Jamerson: Elevating 24 Dave His Game | Kelly Matthews

Our December issue features the story of Dave Jamerson, a standout high school and college basketball player who once scored 60 points in a game for Ohio University. He was drafted by the Miami Heat in the first round of the NBA draft. However, his professional career was prematurely cut short by a knee injury. Find out how Dave made the transition from a high-profile professional athlete to the current outreach pastor for Traders Point Christian Church.

The entire staff at ZCVC are excited about their newest focus which is animal behavior. The clinic has recently received the Feline Friendly Practice Gold Certificate awarded by the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Dr. Shari was delighted to hear Dr. Ian Dunbar (the founder of the animal behavior movement) speak, and the entire staff attended a recent all-day seminar by renowned animal behaviorist Sophia Yin on Low-Stress Handling Techniques (see our Facebook photo!). Knowing how best to minimize stress for your pet during its veterinary visit is their goal. It is a lot of work learning new techniques, but the benefit to the pet makes it all worthwhile!

compassionate people dedicated to your special furry family member. That dedication spills over into the clinic’s commitment to community. Zionsville Country Vet Clinic’s doctors work regularly with the Boone County Humane Society, Cats Haven, and many specific breed rescue groups such as Bulldog and Greyhound Rescue.

The ZCVC philosophy is embodied in the heart of their team members. They are

For the dedicated team at ZCVC, the new slogan says it all:

The creation of the DADO Animal Fund (named after Dr. Shari’s father, another animal lover) was in response to a community need to provide medical care to homeless dogs and cats in Boone County. This Good Samaritan fund has provided care and found homes for scores of animals!

This holiday season share with us the joy of helping others! Like many of you, we are so grateful for the communities in which we live, work, play and raise our families. How fortunate all of us are to have great residents, organizations, and companies that allow collaboration to address community issues.

Most of all, the employees of State Bank of Lizton are appreciative of the trust you have placed in us to help local businesses grow and prosper and to help families realize dreams each day. In your honor, we are making a donation to the

STATE BANK OF LIZTON CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION ENDOWED FUND.

As this fund grows, grants will be made to several non-profit organizations in Hendricks and Boone counties. Best wishes for a happy holiday and a bright new year!

12 Days of Giving | Geri Neita . Photos | JJ Kaplan For the past six years, Zionsville Community High School’s Student Council has brought together a growing number of student organizations to participate in the 12 Days of Giving. “The idea behind this is to try to coordinate the groups that plan on doing something around the holidays, so there’s more of a united effort,” said Amanda Vanderbur, psychology teacher and sponsor of Student Council. Representatives from 30 different groups turned out at the organizational meeting in late October which represented roughly half of the high school’s student groups, keeping in mind that many students belong to more than one club. “In the past, we have had an anchor charity, such as The Caring Center in Lebanon, Indiana, Gleaners Food Bank and Heifer International,” said Mrs. Vanderbur. “This year, we have a lot of different goals.” Three primary areas of focus for 2013’s

ZCHS STUDENT COUNCIL’S FAR-REACHING ENDEAVOR

12 Days of Giving are an orphanage in Honduras; Timmy Global Health (providing impoverished families with stoves); and a mission trip to Haiti where students and adults help rebuild homes during spring break. Each student group involved will sponsor specific fundraising activities, and some will direct funds to other charities such as Just Win Ruby! Community Connection which supports families that are affected by childhood cancer. “I think it’s a really good way for all the clubs to work altogether, even though they’re benefitting different causes,” said Dixe Schillaci, copresident of Student Council. “They’re helping the community in Zionsville, and they’re helping the community of the world.” Sara Prus, senior class representative said, “It unites us so we can all work towards a common goal of raising all this money. It promotes giving. I love it.” Look for students selling SaveAround

coupon books. They make great gifts and can be purchased for $20 with 50 percent of the proceeds going toward the Student Council event. The books, which contain coupons for businesses located in the greater Indianapolis area, will be delivered by December 13, the final day of the 12 Days of Giving. “Our goal is to raise $3,000 for all the good causes that we’re supporting here

at the high school over this 12 day period,” Mrs. Vanderbur explained, encouraging students to participate in all the fundraising activities. “Leaders of each group are asked to champion all the events and talk them up within their individual groups. Young Eagles unite to save the Great Apes

| Janelle Morrison . Photos | JJ Kaplan The Eagle Elementary third graders recently gathered for a special presentation by the Indianapolis Zoo’s 2012 Indianapolis Prize Winner, Dr. Steven Amstup, Chief Scientist with Polar Bears International. Dr. Amstup spoke to the budding conservationists about how the climate affects the bears’ habitat and longterm viability as a species. This lecture by a world renowned authority is just one of many programs integrating animals and academics that Eagle Elementary is offering their student body. In the spring last year, Chris Squier, principal of Eagle Elementary, and Beth Brent, the school’s literacy coach, collaborated on a brilliant idea that would lead to a unique partnership with the Indianapolis Zoo. While scouting for a book for the school’s “One Book, One School” program where a chapter book is selected and then read by the entire elementary school, Principal Squier happened upon The One and Only Ivan at the Indianapolis Zoo’s gift shop. In a conversation with a zoo employee, she learned that the school was planning to unveil a new exhibit in 2014, the International Orangutan Center. Principal Squier purchased a copy of The One and Only Ivan with the idea that the students would read about the values that the book promotes like friendship, art and hope while educating the students about the Great Apes. She shared the book and the concept with Beth. With the assistance of faculty members Kelly Masters and Jayne Shubat, together they created a curriculum for the entire school with a focus on the Great Apes. “We had a big convocation with the students, and there were several parents also in attendance,” Squier explained. “We rolled out the book and introduced the idea that all of the grade levels would be doing activities all year long. We would be really concentrating on apes throughout the year, gorillas specifically, while we are reading the book and then move to the orangutans by the end of the year.” To encourage the students’ enthusiasm and to help promote the overall project, Beth designed T-shirts that every student will wear to different activities and events supporting the Great Apes theme. One incredible opportunity will include a field trip for the entire fourth grade to patronize the Cincinnati Zoo, courtesy of a grant awarded to Eagle Elementary from the Zionsville Education Foundation. The entire grade will visit the neighboring zoo’s exhibit housing orangutans, gorillas and bonobos in the spring 2014. As the faculty at Eagle Elementary grew more excited about their in-house project, they reached out to the Indianapolis Zoo to learn more about their newest permanent exhibit and learning center. Principal Squier connected with Kerry Tuttle, Public Campaign Coordinator for the Indianapolis Zoo. They soon began collaborating on curriculum ideas and activities to share with area schools for the Zoo’s programming and fundraising initiatives. Schools participating in the Zoo’s school program geared towards grades K-8 are eligible to earn a trip to LEFT: Azy will make his debut along with his fellow orangutans at the Indianapolis Zoo when the exhibit opens to the public on May 24, 2014 (Photo | Mike Crowther) . The Director of Public Relations for the Indianapolis Zoo, Jon Glesing, explained the special opportunities that will be available to participating schools and the overall importance of having an exhibit like the one that is being completed at the Zoo for the longterm viability of these magnificent animals. “The Indianapolis Zoo is on the brink of opening a world class exhibit, the International Orangutan Center on May 24, 2014,” Glesing explained. “It is an exhibit unlike anything else in the world, and it is in large part geared at drawing attention to the endangered species status of orangutans in the wild. They are on track to go extinct in this generation of students’ lifetimes. Orangutans will be gone from the face of the earth.” Orangutans are the closest relative to humans on this planet sharing 97 percent of their DNA. They have the ability to learn, remember and use tools and are very intelligent animals. One of the Zoo’s primary functions is to educate the public.

The International Orangutan Center school program is geared to build awareness of the importance of keeping animals, specifically orangutans, on this planet. “It’s going to be a challenge to these kids today to help carry that torch when we are gone,” Glesing concludes. With an approximate price tag of $30 million for this exhibit, the Zoo has raised $27 million to date. The Zoo is now in the “public phase” where they are introducing opportunities for individuals, families and area schools to donate funds.

Nine orangutans will debut at the Indianapolis Zoo May 24 in this “100 year exhibit.” It is the Zoo’s goal to inspire their visitors with the stories of these fascinating primates and stories of survival despite their endangered status. The Zoo faculty, educators and all of the students will continue working diligently to make Indiana a wonderful long-lasting home for these Great Apes while instilling the necessary compassion and education to future generations. For more information on the Indianapolis Zoo’s very own Azy and his fellow orangutans, visit azyandfriends.com. Janelle Morrison is the owner of MADD Media Solutions and a freelance writer. In connection with the schools, the Zoo has organized a fundraiser in which each school or class that raises a minimum of $500 will have special opportunities to get to the exhibit. The five schools that raise the most funds will get the opportunity to come to Zoo and “test drive” the exhibit before it opens to the general public. Eagle Elementary has met their $500 goal and will continue to raise funds over the course of the school year with a program creatively dubbed “Pennies for Primates.” All proceeds raised will go to the Zoo for the conservation efforts for orangutans.

WITHAM HEALTH SERVICES AT ANSON RECEIVES PRESS GANEY 2013 GUARDIAN OF EXCELLENCE AWARD℠ Witham Health Services’ Emergency Department at its nearby Anson location has received national recognition as a 2013 Guardian of Excellence Award℠ winner by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. The prestigious award recognizes top-performing facilities that consistently achieved the 95th percentile of performance in patient satisfaction. Fewer than five percent of all Press Ganey clients reach this threshold and consistently maintain it for the one year reporting period. In fact, Witham has exceeded that mark with a 99 percent patient satisfaction rate. Press Ganey partners with more than 10,000 health care facilities, including more than half of all U.S. hospitals, to measure and improve the patient experience. “This award represents an important recognition from one of the industry leaders in measuring, understanding and improving the patient experience,” said Raymond Ingham, CEO, President of Witham Health Services. “Our

emergency department is staffed by board-certified physicians and registered nurses who are trained in providing quality, compassionate care.” “This award reinforces our commitment to patient satisfaction and provides us with an opportunity to analyze our results and further strengthen our focus of providing superior patient satisfaction across other departments in the hospital as well,” added Ingham. Witham’s receipt of this award is just one more example that the quality of service is not dependent on the size of the health provider. More important than the size of the facility is its focus on patient care. Providing quality care not only involves how well care is delivered, but also how well you are treated as an individual. A small hospital means you are never a number or a condition; you are a person. “We are proud to partner with Witham Health Services,” said Patrick T. Ryan, CEO of Press Ganey. “Achieving

this level of excellence reflects the organization’s commitment to delivering outstanding service and quality. Witham’s efforts benefit patients throughout Boone County and will lead to improved patient experiences.” Zionsville resident and Emergency Department Director Dr. Anthony G. Steele said, “It is an honor to be recognized by this national award as being at the very top of patient satisfaction. Very few institutions nationwide receive this accolade. Our total team effort at the Anson ER is focused on serving the healthcare needs of our community,” said Dr. Steele. In thanking the Zionsville community for its support, Dr. Steele stated, “I want to thank our community for the support that we have received. Trusting your health to someone is a very personal and deeply important decision. We thank you for entrusting the Anson ER.”

DAVE JAMERSON

Elevating His Game | Kelly Matthews . Photos | JJ Kaplan

Then he blew out his knee.

Dave Jamerson looks like a guy who could still put up a three from downtown. For those of us a little fuzzy on basketball slang, that means to hit a shot behind the three point arc. At 6-5 and still seriously fit, Jamerson could probably teach a master class on how to take that shot.

There was always an Indiana connection. Jamerson’s father, John, was actually drafted in 1970 by the Indiana Pacers but never played for the team. Instead he played two years for the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots. Later, he became a basketball coach and teacher in the Akron, Ohio area. He was and still is Jamerson’s biggest fan in all areas of his sports career and his life.

Once upon a time, the Zionsville resident was famous for his elegant three pointers. In 1989 against the University of Charleston, he set a single game NCAA Division I record for three pointers, hitting 14 of them and scoring 60 points in one game. Yep, you read that right. He is also Ohio University’s all-time leading scorer and finished second in the nation his senior season by averaging 31.2 points per game. In addition, he’s no typical jock. He was a First Team Academic All American. Needless to say, his #33 jersey at OU was retired. Obviously, the NBA took notice and quickly came calling. If you are a basketball fan, no doubt you have heard of Dave Jamerson. Just Google him. Some of his greatest basketball runs are still on YouTube. A first round pick to the Miami Heat in the 1990 NBA draft, Jamerson played for the Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz and the New Jersey Nets. Life was fast and furious. He played against Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon. He played all the famous venues – the Boston Garden and the LA Forum where Jack Nicholson sat smiling two seats away. “Man,” Jamerson said, “was that fun! It was an amazing time in my life.” 24

Zionsville_December_2013.indd 24

Basketball great Isiah Thomas once said, “If all I’m ever remembered for is being a good ball player, then I’ve done a bad job with the rest of my life.” For Dave Jamerson, basketball was apparently just the opening act. Just as he once traveled the world playing ball, Jamerson now circles the globe as outreach pastor for Traders Point Christian Church. He still has a passion for basketball, but now his heart and hopes go way beyond hoops. Jamerson jokes that having to guard Magic Johnson made him turn to God, but it was really his teammate his rookie year, David Wood, that showed him there was more to life than fast living, crazy physical talent and making millions. “My friend David Wood’s lifestyle and dignified actions impressed me,” said Jamerson. “I saw that his faith sustained him. It was incredibly life-changing.” So at 23, Jamerson decided to sprint down a spiritual path that many pro athletes choose to avoid. But as his faith grew, his knee gave out. His career was over. It occurred to him that today’s pro athletes get caught up in a wild ride that they are usually unprepared for in every way.

“Lots of them are searching for meaning,” Jamerson said, “In fact, almost 80 percent of NFL athletes are in worse financial situations after they finish playing than when they started.” The spiritual and emotional hardships would no doubt be equally unsettling but difficult to measure. Jamerson saw an opportunity to help. In 1999, he and Mark Thomas, a defensive end for the Colts, started a Bible study that exploded in growth as more pro athletes and their families started to attend. A church in Carmel was born.

“The Every Nation Church,” Jamerson said, “really helped athletes and others find divine purpose.” “Because the average professional sports career is 3.1 years, some players joke that NFL should stand for ‘not for long.’ You can get hurt or cut…even only one day after winning the Super Bowl. I’ve seen it happen,” he explained. “NFL, NBA, no matter – you can’t build your house or your life on sand whether it’s fame, money or skill.”

Today Jamerson is one of a small number of former professional athletes in the nation to become a full-time pastor. He has been on missions to 40 countries, planted churches, organized medical help, built homes and put shoes on the feet of needy children in countries all over the world. “People would be so surprised at how hard we work,” Jamerson said, “but it is the most rewarding and fulfilling job I’ve ever done.” Traders Point Christian Church has been around for 180 years, but with the opening of a new building, it has recently enjoyed a massive wave of new members. The church has already expanded once and is about to get even bigger. Jamerson hopes the church continues its warp speed growth. “We’ve been in the fastest growing 100 churches in the nation for three years now,” he explains. “Traders Point has an incredible legacy in our city of service and leadership. We have a passion for serving this community, and we’re not going anywhere.”

Rapid Fire with Dave Jamerson

April, his wife of 21 years, shares the sentiment. “We love this area. Fellowshipping with our church family, shopping at Lesley Jane’s, eating at Greek’s Pizza or hanging out at Lion’s Park, it is just home for us. Zionsville is authentic, not pretentious,” she said.

Do you have a nickname? It always has been and always will be “DJ.”

April’s Christian dance studio, Renovate Dance Center, is located in Traders Point Christian Academy (TPCA) right behind the church. “We want to develop excellent people, not just excellent dancers,” she said. “We think students achieve their maximum potential when they know they are in a safe, loving community.” Renovate offers ballet, jazz, creative movement, tap, modern dance and hip-hop to all ages. April still teaches many of the classes herself and often accompanies her husband on mission trips. “One of my greatest experiences,” she said, “was seeing the smiles on the faces of kids in Nairobi, Kenya, as we taught them some dance steps. It was just magical and brought tears to my eyes.”

Who is your hero? My Dad. I just attended his induction into his high school sports Hall of Fame. It is his fourth one. I guess you could say I was born into a basketball loving family. Also my wife. Her faith and character inspire me every day. She really walks the walk.

Favorite movie? Cinderella Man! What cracks you up? My wife. You wouldn’t expect such a beautiful woman to be that hilarious. What is the hardest part of your job? All of it! People think we just pray and read the Bible. There is so much more to it! We have 50 mission partners around the world and 30 short-term mission teams this year alone. How do you handle stress? I lean on my faith and God. Plus, working out helps. What is your greatest strength? My ability to strategize and keep looking to the future. What was the worst day of your life? The day I blew out my knee. What will you be doing in 10 years? I hope I will continue to make a difference in the world and still serve God to the best of my ability. Are you happy with the way your life has unfolded? I think God uses adversity to make us stronger and improve our lives. If I hadn’t blown out my knee in college, I wouldn’t have wound up with the team that helped launch me into the NBA. What would your advice be to an aspiring young athlete? Build your life on something more than sports, and surround yourself with true friends and honest people. D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 3 | atZionsville.com 27

Dave Jamerson still does a little teaching himself these days. He coached at TPCA for five years and nabbed three Holiday Classic Championships, back to back Bostick Cup championships, and has seen five of his talented TPCA players go on to play college ball. But even though the ability to motivate others could easily lead to a lucrative coaching career, the Jamerson family likes life just as it is, saying, “The best part of the day is coming home to family because that’s really the part of life you remember.” The Jamersons have four children, three boys and a girl: Bret, Elijah, Trey and Mia. It’s no surprise that fourth grader Mia is a great dancer like her mom. Their three boys love basketball. “In fact,” Jamerson smiles, “we named our third boy Trey in hopes that he might be able to swish those threes from downtown.” He’d better practice. Dear old Dad will be a tough act to follow…in more ways than one. Kelly Minton Matthews is a journalist, writer, and former TV news anchor. She has worked for KATV in Little Rock, WDAF in Kansas City, WLKY in Louisville, and ESPN. She lives in Zionsnville with her husband, Stephen J. Matthews, MD, and their two daughters.

BOONE COUNTY’S BEST KEPT SECRET REVEALED | Janelle Morrison . Photos | JJ Kaplan I have only recently learned that there is a children’s home in the heart of Boone County. The Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home (IUMCH), located in Lebanon, has been a sanctuary for children in its present day location since 1924. Founded by Miss Angie Goodwin in 1915 as the Methodist Episcopal Children’s Home, the organization was relocated to Lebanon from Greencastle, Indiana. While it no longer serves as an orphanage, IUMCH has continued to provide care and resources to Hoosier children and is currently the only facility within the state of Indiana to practice the Teaching Family Model. I took a drive up to the IUMCH campus to meet with the CEO and staff to

Robert Milner and Richard Lapinski 30S. "Bud" zionsville COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER Zionsville_December_2013.indd 30

learn more about this well kept secret, the services they offer and how the surrounding communities can assist an organization that exists within their own backyard. IUMCH serves youth between the ages of 10-21 who are unable to live with their parents or legal guardians; exhibit behavioral, emotional and/ or substance abuse problems; or are victims of abuse or neglect that place the youth at risk of trouble with the law and institutionalization. The Home can accommodate up to 32 resident children. Prior to 1960, “unruly” or unwanted children were taken to a local orphanage and received no specialized treatment or organized education. In the 1960s, institutions for children

witnessed a transformation from the traditional orphanage to residential treatment centers that place children in a “family” setting. IUMCH is unique to any other facility in Indiana for a litany of reasons but most noteworthy is that the Board of Trustees and staff have committed to the Teaching Family Model on their campus under the direction of Richard Lapinski, Executive Director/CEO. Lapinski came to the IUMCH campus in August 2010 and reorganized the entire structure of the Home’s organization and staff. With Lapinski’s experience and extensive knowledge of the Teaching Family Model, the staff and residents began recognizing the benefits of this teaching method and seeing the positive results.

| DECEMBER 2013

11/26/2013 6:07:12 PM

Lapinski, a Chicagoland native, worked for his father’s construction company and then joined the Navy as an intelligence specialist. He returned home to work again in the construction industry until 1993. Lapinski, now married, was looking for a meaningful way to provide for his growing family and give back to the community. He answered an ad for Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home seeking a Family Teacher. Lapinski’s calling was revealed to him at this point, and he moved his family to Omaha, Nebraska, to work at the boys’ home. Five years later, he completed his master’s degree and took a position at the Presbyterian Home for Children in Amarillo, Texas. There he learned about the Family Teaching model that eventually led him to Lebanon, Indiana, and to IUMCH. “It was the best thing that could have happened to us,” Lapinski reflects. “It was the most rewarding five years that we spent in our adult working lives in that we were able to impact and change lives.” Lapinski explains that in his role at IUMCH, he is still affecting the lives of the children but

in a different capacity by the decisions that he makes and oversight of the Home’s programs. When Lapinski arrived to the Home’s campus, Indiana was in a transitional stage in regard to the facilitation and rehabilitation of the State’s children and youth. Lapinski was able to transform the home from a residential facility into a group home facility. He introduced, educated and implemented the Teaching Family Model to IUMCH staff and hired Teaching Family couples to begin working with the children. It’s a family style environment with a focus on reinforcing the positive behaviors that the youth are engaged in and correcting negative behaviors. The American Psychological Association recognizes the Teaching Family model as an evidence-based model of care. The model teaches troubled youth the appropriate social, academic and independent living skills that may have not been taught by family members or guardians. The model uses pro-social skills and allows the child to maintain or

advance in his or her environment using positive reinforcement. The model was developed in the 1960s by researchers such as Montrose Wolf, PhD, and Gary Timbers, PhD, at the University of Kansas. The TeachingFamily Association, an international organization, was founded in 1975 to promote this model. I was astounded by the variety of programs that IUMCH provides to the children that it serves. They offer spiritual development, independent living skills that include basic life skills, management of finances, post secondary education, psychiatric and psychological services, medication management and education at the James E. Davis School and Day School. The James E. Davis School is fully accredited by the Indiana Department of Education. The resident children usually begin their academic experience at the school with the ability to transfer to Lebanon public schools when appropriate for the individual child.

He spoke with me about the Model and the day-to-day practices that children of IUMCH experience while in their care. He has been working the Teaching Family model since 1981 and shares a common denominator with Lapinski, also having worked with Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home. He has worked in other children’s homes and foster service programs within the U.S. that eventually led him to Lebanon as an administrator. Upon meeting with Lapinski, Milner committed to a “short-term” contract that evolved to a full-time position at IUMCH.

“We focus on how to deal with frustration,” Lou Ann elaborated. “We take the kids to different places where they see people who aren’t dealing with their frustration well, and they’ll comment about that. They see that it’s working for them and that some people in public really need those skills as well.” The Weyers explained what they find most challenging about their lifestyle. “We work 16 hours a day, 80 hours a week, and that can sometimes be a little exhausting,” Lou Ann said. “You pace yourself, but you don’t shut if off. It’s just like raising your own kids.” The children go off campus for activities with their “families.” The young ladies in the Weyer household enjoy a sit-down family supper every night. They hold family meetings every week and share their days with one another. The Weyers find that they are constantly reinforcing the girls’ self-confidence. These particular young ladies have come to them beaten down by life and suffer from low self-esteem. “Our job is to raise their chin up and make them see what God created them,” Nick said. "We teach them that there is a purpose for their lives that they are beautiful and intelligent. It takes washing the mud off of these girls, so that they can see that they are

glowing and become the people that they were created to be.” Within each household on campus, the children are assigned chores and are expected to participate in family activities. They share each other’s days, special occasions and struggles under a fortified model of reinforcement and genuine compassion for one another. The Weyers emphasize that their work is not for everybody. It is not a job but a lifestyle that is immensely rewarding. As the holiday season approaches, the needs of the children are humble but great. The Home is 60 percent funded by the State of Indiana as a recognized agency of the State but relies heavily on the kindness of donors from the surrounding communities and businesses.

Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home Wish List Here is a list of needs that would make a wonderful Christmas gift for some very needy children: • Monetary donations • Gift cards: McDonald’s ($5 and $10), Walmart, Best Buy, Walgreens, restaurants • Tickets to the Indianapolis Zoo, Children’s Museum, etc. • MP3 players (shuffle only, no video please) • Earbuds • DVD Players • DVDs (G and PG only)

ARN EVERY STEP OF THE WAY Photos & Story | JJ Kaplan Ask anyone in the service industry why they do what they do. Most business owners feel an intrinsic reward much greater than the services provided. This strong sense of satisfaction of “being there” for their customers is the reason that Max Nelson and his daughter, Jennifer Nelson Williams, of ARN Mortuary and Cremation Service do what they do. As owners of Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary (ARN), Max and Jennifer pride themselves in offering personalized service to provide comfort and care. When a loved one dies in the middle of the night, whom shall be called first? Should you call the police, coroner, pastor, priest or rabbi? The answer is a simple…call ARN.

An ARN staff member lives on-site 24 hours a day to answer questions and offer assistance. This is an expense that many funeral homes have phased out. It is important to Max and Jennifer that someone personally be available and onsite to meet your needs at any time. When needed, a member of the ARN staff will come to the home day or night, arrange transportation to ARN and remain with the body through the night. It is comforting to know that someone is personally taking care of things. Max and Jennifer often honor personal requests when helping families make final arrangements. It’s the details and special requests that make the arrangements deeply personal and provide comfort to the families. DECEMBER 2013

Through the years, they have had many personal requests, each making the funeral experience more meaningful to a family. The baby boomer generation in particular wants more personalization and selection. ARN is the only crematory in the Carmel and Zionsville area that offers an onsite crematory, providing peace of mind to families and friends. By offering an onsite crematory, families can be assured the cremains (ashes) are truly their loved ones. Families may view the cremation or sit in the tranquil meditation room during the cremation and be a part of the entire process. This was an important addition to the facility when the firm moved to 11411 N. Michigan Rd. More and more families are choosing cremation: having an onsite crematory eases concerns and provides peace of mind during this stressful time. When we completed this interview, Jennifer asked if I wanted the tour. I was impressed by the beautiful chapel with its crystal chandeliers and elegant furnishings. The room can accommodate large gatherings or be divided for a smaller, more intimate service. The chapel is adaptable to serve all faiths and cultures. Attention to detail is apparent every step of the way. Max went to work in 1955 at the age of 17. He began working at Aaron-Ruben Mortuary, doing everything he could to help

the owners and learn the business. Later he attended the Indiana College of Mortuary Science. Eventually he bought out the founding partners and became sole owner. After graduating in 1990 with her degree in Psychology, Jennifer joined him in the business and became the firm’s president in 2002. Originally located on North Meridian from 1935 to 1966, the business later relocated to 86th and Ditch from 1966 to 2009. Then in 2009, they relocated to their current location at 11411 N. Michigan Rd. in Zionsville, tucked between Altum’s Horticulture Center and Zionsville Presbyterian Church. This beautiful state-of-the-art building was specifically designed to be a full-service mortuary. Whether discussing preplanning or at-need services, Max, Jennifer and their experienced staff will make you feel welcome and comforted. The experts at Aaron-RubenNelson Mortuary and Cremation Service welcome your inquiries by phone, email or dropping in. Zionsville Radio Players Keeping it Simple

| Geri Neita Remember the old days when we’d gather together to listen to our favorite weekly radio programs? Okay, neither do I, but I can imagine what it must have been like for families to converge on the living room for a much anticipated episode of Hollywood Playhouse, The Lone Ranger or The Charlie McCarthy Show (although I’m amazed at how a ventriloquist could be such a hit in radio)! Well, two creative Zionsville women are looking to bring radio drama back into our living rooms. A few days before Halloween, I was invited to a ‘listening party’ at the home of Patsy Brennan See, whose friend Susan McClelland suggested they take their love of theater to a radio audience. The Zionsville Radio Players had just wrapped up their first production, and when I arrived at the See residence, most of the actors who were involved in the inaugural show were gathered together to hear the broadcast for the first time. We each took our seats around the room, and with the fireplace burning and the lights dimmed, the entertainment began. As I closed my eyes and heard Patsy’s adaptation of “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe come to life, I found myself engrossed in my own mental movie. Briefly, I opened my eyes and glanced around the room to find that everyone else appeared to be lost in the story too. According to the Writersroom, BBC’s online source for aspiring writers, “radio drama is the most intimate relationship a scriptwriter can have with an audience.” That was evident throughout the entire Halloween broadcast which included “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe, one of the witches’ scenes from Macbeth, James Whitcomb Riley’s “Little Orphan Annie” and “Nightmare on Main Street,” an original script by Zionsville resident Lynn Manning. Having acted from the age of nine, Susan naturally joined a local theater group when she moved to Zionsville from Chicago three years ago. “It’s been really fun, but doing theater with a family [at home] is incredibly challenging because it’s a lot of time out of the house,” she said. “My family gets cranky and justifiably so.” Then one day after dropping her seven-year-old daughter Eliza at the bus, the idea of doing radio drama struck her. “Somehow or other, I stumbled on WITT,” she said. The radio station was running a spot, looking for new show ideas. She stopped by Patsy’s house and laid out her idea to adapt stories into radio plays, and the friends were off and running. Between the two, they knew plenty of talented

managed all the recording and engineering. They learned on the job, and it took some time, but the outcome was well worth the effort!

writers, actors and directors, many of whom had full-time jobs and were raising families just like Susan. “We don’t have time to mount full productions,” she said. “I know people who won’t try out for a [theater] show because they don’t want to memorize and put in months of work, but they’re thrilled to do this,” Patsy added.

One of the most exciting aspects of radio drama is that it transcends physical appearance. I sat in on a rehearsal for the Zionsville Radio Players’ upcoming production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and was impressed with the directing style of Len Mozzi. “They see us through our voices,” he told the cast as he led them through vocal exercises and warm-ups. And even for radio drama, Mozzi believes in character development – encouraging actors to have somewhat of a backstory in order to bring their characters to life.

Patsy’s life had changed too with one grandson, another on the way and a newly married daughter who had recently moved 5,000 miles away! “I can’t put two months of uninterrupted time into a production anymore,” she said. “This came along at a perfect time for me. It’s almost a distillation of what I like the best. I love the acting. I love the writing. I love pulling all these different things and people together.” She put a phone call in to Jim Walsh, WITT’s chief cook and bottle washer, and asked him if this was the type of programming that his station would like to have.

“I’ve directed lots of plays but not a radio show,” said Mozzi, who has a Master of Fine Arts in directing from Boston University’s School of Theatre Arts. Before starting his own business, he was associate director at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and taught theater at the university level.

Walsh, who has worked in broadcasting since 1964, agreed to meet with the women and learned of their qualifications, and even though they had nothing in the works, he liked the idea and encouraged them to pursue it.

“We tend to think of these people as caricatures because we’ve seen them so much,” he said, referring to the characters in A Christmas Carol, “so how do we make them real for ourselves and for each other? That’s been kind of a journey, and I think we’ve succeeded in a lot of ways.”

The downside was that the radio station didn’t have an available production engineer. So armed with a spiffy new microphone and dauntless perseverance, Patsy and Susan’s husbands, Dr. Martin See and Franklin McClelland,

rust Pizzeria Napolentana, a new addition to The Shoppes at Providence located at 12505 Old Meridian St. and the corner of Carmel Drive on Carmel’s west side, is the creation of Owner Mohey Osman. Mr. Osman, a former old Chicago pizzeria in Washington, D.C. and the Egyptian cafe in Broad Ripple and West Lafayette, brings a vision of fresh, authentic and organic ingredients to casual Italian dining. As you walk into Crust, you will notice the sound of Sinatra or Édith Piaf circulating through the air and the aroma of fresh dough baking. Look around and you will see walls paneled with distressed recycled wood. Osman’s vision of a restaurant emphasizing healthy and sustainable principles was incorporated, not just in the menu items but also in the décor. As to Crust’s menu, it offers traditional Italian items such as paninis, calzones and a different pasta dish each day. However, its specialty is pizza. The pizza starts with the finest flour imported from Italy known as Caputo 00. From there, they ladle on a pizza sauce specially made in-house. The tomatoes used to create the pizza sauce are imported from

Italy and are packaged there within two hours of being on the farm. Crust uses only the finest of Italian and Wisconsin cheeses. The meats used by Crust are all imported from Italy except for its chicken which is locally raised organic. The pizza is then baked in an open stone pizza oven that reaches a temperature of 700°. You can match your pizza or calzone with one of their 28 different wines or six craft beers. A vast majority of the wines offered are from vineyards that are organic or ecologically sustainable. In fact, two of the wines actually have programs where they plant trees for every bottle of wine sold. On Tuesdays, Crust’s special is half off select bottles of wine. Crust is the perfect place for small groups to meet. They have three “community tables” that seat up to 25. In addition, it also has a small semi-private dining area that can seat 10. So if you’re looking for something special in authentic Italian casual dining that uses only the freshest authentic ingredients, stop by Crust Pizzeria Napoletana.
