McGormley devotes herself to spreading kindness via community initiatives and kindnessmatters365.tumblr.com, a blog that documents and encourages daily acts of kindness.

A few years ago, my tween son started a dog walking business. He printed flyers advertising his services and tucked them into neighbors’ mailboxes. The next day, my son and I arrived at McGormley’s home and chatted with her McGormley confesses the root of her about her pups. kindness initiative stems from being the Within minutes of conversing with McGormley, I concluded two things: 1) She was perfectly capable of walking her own dogs, and 2) she requested my son’s dog walking services as a benevolent act to place a few dollars in a tween’s empty wallet. From our brief interaction, I immediately pegged McGormley as kind. And so, I was not surprised to learn that

recipient of kind acts, especially when she’s needed them most. She holds a deep-seated need to return the favor to others. In 2012, McGormley was a fresh transplant to Zionsville via her home state of Michigan. She was adjusting to her new hometown and new role as a stay-at-home mom to her young sons: Gavin and Paxton. McGormley pondered how best to use her time.

Joel McGormley says his wife was looking for a sense of community and a way to share their family’s experiences with intentional acts of kindness. The couple brainstormed ideas and landed on kindnessmatters365, a blog that would chronicle the family’s daily acts of kindness for a complete year. Starting January 1, 2013, the McGormley family performed a daily kindness act and documented their experience on the blog. Over the course of that year, the McGormleys adopted a soldier, visited Zionsville Meadows senior community, gave gifts to everyone from the school cafeteria lady to teachers, handed out flowers at Marsh and wrote a lot of thank you notes (among other acts). McGormley recalls their most memorable moment as the time her sons gave the school cafeteria lady a card and chocolates. “When we handed her the gift, she burst into tears and told us she was having a bad

day and needed this,” McGormley recalls. “These little acts made a difference.” Joel reports that a small kindness community arose from the blog posts. “Kate has always believed that a single act can positively affect a person, a community and the world. There is a multiplying factor, and amazing, unanticipated things can happen with very little effort or time,” says Joel. Rebecca Mills, a faithful follower of

personal struggles with mental health.

“My son and I gave his bus driver an endof-year gift this year,” Mills asserts. “I’m not sure I would have done that a few years ago.”

Since the eighth grade, McGormley has suffered from depression. At age 23, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. McGormley feels a deep-rooted responsibility to help others engaged in a similar battle.

McGormley’s blog audience voices an appreciation for her authentic and vulnerable posts, especially writings on her

I’m in a good place, and I need to be an advocate for those who are not.” McGormley recently penned a very personal blog post about suicide and severe depression. Her post was shared over 900 times, and she received numerous emails of encouragement and support from all over the country. In her past struggles with mental health, McGormley says strangers and loved ones showered her with kind acts. “When I was that vulnerable, I was so touched by that kindness and felt like I needed to give back to the world,” McGormley declares. Since 2014, McGormley has continued to blog about her family’s kind acts, although she is no longer committed to performing a daily act. This year, she’s focusing her kind acts towards her own family. “It’s a lot easier to be kind to strangers than those close to you,” McGormley admits. In addition to her blog, McGormley promotes kindness in her community work. She is a member of the kindness committee at Stonegate Elementary School and played a role in organizing the inaugural Stonegate Elementary kindness concert. Proceeds from the concert went to a charity that promotes kindness to those with disabilities. McGormley plans to continue her kindness campaign and wants others to join.

PIANO WOMAN

LOCAL OCTOGENARIAN TEACHES MUSIC AND LIFE LESSONS Writer / Rebecca Wood

For over a half century, Jeanette Vawter has taught music out of her home. Thousands of students have tapped her piano keys and strummed her stringed instruments. Preschoolers have wiggled to Vawter’s beats while doting parents share in the joy. They’ve come to learn music fundamentals from this seasoned teacher, but they’ve stayed because what Vawter teaches transcends what can be gleaned from the pages of a piano book.

the piano, dulcimer and ukulele, all she continues to play today with skill and precision. To Vawter, teaching music is a joy. She beams when describing her students, too many to count. “I love children, even when they are ornery,” she laughs. “I love to see them accomplish something and love music. There are all kinds of kids with all kinds of abilities. I’ve learned that I can always help them.”

At 85 years old, Vawter can best be described as spry. She maintains a schedule that those decades her junior would consider full. Forty students, ranging in age from preschool to adult, filter into her living room each week for music lessons. This stream began over 55 years ago.

This love of children and her passion for teaching music keeps the families coming again and again over the years.

From her home, which hugs the line between Carmel and Zionsville, Vawter has taught everything from preschool music classes to a variety of instrumental and voice lessons.

“She always encourages the children and is extremely positive,” says Seiler. “I get such a good feeling whenever I go there and whenever I talk to her. It’s a special experience that is hard to explain. I guess it just feels like my daughter is getting piano lessons from my grandmother.”

When not at home teaching music, Vawter could be found leading children in the church choir. For over 60 years, she served as a children’s choir director at a variety of churches. She just relinquished this role, but she admits an interest in returning to that position if she found the right fit. As a child, Vawter discovered music. A Hawaiian guitar was her first musical instrument. At the age of 16, she studied voice. Through the years, she’s added other musical instruments to her repertoire including

Nicole Seiler, mother to 7-year-old piano student Mia Seiler, appreciates Vawter’s kind, calm presence with her students.

Mia likes that her teacher is patient. “Even when I hit a wrong note, she doesn’t get mad or frustrated,” she says. Parents call the recitals a highlight of their experience with Vawter. Students showcase their progress and talents for an audience of loved ones. Vawter frequently performs duets with her students. She cites the “Spanish Tornado” duet as a crowd pleaser.

12 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2016 / atZionsville.com

Post performance, Vawter serves guests her special lime sherbetSprite punch coupled with a plateful of cookies. The crowd mingles and celebrates special performances and the teacher who has sharpened the skills. What marvels parents and students alike is that Vawter seems to defy any stereotype on age and a body’s need to adjust to a slower pace. Even outside her music lessons, Vawter remains active. Within the last few years, she completed a Christian counseling certification. She regularly attends two church services a weekend and a weekly Bible study.

She is a busy mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her daughter also serves as a piano teacher. When asked about her health, Vawter is happy to report her doctor regularly gives her an A+ on her medical exams. As a result, Vawter voices no plans to slow down her schedule in the near future. She says the secret to longevity is to love what you are doing. With a smile, Vawter adds, “I have to love it, or I wouldn’t do it at this age!”

LIFE’S A BEACH WHISKEY

Writer / Janelle Morrison • Photographer / JJ Kaplan

Coming soon to a liquor store near you, the smooth and exceptional Beach Whiskey brand will be debuting “re-imagined” whiskey in the Indiana markets by the end of summer. Beach Whiskey LLC Chief Executive Officer Smoke Wallin is a Carmel resident and is a well-known “serial entrepreneur.” Wallin is also CEO of Carmel-based Taliera. He has a successful track record in the beverage industry. He created Cameron Springs Company, the bottled water company that was eventually sold to Nestle Corporation in 2000. Among many of his accomplishments, Wallin was the founder of eSkye.com, a software company designed specifically for the alcohol industry. eSkye.com ended up being the largest provider of winery

production and sales software in the world and was headquartered in Carmel. It was sold to a publicly traded company from Canada in 2007.

Wallin received his BS in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University and his MBA from Vanderbilt Business School. He led the wine and spirits industry in Washington, D.C., as Chairman, President and Director of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) 19962004. He also served on the Government Affairs committee for the Craft Brewers Association. Wallin served the Young Presidents’ Organization as Chairman of the Global Beer Wine and Spirits Network for 2010-2013 and serves on the board for the Food and Beverage Network with over 1,700 CEOs. The creation and launch of Beach Whiskey has Wallin and his co-founders excited

for their “re-imagined” whiskey brand. Beach Whiskey, founded in 2015, was the collaboration of a group of entrepreneurs who represent the beverage, entertainment, lifestyle and business service industries. The initial launch and rollout of Beach Whiskey Island Coconut and Beach Whiskey Bonfire Cinnamon will first appear in the Southern California and Florida markets, and according to Wallin, it should make its debut in the Indiana markets by late summer. Wallin and his co-founders ended up raising approximately $8.5 million in their Series A round. Prior to their launch, the Beach Whiskey Facebook page had well over 30,000 “Likes”. Beach Whiskey is produced in an old Seagram’s plant in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and bottled in Louisville, Ky. “I’ve been working on lots of new brands

“We went to work on creating a new concept of whiskey that was made for the beach, for some fun in the sun and that would be relevant to the Millennial markets. My generation, Gen X, grew up in the shadow of the Baby Boomers and is a smaller generation by population. We didn’t mind drinking the volume brands that were out when we came of age. What I think makes the Millennials different and unique is that they are as big as the Baby Boomer generation. They have been brought up around technology and social media. They are savvy to having endless choices and how to access things quickly.

club bar he frequented in Santa Monica. The vodka, rum and tequila bottles were perpetually flying off of the shelves, and he wondered why not the whiskey?

“We have followed the wine and craft beer trends over the years. The spirits industry has been grossly behind beer and wine until recently. We are not a huge conglomerate.

over the years,” Wallin said. “I became interested in the whiskey category and began thinking of ways to re-imagine whiskey aside from traditional aged-whiskey that people sip on while lounging in their chair along with a cigar. I began to think of ways to make whiskey fun and relevant to today’s consumers, specifically on how to make it attractive to the next generation, Millennials.

We are an independent producer who has a different take on the market. I think that the timing has never been better to be innovative in creating new products, how we brand our products and how we reach our target markets in traditional and non-traditional ways. We have to connect in more natural and organic ways that make our consumers feel like they discovered us, and we have to make sure that we are positioned in a way that we can be discovered.” Wallin has packaged the whiskey in a way that reflects the values of Beach Whiskey. The bright and colorful sea glass bottles reflects the company’s affection for the beach and its belief in sharing the responsibility for preserving the world’s water and beaches, while promoting a fun and relaxing beach lifestyle.

WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERANS PROJECT: HONORING VETERANS WITH JILL FEWELL

Writer / Kara Reibel Photography provided

Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans is an initiative created by the Department of Defense to honor those who fought for our country during the Vietnam War. 2015-2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the homecoming of our troops from this unpopular war. Their return was far from celebrated, and these recent efforts are better late than never. Marking this historic anniversary is the creation of a Commemorative Gift to be given to all seven million Vietnam veterans with 150,000 of these brave

men and women in Indiana. The gift is the first of its kind to be given to our veterans and includes a 160-page hardbound book, feature documentary and an interactive eBook. The organization of this effort extends to the states to take on local fundraising and personalization of a portion of each book, which is a gorgeous, hardback coffee table book specific to each state. She’s a member of the World War II Roundtable, and if there is an event for veterans in central Indiana, it’s almost guaranteed she played a role in it. “It’s all about the Veterans, not me,” says Jill, who always spells Veterans with an

“After Mom died, we all began worrying more about Dad.” —Kate Weese “Having raised 10 children in our family, our Mom and Dad were always busy and very active socially, even after we all left their home. When Mom died suddenly, we knew it would be difficult for Dad to transition into a “new normal” in an empty home. With the help of all the kids, from coast to coast, we sought a retirement community that would provide Dad with a safe and active life. We all agreed Westminster Village North was our best option and to him, a perfect new home.”

Jill’s job is to bring that focus locally to fundraise in order to provide the Commemorative Gift to all 150,000 Indiana Vietnam veterans.

“It’s about time,” says Ponytail Paul Cauley, a Vietnam veteran and President of the World War II Roundtable of the long-awaited honor for those who served in Vietnam. reunions since 1995. “I used to not wear anything indicative of my service to my country, but I wear something daily that displays with honor that I served my country, and every day, I have people come up to me to thank me for my service." Cauley returned home from Vietnam in November of 1971 to a rude awakening. That year was marked by public displays of hostility towards the veterans who fought. This included horrific accounts of actions by U.S. soldiers in Vietnam by Senator John Kerry on Capitol Hill and anti-war protests across the country, culminating in the killings of protestors on Kent State campus. Cauley noticed sentiment was changing a couple decades ago during Desert Storm, and the U.S. was starting to support our military. That’s when he began to proudly wear evidence of his service. Indiana is an early adopter state for the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans effort; however, many states have raised their funds and are distributing the Gift. In Mississippi, their Governor is spearheading the effort. Clearly an important effort by all states, the support for this project is unsurpassed. “We hope to experience a similar success in Indiana,” says Jill, who is hopeful that our State Legislature will create a bill allocating a portion of the necessary funding. Upcoming Vietnam veterans events include the Kokomo Healing Fields reunion in September, which is the largest of its kind. SUE ELLSPERMANN IS LEADING BY EXAMPLE Writer / Kara Reibel Photography provided

We teach what we’ve been taught. We help others in the manner that we have experienced. Sue Ellspermann shares her mentors and those who have impacted her life along with her plans for leadership of Indiana’s largest public postsecondary institution and the largest singly-accredited statewide community college system in the entire country. The new President of Ivy Tech Community College, Sue Ellspermann hails from the beautiful town of Ferdinand where she’s lived since the age of 2. One of six children, Sue and her two sisters worked in their father’s small jewelry store after school and on weekends through high school.

Ferdinand,” shares Sue, who confided only in Sister Kathy, aside from her husband, Jim, about the upcoming Lt. Governor run for office. The St. Benedict rules consist of community, prayer, hospitality and work. “Sister Kathy helps me to remain grounded.” While serving as Lt. Governor, Sue became involved with the Indiana Conference for Women. Now as a member of their Advisory Committee, Sue continues to promote the conference across the state. Conference co-founder Billie Dragoo served on an Indiana Bicentennial committee with Sue for “Big Ideas,” which not only celebrates Indiana, but it provides a strong vision looking forward to our next 100 years of statehood. The full reveal of this plan will be announced in September.

While studying industrial engineering at Purdue, Sue’s keen interest in unstructured problem-solving and strategic planning began. While working for Frito Lay in Dallas, she met Dr. Min Basadur, a thought leader in the applied creativity realm of corporate innovation. “Dr. Basadur became not only a mentor, but after leaving Frito Lay, I joined him as a consultant on a colleague level,” shares Sue. Basadur was the founder of the process she used, and it was his research that provided the foundation Sue expanded upon through her own consultation experience. While Sue was building her consultancy business, another key mentor was Kathy Kleindorfer. “Kathy was an excellent leader,” says Sue. “She emphasized the importance of under-promising and over-delivering.” Sue’s first big client was Kimball International. Jim Thyen, CEO of Kimball International, had a leadership style that Sue admired. “He always did the right thing, even if that meant lowering profits in lieu of laying off workers,” states Sue of Thyen. “He took care of people and was not overly focused on the profit motive.” Later, Thyen would serve as a friend and trusted advisor while Sue was making the decision to run for State Representative. After 20 years of consulting and strategic planning, Sue founded and served as Director of the Center for Applied Research and Economic Development at the University of Southern Indiana. Shortly after leaving this position, Sue received a call from then-Congressman Pence to be his Lt. Governor. “My spiritual director is Sister Kathy Huber (member of the Huber Winery family) and a Prioress with St. Benedict’s Monastery in TownePost.com / JULY 2016 / INDY METRO

“I am beyond excited that one of my initiatives for women was considered,” says Dragoo, who recently attended The Global Entrepreneurship Summit with President Obama and other international business leaders. “Billie is an amazing leader and role model,” says Sue of Dragoo, who also serves as CEO of RepuCare. “I feel very strongly that

the Indiana Conference for Women is an excellent opportunity for women to network and get inspired to do more.” Speaking of doing more, as President of Ivy Tech, Sue brings with her a powerful agenda designed to facilitate success for their students. As Lt. Governor, she served as Vice Chair of the Indiana Career Council, which focuses on aligning

education with workforce needs. The committee set the goal of 60 percent of our Hoosier workforce having postsecondary credentials/degrees by 2025. This means an additional one million Hoosiers need to skill up, and the bulk of those degrees will come from community colleges, such as Ivy Tech. Currently, there are 20,000 graduates with certificates and/or associate degrees from Ivy Tech Community College each year. That number needs to more than double to meet the goal. Sue intimately understands the needed flexibility with earning degrees. It took her eight years of commuting to Louisville from Evansville to complete her doctorate in industrial engineering. A high level of patience and persistence, along with family support, carried her through. The importance of increasing flexibility for degree completion, accompanied with courses that assist with skilling up our workforce such as Ivy Tech’s partnership with Eleven Fifty Academy, are a few ways Ivy Tech is working to elevate the graduation rate for their students.

“There will be one million tech jobs in 2020,” says Eleven Fifty Academy President John Qualls. “The number is staggering, and the opportunity is there for students to enroll in coding classes. The partnership with Ivy Tech opens the door for students to reach their potential and bridge this gap.” At various growth stages of Sue’s life, she has had the pleasure of being around inspiring mentors. She believes strongly in giving back and in being a mentor to others. Before leaving office as Lt. Governor, Sue left a legacy by being a part of many amazing programs. CONQUERING LIFE AND THE OCEAN’S SEVEN

Writer / Janelle Morrison

The quest began more than 25 years ago when Zionsville resident Jim Barber decided that he wanted to become part of an elite group of swimmers to achieve the Ocean’s Seven. The Ocean’s Seven consists of seven long-distance open-water swims and is considered the marathon swimming equivalent of the Seven Summits mountaineering challenge. The challenge includes the English Channel, Catalina Channel, Strait of Gibraltar, Molokai Channel, Cook Strait, Tsugaru Strait and the North Channel. Barber has completed three of the seven swims upon first attempt. He is preparing for his fourth, the Cook Strait in the Southern Hemisphere.

Photographer / JJ Kaplan

Swimming began as a means to escape childhood bullying for Barber. As a young child, Barber had a hearing disability that went undiagnosed until he was 10 years old. He began swimming at his local YMCA at age 9 where he found peace and purpose. It turned out that he was quite gifted at the sport, and as he puts it, he became the “Forest Gump of swimming” in his town. Barber said, “You can’t hear anybody, and you don’t have to speak to anybody when your head is in the water.” Barber and his swimming coach, “Coach B,” would train at the YMCA and throughout his school years where Barber gained much

recognition as an accomplished swimmer. “When I started excelling at swimming, it turned me into a different person,” Barber said. “Instead of being bullied, I was being recognized for being an athlete. Coach B was one of the best coaches that I ever had. He and I remained in contact until his passing two years ago. He developed solid and sound-minded athletes. Today, I find motivation in what I call the 3 Ns. I live by them. First, never go it alone; surround yourself with people who will support you. Second, never give up; you have to look at each day that is a loss as an opportunity to learn from and keep going forward. Lastly, nothing great comes easy.”

“IT IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY. ANYBODY CAN PHYSICALLY GET READY FOR AN ATHLETIC EVENT, BUT IT’S THE MENTAL PART THAT KEEPS THEM FROM DOING IT.” A typical training routine for one of these swims runs about 12 weeks long. Barber will swim 60 miles a week. The training includes spring and fall acclimations to prepare his body for acclimating in cold water. Most of the ocean waters that Barber swims in are below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. His typical caloric intake and burn is between 4,5006,000 calories. “It is important to take care of your body,” Barber emphasized. “Anybody can physically get ready for an athletic event, but it’s the mental part that keeps them from doing it. In anything that you want to pursue, 40 percent of it is getting your body ready for it, and the other 60 percent is attitude and telling yourself, ‘Yes, I can do this.’ “I question myself some days on why I do this. I wake up and wonder why I am going to go swim across this stupid body of water? Then when I get into the thick of it, I recommit to what I am about to do and tell myself that I am going to get through it. When I’m in the middle of these swims, out in the middle of nowhere with my crew a half-mile ahead of me, I start thinking about the pain that I’m dealing with and about how other people in my life endured their pain. If they got through theirs, I’m going to get through mine.” Each swim has an association that governs the body of water. Barber has a contact person who serves as the representative of the respective association. The representative coordinates the boats, crews and witnesses. Witnesses are required on

these swims to ensure that the swimmer is obeying the rules and regulations established and to document the swim.

with hand signals to effectively communicate through the course of the swim.”

Barber completed the English Channel (England to France) in a tandem solo with Brian Boggs, also a Zionsville resident. They completed the 21 miles in 9:06 hours. The fastest recorded time is 7 hours. Barber pointed out that this swim has a fairly high failure rate with a 30 percent success rate. He added that this is the one swim that most people want to complete as a right of passage as long-distance or marathon The light source is intentionally limited so as swimmers. not to attract any of the predatory creatures lurking in the same waters as Barber. Among the many challenges that Barber has endured throughout his career swims, he “I swim up to the boat to get water and occasionally has to contend with the wild liquid nutrition by a hand toss back and life that is swimming along with him. It was pretty freaky. The boat was ¼ mile up front, and the kayaker stayed back with me. Basically, I didn’t see anything except for the light off of the back of the boat.”

Next on his list, Barber will be preparing to cross the Cook Strait in 2017. It is 14 miles between North and South New Zealand. “This one will be the most dangerous and most unpredictable waters out of all of them,” Barber said. “It is so far in the Southern Hemisphere that the tides are constantly dramatically changing. There is an abundance of predatory fish and sharks in this region as well. One of the first questions I asked was if anyone has ever been pulled out for shark attacks, and the answer is no, not to this day.” Looking ahead, Barber plans to complete the Tsugaru Strait in Japan and complete his quest by crossing the North Channel. The North Channel will be the coldest waters at 54-58 degrees Fahrenheit. For now, Barber will continue to train at his local pool and in various bodies of water in Indiana such as Morse Reservoir.

Provided by Jim Barber

“We’ve got a good opportunity, if anyone is interested in training for marathon swimming, to train here at some of the bodies of water in Indiana,” Barber said. “I am 56 years old, and I want to maintain my health and want to be able to do these swims for a long time to come.” In his spare time, Barber owns a remodeling and improvements business, Housewurks Custom Homes and Renovations . The

discipline and perseverance that he exudes in his swims are applied in every aspect of his life, personally and professionally. He is extremely goal-oriented. “I treat my projects like I do my swims,” he concluded. “I’m not finished until I get out on the other side of it. I think that it’s important in our daily lives to have a set of objectives and goals. You have to wake up to something.”

A SUMMER GUIDE TO BETTER HEALTH Writer / Stephanie Carlson Miller

Do you want to feel energetic? Prevent illness? Ease chronic pain? Relieve stress? Remove toxins and heal naturally? Get moving on the path toward improving your quality of life by transforming your mind, body and spirit. Dive into goal setting and commit to wellness, a habit-forming, motivating way to live a more balanced and productive life. Regardless of your current level of fitness or age, from young mothers and seniors to cancer patients and those who suffer from serious ailments, a community of competent coaches and specialists are lined up to help jumpstart your sprint or marathon race to a healthy lifestyle.

TEAM FIT LIVIN’

“Support and accountability creates a platform for success,” says Matt Shade, founder of Team Fit Livin’ who firmly believes individuals are responsible for taking ownership of their health. “In my 20 years as a personal trainer, I found that being part of a community of support encourages and motivates people, especially those who might feel intimidated or unsure of what activity to participate in. We organize group workouts, swims, runs, training rides, team racing and social events,” Shade said. “Whether your goal is to run your first 5K or you dream of completing an Ironman triathlon, crossing the finish line is inspiring at any level.”

INWELLIGENT

Inwelligent is a unique healthcare clinic that delivers personalized holistic wellness solutions including therapeutic yoga, Pilates,

acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition counseling, health coaching and corporate wellness programs. Many services may be covered by health insurance. Practitioners collaborate closely with physicians to integrate care complementary to other treatments. The clinic is open to everyone and offers the most successful clinically-tested therapeutics. Practitioners work with patients and individuals to customize personalized plans for overall healthy lifestyle experiences. “Yoga’s benefits extend across the spectrum of human need,” according to Emily Frank, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine and bone health at St. Vincent and yoga instructor at Inwelligent located in the St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center. “The care of a patient means to help them with their entire wellbeing. My class targets the older individual who might have concerns about their bones or joints. I use a multi-faceted approach to keep my patients upright, moving and injury-free. The benefits are nearly immediate and far-reaching.” Kate Downes, licensed acupuncturist and trained in life sciences, integrated and herbal medicine, administers acupuncture at Inwelligent’s clinic. This form of traditional Chinese medicine stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities using thin needles applied to specific points on the body. “Acupuncture improves blood flow and circulation that heals tissues throughout the body, reversing the negative effects of stress,” Downes said. “I really get to the root of the issue by getting to know my patients. Fertility issues, pain, stress relief, digestive problems, sleep deprivation, weight loss and more, my goal is to help your system function properly.” To get a better understanding of the benefits of acupuncture, Downes shares her expertise at katedownesacu.com. Downes works closely with oncologists to determine proper treatments for cancer patients and with obstetricians to implement plans that help pregnant women find relief from the stress of growing a human prior to delivery. In fact, Inwelligent’s mission is to build partnerships with hospitals and healthcare providers in order to complement a patient’s treatments, thus enhancing their ability to heal from an illness or injury and calm anxieties. “Modern science has clearly demonstrated the relationship between physical activity and good health,” explained Joan O’Kane, a certified yoga instructor. “Yoga takes this understanding a step further by explaining that even a few moments of yoga allow the central nervous system to shift from ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest, heal, and digest.’” Ancient yogis knew this, and modern scientists and medical professionals now agree. “At Inwelligent, we blend Eastern medicine with traditional Western practices, treating acute conditions and providing people, in general, with well-rounded health solutions.”

BODY OUTFITTERS

KOKO FIT CLUB

Like Inwelligent, Body Outfitters, located in downtown Zionsville, also takes a one-on-one approach to taking care of clients. Personal trainer Mark Moreland believes people who are strong and healthy are able to more fully engage in life. “Skilled coaches are effective and hold you accountable,” Moreland said. “Programming encompasses all areas of fitness designed specifically to suit the individual’s needs and goals.” Considering the variety of wellness opportunities, Indianapolis (including Carmel and Anderson) ranks as the least fit city out of 50 metropolitan areas across the nation in the 2016 American College of Sports Medicine American Fitness Index. The data in this report reveals “a composite of personal health measures, preventative behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions as well as environment and community resources and policies that support physical activity.” The Scientific Snapshot of the State of Health and Fitness at the Metropolitan Level is available at americanfitnessindex.org/report.

Koko Fit Club also closely watches workouts using technology to coach. The club is nothing like traditional gyms. A quiet studio encourages members to engage in short 45-minute workouts tailored to desired fitness accomplishments. Coined Smartraining, the facility features around-the-clock access to audio-coached fitness sessions and guided, high-intensity interval training that automatically tracks and records progress, emailing results after each workout. According to certified FitCoach H.B. Hayes, the gym was founded to change lives – to help people get fit and stay fit. “Smartraining encompasses three components: strength training, cardio and custom nutrition plans,” says Hayes, describing a 13-week program that teaches healthy habits that enable people to train their minds to make healthy living a way of life. “In 30 days, our clients feel so much better without enduring the intimidation of a traditional gym setting. Fit checks measure lean muscle and Enhanced BMI early on to motivate, create accountability for personal fitness and gauge success of each individual.”

In addition to individual health, Inwelligent and Fit Livin’ believe in engaging corporations in wellness solutions, promoting preventative healthcare maintenance, overall fitness, lower healthcare costs and improved productivity for their employees. “The longer term benefit is you lead by example, and making this world a better, healthier place is inspiring,” Shade said. The Art of Artomobilia Writer / Janelle Morrison • Photographer / Anthony Ross Tyler

Each year, Artomobilia features a distinct gathering of collector cars, automotive enthusiasts and recognized artists that are showcased on the streets of the Carmel Arts & Design District. Artomobilia boasts one of the most eclectic gatherings of original period-correct automobiles anywhere, including Supercars, Exotic, Sports Cars, Classics, Racers, Historically Preserved, Indiana Built, Sedan/Coupe and more. The event brings in an estimated 20,000 spectators and enthusiasts into the heart of the city of Carmel. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 27 and feature approximately 400 cars, an impressive array of musical talent performing at the West and East stages, a plein air painting event that spectators can watch and a live photo shoot exhibition with internationally renowned photographer Anthony Ross Tyler.

CAPTURING THE ART OF METAL

Each year, the Artomobilia celebrates automotive art and design, and there are few photographers that more clearly capture this than internationally recognized photographer Anthony Ross Tyler. Tyler will be shooting the Artomobilia Best in Show and the Artomobilia Penultimate. He will be taking reservations from select car owners that wish to have their car photographed before, during or after the Artomobilia August 27. Tyler will present a “live photo shoot” exhibition throughout the day that features both his past work as well him actively applying his art. Those who wish to

participate in the exhibition will be parked in a group near the Main stage, and their cars will be individually photographed in an “industrial” setting. “Having attended numerous shows, I can say that Artomobilia is unique because it blends the art and the engineering in a way that I have never seen any other show do,” Tyler said.

EXHIBITS EN PLEIN AIR

The Carmel Artomobilia is designed to celebrate automotive art and design, and there’s no better way to do celebrate this than to highlight recognized, as well as up-and-coming, artists and their work. In 2015, Artomobilia and the Hoosier Salon partnered to feature a plein air paint-out and invited a collection of Indiana arts to paint in and around the cars of the Artomobilia.

Tyler, a resident of Nashville, Tennessee, has family in Greenwood and visits Indianapolis often. Through contacts and associations made over the years, Tyler was connected with John Leonard, and the two began brainstorming a new concept to include during Artomobila. “John and I wanted to encapsulate the art form of the car as well as what I am trying to do when I shoot photography and put it into an event-type of stature that felt right for the show,” Tyler explained. “We came up with the expedition concept. It is a totally new concept for me and so not what I typically do, and that’s what makes it cool. It is highly experimental, and I have no idea which way this will go, but that again is part of the fun and excitement. “I will have my examples of my large print work that I do for my commercial and private-owner clients. I will also have a few hardbound books of my work, so that people can see what I do. I’ll spend approximately 30-45 minutes on each car and will produce roughly four images per car out in the open, so that people can watch it all happen. Hopefully, they will enjoy watching the process.” Learn more about Anthony Ross Tyler and see more of his work at arosstyler.com. 34 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2016 / atZionsville.com

The work of Wyatt LeGrand was selected for our annual commissioned painting to be used on our poster and program cover. For 2016, the Artomobilia will feature a number of artists and their art in the months preceding the show as well as on the day of the show. Jim May, Executive Director of the Hoosier Salon, spoke about the positive effect being a part of this event has had on the salon. The Hoosier Salon is a statewide nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to create an appreciation of visual art by promoting Hoosier artists and is located in the heart of Artomobilia in the Arts and Design District. “We’re right in the middle of it,” May enthused. “The event envelopes us, and with a crowd of over 15,000 people essentially at our front door, it is a great opportunity

for us. We prop open our doors and invite everybody in to see the selected images of vehicles and cars that we put on display and attract the specific audience that is there. We had our highest grossing Saturday during the event last year and sold 25 works that morning. I hand-picked the artists for last year’s plein air, invitation only. “This year, I’m going to open it up and broaden it to 20-25 artists. We are focused on artists that are really interested in the event itself and want to participate. Being a part of community events like Artomobilia and being positioned as an asset in the community is important to us. We are a not-for-profit who serves artists all over the state, but we really want to be involved in this community and want people to enjoy coming here. It helps us in the long run and opens doors for us beyond the gallery.”

We coach them and work with them on developing their own performance style. We are a one-stopshop for individuals and companies who need a presence and any of the services that we provide.

“I first became involved with Artomobilia through a dear friend of mine, Terry CeaserHudson, who is the Executive Director for the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund. The Indiana Children’s Wish Fund is the beneficiary of the Fuelicious fundraising event hosted by John Leonard and his team the night before Artomobilia. She connected me with John, and we immediately hit it off. I like working with him. The great thing about John Leonard is that he thinks outside of the For more information on the Hoosier Salon, box, inside of the community. visit hoosiersalon.org. “It came to pass that ADC ended up handling all of the entertainment, stage BEHIND EVERY GREAT CAR set up, etc., for both Artomobilia and ARE GREAT SONGS AND Fuelicious. Last year was our first year doing Fuelicious, and it was great. There were a lot MEMORABLE NIGHTS of things that we liked about it and things Locally owned Artist Development Company (ADC) does just that. It develops that we found out that we could do different to make it even better. For example, this artists and produces local events with precision and expertise. ADC was founded year at Fuelicious, there has been great collaboration on some new ideas, and one by Carmel’s own Blair Clark. “When they pull a fish out of the water, it will be attached to a prize. It could be a big screen TV or perhaps a trip somewhere. It depends on what kind of donations we get, but it will be a lot of fun. We are really excited about that activity. The music aspect of these events is, of course, my passion, and it has been great experience for me to be able to contact phenomenal musicians and give them work opportunities. “This year, we’ll have a bluegrass band playing on one of the stages at Artomobilia. Fun Factor will be performing as well as a solo artist. My band, the Blair Clark Band, will be performing at Fuelicious, and Mark Armstrong, a saxophonist, will be playing as the cars drive up to the Lucas Estate.” As a longtime resident and business owner in Carmel, it is important to Clark to support local businesses, artists, musicians and organizations. “For me, it’s very important that we constantly feed the community and the community element, keeping it innovative and entertaining.”
