Family is at the heart of everything we do at the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation. It’s the nucleus around which everything else in life radiates. When a patient is diagnosed with pediatric cancer, that definition of family is expanded to include doctors, nurses, social workers, and hospital staff, as well as organizations like the Jay Fund. No one fights cancer alone. It takes a team, and we feel privileged to share in the journey of so many families here on the First Coast who are facing the unthinkable.
The financial impact of pediatric cancer can be overwhelming. Parents wonder if they will be able to put food on the table or if they will have enough funds in the bank to cover the mortgage or rent. They worry about getting their child to treatment. Tack on the astronomical cost of groceries with continued inflation, and the financial assistance you help us provide to families is not only critical but also lifesaving.
Thank you for showing up year after year to support the Wine Tasting Gala, and the Jay Fund. We are grateful to have you as part of our team and our family.
Tom Coughlin President at The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund FoundationSouthern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Florida is proud to partner with the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund to host the Wine Tasting Gala.
We would like to express our deepest appreciation to the restaurateurs, wineries, vendors, and sponsors who join hands with the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation to make this annual event such a great success. We hope you will seek out and patronize these gracious partners as they continue to support the mission of this great organization.
We would also like to thank you, our guests. We hope you will enjoy your evening of great wines, food, celebrity guests, and the marvelous array of silent auction items.
Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits is honored to help BE THERE in the lives of so many children and families here in North Florida.
The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation is named for Jay McGillis, who was diagnosed with leukemia while playing football under Coach Coughlin at Boston College. Coach admired the red-headed strong side safety for his incredible work ethic and intense play.
In the eight months between Jay’s diagnosis and the day he lost his battle with cancer, the Coughlin family saw firsthand the physical, emotional and financial strains the illness caused Jay’s family. Coach Coughlin vowed that if he ever had the chance, he would create a way to help families with children battling cancer.
Coach Coughlin kept his vow and started this foundation to BE THERE for these patients and families in Jay’s honor. Since 1996, the Jay Fund has provided $20 million to over 5,600 families in Northeast Florida, Southern Georgia and the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.
The initial signs that something might be wrong with Tiffany and Gregory’s youngest daughter, Liliana, were subtle. Lethargy, paleness and a frequent desire to be held by her father seemed like a natural reaction to Gregory’s return home after a long deployment with the Navy. But when swelling in Liliana’s abdomen appeared and bath water running over her legs elicited cries of pain, they knew it might be something more.
They went from the pediatrician straight to the emergency room at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. More tests confirmed that the toddler had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Tiffany, a former nurse who left her job during her high-risk pregnancy with Liliana, knew the road ahead with a severely ill child was going to be tough. Debilitating chemotherapy, surgeries and painful procedures awaited three-year-old Liliana.
It has been more than two years since that dreadful day, and Tiffany has chronicled Liliana’s story on a Facebook page. It is important to Tiffany for people to understand the “real” face of pediatric cancer.
“It isn’t pretty and it isn’t comfortable to look at it,” said Tiffany. “But it is honest and my goal is to educate other families on what it is really like to have a child with cancer.”
Throughout the past two years, Liliana’s treatment schedule has been brutal on the entire family. Liliana has experienced a multitude of complications, including toxicity from the chemotherapy that has caused permanent damage to her pancreas and adrenal glands. Her compromised immune system has left her struggling through bouts of COVID, RSV, pneumonia, and the flu. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays have been spent inside the walls of the hospital and without the comfort of her four siblings.
Gregory, a Senior Chief and electrician in the Navy, has spent more than half of the past two years on deployment and away from his family. While Tiffany cares for the daily needs of Liliana, she also juggles the schedules of her four other children: Ryanne, 13; Brody, 12; Noah, 10; and Enzo, 4. The worry and stress on this family is simply incomprehensible.
“Liliana’s cancer has taken an enormous emotional toll on every member of the family,” said Tiffany. “My other children are deeply worried about their sister, and it causes all of us great anxiety.”
The older children have attended Jay Fund programming for siblings and Tiffany reports that those outings are the only time her children feel understood. “The bonds my children have developed with other kids who have a sibling with cancer will never be broken.”
What many people don’t fully appreciate are the hidden costs of having a child with cancer. Tiffany spends countless hours driving back and forth to the hospital. The cost of gasoline and wear and tear on the car are a significant financial burden. “At one point both of our cars were broken down. The Jay Fund stepped in and replaced four tires on one car and the brakes on our other car,” she said. “Their auto maintenance program has really helped us with gas cards and making sure we have safe and reliable transportation to the hospital.”
Liliana received her last round of chemotherapy in January, but Tiffany knows her daughter’s cancer will impact the family far beyond the end of treatment. Gregory recently left on a two-and-a-half-year deployment to Japan and Tiffany will once again be managing the busy schedules of five children, while working to restore her daughter’s health and spirit.
The Jay Fund will continue to BE THERE for this family and others throughout the community, providing financial and emotional support to help them navigate the road ahead. Through meal deliveries, financial assistance with household bills and social support programs for parents, siblings and patients, we show families tackling pediatric cancer we will be there for them at all stages of treatment. Our thanks go out to the Jacksonville community. Through events like the Wine Tasting Gala and generous gifts, the Jay Fund can continue to help families through every stage of their childhood cancer journey.
Childhood cancer takes a heavy toll on every person it touches. Patients, parents, siblings, doctors, nurses and social workers all have unique and powerful perspectives to share. The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund is kicking off a year-long campaign called Letters to Cancer to reach beyond the facts and figures and share the honest and emotional voices of those most deeply impacted when a child confronts this life-threatening disease.
We want people to speak from the heart and address “Cancer” directly in the form of a letter while explaining the impact it has had on their life. These letters may be raw and difficult to read at times, but they will paint a heartfelt and accurate depiction of the pediatric cancer journey through different viewpoints. We plan to share these letters throughout the year on our website, social media platforms and emails and look forward to your feedback.
We begin this campaign by sharing Lauren’s letter. Lauren’s son, Joey, was 7 years old when he was diagnosed with leukemia and began his painful and aggressive treatment.
It’s been almost 7 years since YOU invaded my family and waged a war on my little boy. I can remember so distinctly when those words, “Your son has cancer,” were spoken.
YOU have changed the landscape of my life. Everything that was brightly colored, turned black. YOU took away happiness, hope and shattered my faith. When I look back, I can almost see my former self, but I can’t recognize that person, untouched by YOU, untouched by cancer. I was innocent, and not nearly as vigilant or worried, and riddled with anxiety.
As time passed, I somehow gathered strength and helped my family wage a battle. And we fought YOU with every ounce of our being, with all of the strength we could garner. But this battle changes you, and everything is different now. With one single diagnosis YOU managed to kill my career and ruin us financially.
Slowly, we began winning small victories against YOU. But YOU were ever present, YOU never seemed to leave. YOU became a part of me, became a part of the fabric of our family, YOU have become a part of our story. No one tells you just how horrific it really is. The medications, the IV’s, the inpatient stays, the trips to the clinics, and you have no choice, but to just sit there and take it. YOU had all the control.
And then finally three and a half years later, the end. We finally get to ring the bell… We beat YOU! YOU are gone! But the reality, the truth, is even when it’s over, it’s not. YOU are always there, YOU are part of my child, a part of me, a part of us, and a part of our story. And It’s unfair!
I think of YOU more often than I care to admit, YOU still invade my thoughts daily. I think of the what if’s and what could be’s. I never disclose this to even my closest confidants, how often YOU cross my mind. But even 7 years later, we can be having a wonderful time at a party, or I can be watching my son play in a football game and I can still glance over at my beautiful, handsome, strong, healthy child and see that little sick boy flash before my eyes; that is YOU cancer. YOU don’t ever really leave. It’s like YOU reminding me that you are there lurking in the shadows.
The reality is that YOU will be with me forever. And it is difficult to despise something that has become an integral part of who you are. So during the times that YOU so often invade my thoughts, I try to also remember some of the good that YOU brought me too. YOU brought me a love of my community, that stood behind me and carried me through with faith and hope, when mine could not be found. YOU sent friends, some who I had never met before, willing to help and lend a hand, when we needed it the most. YOU showed me the true meaning of grace. And YOU showed me that love and light do really exist in darkness.
Cancer, YOU will forever be a part of me and my story. YOU have made me fight a war that I didn’t sign up for and that in many ways I will continue to battle forever. However, YOU have also shown me the best of the human spirit and make me want to give back. YOU, CANCER have not broken me or my child!

ARTIST: Wesley
AGE: 8
DIAGNOSIS: Desmoplastic Small Round Cell
Eight-year-old Wesley is a super trooper and never complains despite his rare cancer diagnosis. He’s a great big brother who loves picking flowers and going to the playground with his sister and cousin. While his cancer diagnosis may have slowed him down a bit, Wesley still zips down the slide with a huge smile on his face. Wesley painted the slide and the beautiful flowers on this platter his favorite color, red, to showcase the joy he finds at the playground. When his cancer treatments prevent him from an active day, Wesley enjoys playing video games and has become an expert at Minecraft.
ARTIST: Preslee
AGE: 7
DIAGNOSIS: Rhabdomyosarcoma
As the baby of the family, 7-year-old Preslee is a feisty spitfire with a warm heart who manages to charm everyone she meets. Diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma last spring, Preslee has developed a passion for art and combs through YouTube videos to learn new drawing techniques. She enjoys coloring and painting and is inspired by bright colors. The sky blue in her design is her favorite color and reminds her of sunny summer days, but she chose to paint strawberries and watermelons in honor of her fruit-loving sister who has supported her through every step of her cancer journey.
ARTIST: Marsha
AGE: 15
DIAGNOSIS: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Marsha was just starting high school and exploring new activities and friendships when her world took a sharp turn. Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last spring, Marsha now completes her studies at home and has limited mobility. Marsha has a real talent for drawing and uses art as a form of self-expression. A beloved daddy’s girl, Marsha is also an animal lover and has a pet snake and tarantula at home. Her affection for all creatures great and small led to her drawing a turtle surrounded by a school of fish on this beautiful platter.

Since day one, our goal at Nemours Children’s Health has been to reduce the spread and return of cancer with breakthrough treatments. But we also create programs that go well beyond medicine to help children recover and stay healthy. One of our programs focuses on adult care transition. Another helps prepare kids for college. We even have a program that ensures kids don’t miss out on milestone life events like the school prom. And our research in children’s cancer care is opening doors to even more advancements. Advancements that will help children recover in ways ordinary medicine simply can’t.

For this reason, and more, we are proud to partner with the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation to serve families in our community tackling childhood cancer.
