The Gardening of Art | Wynne Lucas When Pat Beudel and her husband, Bud, decided to move from Michigan to Indiana in 1992, they had a multitude of cities and towns from which to choose. However, they chose Zionsville; and according to her, they have never regretted their decision. Pat is a proud Zionsville resident who offers a unique artistic talent to the town with art created around gourds. This local artist has found a way to truly maintain the local aspect of her art. Over a two-year period, she grows and dries her own gourds that she later uses as her canvas. As I soon discovered, raising gourds is not a simple process. In addition, only a very specific type of gourd can be used in Pat’s art. Every aspect of Pat’s process is as unique as it is interesting. Even her garden is unique. In the late 1990s, it was deemed a “National Wildlife Habitat,” and she has maintained this status ever since. She keeps a multitude of food sources, water sources, and shelter — a bat house included — within her organic habitat. After talking with Pat, the importance of the Zionsville community became evident. Pat wanted to specifically

mention the impact that Elizabeth Muellur has had on the Zionsville community. Pat and Elizabeth are both considered “Master Gardeners.” To keep this title, they must both complete various volunteer activities around the community. Presently, she is helping to restore an old cemetery north of town that dates back to the Civil War. Being a certified Master Gardener, she is able to grow the gourds that she uses in her artwork. Although she was a gardener first, her love for art bled into her gardening. She managed to teach herself most of the techniques that she uses in her art. She saw gourds as being a more versatile alternative to canvas. For those who are interested in appreciating these pieces of art in reality, there are a variety of options present. Her art is displayed within the CCA Gallery in downtown Zionsville and in the Renaissance Hotel located at 11925 Meridian Street in Carmel. In addition, LS Travel Retail Stores, located in airports around the United States, feature local artistry. Her art is featured at the Indianapolis airport LS Travel Retail Stores located in Concourse B. There, you can find walnut-sized gourd necklaces. Pat is not the only one to appreciate all that gourds have to offer as art. To my surprise, there is an Indiana Gourd Society. This year, the society will hold its annual statewide may 2013

gourd show on May 4 and 5. The show will be at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lebanon, Indiana. Although Pat will not be showing her artwork this year, she has in the past. Reading this article does not adequately allow a person to appreciate all aspects of Pat’s artwork. Thus, I encourage you all to dig deeper into this interesting area of art that Zionsville has to offer. Wynne Lucas is a sophomore at Purdue University.

great day improvements

When it comes to home improvement and expansion projects, Patio Enclosures and Stanek Windows are two brands that have long been synonymous with quality and durability. Both Clevelandborn brands are now part of Great Day Improvements, LLC – a residential /commercial remodeler and manufacturer offering a portfolio of tailored home improvement solutions. “This is one of several initiatives we’ve executed to transform and expand Great Day Improvements into a one-stop home improvement company for our customers,” said Tom Williams , General Manager of Great Day Improvements in Fishers, IN. “The Stanek brand has been in existence for 60 years and in terms of quality, it is an excellent complement to our legendary Patio Enclosures brand. We are excited about the continued growth of our organization and the additional product offering we will be able to extend to our customers.” Since 1966, Patio Enclosures has custom-manufactured and installed over 250,000 sunrooms, solariums and screen rooms nationwide. And they are known for being some of the best rooms on the market. The same is true for Stanek Windows, which has been producing exquisitely crafted replacement windows, engineered to outperform both the elements and the competition, since 1953.

A Zionsville Mother Brings fashion to the NFL | Ray Compton . Photos | Matt Bowen

Oregon based heavyweight.

It almost sounds like a fairy tale that could evolve into a Hollywood script.

But after conferring with husband, Pete, longtime Chief Operating Officer of the Indianapolis Colts, Ward jumped in feet first. The NFL had a new licensee.

It starts with a three-year-old girl who learns to sew in her grandmother’s bedroom. Then as a teenager, she rises early in the morning and designs, stitches and wears her day’s outfit to high school. Finally, this suburban wife spawns a national apparel company, snares a licensing agreement with the galaxy’s premier professional sports league, flies to Asia four times in 12 months to meet with her suppliers and markets her products on a television network and in print publications such as the New York Times, Vogue and People Magazine. But this is not a folkloric fantasy that features elves, goblins and mermaids. It is a true life story that has been unfolding in Zionsville and involves a ground breaker who is rewriting an entire book in women’s sports apparel. Yes, Lena Ward and her All Sport Couture brand have turned into one of the hottest items today in the National Football League and who someday soon may charge into numerous other college and professional sports marketplaces. “Sometimes it has been hard to believe,” said Ward. “Everything is moving so fast.” Indeed, it has been a whirlwind trip for Ward, who after securing a financial associate in 2012 has All Sport Couture on fast forward. The company roared out of the gates after meeting with NFL marketing and licensing executives in the league’s New York office. Discussions centered on different scenarios that All Sport Couture could become a licensed vendor with its line of apparel targeted for female fans. One possibility included linking up with Nike, who replaced Adidas as the league’s official team supplier. The thought was that Ward could seamlessly take her concepts to the

Zionsville_May_2013.indd 13

“I said I’ll do it myself,” she recalled. “The league puts you through the financial ringer. There are fees and guarantees involved and the application is 40 pages. But in the end, we wanted to drive the car.” And the NFL journey has been a remarkable one that has filled numerous lifetime experiences. In its first year of life, All Sport Couture dispatched product to 31 of the 32 NFL teams. Only Dallas, which has its own licensed program, has yet to climb aboard. Enthusiastic player wives from the Kansas City Chiefs, the New York Jets, Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans have purchased a variety of outfits. The wife of Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz wore an All Sport Couture outfit during an interview on NFL Network. Ward has also handled one-on-one meetings with NFL owners Arthur Blank of Atlanta and Jeffrey Lurie of Philadelphia. During the 2012 NFL season, Ward and All Sport Couture anchored Style Lounges on game day in several NFL stadiums, including stops in San Diego, Pittsburgh and Lucas Oil Stadium. “We blew it out at the Colts game,” Ward remembered. “We had men and women stopping in to buy from us.” But the relationship with the NFL has expanded beyond the stadium and team stores. Recently, Ward was called to the New York league office to meet with officials of Macy’s. Yes, that Macy’s. “The NFL is a great partner,” she said. “Our meeting with Macy’s was phenomenal. We were able to set up in the NFL showroom and show our line. If you are willing to step up, the league will put their marketing and media behind you.” m a y 2 0 1 3 | atZionsville.com 13 4/29/2013 12:59:27 PM

That partnership philosophy spilled over into numerous marketing and advertising campaigns last season. All Sport Couture and the NFL were co-op partners in advertising ventures in several national print publications and in advertising on the NFL Network. The NFL has longed to have a creative women’s apparel provider. The league has recognized that is has a huge female base of fans and not all women wish to wear Uncle Joe’s jersey to games. In fact, Ward began her mission 12 years ago when she took a Peyton Manning replica jersey, sliced it up and pieced together a more fitted, stylish look for her trips to Colts games. “People were stopping me and asking where I bought it,” Ward recalled. “I realized there was something there.” Perhaps there was a seed of an idea but not for a few years. Ward did submit artwork to the NFL after her Manning jersey episode but the league was not prepared to move too quickly on a partnership. The NFL was involved in negotiations with Reebok/Adidas and Nike. Those talks involved millions of licensing dollars. The door finally cracked open for All Sport Couture when the NFL adopted its Fit for You platform for female fans. The league was now searching for a teammate.

Ward’s previous artwork was revisited and a game plan was hatched. Among its growing line, All Sport Couture line offers individual team halter tops, hooded pullovers and snakeskin knits. A colorful, classy catalog touts that the “franchise” hooded full front zip sweatshirt is just the “bling piece you need for the upcoming season.” It features side entry pockets, metal-tipped draw cords for the hood and the softness of the foil print fabric. The nickname of the team is tucked in the lining of the hood. The catalog also inspiringly notes that the halter jersey “is not your daddy’s, brother’s or boyfriend’s jersey…this is all female and fun.” Ward concedes that her line – which must be approved by the NFL — may not be for every female. “Our line is not for everybody,” said Ward, who has been pleased by the elasticity shown in age range for her items. “We are higher end because of our quality of fabrics. We understand that not everyone will buy our brand. You are not buying us just for a logo on a tee-shirt and sweatshirt.” And those fashion lessons were not learned in grandma’s sewing room or three years at Florida State University. Ward’s tour of fashion included stops at the Paris (France) Fashion Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. An internship followed at Betsey Johnson, a legendary New York shop known for feminine and whimsical approach to fashion.

A key element to Ward’s approach is being a designer of the apparel used by All Sport Couture. She doesn’t consult catalogs for items to purchase. Instead the owner travels to Viet Nam and China to huddle with vendors and develop her concepts into actual clothing. Telephone conversations adapt to dramatic time differences, samples are exchanged and orders are placed. In the meantime, Ward is still constructing a young organization that is not trying to get too far ahead of itself. Two recent hires have provided a framework for growth but the days are stretched into late night sessions of planning, organizing and executing. “You can pick out one of 20 things to do and there are still so many things to do,” she said. “Our philosophy is to crawl, walk and run. But it seems like we are sprinting all the time.” The sprint may turn into a marathon. All Sport Couture is starting a pilot program with the NCAA this year and someday hopes to land licensing programs with the NBA and NHL. And this voyage all started when a grandmother taught a little girl how to sew.

This background led to a position with Bullfrog Clothing, a professional sports licensee. While at Bullfrog, Ward met CEO Tom Shine of Logo Athletic in Indianapolis. Shine selected Ward as an architect in building a licensing program at the new Logo 7. “I found out that licensed apparel was for me.” she said. But the career moved to the backburner in 1993. She married husband Pete and the couple had two children, Mady and Sam. “I was a stay at home mom,” Ward recalled. “I missed working and playing with designs. I designed the Colts cheerleaders outfits but I didn’t keep up with the high fashion world.” That route changed after a meeting with NFL executives and an ensuing telephone call to her husband. His response was simple. Go for it, girl. “Pete has been so supportive,” Ward said. “It seems that I have been gone more than I have been here in the last year. He is the greatest supporter that I have.” may 2013

Beth Boles A Mother with a Racer's Heart | Neil Lucas

H

ave you ever watched the drivers at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway screaming around the track at over 200 miles per hour and wondered what the mothers of those drivers must be feeling? Surely they must be feeling some sense of terror as they watch their sons. I recently had the opportunity to ask that question to Zionsville resident, Beth Boles, whose 21 year old son, Conor Daly, will be competing in his first Indy 500 this month. The response I received from Beth was very surprising. When I first asked Beth about her greatest concerns regarding her young son’s career choice as a racecar driver, I fully expected to hear about the danger involved. Amazingly, she responded that her greatest concern is the economic and occupational instability that is a part of a young racer’s life. Her son has decided to forgo a college education, as well as a more predictable lifestyle, to pursue his dream of racing at the highest level. As Beth explained, despite the glamour of being a racecar driver, there are many

18

zionsville c o m m u n i t y

Zionsville_May_2013.indd 18

downsides to this career. Despite his ability, a driver is in constant search for sponsorship money to enable him to continue racing. Without that flow of sponsorship money, even the most talented drivers are relegated to inferior equipment and teams. After getting to know Beth a little better, I began to understand her answer that initially surprised me. It became increasingly evident that Beth is a racer at heart, with an admirable, off-the-charts energy level. Her whole life has been spent in racing. (As a side note, Beth is the first woman I have met to casually wear one of the huge racing watches with five or six dials that you see the likes of Roger Penske wearing during his interviews). Beth’s love of racing began in 1969 when her father, a Noblesville physician, first took Beth to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Beth was immediately stricken with the racing bug. While in college at Purdue, Beth would skip class in May just to sit in the bleachers at the Speedway. In order to fulfill a graduation requirement at Purdue, she produced a video, not surprisingly, of the Speedway. Beth was even a 500 Festival Princess in 1978.

After graduation from Purdue, she got a job with a small local radio station in Noblesville. She immediately talked her boss into letting her roam the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May. During this time, she would randomly interview drivers and other personnel, then place the interviews on the air. In 1983, while doing an interview for the radio station, she met a dashing young Irish driver named Derek Daly. She was married to Derek for 13 years and had three boys, Conor, Colin, and Christian. Amazingly, while married to Derek, Beth began a racing career of her own. In 1989, she and another driver’s wife, Roseina Brabham, started racing jet skis. To clarify, these were not the jet skis of today that you ride by sitting down. These were the incredibly unstable originals that were ridden with

the driver standing up. Beth moved up from winning the World Championship as a novice jet ski racer to compete in the professional ranks. She raced for nearly five years. Following a serious accident, Beth continued to race and ended her career sixth in the World Finals. Beth told me a story about being at a lake competing one minute and having to dock her jet ski so she could breast feed Conor the next. The helmet that Beth wore while competing said it all, “Be First or Be Last.” Beth still runs jet skis with the boys at Morse Lake. In 1999, Beth met her current husband, Doug Boles. Not surprisingly, Doug also has a passion for racing. He is the former co-owner of the Panther Racing Team and current COO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. They have one son, Carter Boles.

Beth will celebrate this Mother’s Day, as she has for as long as she can remember, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. To Beth, there is nowhere else she would rather be for Mother’s Day, or any other day for that matter. Beth remembers the days before drivers had extravagant motor homes, when the Speedway had a special day care facility under the stands for the drivers and their wives. However, this Mother’s Day will be extra special as Beth gets to watch Conor attempt to pass his rookie orientation-driving test on his way to making the field for the 97th Indianapolis 500. Clearly, Beth is not oblivious to the dangers of racing. She has experienced the danger first-hand. She was in Las Vegas when close friend, Dan Weldon, was killed. Even her son Conor, although uninjured, was in an awful crash in Monaco while driving the GP3 series last year. Conor’s accident was so violent that it received millions

of hits on YouTube. Although she did not attend the race in which Conor crashed, she was forced to watch her son crash on video. She admits that upon watching the video she cried and then decided to fly to Spain to be with her son for his next race.

Beth, because she is a racer at heart and she has a strong faith in God, understands and accepts these dangers in a way that most of us never could. So when you see young Conor Daly driving around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month at speeds that would terrify most mothers, you will know what his mother’s biggest worry is.

Beth Boles holding her son Conor Daly’s hand moments before the start of a race.

Fashion in the fast lane Beth Boles and Megan Kristloff are co-chairing a charity event called “Fashion in the Fast Lane” May 23th from 10 AM - 12 AM at the East Chalet at the IMS. The proceeds of the event go to the Indy Family Foundation an organization to support those in need in the racing family. For more details, go to IndyFamilyFoundation.com. MAY 2013

BARTHULY IRRIGATION: A BUSINESS OF BROTHERS | Neil Lucas Brothers Larry and Ken Barthuly have been operating their business, Barthuly Irrigation, Inc., together for 21 years. The business’ beginnings can be traced back to a summer job Ken got in the eighth grade while living in New Hampshire. The Barthuly’s father wanted to instill a strong work ethic in his sons and therefore demanded that his youngest son Ken get a job at an early age. Ken, while “technically” underage, got a job working in the landscaping/irrigation department for the Anheuser Busch plant in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Shortly thereafter, Ken helped Larry to get a summer job in the same irrigation department with the King of Beers. The boys spent several summers working at various irrigation companies. Following graduation from Purdue University, Larry got a job in the insurance industry where he worked for six years.

22

Zionsville_May_2013.indd 22

While Larry was working in the insurance business, Ken followed Larry to Purdue. In the summer of Ken’s senior year at Purdue, the brothers agreed to install an irrigation system in their parent’s newly purchased house in Crown Point, Indiana. Larry, still working in insurance, went to the office that next week and told one of his co-workers that he and his brother had just finished installing an irrigation system at their parent’s house. The co-worker asked if they would do the same at her house in Carmel. While doing the installation at the co-worker’s house, her neighbors started to stop by and ask Ken and Larry for a quote to install a system at their house. This experience gave the brothers the belief that they could start their own irrigation business. Ken said he and Larry made it a goal to have their own business in order to have some control of their future. Both of the Barthuly brothers watched as their Father’s career, a pilot flying private aircraft for large corporations, was constantly

subject to the whims of corporate management. Their Father’s profession required the Barthuly’s to move frequently. In starting the business, the brothers had little to no resources and no building from which to operate, except for Larry’s one bedroom apartment at Pickwick Farms. Each night the brothers would carry the materials they needed for the next day’s job up to Larry’s apartment, including 20’ pieces of PVC pipe, for fear that they would be stolen otherwise. Ken said he can still remember sitting in Larry’s apartment having a beer at the end of a long day with piles of PVC pipe under his feet. By providing quality service at reasonable prices with a personal touch, their irrigation business grew quickly. As the business grew, they progressed from working out of Larry’s apartment, to working out of his house, to ultimately, in 2000, building their own facility at their current Zionsville’s location on 106th street. Three years ago they expanded beyond the Indianapolis market when they bought an existing irrigation business in Lafayette. The work ethic instilled in them by their Father and the technical expertise that they developed in those summer jobs in the irrigation business gave the Brothers the tools they needed to build Barthuly Irrigation into one of the largest irrigation companies in the state of Indiana According to Ken and Larry, the future of irrigation will be directed toward water conservation because it is inevitable that water regulations will become more stringent and water more expensive. To meet the future, Barthuly Irrigation is one of the few companies to be recognized as Certified Landscape

Ken and Larry Barthuly

Irrigation Auditors (“CLIA”) in the state of Indiana. Not surprisingly, Barthuly Irrigation offers an array of water saving devises, some of which are relatively inexpensive. For example, Barthuly Irrigation offers a rain sensor that can be installed on your home irrigation system for only $228 that shuts off your system when it is raining and restarts it when the rain is over. How many times have we driven down the street in a blinding rain and seen someone’s sprinkler wasting both water and money.

Tips on hiring an irrigation company: • Before getting a quote, make sure the contractor actually comes to your home to check your water pressure, the sun/shade relationship in your yard, water tap location, your preferred location for the water controller and where the best place to “hide” the green valve box. • Ask if the contractor can complete the job where there is a risk of encountering tree roots during installation. Some contractors will give you a quote but will either refuse to do a job or will increase the price once they discover the presence of tree roots. • Does the price include the cost of a permit • Make sure the water coverage plan is designed so that the amount of water going on the turf is different from your plantings (trees, shrubs, etc.). They each have different water requirements. • Because there are no licensing requirements for irrigation specialists in Indiana, make sure they are bonded and insured but most of all BUYER BEWARE!!!

| Neal Moore hose of us smitten by the Indy 500 have come to expect certain traditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on race day: the singing of Back Home Again in Indiana, the balloon release, and the call to Start Your Engines. There’s another, equally embedded tradition that is celebrating its golden anniversary this year – an organization that traces its roots, not surprisingly, to Tony Hulman: The Gordon Pipers.

T

In 1962, Indianapolis veterinarian Dr. Wallace Gordon Diehl founded the Scottish-inspired parade unit after a split from the Murat Highlanders pipe band. At the time, the Highlanders required members to be male and more than six-feet-two inches in height. Desiring a more inclusive option, Diehl and four other Highlanders defected to create an opportunity for their daughters and short-of-stature sons to march in a pipe band. Casting about for a moniker, they settled on founder Doc Diehl’s middle name and became the Gordon Pipers. IMS patriarch Tony Hulman saw them perform at a car show and was impressed by the crowd they’d drawn. “Everybody loved ’em!” according to Doug Hardwick, the current president of the Gordon Pipers. Hulman invited the troupe to perform at the 1963 Indy 500 and at that year’s Victory Banquet,

he vowed that as long as his family owned the Speedway, the Gordon Pipers would be a featured attraction. Thus was born the Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers. A not-for-profit organization, the Gordon Pipers have a $40,000 budget funded by performance fees from patrons like IMS, the Indianapolis Colts (as the Horseshoe Pipes and Drums), numerous parades in Indiana, and beyond. “We’re ambassadors for the Indy 500 and the City of Indianapolis,” explained Hardwick. Their reach is international, too, having marched in Scotland and Canada. “Some of us are talking about traveling to Afghanistan to play for the American troops there,” shared Hardwick. In 1968, Connie Summers began as a Gordon dancer, then added bagpipes to her repertoire the following year. Her daughter, Melissa Whybrew, began performing at age three and a half and is now the dance sergeant and a tenor drummer. “I was born into the band and grew up in it,” said Whybrew. “Now, I have a four-month-old son and he’s destined to be a Piper.” Summers, who once fell during a performance (“I’ve never forgotten that!”), noted there are several children and grandchildren of current members who are Gordon Pipers. “Doug and I grew up together,” reminisced Summers. “The band is very much a close-knit family.”

So you’d like to be a Gordon Piper? Well, first you’ll learn their songs by blowing into a chanter. Resembling a wooden recorder (or the Flutophone you squawked on in elementary school), the chanter has several finger holes and is used to play the melody. Next, you’ll learn to manipulate the air bag for consistent sound, followed by marching lessons. Within a year, you’ll be performing in parades. Outfitting the pipers, drummers, and dancers costs about $2,000 per person. No one is paid to perform – the reward comes with travel opportunities.

Expert investment management for portfolios of $500,000 or more.

Band members range in age from 13 to 60 years, and membership hovers around 40 people. “It’s a diverse group including doctors, a retired Marine, police officers – it’s an amazing mix of people,” marveled Hardwick. Extras are necessary because players rotate in and out as their schedules permit. “People have faith, family, and jobs,” said Hardwick, who’s always interested in new members. The band offers instructional classes every three months or so. “Potential pipers have to commit to weekly practices. We like young players, but several recent additions have been age 50 or more. A 72-year-old drummer just retired.” 317-261-1900

“I like the opportunities that being a Gordon Piper has opened up,” said Laura Hudgins. “We just played at the Florida Indycar race, and it was fun seeing the race and being next to the drivers.”

SOMETHING SPECIAL AT BUTLER’S PANTRY Story & Photos | JJ Kaplan What’s a quick and easy way to add something special to your kitchen? Of course, we envision new appliances, countertops, flooring, and perhaps lighting. Kitchens are an integral part of our homes, where relationships and memories are nurtured. So naturally we want the area to be warm and inviting. But what is a quick, easy, and INEXPENSIVE way to add something special to your kitchen? The answer lies at Butler’s Pantry located at 213 South Main Street in downtown Zionsville. Sandy Rogers had the vision almost twenty years ago to open a gourmet food and kitchen shop. Butler’s Pantry is considered the first kitchen store in Indianapolis, and people would come for miles around to shop for unique specialty items. Today, Butler’s Pantry prides itself as a table top store with home décor, appealing to clients who enjoy entertaining and cooking. Because people tend to utilize the same dinnerware from season to season, it is relatively inexpensive to freshen a kitchen with new table linens, napkins, candles, dish towels, pillows, and knickknacks. In addition to offering décor to update your kitchen and powder room, Sandy also carries an assortment of unique items, perfect for teacher appreciation and hostess gifts. From decorative matches with matching tapers, to napkins 28

and dishtowels, to cheese ball and lemonade mixes, to oneof-a-kind Bridge sets, you will find that perfect something for someone special in your life. Sandy also proudly displays her town spirit by offering a wide variety of Zionsville products, including aprons, dish towels, tote bags, and napkins. In particular, the iconic Zionsville wine bottle stopper is adorned with green crystals and charms of a gazebo, the initial “Z,” and a silver eagle…an absolutely perfect gift to welcome someone our community! I was especially impressed with her line of upscale Tuscanystyled melamine dinnerware and acrylic glassware. It is difficult to discern that these are not expensive ceramic plates from Italy and the wine glasses of the finest crystal. Melamine and acrylic are perfect for the poolside, holiday parties and backyard get-togethers, when glassware and paper plates really won’t do. At the core of Sandy’s business model is her approach of excellent, personalized service. In addition to a bridal registry, she offers complimentary gift wrap, recipes, and table scape classes, which my friends and I recently attended. She believes that big-box stores fall short of the level of customer satisfaction that she can easily provide. An integral part of Butler’s Pantry’s success is a wonderful staff, which includes Becky Wykes, Tanya Davis, and Marisha Kuehl.

I invited my bookclub friends to join me in a tablescape class taught by Jim Holland of McNamara’s Florist. Jim entertained us with his vast knowledge of botanicals and decorating, utilizing his quick sense of wit and wisdom. Jim illustrated how to combine table linens with various accessories, often suggesting using something in an unconventional manner.

“Summer Tablescaping” on May 7,th followed by “Wine Parties” on June 11th. Classes will be filled to capacity, so reserve your seat early by calling 317-733-8003.

Jim also suggested hosting themed parties for your next event. For example, pearls could be a central part of a theme. Toss a few strands on the center of your tablecloth and use pearl encrusted napkin rings around your linen napkins. Your invitation could then suggest that your guests wear pearls to your event. Have fun with your theme and encourage guest involvement.

So the next time you are looking for a “special” something for that special “someone,” visit Butler’s Pantry. Maybe that “special someone” is you.

I actually found myself getting the giggles, as this class was so much fun! And, quite frequently, Jim mentioned that if your own garden doesn’t have the appropriate flowers, you might visit your neighbor’s yard and “borrow” something. And he offered that when you are out gathering flowers next door, you should take your dog as an alibi for being in their yard…just be sure to hide your clippers! We all thoroughly enjoyed our tablescape class and left inspired to add some spice to our own kitchens and how to host a memorable party. Upcoming classes include

Adam Wood

Driving to Be A Champion | Ray Compton . Photos | JJ Kaplan In his still brief tenure as a resident of Zionsville, 17-yearold Adam Wood has left impressive marks with his athletic and musical endeavors. He skillfully played quarterback on Zionsville youth football teams. He was a talented point guard on community-based AAU basketball teams. And to demonstrate that he was gifted beyond athletic competition, Wood played the violin superbly in the Zionsville Middle School Orchestra. But those moments of youthful greatness may only be the beginning chapters in the notoriety that Wood achieves in his budding life. You see, the Zionsville High School junior someday soon plans to be matching drives, chip shots, and putts with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, and others on the PGA Tour. “My passion is to play professional golf,” said Wood, as he briefly paused during a personal workout at the Golf Club of Indiana on a chilly April afternoon. “I want to be walking up to the 18th hole at Augusta.” And this dream of playing in the Masters and other PGA stops may just happen. Wood was ranked No.5 among junior golfers at the close of the 2012 season. Among his glistening showings was

winning the 95th Western Junior at the Village of Golf in Florida. Wood won by four strokes. He also made a big decision last year. Though only a sophomore, Wood chose Duke as his next stop in education and golf grooming. Official college visits included Georgia Tech, Stanford, UCLA, and Alabama – all with premier NCAA golf programs. Coach Jamie Green’s Blue Devils are consistently ranked in the elite NCAA college teams. “I think I can play as a freshman,” assessed Wood, the only recruit in the 2014 Duke class. “But only five guys make the travel squad, and you are constantly competing for a spot. The seniors will have played the course hundreds of times, but the year in school is not the deciding factor. Your skills are the key.” Those betting on Wood to be successful in the warmer climates of North Carolina are two of his biggest admirers and tutors. One is Steve Simmons, head coach of the Eagles. “Coach Green loves Adam,” said Simmons. “He really likes two things about Adam. He wanted someone from the Midwest who is not bothered by the weather and who can handle things when the weather gets difficult. And, secondly, he likes the fact that Adam is the same if he shoots three birdies in a row or has three straight bogeys. Coach likes that Adam understands that golf can turn quickly.” MAY 2013

Adam with his Father and Golf Coach Dan Wood

That lesson was probably spurred by another supporter who was based in the Adam camp. Father Dan has been coaching his son since he introduced the clubs to Adam at the age of three. “We recognized early that Adam had the aptitude to play golf well,” said the elder Wood, a patent attorney for Eli Lilly. “He was athletic and wanted to learn the sport.” His son’s desire to learn golf dispatched the Terre Haute native to his personal Golf 101 classroom. Dan’s personal playing days were limited, playing the game mostly with an older brother while in college at Rose-Hulman. Wood scoured bookstores to secure books on improving swing techniques and other critical components of the challenging game. And he and son watched countless golf shows to improve his son’s budding game. “I was a teaching amateur,” admitted Dan, who estimates he has read 20 books on honing golf skills. “But we decided early on we wanted to get Adam started in the game. We learned as much as possible.” The first big indication that son was learning correctly was 32 zionsville c o m m u n i t y n e w s l e t t e r | m a y 2 0 1 3 Zionsville_May_2013.indd 32

when Adam won the U.S. Kids State Golf Championship at age 8. He collected the title three straight years. “He’s been a phenomenal coach,” Adam said of his father. “I trust him, and there are so many benefits having him coach me. He knows my tendencies and can immediately fix any problems that I may have. I can go to him when I need help, and I don’t have to set up a lesson.” Both father and son confide there may be times when they encounter the same challenges that all teenagers and parents endure. Sometimes the two parties may be on different wavelengths. “He has pushed me, but I have loved the challenge,” said Adam, whose mother Kris, a teacher and assistant principal at an Indianapolis grade school, organizes travel plans for the family tournament jaunts throughout the United States. “There is a balance. Golf is the one peaceful place that we can go together as a family. I have the best parents any kid can have.” There are other companions on this journey for Wood. There is his 13-year-old brother Andrew, who grew seven inches

4/29/2013 1:00:38 PM

last year and packs a bigger frame than his older brother. His stock is rising in the 13- to 14-years-old rankings. Andrew’s mentor is also his father, who has been buffing some new elements for the second son with major potential. “You learn that no two players are alike,” Dan Wood said.

Questions for golfer Adam Wood

There are others on the Adam Wood circuit. He also has friends and teammates on this year’s Zionsville team. The Eagles are among the contenders for a state high school championship. After finishing fourth during Wood’s freshman season, many thought Zionsville could pocket the title in 2012. Instead, the Eagles finished 16th.

Q What is your assessment of the Golf Club

But an experienced group returns to the links this spring. Besides Wood, there are seniors Will Dixon and Clark Mattison. Coach Simmons noted that two juniors, Clark Tiller and Trent Pancake, are potential college players.

of Indiana (the home course of Zionsville High School and where he once shot a 65, one shot short of tying the course record)? A “I love this place. I have been playing here since I was 11. I still kick myself on getting a bogey on the 65.”

“We have to gain some confidence,” said Simmons. “Ten years ago, you had a chance to win state if you had just three good players. Now, you need one outstanding player and three others to play well to have a shot.”

Q How many holes in one have you scored? A “Two. I was 8 the first time and 11 the

All admit that last year’s state tournament struggle has weighed on the Eagles. “We are all business,” said Adam. “The team is taking motivation from last year. I would love to win the individual championship, but winning the team state championship would be so cool.” For Wood personally, the upcoming spring and summer seasons will allow him to continue to better his game. “I hit the ball straight, and I am consistent off the tees,” Wood said. “It would help if I can add some distance, but you can become too enamored with distance. You can’t lose sight of accuracy. I can improve on a lot of my game. You can’t perfect the game.” Adam is off to a solid start this spring by being the individual medalist at the Bob Spacey Invitational that included eighteen local high school teams. However, Simmons believes his No.1 player has a very good possibility to leave his mark at Zionsville. “Adam just doesn’t make mistakes,” Simmons said. “He can leave a legacy.” Adam has already begun to create that legacy by recently being named as one of the four players to comprise Team USA in the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup to be held this June in Japan. And that footprint can be at Zionsville, Duke, and maybe someday on the PGA Tour. Ray Compton is a former journalist and longtime sports marketing person.

second time. I didn’t see that one. I guess the ball hopped into the hole.”

Q How do you control your emotions when

you play golf? A “It is a frustrating game, but you are hurting yourself and not helping yourself when you show emotions. My dad refers to Spock on Star Trek. Even when you play well, you don’t want to get too excited.”

Q What do you and your Zionsville teammates

do for entertainment? A “We play basketball and we get a bunch of televisions and play X-Box.”

Q How often do you play golf? A “I have a club in my hands 365 days a year.

We have a net in the basement, and I can work on my swing when the weather is bad.”

Q Have you watched the movie Caddyshack? A “Many times. It’s great.” may 2013

hat is the average number of children per family in the United States? The average number of children has been slowly declining, from 7 in 1800, 3.8 in 1900, 2.3 in 1960, and just below the replacement rate of 1.9 in 2010 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But no matter where you look in history, the average pales in comparison with a remarkable woman who opened her heart to twenty children. Here is the story of Dianne Miller. With a two-year-old son and another baby on the way, Dianne Miller was a busy wife and mother. Even though her own mother didn’t teach her how to cook, clean, or run a household, Dianne quickly learned the ropes and felt that she had a full and comprehensive life. She worked full time in the office of her local hospital, so organization became her middle name. Life was good. Life was hectic. Life was complete. Or so she thought…. One day at the hospital, a young couple awaited the birth of their newborn baby. They already had a two-yearold son that they couldn’t care for. It was obvious to Dianne that the toddler boy had been tossed aside to many caregivers, as he wasn’t nervous to talk with her at the hospital. The couple didn’t have any supplies for their newborn or the bare necessities for their toddler. They had absolutely nothing. Dianne’s heart broke with compassion for this little boy. Even though Dianne didn’t know the young couple, she offered to take their little boy home for a couple days so that they could bond with their baby and not worry about their son. She didn’t even ask her husband if she could bring home another child. She just did it. She knew that the little boy needed her, and she was there for him.

The boy’s parents didn’t know Dianne from Adam, yet they agreed to let her take their son home for the weekend. The boy was a model child, and Dianne knew that he needed to go back to a family that couldn’t properly care for him. On Monday morning, she returned the boy to his parents. But not before she had the realization that “I can do this.” Dianne’s heart was forever changed with a limitless love of children. She became a foster parent and continued to make a difference in the lives of many more children. Dianne gave birth to her own daughter, and yet fostered two siblings for a couple years. She later adopted them into her family. Dianne decided to open a licensed day care so that she could stay at home with her own children and support her family financially. On any given day, she was responsible for eight to thirteen children, between her own and her customers’ children. Foster care approached her again with the need for taking care of teenagers. At separate times, she brought three teens into her family and nurtured them through their turbulent periods. They eventually went back to live with their parents. But even these teens became part of Dianne’s heart as she opened her home to them.

clearing the table, to washing the dishes, to drying the dishes, each and every person had a job for a week, and the family needed to function together in order to survive. Eventually, she remarried a man with two children and she became pregnant with their new baby together. Life was good, and they couldn’t wait for their new baby girl’s arrival. They even had a name, Ronda, selected months before her due date. They were one big happy family waiting on their little bundle of joy to arrive. But life had another twist in store for Dianne. Her husband died unexpectedly of a heart attack seven weeks before her baby girl arrived. She drove herself to the hospital for the delivery and learned to cope with being a widow with five children plus a newborn. Her children all knew that they needed each other to survive. So they worked together to manage the garden and household. Dianne realized that she had to be the glue to keep the family healthy for the sake of her newborn daughter. She didn’t want to “lose that baby” and

During these years, Dianne’s marriage began to unravel and she found herself a single mom with five children. She relied upon her brothers’ help for housing, grew her own food, raised chickens for food and eggs, and treated everyone with fairness and love. Her family became a cohesive unit of worker bees, with each child having a weekly chore. From setting the table, to

Ronda, her daughter, called to offer even more insight of her relationship with her mother, who is her best friend. Ronda expanded upon Dianne’s philosophy of always putting others first and her never-ending positive outlook on life. When Ronda has a bad day, she calls her mom who somehow puts a band-aid on the situation. By the end of the call, Ronda doesn’t recall why she was upset in the first place, as Dianne magically puts everything into proper perspective and makes everything okay. In Ronda’s eyes, her mom is one of the most intelligent and creative people she knows. And when they go out on the town, even outside the Zionsville area, people constantly stop to chat with Dianne. She remembers their names and stories and encourages them along the way! Today, Dianne works at Marsh Supermarket at Boone Village; and her effervescent smile radiates from behind the cash register. She enjoys drawing and reading in her spare time. She also crochets little “somethings” for her favorite children who come through

Dianne opened her home and heart to twenty biological, step, foster, and adopted children. She proudly claims twenty grandchildren today, with a great grandson now and a great granddaughter on the way. But three of her children do not have children yet. So she is hopeful for even more grandchildren some day.

I asked Dianne to share parenting tips for us all. She told me that she took her family to church every Sunday. She also believes that people should connect to their children by reading to them, playing board games, going on bike rides, no TV in the bedrooms, saying bedtime prayers, and loving

sk Kelly Maucere, owner of My Sugar Pie, about her favorite childhood memory and it would be learning to bake homemade pies as a little girl in her mother’s kitchen. Holidays and get-togethers all centered around the family and the almost-lost-art of baking pies from scratch. From measuring and mixing to rolling out the pie crust, this mother and daughter created much more than a tantalizing dessert. They were creating memories and a recipe for success. Because of the strong work ethic and sense of honesty instilled by her parents, Kelly learned not only how to be a wonderful pie baker, but also a savvy business woman. Her mother and father challenged, nurtured, and supported Kelly all her life. To this day, her mother drives almost 2 hours to Zionsville to help Kelly in the kitchen during her busy holiday and summer season. the corner, it’s likely that you will encounter her mother’s smiling face behind the counter. Kelly’s mom is the creator of approximately 75% of the pie recipes at My Sugar Pie. “Mom’s Original” Dutch Apple Pie is usually the #1 favorite. But there is another pie that has earned special recognition, too. Country Living Magazine hosted a contest to find the nation’s most delicious mail-order pies. Kelly submitted her Sugar Cream Pie, which is the Indiana State Pie (by the way), and it was voted one of the Top 10 pies in the country. There are many days when her Sugar Cream Pie outsells “Mom’s Original” Dutch Apple Pie, so the two flavors volley for most popular. Third on the list is her mouthwatering Cherry Pie. Initially selling pies at the Farmer’s Market in Zionsville, Kelly used the kitchen at Cobblestone Grill to hone her craft. After three years of successfully selling pies at the Farmer’s Market, many of her friends suggested that she open a full-time pie shop. In 2011, that dream became a reality when she opened My Sugar Pie at 40 E. Pine Street in downtown Zionsville. Her company’s name is the term of endearment that her mother calls Kelly’s two little boys. Her grandsons are the “Sugar Pies” in her life!

Cobblestone Grill, St. Elmo’s Steak House, Harry & Izzy’s, and the Omni Severin. In addition, the store ships nationwide to the continental United States. Visitors even come from out of state to sit down and enjoy a slice of pie at her shop. My Sugar Pie also heavily supports local charity events, such as Zionsville Relay for Life, ZCS, and Habitat for Humanity. Giving back is a rewarding part of Kelly’s community involvement. So the next time that you need a moment to relax and reflect, stop in My Sugar Pie for a slice or whole pie to sweeten your day.
