen, entitled “Global Sulphur Cap 2020: The Final Countdown”, only weeks before the 1 January 2020 deadline. We had nine leading manufacturers and service providers presenting their solutions, see programme attached on page 18.

We have lost some few members in 2019 and are sad to see them leave. However, we are very happy to welcome American Bureau of Shipping - ABS (USA), Klaipėda Free Economic Zone (Lithuania), Howe Robinson Partners (UK), and Norsepower Oy (Finland) as our newest members in 2019.

We again had a full house for our Shipping Academy’s 1-day course called Basic Shipping and Maritime Law as well as an even more full house for our 1-day course on China on 16 October.

The year ended with a profit for NOK 21,066.

THE MEMBERS MEETINGS FEBRUARY: Our Annual Meeting on 14 February gathered 52 attendees from altogether 18 member companies, including 28 guests, our auditor, and our general manager. After the Annual General Meeting there was a seminar on “A workable agenda for the shipping industry’s future development” with our good friend Martin Stopford from Clarksons Platou in London. He is world famous for his textbook called “Maritime Economics” which many of the young people present had read as students.

After the seminar there was the Annual Meeting Dinner with a record high attendance and diverse crowd.

MAY: Go LNG was formally finished as of April 2019, but the closing conference took place in Klaipėda, Lithuania, on 15 and 16 May with some 250 people. Our general manager was both speaker and panelist.

JUNE: In June 2018 we, together Oslo Shipowners’ Association and Ocean Industry Forum Oslofjord, launched the long awaited collaboration between the three associations, Maritime Oslofjord Alliance.

This happened on board SS Christian Radich, organised by Vidar Pederstad, former general manager of Ocean Industry Forum Oslofjord, now director for Christian Radich. I 2019 we did that again, on 17 June, with another 200+ people. So now this has become an annual tradition. SEPTEMBER: On 18–20 September our general manager Tom O. Kleppestø participated as at the annual conference for Baltic Sea States Subregional Cooperation (BSSSC), this year in Klaipėda, Lithuania on Sustainable Maritime Economy – BSSSC regions shaping the future of the Blue Economy in the BSR (Baltic Sea Region).

On the photo left is Ms Ann Irene Sæternes, Secretary General BSSSC 2016–2019, and Head of European Affairs at the Eastern Norway County Network. She was also the one to approve Shipping & Offshore Network as a partner in the Go LNG project and the one who wanted us here now.

Tom O. Kleppestø moderated the workshop on findings of the Go LNG project, with from left Charlotte Ørgård Vinding from the Maritime Development Center, Denmark; Andrius Sutnikas, Klaipėda Science & Technology Park; Stefan Jankowski, Institute of Maritime Traffic Engineering, Maritime University of Szczecin, Poland, and Andrius Uldukis, DNV GL – Maritime, Lithuania (Klaipeda office).

OCTOBER: Our annual Market Update Meetings were held in Oslo at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association on 8 October, with some 70 participants, and in Bergen at Grieg House on 17 October, with some 50 participants. Professor Øystein Thøgersen from NHH gave a presentation on the current global macroeconomic picture, entitled Steering towards a Trump recession: Perspectives on global growth in a decade of political polarization. In addition we had Shipping Focus with Deep Sea and Short Sea updates, as well as Sustainability Focus with DNB.

OCTOBER: During Annual Summit, Dr Josef Mondl gave an extremely interesting and insightful opening lecture on China. We decided to challenge him to make a course for our Shipping Academy. By Shipping & Offshore Network. So he did, and it turned out to be a great success with as many as 31 high level participants from a variety of companies. So we plan to do this again in 2020. The course was called TIAN XIA – ALL UNDER HEAVEN: China’s Vision 2049 for a New World in Order and took place at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.

Please note the “World in Order” phrase.

NOVEMBER: Our successful Tjuvholmen Seminar series has included two LNG seminars in 2011 and 2013, one on Scrubber Technology in 2012, one on Fuel Monitoring Systems in 2015, one on Ballast Water Management Systems in 2016, and two on the Global Sulphur Cap 2020 convention and its consequences for owners in 2017 and 2018.

We thought enough was enough, but then decided to make one last seminar called IMO 2020: The Final Countdown subtitled “How prepared are you? What do you risk if not?”. So we gathered our members DNV GL, Skuld, Gard, Lorentzen & Stemoco, Norsepower Oy (Finland), and Axpo Nordic, as well as Clean Marine, MAN Energy Solutions (Germany), and Gasum Oy (Finland) for two identical seminars in Oslo and Bergen on 26 and 27 November, respectively. As the overleaf photos show, it was great success.

ACADEMY: As we do every year, we had our one 1-day course in “Basic Shipping and Maritime Law” for 9 participants which took place at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, by Tor Erik Jensen from USN (University of South-Eastern Norway) in Horten, seated left.

The participants were from Assuranceforeningen Skuld, Danske Bank, DNB Bank, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PWC), and Saga Welco. We also did an internal programme for Saga Welco earlier in the year.

FINANCIALS The P&L for 2019 (2018) shows a total turnover for NOK 1,825,032 (1,831,735) and a net profit for NOK 21,066 (72,900).
