Together, the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund and Wolfson Children’s Hospital are helping families tackle childhood cancer. The Jay Fund helps children like Lucy and their families focus on their fight against childhood cancer by taking away some of the burdens that come with the diagnosis. From paying household bills to financial planning, from making a child’s life brighter through playing games in Evan’s Teen Room at Wolfson Children’s Hospital to organizing special visits, the Jay Fund is there for our patients and their families. Thank you!

WELCOME! Thank you for joining us this evening for our 26th annual Celebrity Golf Classic. It’s so good to be back together. No one could have expected or planned for the health crisis we all experienced in 2020, just as no parent anticipates or plans on hearing those four, gut-wrenching words: Your child has cancer. Life is unpredictable, but thankfully families tackling childhood cancer know they can always depend on the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation. We are so grateful you are able to be here tonight to help us raise money for our local patients and their families facing the unthinkable. Your continued support allowed us to BE THERE for families during the pandemic when they needed us most. While many organizations had to tighten their belts, the Jay Fund was not only able to continue our mission of helping families to keep a roof over their head, food on the table, and the utilities running, we were able to expand our programs and be innovative in ways we never imagined. But we never would have been able to do any of our work without you. Since our foundation’s inception and because of you, we have distributed over $14 million and touched the lives of over 5,000 families. You are the silver lining in the cloud of childhood cancer. Please enjoy the evening and I look forward to seeing you on the course tomorrow. Enjoy the fabulous setting and golf course!

JAY MCGILLIS The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation was founded in 1996 in honor of Jay McGillis, a player of Coach Coughlin’s from his time at Boston College. McGillis was a team player and strong-side safety in the early 1990s. The red-headed kid impressed Coach Coughlin with his work ethic and intense play. It was during a game against Syracuse in 1991 that McGillis felt something was wrong. What was originally thought to be a case of mononucleosis would end up diagnosed as Leukemia. Jay McGillis passed away on July 3, 1992, he was 22. Jay left behind his parents, John and Pat, and five siblings. In the eight months between Jay’s diagnosis and the day he lost his battle with cancer, the Coughlin family saw firsthand the physical, emotional, and financial strains the illness caused the McGillis family. After going through the tragic events with Jay’s family, Coach Coughlin vowed that if he ever had the chance, he would create a way to help families with children tackling cancer. In 1996, that opportunity arose after being named the first the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars expansion team, and Coach Coughlin started the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation. It began as a golf tournament, the Jay Fund has evolved in size and scope helping thousands of families in Northeast Florida and the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan area who are facing the unthinkable. Since the founding of the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund, Jay’s family has been actively engaged in the work of the Jay Fund and have attended every Celebrity Golf Classic since 1996. Jay’s brother, Mike McGillis, serves on the Jay Fund Advisory Board. As the years pass, the McGillis family continues to inspire the efforts of the foundation.

MISSED MOMENTS COVID has been hard on everyone. We all have missed things in our lives this past year- birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, family vacations. For patients tackling cancer, missing out on events and other celebrations is sadly too often how their lives are from Day 1 after their diagnosis. The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund wasn’t content to sit the pandemic out. Instead, it set out to be sure some moments were not missed for the children and families. Here are two moments no longer missed with Theo’s and Bentley’s families.
THEO “Theo is a huge golf fanatic. He couldn’t attend THE PLAYERS Championship, but the Jay Fund created a cool golf experience for him at TPC Sawgrass right after. It came at the right time. I learned Theo lost some of his hearing during an audiology exam the week before. When we pulled up to TPC Sawgrass, Theo was completely surprised. And his spirits lifted.” Chase, Theo’s Mom
When Theo was in kindergarten, he was reaching all the milestones that parents typically lookout for in their young children. “Everything seemed normal,” Theo’s mom Chase, remembers. “He didn’t have any signs or symptoms except that one of his eyes started drifting slightly, so I scheduled an appointment with an ophthalmologist.” The doctor discovered that Theo had lost sight in that eye and he sent the family for an emergency MRI. On March 18, 2018, Theo was diagnosed with a brain tumor called an optic nerve glioma. “I had never even thought of childhood cancer before this,” Chase says. “Then all of the sudden it hits you—this whole new world opens up.” Theo is now 9 years old and has endured almost three years of treatment without much break. During the course of Theo’s treatment, the family learned about the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. Chase has received support from the Jay Fund throughout Theo’s treatment—from financial planning seminars to help with household bills, trips to the zoo and fun activities for Theo and his family. After having to turn down a special Jay Fund invitation to the 2021 PLAYERS because of his treatment schedule, Theo got to hang out with the TPC Sawgrass staff and go on a golf cart scavenger hunt. The day ended with a tour of the facilities where he got to see his favorite golfer, Tiger Woods’ locker and was greeted by another favorite golfer—UF’s Robby Eisch.

BENTLEY “They’ve helped with getting him out of the house and away from treatments. The first thing we did was go see Monster [Truck] Jam, which he loves, and most recently, he had a Zoom call with Coach Ron Rivera of the Washington Football team. Coach Rivera and Bentley finished their cancer treatments around the same time, so it was cool to get to see them chat. Bentley asked him a lot of questions.” Jessica, Bentley’s Mom
When Bentley was just three years old, his mom Jessica noticed that his lymph nodes were swollen and brought him to the emergency room. “They were doing his vitals and discovered a heart murmur, so they immediately did some chest x-rays and found a large mass above his heart,” Jessica remembers. “They did some additional tests and it turned out to be leukemia. I literally dropped down to my knees. That was a life changing day for sure.” Shortly after Bentley was diagnosed, his case worker introduced them to the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. Over the past few years, the Jay Fund has helped the family pay for gas, groceries, medical bills, and provided special experiences as a ‘day off’ from cancer. Like most first graders, Bentley is looking toward the future. He is super smart at math and reading and wants to play football and baseball next year, but, according to mom, only if he keeps his grades up.
TONIGHT’S SPECIAL GUEST MEET HARPIST, ISABELLE Coach Coughlin and Isabelle first met in April 2018 while he was visiting the pediatric oncology floor. When Coach came to the hospital bearing gifts, Isabelle wanted to give as well. Her gift to Coach was playing a song on her harp. He was extremely touched by her beautiful gesture. It was her way of giving back to the Jay Fund for the financial and emotional support her family received during her journey. Since then, Isabelle has finished treatment and is now officially in remission. She is a junior at University of Miami, where she studies Music. Isabelle was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in January 2018 at the age of 18. Isabelle’s dad, Steven, says, “She went to a minute clinic because she was not feeling well. The next thing we know, we were getting a cancer diagnosis. Isabelle took it like a champ. She was in the hospital for roughly 5 months.” We are proud to share Isabelle’s talent with you tonight. She will be playing her harp as we enjoy dinner.

PATIENT ART The Celebrity Golf Classic auction showcases artwork painted by patients who are being treated for childhood cancer. Art is an outlet for their creativity during a time when they are frightened and sick. But as the pieces reflect, they are able to find hope and joy in creating them. The Jay Fund supports the goal is to make time in the clinic and hospital more positive and to improve the overall experience.
Ava, Age 8 “ S U M M E R D A Z E ” P L AT T E R Ava is in 2nd grade where she enjoys art class and loves to use special art supplies, like she got to for this project. In July, Ava first complained that she could not open her mouth wide enough to eat. She then started having bad dreams and night terrors. Ava’s mom later noticed a protrusion on the side of her face and took her to the doctor. She was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer that forms in soft tissue. Ava has two fish, Clover and Glo, and one day would like to own a golden retriever. She loves playing outside with her friends, riding bikes, and her electric scooters. Ava would like to be a chef when she grows up, which inspired her art piece. The platter reflects all her favorite fruits and favorite colors.
Gillian, Age 20 “ WAV E S O F H O P E ” F L O W E R P O T In 2015, Gillian was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma just three months after starting her freshman year of high school. Immediately following her diagnosis, Gillian underwent surgery removing a malignant tumor and a significant portion of her femur. She continued chemotherapy and physical therapy to learn how to walk again with her new prosthetic. Gillian is the recipient of the Jay Fund’s 2019 Sherry Murray Memorial Scholarship. Last year, Gillian began her sophomore year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing a degree in Nursing. Unfortunately, her cancer has reared its ugly head and she recently relapsed. She is not able to attend school right now but is looking forward to going back to school and continuing her studies soon. Doing art projects and helping others is something that helps Gillian cope. When asked about her piece she said, “It’s unique to me and I like that it is colorful and abstract.” 2019 TOM COUGHLIN JAY FUND FOUNDATION CELEBRIT Y GOLF CL ASSIC

PATIENT ART Lucy, Age 5 “FLOWER POWER” BOWL Lucy is 5 years old and was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in April 2020. She recently completed a bone marrow transplant and is scheduled for her second one soon. Lucy is a very bright little girl and has a passion for learning. Mom says Lucy has been working on educational activities on her own and is excited to start Kindergarten. She adores her little sister Charlotte and loves playing with her golden retriever, Fitz. She enjoys riding her bike and scooter and going to the beach. Lucy won the Best Dressed Award at the Jay Fund’s Virtual Talent Show where she performed her very own magic trick. When she grows up, she wants to be an artist. The colors of the rainbow inspired her art piece. When asked if there is anything else people should know about her, and she replied, “I am getting cancer over with!”
Marzel, Age 18 “ M A R Z E L O U S ” P L AT T E R Marzel is 18 years old and was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March 2020. His family lives in Tallahassee and travels to Jacksonville for Marzel’s medical care. He has been diagnosed with a residual disease, which required him to undergo a bone marrow transplant and Dad was his donor. Marzel is a senior and unable to attend school currently due to intense treatment needs. He is eager to resume once medically cleared. He likes spending time with his two brothers and his Jack Russell, Mojo. He enjoys playing basketball. He would like to one day be a fashion entrepreneur and design his own brand of clothes, shoes, and accessories. He would like to create items “unique like himself”, which was the inspiration for his pottery piece.
Meleah, Age 10 “ C R E AT I V E A B S T R A C T ” U T E N S I L H O L D E R Meleah, diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in September 2020, has handled her diagnosis and treatment with amazing positivity and an optimistic attitude. Meleah is an old soul who seems much wiser than her 10 years. She treasures time with her two brothers; her cat, Buddy; teacup chihuahua, Lotus; and bunny, Jazzy. Melah is a Black Belt in Taekwondo, participated in the Lego League Robotics Club and Competition, is a Girl Scout (5 years) and she completed 5 Triathlons (2 of them USA sanctioned). She painted a cookware utensil holder. When asked about her piece she said, “It was made with a bunch of creativity.”
