“We wanted to build something that would be enjoyable for both of us, for now and when I retire,” Kevin says.

The dearth of miniature golf options in the Westfield and Carmel area was one of several additional factors that influenced the couple’s decision to open their own facility,

according to Jessica.

“We had been thinking about opening a miniature golf course for the past three years,” she says. “With our hockey lifestyle, having the summers off kind of like your average school year, we thought the miniature golf business was a perfect fit. So it was that and figuring it would be a good business for life after hockey. That was how the idea came into play.”

The Lynches spotted land next to Grand Park that they felt would be ideal for their mini golf concept and retained New Jerseybased Harris Miniature Golf to help with the design and construction process.

“Being close to Grand Park is so great - we know a lot of kids and families are constantly coming up that way,” Jessica says.

“It’s very much an all-ages place and this area is great for that. We couldn’t be happier to be operating the business in this area.”

After breaking ground late this winter the Lynches finished construction on the 36-hole course in under three months, subsequently hosting a grand opening celebration in late July.

“It was fun to work with our contractor and build and design the Birdies golf course from scratch,” Kevin says. “We feel like it’s a perfect fit for Grand Park and the Westfield area.”

Jessica says the northside community has rallied around the concept since the July opening, and Birdies hosted more than 10,000 mini golfers in just its first four weeks of operation.

The Lynches are still working to perfect their facility — next spring they plan to open a family-friendly restaurant and rooftop bar at Birdies, which they feel will complement the course well. The restaurant will feature mainly American fare, while the upstairs bar will offer apps and shareable plates in addition to beer, wine and cocktails.

“We’re really excited to get the entire project finished, and we think the WestfieldMag.com / OCTOBER 2019 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 5

restaurant will really make the whole place feel even more complete and seem like a true destination spot for families,” Kevin says.

The Lynches both describe themselves as entrepreneurial spirits. They met during their sophomore year at the University of Michigan and were married 18 months after graduating.

“When we were trying to pick a home base, we thought that since I drag her away from her family for eight to nine months out of the year, it would be good to settle down in her hometown here in Indiana,” Kevin says.

“Especially having kids, we figured being close to her parents’ house would be good.”

At Birdies, players can opt for 18 or 36 holes, and the course is fully landscaped with waterfalls, a rock cave, a flowing creek and more. The Lynches plan to add distinct seasonal touches to the course like pumpkins in the fall and lights around Christmas time.

“The course almost looks like a garden, with a ton of fun holes to play,” Jessica says. “There are no cookie-cutter shots. It’s much more than just a summer golf place too, and we’re going to make it work most of the year. We visited a lot of courses to figure out what we liked and didn’t like, to make our own course special, and I think the result is worth it.”

To hear co-owner Mark Weghorst tell it, Slapfish restaurant on Gray Road, located inside Broccoli Bill’s grocery store, is much more than just another northside eatery it’s an extension of the kind of food culture that Weghorst’s father Bill built through the years as owner and operator of the 25-yearold grocery.

“Slapfish is very much building on Broccoli Bill’s concept of fresh, quality food,” says Weghorst, a former pro golfer who worked for his father off and on at the grocery and its satellite cafe locations around the city starting in 2013 before officially opening Slapfish in July. “The idea is that you can come in here and get a fresh, healthy meal with a lot of variety, at a friendly price point. It’s that middle-ofthe-road option for people who don’t want

fast-food seafood and don’t necessarily want fine dining.”

When Bill decided to renovate and enlarge Broccoli Bill’s four years ago after observing the growth and development occurring throughout Hamilton County, Weghorst began considering the benefits of incorporating an eatery with an all fresh, scratch-made menu as part of that expansion.

A year-long renovation process ensued, including new Slapfish kitchen space and dine-in seating, and Mark says the concept has caught on quickly with locals since his grand opening celebration on July 20 that included an appearance by Mayor John Ditslear and members of the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce as well as free lobster rolls for the first 100 guests in line.

“I knew Slapfish would be a good fit — it’s something that’s a little different, and the healthy version of fast-casual seafood isn’t really found anywhere in Indiana,” says Weghorst, who owns and operates the restaurant with his wife Lauren. “The healthier things like the salads and poké bowls really trend well here, and that’s where it meets up with Broccoli Bill’s too.

So it was a good marriage and they work well together.”

Slapfish at Broccoli Bill’s is the first location in the midwest for the Californiabased chain, and patrons can choose from a variety of starters, rolls, bowls and salads, as well as specialty items like the Epic Shrimp Burrito, packed with tomato, rice, salsa, pickled onion and shrimp, and the Clobster Grilled Cheese, which comes with a mix of lobster, crab and creamy herb sauce.

“Nothing comes in pre-made here - we do absolutely everything in-house,” Weghorst explains, adding that the Power Bowl, with brown rice, veggies, avocado and mixed seafood, has been one of his customer favorites so far in addition to the Traditional Lobster Roll. “All the sauces and ingredients are as fresh as possible.

It can be a challenge and it’s very labor intensive, but we’re finding our stride as far as knowing what to expect with volume and preparing each day. I’m sure in the coming months we’ll continue to smooth that part of it out even more.”

Kids menu items are also offered, and catering with boxed lunch, taco bar, lobster roll kit, and fish-and-chip bar options is available. Kids eat free on Sunday nights currently, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (each kid can pick one menu item),

Do-it-yourself home décor has a new hands-on workshop in Central Indiana.

On August 24, husband and wife, Jeff and Brenda Armie, welcomed guests to their grand opening of AR Workshop Carmel in Westfield, IN. Located off of Gray Road, the DIY boutique provides a creative space for people who want to take classes and learn how to make their very own home décor.

With more than 135 franchise locations across the United States, the Armie’s location is the first to open in Indiana.

Brenda, who owns a majority of the business and runs the classes, says AR Workshop is unlike other craft-making

establishments in that people can do a variety of different projects at the same time rather than doing the same project as everyone else.

After looking for a way to pair her love for crafts with a business model by searching “hashtag words” on the internet, Brenda came across AR Workshop. As her “partner in crime,” and CFO, Jeff ’s responsibility was to research the company and run the initial numbers. After realizing that this could work for her, Jeff encouraged Brenda to pursue her passion. So began the journey to opening an AR Workshop.

“I love crafting. I would do it on the side, after work, make people things,” Brenda says.

“Then, I decided that I wanted to do this fulltime. So, I started online, looking at things,

thinking ‘There has to be places that you can make things.’ I necessarily didn’t think about classes per-say, but just making things.”

Corporately owned by Maureen Anders and Adria Ruff, AR Workshop began three years ago in North Carolina as a simple Etsy shop that blossomed into a fully branded e-commerce store, formerly known as Anders Ruff. With more demand for classes that taught customers how to make their projects and designs, the pair opened up a workshop.

Eventually, customers began asking about how they could open up their own stores and so a franchise was born. Now, the Carmel and Westfield area has its very own location thanks to the Armies and Brenda’s love for crafting.

“She’s always had a bug for craft,” Jeff says.

“She’s always had this desire. Every year it’s something different. She tried with this, she tried with that. She’s always making something for somebody.”

AR Workshop is designed to give guests a truly do-it-yourself experience with the help of a guide. The hands-on classes give people the chance to create custom home décor pieces using raw wood, professional paints and canvas. Projects include wood signs, frames, canvas pillows, round signs, lazy susans, tote bags, dog beds and so much more.

Classes can be done solo or with a group for a unique and fun activity. AR Workshop also hosts private events such as birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers and team-building events.

However, if crafting isn’t your thing and you’re just looking for gifts or seasonal decorations to put in your home, AR Workshop does sell generic pieces.

Friends and family helped throughout the building process, made signage, ran social media campaigns and helped prepare the new space for its grand opening. Without their support, Brenda doesn’t know if AR would have been possible.

“We’ve been blessed with a lot of good family and friends,” Jeff adds.

Booking a class is simple and done completely online. Choose the project,

check the calendar for the available day that your project is being done, choose a graphic design, register and then pay. When you show up for class, all of the materials are ready to go. If you want to tweak a design or make a complete custom piece, you can add this as an option during your online registration.

And leaving a class unhappy is not an option.

“My philosophy is: ‘To have fun and to never walk away with a project that you’re not happy with,’” Brenda says. “Basically, at the beginning of every class, that’s what I tell everyone. You’re here to have fun, and you want to walk away with something that you are happy with.”

ids of all ages who need a boost with grasping mathematical concepts or who might need an extra challenge they’re not finding in their math classroom can get the extra guidance they might need at Carmel’s Mathnasium learning center.

Brett Baltz, a Noblesville High School grad, opened the Mathnasium Carmel location in January of 2015 and has seen improvement in kids of all ages since that time. Two years prior, while teaching high school math at Carmel High School after a long stint at Lawrence North High School, Baltz was introduced to the Mathnasium concept by a friend and saw the potential in opening a franchise location on the northside of Indy.

“I had been teaching for eight or nine years, and after I heard about Mathnasium I started looking into it and things came together over the course of the next year,” recalls Baltz, the Carmel franchise owner and director. “When I had a chance to dig into it while I was at Carmel High School, I felt like it would be a great next phase for me. So many kids need a little guidance away from the stress of the classroom to understand basic concepts in a way that makes sense to them.”

Baltz says his facility is a far cry from being simply a tutoring center that helps with kids’ homework. Initially, each kid undergoes a thorough assessment process to determine the precise areas that need attention.

“In the classroom, kids tend to go without, if they can’t develop the concepts for themselves,” he says. “The assessments we do help to create a learning plan in the beginning that meets them exactly where they’re at. If parents know their kid is behind, rather than have the kid keep trudging through, say, fifth grade when it’s really the third-grade stuff that’s messing them up, we meet them where they need to be.”

Each of the Carmel Mathnasium’s 21 specially trained instructors helps students develop number sense and conceptual understanding, rather than memorization

of individual steps to solve mathematical problems. Teachers rotate to help with each student’s individualized learning plan, asking and answering questions and reviewing concepts as needed.

“It’s a socratic-type method that we use, which helps kids understand and articulate how they solve their problems, in a way that makes sense to the instructors,” Baltz says. “Then the kids can internalize those concepts instead of stressing out with memorization of steps. And then when they’re on the right track we back off and let them work, which is just as important.”

Founded in 2002, the first Mathnasium location opened in Los Angeles, and there are currently more than 1,000 centers in the U.S. including seven in Indiana. Kids from grades 1 through 12 are welcome, and the Mathnasium approach covers algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, as well as SAT and ACT preparation.

It’s not just for kids who need an extra boost in math concepts either - Mathnasium also offers opportunities for kids who might benefit from an extra challenge they might not be getting from their grade-level math content at school.

“It’s about conceptual understanding and how numbers are related to each other,” Baltz adds. “The sign at the front asks if you know what 99+99+99 is, and kids want to stack it up and then add the 9s and carry the 2, and all the unnecessary steps. Then when we ask them what number 99 is close to, it

clicks. And often you don’t have to go any further, and they’re off and running. It’s all about those concepts, and it takes the fear away from what they’re doing in school.”

Your CBD Store owner Lois Fisher cannot remember the last time she had to take a pill for pain relief, and it’s her hope that everyone will soon understand her reason why - CBD. Changes in the 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Schedule I Narcotics List which made the sale of hemp by-product CBD (cannabidiol) legal. CBD stores could officially open this year, so Fisher and her sisters jumped at their chance to bring the product to market because of the life-changing results they had seen after using CBD themselves.

Fisher, who recently opened a store in Westfield, and her sisters all had backgrounds in the medical profession.

They also had the aches, pains and, in Fisher’s case, the arthritis that can sometimes come from the rigorous demands of her former nursing career.

“Nothing I was prescribed pharmaceutically had ever helped,” Fisher says. “But I started using CBD a year and

a half ago, and I was blown away by the results. I thought to myself, ‘I have to get this into the hands of people.’”

Her store opened at 17435 Carey Road, Suite A, in April, just shortly after her sisters, Della Hutton and Rebekah Grandi, opened a store in Carmel at 255 E. Carmel Drive in March. Another sister, Margo Battenberg, opened a store in Alabama in June.

And all of the Your CBD Stores have one primary mission — to educate.

“Education about CBD is key in our stores,” Fisher says. “We chose to partner with Your CBD Store because it is a high quality, boutique-like store that aims to remove the stigma that has been associated with CBD — that stigma of a smoky, seedy-type vape shop. Our brand does not allow anything like that.”

Fisher does not make any medical claims about CBD and is quick to point out the store’s disclaimer that says CBD has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration nor are the products “intended for the cure, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease in man or animal.”

“The FDA is working on guidelines, and I am glad,” she adds.

Until then, CBD sales are a buyer-beware arena.

“If you order online, really do your research and always go with a reputable resource,” Fisher advises.

How can you tell whether your CBD products come from a reputable retailer? One way is whether your product contains a certificate of analysis, which Fisher says is the law in Indiana.

A COA is a testing procedure that is done by an independent, third-party lab that tests to see what is in the CBD oil. If there is a COA, there is a QR code on the bottle that you can scan that will show you the ingredients the lab found.

Those ingredients should match the claims made on the bottle.

“If there’s no COA, there’s no way to know what’s in the bottle,” Fisher says. “The COA is the hallmark of a good company.”

Fisher adds that the CBD her company sells is third-party quality tested three times — while it is growing, when it is harvested and in its finished form.

There are many opinions about the effectiveness of CBD, but Fisher says she believes one of its greatest strengths is as an anti-inflammatory.

She says customers have also reported positive results using her products, which come in oils taken under the tongue, topical pain creams, gummy bears, skin products and pet products, to treat anxiety and sleep disorders.

“And the best part is, you don’t have to make radical lifestyle changes to see positive results,” she says.

In her constant push to reach as many people with her message as possible, Fisher adds, “We are always looking for more entrepreneurs to open more Indiana stores.”

The Your CBD Store franchise started in Florida less than a year ago and already has almost 400 stores selling the Colorado-grown hemp.

“I feel extremely humbled and honored to win,” Eggleston says. “My high school journey has been far from easy. During Student Impact, 536 North Union Street, my freshman year, I was diagnosed with Zionsville, is a safe place where students Crohn’s Disease, and missed a lot of school from grades 5-12 can build relationships because of it. I get sick easily and miss more that bring hope and healing. It was started in school than most people. It has taken a 1999 to be an environment where kids can lot of hard work and dedication to school

“Ever since I can remember, my favorite thing has always been animals, particularly of the mammal species, but still animals in general,” Eggleston says. “My dream job has always been something to do with animals, whether that was a veterinarian or a zoo keeper, I did not really know, but I knew it had to be with animals.

Riley Parshall, a recent Westfield High School graduate, says she thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the school’s speech and debate team.

“Mrs. McKinney has helped me through some of the hardest times in my life,” she adds. “To this day, I try and see her at least once a week just to say hello or have a conversation. It is not only Mrs. McKinney at Westfield, but there are so many teachers like her. I know so many students that have a relationship similar to mine with a teacher and those relationships will stick with the students for the rest of their lives.”

Eggleston says Student Impact of Westfield has also helped her tremendously.

“I attend Student Impact every Monday and Friday and volunteer as an intern/ student leader every Tuesday and Thursday,” Eggleston says. “I love everything about this organization. I love the people who run it and attend it, what they stand for, what they do for Westfield, and everything in between.

Eggleston has a favorite teacher.

“I spend a good amount of my time serving for my church and our community,” she says. “I serve weekly in the children’s ministry at Northview Church and at the Grace Care Center food pantry. I also serve in areas that I am exceptionally passionate about, such as encouraging girls in STEM.”

Additionally, Parshall goes to the Hamilton County 4-H electrical workshop annually. There, she teachers elementary age participants how to solder. For three years during her high school career, she ran an electronics station at Westfield’s Girls Rock STEAM program.

When she was at Westfield High School, she was involved in a lot of school activities. They helped her learn how to develop a lot of different skills.

“I was involved with Westfield’s girl’s tennis team, speech and debate, steel pan, and Dance Marathon. I was also an attorney for the mock trial team and a speaker for American Pie.” 20 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / WestfieldMag.com

part of Student Impact since the fifth grade and will be a member until the moment she graduates high school.

“I started volunteering at student impact my sophomore year, but it wasn’t until my junior year that I was volunteering on a constant basis. As of right now, I volunteer nine or more hours a week, and love every minute.”

Eggleston also says she loves living in Westfield.

“I have always felt safe and secure while being in Westfield,” she says. “I love the amenities and opportunities available. I love that Westfield has fun things to do with friends, and also fun things to do with family.” She believes Student Impact is a big part of that.

Danyele Easterhaus, executive director of Student Impact of Westfield, says says she is thrilled Eggleston has been recognized.

“Shea is just an amazing young woman,” Easterhaus says. “She leads with a quiet, yet strong sense about her, despite all the issues she faces each and every day. She puts others first and displays leadership not in

Parshall is now a freshman at Purdue University, where she is in the First Year Engineering program.

“I also plan to double major in Spanish,” Parshall says.

Inspiring Mentors When Parshall was at Westfield High School, she had a lot of teachers who inspired her.

Parshall noted that she enjoys the city of Westfield.

“First, Mr. Gregory Robinson was an incredible mentor, teacher, and coach to me,” Parshall says. “He has taught me to never stop my pursuit of knowledge and that I am fully capable of achieving my goals. I was extremely lucky to have him as a role model during my high school career.

“Next, Mrs. Hasler-Troutman was an unforgettable teacher. She shows her students immense love and care. If I had a difficult

day or week, Hache somehow had life advice for the class that made me feel better. She showed every student unconditional motherly love. I aspire to be even more positive and warm, like she is every day.”

“I liked the people the best,” she says. “I made connections with numerous teachers, and I made lifelong friends. I loved the crowd in the student section at football games, and the people I met in clubs and classes.”

Parshall is looking forward to the future.

“I am very excited to carry on what I learned during my time at Westfield at Purdue,” she says. “I plan to get involved in Greek life, clubs such as Model UN, and study hard for Purdue Engineering.”
