On any given morning, the Zionsville Rail Trail is buzzing with activity. Bikers, runners and walkers flood the pavement. Those who frequent the trail know the regulars, the ones who can be counted on to be out at the same time and with the same group of like-minded companions. Budd Glassberg is a regular. His name may be unfamiliar to some, but his polished form, bubbly personality and cheerful countenance make him a legend on the trail. He can be spotted from a distance running a fast clip with a stride that would make any coach proud. When he comes closer, his smile welcomes fellow runners. He greets strangers with a warmness typically reserved for close friends. At the age of 65, his vigor rivals those half his age. Some refer to him as the “barefoot runner.” For years, he could be seen racing along the pavement without any footwear. Now he sports thin moccasins. On a trail where Nike-wearing runners dominate, his exposed feet command attention. But Glassberg is not an attention-seeking man; he’s humble and thankful. When he is asked about his smile, Glassberg responds, “Every time I run, I’m grateful. I’m grateful I can still run.” Within the last several years, Glassberg has experienced difficult health challenges that made running impossible. At one point, he questioned whether he’d ever run again. For a man who twice ran 100 miles in a day and held the world record for a 10-mile run, the prospect of retiring from running was devastating. Glassberg was diagnosed with prostate cancer 10 years ago. He was treated with proton radiation therapy. In 2013, he experienced some negative side effects from the radiation. During the course of the next year and a half, Glassberg underwent five surgeries and 12 procedures. “I couldn’t run at all during that time,” Glassberg recounts. “It was difficult. I thought I would never be able to do anything again other than work.” After much research, Glassberg contacted a California doctor who specialized in the surgery he needed. He underwent the procedure and spent the next three months recovering. “The doctor said it was going to be difficult, and it was,” Glassberg admits.

Glassberg was told to slowly return to running. He smiles when he recalls his first run back after having a long running hiatus. “It was great,” Glassberg gushes. When Glassberg was a young boy living in Chicago, he had trouble sitting still in the classroom. Glassberg’s first grade teacher recommended medication. Glassberg’s mother disagreed and decided to “tire her son out.” She had him run a mile route to and from school everyday. Glassberg recalls trying to outrun the bus to school. Later, he ran to Wrigley Field, about six miles from his home.

Maureen, Glassberg’s wife and a former Eagle Elementary school teacher, says that her husband’s upbeat personality and passion for running is contagious. She calls Glassberg a dynamic coach.

Maureen says that her husband uses his running to better the community.

“Budd’s passion for running is so strong

“He feels everybody has a responsibility to make life better for others,” Maureen adds. “This is his way to give to the community. This is his gift. He is inspiring.”

As an adult, Glassberg admits to still struggling with sitting. Running continues to be his energy release. Glassberg prefers “further over faster.” He’s competed in 13 ultramarathons and 50-60 marathons (including two Boston Marathons). Glassberg hopes to pass on the love of running to others, especially to the next generation of runners: children. “Running is so much fun,” Glassberg proclaims. “I want others to experience it. I want to pass on the thrill of winning a race.” Glassberg coached Zionsville High School and Zionsville Middle School cross-country teams for 15 years. He also started the Anti-Mini, a half marathon informal race held in Zionsville on the same day as the 500 Festival MiniMarathon. Glassberg feels a kinship with other runners. “We’re all doing what most people consider a punishment,” Glassberg laughs. Zionsville runner Matt Kinkaid remembers running several miles with Budd over the years. “I always feel smarter and better at running after talking to Budd, ready to take on running and life’s challenges in new and innovative ways,” says Kinkaid. For the first time since late 2005, the State of Indiana is offering a tax amnesty program for eligible taxpayers, whether individuals or businesses, whether residents, part-time residents or non-residents of the state. Tax amnesty is a great opportunity to save money, eliminate penalties and interest and get a clean slate for you or your business. The amnesty program will run from September 15, 2015, through November 16, 2015. It will apply to unpaid tax liabilities for eligible taxes that were due and payable for a tax period ending before January 1, 2013. By entering into a tax amnesty agreement with the Indiana Department of Revenue, eligible taxpayers may avoid interest, penalties, collection fees or costs related to

tax liabilities that are paid in full pursuant to the amnesty program. This includes the release of tax liens once amnesty liabilities are paid in full, avoiding civil or criminal prosecution and the withdrawal of assessments, demand notices or tax warrants. A taxpayer who, on or before May 12, 2015, has established a payment plan with the Indiana Department of Revenue on amnesty eligible tax liabilities may also participate in the amnesty program. Under the amnesty program, the amount owed may be paid in full or under a payment plan, but any tax amnesty payment plan will only run through June 15, 2016, giving a taxpayer roughly seven months to pay off the amnesty-eligible tax debt. If a taxpayer participates in the amnesty program and fails to pay or otherwise

defaults on the amnesty agreement, the agreement will be voided and the taxpayer will again be subject to all penalties, interest, and costs related to the amnesty eligible liabilities that would have been incurred without the amnesty. All known taxpayers eligible to participate in the amnesty program should receive a notice of their eligibility from the Indiana Department of Revenue by first class mail no later than September 15, 2015. Finally, eligible taxpayers who fail to participate in the amnesty program or who default on an amnesty agreement shall be assessed an additional penalty on the amnesty eligible taxes owed equal to the sum of any originally assessed penalties. In other words, if you are eligible to participate in the tax amnesty program but do not, your penalties from the Indiana Department of Revenue are likely to double.

Allen serves not only as the professional face of the organization but also participates in program development and implementation. “I grew up in the inner city of Fayetteville, North Carolina,” Allen said. “My story resonates so well with the children that we impact at DREAM Alive. I spend every opportunity that I get to spend with our kids. I see so much of myself in each and every one of them. I didn’t have anyone to look up to or have someone who looked like me, who came from similar situations as me, trying to inspire me. That is why I am passionate about wanting the kids to want more in their lives. “I want them to understand that regardless of where you come from, how you were raised or who you were raised by, you can’t allow your circumstances to dictate who you who are or who you want to be. That’s what our mission is all about. Little by little, this begins to break down the barriers of their world. We take them for walks around university campuses or to a business like WTHR or a military base to expose them,so that they can begin to dream bigger. “As we continue to grow and obtain more funding, we can expand our reach and develop a model that is replicable in cities throughout the country. This has been a road previously traveled by Traders Point Christian Academy (TPCA) athletic director Adam Stevenson. In 2006, Stevenson served as an assistant coach for the first ever football team at Fishers High School. He remembers the challenging hurdles involved in building a football team that featured no returning starters and very few players with high school experience. Stevenson also recalls the pains of suffering a 1-10 record that autumn. “It can be humbling,” confessed the Hamilton Southeastern and Hanover College running back. But Stevenson also assures there is one

gigantic variation between building a football program at Fishers – a public school in the Hamilton Southeastern school district that rapidly expanded last decade – and creating one at a tiny, evangelical Christian school on the outskirts of Zionsville. “We don’t have 2,000 kids walking in the hallways,” admitted Stevenson. “Obviously, we don’t have the resources that we had at Fishers. It has been challenging, especially in football. But it is exciting when you have the opportunity to see growth in building something.” Certainly, it has been a rocky journey for Stevenson, head coach Kyle Johnson and the flock of Golden Eagles, now in their third year of competition. While Fishers

notched a winning record (6-4) in Year Two and won a state championship just four years after the one-victory inaugural season, TPCA followed a 0-8 campaign in 2013 with a 0-9 audit last season. The Golden Eagles stumbled out of the blocks this season, losing 42-8 to the Indiana Deaf School in Week One. That added up to a 0-18 record heading into last weekend’s game at Dugger Union in faraway Sullivan County. “I really believe we will win a game this season,” said Johnson. “But we’re still in the middle of building something. We have to just keep putting on our hard hats and picking up our lunch pails. It is a fun challenge.”

It could be tempting to think a conquest could come in Dugger, but the Bulldogs have survived the transition of becoming a charter school after the community of 900 had to shut down its public school in 2014. Union Dugger has over 200 students of which over 100 are males. TPCA has only 97 total students in grades 9-12 and just 45 male students. “We have to recruit the lunch room and hallways [for players],” admitted Johnson. Johnson welcomes 18-20 players per practice, depending upon injuries, illnesses or other reasons that may cause a player to be absent. Lack of depth is apparent. “We only had 14 players our first year,” said Johnson, who notes there are 55 players competing in grades 1-6 this fall. In order to accommodate workable practices, Johnson draws upon other seniors to assist in noncontact routines. “I think we all thought that the school

Now we have some experience, and we are a lot more physical.”

The four mainstays are senior tight end/ linebacker Ethan Kanzler; senior running back/linebacker Ben Wilson; junior offensive/defensive lineman Isaac Byely; and junior quarterback/defensive back Jake Johnson, a son of the coach. Johnson moved into the starting quarterback role this season.

“He is steady, but he is still learning the position,” assessed the elder Johnson. “He’s the kind of player a program needs to produce. He has improved greatly over his three seasons.” Johnson calls Kanzler “one of the school’s best athletes…he really likes to compete.” The Golden Eagles boss also believes that Wilson will eventually play college football at the Division II or III level. And the TPCA mentor is confident that there will be extraordinary news on campus when the Golden Eagles snag that first victory. “It will be fun when we get one,” said Johnson, whose Golden Eagles face a lineup of intriguing possibilities. The Hoopeston (Illinois) Cornjerkers were 0-7 last season and sacrificed 56.9 points per game; Edinburgh once lost 52 straight games; Anderson Prep Academy lost its opener 53-6 to Frankton; and Covenant Christian enters its first season on the gridiron. Meanwhile, Johnson and Co. continue the daily process in working for victory No. 1. Practice starts with a prayer, followed by a call of “family” as the huddle v breaks.

Moran clutched a donated wheelchair and readied himself to pick up an ailing stranger. He heard the man was a pastor from Sierra Leone who became gravely ill while attending Bible conferences and visiting family members in the states. That stranger was Edgar Momoh. Moran took one look at the listless figure that emerged from the airplane and assumed Momoh was dying. He rushed Momoh to a local doctor’s office. The doctor, a Zionsville Fellowship church member, opened his clinic during the New Year’s holiday just to tend to Momoh. It was later determined that Momoh

During that time, the Morans housed and nursed Momoh while he faced his myriad of medical challenges. The Morans considered it a blessing to have Momoh live in their house.

Momoh was blocked from returning to Africa due to the complexity of his health issues coupled with his prohibition on flying because of his susceptibility to clotting. Zionsville Fellowship hired an immigration attorney to reunite the family and secure Momoh’s travel visa. Diane Moran said it was an answer to prayer when Momoh’s travel visa was renewed for an unprecedented fourth time. Momoh’s visa was renewed right before it was set to expire. The visa was postmarked one day before the government shutdown. The Sierra Leone embassy granted visas for the Momoh family to enter the United States in July 2014. A GoFundMe page was created to purchase airline tickets for the family. The family left Sierra Leone shortly before the Ebola outbreak. Momoh calls this “a testament that God is faithful, and His timing and plans are inexplicable.”

The Morans treated Momoh like one of their own. “I have experienced Christian hospitality beyond measure,” Momoh asserts.

Zionsville Fellowship mobilized their finances, possessions and skills to help the family find housing and settle into a life in Indiana. Several parishioners donated household items and furniture. Private movers, who also attended Zionsville Fellowship, collected, stored and moved the items. An electrician, a church member, provided his services for free. Two church ladies made quilts for each family member.

But Momoh missed his family. It had been three years since Momoh had seen his wife Caroline and three children, Patience (age 15), Donna Joy (age 11) and Edgar James (age 8) who still lived in Sierra Leone.

More than anything, Momoh and his family were showered with prayers, love and encouragement from the church. “The church has embraced our family with love and support,” Momoh proclaimed. Moran added that other local churches and faith organizations also helped the Momoh family. College Park Church provided temporary housing. Traders Point Christian Academy welcomed the family. Momoh currently undergoes dialysis three days a week. He serves in a pastoral care role at Zionsville Fellowship. In his position, he ministers and tends to those who are sick and hurting. He says that when ailing people hear his story, they find comfort and hope. Along with his health challenges, Momoh has amazing stories of surviving near-death

experiences in his homeland. Momoh was captured by rebels during the gruesome Sierra Leone civil war in the 1990s. Momoh recalls standing in front of a firing squad when a random question from a general saved his life. He considers this “a providence of the Lord” and remembers countless other miracles that spared him from seemingly imminent death. “I really don’t know why I didn’t die. People feel God has used my life to bless them,” Momoh said. “But I’m not afraid of death; I have a hope in Christ.” Momoh calls Zionsville “heaven on earth” and gushes about the support that he and his family have received from the community. “Hoosier hospitality is a real thing,” Momoh said with a smile. “I have experienced it at every level. This is our home. This is where we’re meant to be.”

GEORGE MIDDLE EASTERN FESTIVAL The St. George Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19 for the second time at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 10748 E. 116th St. in Fishers. The church sponsored the Middle Eastern Festival for 17 years at its prior location in Indianapolis, and the newly revamped festival builds on that Middle Eastern heritage, offering many popular features of previous events. “We’re still celebrating our Middle Eastern roots, but at the same time, we’re expanding the format,” explains Brad Tirey, festival director. “In the past, it’s been just food, drinks and dance. We are adding other activities, demonstrations, cultural events and more attractions for youth, including hot air balloons and a carnival area.”

Why change the name of the festival? Parish priest Father Nabil Hanna says, “We want to honor the various other traditions of all the people who have joined and make up St. George today. We are extremely diverse. We have people of backgrounds from many countries across the world.” What’s different about this festival? “Two things,” says Father Nabil. “One is that it’s at our new location on 116th Street with a new Byzantine temple and beautiful iconography. The Indianapolis Star called it ‘the number one thing to see or do in Fishers this summer.’ We are inviting everybody to come and celebrate with us.” Tours will explain the church’s unique architecture by award-winning Architect

Christ Kamages, as well as iconography that was hand painted on the walls and ceiling by Master Iconographer Dr. George Kordis of the University of Athens, Greece. “Secondly, we are trying to make the festival a little more interactive; not to just come, buy food and sit down with music playing in the background. You are able to move around, see different things, different demonstrations, try out different things while you are here,” explains Father Nabil. What’s going to be the same as previous festivals? “Fantastic food, live entertainment and all of the welcoming people of St. George who want our guests to see what we’re about,” says Tirey. “We hope to continue the spirit of hospitality for which we have become known.”

ABOUT ST. GEORGE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH St. George Orthodox Church was established in 1926 and ministers to Orthodox Christians of a great diversity of backgrounds. It is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. After worshipping together for more than 50 years at its prior location on Sherman Drive, the parish purchased land in Fishers and built a new Byzantine-style church building. St. George’s congregation began worshipping in their new facilities in November 2013 and held the official door opening ceremony in May 2014.
