Indiana may be a landlocked state, but there’s still a place in town where you can find topnotch seafood from around the world. “There are a lot of people who still think you can’t get good fish in the Midwest,” says Andrew Caplinger, owner of locally-based

Caplinger’s Fresh Catch seafood markets. “The fact of the matter is you can get fish as good or better than what you’re gonna get on the coast.” Having worked in the fish business since his teenage years, Andrew started Caplinger’s Fresh Catch at East 75th Street and Shadeland Avenue in December 2013 with his father Nick Caplinger and wife 6 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atZionsville.com

Courtney Caplinger. Since the original store’s quick success, however, Andrew has opened two more locations of the seafood market — one in Noblesville and one (most recently) in Zionsville at 6685 Whitestown Parkway. A ’98 graduate of Ben Davis High School, Andrew dreamt about starting his own seafood market at a very early age, while also

working with his father at the well respected 56th Street Fish Market. “When I was in high school, there was a marketing club that was called DECA,” Andrew says. “I put a business plan together that was actually for a fish market and restaurant. So I’ve wanted to do this forever.” Andrew now estimates that there’s about 70 years of seafood industry experience between he and his father.

“We deal with some of the highest quality seafood vendors in the industry,” Andrew says. “You don’t come across a lot of legitimate fish guys. So, when it comes to the product they [the vendors] are going to send us, they know it always has to be the best of the best.” As for their recent expansion to Boone County, Andrew explained he had no intention of opening the Whitestown Parkway location until he actually visited

the space for a tour. “I got a phone call from Midland Atlantic, which is the management company that owns the center we’re in there in Whitestown, and they said, ‘Hey. We don’t know if you’re looking to do expansion or anything, but we’ve got this spot that we’re going to need leased,” Andrew says. “I didn’t even say anything to my dad or my wife because I just figured, ‘This isn’t going to be anything, but I’ll go look just to get an idea

of what’s out there,’” he says.

BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.

Much to his surprise, the space was a perfect fit, and it’s location seemed appealing as well. “This spot is so open, and it has so much space where people are actually able to move around and look at stuff and not necessarily be in everybody’s way while they’re doing it. That was a huge, huge benefit to it,” Andrew says. “All of the growth that’s going on in the area made it extremely attractive too.” His decision was further validated upon moving into the location. “The response that we got from everyone in Whitestown and Zionsville both was just amazing,” Andrew says. “I’ve never gotten the reaching out from local people that we got when we were coming to open up there.”

In the coming years, Andrew and company are looking to open a fourth Caplinger’s location at the Bottleworks project in Downtown Indianapolis. In the meantime, the plan is to continue providing customers with any and all of the seafood they need, whether they’re eating it at the in-store Caplinger’s restaurant or taking it home to prepare in their own kitchen. “We get deliveries every single day, so if somebody wants something, we can get it in there for them typically by the next day,” Andrew says. “When customers come in, I always tell ‘em, ‘Whatever you want, let us know, and we’re gonna make it happen for ya.’”

and President, Toomie Farris, makes it all happen. Joining the company in 1980, Farris has seen the business through a complete cycle of economic phases and ownership phases. The floral giant was started by Bob McNamara in 1954, who still sits on the company’s board today. Through the years, McNamara Florist has gone from a privately held company to family held to publicly held to private equity and back to privately held when Farris bought the business in 2007. It’s ridden the roller coaster of economic upticks and downturns, including the most recent one in 2008. Farris has also weathered the storm. Joining the company as a store manager, Farris was delighted at the opportunity to leave his job in Iowa, move to Indianapolis and put

his horticulture degree to work. Flexing his floral muscle, he electrified customers with his innovative floral designs. “I developed my passion for flowers growing up on a farm in Missouri,” Farris says. “Both sets of my grandparents had lots of flowers around and I always loved it. But as I grew up, I became interested in medicine. My parents talked me out of it, so flowers it was.” When landscaping company, Engledow, bought McNamara, he spent time with them. From that springboard, Farris flourished, launching Enflora, the brand specifically for businesses. Through Enflora, businesses can buy flowers for special events or occasions, rent elaborate seasonal displays, decorate and beautify their common areas, or even for gifts or recognition. The brand still thrives today, and is a major part of McNamara’s seasonal

decoration operations for hotels, restaurants Since buying the company in 2007, Farris has nurtured the company like his flowers. and other corporations. “We’ve been fortunate to be a part of so many exciting events like the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Gala for decades, and the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital Gala,” Farris says.

“I feel about the McNamara brand the same way you would on a farm,” he says. “You care for it and nurture it because you have to leave it just as good or even better than the way you found it.”

Eventually, Engledow sold McNamara and Enflora to Marsh, and Farris became head of floral fashions for 60 stores. Throughout all of it, he’s maintained an unshakable loyalty to McNamara Florist that has kept him there for more than 37 years.

Farris has kept McNamara the way he found it with one simple strategy. As one customer wisely told him, people buy flowers from people.

“There were times I knew things were changing,” Farris says. “I’ve seen retail stores dwindle from 28,000 to under 15,000 since 2000. But I know the brand and I have a lot of years and experience invested, so, I’m going to do what it takes to keep the business moving forward.”

“We’re just good old folks doing business with Hoosiers,” he says. “We want to be there for you during the important and emotional times in your life. Whether it’s a happy or sad time, it’s an appropriate time to send flowers.” McNamara’s strategy of relationship building shows in the way they give friendly,

personalized service, in conveniently accessible locations (especially online 24 hours a day). “We still do stems and other cash and carry orders,” Farris says. “But, when it comes to a special occasion like a birthday or Valentine’s Day, you need someone experienced in design. It’s like the difference between a burger on the grill or a filet.” But McNamara doesn’t just focus on high end. Their designers put a lot of effort into offering a wide variety of bouquets for under $20. “We offer bouquets for $150, $20 and everything in between,” Farris says. “Customers tell us it’s worth it. That’s good to hear, because we want it to be worth their time to come into our store.” While McNamara is settling into its new headquarters, Farris is looking ahead to the future. He says the outlook is strong, but he plans on looking for opportunities to evolve and improve.

ZIONSVILLE NATIVE CORY HAFFNER FINDS HIS STRIDE AS SKY ZONE OWNER that he struck with owning his own company and being able to make his own schedule and have time for family rubbed Even as a youngster, Noblesville native Cory off on me,” Haffner says. “I consider myself Haffner had an inkling as to what kind of kind of a serial entrepreneur, and I think he career path he wanted to embark on. inspired me to take that approach.” Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Observing the career progression of his father, who owned Haffner X-Ray Company (HXR), a medical sales, equipment and installation firm, Haffner appreciated the flexibility and allowance for family time that his position afforded. “He always had time to coach my sports teams growing up, and I think the balance

After finishing high school, Haffner went on to play basketball for Danville Area Community College in Illinois before finishing a management and marketing degree at Purdue. Haffner isn’t the only athletic member of his family – his dad played ball at Butler, and his brother Scott played for two years in the NBA after a celebrated college career at the University

of Evansville in the late 1980s. Scott broke UE’s single-game scoring record in 1989 when he dropped 65 points against Dayton – a record that still stands almost 30 years later. “I’m probably the worst player in my family, but in my case that’s still not that bad,” Haffner says with a laugh. “Pretty soon after playing a little in college I knew that entrepreneurship was more my calling.” Haffner joined HXR in a sales capacity after graduating in 1995, and bought the company from his father not long after. For the next eight years he ran HXR while

garnering further entrepreneurial experience through co-ownership of several businesses including pest control and air freshener companies, and was voted into the Indianapolis Business Journal’s top “Forty Under Forty” in 2010. In 2012 Haffner sold HXR to a national firm and found himself with the capital and desire to begin a new professional challenge. A fateful round of golf with a friend set him on a course that would combine his entrepreneurial passion and fondness for athletics. “This friend of mine had gotten involved with Sky Zone pretty early on, and he knew I was selling my business,” Haffner says. “We were talking casually on the golf course, and he suggested I might want to take a look at it.” Before long Haffner had done some exhaustive research on Sky Zone, a worldwide indoor family entertainment chain with connected trampolines and various activities like dodgeball and basketball, and he and a business partner decided to purchase the company’s Fishers location in early 2013. “It’s been fun, and we’re constantly trying to find ways to improve our operation,” says Haffner, adding that the Fishers Sky Zone received the National Sky Zone WOW Award in 2015 for best overall location in America.

Cory Haffner and his wife Mandi moved to Zionsville in 2015.

Haffner was confident enough in the Sky Zone business model to build a new location in Schererville just one year after acquiring the Fishers business, and last year he applied a few upgrades to both spots including a Warrior Course, which takes a cue from the popular “American Ninja Warrior” television show, a Warped Wall with platforms of varying heights, and Sky Joust, which takes place on pedestals over a foam pit. His locations now also feature lounges with wifi and additional rooms for private functions. “We’re wanting to age up our 14 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atZionsville.com

demographic a little bit to where we’ve got more than just younger kids and teens,” Haffner says. “You’ve got the 20-somethings and 30-somethings and even the parents of the kids wanting to participate now. We do corporate team-building events and sometimes they need a lot of space, so the additions will help with that.”

sports you can likely find him rooting on Purdue or Butler’s basketball squads. “The Sky Zone allows me to make my own schedule, and I’m usually busy coaching whatever sport my daughters throw at me,” he says. “My dad coached all my stuff, and I enjoy doing a lot of that for my kids now too.”

Still a big sports fan, Haffner spends much of his non-work time coaching his daughters’ sports teams (Lydia, 12, Vivian, 11, and Isla, 7), and if he’s not coaching

Haffner and his wife Mandi relocated to Zionsville in 2015 after spending several years in his hometown of Noblesville, and the couple has come to appreciate the sense

of community that pervades much of Indy’s north side. “I loved growing up in Noblesville, and I’m thankful I was raised in that small-town community type of setting,” he says. “I like the fact that Zionsville reminds me a lot of where I grew up. In many ways Noblesville will always feel like home to me.” Sky Zone in Fishers is located at 10080 E 121st. St #182. Visit them on Facebook or give them a call at 317-572-2999.

Warren Rosenthal is now speaking up on the dangers of low-head dams after surviving a life-changing kayaking incident.

White River Kayak Accident Survivor Warns Against Low-Head Dams Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Jamie Sangar

It was a bright, beautiful day last July 9 when Warren Rosenthal and his buddy, Lawrance Morrissey, decided to kayak a 15-mile stretch of the White River. Being well-versed in the dangers of lowhead dams, the men planned to portage around it. It had recently rained up north, however, which caused the water to move more swiftly and carry them faster than anticipated. Within seconds, the pair found themselves going over the dam, and Rosenthal, a 3-year kayaking veteran, knew they were in trouble. “They aren’t called drowning machines for no reason,” says Ken Smith, Assistant Director for the Division of Water with the Indiana DNR. “They’re notorious for hundreds of deaths nationwide.” Robert Barr, IUPUI Research Scientist with the Center for Earth &

Environmental Science, says that what makes these low-head dams so deadly is the hydraulic jump that occurs as the water breaks over the surface of the dam. “It drops down and develops a gyre,” Barr says. “[It creates] a spinning like a washing machine at the bottom of that, like a circulating current.”

about finding an escape route when trapped in this specific situation. If he could curl up, dive to the bottom of the river, and swim downstream, he could emerge beyond the boil and essentially escape the riptide that kept sucking him back under. He stripped off his life jacket and took a breath.

“Call it divine intervention, but I felt like I was pushed down into the water about 20 feet,” Rosenthal says. “I could see the water—all bubbly like it was carbonated, Rosenthal knew that survival wasn’t and the sun was shining through it, which dependent upon his swimming skills. oriented me. My first thought was, ‘I don’t “You can be Michael Phelps and you’re not know if I can hold my breath this long.’” swimming out of that,” Rosenthal says. “The He’d already been furiously treading water, gasping for air, and fighting for his life for water always wins.” 15 minutes, leaving him utterly exhausted. He floated to the top and realized he was Tossed from their kayaks, the men out of the boil and was going down river were repeatedly churned around in the with the current. He grabbed hold of a log turbulent water. jam and held on until rescuers snatched him out of the river. Tragically, Morrissey “We were barely able to breathe so it was impossible to talk,” says Rosenthal, who, in a perished in the accident, leaving behind a critical moment, recalled an article he’d read wife and three children. 18 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atZionsville.com

Rosenthal, who has a wife, Stephanie, daughter, Sydney (17), and son, Rock (14), was in the hospital for six days. Though he didn’t sustain a single scratch, he describes the aftermath as feeling like he’d been thrashed by a team of 15 men. What he took away from the accident was a determination to spread the word about the danger of low-head dams. Now, he meets monthly with a group called the Silver Jackets, which consists of professors, DNR employees, members of homeland security, and others who are passionate about knocking down or modifying these dams so that they no longer present a danger. Unfortunately, since it costs $150,000 to remove a low-head dam and thousands are scattered across the country (with 150 in the state of Indiana), at the very least, the Silver Jackets would like to see warning signs posted along river banks to educate and warn the public. “It isn’t impossible to live if you get caught in the hydraulic of a lowhead dam, but it’s highly unlikely,” says Lt. Terry Hyndman, Executive Officer with the Indiana DNR, Law Enforcement Division. “I’m a rarity to have survived,” says Rosenthal, franchise owner of FibreNew, a company that provides leather, plastic and vinyl furniture restoration. He just contributed to a video segment for WFYI that’s geared toward 18- to 24-year-olds — the age group that’s most susceptible to perishing from low-head dam accidents. These days more people recreate on the river without getting the proper training. As a result, many don’t realize that going over a low-head dam is most likely a death sentence. “Think about it. Would any of us kayak over a dam if we knew about the killer that was waiting for us on the other side?” Hyndman says. “I don’t think so.” atZionsville.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 19

For the past three years, Cacioppo has chaired the committee of Komen’s Pink Tie Ball — the foundation’s second largest fundraiser. It’s become a family affair as her son ran a lemonade stand and coordinated a Pink Out day through his school’s student council that raised $9,000. “He was a Pink Tie Guy, so since he plays hockey, he was honored at one of the Indy Fuel games for his fundraising efforts,” says the proud mom. The September event was the most successful one to date, having raised more than $250,000. Cacioppo, now VP of the board, is also on the Executive Committee for Women and The Law Division as part of the Indy Bar Association as well as the steering committee for the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, Inc. “I have a lot going on, but these are all things I really enjoy,” Cacioppo says. The biggest thing is that she doesn’t dawdle. “If I procrastinated, I’d never catch up,” she says, noting that she always has her computer with her at the ice rink, working during Cooper’s practices. She also relies on her phenomenal team of colleagues, as well as her dedicated group of mom friends. “Behind every successful woman is a list of even more successful women,” Cacioppo says. “I wouldn’t be able to survive without my Zionsville moms.” Cacioppo admits that the most challenging part of her life is making everybody a priority. “Dividing attention between your job, your kids, your husband — that’s hard,” she says. “Time is hard, but I’m a mom with a career that she loves, so if I can convey those values to my kids, I feel like I’m doing something right.” atZionsville.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 23

and lunch items to choose from.

If you leave Big Dave’s Deli & Meats hungry, it’s your fault.

Loyal customers tell Plopper and Latina to keep warm on their way out and say they will be back soon.

That’s a motto Co-Owners Carol Plopper and Syd Latina strictly adhere to. Since they took over the popular business at 1225 W. Oak Street, Zionsville, they make sure no guest leaves feeling hungry.

“One of the big things we wanted to do when we took over Big Dave’s was to keep things the same as much as we could,” Plopper says. “If it isn’t broke, you don’t need to fix it. People love the food and the atmosphere, and that has remained. The guests continued to accept us. We kept everything casual and sociable.”

On a recent frigid winter morning with temperatures hovering near zero degrees, they kept their guests warm with full cups of hot coffee and a delicious array of breakfast Plopper and Latina bought the business in

August, 2016, from its original owner, Dave Chapman, who still comes in almost every day to work and see all his friends. “When we heard he was retiring, we were worried that it would close,” Plopper says. “Zionsville wouldn’t be Zionsville without Big Dave’s. It’s a big deal. We wanted to carry it on.” They are also glad that Chapman is still heavily involved. “He loves this place, and we love having him here, and so do the customers,” Plopper says. “They are his family. It’s like he really

hasn’t retired. He still loves to cut all of the deli meats and talk to everyone.” Plopper loves cooking the food, while Latina and Chapman enjoy cutting the different selections of ham, salami, turkey, roast beef, corned beef, pastrami, liverwurst and Bologna. “I always wanted to be a butcher, and I always loved this place, because it has such a friendly neighborhood environment,” Latina says. “We are popular all year round, but we were really busy during the Christmas holiday. We sold 285 tenderloins. We also sold a lot of meat and cheese trays. People also love to come in for breakfast and lunch to eat and visit with friends.” Some of the successful breakfast items include Big Dave’s Breakfast Sandwich with egg, ham, bacon and cheese and hash browns on a fresh- baked sub roll. “That’s a big hit,” Plopper says. “People really love that. Our bagels and ‘Build Your Own’ breakfast sandwiches are also popular.” Big Dave’s also has a “Farmer’s Breakfast,” with sausage, gravy and two eggs, any style, on top of hash browns, and The City Farmer, a half portion of The Farmer’s Breakfast. Guests also love The Big Boy Breakfast with two eggs, any style, with a choice of bacon, ham, sausage or Taylor pork, hash browns and two pancakes. The pancakes, eggs, bacon, omelets and muffins are also popular, but the delicious cinnamon rolls are really a hit. “They are no joke,” Plopper says. “Our guests keep coming back for more. There are a lot of people who love the cinnamon rolls, and come in to get those or their other favorites every day. All of our baking is done in house.” Lunch items include The Z-ville Melt, with ham, turkey, bacon, provolone, lettuce, tomato and Bistro sauce on a fresh-baked sub roll, The Oak Center Melt, a grilled chicken breast with bacon, Swiss cheese, ranch dressing, lettuce and tomato and The Traditional Reuben, with hot corned beef, thousand island dressing, and sauerkraut on grilled marble rye. 26 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atZionsville.com

“The Rueben is a serious favorite,” Plopper says. “People love our sandwiches because we use Boar’s Head meats, and they are all flavorful and lean.” Guests are also able to choose their own meats for their sandwiches. Other customer favorites include The Eagle Philly Cheese Steak with grilled roast beef, green peppers and onions with provolone on a fresh baked sub roll and Zach’s Patty Melt, a grilled hamburger patty with Swiss cheese, grilled onions and 1000 Island dressing on marble rye. “The steak burgers are ground fresh and the Zionsville High School kids love them,” Latina says. “They will come in after school and eat two of the Patty Melts. We get a lot of kids and staff from the school which has been great. They are very supportive, just like the rest of the Zionsville community. We have been very lucky. We are able to do what we love to do.”
