here is an organization for every cause under the sun. Whether it’s the Red Cross stepping in during disasters, or the United Way funding a wide variety of charities. Maybe it’s an organization that raises money to fund research to find a cure for a specific disease. There is certainly

no shortage of causes to which you can donate your money. They are all great organizations, but what if you want your gift to stay in your community and go exactly where you want it to go – now and even after you are gone? Well, that is possible through the

Community Foundation of Boone County (CFBC) which has been quietly going about its business of handing out millions of dollars in grants and scholarships and making the community a better place for more than 20 years now. Community Foundation currently holds around $20 million dollars in endowed assets and has handed out almost $18 million to the community since it awarded its first grant in 1992. The Community Foundation is basically a collection of charitable funds – about 200 in all – set up by individuals, families, businesses and organizations who want to make a positive difference in the local community.

Decisions MaDe LocaLLy. By soMeone you trust. At the National Bank of Indianapolis, local decision making is an important part of our reputation for

Jen Pendleton, who is a Zionsville resident and the new executive director of the CFBC, said that one of the great things about giving to the Community Foundation is that you help other causes by giving to them. “Whether it’s supporting your family’s favorite cause or helping us address Boone County’s most urgent needs, our goal is to help individuals, families and organizations become philanthropic for the long term. Our core is endowment which means that your donation is invested and the interest is awarded to your favorite causes forever,” she explained.

superior service. We’re proud to be the Indianapolis area’s largest locally owned national bank, and one of few places where your private banker has the authority to make prompt, personalized decisions that help you meet your goals. So when you call Regina Laux at 261-0244, you’re not just calling your banker. You’re calling the person you can trust to make the right decisions for your financial future.

Another big advantage according to Jen is that the funds stay in our community. “I also think that we are unique in a time when people are longing to buy local and support local business and markets. The Community Foundation of Boone County is a great way for our residents to give local and support causes close to home, and to the organizations that help make our community strong. Just like our tagline says, we encourage people to “make a difference, make it here,” she added.

One Zionsville family that has done that is the Easterday family. Tom and Deb have been involved with the Community Foundation since the late 1990s. Tom was the president of the Zionsville Town Council and also a CFBC board member for many years. Deb sought and received a grant from the CFBC when she needed help getting a not-for-profit organization started that was dedicated to helping families with children with disabilities. Their positive interaction with the Community Foundation led them to set up the Easterday Family Fund in 2004. The purpose of the fund is to enhance the quality of life for the poor, underprivileged and disabled of Indiana, especially those that live in Boone County. “We have been involved with many charitable organizations such as Special Olympics, ARC of Boone County,

Boy Scouts and others that work with individuals with disabilities and underprivileged youth, so we recognize that several organizations have needs that can be met through a fund established for that purpose. We believe the Easterday Family Fund is another effective way for us to give back to our community,” according to the Easterdays. As an example of what the Community Foundation has done, Tom points to the hundreds of Boone County students who may not have been able to go to college without the scholarship they received from the Community Foundation. “I recall a former executive director of the Zionsville Boys & Girls Club telling me a few years ago that it would not have been able to meet its monthly obligations at that time had it not received a grant from a CFBC fund. “Several local charitable organizations

your

were facing challenges during the recession and may not have survived without funding from a special initiative at the Community Foundation,” Tom continued. “A very recent example is a reading program for adults with disabilities in Boone County that was started in 2012 with a grant from the Community Foundation. Clearly, the Community Foundation plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents of Boone County,” he added. Tom emphasized that The Community Foundation is aware of the needs in the community, has the unique ability to address multiple areas of need at the same time, and can bring together a variety of organizations to collaborate on important projects and initiatives. To that end, Jen said she just completed an A-Z Listening Tour of the county, visiting everywhere from Advance to Zionsville to learn more about the needs of each community. She added she is

still listening. “I want to hear first-hand from our residents on what they feel the Community Foundation’s role should be and how we can best address the different needs. Even though the tour is over, I’m still looking to talk to as many people and organizations as possible, so I encourage any Boone County residents to give me call. I’d love to hear what they have to say!” If you’ve been looking for a way to give back to your community and to continue giving back long after you are gone, or perhaps you want to honor a loved one by setting up a fund that supports their favorite charitable cause, you might want to consider looking into the Community Foundation of Boone County. It is also a powerful way to pass on the importance of philanthropy to future generations. You can visit them in their office at 60 E. ark Moreland, owner and personal trainer at Body Outfitters, believes three key factors dictate exercise success. “Consistency, hard work, and accountability,” he said. It’s these components that have led to an explosion in small group training, and the reason why Body Outfitters has added an additional 1,000 square feet of workout space. Moreland, a lifelong resident of Zionsville and 1996 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, opened Body Outfitters in 2010 as a way to give back to the community where he was born and raised. “Body Outfitters allows me to positively influence and help the overall health of the community,” he said during a recent interview. The business, located in the Village on Cedar Street, is a place for Zionsville residents to focus on fitness. Moreland and his staff provide half-hour and one hour, one-onone and small group training opportunities designed to help individuals reach their health and wellness goals. Most people come in for strength training and weight management, though the Body Outfitters staff is always adapting based on each person’s unique needs. A trend has developed and customers are looking to leverage the fellowship of exercising together. “Group strength training workouts are part of the changing fitness landscape,” Moreland said. “The benefits are that you still get much of the individual training and one-on-one attention, but in a group setting, which provides more accountability but is a less expensive workout.” Small groups are formed around people’s similar schedules, goals, and fitness levels. “What’s great about these groups,” said Moreland, “is the way they develop their own personas. The group of women who come in at 5:30 in the morning are different from those that arrive at 6:00 in the evening. Communities have grown from within these groups. They give themselves group names and even have t-shirts printed.

“When your days are full

of toddlers, getting in the gym and doing some good old bench press makes me feel strong, alive, and healthy.” | Laura M.

“High energy,

feeling strong, and connecting with other people for support and motivation.“ | Jocelyn S.

By working hard – laboring, struggling, and, ultimately, succeeding together – a common bond is created.” Moreland said some groups come in together but that’s unique. “Usually a couple of people establish a group time, and then others jump in. While we encourage group members to commit to a time slot so they work with the same trainer and group consistently, there is the option to move between groups if the need arises in their schedules,” he explained. To ensure members experience the full value of the group session, Body Outfitters maintains a ratio of one trainer for every four participants. “We’ve found that’s a strong proportion to ensure each person gets the attention they need within their group experience.” Though the trends in the fitness industry are constantly changing, Moreland said the core tenets of exercise and wellness remain. “We adhere to the concepts of baseline physiology. It still comes down to hard work, appropriate nutrition, and rest.” Body Outfitters offers new customers a free Fitness Consultation and two free workouts to get started.

It can also claim as one of its own a Colts cheerleader, Cristina C., now in her second year with the NFL team. Cristina’s extensive background and passion for dance seems to make her a natural to be a Colts cheerleader. Cristina describes it as her “full-time hobby”. Cristina is the daughter of Raphael and Mildred C. She moved to Zionsville when she was seven years old from Puerto Rico, a move required due to her father’s job relocation. Not surprising, Cristina is fluent in Spanish and hopes to utilize her language skills with the Colts, and also looks for bilingual opportunities in Zionsville. The Colts have a military tour in South America planned for later in the year in which Cristina hopes to participate. Although Cristina spent most of her life in Zionsville, she graduated from Cathedral High School. While at Cathedral, she was a cheerleader, participated in three dance teams and started the Latin-American Dance Team. She also participated in track as a sprinter. After graduating from Cathedral, Cristina went to Purdue University where she was a member of university’s ballroom dance team and Delta Zeta sorority. Since graduating from Purdue, she has been employed as the director of recruitment and development for a national financial services company. A common adage with respect to the NFL is that, “There is no longer an off-season.” While that clearly applies to players and executives, it is also true of the 26 women chosen to be Colts cheerleaders. Their year begins soon after the Colt’s season ends in January. In February, prospective candidates hoping to make the next year’s squad begins preparing for the auditions held in March. All members of the Colts cheerleaders are required to go through the tryout process every year, irrespective of whether you were a

cheerleader in the prior year. The final audition showcase is in April and that year’s squad is chosen shortly thereafter. Practice for the new squad beginnings in May with the intensity of practice picking up steam in June and July. In addition to practice, there are weekly conditioning workouts required, and 25-30 personal appearances throughout the year. The typical game day routine for a Colt’s cheerleader begins around 6:30 a.m. It starts with an extended on-field rehearsal at Lucas Oil Stadium followed by a light meal and a round of hair and makeup. Next up, are various appearances around the stadium, including some in the tailgating areas outside. With a 1:00 p.m. kickoff, Cristinia’s long day as a Colts cheerleader, which included around 3-4 hours of dancing, is finally over around 4:30 p.m. Not unlike the players of the NFL, a cheerleading career of five to six years is considered a long career. When asked what she wanted to do when her career as a Colt’s cheerleader is over, Cristinia said she would like to be able to settle down in Zionsville and start a family with her new husband, Matt. Congratulations to Cristina and Matt who were married on August 3rd. Look for Zionsville’s Cristina C. on the Colt’s sidelines this season.

T

he personal collegiate football resumé for Blake Lueders already is overflowing with glowing experiences. There was the quarterback sack he recorded as a freshman against Colorado. There was the visit to South Bend to play Notre Dame; the trips to the Orange, Fiesta and Rose Bowls; and the heart-stopping, triple overtime, nationally televised win over conference rival Southern California in the legendary Coliseum in Los Angeles. And not to be forgotten in this trail of highlights were the moments of being recruited by then Stanford coach and former Indianapolis Colt quarterback Jim Harbaugh, who attended a brunch in the Lueders’ home to try and persuade Lueders to come to Palo Alto, California. 24

Indeed, all of these have been splendid memories for the football warrior from Zionsville. But one of the brightest in the football career for the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Lueders came before he arrived at Stanford and the Pacific-12 Conference. This highlight moment happened as a sophomore fullback at Zionsville High School in a game against Lafayette Harrison. The mental replay still sends chills through Lueders. “There was this one run during my sophomore year,” recalled the 2009 Zionsville graduate. “We were playing Harrison and it was a running play up the middle. I probably should have been stopped at the line of scrimmage, but I bounced off three or four different guys, did a spin move and got 11 yards.” Perhaps that one play signals most the grit, passion and competitiveness that Lueders brings to the big stage of college football at Stanford. During his entire career in youth, high school or college football, Lueders has never shown a second gear because his play is always high octane. “That’s just the way I play,” admitted Lueders. This movie started on the youth football fields in Boone County when attorneys Dan and Mary enrolled their son into the Zionsville Youth Football League. A few years later,

the second act unfolded at Zionsville High School when Blake played for longtime Eagles Coach Larry McWhorter, who previously coached Dan at Pike High School. The resume scripted by Lueders for the Eagles is of near epic proportion. After being named the starting fullback as a freshman, Lueders became a four-year letterman. He was a four-star performer – the highest classification — by the top national recruiting services (ESPN, Rivals and Scout); was projected as the 10th best defensive end prospect in the country; and was ranked No. 79 among all high school recruits in the country. After selection as Indiana’s Mr. Football in 2009, Lueders was chosen to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. The robust Hoosier was a national name in collegiate football circles. Yes, football. “Zionsville has a darned good football program,” said Lueders, who also performed at a high level for the Eagles on the basketball court. “Indiana players can compete against anybody.” College recruiters agreed. Among those pursuing Lueders were Boston College, Iowa, Northwestern, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and the home state trio of Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame.

First and 10 Questions with former Zionsville high school football standout Blake Lueders, now a key component for fourth-ranked Stanford.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

What is your fondest memory playing youth football in Zionsville? The friendships that I made playing pee-wee football are still a part of me. Those guys are still my friends today. We had a great time playing youth football. What was the toughest moment of your playing days at Zionsville High School? We were never able to beat Hamilton Southeastern. It seems like we always got close but they would pull it out in the end. What has been the best highlight at Stanford? I hope that my best highlight is still to come but it was great to play against Southern Cal two years ago. It was (ESPN) College Game Day, Saturday Night, nationally televised and we won in triple overtime. It was cool. Do you have one favorite story about playing with Andrew Luck? (Luck and Lueders were teammates in 2010 and 2011.) He is an all-around impressive person. He works extremely hard and is an amazing leader. Where would you like to be in five years? That’s a tough question. I would like to be in the NFL or working on my MBA. Do you collect autographs? I have an autographed jersey of Dick Butkus (NFL Hall of Famer) in my room. I wish I could have seen him play. What impressed you when then Coach Jim Harbaugh came to your home in Zionsville and recruited you for Stanford? (Lueders had previously verbally committed to Notre Dame.) Honestly, he didn’t have to say anything. Stanford sells itself. What are your thoughts about the unconventional and sometimes controversial Stanford marching band? (The band is named as the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band and has been billed as the World’s Largest Rock and Roll Band. The band is one-of-a-kind. They are unique. But I am very proud that they are our band.

Was your father (Dan) a football player? He played at Pike. He was a rugby player at Northwestern. Are you still a Colts fan? Absolutely! september 2013

After verbally committing to Notre Dame, Lueders reversed directions and settled on Stanford and Harbaugh. “Stanford sells itself,” recalled Lueders. Perhaps the only hardship for the Lueders family has been the distance from Zionsville to the San Francisco area. Parents and sister, Grace, (a talented freshman graphic design student at Miami of Ohio who last year produced a recruiting highlight video on Zionsville football player John Naumcheff) have missed some football Saturdays on the west coast. “We go to as many games as we can,” said Dan, a patent attorney for Indianapolis law firm Woodard, Emhardt, Moriarity, McNett and Henry, who represents the another football powerhouse, the University of Florida, in their partnership with Gatorade. “[The games are] kind of like the opening of the Charles Dickens’ novel A Tale of Two Cities with the phrase ‘it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.’ Big time college football is so exciting. But also it’s your kid out there in a meat grinder of 310 pound maniacs. It is a blast but it also is very stressful for Mary and me as parents.”

“I am going to do whatever I can to do to compete for a starting spot,” said Lueders on a recent visit to the Hoosier homeland. “You have to give it your all because we have tremendous depth. We have so many good players.” During the summer Lueders participated in aggressive workouts. Time in the weight room has turned out impressive readings: he can squat 450 pounds; power lift 370 pounds; and power clean 320 pounds. Lueders has also turned in impressive numbers in the other part of being a student-athlete at Stanford, which has produced football legends John Elway, Jim Plunkett and Andrew Luck. He boasts a grade point average of 3.4 in engineering school and will graduate in June, 2014. Courses have included Financial Analysis, Technology Entrepreneurship, Differential Equations, Stochastic Modeling, Probabilistic Analysis and Physics. And, off-seasons have not always been in the weight room and Cardinal workout facility. Lueders has completed internships with a Silicon Valley private equity firm and with another Silicon Valley asset investment and management company.

The 2013 campaign figures to be a big one for Lueders, who is competing for a starting outside But next up on the calendar is the linebacker slot. After being a football season and Stanford’s key contributor to the Cardinal pursuit of playing for a national special teams as a freshman and championship in Pasadena in sophomore, Lueders missed the January, 2014. The season opens entire 2012 season with a shoulder September 7 against San Jose injury that required seasonState. The schedule includes a ending surgery. However, the Blake Leuders with his Mom Mary home game with Notre Dame and red-shirt season may have been a Leuders after Notre Dame game. conference confrontations with blessing. “It was tough sitting out Southern Cal, UCLA, Oregon and a whole season,” said Lueders, neighborhood rival California. whose shoulder problems were leftovers from wear and tear during his high school and college careers of ramming The Zionsville linebacker is armed and ready for battle. shoulders into charging offensive giants. “But the time out “Our goal is win the Pac-12 and defend our conference also enabled me to really appreciate the game of football. title,” Lueders said. “And then maybe we can go to Physically, I am in the best shape that I have been in.” Pasadena and play in the national championship.” Lueders expects season-long internal competition for playing time for the Stanford defensive team. The fourthranked Cardinal defense has a roster brimming with top high school recruits and all-American caliber players. Stanford greets three all-Americans returning on a defensive unit that led the Pac-12 in total defense, rushing defensive, quarterback sacks and scoring defense. Two of those touted returnees are linebackers Shayne Skov and Trent Murphy. 28

Adorned with colorful banners, shutters, flowers, wallpaper, weathervane, and a token gnome (named Larry the Librarian), you can’t help but take a peek inside. There you will find an assortment of books to read at your leisure. When you are done you can return it, or replace it with another, or keep the book and “give it forward” in some other way down the road. This is just one example of a growing community movement around the United States and in at least 36 countries. 30

The Little Free Library, 125 North Main Street, is the brainchild of the Gorman family. Prolific readers themselves, Courtney and Scott were inspired by a Little Free Library in Portland, Oregon. They believed that our little community would welcome the concept and decided to display a library in their front yard. The Gorman’s initially stocked the little library with a variety of quality books with wide appeal. From there, neighbors stop by and take whatever catches their interest. The concept is that when you are finished, you return and bring other books that may appeal to your community. There is never a

due date or late fee. The goal is simply to inspire a love of reading, kindness, and community sharing. The Gorman’s have incorporated the love of reading with their own children. Grey and Ruby, both under age four, are enjoying a home with lots of books and very little television. Instead, Courtney and Scott have instilled the love of reading and adventure in their children, finding immense joy in feeding them with a passion for learning and exploring. Courtney and Scott enjoy taking their children on adventures to various creeks, parks, and picnics, and seek to make every day one of wonderment.

Grey and Ruby have become avid peoplewatchers, as they sit on their front porch bed swing reading their favorite books. Little Free Library is a movement started by Todd Bol and Nick Brooks in 2009. Their mission is to promote literacy and a love of reading; foster a sense of community and connection; and build more than 2,510 libraries around the world (the number of “real” libraries built by Andrew Carnegie.) The Give-It-Forward message of The Little Free Library is what really inspires Courtney. She hopes it encourages adults and children alike to do just that, in whatever form speaks to them. If that happens to be more libraries specializing in various subjects such as travel or cooking, all the better. Courtney’s library primarily specializes in heartwarming children’s books. The sky’s the limit when it comes to creating a theme for your own Little Free Library.

In the same spirit of giving, Courtney dreams of participating in a Little Free Farmstand, where all of our village neighbors with home gardens leave surplus vegetables and fruits to share with one another.

little notes of appreciation, new quality books, the joy of seeing others embrace reading and giving, and her children participating in and witnessing it all. Her own life has been warmed by her simple gift of giving that resulted in unexpected blessings. Perhaps, we could all learn a lesson from the Gormans. Isn’t the act of giving something we all should embrace? What can you offer to your community? It is exciting to think about where we all would be if everyone just gave a little of their talent. Think about it. Then G.I.V.E. it forward.

Courtney and Scott initially thought creating the Little Free Library was a way to give back to a community that had been so wonderful to them. Today, however, they see it as an even bigger gift to their family as they reap rewards beyond her imagination. She receives

intage-inspired, French, shabby chic, cottage, industrial, European – it’s hard to pigeon-hole the decorative style of ReStyled, 21 S. Rangeline Rd, Carmel. If you like any of those styles, you’re sure to feel very comfortable in the store, which features a myriad of accessories and painted furniture pieces. Looking for a unique focal point for your otherwise ho-hum room? You’ll likely find it here. Back in 2010 Connie Oderkirk, an interior decorator for 25 years, realized that her 165-year old historic home could not hold any more furniture, yet she still enjoyed shopping at auctions, flea markets and estate sales. Meanwhile, her daughter-in-law Sasha Hostetter was also enjoying those same sales and also painting and repurposing pieces, so they decided to go into business together. “We want to inspire people,” commented Connie. “We are such a throw-away society; we want people to realize they can have a beautiful home that is affordable with repurposed or restyled pieces.” “And,” chimed in Sasha, “you can add a uniqueness to your home, as well.”

like the palace of Versailles. Of course, mixing colors creates a nearly infinite number of other options. Once a piece is painted, a protective coat of wax is applied which also adds to the patina of the piece. Suddenly Grandma’s old buffet is a gorgeous updated piece that you can proudly place in your entryway. If you have furniture to update or restyle, register for a workshop on “Chalk Paint® Essentials” or “Refunk Your Junk” and you can actually work on your piece in-store. Some people have even brought kitchen cabinets, to get started on new ways to update the finish. In addition, ReStyled occasionally takes in custom work for those who are not the DIY type. If you can’t make it into the store, be inspired by their Pinterest boards at ‘ReStyledPaint’ or their website. And, mark your calendar for October 10-12 for their Barn Sale, an outdoor vintage and antique marketplace in Westfield. The sale features 20+ juried vendors that complement everything ReStyled does. Visit www.ReStyledBarnSale.com for details. Kathi Moore, a career marketer and public relations director, has a natural curiosity that leads her in many different directions and helps to provide ideas for her writing. She and her husband have 3 children, 3 dogs and 3 cats.

Soon the pair was introduced to Chalk Paint®, a brand of decorative paint developed by Annie Sloan which is sold only in small local shops. Today, they are one of just four retailers in the state who carry it. “We were already painting and repurposing furniture,” said Sasha. “We can do so much more with this paint. It can’t be beat for durability, beauty of the finish and ease of use.” Thanks to Pinterest, many DIYers are familiar with Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint®. It is made in the US, is water-based, has a low VOC and is easily cleaned with soap and water. It is fast-drying and has bonding agents for a hard, durable finish and beautiful patina. Most popular is the fact that you don’t prime or sand the piece before painting it! There really is an Annie Sloan, and ReStyled also sells her decorating books. Reflecting on the Last Years | Janelle Moorison

The town of Zionsville has attracted a variety of small business proprietors over the last four decades. The Town has overcome many challenges and changing economic landscapes during these years. In 1973, Richard Nixon had just been elected to a second term as president. The Vietnam War was officially ended with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords. The United States was in the beginning of a recession that would last until 1975 – the most severe economic downturn since World War II. In New York, the first mobile cellular phone call was completed. October 16, 1973, OPEC declared an oil embargo, unilaterally raising posted prices by seventeen percent to $3.65 per barrel, and announced cuts in oil production – actions that led to the Oil Crisis. Amidst the grim financial atmosphere that faced the nation, the quiet, rural town of Zionsville was a growing and welcoming climate for new businesses and artists such as Jewel Box Jewelers and Casalini Portraits. Today, the Town has grown to a population of more than 14,160 (2010 census) supported by several mature and new neighborhoods and a growing business community, giving JBJ and Casalini Portraits a reason to keep their established businesses in the heart of Zionsville.

ewel Box Jewelers opened for business October 3, 1973. For nearly 29 it was Zionville’s only jewelry store. Phillip Owens, principal owner of Jewel Box Jewelers, was one of the first businesses to sign a lease and open his doors in Boone Village. At that time, the town was mostly rural and in the midst of a building boom that would transform the quiet little bedroom community. Before opening his jewelry store, Owens left his place of employment in Wisconsin and moved to Indiana. He spent some time riding along side his brother, Victor Owens, who was in carpet sales. Soon, the two brothers began selling costume jewelry to boutiques and beauty salons. Owens decided that he wanted to open a jewelry store and a permanent location in the town of Zionsville. His original location, at Boone Village, was in the space that houses Papa Murphy’s today. As business grew, he moved to the east side of the complex in what is currently, Brunchies. In 1984, Owens had an opportunity to move his store to

Main Street when the location at 100 South Main Street became available. Owens rented the space from the owner, Don Spees, until Spees retired and then Owens purchased the building where he has been for the last 29 years. According to Owens, Main Street was vibrant and booming in the 1980s. The economy was headed towards a state of recovery under a new presidential administration. There was a diverse mix of businesses and retailers on Main Street. “Zionsville definitely had a variety of businesses,” Owens said. “There was more diversity amongst the retailers than what we have today. It was a good time to open a business, and to be in business as there was a lot of discretionary income. That was also before the internet and customers shopping online.” Owens has followed his industry’s financial and other trends over the decades. Thick, nugget-style jewelry was popular in the 1970s. He noted that people brought in scrap jewelry to cast into chunky pieces of jewelry rather than to sell it for money. For many decades, yellow gold was the preferred metal until the new millennium. Turquoise became popular in the 1980s and Owens became one of the only jewelers in the greater metropolitan area to specialize in the repair of turquoise jewelry for customers and other jewelers. september 2013

custom designs. JBJ has its own proprietary watch line that is made with Swiss parts and is one of the only to be assembled in the United States.

Semi precious stones, jade and quartz were trendy in the 1990s. The jewelry industry saw a change of preference from yellow to white gold and platinum settings, primarily with engagement rings and wedding bands, in the 2000s. In the years following the Great Recession, that hit the nation hard in December of 2007 and took a particularly sharp downturn in 2008, the price of gold hit an all-time high in September of 2011. Gold reached $1,921 per troy ounce and people began selling their gold and scrap gold. Jewel Box Jewelers became one of the many jewelry stores who advertised, “We buy gold”. His adaptation to the ebb and flow of the market and customer demand has been essential in Owens’s business model.

The introduction and prevalence of internet sales has presented the most recent challenge for JBJ and others in the industry. “Our walk-in business has been hit by the internet and has certainly affected the way we do business,” Owens said. “We strive to give the best service that we can, quick repairs and to stay ahead of the curve with the current styles. We attend the jewelry show in Las Vegas, which is the largest in the world, and we hand pick the best of the lines. In cases such as Officina Bernardi, an Italian sterling silver line, and LaFonn, one of the fastest selling lines in the country, these lines are exclusive to our store within a 50-mile radius.”

As the years progressed, Owens expanded his inventory and his staff. His wife, Regina, is co-owner of the company and his brother, Victor Owens, has been with JBJ for nearly 20 years. Until recently, Victor was the only “in-house” bench jeweler in the general area. Owens hired his current store manager, Gale Sammons Welch, in August of 2001. In total, Jewel Box Jewelers employs three full-time and two part-time employees. For several years, they were the only jewelry store that had a full-time jeweler on-site.

Owens has selected these designers specifically for their affordability and high quality appeal. The sterling silver lines are platinum bonded or rhodium plated for longevity at a price point that attracts today’s buyers. JBJ is a designated retailer for the nationally renowned designer line, Simon G, who is most popular for its bridal and artisan jewelry. Looking ahead to the future, Owens emphasized the importance of maintaining its level of exceptional service,

and that selling is secondary to the firm’s philosophy. “We teach our staff not to push, but to help our customers,” Owens explained. “Our goal is to answer their questions but not overload them with information, and for us to build a relationship with our customers.” While Owens predicts there will be fewer independent jewelers in the future – because it takes a substantial amount of capital, time to establish an inventory and the obvious competition from the internet – he believes that the existing and future jewelers will remain relevant if they focus on their service and provide unique lines at a variety of price points. When asked what it means to be celebrating 40 years of business in the same town, Owens replied reflectively. “I never expected to be in business here for 40 years when I first opened,” Owens said. “It’s really nice when you look back on all the relationships that you’ve made and that they keep coming back to you after 40 years. It’s incredibly rewarding and it doesn’t happen in every line of business.”

Prior to the opening of The Fashion Mall at Keystone at the Crossing, a popular shopping complex located on the north side of Indianapolis, the town of Zionsville was the place to go for high-end boutique shopping, eclectic art galleries and unique restaurants. “Zionsville was absolutely phenomenal back then,” Casalini recalled. “The mix of retail stores that we had here was amazing. We had a hardware and a grocery store on Main Street. There were great little restaurants and artists everywhere. The community energy here was incredible.” Popular retailers and restaurants brought in the necessary traffic to support the local artists and galleries. “Laurie-Landis had merchandise that was extremely unique to Indianapolis. They were a driving force to the clientele that came into Zionsville, a very high-end clientele. Everything in town was done at a really high level and the result was that it brought in traffic. That certainly helped build businesses here.” There was a good mix of incomes and ages from a residential demographic standpoint that supported the local businesses and restaurants. Casalini pointed out that the “village” of Zionsville had a different energy back then. “In my 40 years of experience, what is transpiring now in downtown Zionsville is the closest that the ‘village’ has been to the energy of the early 1970s through the early 1980s.”

Tom Casalini A Portrait of 40 Years on Main Street Tom Casalini, photographer and owner of Casalini Portraits, opened his studio in late summer of 1973. His original location was above Laurie-Landis Ltd. and the Green Apple Restaurant, currently the Cobblestone Grill. Casalini believed that Zionsville was the right place to open his first studio and unbeknownst to him, it would be the starting place of his illustrious 40-year career. “I moved to Zionsville from Logansport because I wanted the small town feeling,” Casalini said. “I looked at spaces in Indianapolis and I just didn’t feel that any of them were right for me, so I approached the people who owned the Laurie-Landis building at the time, and inquired about the space upstairs. I had a little reception area, a large room for my studio, a dark room and that was it. It was a pretty functional space.” Five years later, Casalini came back from a vacation to learn that the building had been sold and that he would need to find a new studio location. He immediately started looking at available spaces around town and found his current location at 10 1/2 North Main Street, where he has been for 35 years.

38

Over the years, Casalini continued to grow his portfolio and clientele to a national level while maintaining his portraiture work and local business from his studio in Zionsville. Early in his career, he worked solely with color portraits. He transitioned for a period of time from fine art portraiture and began working on the commercial side of photography taking on corporate projects. He developed his techniques and specialized in lifestyle photography working with commercial reps in Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles, focusing on national consumer advertising for the next 25 years. At this point in his career, Casalini wanted to have a process of giving back to the community. He came up with an idea of photographing famous Hoosiers and telling their stories through his craft. He found a printing company that sponsored a limited edition series of posters featuring his “Famous Hoosiers” series. The benefactor then, was the Indiana State Museum, who sold the signed posters at their gift shop to help raise funds for the construction of their current location. Whether working on commercial, philanthropic or personal works, Casalini has maintained the integrity of his portraiture process. He has refrained from following trendy poses and backdrops. He strictly focuses on the individuality of his clients. “My work has matured more as I have matured within the craft,” Casalini explained. I have always been extremely respectful of the craft of creating a portrait. I’ve never

followed trends in the portrait business. I’ve always looked at myself as a fine art portrait artist.” He takes his portraiture work seriously. He believes that it gives his clients an opportunity to reflect on who they really are. He helps them to express themselves internally through his process. “Through conversation, prior to having their portrait made, we build trust and within that trust is where the honesty of the subject and my work blend together”, Casalini said. “For me, it brings me great joy to help them find the beauty within themselves by virtue of my profession.” In 1999, Casalini was looking to take a sabbatical when he was asked to create a commemorative poster for the Indianapolis Power and Light Company. IPL had invited several Medal of Honor recipients to serve as 2000 Indy 500 Parade marshals. Casalini took a strong interest in the recipients and their stories. Three years later, he published, “Ordinary Heroes”, a black and white portrait collection of living recipients from all over the nation. Rekindling his passion for portraiture work, he stopped doing color work and resigned from national commercial assignments. Following his book, Casalini launched his “Indiana Artist Series” that would travel from his satellite gallery located at The Fashion Mall, to various locations throughout Indiana. This exhibit featured 17 local artists’ statements and their art. It became an educational exhibit and a crammed art appreciation course for school and college age students from across Indiana. In the last five years, Casalini has expanded his fine art series using his latest proprietary technique. Using aluminum and saturated colors, the subjects in this series are based on places and objects that he is passionate about. Scenes from Europe and Italy are tributes to the love of his Italian heritage and scenes from across the Unites States pay homage to his native country.

When asked how he plans to celebrate his anniversary, Casalini unveiled the special event that will take place honoring more than his anniversary but the heroes, artists and Hoosiers that he has worked with throughout his career. “I’ve been really blessed and wanted to express my gratitude to my clients and colleagues of the last 40 years so I reached out to the St. Vincent Foundation and asked them if there was a way that we could partner together in a community give-back project. The Foundation replied and together we will be hosting a fundraiser for The St. Vincent House. The House will be a home away from home for parents and families with children and for transplant patients at the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital.” The event will take place this November and will feature from the “Famous Hoosiers” series, Joyce DeWitt of television’s “Three’s Company”, who will be the mistress of ceremonies. Representing the “Ordinary Heroes” series, Medal of Honor recipients, Gary Latrell from Florida and Sammy Davis from Indiana will be in attendance. Mr. Davis is the only living MOH recipient in Indiana. 12 artists from Casalini’s “Indiana Artist Series” will donate their art for auction. The proceeds raised from this event will go to the St. Vincent House.

Sept. 6 - 8 | Geri Neita The Lions Club Fall Festival marks its 60th year this September. Since 1953, Zionsville families have participated in the weekend’s lively festivities, and they continue to do so. The Fall Festival has evolved and grown throughout the years, and today, brings people from much farther regions to partake of the traditions and enjoy the festivities. With 20 acres of public access, Lions Park is completely owned, operated and maintained by the Lions Club with the help of fundraising and many volunteers. Unfortunately, April rains wreaked havoc on the park this spring (a mark on the wall of a restroom in the middle of the park shows the floodline at 7ft. high), and repairs depleted the funds, so this year, the Lions Club hopes to have an especially successful event, aiming to recoup some losses and continue to make improvements. “Fall Festival is our largest fundraiser for the park,” said Leigh Ann Akard, spokesperson for the 135 member club. “We try to find something for everybody.”

Lions Park under water after spring flooding. The festival kicks off Friday, September 6th, with a VIP Carnival for individuals with special needs. These ‘Very Important People’ and their families are invited to a complimentary night of fun and activities, beginning with a Chick-Fil-A dinner, provided by Lew Leckrone, franchise owner and Zionsville resident. During

the evening participants can listen to live music in the gazebo and enjoy carnival attractions, including a bounce house, an animal petting area and unlimited carnival rides. This year, ‘Designated Riders’ (members of the Leo Club) will be available for VIPs who would like assistance on rides or with other activities. VIPs are also given ‘carnival cash’ to buy treats and play games.

ever revisiting the bidding table.” Qtego will streamline the process for the Lions Club by organizing bids and providing reports, resulting in the need for fewer volunteers in that area. “The auction money that we raise this year will go towards purchasing and installing new playground equipment in the park,” said Tim Reinhart, current president of the Lions Club and Fall Festival chairperson.

The Behavior Analysis Center for Autism (BACA), which provides services to special needs children and young adults, has sponsored the event for the past two years. “With one of our centers being in Zionsville, we look for opportunities like the VIP Carnival because it’s a perfect event for our families to enjoy an evening out in a safe and friendly environment,” said Sarah Cox, director of marketing for BACA. People of all ages look forward to this once-a-year affair, including members of Zionsville High School’s Best Buddies program, which pairs high school student volunteers with special-needs students. The VIP Carnival will be their first outing of the school year.

Some of the auction items include: vacation packages, martial arts lessons, tickets to events, photography packages, home maintenance certificates, art and sports items. The silent auction is currently underway and open for bids until 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7.

Zionsville’s Fall Festival is one of the few carnival events that continues to grow, and Poor Jack Amusements attributes that success to the addition of the VIP Carnival. In six years, it has gone from about 250 attendees to well over 1,000, some coming from as far as Illinois and Ohio. Registration for the VIP Carnival begins on Friday, September 6 at 5 p.m.; rides are free until 8 p.m. Another big deal, this year, is the silent auction. The Lions Club hopes to maximize its revenue by running the auction through Qtego, an innovative company which allows people to bid remotely by registering their mobile telephones numbers online. “Qtego is fast easy and fun,” said Jeff Stinson, regional event specialist in an email. “Text notifications sent directly to their phone allows the bidder to have up-to-the-minute bid updates and encourages additional bidding without

To participate in the silent auction and support the Lion’s Club’s activities visit www.qtego.net/auc/zlc. You can review items up for bid, register your mobile phone and start bidding. Many other activities are scheduled to take place during this anniversary year. Come out for the parade, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, explore the park, then relax in the beer garden with some live entertainment by the Reece Dickerson Band at 7 p.m. Food and beverages are available for those 21 and over. Leopalooza, a drug and alcohol free party for young adults, will also get underway at 7 p.m. See you at the 60th Fall Festival! Confessions of a Drag Racer

| Tom Britt . Photos | Asrar Burney “So, you wanna dress up as a woman and race down Main Street?” The question seemed innocent enough. My first Z’Sparkle drag race event August 9 is still bringing laughs to my friends and family. A day that had started innocently enough with a trip to Goodwill, Claire’s, and Payless Shoes, culminated in a party of outrageously dressed men (and women) running down Main St. in Zionsville. After transforming into “Aunt Flo” for the night, I have a new appreciation for womanhood. Finding a glamour dress in a size 2XL was pretty difficult. Makeup wasn’t fun. Nothing brings a guy to tears faster than an eyelash curler. And of course, the shoes. I opted to wear size 12 wedge sandles, somewhat fashionable and ankle sprain-proof. L to R: During my introduction, I had a wardrobe malfunction . Fellow dragster earns donations along Main Street . Contestants went all-out for the race . Steve Simon, the grand marshal, talks about the first drag race he participated in four years ago 44

My first stop of the evening was at Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill at Geist Reservoir. A small group of friends had gathered on the patio anxiously awaiting Aunt Flo (my drag queen name for the night). Immediately, cash was being stuffed into my top and my clutch (a small purse for you

guys that don’t know what that is.) I strolled inside to the bar and the “tipping” trend continued. Before I left, I had raised just over $100 and recruited five pit crew members to join me.

marshal, riding in a convertible instead of donning a dress. Perhaps the funniest scene of the night, and there were many, was the pregnant drag racer giving birth in the middle of the race right in front of the review stand. Of course, I captured it all on video (I don’t go anywhere without my GoPro camera.) We all finished and descended on the VIP tent for the rest of the night to celebrate our fundraising.

When we arrived, I breathed a sigh of relief after seeing some really ugly women that I quickly realized were men who were there for the drag race. We kept telling ourselves that the money was going to a great cause: the Alzheimer’s Association. A VIP tent for my crew and me awaited us, and organizers went out of their way to pamper us: Triton beers, Chef Matt Hybrich’s culinary talents, music, and most importantly, a place to sit and rest our feet.

I want to thank my friends Rachel Quade, Tom Garriott, Neil Lucas, and Tom Williams for serving as my pit crew. The Z’Sparkle organizing committee and volunteers were fabulous and made a great night even more fun. I was most impressed with the turnout and support by the sponsors, namely Zionsville Meadows and the Alzheimer’s Association. Everywhere you looked was a volunteer or someone asking if you needed anything. Great job everyone.

Trading my watch in for a bracelet, I wasn’t sure what time it was all evening. However, plenty of volunteers helped us line up for introductions by emcees Anne Ryder and Ray Cortopassi. After we were introduced, which came with it’s own side story, my drag queen friends and I paraded down Main St. soliciting donations from the hundreds of spectators who had gathered. Surprisingly there were a lot of children there, many who, I’m sure, had nightmares that evening!

Look for Aunt Flo to return next year in grander fashion. All told, I raised $492 for a great cause. For a video recap and a good laugh, visit www.atZionsville.com. One of the highlights of the night was meeting Steve Simon, the original drag racer that started this whole thing by losing a Super Bowl bet four years ago. He served as the grand
