RANJ PUTHRAN “HELPING HANDS AWARD” RECIPIENT NANCY THOMPSON Congratulations to our Helping Hands Award winner for August, Nancy Thompson. Nancy, who has been the volunteer director since 2003, and her team of dedicated volunteers, run the Zionsville Food Pantry located at the Zionsville Presbyterian Church. This food pantry, under Nancy’s direction, has become the largest food pantry in Boone County. Every Friday between noon and 2 p.m., nearly 100 Boone County families come to the pantry to receive a bag of food and other essential items. Congratulations to Nancy for the award, and it is our pleasure to recognize her tireless volunteer work to help feed Boone County’s poor for more than 10 years.

GETTING BACK TO ROOTS IN ZIONSVILLE Writer and Photographer / JJ Kaplan

If you haven’t heard about Salem Farms on Hunt Club and CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) you will soon. Be prepared to welcome home Kevin and Laura Channell to the new farm they just purchased in the Salem Crossing area of Zionsville (near the corner of Kissel and Hunt Club Road). Plans are underway to begin a diverse organic produce farm, along with construction of a home and a retail setting to sell their produce and distribute CSA shares to farm members. The Channells owned and operated an organic farm in Vermont and are returning after being gone for about 10 years. Not only do they bring their love of farming and skills to start a new business, but they now have 1-year-old twin boys in tow! Kevin and Laura both grew up in Greenwood, Indiana, and attended Center Grove schools. As a young girl, Laura and her mom would often make a day trip to Zionsville where they enjoyed dessert at the Pie Safe and shopped for clothes at our local boutiques. They would drive by the house Laura’s grandfather built in the village, and her mom would recall attending kindergarten at the church that is now The Sanctuary art gallery. They would enjoy the mother-daughter days a few times a year, and these days were filled with fond memories. Laura fell in love with Zionsville. It was later when Kevin and Laura were students at Indiana University in Bloomington that they became sweethearts and eventually married in 2000. The newlyweds purchased a cute little 1880s home in Zionsville at the corner of 4th and Poplar that they enjoyed fixing up as they dreamed about living off the land and growing food. They began to plan a journey that would eventually take them to New England and then bring them back to Zionsville. An opportunity to apprentice with an established organic farm in Saratoga Springs, New York, presented itself in 2004. As apprentices, they were involved with the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) and were able to attend many workshops and visit other farms in the area. And in 2005, they began to learn about how to operate a CSA by apprenticing at another organic farm in Brunswick, Maine. In 2006, the Channells purchased a beautiful piece of land on the Connecticut River in Fairlee, Vermont, to start a farm of their own. They began “Your Farm” and sold their produce at local Farmers’ Markets, through a summer and winter CSA membership, to local restaurants and stores. The Channells enjoyed growing food for their customers and especially liked the CSA membership. Laura explains, “A CSA is when people in the community support a local farm by purchasing a share of the farm’s harvest before the season begins. Then, throughout the growing season, each member receives a weekly harvest from the farm. Each week we would send out an email to members letting them know what produce they would be receiving, along with recipe ideas and news from the farm. It is a great way to foster community around local agriculture. The Channells owned and operated Your Farm until 2013. When the couple learned they would soon be parents to twins, they decided to return to their roots here in Zionsville to be close to their families. The boys, Elias and Eliot, just celebrated their first birthday and are surrounded with family. As Kevin explains, “We absolutely LOVE Zionsville and being back in Indiana. Zionsville is a wonderful place for us to raise our family. We are excited to start another farm and grow healthy food for the community. We love that our new farm in Zionsville is close enough to the community for so many people to have the opportunity to enjoy.” Plans for the new farm include offering CSA shares and operating a retail space to sell the produce to the community. The Channells hope that Salem Farms on Hunt Club will become an agricultural destination where customers can learn where their food comes from and enjoy being in the country.

Shepherd Community Center

Homework requires discipline: most kids would rather be doing something else. Even so, a handful of students from four local high schools decided that in addition to doing their own homework, they would help a group of inner-city kids do theirs. These teens served as volunteer tutors at Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis last winter and spring. Shepherd Community Center’s goal is to “break the cycle of poverty.” The center offers a variety of programs and services for neighborhoods on Indy’s east side, including an accredited Christian school for preschool through fourth grade and an afterschool program for first through twelfth grade. Alex Wible, Carley Lanham, Carly Bias, Hadley Rankin, Rebecca Loenen, and Will Cunningham assisted with the afterschool program last year. Though they attend four different high schools, they are all involved in the youth program at Zionsville Presbyterian Church (ZPC). They, along with a few adults, formed the core of the church’s effort to support tutoring at Shepherd. Misty Soderstrom, a member at ZPC, drove the student volunteers to Shepherd most Thursday afternoons. She and the other volunteers helped kids at Shepherd with their homework and also led them in games, songs, and crafts as part of the afterschool program. The church’s participation grew out of a summer mission trip to Shepherd in July 2013. ZPC staff realized that partnering with Shepherd would provide a perfect opportunity for families to get involved in missions without going far from home. And Shepherd already had effective programs in place that volunteers could plug into. One of the programs Shepherd hosts is called EXCEL—Embracing eXcellence and Committing to Education for Life. For six weeks in the summer, EXCEL offers

academic enrichment, worship, playtime, and two hot meals a day to 225 local youth. ZPC’s youth director, Josh Mygatt, believed helping with EXCEL would be a great opportunity for ZPC youth, and he encouraged them to participate. Volunteers stayed on site and helped with the program for a week last July. The church wanted to stay connected to Shepherd and decided that helping with afterschool tutoring was the next logical step. So, starting last January, a group of volunteers headed southeast on I-465 at 3:30 p.m. one Thursday. Greg Rankin was among them. He had been on the mission trip in July, and welcomed the chance to build on relationships he had begun the previous summer. “The Shepherd students are a great group of kids,” Rankin commented. “They are wellbehaved, and by and large, they are happy to be there. And the staff is phenomenal and does a tremendous job of loving on the kids. It’s great to see the work they are doing there—that God is doing there.”

with the kids, according to Hadley, was filtering what she said to them. “With them growing up in a lot of really tough circumstances, you had to be sure you weren’t talking about stuff that they couldn’t relate to or that would offend them in some way. There were several things that the staff asked us not to talk about, things that make up our daily conversations, like families.” The experience put her out of her comfort zone, but Hadley enjoyed that. “I liked doing stuff that was new, that I’d never done before,” she said. She learned more about poverty, and how close it was to home. The experience also helped her learn more about herself. “This might sound silly, but it gave me more confidence in myself, because the kids look up to you so much. Spending an entire day with a kid can really change your perspective on things.”

Alex Wible, who attends Carmel High School, worked with sixth graders at Shepherd. “A lot of times, helping with homework meant getting them motivated to do their homework,” Alex said. “I had to help with a few math problems, but a lot of Greg Rankin’s daughter, Hadley, is a student the time it was just motivation; they’d rather at Park Tudor School. Alex liked the relational aspect of volunteering. “It’s really rewarding when the kids start trusting you,” she said. “One week when I was gone, one of the kids asked where I was. It was fulfilling to know that they wanted me to be there.” Ed Memmen is one of the adults who helped. “It’s a really worthwhile endeavor… to get kids out of poverty,” Memmen said. Their needs are tangible; one girl said she

had to wear a coat at home because the heat had been shut off. “Each little touch of encouragement is important,” Memmen said. “One of the benefits of tutoring is obvious: seeing them learn, helping with education. But the relationship is also important. Being there, telling them you love them, caring, spending time—it makes an impact.” A couple weeks ago the church organized a second summer mission trip to Shepherd Community Center. Josh Mygatt, youth director, attended again with seven of the church’s youth and a few parents. He said the church intends to continue this partnership in ministry in the coming year and beyond. Mygatt shared a story that reflected how many of the volunteers felt when their week at Shepherd came to a close. “One of the high school students who volunteered last week, Will Cunningham, had also helped in 2013. Will said that last year, when the week was over, he was really sad about leaving. But this year, he felt okay about it, because we weren’t really saying good-bye,” Mygatt said. “Knowing that school starts soon, and the afterschool program with it, we were excited to tell them we’d see them in a few weeks.”

Once a year, Optimus Park in Broad Ripple plays host to a spectacular gathering of both craft beers and craft beer lovers in the form of the Indiana Microbrewers Festival. Located a few blocks north of Broad Ripple Ave. near the Indianapolis Art Center, this event becomes better organized every year. Lines for food, beer, and lavatories were as minimal as can be expected at a beer festival with approximately 5,000 people in attendance. Both Dr. Lauer and myself were in attendance, as usual. While Dr. Lauer found some new and interesting local/regional breweries, I must admit that it was difficult to ignore the tried and true breweries I know and love. It is also nice to know someone who can walk onto the back line and get beer more quickly.

ZWANZIGZ BREWERY (Columbus, IN) served a golden blueberry ale that was full of blueberry flavor and aroma and yet was incredibly dry and refreshing. HANS: I had that blueberry ale, and it was indeed delicious. For those who think fruit beer means sweet and cloying, read: It does not have to!

JOE: For those who make it beyond Indianapolis, there are some interesting new breweries worthy of attention. 18TH STREET BREWERY (Gary, IN) got their brewer from PIPEWORKS BREWING (Chicago, IL), which was named the best new brewery of 2013 according to ratebeer.com. Grapefruit Dead Imperial IPA and Hunter’s Double Milk Stout were both quite good. BARE HANDS BREWING (Granger, IN) was serving a Thai p.a.(sic) with hints of lime, ginger, and tea. It was quite interesting, and their other IPAs and Pale Ales were good, as well. EVIL CZECH BREWERY (Mishawaka, IN) poured a Bohemian (that means Czechstyle as opposed to German) Pilsner that took me right back to Prague. Pilsner

JOE: From DANNY BOY (soon to be open in The Village of West Clay in Carmel, IN), there was a solid black IPA. NEW DAY MEADERY (Fountain Square) does not make beer, but their mead ranges from sweet and fruity through bone dry. They even make a mead with hops! Imperial Raspberry Breakfast Magpie was an outstanding mead. SCARLET LANE BREWERY (McCordsville, IN) won a Brewer’s Cup award for their Vivian Red IPA, which showed as well as advertised over the weekend. Their coffee coconut stout was dry and balanced. HANS: My friend Leah from TAXMAN (Bargersville, IN) was pouring a Belgian Dubbel that was bone dry and incredibly attenuated (this means that there was no leftover sugar after yeast finishes its meal), as I have come to expect from this brewery. When people think that Belgian style beer is either too sweet or too syrupy, it is usually because of left over sugar, or underattenuation. The Dubbel had the typical

raisiney character of a Dubbel, but it was truly multidimensional in its flavor. UNION BREWING (Carmel, IN) focuses on cask-conditioned beer (meaning that the beer is carbonated in the keg) served from traditional hand-drawn beer engines (handpull). I’ve never visited England (home of cask-conditioning), but tasting the Monon Mild, with its grassy hops and soft mouth-feel, from Union is probably the next best thing. BARLEY ISLAND (Noblesville,IN) was serving a Saison (Belgian) that was crisp, dry, and refreshing, and yet was packing around 8% abv. Owner/Brewmaster Jeff Eaton is a more-than-competent brewer and a highly regarded judge. BRUGGE BRASSERIE (Indianapolis, IN) rarely fails to bring a little sourness, and their Diamond Kings of Heaven 2014 did not disappoint. While the exact recipe varies from year to year, Owner/Brewmaster Ted Miller had been using the same wine barrel for some time, and it is populated with the appropriate microfauna to produce the lactic acidity for which Diamond Kings is known. After witnessing inexperienced festivalgoers spitting out Diamond Kings at a previous festival, there is always a password required to sample Diamond Kings. When it comes to sour beer—If you know, then you know. On the American side of beer styles, Ted Miller also produces beer under the Outliers label. From Outliers, there was a strong Blonde Ale brewed with botanicals, Chinese rice

wine yeast, and then aged in a brandy barrel for about a month. This beer had stunning complexity and a very refreshing quality. JOE: That was also one of my favorite beers this year! HANS: TRITON BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) produced two incredibly unique and outstanding beers for the festival. French Toast Stout and French Toast Stout with Strawberries could not have been more aptly named and either one would be a showstopper on most occasions.

TIN MAN BREWING COMPANY (Evansville, IN) was serving a stout that had been aged in a Makerâ€™s Mark barrel, and it was outstanding. This festival has gotten better with each passing year. The available space has more than doubled since 2007, while the attendance is still pretty much the same. It rarely feels crowded, and there are plenty of

food and washing facilities. Thankfully, we dodged the 90+ degree heat that is usually a factor at the Microbrewers Festival. Joe and I agree that it would not be possible to taste even half of what is typically available at this event, so please understand that this article is inherently incomplete. Just know that this is the premier beer event in Indianapolis each and every year.

I have said before that BIER BREWERY (Indianapolis, IN) makes the best and only pumpkin ale that anyone should drink. For the festival, they came with a barrel-aged Pumpkin Porter worthy of a best-in-show award. UPLAND BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) came with a bunch of their Lambics, of which I was only able to taste the 2014 Peach Lambic, poured by the brewer himself, Caleb Staton. His Lambics have gotten better and better over the years. BLACK ACRE BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) was pouring Bitter Life Coffee IPA. It was a blend of American IPA and locally roasted coffee, the result of which was slightly citrusy from the hops and roasty and slightly bitter from the coffee. TOW YARD BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) came in strong with their Horsepower Double Pale Ale, which is mildly citrusy but restrained enough in its bitterness that it could be a crossover beer for those hop-haters out there. It hides its 8+abv very well. Owner Mike Deweese also brought some gems from his cellar, which are certainly not available anywhere other than in his company, and rest assured, the right beer improves over time just like the finest of wines. I tasted 12-year-old World Wide Stout from Dogfish Head and 10-year-old Double Bastard from Stone. And remember that 2004 Beast from Avery that you thought would never mellow? Write from the Heart reuniting with their favorite high school teachers. I had such an opportunity just over a year ago. While working from my office that is nestled on the second floor of the children’s store Ballerinas and Bruisers in downtown Zionsville, I engaged in a conversation with one of the store’s customers who looked remarkably familiar. Deeper into the conversation, she and I realized that she had been my W131 teacher at Carmel High School and was the one teacher who realized my potential. She encouraged me to indulge in my passion for literature that led me to become a professional writer. Several moons post-graduation, my former composition teacher, Peggy Baker, and I were reunited and we picked up from where we left off before I ventured onto my life’s path. Peggy, a Zionsville resident, began teaching in the English department for the Carmel Clay Schools in 1989 and retired from a fulfilling career in 2012.

Let’s take a trip back down amnesia lane and think back on our formative years in school. What was your favorite subject? Which teacher had a hand in developing who you are today? Not many adults have the privilege of

Peggy and I have spent several conversations since that fateful day at her favorite children’s store, about her instructions and how she was one of the teachers who truly took the time to invest in her students, including me. She is the one teacher who instilled in me the importance of editing and re-editing and having the confidence to keep working until the piece was “just right.” While many other teachers and professors would just bleed all over my papers with red ink, Peggy would edit with a Number 2 pencil. She would say, “Mistakes are made so they can be corrected. Now, let’s look at how we can make this sentence better.” Peggy taught several classes at CHS including W131, American Literature, British Literature, English Honors, Classical Literature and Novels, just to name a few. As the wife of Judge John Baker, a judge on the Indiana Court of Appeals, Peggy would take her W131 class downtown to

Lucy Stevens is about to begin another chapter in her life as she sets off for college this month at St. Johns University in New York. She received a full-ride scholarship for four years to an elite university to be a member of their prestigious womenâ€™s golf team. This statuesque blonde with a perky demeanor exuded confidence and optimism with her warm handshake and soft eyes. As she shared her journey with me, I felt myself drawn to her with admiration of her trials and triumphs. By the end of our interview, I was awestruck by her fortitude and grace in how she views her life. What I saw is great wisdom in a young woman who is going to accomplish great things in her future. She is moving on to greener courses. Daughter of William and Peggy Stevens, Lucy picked up her first set of golf clubs at age fourâ€Śand they were Snoopy clubs, to boot! With her mom being a professional golfer, Lucy had coaching from day one, and she began to excel in the sport. Her mother encouraged her to be physically active and to enjoy a variety of sports. Through middle school, Lucy enjoyed yoga, weight lifting, stretching, biking, hiking, basketball, soccer, track and running. As she completed middle school, she had a decision to make between playing basketball and golf. She enjoyed them both, suggesting “every basketball court looks the same, but every golf course is unique and outside,” Lucy explains. Golf was the easy winner. After several moves before coming to Zionsville, and then the move of two middle schools into one high school, Lucy found herself searching for her sense of self, like many teens. Playing golf was one activity that helped her relieve stress and it helped give her a sense of identity. “You just need to keep encouraging and being there for your child,” Peggy shares. “I always tried to stay connected to my daughter by taking the time to do things she enjoys… shopping, golfing. I was there when she needed me.” When she entered high school, she earned the #1 spot on the golf team as a freshman. Lucy has learned to take it all in stride, the good along with the bad. “Every shot has a purpose, whether it is a good shot or bad shot.” Lucy continues, “A good shot teaches

Lucy enjoys nature and the earthy connection that golf offers. According to her, “It makes me stop and smell the roses. All golf courses are beautiful and I appreciate the simplicity in nature. It’s difficult to have a bad day when you are surrounded by nature and beauty.” When facing difficult times, she explains, “You don’t ask for a lesser load, but rather, broader shoulders.” She credits two mentors, Coach Jeff Anderson and Ann Obermeyer, for providing positive feedback and encouragement. Not too long ago, this would have been considered just another high school girls’ soccer game on a fall day in Central Indiana. Probably a few autumns ago, the stands would have been filled only with parents and friends. The competition may have been labeled as spirited but probably short of being called fierce. And perhaps players and coaches on both sides would have been guilty of thinking ahead to the upcoming Indiana high school state tournament.

THE AFTERMATH

For the losing coach, Dixon, the pain of the 1-0 loss last October was numbing. “It was a well-played game and it was a shame that someone had to lose,” he remembered. It was apparent that the team that scored first would probably win. We had our chances but didn’t get it done. It always hurts when you realize that your season is done before you get to your ultimate goal.” But despite absorbing that bitter loss, Dixon rose above the disappointment and delivered a memorable speech—to the conquerors. He spoke to Aguillon and his Eagles immediately after the game. “It was

one of the classiest moves that I have ever seen,” said Aguillon. “He told us how he was impressed with the way we played.”

Carmel where winning state championships in any sport can become a heavy expectation that borders on being a burden.

Ironically, Zionsville soon joined Carmel on the sidelines in the state tournament. Just a few days later, Avon took out the Eagles in the regional. “It was excruciating,” admitted Aguillon. “I have had some really hard losses in my career but that was the toughest one. I knew if we got past Avon, we had a real good shot at making it to state and to compete for a title. That is a game [Avon] that I don’t think I will ever be able to get past. It was that emotional for me and the rest of the team.”

“I don’t think the expectations are out of line with the other expectations in our community,” the veteran athletic director said. “It is a progressive community that values excellence and competition. I have lived here for 40 years and it has always been this way. Whether it is the performing arts, athletics or academic competitions, our students want to reach the ultimate in their endeavors.”

Schellhase concedes the last two regional setbacks [2012 and 2013] were difficult but he also has confidence winning will continue on Mulberry Street. “The girls have worked very hard to use those games as motivation,” he said. Inskeep also believes the same is true in

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO INDIANA AFTER GRADUATING FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS? “Right after school, I joined Cummins and started my career. I recently started a new job at Allison Transmission in sales and marketing.”

“Very carefully. When I lived in Memphis, I think it snowed once in 10 years. Snowy winters in Indiana are still a challenge.”

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR TEAM’S PARTICIPATION IN SOCCER CAMPS AT INDIANAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS. “We believe in community involvement, and we have done this several years. We do a week-long soccer camp for IPS students. It gives our kids a lesson in life.”

GROWING MORE THAN DINNER:

COMMUNITY GARDENS IN ZIONSVILLE It’s 8:20 a.m. on Saturday. The large field behind the Episcopal Church on Mulberry Street hums quietly with the chatter of birds and insects. As the sun breaks through the low, hazy clouds, a breeze stirs the tall grass, and dragonflies tour the meadow.

Chuck Anderson pulls into the parking lot behind the Boys and Girls Club next door, takes a couple garden tools from his car, and walks a few yards to his garden plot. “This is my first year trying this,” he comments. “We’re starting small, with beans, tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers.” He has heavy clay soil in his yard a few blocks away, and he heard the soil here was better.

In the middle of the field there are square plots marked by wire, twine, and plastic fencing. Peas, peppers, corn, cucumbers, beans, broccoli, squash and sunflowers grow in profusion.

He’s been pleased with his experience. “All the gardeners are really helpful. They share their knowledge when they can. The folks with the corner back plot, in particular, are a wealth of knowledge.”

About a mile southeast, at the town’s Elm Street Green, another community garden is growing. It’s in the broad plain at the bottom of the sloping drive that runs toward Eagle Creek. In this series of plots, patriotic pinwheels spin alongside bushy bean plants. A red watering can rests upside-down on a fence post, and coils of hoses are wound and waiting by water spigots. Zinnias and marigolds splash the site with color. Cathy Orosz parks her car, gets out, and meanders through a series of garden plots on the way to hers. She looks over things for a few moments, selects a cucumber to pick, and plucks a handful of mint. After a few more minutes enjoying the cool, quiet morning, she heads back to her car.

She stops to chat and says this is her second year with community gardening. She lives in an apartment nearby and likes having a place to grow things. An equally important benefit is the sense of fellowship she has experienced. “There’s a great group of people who garden here. It’s a little community,” she says. “The gardeners talk with each other and with people who pass by on the trail. They share garden tips, produce, and ideas.” “Gardening people are happy people,” she says as she offers me a sprig of fresh mint.

tilled each year,” Smith says, “and we put stakes in the ground with owners’ names on them.” Smith says the Parks Department has offered some form of community gardening for over 15 years. It used to offer plots behind the fire station near the CVS pharmacy on Oak Street. After that closed, they opened the Heritage Trail plots four or five years ago and the Elm Street Green gardens two years ago. At the Methodist and Episcopal churches, staff members and volunteers work together to manage the community gardens. The Methodist Church has room for 95 plots, each 20 x 20 feet. They still have a few openings, and people don’t have to be members of the church to register for one.

Like the town, the church provides water and charges a nominal fee for the space. Sarah Billings helped start the Methodist Church’s garden five years ago. “When the town’s garden behind the firehouse closed,” she says, “a couple of us started this one. I missed that garden and thought it would be nice to have something close by that my family could bike to. We started growing vegetables when our kids were young both for knowledge and for entertainment,” Billings continues. “I wanted my children to see where food comes from. The experience has led us to a better and healthier lifestyle.” The garden at St. Francis Episcopal Church, which started four years ago, has expanded from 32 plots to 68 plots. Their plots are also 20 x 20 feet with water access and

availability to the public. Pat Guiney, Parish Administrator, says their plots filled quickly this year; they were all rented by mid-May. “We are quite proud of our gardens,” she says. “We are St. Francis-in-the-Fields,” she laughs, “and we have a fairly sizable plot of land. It was a natural fit.” Guiney says their gardening program has a distinguishing feature: tithing. “One thing that makes us a little bit unique is that we ask that everyone give 10 percent of whatever they grow to someone in need. It can be a neighbor or the food bank or whomever.” They also have five service plots for the express purpose of growing food for the Zionsville Food Pantry and the Lebanon Caring Center.

Have you ever decided to take the passive position to just let someone else do the job? Chances are that these things have happened to you. And then you are faced with the really tough question of “Now what do I do?” Coach Tommy Richardson is well versed with how to deal with successes, challenges, and disappointments in order to keep moving forward toward your own personal happiness and fulfillment.

He has just had the Camden Tennessee High School football stadium named in his honor. And he is just getting started! According to Tommy, “I see a lot of people who retire and believe they are finished. They are no longer stretching themselves. But why should we quit? There is no finish line. There are more opportunities to live longer, be more engaged in life, and help other people. Age should not be a factor. There are always ways to challenge yourself.”

State Farm saw talent and determination and coaxed him to be a full-time agent in Camden and leave his football legacy. He was quickly promoted to agency manager and transferred to the south side of Indianapolis, and eventually agency director for a quarter of the state of Indiana. Life was full of excitement, challenges, and fulfillment. But then, Tommy’s wife, Peggy, passed away. He was faced with a new set of challenges in dealing with his loss and how to raise his children and their families. Tommy explained after he began dealing with his own grief, he began to take action by running several miles a day. It was during that time that he released his tears, anger, and frustration while clearing his thinking and strengthening his body. He eventually came to see that he didn’t want to sit on the bench for the rest of his life and wanted to get back in the game. He needed to be strong for the sake of his family, friends, and career. He moved back to Lafayette to become agency director, recruiting, and training with State Farm. He was later promoted to vice president at State Farm and married Cathy 17 years ago. Life was beginning to move ahead again.

Tommy began to hone his speaking skills by joining Toastmasters International. This group develops speaking and leadership skills. He began by joining a local chapter, then moved up to president of the club, then district, then national, and then, ultimately, president of Toastmasters International. He

Eventually, he took early retirement and formed Richardson Communications Group to help businesses and individuals realize their personal best. And he became a partner in a developmental company called Synergy Training with his friend Jack Klemeyer. Volunteering with our high school football organization has brought Tommy great fulfillment. He stood beside Coach McWharter for 17 years. This year beside

Coach Echeverria, Tommy is leading the coaches and players in character-building exercises. Each week, one of the coaches selects a specific character trait, such as confidence or honor, and presents the concept to the team. It's Time to Drag Race Down Main Again Z’Sparkle Party Drag Race to End Alzheimer’s is a light-hearted and fun event designed to bring people together to raise awareness about this devastating disease while raising money to support the Alzheimer’s Association.

It is an idea that began in 2010 with a sparkly dress, a lost bet and a group of friends looking for a way to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. It quickly grew into an event including dozens of brave gentlemen from right here in our own community and beyond. These brave souls, including TownePost publisher Tom Britt, have agreed to don a dress, collect donations and “run” down Main Street in the name of a very good cause on Friday, August 8. A new feature added in 2013 was the “dudettes”—women dressed as men, swaggering down Main Street for the cause. Since its inaugural year in 2010, Z’Sparkle Party Drag Race to End Alzheimer’s has raised over $100,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter. Says co-chair Amy Lacy who lost her mother to Alzheimer’s in 2010, “When we hit that mark we felt like our crazy little event had really made a difference in the fight against this horrible disease, but we want to do more—so we’re back for our fifth anniversary!” Along with the “dragstars” and “dudettes,” the event features a DJ and a special VIP tent in the Town lot at Pine and Main Streets. Opening at 7 p.m. that night, the tent,

sponsored by Zionsville Meadows, will provide an opportunity for guests to sample delicious food and spirits while meeting and mingling with the dragstars and dudettes. Microbrews, wines and signature “Sparkle-tinis” will be provided by Cobblestone Grill. Tickets are available online at zsparkledragrace.com, at Akard True Value Hardware or at the door. $12.00 online/$10.00 at Akard. The Main Street race event itself begins at approximately 8 p.m. with a parade of the participants. This event is free and open to the public, although donations are strongly encouraged. Emcees Anne Ryder and Ray Cortopassi officiate as the dragstars and dudettes strut north on Main Street to Oak Street, collecting donations. Immediately following the parade, participants will have the opportunity to compete in one of three race classes in an attempt to win a first-place crown. But in the end, instead of speed, it is the donations received that are the real “driving force” of this event. An award ceremony follows and the VIP tent party will continue after the race with more awards, music and fun. “This is really a night you’ll remember, says event Co-Chair Leigh Ann Akard, “and that’s what this is all about—memories—and putting an end to the disease that so cruelly steals them.” So please come out Friday, August 8 and support the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter while creating your own memories. “Please help us find a cure,” says Akard, adding with a laugh, “before we forget what we lost!” Please visit ZSparkleDragRace.com for more information or to make a donation. DAN DAKICH’S GOLF OUTING BECOMES A TRIBUTE TO HIS FATHER Writer / Neil Lucas Photographer / JJ Kaplan

Zionsville resident and local sports radio talk show host (1070 the fan) Dan Dakich held his 3rd annual golf outing at the Golf Club of Indiana on July 21. The past two years the outing was part of a series of events labeled as “Dan’s Summer of Fun.” However, this year, with the recent passing of Dan’s father, Tom Dakich, Dan dedicated the outing as a tribute to his father and renamed it the “Tom Dakich Memorial Golf Tournament.” Proceeds from the outing will be donated to Riley Children’s Hospital.

In true Dan Dakich style, the outing was, as always, dedicated to camaraderie and simply having a great time. However, this year it also had a more somber tone as Dan started the event by taking the microphone and thanking everyone for participating in the outing, while also expressing his heartfelt gratitude to all his friends and many listeners who were so supportive after his father’s passing. Dan mentioned that upon losing his father, who was also his best friend, he was unsure how he was going to move forward

after such a devastating loss. With the outpouring of encouragement and the stories that others shared who had lost their parents, Dan said they were instrumental in finding the strength and direction to make it through this difficult time. Needless to say a great time was had by all, and money was raised for a great cause while, clearly, Dan’s thoughts during the day did not wander far from his memories of his father.
