In December 2013 Dr. Allmand, a soon to be Zionsville resident and Dr. Cleveland, a current Zionsville resident, were granted the opportunity to purchase the dental practice of Dr. Scott McDonald and Dr. Marvin Schmidt, a practice that dates back some 50 years on Indy’s north side. Having taken care of their patients for such a long time, Drs. McDonald and Schmidt did not want to turn over their patients to just anyone. After carefully evaluating possible successors for nearly a year, they decided that Dr. Allmand and Dr. Cleveland were the right dentists to take over their historic dental practice.

Dr. Cleveland graduated from the I.U. Dental School in 2007 and has been working ever since in a large private group practice where he received years of extensive training, continuing education, and experience in all areas of general dentistry. Dr. Allmand attended IU Dental School on a U.S. Air Force Scholarship. His first year in the Air Force was spent in a year-long intensive residency program The residency program was designed so that CpaAllmand would be proficient to handle a wide array of complex dental procedures and be more self-sufficient while serving in remote areas with limited access to specialty care. This training also made Dr. Allmand a perfect candidate to serve our country deployed as a dentist in

Afghanistan where he routinely performed root canals, extractions, and restorative dentistry for both American and foreign troops. He served our country for five years before entering private practice.

As a result of their combined experience, Doctors Allmand and Cleveland plan to expand the services being offered to patients to include oral surgery, root canal therapy and implant placement.

While the name of the office has changed to “Monon Family Dental” and some of the doctors treating the patients have changed, many things have stayed the same. The staff who served the office previously are the same, and Dr. Tim Carlson, a full-time instructor at the I.U. Dental School, continues as he has for the past 15 years to practice part-time at the office.

Drs. Allmand and Cleveland are breathing new life into the practice. They have updated the technology in the practice, incorporating large digital displays, intraoral cameras and digital x-rays. They feel that these improvements help educate patients on oral health. They plan to continue to implement new technologies, while carefully maintaining the things that made the practice so

successful for so many years. The next time you sip a cup of Brazil Cerrado from Julian Coffee Roasters, take a moment to really appreciate the labor of love that goes into each roasted bean.

Located in Zionsville, Julian Coffee Roasters began 10 years ago and is the product of Ken Julian’s passion for great coffee.

“There was a roaster located at 56th and Lafayette Road,” Ken said. “I’d go there and get fresh beans. It eventually went up for sale and I put an offer on it, but thankfully, I didn’t get it and I started roasting at home. I attended the national conference for coffee roasters in Atlanta in 2003 and came home with two roasters. I got a warehouse on the west side of Indy and started my roastery.

Originally, I was in medical device sales and I started roasting on the side. A little after a year from when I started the roastery, my wife and I bought Eagle Creek Coffee Company.” Eventually, all roads led him to where he is today.

Wes Kerlin, originally from Alaska, came to Indiana and started the Indy Coffee Association. He and Ken met at meetings and found that they shared a similar passion for food. “Ken made me the proverbial offer that I couldn’t refuse so I came on board,” Wes recalled. “Up to that point, I’d never worked hand-in-hand with a coffee roaster. I’ve done everything from running a coffee company with 100 employees at 6 locations, selling thousands of pounds of coffee a week, to owning my own business. I thought, this is going to be cool. Plus Ken’s a ‘foodie’ and we both like to eat.”

Ken says that he and Wes are both recovering cafe owners and that it’s a tough business. When I asked if they would consider opening another cafe in another

location, Ken replied, “We’ve just made a decision that we will not get back into that unless it’s absolutely the right situation and we can do the perfect cafe.”

Wes gave me a tour of their current facility that is soon to be bursting at the seams with an assortment of coffee beans—green coffee beans and Tanzanian pea berries. Wes explained to me what a pea berry is and how it has become quite popular in the coffee industry, only after someone had discovered that they really taste good brewed.

“Tanzanian pea berries are a mutation,” Wes stated. “The cherry in the coffee shrub typically has two halves but pea berries never form into two separate halves. The ‘bean,’ which in actuality is the seed, ends up being one small dense bean.”

The wholesale cost of beans depends on what area of the world they come from.

An example of Julian’s cost for a specialty grade from Brazil will be over $3.50 per lb.

All of their coffees are specialty grade and they will have approximately 2,000 lbs. of coffee on hand. Soon, they will increase their stock with the signing of a new agreement with Costco Wholesale that will allow them to sell Julian Coffee at their two Indianapolis locations. Adequate space for their expansion is an issue, as they will need to house additional equipment and 4x the green coffee beans as what they store now, to service all of their accounts.

They are looking at moving to a new or existing facility that will give them the 4,000 sq. ft. they will need for warehousing and possible retail space. Once they have found their utopia, they want to install the newest thing in specialty coffee for espresso machines. “The Mod Bar, which stands for modular, is the coolest and hippest new thing out there for espresso machines,”

Wes explained. “The typical espresso machine is above the counter and the mod bar, everything except for the dispenser, is below the counter, so it removes all of those barriers between the barista and the customer. It was also designed and manufactured in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Ken and Wes have a philosophy that they instill in all of their clients who resell their coffees. “We don’t just turn green beans brown,” Wes said. “We are part of a supply chain that starts with the farmers at origin, who out of everybody in the supply chain make the least money. We believe that we have a certain amount of duty to honor their efforts with what we do. A roaster or a barista can screw up good coffee and they can’t make bad coffee, good. That attitude needs to prevail all of the way down to the barista passing you your cup of coffee.”

I received a quick history from Ken, on espresso and the waves in which it came to be popular with Americans. The first wave was when the Italians brought espresso to the U.S. Then, Starbucks brought it to everybody else. The third wave is the educational process of taking specialty grade coffees, roasting them the best way possible and transferring that education to the baristas who work with the roasters to understand the coffees and the best way to prepare them. Wes added, “Ken came up with a fourth wave. The fourth wave is the third wave without a bad attitude and the pretentiousness.” For them, it’s all about respecting the whole process down to customers’ overall enjoyment of their cup of coffee.

“I love coffee,” Ken simply stated. “If I could get more wrapped into the mission part of the industry and incorporate a passion for coffee with my passion to help other people, it would be a perfect world.”

With normal consumption of three or four cups a day, studies have found the diuretic effects of coffee to be negligible. It’s only when there’s a high intake that it appears to have a diuretic effect.

COFFEE CAN CAUSE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE – MYTH

Habitual coffee drinkers have been shown to have similar blood pressure to non-coffee drinkers. However, some people who have not consumed coffee for a period of time and then start to drink coffee may experience a small, short-term rise in blood pressure.

This rise would be no greater than that experienced when engaging in active conversation or laughing.

KEEPING COFFEE IN THE REFRIGERATOR OR FREEZER WILL KEEP IT FRESH – MYTH The refrigeration or freezing of coffee produces condensation, which hastens the loss of flavor.

CAFFEINE IS ADDICTIVE – MYTH

According to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence whatsoever that caffeine use has even remotely comparable physical or social consequences to those associated with serious drugs of abuse.

COFFEE IS LIKELY TO CAUSE INSOMNIA – MYTH

Your body quickly absorbs caffeine, but it also quickly gets rid of it.

After 8-10 hours, about 75 percent of the caffeine has left your system.

COFFEE CAN HELP SOBER YOU UP – MYTH Only time can sober you up.

Nobody walks into his or her favorite café and orders two ounces of drip coffee, so you cannot compare a two-ounce espresso to drip coffee. The average drip coffee purchased in America is 16 ounces.

A 16-ounce drip coffee has 2.3 percent more caffeine on average than espresso-based drinks made with 2 ounces of espresso, or 2 shots. The reason comes down to the time in which the water is in contact with the coffee, the temperature at which it is brewed, the grind, and the volume.

I

t was a Tuesday night after a long Memorial Day weekend and I was watching television, flipping back and forth between America’s Got Talent and a baseball game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers were beating the Reds, so I spent most of my evening watching the “talent show on steroids” premier episode. That’s when a 20-something kid came out and said, “My name is Dustin’s Dojo and I’m a trained black belt and I learned to be a black belt at Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida.”

He took a bow with his silent sidekick who was wearing a ski mask “This is my friend Terry and I am his sensei,” he added, followed by a roar of laughter from the audience.

Over the course of the next five minutes I witnessed the funniest karate parody I’ve ever seen. Dustin’s Dojo put on a demonstration featuring the breaking of flimsy wood slats, 60 seconds of full-extension punches, and a face full of salt thrown into his eyes by Terry “when he least expected it.” Comedy genius was rewarded with a golden buzzer save by judge Howard Stern, which allowed them to go to the next round in New York this July.

I rewound the skit, watched it with my wife several times, and posted a link of the clip on my Facebook wall the following morning, noting, “This was the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time.”

Then something magical happened. One of my Facebook friends left a comment that Terry Terry was his wife’s cousin from the Indy area. These guys are locals? I had to meet them.

So we headed west with a carload of people: our trusty videographer Mitch Jacki, and magazine designers and fans Alyssa Sander and Austin Vance. Our rendezvous spot was in Covington, Indiana at the famous Beef House Restaurant in their back parking lot.

From there, Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry took us to two of their training locations in Fountain County: The “snake pit” and the “road that leads down to the river.”

Dustin’s Dojo, donning his WWE Santino Marella t-shirt, treated us to an on-camera, in-character interview. He told us about his karate inspirations, being bullied in 3rd grade and roundhouse kicking his nemesis in the ear, the ever-presence of attackers and what they would do with the $1 million grand prize should they win America’s Got Talent. “We would build the Roger Baker Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida, Fountain County.”

was doing auditions in Indianapolis, they came up with these two characters and fleshed out the skit on the drive over to the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

“We were in character all day long,” said Britton. “The producers didn’t know what to think of us. At the end of the day, I broke down and laughed when he questioned my ‘world record’ for full extension punches thrown in 60 seconds.

The entire room erupted.”

Their act is like watching Napoleon Dynamite trying to understudy Bruce Lee. Dustin’s Dojo speaks loudly, as if you’ll believe him if he says it with pronounced authority. Terry Terry, whose name is a spoof on local horror movie host Sammy Terry, looks around aimlessly, trying to spot attackers. “Only locals would get the Sammy Terry reference,” Kent said with a laugh.

With their newfound fame, Britton has created a website at DustinsDojo.com where he posts exercise videos, karate demonstrations and merchandise including a “Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida” t-shirt.

As for America’s Got Talent, the two will be making their second-round appearance sometime in July. Be sure to watch on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. for their New York debut.

RANJ PUTHRAN “HELPING HANDS AWARD” RECIPIENT BRETT SEACH Our Helping Hands Award winner for July is Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Brett Seach, a Zionsville resident. He, along with fellow IMPD Officer Kurt Spivey, have been instrumental in organizing the “911 Slugfest”, a boxing competition benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The “911 Slugfest” is an event in which local firefighters take on local law enforcement officers in three round bouts, with bragging rights at stake.

The 911 Slugfest began in 2002 and through the years have raised nearly $100,000 for the Make- A- Wish Foundation. This year’s event will be held on November 15th at the Tyndall Armory.

Dining at Home for Women in Need

“Come on in! It’s good to see you,” Liz Qua says as she opens her front door and welcomes women into her home. “You can set your dish there on the island,” she continues as she nods in that direction. Liz is hosting a meeting of Dining for Women, a national organization that promotes economic sustainability, education, and medical care for women in poverty around the globe. A bountiful buffet appears in her kitchen as guests carry in colorful garden salads, fresh fruit and vegetable trays, warm homemade muffins, a spicy chicken and potato curry, and a specialty pie from a local bakery.

This is one of many Dining for Women dinners that Liz has hosted during the past two years. Encouraged by her sister in California, Liz launched the Zionsville chapter of Dining for Women in April 2012. Her sister participates in a San Jose chapter and has even served on the national governing board. Based on what she learned from her sister, Liz felt the program was worth bringing to Central Indiana. “We want all people to live with dignity, respect, and freedom from abuse,” Liz says.

“Dining for Women is an easy way to help women around the world who face difficulties we can hardly imagine.”

Like other chapters around the country, this group meets for pitchin dinners at a member’s home once a month. After sharing a meal, they learn about a particular need in a particular country and find out what Dining for Women is doing to address that need. When they leave for the evening, members have the opportunity to donate to the cause. Giving is discreet and entirely optional. Most women give approximately what they would have spent if they had gone out to eat.

“Pick one night a month and eat in, and all the money you would have spent at a restaurant goes to a cause,” says member Amy Langford. “I love the concept. It’s so simple and easy.” Amy joined the group shortly after moving to Indiana from Texas when she read about it in a local paper. She contacted Liz about joining and has participated ever since.

Close to 30 women have joined the Zionsville chapter, and 10 to 20 typically come to each meeting. As Susan Hyten says, “It’s not a requirement to be here every month. If you can only come twice a year, that’s great. Each meeting is an opportunity to learn and contribute.” Membership is still open, and women are encouraged to bring a friend.

As the group finishes eating, one of the women heads to the living room to set up a video. Everyone follows, sitting on the sofas and pulling up chairs to form a loose circle. Karen Dzurisin, who has volunteered to be the presenter this night, is about to introduce the charity of the month: the HOPE Foundation for Women and Children in Bangladesh.

The mood changes from convivial to concerned as Karen confides that reading about the women served by this foundation brought tears to her eyes. She explains that Dining for Women has selected this organization as the featured charity for May 2014. The foundation will receive $45,000 to support its work with needy women and children in Bangladesh. One of the special needs it will address is obstetric fistula, a medical condition resulting from obstructed labor. Women with this condition are often abandoned and left to live in isolation.

The HOPE Foundation finds women suffering from this, educates them about what can be done, and provides them with medical care that can heal their bodies and allow them to reintegrate into society.

Karen admits that it’s tough to hear their stories. Nonetheless, she likes participating in Dining for Women: “It lets me learn so much, increase my awareness, and lift these women up in prayer.”

Before showing a short video about the foundation, Karen asks each woman to share what community means to her. Heartfelt stories reverberate as several women express how deeply they feel a sense of community in Zionsville. They tell stories of neighbors, churches, families, work settings, and volunteer groups that surround them with support. They talk about friendship, hardship, and walking through good times and bad times together. Some members are more private; a few are still seeking a true sense of connection. Most who have lived here a few years say how blessed they feel to be here.

workers who had done the same thing. Cofounder Barbara Collins, a friend and neighbor of Marsha’s, worked with her to develop the idea. They established an official nonprofit organization a year later.

During the following months, the group saw an explosion of growth as national media ran stories about the concept and its success.

Karen leads the discussion back to the topic for the evening by saying how rare the gift of community is for many of the women served by the HOPE Foundation. “I intentionally wanted to set the stage with hope and the blessings of community, because this video is hard to watch and it breaks my heart. But what Liz is doing and what we are doing as a group is great, because it offers hope and the possibility of community for them.”

Dining for Women began in 2003 when Marsha Wallace of Greenville, South Carolina, decided to have some friends over for dinner on her birthday. She asked them to bring a dish and donate the money they would have spent at a restaurant to needy women.

Now, a little more than 10 years later, Dining for Women has hundreds of chapters all over the country and has raised more than $3.25 million. The Zionsville chapter, one of three in Indiana, has raised more than $6,000. As Hilary Clinton has said, “The efforts that Dining for Women have undertaken…all across the country over the past 10 years, provide a powerful example of how individual acts of giving, when aggregated, can make a deep and transformational impact.”

As important as the fundraising is, members attest that local meetings are about much more than money. Members open their hearts as they open their purses. Meetings provide opportunities to learn about the world, look poverty in the face, and realize that it’s possible to make a difference.

Some members, like Karen and Liz, accept a leadership role by volunteering to present information on the monthly grant winners.

Cheryl Kussow led and hosted the June meeting. It focused on the Tanzania Nursing Scholarship Program, which will allow

25 young women in Tanzania to become registered nurses and registered midwives. Cheryl led the discussion of the connection between healthcare and education and showed a video of several young women in crisp pink dresses who explained how receiving a scholarship to attend nursing school is helping them grow in confidence, support their siblings and parents, and fill a critical need in their rural communities.

Just as individual chapters are small and localized, so are most of the organizations that receive grants. “Several of the charities they support are fairly new,” Lisa Donoho observes. “It’s neat that these groups can get a start. These grants help them get on their feet and off the ground.”

The maximum size of a Dining for Women grant is $45,000, usually payable over two years. Dozens of groups apply to the national board for funding. Twelve are selected each year. Grant recipients are not affiliated with any specific religious or political group. Countries highlighted in 2014, in addition to Bangladesh and Tanzania, include Vietnam, Kenya, Nepal, and the Dominican Republic.

To further a sense of cultural connection, Dining for Women compiles recipes from the communities it serves. Before each meeting, Liz emails these recipes to the members. Invariably, a few adventurous cooks make some of these dishes and bring them to the meetings; Kathy Blake brought flavorful Tanzanian shrimp to the latest meeting.

Dining for Women focuses on teaching skills that women can use to improve their economic futures while assisting their local communities. As member Laura Yates says, “We’re not just giving them money, we’re teaching them to do things themselves. And as Liz has often told us, when you educate the women, you educate their sons and daughters, too.”

Sometimes presenters plan games as a way to learn more about the geography and culture of the region receiving assistance. Amid laughter and friendly competition, the group played a Jeopardy-style game to learn about agricultural practices being taught to women in western Africa. For a program supporting a school in Afghanistan, members broke into teams and had a quick contest to see who could label the most countries on a blank map of the Middle East. “It was a bit humbling,” members admit with a smile.

Regarding his first trip to southern France as a 19-year-old from Indiana, Carver McGriff remembered the sandy beaches, the ocean waters and the abundance of hedgerows sprouting from the French soil. And he still vividly recalls the chilling sight of a dead American soldier lying on Omaha Beach.

“That’s when I knew the war was real,” McGriff remembered 70 years later from his home in Zionsville. “There was no turning back.”

Certainly McGriff was not alone in that frightening deduction as he participated firsthand in the world’s largest amphibious military invasion: D-Day in June 1944 at Normandy. Overall, over 850,000 Allied troops landed on the French beachhead in the summer of 1944 to launch the ground assault against Nazi Germany during World War II in Europe. History shows that 11 months later, German zealot Adolph Hitler had committed suicide and the Nazis would surrender after their empire was battered from border to border by the Allied coalition.

The Greatest Generation had closed the book on one war.

Nowadays, McGriff annually returns to France in a much different setting. Since 2010, he and wife Marianne have accompanied a travel group of 40-50 as part of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Normandy trip. Organizer Bob Zehr is already planning a fifth trip for August 2015. And he already has the 89-year-old McGriff ticketed for the voyage.

“While seeing Normandy alone can be inspirational,” said Zehr, owner of the Oak Hill Mansion in Carmel, “many people have said that traveling with Carver has made it a trip of a lifetime. Carver is able to relate both the history of the war and his personal history in such a way that people feel they are actually experiencing much of what happened 70 years ago. Carver creates an opportunity for them to feel a very personal connection.”

McGriff, pastor at St. Luke’s for 26 years, has scripted his war story into the book Making Sense of Normandy: A Young Man’s Journey of Faith and War. His personal history included being wounded in his arms and legs during his first month of combat in France, and soon afterward becoming a German prisoner of war for approximately a month.

“There are no words to adequately describe the terror of war when you are under machine-gun or artillery fire,” McGriff told the authors of The Memories of Those Who Were There. “You visualize each incoming round, thinking it might hit you…(you) experience the ultimate feelings of fear, isolation and helplessness.”

But the American teenager also learned another lesson during his time as a POW. “The German kids were just like us,” he assessed.

“They had friends and families waiting for them back home.”

The compassion demonstrated by the enemy soldiers resonates seven decades later for McGriff. “They (the Germans) were good to me,” he said. “I was one of very few Americans held but I was able to bond in a way with the Germans.”

The Germans also provided the needed medical care. Now, in some ways, McGriff repays his capturers when he returns to Normandy and visits the nearby cemeteries. He asks his tour partners to pray for both the fallen American and German soldiers at the massive cemeteries (approximately 10,000 graves in the U.S. cemetery and a staggering 30,000 in the German counterpart).

“I ask each of them to go into the American cemetery, pick out a cross and then say a prayer for that soldier,” McGriff related. “I tell everyone that it has been a long time since someone has said a prayer for him. But then I also ask them to do the same thing for a German boy. God loves them as much as he does us.”

That sharing of emotions has not been lost on his 200 travelmates in the last four years. “Carver is a very patriotic person but he doesn’t take sides on the trip,” said Chuck Sawyer, a retired Eli Lilly executive whose father served in France. “He doesn’t attack the Germans in any way. It’s like God has given him a mission in dealing with the War.”

Zehr noted that McGriff has uncovered a way “for the travelers to share in the deep appreciation and admiration for what that generation was able to accomplish against great odds.”

But McGriff slightly alters each episode with his focus and comments. For instance, he shared with others in June that he wanted to find the restaurant in which he was held prisoner by the Germans. He asked for assistance in receiving divine intervention on the message. Eventually he, Marianne and another couple received help from the natives and discovered the site.

“He adds to the experience each time he goes,” said Sawyer. “It is not a canned delivery. He always has that twinkle in his eye when he talks.” Sawyer continued by noting, “Carver is an extremely humble man, although to me his is an icon.”

In the most recent return to Normandy, McGriff and mates were part of the worldwide 70th anniversary celebration of D-Day. Among the visitors were numerous world leaders, including Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and Prince Charles, who were part of the festivities at Omaha Beach. The celebration also included honoring the heroes who landed at Utah and Sword Beaches.

It was another humbling moment for the onetime soldier who, upon his stateside return, received his college degree from Butler and a religious degree from the Garrett Theology Seminary. “I can’t say a lot about the spiritual meaning of fighting,” McGriff remarked. “But the war helped make me a certain kind of person. I understand what it means to be afraid and to have other emotions.

The war and fighting taught me a lot of things about life.”

During each return to Normandy, he relives a rerun of that day in June 1944. Is it an emotional journal? “Not in an unpleasant way,” McGriff said. “It is kind of like seeing a movie that I have seen.”

But, recently, there was new footage added to the film. One of Marianne and Carver’s daughters, Sarah, a 1999 graduate of Zionsville High School, moved to Berlin. She married a German and now has two children. The old soldier has now seen the full circle of life and war. He has two German-American grandchildren.

A FEW QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WITH CARVER MCGRIFF How touched were you on receiving the French Legion of Honor medal?

“Only in the sense that I represent 400,000 young men who died in the war and never came home. I represent those who did not come home and served honorable lives.”

What did you think of the movie, Saving Private Ryan?

“From a public relations standpoint, it was a very exciting movie. In the movie it seemed that Omaha Beach was maybe 300 or 400 yards wide—but it was several miles wide (approximately 50 miles from one end to the other.)”

Why do you make the annual pilgrimage to Normandy?

“For those boys who died there. They deserve to be remembered today.”

What feelings do you have for the soldiers who returned from Vietnam and did not always receive favorable responses from their home-country citizens?

“The Vietnam veterans got a bad rap. The ones who went should have been treated better.”

After you were rescued as a prisoner of war, what did you do during the remaining days of World War II? “Because of my injuries, I was classified to limited service only.

I went to London and worked in a post office until December 1945.”

What did you do after you graduated from Butler?

“I had a business, but I was totally lost. That was when I felt I had the call to go into ministry.”

What message did you deliver during last month’s Flag What amazes you most about the American soldiers in World Day celebration in Zionsville?

War II? “I told the young people that I wanted them to become “The average age was only 20 ½.” the greatest generation.”

“It is like walking into a church. You whisper. There is kind of a code to be very quiet.”

“Each year I say it is going to be my last one. But then more people want to go.”

any locals have heard him discuss sports strategies over the airwaves, and have seen him on the ball fields assisting the local little league teams, but some may not know that Bill Stanczykiewicz, Zionsville resident, develops programs for Indiana’s youth. Bill, president and CEO for the Indiana Youth Institute, grew up in Chicago in a blue-collar family. He completed his undergraduate degree in journalism at Northwestern and became a producer in a radio station in the Windy City before accepting a job in Anderson, Indiana covering sports in Indianapolis, and high school sports from around Madison County.

He met and married his wife of 22 years, Carmen, through a mutual friend at church.

Carmen is currently a Worship Production Minister for Traders Point Christian Church. The two have four children, Will, Gracen, Eléna and Sam. “After we were married, I took a network job in Washington, DC, in sportscasting,” Bill said. “I got ‘Potomac Fever’ and started working on my master’s in public administration with a concentration on nonprofit management from George Mason University.

He became the chairman for a subcommittee on children and families. “I basically looked at data and research and effective practices related to youth and community development,” he explained, “I went from reporting baseball scores and basketball strategies to looking at data and strategies that benefit children and youth.

Bill and his wife moved back to Indiana and Bill was hired by former Mayor Steve Goldsmith before his path led him to the Indiana Youth Institute, where he has been since November of 1998. Bill and Carmen

moved to Zionsville for Lions Park and the school system. “I’ve been a volunteer for the Zionsville Little League, was the board president for three years and a volunteer manager for 11 years,” Bill said. “I served a term on the Community Foundation board and am currently serving on the local school board for Zionsville.”

Professionally, Bill is as dedicated to Indiana youth as he is personally. “What kids need most are caring adults who are passionately committed to their very existence,” he explained. “It starts with the parents. Parents are uniquely influential and uniquely responsible for raising their

Bill and his staff of 35 support 10,000 youth-serving professionals throughout Indiana. “Teachers, school counselors, summer camps, youth ministries—anybody working with children, is our ‘customer,’” he said. “We help them with their individual professional development and strengthen the organizations where they work.

Additionally, there are one-year offerings through credentialing programs they can take advantage of. Recently, Lebanon announced that a Vincennes University advanced manufacturing training facility is coming to their area in 2015. It will be the first training facility in the northern part of Indiana.

“Indiana has a wonderful legacy in two large segments of the economy,” Bill explained. “One is manufacturing.

Indiana built America after WWII and we’re proud of that. To this day, Indiana has the highest percentage of its work force in manufacturing— more than any other state—making up 20 percent, though it’s a different manufacturing sector now. Nobody uses a wrench to make anything in Indiana. It’s all computerized and it’s all technology. You need a 2-year degree oftentimes to get that highpaying job.”

He explained that the other strong economic segment is agriculture.

“We’re still feeding the world here in Indiana,” Bill stated. “We’re one of the largest agriculture states, in one of the largest agriculture countries in the world, but it’s not your grandfather’s farm anymore. There’s technology on the tractors and you need to be aware of the global economy. You need to keep up with seed developments and using satellites and computers on the tractors to measure which part of the land has the best yield. You don’t have to go to a 4-year school but you do need something after high school.”

He emphasized that a 1-year credential for something like digital manufacturing or a 2-year associate degree to get into advanced manufacturing or agriculture will increase a youth’s chances in the modern 21st century economy.

Bill spoke about the global view of the Indiana Youth Institute. “While we’re providing services to youth-serving professionals around the state, we’re trying to get information out to the

general public,” he said. “Parents, raise your kids. We need to volunteer and mentor kids. We need to make kids aware of all of their career and academic opportunities beyond the traditional 4-year college route.”

Part of IYI’s training involves a statewide conference where they offer workshops and a keynote speaker.

This year’s speaker will be Leigh Anne Tuohy, whose family was depicted in the popular film, The Blind Side. Bill felt that Sandra Bullock’s portrayal of her may have been a little bit understated. “She is that electric of a personality and that outgoing of a person,” he exclaimed. “From her family’s story, she encourages people to get involved with their families and to get involved in their communities.”

INDIANA’S NEW SECOND CHANCE LAW Writer / Mario Massillamany

We all make mistakes in our youth.

Sometimes even as adults. Luckily for us, the Indiana General Assembly just revised the expungement laws (Indiana Code 35-5-5.5 and 35-38-8, 9) to give Hoosiers a second chance. The Legislature understood that old arrests and convictions can prevent you from getting a job, renting an apartment, serving in the military, or participating in service groups. Known as the “Second Chance Law,” the new law allows for sealing arrest records and expunging certain convictions.

SEALING PRIOR ARRESTS

Sometimes a person will get arrested but the charges will be dismissed due to mistaken identity, not committing the crime, or lack of evidence. But those arrests still appear in that person’s record. Under the new law, if you were arrested but never convicted of the crime charged, you can have the arrest sealed one year later. This can be vital for future employment, as the arrest will not appear in a background check, nor would you need to disclose the arrest on a job application.

EXPUNGING YOUR RECORD

If you were convicted of a misdemeanor or Class D Felony that was reduced to a misdemeanor (AMS), you can petition the court for an expungement five years after the conviction. For D Felony convictions that did not result in a bodily injury, the waiting period is eight years from the date of conviction.

Just beyond the patio gate that welcomes guests of the Cobblestone Grill, there is a little staircase that leads to a door to the second floor of 140 ½ South Main Street in Zionsville. Many guests have noticed the steps and inquired whether there is a business up there, and if so, what do they do?

The average passerby may not realize that housed on the second floor of the Wright Family’s building is a service company that unites children with their adoptive families.

ABL (A Bond of Life) Adoptions has been creating families through domestic adoptions for the last 10 years and is headquartered in downtown Zionsville.

Tina Klinkose-Kyler, founder of ABL Adoptions, has an additional location in Mandeville, Louisiana. Tina has personally gone through the adoption process along with her husband, Steve, three times after multiple attempts at in vitro fertilization.

“Once I realized that I couldn’t have

natural-born children and did the whole infertility route, we looked at adoption,” Tina said. “Adoption was a comfortable option for us. We have several family members who have adopted, so it wasn’t any big deal.”

Tina described the moment when she realized she wanted to be an adoption facilitator. “We went through the adoption route and we chose a domestic adoption,” she explained. “After going through the process and having the experience of talking with different birth mothers, I just knew that this was something I wanted to do. After we got home with Gavin, the agency wanted me to talk at a seminar they were hosting. The agency had local seminars and wanted adoptive families with new babies to come and speak. I went and during that seminar, I was able to educate people on the adoption process and was giving them hope. Just because you can’t physically have babies doesn’t mean you can’t be a mom or a dad. I started out doing seminars and then it snowballed and soon put everything in place for me to start my agency. Indiana laws changed and

the state was eliminating facilitators and requiring me to become a licensed agency.

It was a process.” In addition to Gavin, Tina has two other adopted children, Madison and Otto.

Tina never knows when she may get a phone call from a prospective birth mom.

If the birth mother or father needs it, Tina can arrange for counseling, assistance with medical care and some financial assistance.

Her agency works with birth mother liaisons and social workers throughout the process and even has resources for the birth mother to be mentored after she places her child with a family so she can get her life back on track.

The majority of her clients come by word-of-mouth referrals. Assisting Tina is her “right arm” and friend, Laronda Southworth. Laronda has worked alongside Tina since the beginning of ABL and is proud that they are celebrating 10 years of placing children with loving and devoted parents so the children may have the experience of growing up in a safe and nurturing environment.

“I adopted my son, Levi, from Tina when she was the facilitator the first year,” Laronda said. Laronda made a life-changing decision to go to work for Tina’s growing agency. She now has two adopted children, Levi and Abigail.

“When I went through the adoption for my son, I just knew I would work in adoption at some point in time,” Laronda explained.

“I feel like we are making families and saving lives. For the first year, I worked with the couples during the match and the birth mothers until they placed. I also assist birth moms and adoptive parents at the hospital scene where you work with the social worker when the birth mom delivers.

I coordinate with the attorneys the consent signing and other legal matters.”

From a book, much like a storybook, the birth mothers look at pictures and read the bios of prospective parents. It includes a “Dear Birth Mom” letter and is a marketing tool for families to describe themselves to the birth parents who pick their families from these books.

The process involves a phone interview and usually the birth moms pick their first, second and third choices. ABL then notifies the prospective parents and then the birth mother will interview them over the phone.

The prospective parents can choose to match or not match, and if they’re chosen they don’t have to accept a match.

There are all kinds of scenarios that people don’t think of as to why people are put in a position to place their children for adoption. They don’t want to abort the child because of their beliefs, therefore they make the next choice. Each adoption is unlike any other adoption, and there are no two birth parents alike. Laronda compared adoptions to snowflakes: “They’re all different and each one has its own story.”

ABL has placed more than 500 children with their loving families since their opening in 2004.

Adoption is the answer to the divide between abortion and parenting. What makes ABL different is that they are not all social workers and their agency model is marketing driven. They are all adoptive parents or have been personally involved in the adoption process.

Zionsville will soon be home turf to an invasion of British automobiles on August 2 for the 26th annual Indy British Motor Day. This one-day event at Lions Park, hosted by the Indiana British Car Union, will showcase a bevy of British beauties.

Included will be MG, Triumph, DeLorean, Lotus, TVR, Riley, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Singer, Jaguar, Mini Cooper and more. The only thing missing will be fish and chips!

Each year the club decides to feature a particular Marque automobile to highlight.

This year’s car is the famous DeLorean.

According to volunteer Greg Albers, “We expect about 10 DeLoreans from across the Midwest.” These sleek machines boast a stainless steel body with doors that ascend into the air. These cars still seem light years ahead of their time.

Awards are by popular vote from all the entrants, including Best of Show, Best of Class, Excellence in Class, and specialty trophies. Classes are by Marque and

Another event sponsored by the Indiana British Car Union is the London to Brighton Run fun drive, which ran this year on June 28. The original London to Brighton Run in England celebrated the raising of the speed limit to 14 mph with the Locomotives on Highways Act of 1896 (14 mph being the estimated speed of a horse being driven furiously). Today, the Indiana British Car Union celebrates this event with a drive challenging drivers and passengers to seek clues along a scenic drive with a dinner and fun awards at the conclusion.

Looking for an affordable family activity that also benefits a charity?

For the usual fee of just $20 per carload, you can enjoy an evening on the prairie watching an exhilarating polo match. Hickory Hall Polo Club (HHPC) in Whitestown is open to the public for matches. This is home to Indiana’s only polo club, which embraces giving back to the community by playing for charities, ranging from Sullivan Munce Museum to Every Dog Counts Rescue to Witham Hospital Foundation, to name a few. For most weekends this summer, you can bring your own food and beverage of choice, enjoy being out in the country, support a local charity, and feel the earth move as horses race and pivot before your very eyes. Club founder Greg Chandler explains, “Your heart is pounding and every muscle is worked. It is an extremely demanding sport that is exhilarating to watch.” If you like fast horses, I promise you will love it!

Each summer, HHPC schedules matches with a designated charity recipient. Donation funds are raised from several resources, including admission fees, corporate sponsorships, silent auctions, and purchasing private, sideline viewing boxes. Matches begin June 20 and end September 27, 2014. You are welcome to bring a soccer ball or football, a friendly dog on a leash, etc., to enjoy the polo field between chukkas (a quarter of play time) and at halftime. Halftime also brings entertainment or participating patron games. The event announcers, including college students looking for a career in sports broadcasting, will guide viewers through the evening, with pop music playing. There is something for everyone.

While many of us have the impression that polo is a sport only for royalty, it is actually a sport that is more affordable than you may realize. You don’t have to have millions to get into this sport. In many ways, it is comparable to a country club membership. One does not even need to own a horse to get involved. HHPC offers lessons with the horse and all the tack provided and a few other options.

Greg recommends riding for six months regularly to build up muscles to ensure that you are a solid rider. If you want to try your hand at playing, there are horses available for lease. And if you decide to join the club, there are plenty of helping hands along the way.

From there, you build your own team of polo ponies, which are actually in the 15- to 16-hand range for size. Approximately 95 percent of the horses are Thoroughbreds taken off the racetrack.

At roughly 6 or 7 years old, they can play into their early 20s. These elite athletes have a life of playing hard in June through September.

During the off months, they enjoy mild exercise and just being a horse. They need stamina and mental ability to stay in the game.

A good polo pony will learn to anticipate a burst into speed, turn on a dime, or stop in midstream. Many polo ponies know more about the game than the rider—they teach the rider how to play.

Participants can play with one horse in the first and last chukkas. As players get more involved, they usually own four or more horses, at least one for each of the four chukkas. In this strenuous game, a fresh pony must always be on hand, tacked up and ready to go.

While some of the players have been riding most of their lives, there are also many who enter the sport in midlife when they finally have the time and means to enjoy this group sport. And there are many riders who enjoy polo well into their 70s. “Age is not an issue,” according to Greg.

What do you wear to a polo match? It depends on the day or evening’s marquis charity. There are some gala events where formal sun attire would be appropriate, and ticket prices vary per event.

All events have general admission and whether you go formal or general admission, you must bring your own picnic. Casual attire is worn for most games, which includes jeans and shorts. No derby hats required here.

ZIONSVILLE COUNTRY KENNEL’S NEW DOG (WATER) PARK The Zionsville Country Kennel is pleased to announce that it will be celebrating the grand opening on July 12 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. of its watery addition to its existing leash-free dog park known as The Retreat. They will now have over 7 acres for you and your dogs to explore and run, plus a lake to splash in and cool off (dogs only).

Just some info on the grand opening, if you are not currently a member: you will need to keep your dog on his/her leash. They will have free food and drinks, giveaways, and a few other surprises.

The Retreat is the area’s first private leash-free dog park, and includes a five-acre fenced-in area just to the north of the main facility. The new area could be called a doggie water park because it includes a pond with a dock for those dogs that love the water.

The hours on the new section will be the same as the old section— sunrise to sunset, 365 days per year. (They do close the park on some special occasions like for private birthday parties or group

outings.) It is a members-only dog park, and you need to make an appointment for a free assessment of your dog(s) to qualify for membership. Your pets also need to be up to date on all vaccinations including rabies and distemper, and spayed or neutered, depending on their age. They also have a separate section for smaller dogs.

Every family that purchases a membership up to and including July 12 will only pay $110 per year for this year and next year (up to 3 dogs per family). After July 12, the cost will be $150 per year per dog, and then a 30 percent discount for each additional dog in the same family. They will also offer a 6-month pass for $100, and a 3-month pass for $70.

With the hot summer days ahead, it is the perfect cool exercise area for any dog attracted to the water. Don’t forget, you can get your dog trimmed and coiffed after the swim at the Zionsville Country Kennel.

f you’re looking for an outdoor alternative to the normal Friday night summer activities, check out Traders Point Creamery’s Dinner on the Deck and the Green Market.

For years, this Friday evening event has been a favorite of northsiders who enjoy fresh air and great food in a peaceful, bucolic setting surrounded by a working organic dairy. However, this year the event is getting an upgrade to make the evening even more pleasurable.

Every Friday evening this summer, through August, the Traders Point Creamery will have live music playing in front of their beautiful organic garden, the source of many of the herbs and vegetables used to prepare the freshest food around. Before having dinner on the deck, you can do a little grocery shopping at the farmer’s market stands lining the deck area.

The garden lawn is filled with the bright oranges, greens and blues

of repurposed wooden pallet furniture with big umbrellas. Guests can lounge on the cushions to enjoy the music with some wine, beer or sangria from the outdoor bar. The bar, too, has gotten a facelift with turquoise wooden pallets to fit the celebratory summer mood. The colors are bright and festive and the food is, as always, fresh, organic and delicious.

There is a set menu that changes weekly, according to the availability of farm-fresh ingredients. Dinner prices will also vary a bit through the summer, typically $20-$22 and $10 for kids.

Traders Point Creamery’s Friday evenings also offer pony rides for the kids. Don’t forget that Traders Point Creamery every day offers some of the freshest and most delicious ice cream and frozen yogurt at their outside dairy bar.
